Effect of surface pretreatment on the polypyrrole coating of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. Part A: Synthesis and characterization

This paper investigates the synergistic effects of a two-step surface modification approach on acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastics. The first step involves a mechanical grinding pretreatment followed by chemical etching in sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide, which increases surface roughness and enhances the wettability of the ABS surface. The second step focuses on the chemical synthesis of polypyrrole (PPy) on the pretreated ABS, demonstrating improvements in PPy surface roughness and adhesion after grinding and chemical etching. Adhesion tests reveal a significant increase from 0 % (PPy on untreated ABS) to 66 % (PPy on the grounded ABS) and ultimately to 100 % (PPy on the grounded ABS after chemical etching). This research is dedicated to a comprehensive exploration of the fundamental mechanisms, substantiated by a rigorous analysis involving X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) examination, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and contact angle measurements. Furthermore, the electric conductivity of PPy coatings is enhanced through electrochemical doping of PPy using dodecyl sulfate anions (DS/PPy/ABS) and the incorporation of silver particles (Ag/PPy/ABS). Raman spectroscopy demonstrates the Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) effect of silver particles on PPy coatings, showcasing their interaction. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirms the enhanced crystallinity of DS/PPy/ABS, aligning with increased conductivity after electrochemical doping with DS anions.

Effect of surface pretreatment on the production of LDH for post-treatment with benzoxazine resin

In the present study, the surface of AZ31 Mg alloy was pretreated by etching in nitric acid and plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). Then Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (Mg-Al/LDH) was synthesized on the pretreated surface of substrates via hydrothermal treatment to increase the corrosion resistance. The effect of surface pretreatment (etched substrate and PEO layer) on LDH formation, structure, and corrosion resistance was investigated. Benzoxazine resin (thermosets), has been used for coatings, however, the high curing temperature limits their applications. For this purpose, a new bio-based benzoxazine resin with a lower curing temperature (160 °C) was developed to be applicable for Mg alloys. Phenol (Phloretic acid), diol (Dodecandiol), and amine (monoethanolamine) were used to synthesize innovative benzoxazine with exchangeable ester functions and self-healing ability. This resin was further used for post-treatment of LDH samples. The morphology, chemical composition, and crystalline structure of LDH samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The corrosion resistance of the coatings was investigated by salt spray test as well as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The LDH layer on the etched substrates showed better corrosion resistance than the LDH on PEO layer due to having a thicker inner layer (11.8 ± 0.2 μm and 7.0 ± 0.6 μm for LDH on the etched substrate and PEO layer, respectively). Post-treatment of samples with benzoxazine resin showed the effective capability of this polymeric coating for enhancing the corrosion resistance of Mg alloy substrate. This benzoxazine coating increased the corrosion resistance of the coating/substrate system around 104 times in comparison to the bare substrate. Moreover, it was observed that the LDH layer can increase the adhesion and compatibility of the substrate with benzoxazine resin. These results were confirmed by EIS and cross-cut adhesion tests experimentally as well as theoretical calculations of the adsorption energy of benzoxazine molecule to the LDH layer using Density Functional Theory (DFT).

Effect of surface modification of Fe/g-C3N4 catalyst on the product distribution in CO hydrogenation

