Mental Health Symptom Reduction in US Adults Postincarceration

Purpose: The United States incarcerates a disproportionate number of individuals with mental health concerns, and social workers are the primary professionals interacting with this group as they reenter the community from prison. This prompts the need for effective behavioral health reentry interventions to support the transition from incarceration to community life. Method: This scoping literature review, conducted in November 2022, identified 1,072 publications, with 12 meeting full inclusion criteria. Results: The analysis underscores a prevalent emphasis in studies on incarcerated U.S. adults with mental health symptoms, particularly focusing on the impact of behavioral health interventions on recidivism rather than the reduction of mental health symptoms. Discussion: Notably, persistent knowledge gaps exist, including the absence of social work researchers and clinicians testing interventions for this population. The conclusion is a call to action, discussing implications for policy, research, and social work practice in addressing these challenges.

Examining associations between physical activity context and children meeting daily physical activity guidelines: the role of outdoor play, sports, and other organized activities

BackgroundLess than one-quarter of US children meet physical activity (PA) guidelines. Understanding the context in which PA occurs and how these contexts may play a role in meeting PA guidelines is an essential step toward developing effective behavioral interventions. The purpose of this study was to examine associations between PA context (sports participation, participation in other organized physical activities, active travel to school, and outdoor play) and the number of days children met PA guidelines in a representative sample of children living in Texas.MethodsWe analyzed cross-sectional data from a statewide sample of fourth-grade children in Texas who completed the 2019–2020 Texas School Physical Activity and Nutrition (Texas SPAN) survey. The Texas SPAN survey was designed to monitor the statewide prevalence of overweight/obesity among school children and assess habitual self-reported obesity-related behaviors, including diet and PA. Weighted Poisson regression models were employed to examine the associations between PA contexts (sports participation, participation in other organized physical activities, active travel to school, and outdoor play) and the number of days children met PA guidelines, adjusting for sex, race/ethnicity, overweight/obesity, urban–rural status, and economic disadvantage.ResultsA total of 16.7% of fourth-grade children met physical activity guidelines every day during the week (mean age = 9.4 ± 0.6 years; female = 48.7, 51.8% Hispanic, mean days meeting PA guideline = 3.6 ± 2.3 days). One in ten (11.2%) children did not meet daily PA guidelines on any day of the week, and 72.1% met them between 1 and 6 days. Participating in sports (b = 0.22, 95%CI:0.14, 0.30), any other organized physical activities (b=0.13, 95%CI:0.017, 0.19), and playing outdoors 1–3 days (b = 0.25, 95%CI:0.04, 0.46) and 4–7 days in the past week (b = 0.77, 95%CI:0.57, 0.97) was significantly and positively associated with the number of days children met PA guidelines.ConclusionParticipating in sports, participating in other organized physical activities, and playing outdoors may beneficially influence the number of days children meet PA guidelines. PA programs should consider these contextual factors and investigate how to promote organized activities and outdoor play effectively and appropriately among children.

Evaluating Effectiveness of Group Intervention Working on Executive Function for Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Prospective Observational Cohort Study

Introduction: The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of Simon says program (SSP), a strategy-based group intervention program working on executive function (EF) for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methods: A prospective observational cohort study was conducted from December 2021 to July 2022 recruiting 21 SSP participants, either they were on stimulant or not on stimulants, and 12 other ADHD patients who are on stimulant medication only without prior participation in SSP, using convenience sampling method, from Child Development Clinic Hospital Sultan Ismail. NICHQ Vanderbilt Assessment Follow Up Scales (VAS) were used to measure its effectiveness and the significance of score differences before and after SSP were assessed using paired sample t-test of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 28.0 software. Results: Total of 33 children participated in the study. From our study, only those participants on behavioural therapy alone showed statistically significant reduction in inattentive score, hyperactivity score and total symptoms score at the third month and sixth month after joining SSP from parents-rated VAS. There were no statistically significant differences in the average VAS performance score for both groups. Conclusion: SSP could be an effective behavioral intervention for children with ADHD children. Limitations included lacking clear generalizability due to the convenience sampling method and potential inter-rater variability.

