Effects of DTPA, HEDTA, and EDDS on the Growth of Watermelon and Chemical Properties of Plastic Film House Soil

A chelating agent helps crops to reuse as nutrients by mobilizing salts from the soil. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of Diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA), N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-ethylene diaminetriacetic acid (HEDTA), and Ethylene diamine disuccininc acid (EDDS) for improving plant growth and reusing accumulated nutrients in soils of plastic film house. Two experiments were carried out of follows: i) For the incubation test, the availability of nutrients were examined for soils treated with distilled water, 1 mM of DTPA, HEDTA and EDDS solutions. ii) In the pot test, the impacts of watermelon growth response were examined by adding 0.5, 1, and 5 mM of chelating agent to soil. In incubation test, application of chelating agents increased the availability of soil nutrients in the following order : DTPA ≒ HEDTA > EDDS > distilled water. However, biomass of watermelon in pot test, tended to be highest in EDDS 1 mM. The absorption amount of N, P, and K of crop in EDDS 1 mM was similar to that of NPK treatment and K, Ca, Mg, and Fe tended to be high. Soil Electrical conductivity (EC) of 1 mM EDDS showed a 66% decrease compared to no treatment. These results showed that EDDS could be improved the watermelon growth. Further research is needed to evaluate the effects of EDDS for plant growth on field scale.Difference in watermelon biomass by chelating agents (DTPA, HEDTA, and EDDS) and their concentrations (0.5, 1, and 5 mM) treated in salt-accumulated soil under pot scale (†Duncan’s multiple range test (p < 0.05), ‡Relative biomass percent of other treatments compared to NPK).

Ionic liquid extractants in molecular diluents: Extraction behavior of europium (III) in quarternary ammonium-based ionic liquids

The ionic liquids, tri-n-octylmethylammonium bis(2-ethylhexyl)phosphate ([A336]+[DEHP]−) and tri-n-octylmethylammonium bis(2-ethylhexyl)diglycolamate ([A336]+[DGA]−) were prepared and characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy. The extraction behavior of europium (III) in the solution of these ionic liquids present in different molecular diluents was studied as a function of various parameters such as pH, nature of diluent, concentration of ionic liquid. The data obtained were compared with those obtained in a solution composed of the precursors of ionic liquid. The extraction of europium (III) in [A336]+[DEHP]− and [A336]+[DGA]− ionic liquids showed a strong dependence on the nature of molecular diluent used. The distribution ratio of Eu(III) increased with increase of pH; at pH>2, the distribution ratios obtained in ionic liquids were much higher than their precursors. The effect of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) on the extraction of Am(III) and Eu(III) at a fixed pH was studied to separate europium (III) from americium (III). Superior extraction of the target metals and excellent separation factors achieved with the use of these ionic liquids in conventional diluents indicates the feasibility of separating lanthanides from actinides.

Kinetic studies on spin trapping of superoxide and hydroxyl radicals generated in NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase-paraquat systems. Effect of iron chelates.

Electron spin resonance (ESR) studies on spin trapping of superoxide and hydroxyl radicals by 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-1-oxide (DMPO) were performed in NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase-paraquat systems at pH 7.4. Spin adduct concentrations were determined by comparing ESR spectra of the adducts with the ESR spectrum of a stable radical solution. Kinetic analysis in the presence of 100 microM desferrioxamine B (deferoxamine) showed that: 1) the oxidation of 1 mol of NADPH produces 2 mol of superoxide ions, all of which can be trapped by DMPO when extrapolated to infinite concentration; 2) the rate constant for the reaction of superoxide with DMPO was 1.2 M-1 s-1; 3) the superoxide spin adduct of DMPO (DMPO-OOH) decays with a half-life of 66 s and the maximum level of DMPO-OOH formed can be calculated by a simple steady state equation; and 4) 2.8% or less of the DMPO-OOH decay occurs through a reaction producing hydroxyl radicals. In the presence of 100 microM EDTA, 5 microM Fe(III) ions nearly completely inhibited the formation of the hydroxyl radical adduct of DMPO (DMPO-OH) as well as the formation of DMPO-OOH and, when 100 microM hydrogen peroxide was present, produced DMPO-OH exclusively. Fe(III)-EDTA is reduced by superoxide and the competition of superoxide and hydrogen peroxide in the reaction with Fe(II)-EDTA seems to be reflected in the amounts of DMPO-OOH and DMPO-OH detected. These effects of EDTA can be explained from known kinetic data including a rate constant of 6 x 10(4) M-1 s-1 for reduction of DMPO-OOH by Fe(II)-EDTA. The effect of diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DETAPAC) on the formation of DMPO-OOH and DMPO-OH was between deferoxamine and EDTA, and about the same as that of endogenous chelator (phosphate).

Effect of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid and procaine on hemorrhage induced by rattlesnake venom.

Nineteen compounds and seven combinations of compounds were tested for their ability to neutralize the hemorrhagic activity of Crotalus atrox venom in vitro and in vivo. Two compounds and four combinations were effective in reducing hemorrhage in an in vivo test in which the venom was injected before injection of compounds. DTPA plus procaine HCl was the most effective combination and reduced hemorrhage when injected 1, 5, or 15 minutes after injection of venom. DTPA-procaine reduced hemorrhage induced by injection of C. atrox venom into dogs as well as mice. DTPA in combination with procaine did not reduce myonecrosis or lethality resulting from injection of venom into mice, but it could be used in conjunction with antivenin to treat local tissue damage resulting from rattlesnake venom poisoning.