Carbon nitride (g-C3N4) prepared using thermal condensation of urea was pretreated by H2O2/NH3·H2O and used as support to obtain Fe/g-C3N4 catalyst via impregnation method. The catalytic performance of the catalysts both before and after modification was investigated in CO hydrogenation. Combining detailed characterizations, such as XRD, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, TG, CO2-TPD, CO-TPD, H2-TPR, contact angle measurement, and N2 physical adsorption and desorption, we investigated the effects of surface pretreatment on the texture properties of Fe/g-C3N4 catalysts and the product distribution of CO hydrogenation. The results demonstrate that various pretreatment techniques have significant influences on the textural properties and catalytic performance of the catalysts. The prepared g-C3N4 with a typical honeycomb structure has strong interaction with highly dispersed Fe. Both before and after modification, the materials are hydrophilic, and the hydrophilicity is increased after treatment with H2O2 and NH3·H2O. Treatment with H2O2 enhances surface hydroxyl groups. NH3·H2O treatment improves surface amino groups, promotes CO adsorption, and facilitates the formation of Fe(NCN) phase. The surface basicity of all pretreated catalysts is enhanced. The water gas shift (WGS) reaction activity of the two-step modified catalyst Fe/AM-g-C3N4 was lower, and the CO2 selectivity in CO hydrogenation was reduced to 11.61%. Due to the enhanced basicity of Fe/AM-g-C3N4, the secondary hydrogenation ability of olefins was inhibited to obtain higher olefin selectivity with C= 2–C= 4 of 32.37% and an O/P value of 3.23.

Effect of Surface Pretreatment to Reduce the Incubation Period of Iridium Thin Films Grown by ALD on the Oxide Surface

Iridium (Ir) has low figure of merit(×λ) and high melting temperature properties, so it has been recently spotlighted as a very important copper (Cu) alternative interconnect material in next-generation semiconductor devices. In particular, in the case of depositing a thin film using atomic layer deposition (ALD) technology, it can be expected to deposit extremely thin film with conformal, uniform and excellent step coverage characteristics even in a very complex structure or a trench structure of several nm dimension due to the inherent self-limiting characteristic of ALD. In this regard, ALD-Ir is considered as one of the most suitable metallization process for the application of advanced semiconductor interconnects. Therefore, considerable efforts have been conducted to develop a reliable ALD-Ir process having improved film qualities. And, ALD-Ir process with excellent thin film properties such as low electrical resistivity and negligible oxygen impurities was recently reported using Tricarbonyl (1,2,3-η)-1,2,3-tri(tert-butyl)-cyclopropenyl iridium (C18H27IrO3 or TICP) precursor and oxygen [1]. However, in the case of this TICP precursor, it was difficult to deposit extremely thin and continuous Ir films on the hydroxyl-terminated oxide layer due to its long incubation delay.Therefore, in this study, a method for depositing a very thin, uniform and continuous ALD-Ir thin film with low resistivity even on oxide materials was explored by reducing the incubation period and promoting nucleation using various surface pretreatment conditions. In addition, the nucleation behavior as well as film properties of ALD-Ir on the oxide material were systemically compared and analyzed according to the surface pretreatment conditions, and finally, ALD-Ir thin film with excellent properties on the oxide surface was obtained.

Boron-doped {113}, {115} and {118}-oriented single-crystal diamond electrodes: Effect of surface pre-treatment

In this study, the effect of vicinal crystal orientation ({113}, {115}, and {118}), boron doping level, and surface termination induced by various pre-treatments on electrical and electrochemical properties of single crystal boron-doped diamond (SC-BDD) electrodes was carefully investigated. van de Pauw measurements confirmed Hall concentration to increase with increasing vicinal angle, {118} < {115} < {113}. As-deposited H-terminated surfaces were converted to predominantly O-terminated surfaces (confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) using hot acid, ozone and anodic pre-treatments, or by spontaneous oxidation in air. This conversion was recognized by inhibited heterogeneous electron transfer kinetics of inner-sphere redox markers ([Fe(CN)6]3−/4− and dopamine), by an increase in double layer capacitance and charge transfer resistance values. The most pronounced surface oxidation was recognized for electrodes with the lowest boron content as a result of blocked boron atoms by oxygen functionalities and loss of superficial hydrogen on the surface. Reverse conversion from oxidized to H-terminated surfaces using cathodic pre-treatment led mainly to restoration of electrochemical parameters. Moreover, spontaneous oxidation of electrode surfaces in ambient atmosphere was confirmed, with the fastest being within the first five days. The results show the key role of boron content, and hence the crystal orientation and superficial hydrogen in affecting conductivity and performance of SC-BDD electrodes, which is demonstrated by changes in heterogenous electron transfer kinetics of surface sensitive redox systems.

