Healthcare Provider Perceptions of the Use of Medical Interpretation in Primary Care.

Sixty-three percent of Latinos/as/x in Alabama, speak English "not well" or "not at all." Effective provider-patient communication is the foundation of successful clinical interactions. Medical interpretation is important to the healthcare provision for patients with limited English proficiency (LEP). We examined Alabama providers' perceptions of working with medical interpreters to identify strategies to improve healthcare provision for LEP patients. We conducted nine semistructured qualitative interviews with primary healthcare providers in western Alabama. We used NVivo to conduct thematic coding and content analysis. Of the nine providers, one self-identified as Latina and the others identified as White. Four participants worked in community clinics and five worked at university-based clinics. Four themes emerged: preference for in-person interpreters over technology-based interpretation; providers' perceptions and expectations of the roles of professional interpreters; challenges in the communication process; and use of family members or other ad hoc interpreters. To meet the needs of Latino/a/x communities, clinical settings should invest in adequate staffing of in-person interpreters, infrastructure and workflow improvements, and the hiring and training of polylingual providers. Capacity-building opportunities to establish team building between interpreters and providers could be useful tools in improving healthcare provision for LEP patients.

Limited English Proficiency and Graves’ Disease at an Urban Safety Net Hospital

IntroductionDecision-making regarding definitive therapy for Graves’ disease requires effective patient-provider communication. We investigated whether patients with limited English proficiency have differences in thyroidectomy outcomes or perioperative management when compared to English proficient (EP) patients at a safety net hospital with high-volume endocrine surgery practice. MethodsRetrospective study of patients who underwent thyroidectomy (2012-2021) for Graves’ disease within a tertiary referral system. Demographics, preoperative factors, and postoperative outcomes were abstracted via chart review and compared between EP and limited English proficient (LEP) patients in univariate analyses. Odds of postoperative complications were assessed via multivariable logistic regression. Time metrics such as time from endocrinology consultation to surgery were compared via Kaplan–Meier analysis and adjusted Cox proportional regression models. ResultsOf 236 patients, 85 (36%) had LEP. Low and equivalent complication rates occurred across language groups (<1% permanent). LEP patients had similar odds of thyroidectomy-specific complications (odds ratio = 1.2; 95% confidence interval 0.6-2.4). Adjusted Cox proportional hazards ratios showed that LEP patients experienced significantly shorter time from endocrinology consultation to surgery compared to EP patients [hazard ratio = 0.7; 95% confidence interval 0.5-0.9]. ConclusionsThyroidectomy-specific complication rate for patients with Graves’ disease was low, and we detected no independent association between complications and English language proficiency. Non-English primary language was independently associated with reduced time from endocrinology consultation to surgery. This finding must be interpreted with nuance and is likely multifactorial. It may reflect a well-organized, efficient system for under-resourced patients, or it may derive from communication barriers that limit robust shared decision-making, thus accelerating time to surgery.

Oncologist Perceptions of Racial Disparity, Racial Anxiety, and Unconscious Bias in Clinical Interactions, Treatment, and Outcomes.

Cancer spares no demographic or socioeconomic group; it is indeed the great equalizer. But its distribution is not equal; when structural discrimination concentrates poverty and race, zip code surpasses genetic code in predicting outcomes. Compared with White patients in the United States, Black patients are less likely to receive appropriate treatment and referral to clinical trials, genetic testing, or palliative care/hospice. In 2021, we administered a survey to 369 oncologists measuring differences in perceptions surrounding racial disparity, racial anxiety, and unconscious bias and adverse influence on clinical interactions, treatment, and outcomes for non-White patients. We analyzed responses by generational age group, sex/gender, race/ethnicity, US region, and selection of "decline to respond." The most significant differences occurred by age group followed by race/ethnicity. Racial disparity was perceived as moderate to very high by 84% of millennial, 69% of Generation X, and 57% of baby boomer oncologists, who were also 86% more likely than millennials and 63% more likely than Generation Xers to perceive low/nonexistent levels of racial anxiety/unconscious bias. Most oncologists rarely or never perceived racial anxiety/unconscious bias as adversely influencing clinical treatment or survival outcomes in non-White patients, and White oncologists were 85% more likely than non-White oncologists to perceive rare/nonexistent influence on referral of non-White patients to palliative care/hospice. The discrepancy between 62% of oncologists perceiving moderate to very high levels of racial anxiety/unconscious bias and 37% associating them with adverse influence on non-White patients shows a disconnect, especially among older oncologists (baby boomers), who were also least likely to select the decline option. Together, these factors hinder effective patient-provider communication and result in differential care and outcomes. Oncologists should uncover their own perceptions surrounding racial disparity, racial anxiety, and unconscious bias and modify their behaviors accordingly. It is this simple-and this complicated. Cancer does not discriminate, and neither should cancer care.