Abstract P193: Sex Moderates Diet Quality Differences in Integrated Collaborative Care for Comorbid Obesity and Depression: Post-Hoc Analysis of the Research Aimed at Improving Both Mood and Weight Randomized Clinical Trial

Background: High-quality diets, such as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), are associated with lower risk for obesity and obesity-related chronic diseases. It is unclear whether diet quality improves aside from reduced calories in evidence-based behavioral weight loss interventions. Objective: Leveraging data from the Research Aimed at Improving Both Mood and Weight (RAINBOW) randomized trial, the objective of this post hoc analysis is to investigate (1) whether the study intervention was associated with improved diet quality in adults with comorbid obesity and depression, compared to usual care; and (2) whether the associations were modified by sex. Methods: Participants completed 24-hour dietary recalls at baseline, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. Dietary outcomes included the DASH score as the composite measure of diet quality and its components. Between-group differences in dietary outcomes were examined among 409 participants and by sex, using repeated-measures mixed-effects linear models. Results: Changes in DASH scores did not differ between the intervention and usual care control groups through 24 months in both women and men. Compared with controls, men in the intervention group had significantly decreased nut, seed, and legume intake at 6 (mean difference, -1.1; 95% CI, -1.9, -0.3 servings/day; P=0.01) and 12 months (-1.0; -2.0, -0.0 servings/day; P=0.048). Compared with controls, women in the intervention group had significantly decreased fruit and vegetable intake at 18 (-1.8; -2.9, -0.6 servings/day; P=0.002) and 24 months (-1.1; -2.2, -0.1 servings/day; P=0.03), and whole grain intake at 24 months (-0.5; -0.9, -0.1 servings/day; P=0.03), but increased percent calories from fat at 24 months (3.6; 0.6, 6.5; P=0.02). Conclusions: Diet quality not only did not improve in an effective behavioral weight loss intervention but deteriorated in women, in particular. These post-hoc findings warrant confirmation and may suggest that behavior change techniques targeting diet quality that are tailored to women and men need to be an explicit focus of behavioral weight loss interventions aside from caloric reductions.

A review of the impact of decision heuristics on calorie underestimation and the implications for unhealthy eating

PurposeThe global rise in obesity can be closely linked to excessive calorie consumption and misperceptions regarding food intake. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to review the existing literature to have a better understanding how heuristic cues – mental shortcuts used for decision-making – impact calorie underestimation and consequently lead to unhealthy eating habits.Design/methodology/approachA search was conducted across multiple databases with priority given to studies in developed countries that provided insights into the cognitive processes behind food choices, the application of specific heuristics, and the association with eating behaviours. Articles were also selected based on their methodological quality.FindingsThe main findings are that the dichotomous categorization of foods as healthy or unhealthy can result in underestimating the calorie content in those foods perceived as healthy. Although nutrition claims, health claims and campaigns help in the fight against obesity, there is also the risk that consumers’ reliance on heuristic-based decision-making could aggravate the problem because a misinterpretation or misrepresentation could lead to calorie underestimation and overeating.Practical implicationsTo establish effective behavioural interventions for obesity prevalence -, it is critical for interventions and policies to understand how consumers perceive calorie content and how they interpret claims on food marketing or packaging. Recognizing and addressing these heuristic-driven biases and understanding the factors influencing food choices are crucial for encouraging healthier eating habits.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is the only review to date that consolidates research on the topic, drawing from multiple disciplines.

