Automatic area estimation of algal blooms in water bodies from UAV images using texture analysis

Algal blooms, the spread of algae on the surface of water bodies, have adverse effects not only on aquatic ecosystems but also on human life. The adverse effects of harmful algal blooms (HABs) necessitate a convenient solution for detection and monitoring. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have recently emerged as a tool for algal bloom detection, efficiently providing on-demand images at high spatiotemporal resolutions. This study developed an image processing method for algal bloom area estimation from the aerial images (obtained from the internet) captured using UAVs. As a remote sensing method of HAB detection, analysis, and monitoring, a combination of histogram and texture analyses was used to efficiently estimate the area of HABs. Statistical features like entropy (using the Kullback–Leibler method) were emphasized with the aid of a gray-level co-occurrence matrix. The results showed that the orthogonal images demonstrated fewer errors, and the morphological filter best detected algal blooms in real time, with a precision of 80%. This study provided efficient image processing approaches using on-board UAVs for HAB monitoring.

Suppress that algae: Mitigating the effects of harmful algal blooms through preemptive detection & suppression

Recently, Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs), e.g., toxic red tide and blue-green algae, have suffocated and plagued coastlines and inland water bodies leading to economic losses. Currently, batch data collection in many areas is inadequate and reactionary following regional fish kills. Therefore, there is an inherent need for a “smart” solution aimed at preemptive detection and mitigation of the impending super bloom through combination of concurrent measurements, modeling, and mitigation using suppression agents. Our hypothesis is if a Seek and Destroy Algal Mitigation System (SDAMS) is engineered with a multitude of capabilities, including remote algal parameter sensing, wireless data transmission, and mitigation using suppression agents, then it will preemptively detect and mitigate HABs. The SDAMS includes (i) a floatation device with a Wi-Fi microcontroller and five sensors for concurrent measurements, (ii) real-time data transmission to the cloud, (iii) data visualization; diagnostic and predictive analysis, and (iv) an algae suppression component. During laboratory testing, physical and chemical agents used for mitigation noticeably suppressed the algae in various ways. Algal suppression occurred by either reducing pH, increasing Dissolved Oxygen (DO), or exerting high mechanical properties. We conducted predictive analytics to quantify the influence of the suppression agent on algae and compared the green spectrum strength (indicating algal intensity) to the DO concentration. Using machine learning, a 4th order polynomial equation with 94% accuracy provided the best curve-fit to explain the green spectrum-to-DO relationship. This cost-effective solution can be applied to instantaneously suppress, or preemptively mitigate, HABs to minimize environmental impacts.

Can functional units of periphytic protozoan communities be used to evaluate the effects of harmful algal blooms on ecological quality in marine ecosystems?

Based on biological traits, the ecological quality status under the pressure of two harmful algal bloom (HAB) species was evaluated using functional units (FUs) of periphytic protozoan communities. Five treatments with different concentrations of Alexandrium tamarense and Gymnodinium catenatum, i.e., 100, 102, 103, 104, and 105 cells ml-1, were used. A total of 20 FUs were identified from 25 test protozoan species. Among these FUs, vagile algivores with large sizes showed a decreasing trend (i.e., in diversity and abundance) with increasing concentrations of algae, while vagile bacterivores and non-selectives with small sizes dominated at concentrations of 104 cells ml-1 of both algal species. Ellipse tests on pair-wise functional distinctness indices revealed a significant departure of test protozoan communities from an expected functional distinctness breadth when algal concentrations exceeded 104 cells ml-1. Based on these findings, it was concluded that FUs of periphytic protozoa may be a useful tool for evaluating the effects of HABs on ecological quality status in marine ecosystems.