Factors that influence medication adherence in women with fibromyalgia: A path analysis.

To investigate the relationships between depression symptoms, perceived stigma, disease severity, patient-provider communication and medication adherence in fibromyalgia patients. The objectives were to explore how these factors influence treatment adherence and to develop a comprehensive model illustrating their interconnections. Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain syndrome with fatigue, sleep issues and idiopathic pain. Medication adherence is limited by insufficient symptom relief, side effects and costs. Stigma further complicates fibromyalgia. Disease severity affects patient-provider communication. Associations between depression, stigma, severity, communication and adherence in fibromyalgia are unclear. A cross-sectional, correlational study. The STROBE guidelines for cross-sectional studies were followed. Participants included Hebrew-speaking participants who were members of two Facebook groups: 'Shades of Purple' and 'Fibromyalgia- Get to Know!' Between February and April 2022. They undertook evaluations using The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 to gauge depression symptoms, assessed perceived stigma, utilised The Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire to determine disease severity, employed The Patient Reaction Assessment questionnaire for patient-provider communication, and used the 8-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8). Associations between the variables were explored using Pearson's correlations and path analyses. The study included 141 women with fibromyalgia, aged 22 to 76 years. Most reported having a stable partner (69.5%) and 75.2% had children. The treatment adherence levels were as follows: 53.2% (N = 75)-low, 33.3% (N = 47)-medium and 13.5% (N = 19)-high. Depression positively correlated with stigma. Stigma negatively correlated with patient-provider communication. Patient-provider communication positively correlated with treatment adherence. A significant negative indirect effect of depression on treatment adherence through stigma and patient-provider communication was found. Perceived stigma and patient-provider communication played a mediating role in the relationships between depression and treatment adherence among women with fibromyalgia. Addressing stigma related to fibromyalgia and effective patient-provider communication can positively influence treatment adherence. No patient or public contribution.

Enhancing patient education in cancer care: Intelligent cancer patient education model for effective communication

BackgroundThe incidence of cancer is on the rise annually, whereas there exists a significant deficit of healthcare personnel. Inadequate communication between healthcare providers and patients may result in adverse emotional outcomes for the latter and interfere with their treatment progress. A viable solution to alleviate patient distress involves utilizing text generation models as an efficacious tool for delivering patient education. Materials and methodsIn this study, we proposed an intelligent cancer patient education model (ICPEM) based on the pre-trained T5 model. Meanwhile, we presented a new method for optimizing the model's comprehension of the patient's intent through simulating the inquiries that the patient may ask. The datasets used include a doctor and patient dialogue dataset and a cancer patient education scenario dataset. After prompt-tuning, the model is capable of educating patients through four major aspects including medical examination, health care, radiotherapy, chemotherapy. ResultsWe conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the model by employing both automated and manual metrics. Our findings indicate that the responses generated by the model effectively catered to the requirements of patient education. Furthermore, our visualization analysis demonstrated the model's proficiency in processing sentences that are prone to confusion while maintaining a robust comprehension of human intent. Finally, several shortcomings of the model are presented, such as the inadequate amount of knowledge and the limited range of responses. ConclusionWe proposed a method for training and deploying medical language models in a low-resource environment. The proposed model facilitated the comprehension of cancer patients' intentions, resulting in suitable responses, which promotes effective patient-provider communication.