Hydrogen permeability of 48Cu52Pd cold-rolled alloy foil and different methods of its surface pretreatment

The process of atomic hydrogen penetration into the metal phase is complicated by the phase-boundary transition from the liquid and/or gas phase. That is why the cleanliness of metal and alloy surfaces is of particular importance. The purpose of this work was to determine the effect of surface pretreatment using photon pulses, ultrasound, and potential cycling on the parameters of hydrogen permeability for 48Cu52Pd metal cold-rolled membranes. The study was focused on a foil of copper-palladium homogeneous alloy with 48 at. % Cu and 52 at. % Pd composition. The studied samples were obtained by cold rolling and their thickness were 10 and 16 μm. Surface pretreatment included rinsing in acetone, using ultrasound, pulsed photon treatment, and quadruple potential cycling over a wide range of potentials. Electrochemical studies included cyclic voltammetry and cathode-anodic chronoamperometry in a deaerated 0.1 M H2SO4 solution. Hydrogen permeability was calculated using mathematical models for samples of finite and semi-infinite thickness. It was found that the surface treatment of a 48Cu52Pd foil with photon pulses leads to both an increase in the ionisation rate of atomic hydrogen and an increase in the roughness of the foil surface. The diffusion coefficient of atomic hydrogen does not depend on the method of surface pretreatment with ultrasound and photon pulses. The extraction rate constant for the extraction of the atomic hydrogen after photon treatment increases, which facilitates the processes of both H introduction and ionisation due to the release of active centres of the surface. Electrochemical cleaning of the surface during the quadruple potential cycling contributes to the growth of the extraction rate constant for the extraction of atomic hydrogen

Effect of pretreatment of root dentin surface with cold atmospheric plasma on improving the bond strength of fiber post and resin cement: In vitro study.

Achieving stable adhesion between fiber post and interradicular dentin is a challenging process in the restoration of endodontically treated teeth. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of surface pretreatment with cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) on improving the bond strength between them. Forty-eightsingle-canal mandibular premolars were cut 1 mm above the cementoenamel junctionto keep the root length of 14 mm or more. After endodontic treatment and preparation of the post space, the teeth were divided into four groups regarding the pretreatment of dentin surfaces, including normal saline, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), CAP, and CAP + EDTA groups. The data were analyzed using paired and independent t-test and one-way analysis of varianceand the significance level was set at p < .05. The bond strength was significantly higher in the coronal third than in the apical third in all the groups. Moreover, the bond strength was significantly higher in the CAP + EDTA-treated group. The bond strength increased significantly in the CAP group compared to the normal saline group. In addition, the bond strength increased significantly in the CAP or EDTA groups compared to the control group. The lowest bond strength belonged to the control group (normal saline). The surface pretreatment with CAP (alone or in combination with EDTA) played a significant role in improving the bond strength of fiber post and root canal dentin.

Effects of Surface Pretreatments on Bond Strength and Morphology of Aprismatic Enamel.

To evaluate the effect of different pretreatment protocols and adhesives on the shear bond strength and surface morphology of aprismatic enamel. Human maxillary incisors (N = 120) were assigned to five different groups according to pretreatment: 1) no treatment; 2) glycine; 3) sodium bicarbonate; 4) Al2O3 and 5) extra-fine bur. Then the teeth were divided into three subgroups, according to the adhesive applied: 3-step etch-and-rinse (ER), universal adhesive in ER mode, and universal adhesive in self-etch (SE) mode. Shear bond strength (SBS) testing was performed with a universal testing machine. For SEM observation, fifteen human molars were collected and analyzed after pretreatment with/without etching with 37% H3PO4 for 30s. Al2O3 showed higher SBS than all other groups considered. Comparable SBS values were obtained for other pretreatments. Universal adhesive in E&R mode performed better than did 3-step E&R and universal adhesive in SE mode. SEM images showed visible differences in enamel surface roughness. Airborne-particle abrasion with Al2O3 followed by etching with H3PO4 increased SBS on aprismatic enamel. The combination of airborne-particle abrasion with alumina powder followed by 15 s of H3PO4 etching and application of a universal adhesive in E&R mode proved to be the most effective adhesive protocol.

