Ethogram of non-verbal behaviours associated with emotional regulation and stress response in children and adolescents with complex trauma

Abstract Complex trauma is a clinical concept developed to address the nature and effects of interpersonal traumatic experiences over the development of children and adolescents. To contribute to the development of ecologically valid diagnostic tools and a better understanding of the effects of complex trauma, an ethogram of emotional regulation and stress response behaviours was proposed and used as the main instrument in the Crossed-Puzzles Game. In total 84 children and adolescents aged 6–14 (50% of children with complex trauma in state protective care) were selected from institutions and the community. Both groups were matched by age, sex, and socioeconomic status. PCA, PERMANOVA, Mann-Whitney’s U, Pearson correlations, and logistic regression analyses were performed. The ethogram’s category ‘Externalising of frustration’ was identified as one of the strongest predictors for the complex trauma group. The ethogram’s validity as a research and assessment instrument from a clinical ethology perspective of complex trauma in psychology was discussed.

Emotion-focused therapy for complex trauma

ABSTRACTThis article describes emotion-focused therapy for complex trauma (EFTT​​). EFTT is an evidence-based, short-term treatment for childhood abuse and neglect that posits the therapeutic relationship and emotional processing of trauma material as key mechanisms of change​​. This paper outlines sources of disturbance and long-term effects of complex trauma. It reviews the theoretical framework on which EFTT is based, mechanisms of change and phases of treatment, as well as supporting research. Primary interventions are demonstrated using a case example from a published video of a single session​​.

Advocacy and empowerment: Group therapy for LGBT asylum seekers.

In countries worldwide, LGBT individuals are subject to persecution and discrimination, including grave human rights violations based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. Asylum provides a mechanism for LGBT individuals fleeing such persecution to legally remain in the United States. However, asylum is not guaranteed, and the asylum-seeking process may be particularly challenging for individuals with complex trauma histories. Although many LGBT asylum seekers are referred to individual psychotherapy by their legal counsel to prepare for the asylum process and to mitigate risks for retraumatization, many decline due to fear, shame, and cultural barriers, among other factors. Thus, we offer a model of group therapy for LGBT asylum seekers, rooted in multicultural and empowerment frameworks, which aims to address the unique concerns and challenges faced by LGBT asylum seekers.