Prioritizing the Precursors of Patients’ Experience in Indian Corporate Hospitals: Application of hybrid RIDIT-GRA approach

Objective: This study aims to identify, understand, and prioritize the influence of distinct patient experience (PX) antecedents that have substantial evidence in shaping the patients’ preferences and experiences in Indian corporate hospitals. The study is expected to assist healthcare managers in the personalization and alignment of clinical services with consumer expectations and demands. Design/ Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted across eight corporate hospitals to collect 220 patient data samples. A recent measurement model, titled ‘Patient Experience Questionnaire’, was adopted to harness pre-validated PX factors and related items. Further, two independent prioritization techniques, Relative to an Identified distribution (RIDIT) analysis and Grey Relational Analysis (GRA), were executed to render item precedence of the precursors of PX. Results: Through RIDIT, items belonging to factors 'doctor services' and 'nursing services' secured favorable performance ratings, whereas items under 'information' and 'next-of-kin' obtained comparatively less favorable responses. There was evidence of minimal deviations when the results were verified through GRA, but the ranks obtained in both the independent techniques (RIDIT &amp; GRA) revealed a robust correlation of 99.5%. Moreover, the applicability of two independent prioritization techniques enhances the rigor and reliability of findings. Conclusions: Although the respondents were mostly satisfied with their care providers, an effective provider-patient communication was not evident in the care system. Patients seemed to be overly dependent on their physicians and showed limited intention to participate in a collaborative process. Lack of patient-centric culture, deficit infrastructure, excessive workload on healthcare providers, and restricted translation of patient-centric concepts into practice deterred organizations from fully benefiting from patients' involvement in clinical facets.

Understanding Professional Medical Interpreters' Perspectives on Advancing Accurate and Culturally Informed Patient-Provider Communication for Filipinos in Hawai'i: Qualitative Analysis.

One in every eight persons in Hawai'i, USA, have limited English proficiency (LEP) and are entitled to free language assistance for federally funded services under Title IV of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. They also have the right to culturally and linguistically appropriate services (CLAS) provided by professional medical interpreters (PMIs). This study's goals were to uncover barriers and facilitators of CLAS from the perspective of PMIs. PMIs for Filipino languages (n = 10) participated in an online survey and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and qualitative data were analyzed using conventional content analysis. Six themes emerged in the qualitative analysis: (1) cultural and social factors that can influence patient-provider communication; (2) barriers to effective patient-provider communication: patient, healthcare provider, and PMI levels; (3) facilitators of effective patient-provider communication: patient, healthcare provider, and PMI levels; (4) COVID-19 and remote interpreting barriers and facilitators; (5) strengths and weaknesses of in-person and stand-by interpreting appointments; and, (6) recommendations: system and provider levels. Proposed interventions could include advertising language services among Filipino communities and educating them about their language rights, providing additional resources for language assistance, employing more PMIs, training staff/providers, and supporting the use of PMIs versus untrained individuals.

Purpose: Parkinson's Disease Nurse Specialists(PDNS) play a vital role in delivering personalized care to individuals affected by Parkinson's disease(PD) and their families. This paper explores the multifaceted responsibilities of PDNS in managing and providing comprehensive care for the unique needs of PD patients. Additionally, it delves deeper into the specialized qualifications and training opportunities available for PDNS, with a particular focus on the United Kingdom's National Health Service(NHS).&#x0D; Method: A systematic review of literature and publications from reputable sources, including PubMed, The Lancet, Parkinson's Europe, and Parkinson's UK, has been conducted to gather pertinent information and insights regarding the crucial role of PDNS in enhancing the quality of life for PD patients. It also includes reviewing the latest PDNS learning pathway guidelines and the EU’s PD care manifesto.&#x0D; Results: A growing number of PD patients and families face communication difficulties with healthcare professionals, particularly consultants. There is a lack of awareness about the disease and its symptoms, which results in delayed diagnosis and inconsistent care plans. During consultations, there is a mismatch between the information provided and the information desired. Publications emphasize the critical roles of PDNS in the delivery of personalized care plans, emphasizing the importance of effective patient-provider communication for optimal plans.&#x0D; Conclusion: Effective communication and understanding of PD patients' and their family members' circumstances and emotional well-being contribute to informed care plans. PDNS play diverse roles in providing comprehensive patient and family support. They serve as primary contacts, walking alongside patients in their PD journey. It is vital for PDNS to cultivate a trusted relationship and receive ongoing support to enhance their skills. Government and charities hold critical roles in raising awareness and creating learning opportunities for PDNS and healthcare professionals. Research shows low shared decision-making in European PD care plans, leading to treatment inconsistencies. The European Union recognizes the importance of funding further research, stressing knowledge sharing for well-informed and standardized care plans, benefiting PD patients and families.