Effect of Surface Pre-Treatment on the Adhesion between HiPIMS Thick Cu:CuCNx Coating and WC-Co Shim

High-power impulse magnetron-sputtering thick metal/carbon–nitride-doped metal-matrix multilayer nano-composite coating can be applied to cutting-tool holder components to improve cutting insert’s life. One of the challenges of such an add-on solution is the poor adhesion between the thick coating and the hard alloy substrate, such as WC-Co shim. This work presents a study on WC-Co substrate surface preparation methods for HiPIMS coating and its adhesion improvement. Three mechanical surface pretreatment methods were investigated: machining (grinding), diamond polishing, and grit blasting. White-light interferometry was used for substrate surface texture measurement before and after pretreatment. It was demonstrated that, compared to machining and diamond polishing, grit blasting can significantly improve the interface adhesion between the ~200 µm-thick Cu:CuCNx coating and WC-Co shim. Grit blasting was also found to be beneficial for improving the cutting insert’s life in the external turning process. In turning tests, the coating lifetime for grit-blasted shim was more than 90 min, whereas the coating lifetimes for machined shim (conventional shim) and diamond-polished shim were ~85 min and ~70 min, respectively. Further, by comparing the HiPIMS gradient chromium pre-layer between the coating and substrate for the different shims, the study also explained that the quasi-isotropic surface texture of grit-blasted shim is more advantageous for coating–substrate interface adhesion.

Combined effect of surface pretreatment and nanomaterial reinforcement on the adhesion strength of aluminium joints

Nowadays, it is known that adhesive and cohesive forces should be developed in order to improve the mechanical performance of adhesive joints. In this context, while the adhesive forces are improved with surface pretreatments applied to the adherends, the adhesive and cohesive forces are improved with the nanomaterial reinforcement to the adhesive. For this purpose, in this study, AA7075-T6 aluminium alloy adherends were combined with epoxy adhesive as a single lap joint. As a preliminary study, abrading and FPL-etching (Forest Products Laboratory) surface pretreatments were applied to aluminium alloy adherends and after two different surface pretreatments, the changing surface morphology (with optical microscope, contact angle, profilometer measurements) and shear strength were compared. With abrading and FPL-etching surface pretreatments, an increase of 40.83% and 69.63%, respectively, was determined in the shear strength compared to untreated adhesive joints. After the preliminary study, in order to increase the mechanical performance of the adhesive joints, nano sized ANP (alumina nanopowder), MWCNT (multiwalled carbon nanotubes) and SNP (silica nanopowder) were added to the adhesive. Thus, it was investigated how the combined effect of different surface pretreatments and nanomaterial types at various reinforcement ratios changed the shear strength of the adhesive joints. After shear tests, significant increase in shear strength was observed in FPL-etched adhesive joints compared to abraded adhesive joints in all reinforcement nanomaterial types and reinforcement ratios. And also, significant improvements in the shear strength of adhesive joints were determined in all types of nanomaterial reinforcements. The highest shear strength was obtained at 10.0 wt % SNP reinforcement with 104.32% improvement in FPL-etched adhesive joints compared to nonreinforced FPL-etched adhesive joints. The evaluation of shear strength was supported by the failure images taken from the fracture surfaces after shear tests, and it was determined that the failure type was changed from adhesive to cohesive with nanomaterial reinforcement compared to nonreinforced adhesive joints.

