The effect of therapeutic massage on patients with obesity: A systematic review and meta-analysis

BackgroundObesity is related to various diseases such as endocrine metabolism and cardiovascular diseases. We provide an evidence-based evaluation for the effect of massage on patients with obesity. MethodsRelevant literature published in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and other databases were searched until October 2023. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.4. A p value less than 0.05 indicates a statistically significant difference. ResultsTwelve studies were finally included. Compared with conventional therapy, massage therapy were more effective, mainly in terms of (1) weight [mean difference (MD) = -3.71, 95%CI = −6.51,-0.88]; (2) body mass index (BMI), [MD = −2.00, 95%CI = −3.38, −0.62]; (3) Waist circumference (WC), [MD = −6.24, 95%CI = −8.71, −3.77]; (4) total cholesterol (TC), [MD = −0.65, 95%CI = −1.08, −0.22]; (5) triglycerides (TG), [MD = −0.92, 95%CI = −1.37, −0.47]. ConclusionMassage therapy may be more effective for patients with obesity than conventional treatment. Given the number of studies and potential heterogeneity, more high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm our conclusions.

Comparative Effects of Therapeutic Massage and Acupressure on Neck Pain

Depending on the cause, neck pain can persist anywhere from a few days to several years; Osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, ruptured disc, pinched nerves, emotional and physical stress, strain, bad posture, tumor, and other disorders are among the most common causes acupressure on local and distal acupuncture sites may provide drowsiness and relaxation, which may help to relieve chronic neck discomfort. Objective: To compare the effects of therapeutic massage and acupressure on neck pain. Methods: ISRA University Hospital Karachi conducted a randomized clinical trial. A total of n=30 individuals were between the ages of 20 and 35, with neck discomfort ranging from 3-6 on the VAS scale. The n=30 participants were separated into two groups: therapeutic massage (n=14) and acupressure (n=15). The data was analyzed using the SPSS version 22.0. Results: Mean age of study participants was 24.34± 4.3 years. A total of n=12 were female, and the remaining n=18 were male. The analysis showed that pain and neck disability significantly improved in both groups (p<0.05). When compared in both groups, the intensity of pain was not significantly different in both groups, but neck disability was significantly improved in the acupressure group as compared to the massage group after six weeks of intervention. Conclusion: The study concluded that both techniques benefit neck pain and disability and found significant results. But results show that acupressure was found to be more beneficial and significant than the therapeutic massage.

Effectiveness of massage therapy in reducing back pain in older adults

Background: Lower back pain is one of the most common complaints in the elderly. Pain symptoms can be chronic and aggravated by comorbidities. Back pain leads to reduced function, difficulty performing activities of daily living, and prevents physical activity. Massage is one of the more commonly used forms of physiotherapy for these complaints. Aim of the study: The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of therapeutic massage for spinal pain in older adults. Material and methods: Twenty-three participants, including 18 females and 5 males aged 61–85 years old, participated in the study. All patients had degenerative lesions of the spine that were diagnosed by their primary care physician. Patients received classical therapeutic back massages for a period of 3 weeks at a frequency of 2 times a week. Each treatment session was 40-minute-long. Analysis of pain was performed before and immediately after therapy to assess changes in pain. The McGill (short form) and the WHOQL-BREF questionnaires were used to assess the level and quality of life of the study participants. Pain intensity was assessed using the visual analog scale (VAS). Results: There was a reduction in pain intensity (VAS) and pain perception after massage therapy, with changes in the sensory and emotional components of the pain score. The changes were statistically significant. Quality of life measured by the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire was at a good level. Elderly participants rated social relationships the highest and physical components the lowest. Conclusions: Massage therapy resulted in a reduction of spinal pain in older adults. Massage is an effective form of therapy for reducing back pain in older adults.

Immediate Effects of Prophylactic Therapeutic Massage on Pain Tolerance and Threshold

Introduction: This study is meant to determine the immediate effects of therapeutic massage on pain tolerance and threshold.
 
 Methods: Fourteen subjects were recruited from a sample of convenience. Subjects were randomized to have either the massage or no-massage protocol on their initial visit with the remaining protocol on their following visit. All subjects completed two sessions with the pain-eliciting test, one with the massage protocol and one with the no-massage protocol.
 
 Results: All 14 subjects achieved a higher pain tolerance during the massage protocol compared to their own no-massage protocol. The pain tolerance difference between protocols was calculated by a paired T-Test (p value 0.0003) to be a significant difference. No significant difference was found for pain threshold between protocols.
 
 Discussion: It appears that therapeutic massage does have a likelihood of increasing pain tolerance when subjects are submitted to a painful stimulus immediately post-massage. This study validates the use of therapeutic massage as an adjunct treatment to improve pain tolerance before a potentially painful procedure.
 
