Community-Based Health Education Led by Women's Groups Significantly Improved Maternal Health Service Utilization in Southern Ethiopia: A Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of health education intervention (HEI) on maternal health service utilization (MHSU) in southern Ethiopia. From 10 January to 1 August 2023, a community-based, two-arm, parallel-group cluster randomized controlled trial (cRCT) was conducted among pregnant mothers in the Northern Zone of Sidama National Regional State, Ethiopia. We utilized multilevel mixed-effects modified Poisson regression with robust variance to control for the effects of clustering and potential confounders. The level of significance was adjusted for multiple comparisons. The overall utilization of at least one antenatal care (ANC) visit was 90.2% in the treatment group and 59.5% in the comparator group (χ2 = 89.22, p < 0.001). Health facility delivery (HFD) utilization was considerably different between the treatment group (74.3%) and the comparator group (50.8%) (χ2 = 70.50, p < 0.001). HEI significantly increased ANC utilization (adjusted risk ratio [ARR]: 1.32; 99% CI: 1.12-1.56) and HFD utilization (ARR: 1.24; 99% CI: 1.06-1.46). The utilization of at least one postnatal care (PNC) service was 65.4% in the treatment group and 52.1% in the comparator group (χ2 = 19.51, p = 0.01). However, after controlling for the effects of confounders and clustering, the impact of HEI on PNC utilization was insignificant between the two groups (ARR: 1.15; 99% CI: 0.89-1.48). A community-based HEI significantly increased ANC and HFD utilization but did not increase PNC utilization. Expanding the HEI with certain modifications will have a superior effect on improving MHSU. Effectiveness of Health Education Intervention on Knowledge Regarding Prevention of Cervical Cancer among Women in a Selected Community of Kathmandu, Nepal

Cervical cancer is considered a cancer that is preventable by means of vaccination against human papilloma virus (HPV) and early detection by screening. Its incidence is decreasing in developed countries but not in developing countries, including Nepal. Disease ignorance and low awareness about available preventive health services are the main causes for cervical cancer still being a leading cause of death by cancer. We evaluated the effectiveness of a health educational intervention in improving women’s knowledge about cervical cancer and its prevention in a semi-urban community of Kathmandu. Health education was provided in an interactive lecture for women of reproductive age in various wards of Shankarapur Municipality, Kathmandu. Its effectiveness was assessed by comparing the level of knowledge before and four weeks after the intervention, by interviewing participants based on a questionnaire consisting of 48 questions. The study was completed in 126 women (mean age 33.5 years). The mean pre-test and post-test correct scores were 10.2 and 42.13 respectively (p &lt;0.001). Initially, 96.8% had poor knowledge (score &lt;60.0% of total); post-intervention, 87.3% had good knowledge (score ≥80.0%, p &lt;0.001). Knowledge before intervention was especially poor among older age, less educated, housewives or doing small business, and married women (p &lt;0.001). Knowledge of cervical cancer and its prevention is poor among community women. A health education is very effective in improving women’s knowledge and should be implemented as a policy to achieve the goal of eliminating cervical cancer as a public health issue.

Introduction: The incidence of obesity is continually increasing worldwide, including in both developed and developing countries. This condition can jeopardize health and increase the risk of disabilities in adults. Health education is defined as an effort to provide or improve the understanding, attitude, and actions taken by society in maintaining and improving their health. The purpose of this writing is to evaluate the effectiveness of health education interventions in reducing body mass index (BMI) in school-age children. Method: The implementation method of the intervention is in the form of providing health education to school-age children. In providing health education about obesity in children by eating a diet and consuming healthy foods. Results: The results of the two-week implementation showed that treated patients experienced a decrease in BMI of 0.60 SD, while discharged patients experienced a decrease in BMI of 0.59. It can be concluded that providing health education intervention to school-age children who are obese is an effective measure to reduce their body mass index Conclusion: Therefore, as part of the management of obesity and overweight in school-age children, community nurses are expected to be able to implement health education.