Variations in the toxicity and condition index of five bivalve species throughout a red tide event caused by Alexandrium catenella: A field study

Harmful red tides in China have caused paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) pollution and led to severe socioeconomic effects in shellfish aquaculture. Although shellfish can survive harmful algal blooms, the effects on their Condition Index (CI) have been underestimated. This study sought to evaluate the effects of the profiles and levels of paralytic shellfish toxins on variations in the CI in bivalves under natural blooming conditions. We observed clear soft tissue lesions to varying degrees except in Mytilus galloprovincialis after toxin exposure. Among the five species of shellfish exposed in situ, only M. galloprovincialis accumulated PSTs content above the maximum permitted level (800 μg STX di-HCl eq./kg). The highest toxin content in all sample tissues was observed in Patinopecten yessoensis. Significant interspecies differences in PSTs accumulation among the five bivalve species were observed in the hepatopancreas. A total of nine PSTs components and four new C-11 hydroxyl metabolites (so-called M-toxins) toxins were detected, and detoxification diversity was observed among bivalves. We observed a higher proportion of M-toxin in early stages, and the proportions changed only slightly over time in M. galloprovincialis and Magallana gigas, thus accounting for the significantly higher metabolism rate. Notably, the CI in M. gigas and Argopecten irradians was positively correlated with lowest toxin accumulation of PSTs content, but significantly inhibited. In conclusion, our results revealed a significant inhibitory effect on the CI in shellfish, in a species specific manner, with distinct levels of inhibition correlated with different toxin metabolites. Our study revealed the toxin content of different bivalves exposed to a natural red tide environment and the consequent effects on growth, thus building a foundation for research on the mechanisms underlying the effects of PSTs on growth. These data establish the ecological and economic significance of the effects of harmful algal blooms on bivalves.

Effects of Harmful Algal Blooms on Fish and Shellfish Species: A Case Study of New Zealand in a Changing Environment.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have wide-ranging environmental impacts, including on aquatic species of social and commercial importance. In New Zealand (NZ), strategic growth of the aquaculture industry could be adversely affected by the occurrence of HABs. This review examines HAB species which are known to bloom both globally and in NZ and their effects on commercially important shellfish and fish species. Blooms of Karenia spp. have frequently been associated with mortalities of both fish and shellfish in NZ and the sub-lethal effects of other genera, notably Alexandrium spp., on shellfish (which includes paralysis, a lack of byssus production, and reduced growth) are also of concern. Climate change and anthropogenic impacts may alter HAB population structure and dynamics, as well as the physiological responses of fish and shellfish, potentially further compromising aquatic species. Those HAB species which have been detected in NZ and have the potential to bloom and harm marine life in the future are also discussed. The use of environmental DNA (eDNA) and relevant bioassays are practical tools which enable early detection of novel, problem HAB species and rapid toxin/HAB screening, and new data from HAB monitoring of aquaculture production sites using eDNA are presented. As aquaculture grows to supply a sizable proportion of the world’s protein, the effects of HABs in reducing productivity is of increasing significance. Research into the multiple stressor effects of climate change and HABs on cultured species and using local, recent, HAB strains is needed to accurately assess effects and inform stock management strategies.

Stable isotope analysis reveals differences in domoic acid accumulation and feeding strategies of key vectors in a California hotspot for outbreaks

