Stratified differences: the mediation role of international non-governmental organizations

Since the end of the Cold War, the world has become increasingly multipolar, and internal conflicts have gradually become one of the main forms of armed conflicts in the world. In order to better promote world peace, it is essential to mediate conflicts through multiple forces. With the continuous development of international non-governmental organizations, the mediation of international non-governmental organizations has become the mainstream in this field. However, the statute of limitations of mediation by international ngos has always been a hot issue. On the basis of summarizing previous literatures, this paper classifies the conflict levels according to the bottom and top conflicts, and further examines the effectiveness of international ngos in regulating conflicts from the intensity and degree of conflicts, so as to judge whether international ngos can cope with crises in a reasonable way. Based on the analysis of the effectiveness of international ngos in conflict resolution and the current international situation, this paper puts forward corresponding suggestions for China to better participate in international governance.

The paper focuses on the effectiveness of NGOs' regarding income-generating activities, thedecision-making process, women-related issues such as health and empowerment, and politicaland legal challenges affecting rural women as they are the most disadvantaged group in societyliving in deplorable poverty, which is one of the main reasons for women's disempowerment inBangladesh. Through the provision of microcredit, NGOs' are considerably reducing poverty inBangladesh by giving the underprivileged access to options for income production and self-employment. The present research aims to identify the role of NGOs' in poverty eradicationand to analyze rural women's socio-economic empowerment as the outcome of microcreditinterventions. To conduct the study, primary and secondary data are used. The result shows thatwomen contribute more to household income and can participate in decision-making after re-ceiving and using microcredit. The socio-economic condition and empowerment situation of ru-ral women improved from the loans received from the NGOs but also due to additional trainingand making them more aware of education and modern technology regarding income generating.

Evaluating the effectiveness of utilization of health communication interventions on sexual and reproductive health of the Rohingya women living in Cox’s Bazar refugee camp

ObjectivesThis study aimed to examine the effectiveness of NGOs' health communication interventions (HCIs) regarding sexual and reproductive health (SRH) among the Rohingya women living in the refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. MethodsA camp-based cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted from November 10, 2019, to January 10, 2020, among 415 Rohingya married women of reproductive age (above 18–49 years) living in the refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. The study participants were selected using a convenient sampling. The independent-sample t-test and hierarchical regression analysis were performed using IBM SPSS version 24.0. ResultsDifferent myths and perceptions of taboo are common among the Rohingya women regarding SRH which imposes some restrictions on them. Of the Rohingya women, 79.8 percent ever had a consultation with non-government organizations' (NGOs) appointed health care providers (doctors/nurses) regarding SRH issues, while only 68.4 percent of them had a door visit by the NGO workers in this regard. Moreover, 62.7 percent participated in NGO’s SRH communication program, whereas three-fourths understood the SRH messages appropriately. However, the study findings reported significant differences (p ≤ .001) in the mean scores of all items related to participants' SRH status for the difference in the utilization level of health communication interventions. Regression analysis shows that the Rohingya women’s utilization of NGOs' health communication interventions appeared as stronger predictors than socioeconomic variables for better SRH status. At the same time, β values indicate that the Rohingya women’s interpersonal communication with a health care provider and understanding the messages of communication activities are reported as the strongest predictors of outcome variables. ConclusionHealth communication interventions significantly influence positive changes in women’s SRH. Accordingly, this study recommends strengthening communication interventions using behavioral change theories and strategic communication approaches as it is difficult to change their socioeconomic status in existing settings.

Non-Governmental Organizational Factors That Indicate A Project's Success: Case Of Bamenda-Cameroon

Methods from the field of project management are crucial to the timely and successful creation of cutting-edge technologies and systems. The criteria used to evaluate the success of a project manager's efforts will have varying levels of significance based on the individual's position within the project. This paper set intended to discover what makes NGOs' projects in Bamenda successful. A causal research strategy was used for this investigation. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to examine the survey data collected from employees of SIRDEP and CARITAS Bamenda. The structural modelling equation found that public education and involvement positively influenced the outcomes of NGOs' projects in Bamenda. The study's author also demonstrated that the effectiveness of NGOs' projects in Bamenda was bolstered by political influence from inside the country. It was also shown that NGOs in Bamenda benefited from using a project management technique. Conversely, PPM was shown to have a detrimental impact on the project success of NGOs in Bamenda. Analyses of the data also showed that NGOs in Bamenda benefited significantly when their human resource stocks were high. In order to improve the project's chances of success, the research suggests that the project management office or committee place a greater emphasis on community awareness and engagement. The report also suggests that internal political influence be boosted to increase project efficacy and, ultimately, success. The research concludes that a more systematic approach to project management is necessary to raise the success rate of initiatives. Stressing the importance of a well-developed project management approach over the whole project life cycle is essential.