Frequent Use of Contingency Management and Opioid Treatment Programs that Provide Treatment for More than Only Opioid Use Disorder

Contingency management is an effective behavioral intervention for treating substance use disorders that provides patients with incentives for objective verification of completed targeted recovery behaviors including abstinence from substances, attending treatment, and medication adherence. Accredited/licensed opioid treatment programs provide effective, medications for opioid use disorder. This study evaluated the prevalence of frequent contingency management use among a national sample of opioid treatment programs in the U.S. ( N = 672). A binary logistic regression model examined factors associated with providing contingency management, including state-level fatal overdoses, number of pharmacotherapies, outpatient treatment, facility ownership, and residential treatment. Most evaluated facilities provided contingency management ( n = 440; 65.5%). Facilities that prescribed more pharmacotherapies, were located in states with high drug overdose death rates, and for-profit (compared to nonprofit) providers were more likely to offer contingency management. Because contingency management effectively treats substance use disorders, contingency management should be offered more broadly across opioid treatment programs.

Intensive Voice Treatment following Botulinum Neurotoxin Injection for a Speaker with Abductor Laryngeal Dystonia: An Exploratory Case Study.

Abductor laryngeal dystonia (ABLD) is a rare neurological voice disorder which results in sporadic opening of the vocal folds during speech. Etiology is unknown, and to date there is no identified effective behavioral treatment for it. It is hypothesized that LSVT LOUD®, which was developed to treat dysphonia secondary to Parkinson's disease, may have application to speakers with ABLD to improve outcomes beyond that with botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) treatment alone. The participant received one injection of BoNT in each vocal fold 2 to 3 months prior to initiating intensive voice therapy via teletherapy. Objective measures of vocal loudness (dB sound pressure level), maximum phonation time, and high/low pitch frequency (Hz) were recorded in all treatment sessions and follow-up sessions. Over the course of treatment, the participant showed steady gains in phonation time, volume, pitch range, and vocal quality with a substantial reduction in aphonic voice breaks by the end of the treatment program. Perceptual symptoms of ABLD were nearly undetectable by the participant and the clinicians up to 12 months posttreatment, with no additional BoNT injections. The results suggest that LSVT LOUD® following BoNT was effective, with long-lasting improvement in vocal function, for this speaker with ABLD.

Alcohol Use Disorder Treatment: Problems and Solutions.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) afflicts over 29 million individuals and causes more than 140,000 deaths annually in the United States. A heuristic framework for AUD includes a three-stage cycle-binge/intoxication, withdrawal/negative affect, and preoccupation/anticipation-that provides a starting point for exploring the heterogeneity of AUD with regard to treatment. Effective behavioral health treatments and US Food and Drug Administration-approved medications are available but greatly underutilized, creating a major treatment gap. This review outlines challenges that face the alcohol field in closing this treatment gap and offers solutions, including broadening end points for the approval of medications for the treatment of AUD; increasing the uptake of screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment; addressing stigma; implementing a heuristic definition of recovery; engaging early treatment; and educating health-care professionals and the public about challenges that are associated with alcohol misuse. Additionally, this review focuses on broadening potential targets for the development of medications for AUD by utilizing the three-stage heuristic model of addiction that outlines domains of dysfunction in AUD and the mediating neurobiology of AUD.

Behavioral Interventions to Improve Sleep Outcomes in Individuals With Multiple Sclerosis: A Systematic Review.

Sleep disturbances are common in individuals with multiple sclerosis. The objective of this systematic review was to determine effective behavioral interventions to improve their sleep. Literature searches were performed in December 2021 in Ovid MEDLINE, Elsevier Embase, and Web of Science, along with hand searching for grey literature and cited references. Four reviewers independently reviewed titles and abstracts (2 reviewers for each article; n = 830) and the full-text articles (n = 81). Consensus for inclusion was achieved by a fifth reviewer. Thirty-seven articles were eligible for inclusion. Four reviewers extracted relevant data from each study (2 reviewers for each article) using a standard data extraction table. Consensus was achieved for completeness and accuracy of the data extraction table by a fifth reviewer. The same 4 reviewers conducted a quality appraisal of each article to assess the risk of bias and quality of the articles, and consensus was achieved by a fifth reviewer as needed. Descriptive data were used for types of interventions, sleep outcomes, results, and key components across interventions. Overall, the cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, cognitive behavioral therapy/psychotherapy, and education/self-management support interventions reported positive improvements in sleep outcomes. Quality appraisal scores ranged from low to high, indicating potential for bias. Variability in the intervention type, intervention dose, outcomes used, training/expertise of interventionist, specific sample, and study quality made it difficult to compare and synthesize results. Further research is necessary to demonstrate the efficacy of most of the interventions.