Given the effects of harmful algal blooms (HABs) on human and wildlife health, understanding how domoic acid (DA) is accumulated and transferred through food webs is critical for recognizing the most affected marine communities and predicting ecosystem effects. This study combines stable isotopes of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) from bulk muscle tissue with DA measurements from viscera to identify the foraging strategies of important DA vectors and predators in Monterey Bay, CA. Tissue samples were collected from 27 species across three habitats in the summer of 2018 and 2019 (time periods without prominent HABs). Our results highlight an inshore-offshore variation in krill δ13C values and DA concentrations ([DA]; ppm) in anchovies indicating differences in coastal productivity and DA accumulation. The narrow overlapping isotopic niches between anchovies and sardines suggest similar diets and trophic positions, but striking differences in [DA] indicate a degree of specialization, thus, resource partitioning. In contrast, krill, market squid, and juvenile rockfish accumulated minimal DA and had comparatively broad isotopic niches, suggesting a lower capacity to serve as vectors because of potential differences in diet or feeding in isotopically distinct locations. Low [DA] in the liver of stranded sea lions and their generalist foraging tendencies limits our ability to use them as sentinels for DA outbreaks in a specific geographic area. Collectively, our results show that DA was produced a few kilometers from the coastline, and anchovies were the most powerful DA vector in coastal-pelagic zones (their DA loads exceeded the 20 ppm FDA regulatory limits for human consumption), while mussels did not contain detectable DA and only reflect in situ DA, δ13C, and δ15N values. Our study demonstrates the efficacy of combining multiple biogeochemical tracers to improve HAB monitoring efforts and identify the main routes of DA transfer across habitats and trophic levels.

Effects of harmful algal blooms on stress levels and immune functioning in wetland-associated songbirds and reptiles

Harmful algal blooms (HABs), caused primarily by nutrient input from agricultural runoff, are a threat to freshwater systems worldwide, and are further predicted to increase in size, frequency, and intensity due to climate change. HABs occur annually in the Western Basin of Lake Erie (Ohio, USA), and these blooms become toxic when dominated by cyanobacteria that produce the liver toxin microcystin. Although we are making substantial inroads toward understanding how microcystin affects human health, less is known about effects of microcystin on wildlife exposed to HABs. Wetland-associated songbirds (barn swallows, Hirundo rustica, and red-winged blackbirds, Agelaius phoeniceus) and reptiles (Northern watersnakes, Nerodia sipedon, and painted turtles, Chrysemys picta) were sampled from wetlands exposed to chronically high microcystin levels due to a prolonged HAB event, and from unexposed, control wetlands. Physiological stress levels and several measures of immune functioning were compared between the HAB-exposed and control populations. Physiological stress levels, measured as heterophil:lymphocyte ratios, were higher in barn swallows, red-winged blackbirds, and Northern watersnakes exposed to a chronic HAB compared to unexposed, control individuals, but painted turtles did not differ in physiological stress levels between HAB-exposed and control individuals. Neither barn swallows nor red-winged blackbirds differed in immune functioning between populations, but HAB-exposed watersnakes had higher bactericidal capacity than control snakes, and HAB-exposed painted turtles had lower bactericidal capacity than control turtles. These results suggest that even when HABs do not cause direct mortality of exposed wildlife, they can potentially act as a physiological stressor across several taxa, and furthermore may compromise immune functioning in some species.

Effects of harmful algal blooms on regulated disinfection byproducts: Findings from five utility case studies

AbstractDuring a cyanobacterial harmful algal bloom (HAB) event, drinking water treatment systems face the challenge of balancing acute and chronic health risks by treating the potentially toxin‐producing HAB and simultaneously managing for disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation. To explore the relationship between HAB events and DBP formation, a unique full‐scale study, including paired source water and finished water monitoring, was conducted at five drinking water utilities with HAB‐impacted source waters. Results confirm bench‐scale findings that HAB events in source water contribute to increases in DBP precursors. However, unlike results from laboratory studies, source water HAB‐related parameters and finished water DBPs were not consistently correlated at the five study utilities. These different outcomes suggest regulated DBP formation in utilities with HAB‐impacted source water is complex and influenced by a variety of site‐specific conditions, including source water conditions and data available for operational decision‐making, timing of treatment adjustments, and key operational choices.