Effect of surface pretreatment and artificial aging on the retention of lithium disilicate crowns cemented to zirconia implant abutments

Statement of problemRecent advancements in restorative dentistry have seen an increase in the use of ceramic restorations and zirconia implant abutments. However, how the pretreatment of a zirconia abutment and different artificial aging protocols affect the bond strength of a cemented, monolithic lithium disilicate crown is unclear. PurposeThe purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of surface pretreatment on the retentive strength of milled lithium disilicate crowns bonded to custom zirconia implant abutments with different resin cements after thermocycling and long-term aging. Material and methodsA total of 144 crowns (n=8) were milled and bonded to 144 abutments. In the experimental groups, 72 abutments were airborne-particle abraded with 50-μm aluminum oxide before bonding. All specimens were stored at 37 °C in 100% humidity for 24 hours. Forty-eight specimens were subjected to thermocycling, and another 48 were subjected to aging for 6 months. Retentive strength was measured by using a pull-off test with a universal testing machine. Retentive strength values were calculated and compared with 3-way analysis of variance and a Tukey-Kramer post hoc test (α=.05). ResultsIn the 24-hour aging group, retention for all experimental groups was significantly higher (P<.05) than for the control group, except for Panavia 21 with Clearfil Ceramic Primer. In the thermocycling and long-term aging groups, all cements in the experimental group displayed significantly higher retention than the control. The airborne-particle abrasion of custom zirconia implant abutments with 50-μm aluminum oxide before bonding to lithium disilicate crowns significantly increased the bond strength of the Multilink Hybrid Abutment with Monobond Plus and RelyX Ultimate with Scotchbond Universal cements after 24-hour aging, but not of Panavia 21 with Clearfil Ceramic Primer. ConclusionsAirborne-particle abrasion significantly increased the bond strength of all 3 cements after thermocycling and long-term aging.

The Effect of Surface Pretreatment of Aluminum Alloy 7075-T6 on the Subsequent Inhibition by Cerium(III) Acetate in Chloride-Containing Solution

The study aimed to investigate the effect of surface pretreatment on the corrosion protection of aluminum alloy 7075-T6 in sodium chloride solution using cerium acetate as a corrosion inhibitor. Different surface pretreatments were tested: (i) mechanical grinding, (ii) mechanical grinding and non-water diamond polishing, (iii) mechanical grinding, alkaline etching with NaOH and acid desmutting, and (iv) mechanical grinding, alkaline cleaning with a commercial SurTec cleaner and acid desmutting. Topography, composition, and morphology of inhibited surface during immersion were investigated using optical microscopy, 3-D profilometry, scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. The corrosion properties were determined by potentiodynamic measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in sodium chloride solution without and with the addition of cerium acetate. A change in the composition and morphology of the inhibited surface was noticed as a function of surface pretreatment and immersion time. Appropriate surface treatment resulted in improved protection against localized corrosion even after long-term immersion up to 1 month. Among mechanical pretreatments, polishing gave better results than grinding. Among chemical pretreatments, alkaline cleaning in SurTec/HNO3 was more appropriate as a preceding step to acid desmutting than alkaline etching with NaOH.

Surface Pretreatments of AA5083 Aluminum Alloy with Enhanced Corrosion Protection for Cerium-Based Conversion Coatings Application: Combined Experimental and Computational Analysis.