Understanding Medication Nonadherence in Crohn's Disease Patients: A Qualitative Evaluation.

Immune-modifying medications are widely available and recognized as valuable by most gastroenterologists. However, approximately 40% of patients with Crohn's disease (CD) do not comply with regimens using these medications, resulting in complications, hospitalization, and surgeries. We sought to identify factors that motivate adherence or nonadherence with medication recommendations for CD. We conducted qualitative interviews with patients living with CD who were identified as adherent or nonadherent to immune-modifying medication recommendations by their treating gastroenterologist. Semistructured interview guides were developed based on an established framework for understanding health behaviors. We conducted content analysis of the resulting qualitative data using an inductive-deductive approach to identify emergent themes that influence medication decision-making. Twenty-five patients with CD completed interviews for this study. Interviews were independently coded and analyzed for thematic content. Two broad domains emerged comprising (1) themes reflected in the Theoretical Domains Framework and (2) novel themes specific to medication decision-making in CD. Adherent patients conveyed a sense of trust in science and healthcare provider expertise, while nonadherent patients were more likely to express beliefs in their ability to self-manage CD, concern about risks associated with medication, and a general ambivalence to treatment. There are clear cognitive, behavioral, and relational factors that guide patients' medication-related decision-making. Several of the factors share features of other behavioral change and decision-making processes, while others are specific to the experience of patients with CD. A fuller understanding of these factors is essential to developing effective behavioral interventions to improve adherence to evidence-based treatment recommendations.

Functional analysis and treatment of adult problem behavior: A review

AbstractFunctional analysis (FA) methodology has been deemed the best practice in the field of applied behavior analysis. The data collected in an FA allows behavior analysts to develop the most effective and ethical behavior interventions. With the diagnosis for individuals with autism on the rise along with the forecast of adults who will need support, it may be time to take stock of the available literature. The purpose of this review was to evaluate the behavior analytic research over the last 25 years (1997–2022) on FA and treatment for adults who engage in severe problem behavior. Utilizing specific inclusion and exclusion criteria resulted in the identification of 28 articles. These articles were examined across participant characteristics, target behavior, FA type, FA settings, interventions, generalization, and maintenance. Implications on adult FA and treatment are discussed along with recommendations for practitioners who desire to support this population.

Secure Messaging Intervention in Patients Starting New Antidepressant to Promote Adherence: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