Distribution of phytoplankton in Pangkep Waters, South Sulawesi, Indonesia

The coastal water of Pangkajene Kepulauan, or Pangkep, in South Sulawesi has been influenced by high anthropogenic activities, where the inflow of nutrient from the land has caused several cases of harmful algal blooms and mass fish mortality. Thus, it was important to understand the community structure and distribution of phytoplankton, with particular interest on the bloom-forming and harmful genus, to better mitigate the effects of harmful algal blooms in the future. Sample collection for this study was conducted on May 2017 at 22 stations from three zones, the northern, middle, and southern coastal area of Pangkep. From this study, the phytoplankton density in Pangkep was found varied between 2.179 × 106 cells/m3 to 2.192 × 108 cells/m3, with the highest density of phytoplankton was observed in the northern and southern area of Pangkep. On the other hand, the middle area has lower phytoplankton density but has the highest diversity and evenness. Two stations, station 15 and 21, have a distinct phytoplankton community structure which might have caused by a combined effect of temperature and nutrient input from the land. Twenty-nine genera of phytoplankton were observed, with the diatoms Skeletonema as the most dominant genus which contributes to over 95% of total phytoplankton density. The occurrence of Ceratium, which once was found as a dominant genus in Pangkep coastal and estuaries, has caused a concern whether it might blooms and replacing the dominance of diatoms in these areas.

Use of biological trait analysis of periphytic protozoan assemblages for evaluating effects of harmful algal blooms on ecological quality status in marine ecosystem

The effects of two harmful algal bloom (HAB) species Alexandrium tamarense and Gymnodinium catenatum on ecological quality status were studied using 14-day protozoan samples as test organisms. A fuzzy coding system with four traits and 11 categories of the test organisms was used for biological trait analysis. Five treatments were designed following the concentrations of 100, 102, 103, 104 and 105 cell ml‐1 of each algal species. The community-weighted means were used to summarize the functioning process of the test organism assemblages. The community functioning of the protozoa showed a significant change in the treatments with high algal concentrations (104 and 105 cell ml−1). The functional richness of the test organisms showed continuous increasing trend from 102 to 104 cell ml−1, and sharply dropped. These findings suggest that the BTA may be used as a useful tool for assessing the effects of HABs on ecological quality status in marine ecosystems.

Controlling harmful algal blooms (HABs) by coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation using liquid ferrate and clay

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) occur worldwide and threaten the quality of marine life, public health, and membrane facilities in Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) desalination plants. The effects of HABs on seawater desalination plants include extensive membrane fouling, increased coagulant consumption and plant shutdown. To determine how to mitigate such effects, this study assessed if low doses (0.01 mg/L, 0.10 mg/L, and 1.00 mg/L) of liquid ferrate (58% yield) and kaolin or montmorillonite clays alone could remove algal organic matter in coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation (CFS) pretreatment desalination systems. Results showed that 0.01 mg/L of liquid ferrate coagulant removed 42% of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), 52% of biopolymers (BP), 71% of algal cells, and 99.5% of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). At a dose of 0.01 mg/L, clays exhibited high removal of turbidity (up to 88%), BP (up to 80%) and algal cells (up to 67%). The combination of liquid ferrate (58% yield) as a coagulant with kaolin or montmorillonite clays as coagulant aids in CFS pretreatment led to 72% removal of DOC, 86% of BP, and 84% of algal cells with a fixed dose of 0.01 mg/L for each. Findings from this study can help SWRO plants improve the performance of pretreatment systems during algal bloom events by reducing the consumption of coagulants while also maintaining high removal efficiencies.

Passive acoustic listening stations (PALS) show rapid onset of ecological effects of harmful algal blooms in real time

Monitoring ecological changes in marine ecosystems is expensive and time-consuming. Passive acoustic methods provide continuous monitoring of soniferous species, are relatively inexpensive, and can be integrated into a larger network to provide enhanced spatial and temporal coverage of ecological events. We demonstrate how these methods can be used to detect changes in fish populations in response to a Karenia brevis red tide harmful algal bloom by examining sound spectrum levels recorded by two land-based passive acoustic listening stations (PALS) deployed in Sarasota Bay, Florida, before and during a red tide event. Significant and temporally persistent decreases in sound spectrum levels were recorded in real time at both PALS in four frequency bands spanning 0.172–20 kHz after K. brevis cells were opportunistically sampled near the stations. The decrease in sound spectrum levels and increase in K. brevis cell concentrations also coincided with decreased catch per unit effort (CPUE) and species density per unit effort (SDPUE) data for non-clupeid fish and soniferous fish species, as well as increased reports of marine mammal mortalities in the region. These findings demonstrate how PALS can detect and report in real time ecological changes from episodic disturbances, such as harmful algal blooms.