Effects of Health Education on Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Adverse Drug Reaction Reporting among Community Pharmacists in Anambra State, Nigeria

Background: Poor reportage of adverse drug reaction has been linked o. increase in morbidity, mortality and economic burden of diseases and health related conditions.&#x0D; Objective: To determine the effects of health education on knowledge, attitude and practice of adverse drug reaction (ADR) reporting among community pharmacists practicing in Anambra State.&#x0D; Methods: This interventional study was conducted among Community Pharmacists in Anambra State. Simple random samp\ling technique was used. Pre-tested, semi-structured self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data on respondents’ socio-demographics, knowledge of, attitude to and practice of ADR reporting Associations between variables were tested using Chi-square and Binary logistic regression at 5% level of significance. Data obtained were analyzed using SPSS version 23.&#x0D; Results: The mean age of the respondents was 46.5±11.2 years. Post intervention result shows that there was an increase in knowledge of ADR reporting in the intervention group from 52% to 95.3%. There was a decrease in knowledge of ADRs reporting in the control group from 47.3% to44.7%. There was a statistically significant difference between the experimental group and the control group on their attitude towards ADR reporting (p&lt;0.05). Only 26.7% of the test group had filled a spontaneous reporting ADR form prior to this study compared to 18% from the control group and is associated with the effect of health education intervention.&#x0D; Conclusions: There was underreporting of ADRs, associated with gaps in the knowledge, attitude and practice among the community pharmacists studied. There is need for focused continuous health education interventions on ADR reporting among them.

Two Arm Single-blind Parallel Randomized Controlled Trial Effects of Health Education Intervention on Foot Self-care Behavior Among Diabetic Patients: Study Protocol

Introduction: Diabetes is a chronic illness and it has a significant impact on health. Behavioral interventions theory could improve self-care practices of the foot among patients with diabetic. Behavioral interventions could prevent the risk of foot problems. This trial aims at determining the effect of patient education intervention on foot self-care behavior and clinical outcomes among diabetes patients. Methods: The study is a two-arm single-blinded randomized controlled trial which will be conducted in the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owerri, Imo state, Nigeria involving 160 diabetic patients. A central computer-generated randomization list will be generated. Sequentially numbered sealed opaque envelopes will be used to determine concealment. The sample size is 160; therefore 80 participants will receive three sessions of patient education in addition to usual care (intervention group) for three and six months while another 80 participants (control group) will receive only usual care and will receive health education after the study is completed. The outcome of the intervention effectiveness is measured by modified version of Diabetes foot Self-Care Behavior Scale (DFSBS). Discussion: Our hypothesis is that based on the Health Belief Model, patient education intervention can improve foot self-care behavior in the intervention group. Data collection will be done at baseline, and at three- and six-months post intervention. Trial Registration: The Clinical Trials Registry- India (CTRI), Reference no CTRI/2021/06/034311.

Impact of the educational program "Igiene Insieme"in 1,991 Italian primary schools: student behavior andincidence of SARS-CoV-2.

To evaluate the impact of the health educational program "Igiene Insieme 2021/2022" on Italian primary school children's knowledge, attitudes and practice of hygiene and sanitation and to compare incidence of SARS-CoV-2 in schools participating the project with regional data of Lombardy and Apulia. Participating schools were provided with a hygiene kit containing educational material for teachers and sanitizing products for students. We conducted a pre-post evaluation administering a questionnaire before and after the intervention. In addition, we compared SARS-CoV-2 incidence of the participating primary schools (225 in Lombardy and 120 in Apulia) to regional-level data. We tested thedifferences between groups by using the Chi-squared test. Of 1,991 schools, 472 responded to both questionnaires for a total of 16,988 students. 17.3% of the students learned the importance of handwashing in preventing infections, 22.6% when to wash hands, 18.5% the existence of alternative solutions in absence of soap and water, 23.2% how to correctly wash hands. A lower incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infections was recorded in primary schools participating in the project as compared to the average regional incidence in Lombardy (9.6% vs.14.8%) and Apulia (10.7% vs.12.0%) for the same age group. We report an overall positive effect of health education interventions in primary schools. Although the limitations in the study design, our findings are important to inform planning, implementation and monitoring of health promotion campaigns in young generations so as to contribute to limit the risk of infection spread at the community level.