There are a range of effective pharmacological and behavioral treatments for depression. However, approximately one-third of patients discontinue antidepressants within the first month of treatment and 44% discontinue them by the third month of treatment. The major reasons reported for discontinuation were side effect burden, patients experiencing that the medications were not working, and patients wanting to resolve their depression without using medication. This study tested the acceptability, feasibility, and preliminary effectiveness of an SMS messaging intervention designed to improve antidepressant adherence and depression outcomes in veterans. The intervention specifically targeted the key reasons for antidepressant discontinuation. For example, the secure message included reminders that it can take up to 6 weeks for an antidepressant to work, or prompts to call their provider should the side effect burden become significant. This pilot was a 3-armed randomized controlled trial of 53 veterans undergoing depression treatment at the Iowa City Veterans Affairs Health Care System. Veterans starting a new antidepressant were randomized to secure messaging only (SM-Only), secure messaging with coaching (SM+Coach), or attention control (AC) groups. The intervention lasted 12 weeks with follow-up assessments of key outcomes at 6 and 12-weeks. This included a measure of antidepressant adherence, depressive symptom severity, and side effect burden. The 2 active interventions (SM-Only and SM+Coach) demonstrated small to moderate effect sizes (ESs) in improving antidepressant adherence and reducing side effect burden. They did not appear to reduce the depressive symptom burden any more than in the AC arm. Veteran participants in the SM arms demonstrated improved medication adherence from baseline to 12 weeks on the Medication Adherence Rating Scale compared with those in the AC arm, who had a decline in adherence (SM-Only: ES=0.09; P=.19; SM+Coach: ES=0.85; P=.002). Depression scores on the 9-Item Patient Health Questionnaire decreased for all 3 treatment arms, although the decline was slightly larger for the SM-Only (ES=0.32) and the SM+Coach (ES=0.24) arms when compared with the AC arm. The 2 intervention arms indicated a decrease in side effects on the Frequency, Intensity, and Burden of Side Effects Ratings, whereas the side effect burden for the AC arm increased. These differences indicated moderate ES (SM-Only vs AC: ES=0.40; P=.07; SM+Coach: ES=0.54; P=.07). A secure messaging program targeting specific reasons for antidepressant discontinuation had small-to-moderate ES in improving medication adherence. Consistent with prior research, the intervention that included brief synchronic meetings with a coach appeared to have a greater benefit than the SMS-alone intervention. Veterans consistently engaged with the SMS messaging in both treatment arms throughout the study period. They additionally provided feedback on which texts were most helpful, tending to prefer messages providing overall encouragement rather than specific wellness recommendations. Sleep Treatment Education Program for Young Adult Cancer Survivors (STEP-YA): Protocol for an Efficacy Trial.

Young adult cancer survivors (YACS) are at elevated risk for chronic insomnia, even years after completing treatment. In addition to potential health consequences, insomnia can interrupt social, educational, and vocational development just as they are trying to "make up" for time lost to cancer. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBTI) is recommended as first-line treatment for insomnia but remains largely unavailable to YACS due to several barriers (ie, shortage of trained providers, geographic limitations, financial limitations). Traditional CBTI has not been adapted to meet YACS' unique developmental and circadian challenges. To improve availability of effective behavioral insomnia treatment for this population, we developed the Sleep Treatment Education Program for Young Adult Cancer Survivors (STEP-YA), a low-intensity educational intervention delivered virtually online. In this phase 2 "proof of concept" trial, primary aims are to test the efficacy of STEP-YA to improve insomnia symptoms and mood in YACS and assess the utility of individualized coaching to improve treatment effects. A secondary aim will explore participant variables associated with clinically significant response to STEP-YA. This 2-arm randomized prospective trial will enroll 74 off-treatment YACS aged 20 years to 39 years with clinically significant insomnia. Each participant completes the STEP-YA intervention in a 1-on-1 synchronous online session led by a trained interventionist following a structured outline. The 90-minute intervention presents educational information on the development of insomnia after cancer and offers specific suggestions for improving insomnia symptoms. During the session, participants review the suggestions and develop a personalized sleep action plan for implementing them. After the session, participants are randomized to either the coaching condition, in which they receive 2 telephone coaching sessions, or the no-coaching condition, which offers no subsequent coaching. The Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and the Profile of Mood States: Short Form (POMS-SF) are assessed at baseline and 4 and 8 weeks postintervention. Enrollment began in November 2022, with 28 participants currently enrolled. We anticipate recruitment will be completed in 2024. The primary endpoint is a change in ISI score from baseline to 8 weeks postintervention. The secondary endpoint is change in mood symptoms (POMS-SF) from baseline to 8 weeks postintervention. Change scores will be treated as continuous variables. Primary analyses will use ANOVA methods. A within-subjects analysis will examine if the STEP-YA intervention is associated with significant changes in insomnia and mood over time. A 2-way ANOVA will be used to evaluate the utility of coaching sessions to improve treatment effects. Chronic insomnia has significant negative effects on YACS' medical, educational, and psychological functioning. STEP-YA aims to address their needs; study results will determine if the intervention warrants future effectiveness and dissemination studies and if individualized coaching is necessary for adequate treatment response. A new planetary affective science framework for eco-emotions: Findings on eco-anger, eco-grief, and eco-anxiety