Provider cultural competence and humility in healthcare interactions with transgender and nonbinary young adults.

Transgender and nonbinary (TGNB) patients experience many barriers when seeking quality healthcare services, including ineffective communication and negative relationships with their providers as well as a lack of provider competence (including knowledge, training, and experience) and humility (engagement in the process of self-reflection and self-critique) in treating TGNB individuals. The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify factors associated with cultural competence and humility that facilitate and impede effective relationships between TGNB young adults and their healthcare providers. Data came from individual interviews with 60 young adults aged 18 to 24 from Florida who self-identified as transgender or nonbinary. We analyzed the data using inductive thematic approaches, and a feminist perspective, to identify themes associated with patient-provider relationships. We identified 4 themes related to patient-provider relationships: (1) Participants indicated effective patient-provider communication and relationships are facilitated by providers requesting and utilizing TGNB patients' correct names and personal pronouns. (2) Participant narratives conveyed their preferences that providers "follow their lead" in terms of how they described their own anatomy, reinforcing the utility of cultural humility as an approach for interactions with TGNB patients (3) Participants discussed the detrimental effects of TGNB patients having to educate their own providers about their identities and needs, suggesting clinicians' competence regarding gender diversity is paramount to fostering and maintaining patient comfort. (4) Finally, participants' responses indicated concerns regarding the confidentiality and privacy of the information they provided to their providers, suggesting a lack of trust detrimental to the process of building rapport between patients and their providers. Our findings indicate balancing the use of cultural humility and cultural competence during clinical encounters with TGNB young adults can enhance patients' experiences seeking healthcare. Nursing education is often devoid of focus on caring for transgender and nonbinary persons. Additional provider training and education on approaching clinical encounters with TGNB patients with cultural humility and competence should improve patient-provider communication and relationships, leading to a higher quality of patient care.

Supporting US healthcare providers for successful vaccine communication

BackgroundWhile many healthcare providers (HCPs) have navigated patients’ vaccine concerns and questions prior to the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccines, sentiments surrounding the COVID-19 vaccines have presented new and distinct challenges.ObjectiveTo understand the provider experience of counseling patients about COVID-19 vaccinations, aspects of the pandemic environment that impacted vaccine trust, and communication strategies providers found supportive of patient vaccine education.Methods7 focus groups of healthcare providers were conducted and recorded during December 2021 and January 2022, at the height of the Omicron wave in the United States. Recordings were transcribed, and iterative coding and analysis was applied.Results44 focus group participants representing 24 US states with the majority (80%) fully vaccinated at the time of data collection. Most participants were doctors (34%) or physician’s assistants and nurse practitioners (34%). The negative impact of COVID-19 misinformation on patient-provider communication at both intrapersonal and interpersonal levels as well as barriers and facilitators to patient vaccine uptake are reported. People or sources that play a role in health communication (“messengers”) and persuasive messages that impact behavior or attitudes towards vaccination (“messages”) are described. Providers expressed frustration in the need to continuously address vaccine misinformation in clinical appointments among patients who remained unvaccinated. Many providers found value in resources that provided up-to-date and evidence-based information as COVID-19 guidelines continued to change. Additionally, providers indicated that patient-facing materials designed to support vaccination education were not frequently available, but they were the most valuable to providers in a changing information environment.ConclusionsWhile vaccine decision-making is complex and hinges on diverse factors such as health care access (i.e., convenience, expense) and individual knowledge, providers can play a major role in navigating these factors with their patients. But to strengthen provider vaccine communication and promote vaccine uptake, a comprehensive communication infrastructure must be sustained to support the patient-provider dyad. The findings provide recommendations to maintain an environment that facilitates effective provider-patient communication at the community, organizational and policy levels. There is a need for a unified multisectoral response to reinforce the recommendations in patient settings.