The effects of surface pretreatments on the cerium-based conversion coating applied on an AA5083 aluminum alloy were investigated using a combination of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), polarization testing, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Two steps of pretreatments containing acidic or alkaline solutions were applied to the surface to study the effects of surface pretreatments. Among the pretreated samples, the sample prepared by the pretreatment of the alkaline solution then acid washing presented higher corrosion protection (~3 orders of magnitude higher than the sample without pretreatment). This pretreatment provided a more active surface for the deposition of the cerium layer and provided a more suitable substrate for film formation, and made a more uniform film. The surface morphology of samples confirmed that the best surface coverage was presented by alkaline solution then acid washing pretreatment. The presence of cerium in the (EDS) analysis demonstrated that pretreatment with the alkaline solution then acid washing resulted in a higher deposition of the cerium layer on the aluminum surface. After selecting the best surface pretreatment, various deposition times of cerium baths were investigated. The best deposition time was achieved at 10 min, and after this critical time, a cracked film formed on the surface that could not be protective. The corrosion resistance of cerium-based conversion coatings obtained by electrochemical tests were used for training three computational techniques (artificial neural network (ANN), adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), and support vector machine regression (SVMR)) based on Pretreatment-1 (acidic or alkaline cleaning: pH (1)), Pretreatment-2 (acidic or alkaline cleaning: pH (2)), and deposition time in the cerium bath as an input. Various statistical criteria showed that the ANFIS model (R2 = 0.99, MSE = 48.83, and MAE = 3.49) could forecast the corrosion behavior of a cerium-based conversion coating more accurately than other models. Finally, due to the robust performance of ANFIS in modeling, the effect of each parameter was studied.

A Combined Experimental and Computational Approach to Study Crevice Corrosion of Stainless Steels

In the present work, a dual experimental and computational technique is used to study crevice corrosion of ferritic stainless steels in chloride-containing media. A specifically designed three-electrode set-up is developed to monitor current and potential during the incubation, initiation and propagation stages. At the same time, a 3D finite element model is implemented to examine the galvanic coupling prevailing in the experimental set-up and to provide a mechanistic interpretation of the obtained results. The asymptotic current and potential measured at the end of the experiments are thought to be more realistic indicators of crevice corrosion kinetics than the commonly used depassivation pH. The technique also allows highlighting several physicochemical effects including chloride concentration, pH, temperature as well as the effect of surface pretreatment. Finally, an in-depth examination of the simulated current and potential distributions inside the crevice reveals that any extension of the propagation outside the confined geometry will report the ohmic drop out of the crevice, which radically impacts the initiation and propagation modes.

Effects of Surface Pretreatment of Titanium Substrates on Properties of Electrophoretically Deposited Biopolymer Chitosan/Eudragit E 100 Coatings

The preparation of the metal surface before coating application is fundamental in determining the properties of the coatings, particularly the roughness, adhesion, and corrosion resistance. In this work, chitosan/Eudragit E 100 (chit/EE100) were fabricated by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) and both their microstructure and properties were investigated. The present research is aimed at characterizing the effects of the surface pretreatment of titanium substrate, applied deposition voltage, and time on physical, mechanical, and electrochemical properties of coatings. The coating’s microstructure, topography, thickness, wettability, adhesion, and corrosion behavior were examined. The applied process parameters influenced the morphology of the coatings, which affected their properties. Coatings with the best properties, i.e., uniformity, proper thickness and roughness, hydrophilicity, highest adhesion to the substrate, and corrosion resistance, were obtained after deposition of chit/EE100 coating on nanotubular oxide layers produced by previous electrochemical oxidation.

A Study on the Effects of Surface Energy and Topography on the Adhesive Bonding of Aluminum Alloy

The bonding properties of adhesives are mainly affected by surface roughness, topography and chemical adsorption. In this paper, we studied the effects of surface pretreatment of Al 2024-T3 (bare) in terms of surface roughness, topography and surface free energy. Surface pre-treatment included solvent cleaning, FPL etching, PAA and CAA treatment. The surface energy and roughness of the aluminum surface were significantly increased by the anodizing treatment. Single lap shear and fatigue tests were performed to investigate bonding properties and durability. The evaluation revealed that the surface energy and surface roughness resulting from the aluminum surface treatment had a significant impact on bonding properties and durability. PAA treated surfaces had the highest bonding strength, and CAA treated surfaces had superior bonding retention performance in hot water or salt spray environments. The results of the fatigue test most clearly demonstrated how the surface pretreatment of the aluminum alloy differently affected bonding performance.