Emotions play a critical role in human health and behavior yet have largely been overlooked in the context of the global environmental crisis (GEC). Despite recent emphasis on climate anxiety and eco-anxiety, there is a lack of psychometric or dimensional measures assessing the fuller range of GEC-associated emotions, especially beyond Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic (WEIRD) contexts. Further conceptual gaps hinder structured inquiry and generalizability. This exploratory study applies a new planetary affective science framework to holistically and systematically address these issues. We used a circumplex model to map core affect and structured interviews with 15 Turkish environmentalists to explore the range of eco-emotions. Our findings suggest the prevalence of eco-anger and eco-grief over the eco-anxiety most often assessed in WEIRD contexts. Similar findings in post-disaster situations underscore participants’ heightened vulnerability to cumulative stressors and the dangers of emotion-specific omissions (e.g., anger) in assessment tools. We identified environmental justice, developing country tension, self-efficacy dimensions, and responsibility attributions to the Turkish government and Global North as key contextual factors in these differentiated eco-emotional patterns. Findings constitute the first step toward more holistic, diverse, and conceptually rigorous eco-emotions research, urgently needed for more effective pro-environmental health and behavioral interventions amidst the intensifying GEC.

The Headache Psychologists’ Role in Pediatric and Adult Headache Care: A Qualitative Study of Expert Practitioners

ObjectiveWe examined the perspectives of expert headache psychologists to inform best practices for integrating headache psychologists into the care of children and adults with headache disorders within medical settings.BackgroundHeadache disorders are prevalent, chronic, and disabling neurological conditions. As clinical providers trained in evidence-based behavior change interventions with expertise in headache disorders, headache psychologists are uniquely positioned to provide behavioral headache treatment.MethodsIn 2020, we conducted semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of expert headache psychologists working across the United States. Open–ended questions focused on their roles, clinical flow, and treatment content. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, de-identified, and analyzed using a rapid qualitative analysis method.ResultsWe interviewed seven expert headache psychologists who have worked for an average of 18 years in outpatient settings with pediatric (n = 4) and adult (n = 3) patients with headache. The themes that emerged across the clinical workflow related to key components of behavioral headache treatment, effective behavioral treatment referral practices, and barriers to patient engagement. The expert headache psychologists offered evidence-based behavioral headache interventions such as biofeedback, relaxation training, and cognitive behavioral therapy emphasizing lifestyle modification as standalone options or concurrently with pharmacological treatment and were of brief duration. Participants reported many of their patients appeared reluctant to seek behavioral treatment for headache. Participants believed referrals were most effective when the referring provider explained to the patient the rationale for behavioral treatment, treatment content, and positive impact on headache activity, functioning, and quality of life. Barriers cited by participants to integrating headache psychology into headache care included the paucity of psychologists with specialized headache training, lack of insurance reimbursement, limited patient time to seek behavioral treatment, and inadequate patient knowledge of what behavioral treatment entails.ConclusionHeadache psychologists are often core members of multidisciplinary headache teams offering short-term, evidence-based behavioral interventions, both as a standalone treatment or in conjunction with pharmacotherapy. However, barriers to care persist.Enhancing referring providers’ familiarity with psychologists’ role in headache care may aid successful referrals for behavioral interventions for headache.

In-person versus online delivery of a behavioral sleep intervention (Sleeping Sound©) for children with ADHD: protocol for a parallel-group, non-inferiority, randomized controlled trial