 Conclusion: Prophylactic massage was shown to allow healthy participants to achieve a higher pain tolerance when subjected to a pain-eliciting test immediately after the massage was received.

The effectiveness of therapeutic massage in neck pain – prospective, preliminary studies

Objective. Assessment of the efficacy of classic (Swedish) therapeutical massage in pain of cervical spine. <br>Materials & methods. 25 people with pain of cervical spine treated with massage were evaluated. NDI and selfconstructed questionnaires were used. Patients were examined before and after therapy. Results were statistically analyzed. <br>Results. Before the massage 48% of the subjects felt moderate pain, after it 60% felt very little pain. The massage was effective in all categories of NDI, it was not significant only in category: lifting. The efficacy of the massage in men and w o m e n w e r e c o m p a r a b l e i n 8 categories. It was higher in women in categories: reading and headache. Age had no impact on efficacy of the massage in every category. <br>Conclusion. After massage the intensity of pain and the disabilities of functioning of cervical spine were reduced. Sex and age were not differentiating factors of the efficacy of the massage.

Therapeutic effect of massage and electro-acupuncture combined with Yaobi-Zhuyu-Zhitong decoction on lumbar intervertebral disc herniation with qi stagnation and blood stasis type

Objective To explore the efficacy of electroacupuncture and massage combined with Yaobi-Zhuyu-Zhitong decoction in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation (LDH). Methods A total of 100 LDH patients with qi stagnation and blood stasis type who met the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into two groups, 50 in each group. The control group was treated with Yaobi-Zhuyu-Zhitong decoction, and the observation group was treated with electroacupuncture and massage on the basis of the control group. Both groups were treated for 4 weeks. The VAS scale was used to evaluate the degree of pain. The Japanese Orthopedic Association Scores (JOA) was used to evaluate the efficacy of low back pain. The Oswestry dysfunction index was used to evaluate the recovery of lumbar function, and the improvement of daily activities of patients after treatment was evaluated. Results After treatment, the VAS score of the observation group was significantly lower than that of the control group, and the JOA score was significantly higher than that of the control group (t value were 9.870, 8.214, P<0.01). The excellent and good rates of Oswestry dysfunction index before and after treatment in the observation group were 34.0% (17/50) and 86.0% (43/50), respectively, and the control group was 24.0% (12/50) and 44.0% (22/50), respectively. The excellent rate of Oswestry dysfunction index in the two groups was significantly higher than that in the same group before treatment (χ2 values were 28.167, 4.456, P<0.01), and the observation group was significantly higher than the control group (χ2=19.385, P<0.001). The scores of daily activities such as walking, weight-bearing, sitting for a long time, bending over, washing, standing, sleeping and turning over in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group (t values were 3.689, 1.661, 3.621, 3.621, 3.300, 1.661, 1.461 respectively, all Ps<0.05). The total effective rate was 94.0% (47/50) and the control group was 76.0% (38/50). The difference between the two groups was statistically significant (χ2=6.353, P=0.012). Conclusions Electroacupuncture and massage combined with Yaobi-Zhuyu-Zhitong decoction can improve the lumbar function, reduce the degree of lumbar pain, improve the quality of life of the LDH patients with qi stagnation and blood stasis type. Is Massage Therapy in Acute Cases Always Contraindicated?

Massage therapy always known to be beneficial in chronic muscle injury leading to adhesions. Therapeutic effect of massage helps in releasing tension, eliminates pain and allow normal range and movement of the part thereby improves blood circulation. Massage therapy following an injury is contraindicated. But can it be indicated in some muscle injuries? Can massage following a particular injury brings immediate effect? Have we misjudged and ignored the effectiveness of massage in mild acute cases?

High Tone Power therapy in the treatment of pain in the cervical spine

Aim of the study: The purpose of this study was to analyse therapeutic effects of massage using the High Tone Power Therapy for pain relief in the cervical spine. Materials and methods: The study included a group of 40 patients aged from 34 to 55 years. All of them had received medical treatment of massage using the High Tone Power Therapy. During their therapy each patient was treated 6 times for 30 minutes. Treatments were twice a week. 100% of the examined persons completed their therapy. Everyone examined had their range of spine motion measured before and after the therapy, and they were asked to assess the intensity of their pain. Results: The application of the High Tone Power massage proved to be a very effective treatment which improved the extent of cervical spine mobility in a significant way. On examination in every possible movement an increased extent of mobility was observed. A significant alleviation of spinal pain was noticed by the remaining 32 participants. 25% of all patients were totally free of headache, and the rest felt a considerable pain relief, from 6.57 points to 4 points. Dizziness disappeared in the case of 30% of the examined patients. The therapy did not make any improvement 8 of the patients examined. Conclusions: High Tone Power massage treatment improved the range of spineal motion as well as the analgesic activity at the majority of examined patients. The presented report should be treated as a preliminary test, requiring further studies in a larger number of patients using a comparative group.