5610785 THE EFFICACY OF HEALTH EDUCATION INTERVENTION AND MATERNAL SCREENING ON KNOWLEDGE AND INFANT SCREENING FOR SICKLE CELL DISEASE AMONG PREGNANT WOMEN ATTENDING ANTENATAL CLINICS IN DAR-ES-SALAAM, TANZANIA

Background: Globally, Sickle cell disease (SCD) is one of the most common genetic disease with high childhood mortality 1. Early identification of babies with SCD through newborn screening (NBS) and linking them to care are among the recommended interventions 2. For these to be effective, it is important for pregnant women to have the right knowledge on SCD and motivation to screen their babies. Aim: To assess the efficacy of health education (HE) intervention and maternal screening for SCD on knowledge and the uptake of infant screening for SCD among pregnant women attending antenatal clinics (ANC) in Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study, involved pregnant women attending ANC at Buguruni health center, Mbagala hospital and Sinza hospital in Dar Es Salaam between August 2020 to April 2022. A structured questionnaire was used in data collection. Knowledge on SCD (poor if score <7; good if score 7-10) was assessed to all participants before and after two sessions of HE3, and participants in Buruguni and Mbagala were also screened for SCD using Sickle SCAN point-of-care test (BioMedomics Inc, USA). We computed effectiveness of HE intervention as the post-intervention minus baseline knowledge score. Two-sample test of proportions, univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to analyze the efficacy of HE intervention and also predictors of infant diagnosis. Before enrollment, written informed consent was obtained from participants, parents/guardian of participants <18 years of age. Results: A total of 467 pregnant women completed two sessions of HE intervention where 221 (47.3 %) participants were screened for SCD; Out of 221 screened participants, 203 (91.9%) remembered their sickle cell status 3 to 4 months after screening. The proportion of participants with good knowledge on SCD had significantly increased from 12.4% at baseline to 85.9% following the education intervention p-value <0.0001. HE provided was effective to 85.3% of participants, and was 2.45 times higher among those who shared the received education with others than those who did not share (AOR = 2.45; 95% CI = 1.38 to 4.36). The uptake of infant diagnosis was 5.39 higher in infants whose mothers shared the received education than those who did not share (AOR = 5.39; 95% CI = 1.18 to 24.67). 5.4% of babies (26/170 babies) were screened post-delivery, and 3 of them had Hb SS. Mothers who were employed had 6.49 higher odds of screening their infants than housewives (AOR = 6.49; 95% CI =1.52 to 27.79). Maternal status was also seen to associate with infant diagnosis whereby those with hemoglobin S (AS or SS) had 13.28 times higher odds of screening their infants than those who did not know their SCD status (AOR = 13.28; 95% CI = 4.11 to 42.86). There was no difference in odds of the baby being screened for SCD between mothers who had Hemoglobin AA as compared to mothers who were not screened for SCD (AOR = 1.62; 95% CI = 0.56 to 4.84). Conclusion: This study has demonstrated that maternal HE and maternal screening for SCD are feasible and effective interventions in increasing knowledge as well as improving the uptake of infant screening for SCD. These interventions are strongly recommended to be included in the comprehensive care package for pregnant women attending antenatal clinics, particularly in areas with a high burden of SCD.

Effectiveness of health education intervention on prevention of myocardial infarction among patients with type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemia at Vietnam National hospital of Endocrinology

Objectives: To describe current status of knowledge and practice of myocaridal infarction (MI) prevention and toevaluate effectiveness of health education intervention on MI prevention among - patients with type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemia treated at the Vietnam National Hospital of Endocrinology in 2022. Participants and methods: An interventional study was conducted on 62 inpatients with type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemia treated at the Department of Cardiology and Metabolic Disorders of Vietnam National Hospital of Endocrinology from June to August 2022. The intervention was guided by the MOH guidelines with the sessions on knowledge and practice of myocardial infarction and infarction prevention. The knowledge and practice questionnaire were used to measure outcomes at three-point times, namely, baseline, post-intervention, and follow-up. Results: The average score of knowledge about myocardial infarction prevention of the participants was 35.61 ± 9.33 out of 57 points. In which, 17.74% had poor knowledge. The participants with poor practice accounted for 6.45%. There was a change in the mean score of knowledge and practice about myocardial infarction prevention after health education intervention with p &lt; 0,001, however, the results rarely remained overtime with p &gt; 0,05. Conclusion: Health education intervention was demonstrated to improve the participants’ knowledge and practice of MI prevention. In nursing care practice, health education related to knowledge and practice of MI prevention for patients with type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemia should be maintained and strengthened.