BackgroundChildren with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often experience sleep difficulties such as difficulty initiating and maintaining sleep. Problem sleep may impact children’s daily functioning and behaviors and exacerbate ADHD symptoms. Most effective behavioral interventions to improve sleep are conducted in person, limiting accessibility to treatment for individuals in remote or rural communities or those who are unable to attend a clinic. This trial aims to assess the efficacy of delivering an established behavioral intervention online, Sleeping Sound with ADHD©, compared to a face-to-face delivery mode.MethodsThis parallel group, non-inferiority, randomized controlled trial (RCT) will include at least 68 children, aged 5–12 years old with ADHD. Families of children will be recruited from private developmental and psychological clinics and social media, within the state of Western Australia (WA). Once written informed consent and baseline questionnaires are completed, families are randomized to receive the behavioral intervention either in-person or online via Telehealth services. The intervention targets the assessment and management of reported sleep problems, through two individual consultations and a follow-up phone call with a trained clinician. The sleep outcomes assessed consist of a parent-reported sleep questionnaire and actigraphy.DiscussionTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first RCT to investigate sleep treatment modality for children with ADHD. If effective, clinicians can provide an evidence-based sleep intervention in an accessible manner.Trial registrationANZCTR, ACTRN12621001681842. Modeling behavioral factors influencing farmers' willingness to adopt rooftop solar photovoltaic: Empirical evidence from rural China

Rooftop photovoltaic technology represents a sustainable and ecologically sound approach, capable of optimizing solar energy utilization, thereby addressing various concerns including carbon emissions reduction and environmental preservation. Although the government is encouraging and supporting farmers to install rooftop photovoltaic systems, their inclination to adopt the technology is low. To assist policymakers in developing effective behavioral intervention measures, this study aims to enhance the framework of the theory of planned behavior by incorporating three new factors: farmers' own power, authority power, and face consciousness. This will enable better exploration of new areas and improve the theory's applicability. Using structural equation modeling and data from 1243 farmer questionnaires from eight Chinese provinces, an empirical study of the factors influencing the willingness to implement rooftop photovoltaic is conducted in rural China. The results show that farmers' own power (β = 0.543) is the key driver of farmers' adoption of rooftop photovoltaic technology, followed by authority power (β = 0.322) and PV cognition (β = 0.271). Face consciousness (β = 0.184) and environmental concerns (β = 0.130) have less impact on farmers' willingness to adopt rooftop photovoltaic. This study offers a novel perspective on rural renewable energy adoption behavior and provides policymakers with theoretical support and empirical evidence for designing programs to promote renewable energy technologies.

Professional development on the basics of behavior assessment and intervention: training by school district staff for district staff

Research shows that schools struggle with conducting high quality functional behavior assessments (FBA) and implementing effective behavior intervention plans (BIP). Access to training is a documented challenge to effective implementation. One training with preliminary empirical support is Basic FBA. This pilot study extended the research on Basic FBA to determine whether the intervention could be implemented effectively by district staff. Fourteen staff working in an urban school district completed within-district training consisting of four modules on FBA/BIP with aligned between-session assignments; half were randomly assigned to receive coaching support. Participants increased their knowledge and skill in FBA/BIP and rated the training as socially acceptable. Differences in outcomes for coached and control groups were minimal, with some higher social validity ratings and more FBA/BIPS developed by those receiving coaching.

Effects of Resistance Training Intensity on Arterial Stiffness in Healthy Adults

PURPOSE: Resistance exercise is an effective behavioral intervention for improving skeletal muscle mass and strength, and preventing sarcopenia. However, the effects of resistance exercise on arterial stiffness remain controversial. This study aimed to organize and analyze the effects of resistance training intensity on arterial stiffness in healthy adults without overt clinical disease.METHODS: A thorough literature search was conducted to retrieve original research articles between 2000 and 2023 using the PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases.RESULTS: Long-term low-intensity resistance training (RT) was deemed a safe exercise intervention that can maintain or decrease arterial stiffness and increase muscle strength. Moreover, moderate-intensity RT was effective in improving muscle strength and hypertrophy but did not reduce arterial stiffness. High-intensity RT was an excellent intervention for enhancing muscle strength. However, a potential risk of increasing both central and peripheral artery stiffness in young adults was present.CONCLUSIONS: Compared to low-intensity RT, moderate-to-high-intensity RT was more effective in improving muscle strength and hypertrophy, but may increase arterial stiffness.