Scoping Review of Challenges and Existing Tools

In light of the COVID-19 public health restrictions, the use of telemedicine has been on the rise. This care delivery model is valued for its potential to increase care access while providing safe care. However, it changes the way patients and providers interact. Communication during video consultations requires embodied engagement to compensate for the physical distance. This study aimed to identify patient-provider communication challenges during video consultations and assess the tools developed to support patient-provider communication according to the published literature from 2019 to 2022. Searches of eight databases (Medline (Ovid), PubMed, ProQuest Nursing and Allied Health, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus, PsychInfo, and Social Services Abstracts), and a Google search for grey literature were conducted. Nineteen articles met inclusion criteria. Findings show that patients and providers share the same concerns, such as a lack of trust relating to physical distance, the ability to establish a meaningful relationship, and a lack of confidence in clinical assessment. The available tools, however, are based on guidelines that are difficult to adapt to the diversity of interaction contexts. There is a need for tools that consider the complexity of patient-provider communication in order to address the challenges stemming from the lack of trust in the context of video consultations. These findings can inform strategies for effective patient-provider communication during video consultations to improve the quality of care and optimize outcomes in this context.

BARRIERS AND STRATEGIES TO ENGAGE AND RETAIN DIVERSE RURAL DYADS IN PSYCHOSOCIAL INTERVENTIONS

Abstract It is often challenging to engage and retain rural Latinx and Native Americans in psychosocial interventions after stroke, despite the fact that these populations tend to experience poorer health outcomes. Although strategies for effective patient-provider communication exist, few studies focus on the cultural aspects of engagement and retention of diverse dyads in a rural context. The aim of this study is to describe barriers to engagement and retention of diverse rural dyads in post-stroke psychosocial interventions, as well as to elucidate specific strategies to address these barriers. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with Nf14 clinical providers with extensive experience serving diverse rural couples and families. Qualitative data were analyzed using interpretive description methods. Seven key barriers were identified, grouped broadly into: 1. Those presented by providers (1a. Lack of time and attention given to dyads “telling their story”; 1b. Lack of culturally appropriate interpersonal skills; 1c. Incongruence between provider-patient values) and 2. Those existing within dyads themselves (2a. Low priority given to interpersonal and emotional issues; 2b. Concern about confidentiality in small communities and mistrust of those in power due to current or historical experiences with dominant cultures; 2c. Perception of stigma surrounding interpersonal and emotional issues; 2d. Tendency to be polite, accommodating, or feign investment). Providers offered specific culturally-informed strategies to overcome barriers which in turn may increase engagement and minimize attrition. Providers and researchers may benefit from these insights as they work to communicate with, build trust, and meet the unique needs of these populations.

Impact of an On-going Pandemic: Influence of Wearing a Mask on Therapist Communication

<h3>Research Objectives</h3> To investigate the impact of provider mask wearing on communication during wheelchair education. <h3>Design</h3> A voluntary survey designed by physical therapists and speech language pathologist to question perceived impact of mask wearing on communication and communication strategies. <h3>Setting</h3> Urban nonprofit rehabilitation hospital. <h3>Participants</h3> Sixty-six physical and occupational therapists from inpatient, outpatient, and day rehabilitation participated. <h3>Interventions</h3> Not Applicable. <h3>Main Outcome Measures</h3> Clinician perceived impact per survey response. <h3>Results</h3> Clinicians identified that mask wearing impacted communication at least some of the time as it relates to clarity (80.3%), efficiency (78%), and ability to establish rapport (60.6%). Clinicians reported a variety of strategies to limit communication breakdowns, at least some of the time repeating statements (84.8%), raising their voice (78.8%), increasing patient proximity (78.8%), using nonverbal cues (75.8%), conducting sessions in an alternative location (68.2%) using pictures or video supports (47.0%), and using written communication (40.9%). Clinicians would like further training in printed resources (68.2%), ways to integrate communication tools (51.5%), nonverbal communication techniques (31.8%), and vocal hygiene strategies (30.3%). <h3>Conclusions</h3> Results indicate clinicians used a variety of communication strategies to reduce communication breakdowns while wearing a mask. Clinicians reported their communication remained effective for wheelchair education activities, though multiple strategies were utilized to minimize the impact. Communicative Pathways Predicting Adherence in Type II Diabetic Patients: A Mediation Analysis