Insights into the effects of harmful algal bloom on ecological quality status using body-size spectrum of biofilm-dwelling ciliates in marine ecosystems

The effects of two harmful algae Alexandrium tamarense and Gymnodinium catenatum on ecological quality status were identified using biofilm-dwelling ciliate assemblage as test organism communities. The body-size spectra of the test ciliates were observed at a gradient of cell concentrations of both algal species: 100 (control), followed by102, 103, 104 and 105 cells ml−1. The test ciliates showed clear variations in body-size spectra along the concentration gradients of both algal species. In terms of probability density, the ciliates generally peaked at low levels of algal concentrations (100–104 cells ml−1) in small size forms, followed by the forms with large sizes at the concentration of 105 cells ml−1 of both algal species. Bootstrapped-average analysis demonstrated a significant change in body-size spectrum when algal concentrations were higher than 104 cells ml−1. It is suggested that the body-size spectrum of the ciliates may be used to indicate the effects of harmful algal bloom.

Ecological insights into assembly processes and network structures of bacterial biofilms in full-scale biologically active carbon filters under ozone implementation

To address the adverse effects of harmful algal blooms, there are increased demands over the implementation of ozone coupled with biologically active carbon (BAC) filters in the drinking water treatment plants. Although the microbial biofilms are vital elements to support the proper performance of BAC filters, except for taxonomic affiliations, little is known about the assembly mechanisms of microbial communities in the full-scale BAC filters. This study aimed to examine how the assembly processes and their associated factors (e.g., influent characteristics, biological interactions) drive the temporal dynamics of bacterial communities in full-scale BAC filters, which underwent ozone implementation (five consecutive seasons from 2017 to 2018). The results revealed that along with the increase of bacterial taxonomic richness and evenness, stochastic processes became more crucial to determine the bacterial community assembly in the summer and autumn after ozone implementation (relative contribution: 61.23% and 83.75%, respectively). Moreover, their corresponding networks possessed simple network structures with lower modularity than other seasons, which implied lesser biological interactions among bacterial populations. The correlation between taxonomic and predicted functional diversities using functional redundancy index indicated that relatively high levels of bacterial functional redundancy (>0.83) were generally present in BAC filters. However, compared to other seasons, significantly higher degrees of functional redundancy existed in the summer and autumn after ozone implementation (0.85 ± 0.01 and 0.86 ± 0.01, respectively). Overall, this work improves our understanding of the microbial ecology of full-scale BAC filters by providing a conceptual framework that characterizes bacterial biofilm assembly processes relevant to performance optimization of full-scale BAC filters.

Cell density-dependent suppression on the development and photosynthetic activities of Sargassum fusiformis embryos by dinoflagellate Karenia mikimotoi