NGOs as new Guardians of the Treaties? Analysing the effectiveness of NGOs as decentralised enforcers of EU law

ABSTRACT The European Union is increasingly resorting to a decentralised enforcement strategy in which it relies less on the Commission-initiated infringement procedure, and more on domestic litigation by particularly NGOs. In order to better understand whether this is a suitable strategy to tackle the compliance deficit, we need more insight into NGOs as decentralised enforcers of EU law. What do NGOs do to stimulate domestic compliance, and is this a potentially effective alternative to the centralised enforcement strategies? Analysing the actions by the German NGO Deutsche Umwelthilfe in relation to the Ambient Air Quality Directive, reveals high potential for the role to be played by NGOs. This exploratory case illustrates that particularly the strategy of flooding the country with a wave of legal proceedings was effective in increasing the salience of the topic, thereby indirectly releasing those capacities that the authorities had still lacked to comply.

Social media dissemination of counter accounts and stakeholder support – evidence from greenpeace’s “Save the Arctic” campaign on Facebook

ABSTRACT Prior studies have examined NGOs’ accounting practices and the implications of such practices within the social media realm. However, we know little about how NGOs use social media to disseminate counter accounts and the impacts of such dissemination beyond social media platforms. This paper examines whether NGOs’ dissemination of counter accounts can mobilise stakeholder support in a campaign against corporate actions. Drawing on Castells’ network-making perspective and the notion of dialogic accounting, I argue that social media dissemination of counter accounts strengthens NGOs’ network-making power so that a wide range of corporate stakeholders can be engaged, and a strong network can be potentially formed to increase the effectiveness of NGOs’ campaigns. Drawing on a unique dataset of Greenpeace “Save The Arctic” (STA) global petition signatories and stakeholder interactions from a sample of 8,336 Greenpeace Facebook messages related to the STA campaign, I find that stakeholder support is positively associated with stakeholder interactions with disseminated counter accounts and the number of Facebook accounts connected in disseminating such information. Additional analyses also reveal that Greenpeace disseminates counter accounts via social media to attract policymaker attention and the disseminated counter accounts are associated with public opinions towards climate change. Overall, this study sheds light on the implications of NGOs’ dissemination of counter accounts on social media in initiating social activism and accumulating power against irresponsible corporate practices.

Non-DRR NGOs strategies for livelihood development in the coastal communities of Bangladesh: a case study

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of non-DRR NGOs’ programs focusing on their contribution to the uplift livelihood of the disaster-affected coastal communities. Researchers conducted an empirical study in Satkhira, the most disaster-prone coastal district of Bangladesh, and interviewed 45 respondents, including NGO officials, local government bodies, and community beneficiaries, applying purposive sampling. For analyzing data, Researchers used thematic analysis methods with NVivo software's assistance. Study findings reveal that NGOs’ community-based awareness and advocacy, mobilization of local resources, and primary healthcare programs contributed to enhancing community livelihood by promoting their attitudes and capacities to cope with disasters. However, their microfinance and infrastructure-related programs reinforced community vulnerability and exposure to disaster by increasing poverty, exclusion, and disparities among them. In conclusion, the study signifies the value of integrating sustainable infrastructure, environmental impact assessment on health and agriculture for promoting effective livelihood strategies in coastal communities.

Does the Media’s Anti-Western Bias Affect its Portrayal of NGOs in the Muslim World? Assessing Newspapers in Pakistan

The media has a major influence on public opinions and legitimacy for NGOs, which can have a serious impact on the effectiveness of NGOs’ programs. However, media biases often affect the framing of media objects. For instance, western countries are often portrayed negatively by the media of the Muslims countries. This anti-western bias is less prevalent in English-language media when compared to the local languages newspapers as the English-language media generally target the elites who often hold less anti-western opinions than the general population. As NGOs are usually considered a western construct in the Muslim world, I test whether the media’s sensitivity to its consumers’ sentiments extends to the coverage of NGOs by comparing English and local language (Urdu) newspapers in Pakistan. I confirm that Urdu newspapers portray NGOs more negatively than English-language newspapers and are more likely to question NGOs’ effectiveness and accountability.