Effect of Health Education Intervention On Diarrhea Prevention Practices Among Mothers of Under-5 Children in Abia State, Nigeria

Delayed response to the onset of diarrhea in infants caused by poor sanitation and delay in responding to signs and symptoms can be fatal, as evidenced by mortality in children attributable to diarrhea, occasioned by inadequate understanding of the dangers and consequences involved due to poor knowledge of far-reaching consequences, inadequate prevention and skills to manage the condition as it develops. This study evaluated the effect of a health education intervention on diarrhea prevention practices among mothers with children under the age of five in Aba, Abia State, Nigeria. This study employed a quasi-experimental research design. From population of 350 under-5 mothers in the Local government, a sample size of 60 was determined using power formula. Systematic sampling was used to select the mothers. The health education intervention involved a control and experimental group. The duration of program was one hour weekly didactic intervention for six weeks. A structured validated questionnaire was used to collect data at baseline, at 6th and 12th week post intervention. The Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficients for the constructs ranged from 0.75 to 0.87. The mother’s prevention practices were measured on a 27-point rating scale. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics at α = 0.05 level of significance.Findings showed that between the baseline and the post-immediate there was a significant difference in the mean prevention score in the experimental group (from 19.03±5.91 to 22.20±3.67 at p&lt; 0.05. However, there was no significant difference (p &gt;0.05) in the mean prevention score of the control group (from20.13 ± 4.89 to 20.8 ± 3.41). In conclusion, the health education intervention was effective increasing the mother’s prevention and home management practices of diarrhea. It is recommended that matrons and nurses in charge of antenatal and postnatal clinics should teach mothers about prevention andhome management of diarrhea.

BackgroundDiabetes Mellitus (DM) is considered as one of the major public health problems globally. Health education strategies can help in managing blood glucose level and complications among DM patients. Health education intervention is effective to manage and control the blood glucose levels among diabetic patients. This study explored the effectiveness of health education intervention on DM among school teachers in public sector schools of Pakistan.MethodsThis was quasi-experimental study where baseline & end line assessments were conducted on teachers of public sector schools of Sindh province, Pakistan, from October to December 2019. Pretested structured questionnaire was used in this study. Participants (n = 136). were randomly selected from the list of government schools registered with district education department An intervention comprised of health education sessions with DM patients was undertaken after conducting baseline assessment followed by end line assessment. The institutional review board of Health Services Academy Pakistan ethically approved this study.ResultsAll the respondents completed post-test with mean ± SD age of participants being 39.2 ± 1.34 years. Female teachers comprised 65% out of which 70% were living in rural areas. Knowledge on DM pre-test score was 20.03 ± 3.31 that increased in post-test to 49.11 ± 2.21 (p < 0.05). Mean score of information on symptoms and causes of DM was 1.98 ± 0.21 for pre-test whereas for post-test it was 4.78 ± 0.12 (p < 0.05). The effect of intervention was significant on diabetes related complications (p < 0.05), symptoms (p < 0.05), overall score (p < 0.05) and preventive practices (p < 0.05).ConclusionsThe study provides evidence of the importance and effectiveness of health education intervention related to diabetes among school teachers, which has a positive impact on the knowledge and practices. We concluded that the health education session sensitized the teachers and they can bring cogent changes to enhance their knowledge about diabetes and its risks.