Lots of research has demonstrated that macroalgae can strongly inhibit the growth of harmful algal bloom (HAB) species in general. However, the effects of HABs or HAB-forming species on macrophytes are still largely uncharacterized until now. In the present study, the effects of the dinoflagellate Karenia mikimotoi cell density gradient, live cell suspension (LC), ruptured cell suspension (RC) as well as the cell-free supernatant (FC) of K. mikimotoi at 1000 μg Chla l−1 (~1.0 × 105 cells ml−1) on the development and photosynthesis of Sargassum fusiforme embryos were investigated in a series of laboratory experiments. The results showed that co-cultivation with K. mikimotoi at 500 μg Chla l−1(~5.0 × 104 cells ml−1) and higher cell densities significantly (P<0.05) inhibited the development, pigment content and photosynthetic activities of the embryos. In addition, the inhibitory effects increased with increased cell densities and prolonged exposure time. Compared to the embryos cultured with the F/2 medium (Control), exposure to LC, RC and FC of K. mikimotoi at 1000 μg Chla l−1for 2 weeks all led to decreased relative growth rate (RGR), chlorophyll (Chl) a content, carotenoids (Car) content and photosynthetic activities of the embryos, with LC and RC exhibiting the maximal and the minimal suppression. The dominant inhibitory effects of FC on the embryos indicated that the suppression was mainly caused by the allelochemicals, while the slightest inhibitory effects of RC on the embryos suggested that some intracellular growth-promoting substances were synchronously released when K. mikimotoi cells lyzed. In addition, the most severe growth suppression of embryos by LC indicated that intact cell contact by K. mikimotoi probably also contributed to the inhibitory effects. These results indicated that a dense HAB formed by K. mikimotoi could seriously suppress the development and photosynthesis of S. fusiforme embryos and eventually reduce the seedlings stock.

Blooming of Gonyaulax polygramma along the southeastern Arabian Sea: Influence of upwelling dynamics and anthropogenic activities

The influence of upwelling on the phytoplankton community was examined during the upwelling-relaxation period in the southeastern Arabian Sea. Elevated upwelling intensity during the summer monsoon season of 2016 resulted in the re-suspension of harmful dinoflagellates into the surface water. Further, the surplus of phosphorus (P) inputs into the coastal waters from estuarine runoff during the upwelling-relaxation period induced blooming of Gonyaulax polygramma (4.9 × 106 cells L−1). Results from canonical correspondence analysis revealed that elevated upwelling intensity, P and salinity during the year 2016 likely triggered the bloom of G. polygramma in the study region. HABs like G. polygramma threaten fish stocks such as sardines which have a vital role in the ecosystem. Studies on phytoplankton communities and nutrient dynamics in upwelling systems would be useful in predicting the incidence/toxic effects of harmful algal blooms as these regions have a high potential for fisheries.

Regulation of nitrogen dynamics at the sediment-water interface during HAB degradation and subsequent reoccurrence.

The effects of harmful algal blooms (HABs) on nutrient dynamics have been extensively studied; however, the response of nitrogen to continuous HAB degradation and subsequent reoccurrence is not well understood. Here, a small-scale experiment was conducted to assess how nitrogen in the sediment–water interface (SWI) responds to HAB degradation and subsequent reoccurrence at different initial algal densities. The results showed that during the algae decomposition stage, the NH4+–N flux of the SWI remained positive but decreased with the increase in algal density from 3.5 × 107 to 2.3 × 108 cells per L, indicating that the sediment was the source of NH4+–N. In contrast, the deposit was a sink of NO3−–N. However, during the reoccurrence of HAB, the distribution of NH4+–N and NO3−–N fluxes was completely converted. Nitrogen flux analysis throughout algae decomposition and reoccurrence indicated that although the sediment acted as a sink of nitrogen, the flux was dependent on the initial algal density. Our results confirmed that algae decomposition and reoccurrence would greatly affect the nitrogen cycle of the SWI, during which dissolved oxygen (DO) and initial algal density dominated. This study is the first to show that the regulation of nitrogen flux and migration changes during continuous HAB decomposition and subsequent reoccurrence.