Effect of Therapeutic Massage in Cancer Patient: Suffering

People with oncological disease demonstrate, in addition to the side effects of the treatments, the future uncertainties and suffering, having this pathology an impact on self-image, in interpersonal relationships, the meanings and ways of life. We design the quasi-experimental study with the aim to evaluate the effect of the massage therapy on a sample of 31 suffering cancer patients, 16 of the experimental group and the control group 15. For the operationalization of the independent variable a protocol of massage therapy advocated by Tiffany Field was used and Hernandez-Reif uses the inventory of subjective Experiences suffering in illness (IESSD). The massage therapy was proved beneficial on psychological dimension (p p = 0.001), existential (p p = 0.005) and suffering (p < 0.001). Our purpose with this study is not only that health professionals use this intervention, and that these results encourage the scientific community, in carrying out future research in this pathology and other chronic diseases.

Therapeutic effects of massage and electrotherapy on muscle tone, stiffness and muscle contraction following gastrocnemius muscle fatigue

[Purpose] This study aimed to examine the effects of a combined intervention consisting of massage therapy and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on gastrocnemius muscle fatigue, assessing whether the intervention improved muscle tone, stiffness, and muscle contraction. [Subjects and Methods] The subjects were 20 healthy males in their 20s who were equally divided into a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation group and a combined therapy group that received a combination of massage therapy and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Muscle fatigue was triggered on the gastrocnemius muscle, and the effects of intervention method on muscle tone, stiffness, and muscle contraction were examined over time. [Results] Lateral and medial gastrocnemius muscle tone and stiffness significantly increased and gastrocnemius muscle contraction significantly decreased in each group immediately after fatigue was triggered on the gastrocnemius muscle. There was no difference in the effects of the two intervention methods over time. [Conclusion] This study verified that a combined therapy of massage therapy and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation was able to be used effectively in improving muscle tone, stiffness, muscle contraction, thereby reducing gastrocnemius muscle fatigue.

Effect of therapeutic massage on pain in patients with dementia.

Introduction The aim was to investigate whether therapeutic massage was effective in relieving pain in elderly residents with dementia. Methods A randomized controlled study was conducted in an aged care facility. Ten participants with dementia or advanced dementia were allocated to an intervention group or a control group. The intervention group received 10 min of massage (effleurage, kneading, and trigger point therapy) four times per week for 4 weeks. The Pain Assessment in Advanced Dementia scale was used as the outcome measure. Results No significant changes in mean outcome measure scores were found post intervention (Intervention mean = 5.0 ± 3.49; Control mean = 5.2 ± 3.49: t(8) = 0.09, p = 0.93). However, the Intervention Group had a greater magnitude of change (1.200 ± 1.78) when compared to the control group (0.800 ± 2.16). Conclusion Therapeutic massage may provide a useful adjunct to the current pain management plan of patients with dementia.

The effectiveness of therapeutic massage in lumbar and cervical spine pain syndrome – case study

Background: The spine pain syndrome is a common problem in a substantial part of the population which currently affects younger and younger people. The underlying risk factors include the character of work, sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical activity. Except for complex physiotherapy which should be applied during treatment, a lifestyle prophylaxis also seems to be a key factor. Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to present the possibility to use the classical and therapeutic massage of the back, and a lymphatic drainage of lower limbs in case of the lumbar and cervical spine pain syndrome accompaniedby the lower limb swelling. Material and methods: A young woman with the lumbar and cervical spine pain syndrome received a 55-minute lymphatic drainage (four sessions), a 30-minute classical massage (four sessions) and a 45-minute therapeutic massage (two sessions). All the procedures were performed every two days. Results: After the application of all kinds of the massage, selected individually to current symptoms and needs of the patient, the pain in the area of the spine was relieved. After the therapy the pressure pain in the back muscles such as: latissimus dorsi (lats), trapezius (traps) and spinal erectors was also decreased. The swelling in the area of the lower limb was reduced and the patient reported general decrease of pain. Conclusions: A massage may constitute an effective anti-pain therapy in case of the lumbar and cervical spine pain syndrome. Combined with educating patients about proper motor habits might prevent similar pain symptoms in the future.