ABSTRACT Type II diabetes is a chronic health condition and its successful management requires effective patient-provider communication. Responding to a call to model pathways between provider communication and patient health outcomes, this study tested four models of type II diabetic patient adherence with four mediators. Given the complex nature of type II diabetic care, patient adherence was conceptualized as wellness, screening, medication, and treatment adherence. Mediators included patient understanding, agreement, trust, and motivation. A sample of U.S. patients with type II diabetes patients who were both under the care of a medical provider and taking medication for their type II diabetes completed online surveys (n = 793). Findings indicated that the relationships between patient-centered communication and adherence outcomes were mediated by proximal outcomes. The results contribute to the understanding of patient-centered communication, adherence behaviors, and proximal outcomes of patient understanding, agreement, trust, and motivation. Findings indicate that relationships between patient-centered communication and wellness adherence is mediated by patient motivation, patient-centered communication and screening adherence is mediated by patient agreement, trust, and motivation, and patient-centered communication and treatment adherence is mediated by patient agreement, trust, and motivation. The discussion addresses theoretical and practical implications and directions for future research.

The Impact of IT-Based Healthcare Communication on Mammography Screening Utilization among Women in the United States: National Health Interview Survey (2011-2018).

Effective patient–provider communication improves mammography utilization. Using information technology (IT) promotes health outcomes. However, there are disparities in access to IT that could contribute to disparities in mammography utilization. This study aims to assess the association between IT-based health care communication and mammography utilization and to evaluate if this effect is modified by race/ethnicity and age. To this end, this study was conducted using the National Health Interview Survey from 2011 to 2018. A total of 94,290 women aged 40 years and older were included. Multiple logistic regression models were used, and odds ratios were reported. The study found that all IT-based healthcare communication strategies were significantly associated with mammography utilization in all years from 2011 to 2018. In 2018, women who looked up health information on the internet, scheduled a medical appointment on the internet, and communicated with providers by email had a significantly higher chance to use mammography (p ≤ 0.005 for all strategies across all years). White women and women aged 50 years and older benefited the most from IT-based healthcare communication. In conclusion, facilitating access to IT may help increase mammography utilization, which may contribute to eliminating disparities in breast cancer mortality.

Gaps in the management of diabetes in Asia: A need for improved awareness and strategies in men's sexual health.

Sexual dysfunction, which is defined as 'difficulty during any stage of the sexual encounter that prevents or impairs the individual or couple from enjoying sexual activity', is globally prevalent in males with prediabetes and diabetes. It is an early harbinger of cardiovascular diseases and has a profound impact on one's physical, mental, and social health. Among patients with either prediabetes or diabetes, the most common male sexual dysfunctions are hypogonadism, erectile dysfunction, and premature ejaculation. In Asia, although sexual health is an important factor of men's health, it is rarely discussed freely in real-life practice. Addressing sexual health in Asian males has always been challenging with multiple barriers at the levels of patients and health care providers. Therefore, the assessment and management of sexual dysfunction in routine clinical practice should involve a holistic approach with effective patient-provider communication. In this review, we discuss the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and the management of hypogonadism, erectile dysfunction, and premature ejaculation among males with either prediabetes or diabetes (type 1 and type 2), as well as the evidence gaps across Asia.

“Do we even have a voice?” Health providers’ perspective on the patient accommodation strategies in Bangladesh

In a resource-constrained setting like Bangladesh, effective patient-provider communication is critical to the delivery of maternal healthcare services. Using communication accommodation theory, this study tried to understand how providers perceive, engage, and accommodate patients' needs in maternity wards. This qualitative exploratory study used a semi-structured interview guide to conduct in-depth face-to-face interviews of ten healthcare providers in two government-funded public health facilities in Bangladesh. The interview data were analyzed using MAXQDA 2020 software. The thematic analyses revealed that nurses and midwives faced conceivable neglect from patients and their attendees due to possible service and facility constraints, indicating their low status and control within the service operation. Despite efforts to address patients' emotional and psychological concerns, providers appear to avoid (divergence strategy) confronting patients and their irate visitors. Unimodal convergence emerged when providers accepted patients' arguments about the systematic inadequacy of service facilities. Providers have employed interpretability tactics to communicate medical opinions and applied nonverbal cues where necessary. A lack of open communication between healthcare providers and patients necessitated various forms of accommodation. Integrated strategies addressing service restrictions and initiatives fostering patient understanding and cooperation may improve patient-provider communication.