Effectiveness of NGOs and Quality of Life of the Beneficiaries

<p>Organizational effectiveness influences the NGOs performance in various important aspects like stakeholders’ satisfaction, expertise solutions in their area of operation, goal achievement and innovation. NGOs operate in order to improve their beneficiaries’ quality of life aspects. The present study focuses on the relationship between the effectiveness of NGOs and the quality of life experiences of their beneficiaries. Using standard stratified disproportionate random sampling method 10 NGOs were selected, further from the sample list of 10 NGOs 100 staff members and 300 beneficiaries were selected for the purpose of the present study. The result indicated that the effectiveness of NGOs and QOL of the beneficiaries are positively and significantly correlated. To be more specific “ Programme Effectiveness”, as a dimension of the effectiveness of NGOs was the strongest correlate of QOL, followed by “ Agency Appreciation”, “ Innovation” and “Grass Root Impact”. All the least correlated dimensions are “Target Group Involvement” and “Resource Appreciation”. </p><p> </p>

Organisational Effectiveness of NGOs with Reference to Personal Characteristics of Staff

&lt;div&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Measuring Organisation effectiveness in the perspective of NGOs staff can give more effective feedback, with this feedback NGOs can able to know the strengths and weaknesses in given dimensions. The present study attempts to analyse an organizational effectiveness of NGOs as perceived by staff. The data have been collected from ten NGOs working in Telangana, India. Select NGOs identified by using Stratified disproportionate sampling method in which 100 staff members from 10 NGOs have responded. This study uses the standardised 28 items scale i.e. NGOs Effectiveness Instrument (NEI) to measure the Organisational effectiveness developed by Swapan Garian(1993) additionally 3 items have been included in the instrument. The result indicated that organisational effectiveness of NGOs affected by NGOs staff personal characteristics namely gender, age, professional qualification, designation, place of work and work experience. The strategies and effectiveness of conservation ngos in the global voluntary standards: The case of the roundtable on sustainable palm-oil

Conservation non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and firms have been promoting global voluntary standards, such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), to produce environmentally responsible goods in tropical countries. This research seeks to understand the strategies and the effectiveness of conservation NGOs with respect to the RSPO. Our research documents that the conservation NGOs, when engaging with the RSPO, may be divided into four categories based on the type of resources mobilised and the conservation goals: 1) 'Collaborative NGOs' seek to change the system from within by providing scientific research-based information, by holding strategic positions and by creating rules; 2) 'Opponent' remains outside the RSPO while using it as a platform for public campaigns; 3) 'Opportunistic' focuses on conserving geographical areas by adopting either collaborative or opponent strategies to reach their goals; and 4) 'Sceptic' supports communities to secure local land rights. These NGOs have implemented strategies that strengthened RSPO's institution. However, the institutionalisation of the RSPO prevents the NGOs from reaching their goals for three reasons: 1) individual NGOs cannot change strategy; 2) NGOs using different engagement strategies are unable to collaborate; and 3) the sceptic NGOs are structurally excluded from the RSPO, though local land rights are a fundamental matter of concern for biodiversity conservation. NGOs would be more effective in reaching their goals either by focussing on their initial conservation objectives or by strategically collaborating with each other outside the structures of the RSPO.

Organizational problems of non-governmental organizations (NGOS)

The non-governmental sector is a growing worldwide phenomenon. Organizations across the globe account for growing and impressive figures in employment, revenue, services provided and sheer numbers. Whereas the past years have seen quite a few insolvencies and collapses caused by management failures. NGOs concerned with development face the management of a complex and diverse range of issues. NGOs face internal management issues, for example questions of strategic planning, budgeting, staffing, and the governing structure of the organization, growth and change within the organization. NGOs also face the management of external relationships, relations with government, the private sector, other NGOs and with their target communities. All of these come to bear on the possibility of NGOs managing development. The effectiveness of NGOs as actors in development and change depends on successful engagement with both internal and external management questions and also on the successful articulation between issues of internal and external management. Although NGOs share many individual characteristics with other sorts of organizations, the various collections of characteristics that are observable in many NGOs create a package that is quite different from most for-profit organizations (FPOs). Some scholars argued; legal constraints, revenue sources, types of personnel, and the nature of governance in NGOs make them unique. There is a growing debate within the non-governmental management literature and the community of non-governmental about whether NGOs should become more business like.