The effectiveness of therapeutic massage in carpal tunnel syndrome

Background: The carpal tunnel syndrome is a neuralgia of the median nerve of the hand caused by permanent pressure which results in sensation and motion disturbances in the area. Principal symptoms include pain in the hand and wrist, numbness and tingling of the fingers, sensation dysfunctions, and finally, the limitation of mobility and manual flexibility of the hand. The discomfort leads to a significant decrease in the patient’s quality of life. In case of carpal tunnel syndrome surgical and non-surgical treatments with selected elements of physiotherapy are applied. Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to present and evaluate possible methods of treatment such as massage therapy and lymphatic drainage as the form of post-surgery treat-ment in carpal tunnel syndrome.Material and methods: The young woman with the carpal tunnel syndrome after the surgical treatment received 50-minute lymphatic drainage (three sessions) and 30-minute therapeutic massage (four sessions). The procedures were performed every two days.Results: After the application of both kinds of massage in appropriate sequence, the following changes have been notified. The swelling in the area of the hand was reduced and the patient reported definite decrease of pain.Conclusions: The massage might be one of the forms of therapy used after surgical treatment in carpal tunnel syndrome, especially when the symptoms occur. It is also often effective with other components of physiotherapy as non-surgical treatment.

The effectiveness of therapeutic massage in lumbar spine pain syndrome

Introduction: The chronic lumbar spine pain is one of the most common disorders reported by patients at family doctor’s visits. The symptoms associated with the problem usually include limited mobility of the trunk and the dysfunctions of peripheral nerves manifested by numbness, tingling and hyperesthesia. The pain potentiates the muscle tension which, secondarily, evokes general fatigue and the overexploitation of the tissues and, in consequence, the pain becomes even more intensive and unbearable. The treatment of the dysfunction differentiates two methods, namely, the conservative and the surgical one. The latter requires farther treatment in forms of the rehabilitation and physiotherapy which include various kinds of massage, selected physical procedures and physical exercises. Material and methods: The purpose of the study is to present some selected classical and therapeutic forms of massage of the back, arms and legs in women with the pain in the lower part of the spine. The procedures aim at the reduction of the symptoms through restoring the muscle tension and increasing the blood flow in the affected area. In the research eight 45-minute-long massage sessions were performed, each every three days. Results: After the therapy the decrease of pain in the shoulder girdle and lumbar spine area as well as the improvement in the patient’s posture were noticed. After the massage, when the pain was less disturbing the woman took up some exercises for seniors in the fitness centre and nordic walking.Conclusions: The massage is one on the forms of therapy, which can be used in chronic lumbar spine pain. It is often the only possible form of therapy, but can also be a part of more complex physiotherapy combined with other therapeutic treatments.

The Effects of Therapeutic Massage on the Range of Motion of Knee Joints among Patients with Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a serious health problem in Thailand. The therapeutic massage is an alternative medicine to increase range of motion of knee joints. This study aimed to examine the effects of therapeutic massage on the range of motion of knee joints among patients with osteoarthritis. The samples were 32 osteoarthritis patients seeking treatment at Khlung Hospital. The samples were purposively selected and given therapeutic massage for three weeks. The study tools used are: 1) questionnaire which consists of two parts: demographic characteristics and a form for range movement of knee joint record; and 2) goniometer where range movements of knee joint before and after receiving therapeutic massage were compared by Paired t-test. The results revealed that after receiving therapeutic massage, average scores of range movement of knee flexion and extension were significantly higher than that before receiving therapeutic massage(t = 7.759 p <.05, t = 7.744 pp <.05 respectively). The findings showed that the therapeutic massage could increase the range movement of knee joints. Therefore, therapeutic massage should be promoted as a complementary medicine among osteoarthritis patients. Effects of therapeutic massage on gait and pain after delayed onset muscle soreness.

Unfamiliar or sudden exercise can induce delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) within 12–24 h. So, several researchers have reported various interventions to treat DOMS. Massage is generally known to eliminate muscle fatigue. However, effect of massage after DOMS is still not clear. We investigated whether the massage is effective on pain and gait after DOMS. The participants were divided into a control group (n= 10) with DOMS and an experimental group (n= 11) with the massage treated after DOMS. We induced DOMS by taking isotonic exercise with going up and down 20 times in 5-story building. We applied the massage and assessment on gastrocnemius of dominant foot. The change of gait and pain was assessed using gaitrite and algometer. In the present results, the massage on gastrocnemius after DOMS showed significant difference in pain (P< 0.05). Also, there was a significant difference in gait (P< 0.05), especially, spatial parameters (distance, step length, stride length) and temporal parameters (ambulation, heel on off time, stride velocity). Moreover, the pain relief after massage-treated in DOMS correlated with gait. These results suggest that the massage on gastrocnemius after DOMS has influence on pain and gait performance. Therefore, massage can be applied as intervention for delayed onset muscle soreness.