THE IMPACT OF HEALTH EDUCATION ON KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE, PRACTICE, AND PREVENTION OF IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA AMONG ADOLESCENT FEMALES: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Introduction: Women in reproductive age are at high risk of iron deficiency anemia during the menstrual cycle. Adequate knowledge, attitudes, practices, and prevention towards anemia are necessary. There is a dearth of information on the evaluation of study characteristics and the overall quality of evidence of intervention studies in improving knowledge, attitudes and practices of anemia among adolescents. Aim: The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of health education interventions on the knowledge, attitudes, practices, and prevention towards anemia in adolescent girls. Therefore, the review question are “What health education methods are best used to improve knowledge, attitudes, practices, and prevention of adolescent?”, “What is the effect of health education interventions on anemia in adolescent girls?” Methods: This systematic review was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols) Checklist whichinvolved studies published between 2000 to 2021 through the databases of PubMed, ScienceDirect, Willey online Library, Cochrane, in English version. Study quality assessed using the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on controlled intervention studies. The risk of bias of the studies included assessed using The Cochrane Risk of Bias Assessment Tool.Data of the studies included were synthesized thematically in order to understand the effectiveness of mobile application. At identification stage, there are 1,414 publications were discovered through backward searching of relevant papers. The full-text screening was conducted on 34 articles and the finding 22 articles failed to meet eligibility criteria at the full-text screening stage, and only 12 articles were finally eligible for further analysis. There are twelve studies included in this study, strengthening the components of health education and increasing Iron-Folic Acid (IFA) knowledge among adolescent girls is beneficial in reducing iron deficiency anemia in adolescent girls Results: The results of the review article showed that health education interventions, giving iron supplements and multivitamins were effective in overcoming iron deficiency anemia in adolescent girls. Educational interventions also increase the knowledge of young women about iron deficiency anemia Conclusions: Health Education intervention for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia among adolescent female improved their knowledge, attitude, practice,and prevention.

Effect of Health Education Intervention on Practice of Breast Self–Examination Among Women of Reproductive Age in Selected Primary Healthcare Facilities in Ogun State, Nigeria

The study examined effect of health education intervention on practice of breast self–examination among women of reproductive age in selected primary healthcare facilities in Ogun State, Nigeria. The study specifically examined the pre- and post- intervention knowledge and practice of breast self-examination among women of reproductive age in selected primary healthcare facilities. This study adopted one group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental research design. The population for the study comprises of women of reproductive age in two selected primary healthcare facilities in Ogun State. The researcher adapted a well-structured test paper that was used to obtain information from respondents. The instrument was validated by experts consisting of nursing professionals as well as experienced professional researchers who ascertained face and content validity. The research was carried out in three phases namely pre-intervention, intervention and post-intervention. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts and percentages were used to answer the research question while inferential statistics of t-test was used to test the hypotheses. The findings of this study show that majority of the respondents at the pre-intervention phase had average knowledge of breast self-examination while the knowledge level was high after intervention. The findings of this study however show that majority of the respondents at the pre-intervention phase had never practice breast self-examination while the practice level was high after intervention. The study concluded that the health education intervention program improved the practice of breast self-examination among women of reproductive age. It was recommended among others that health educational intervention regarding practice of breast self-examination should be done periodically by health workers during clinics for women of reproductive age.

Effect of Health Education Interventions on Knowledge Of Malaria Prevention Among Pregnant Women In Selected Hospitals In Oyo State, Nigeria

The study examined the effect of health education interventions on knowledge of malaria prevention among pregnant women in selected hospitals in Oyo State, Nigeria. The research design adopted for this study was the quasi-experimental design. The population of this study was pregnant women who were attending antenatal clinics in the selected health care facilities in Oyo State, Nigeria. The sample size formula was used to derive 80 respondents. A multi stage sampling procedure was used to select the respondents for the study. The instrument used for the pre and post-intervention was a structured questionnaire. The face and content validity of the instrument was ensured by experts in Public Health. The collection of data was done in three phases: the baseline or pre-intervention phase which was for one week; the immediate post-intervention was for eight weeks (intervention was between the 3rd to 10th week), and the third phase which was the outcome evaluation at the 12th week follow up. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data computation. The result revealed that respondents’ knowledge on malaria prevention among pregnant women attending antenatal clinics in selected hospitals was low at the pre-intervention stage for both the experimental group and the control group. However, the knowledge increased significantly at the immediate post intervention and at the 12th week follow-up for the experimental group while the control group remained the same. It was recommended among others that nurses should regularly organise health education on malaria prevention for pregnant women attending antenatal clinics.