Exploring the Challenges Threatening the Survival of Ngos in Selected African Countries

Indubitably, the effectiveness and effectiveness of NGOs especially in African countries are increasingly being threatened by a barrage of factors, the huge one being diminishing state of funding. The aim of this article is, through a review of literature methodology to discuss and debate the underpinnings behind NGOs mal performance in selected African countries. Findings indicate that NGOs are weakened by funding challenges, pockets of corruption and embezzlement of funds especially by the top brass management, poor synergy and poor collaboration between them and the government, and inadequately skilled labourforce. The paper recommends to the government and other development partners to mobilize resources to help the NGO fraternity, the government to facilitate a strong collaboration and synergy between itself and the NGOs, as well as with other development partners, and the government to initiate a strong corruption monitoring system within the NGO fraternity. Democracy assistance from the third wave: Polish engagement in Belarus and Ukraine

The role of Western NGOs in the transition of postcommunist nations to democracy has been well documented. In this study, Paulina Pospieszna follows a different trajectory, examining the role of a former aid recipient (Poland), newly democratic itself, and its efforts to aid democratic transitions in the neighbouring states of Belarus and Ukraine. Belarus is widely regarded as the most authoritarian state in the region, while Ukraine is witnessing a slow, if often troubled, democratic consolidation. Each state presents a different set of challenges to outside agencies. As Pospieszna shows, Poland is uniquely positioned to offer effective counsel on the transition to democracy. With similarities of language and culture, and a shared history, combined with strong civic activism and success within the European Union, Poland's regional policies have successfully combined its need for security and a motivation to spread democracy as primary concerns. Pospieszna details the founding, internal workings, goals, and methods of Poland's aid programmes. She then compares the relative degrees of success of each in Belarus and Ukraine and documents the work yet to be done. As her theoretical basis, Pospieszna analyses current thinking on the methods and effectiveness of NGOs in transitions to democracy, particularly U.S.- and European-led aid efforts. She then views the applicability of these methods to the case of Poland and its aid recipients. Overwhelmingly, Pospieszna finds the greatest success in developmental programmes targeting civil society--workers, intellectuals, teachers, students, and other NGO actors. Through extensive interviews with government administrators and NGO workers in Poland and the United States, coupled with archival research, Pospieszna assembles an original perspective on the mitigation of the 'postcommunist divide'. Her work will serve as a model for students and scholars of states in transition, and it provides an overview of both successful and unsuccessful strategies employed by NGOs in democracy assistance.

Are the non‐governmental organizations' web sites effective?

PurposeThis study explores non‐governmental organizations' (NGOs') web sites to determine the extent the web site facilities information quality, system quality and service quality in relation to target audiences.Design/methodology/approachIn order to evaluate the current status of information quality, system quality and service quality on the internet, the research utilizes a content analysis of an international sample of NGOs associated to United Nations.FindingsThis paper provides useful information on some international NGOs' web sites. In this line of work, results indicate that the web site offers a new communication medium with which to maximize support for NGOs and enhance business performance through higher cost‐effectiveness and a more practical manner in which to carry out their tasks. However, the results of this research show that the most web sites have an average effectiveness when communicating interactively. Additionally, this paper provides evidence of current web site effectiveness and advice for its improvement in a specific social sector.Research limitations/implicationsThe main limitation of this study is the sample size and nature because the research has only included some NGOs associated to United Nations, which may bias results. Therefore, other non‐profit organizations whose target audiences are different will be dealt with in future research.Practical implicationsThis research contributes to improving the effectiveness of NGOs' web site bidirectional communication with users, enhancing the quality of the exchange between organization and target audience.Originality/valueThis work aims to help international NGOs improve the interactivity of web site communication through practical advice. Furthermore, this study is an attempt to fill the research gap on the evaluation about the quality web site design of NGOs.

Mapping Challenges of the Romanian NGOs. A Focus on Human Resources

The effectiveness of NGOs, similar to other types of organizations, depends on the quality and implication of their employees and volunteers. The literature highlights the role of learning capabilities, organizational learning, networking and community capacity building in ensuring organizational sustainable development in the NGO sector. In this framework, professional human resources should be an important part of the management strategy. Continuous and personalized training would be also important for NGOs. The present paper presents a qualitative investigation aiming to map the training needs and practices of the NGO sector in Romania, both from the perspective of its representatives and its stakeholders. The findings show a general agreement and concern related to the professionalism of the workers in the sector, as well as related to the lack of explicit responsibility/the feeling of being accountable assumed by the members of the sector. The study also revealed a need for closer cooperation between the members of the Quadruple Helix.

Children and Armed Conflict: The Yugoslav Experience

Using the Yugoslav experience, this paper seeks to analyse and understand the plight of children in war and its aftermath. It also seeks to evaluate and assess the role and effectiveness of NGOs and other aid-providing entities. Data used include personal observations, relevant documents, as well as first-hand accounts. The main conclusion reached in this study is that due to vulnerabilities associated with age, children in armed conflict suffer more than any other social group. The post-war or long-term consequences are often more severe than the difficulties children face during war. The role of NGOs is more helpful during war but less effective when the guns go silent.