Effects of Harmful Algal Blooms on Fish: Insights from Prymnesium parvum

Blooms of the planktonic alga Prymnesium parvum pose a global threat, causing fish kills worldwide. Early studies on the exposure of fish to P. parvum indicate that toxic effects are related to gill damage. The more strictly defined concept of adverse outcome pathways has been suggested as a replacement for the mode of action in toxicology studies. In this study, rainbow trout (Onchorhyncus mykiss) were exposed to P. parvum. During exposure, oxygen consumption was determined by respirometry, and ventilation and coughing rate were determined via video surveillance. Per breath oxygen consumption was calculated to assess the ventilation effort to obtain a unit of oxygen. A second experiment monitored fish behavior to assess recovery. The results indicated that oxygen consumption initially increased, but on average fell below the standard oxygen consumption at 70% relative exposure. Being a function of ventilation frequency and oxygen consumption, the per breath oxygen consumption decreased throughout exposure. Behavioral results determined that short-term P. parvum exposure subsequently caused the exposed fish to seek flow refuge immediately and to a greater extent than unexposed fish. The adverse outcome pathway of P. parvum on rainbow trout is that P. parvum acts as a gill irritant resulting in non-recoverable respiratory failure.

Food Webs of the Delta, Suisun Bay, and Suisun Marsh: An Update on Current Understanding and Possibilities for Management

This paper reviews and highlights recent research findings on food web processes since an earlier review by Kimmerer et al. (2008). We conduct this review within a conceptual framework of the Delta–Suisun food web, which includes both temporal and spatial components. The temporal component of our framework is based on knowledge that the landscape has changed markedly from historical conditions. The spatial component of our framework acknowledges that the food web is not spatially static; it varies regionally and across habitat types within regions. The review highlights the idea of a changing baseline with respect to food web function. New research also indicates that interactions between habitat-specific food webs vary across the current landscape. For example, based on early work in the south Delta, the food web associated with submerged aquatic vegetation was thought to provide little support to species of concern; however, data from other regions of the estuary suggest that this conceptual model may not apply across the entire region. Habitat restoration has been proposed as a method of re-establishing historic food web processes to support species of concern. Benefits are likely for species that directly access such restored habitats, but are less clear for pelagic species. Several topics require attention to further improve the knowledge of food webs needed to support effective management, including: (1) synthesis of factors responsible for low pelagic biomass; (2) monitoring and research on effects of harmful algal blooms; (3) broadening the scope of long-term monitoring; (4) determining benefits of tidal wetland restoration to species of concern, including evaluations of interactions of habitat-specific food webs; and (5) interdisciplinary analysis and synthesis. The only certainty is that food webs will continue to change in response to the changes in the physical environment and new species invasions.

Evolutionary distinctiveness of fatty acid and polyketide synthesis in eukaryotes.

Fatty acids, which are essential cell membrane constituents and fuel storage molecules, are thought to share a common evolutionary origin with polyketide toxins in eukaryotes. While fatty acids are primary metabolic products, polyketide toxins are secondary metabolites that are involved in ecologically relevant processes, such as chemical defence, and produce the adverse effects of harmful algal blooms. Selection pressures on such compounds may be different, resulting in differing evolutionary histories. Surprisingly, some studies of dinoflagellates have suggested that the same enzymes may catalyse these processes. Here we show the presence and evolutionary distinctiveness of genes encoding six key enzymes essential for fatty acid production in 13 eukaryotic lineages for which no previous sequence data were available (alveolates: dinoflagellates, Vitrella, Chromera; stramenopiles: bolidophytes, chrysophytes, pelagophytes, raphidophytes, dictyochophytes, pinguiophytes, xanthophytes; Rhizaria: chlorarachniophytes, haplosporida; euglenids) and 8 other lineages (apicomplexans, bacillariophytes, synurophytes, cryptophytes, haptophytes, chlorophyceans, prasinophytes, trebouxiophytes). The phylogeny of fatty acid synthase genes reflects the evolutionary history of the organism, indicating selection to maintain conserved functionality. In contrast, polyketide synthase gene families are highly expanded in dinoflagellates and haptophytes, suggesting relaxed constraints in their evolutionary history, while completely absent from some protist lineages. This demonstrates a vast potential for the production of bioactive polyketide compounds in some lineages of microbial eukaryotes, indicating that the evolution of these compounds may have played an important role in their ecological success.
