The safety and feasibility of transcranial direct current stimulation for patients with chronic severe traumatic brain injury in Japan, a phase I study

BackgroundDespite evidence regarding the benefits of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in patients with severe traumatic brain injury, few trials have examined the treatment safety. Therefore, we created a phase I trial in Japan to investigate the safety of tDCS after severe brain injury. MethodsWe verified the safety of tDCS through constant left frontal anodal stimulation at 2 mA for 20 min for 5 consecutive days. Additionally, we added a variable stimuli period to explore the effects of stimulus intensity, location, and duration. We adapted a traditional 3 + 3 study design. We assessed the rate of adverse effects, including skin burns and clinical seizure. Changes in neurological symptoms were evaluated using the Glasgow Coma Scale, Coma Recovery Scale-Revised, and 4 states of consciousness (coma, unresponsive wakefulness syndrome, minimally conscious state, and severe disability). ResultsSix patients completed the study. No obvious adverse events were observed during the constant stimulation period or the variable stimulation period (right frontal anodal stimulation, stimulation frequency 2–4 mA, 1 or 5 times per week for a period of 4 weeks). Regarding the Coma Recovery Scale-Revised, patients in 4 out of 6 instances (66.7 %) improved by more than 1 point. ConclusionOur phase I safety study indicated that a single course of tDCS was safe in patients with severe traumatic brain injury. The next step is a phase II trial to investigate the preliminary efficacy and safety of tDCS at 2 mA (in comparison with sham stimulation).

Effects of pupil size as manipulated through ipRGC activation on visual processing

The size of the eyes’ pupils determines how much light enters the eye and also how well this light is focused. Through this route, pupil size shapes the earliest stages of visual processing. Yet causal effects of pupil size on vision are poorly understood and rarely studied. Here we introduce a new way to manipulate pupil size, which relies on activation of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) to induce sustained pupil constriction. We report the effects of both experimentally induced and spontaneous changes in pupil size on visual processing as measured through EEG. We compare these to the effects of stimulus intensity and covert visual attention, because previous studies have shown that these factors all have comparable effects on some common measures of early visual processing, such as detection performance and steady-state visual evoked potentials; yet it is still unclear whether these are superficial similarities, or rather whether they reflect similar underlying processes. Using a mix of neural-network decoding, ERP analyses, and time-frequency analyses, we find that induced pupil size, spontaneous pupil size, stimulus intensity, and covert visual attention all affect EEG responses, mainly over occipital and parietal electrodes, but—crucially—that they do so in qualitatively different ways. Induced and spontaneous pupil-size changes mainly modulate activity patterns (but not overall power or intertrial coherence) in the high-frequency beta range; this may reflect an effect of pupil size on oculomotor activity and/ or visual processing. In addition, spontaneous (but not induced) pupil size tends to correlate positively with intertrial coherence in the alpha band; this may reflect a non-causal relationship, mediated by arousal. Taken together, our findings suggest that pupil size has qualitatively different effects on visual processing from stimulus intensity and covert visual attention. This shows that pupil size as manipulated through ipRGC activation strongly affects visual processing, and provides concrete starting points for further study of this important yet understudied earliest stage of visual processing.

Stimulus intensity modulates perceived tactile distance.

Several features of tactile stimuli modulate the perceived distance between touches. In particular, distances are perceived as farther apart when the time interval between them is longer, than when it is shorter. Such effects have been interpreted as a form of 'psychological relativity', analogous to Einstein's conception of a four-dimensional space-time. We investigated whether similar effects occur for stimulus features other than time, specifically stimulus intensity. We hypothesised that perceived distance would be increased when the two stimuli differed in intensity, since they would then be farther apart in a multi-dimensional feature space. Participants made verbal estimates of the perceived distance between two touches on their left hand. Intensity was manipulated such that both stimuli could be intense, both could be light, or one could be intense and the other light. We found no evidence for change in perceived tactile distance when stimuli intensity mis-matched. In contrast, there were clear effects of average stimulus intensity on perceived distance. Intense stimuli were judged as farther apart than light stimuli, and mixed stimuli were intermediate. These results are consistent with theories of general magnitude representation, which argue that multiple dimensions of magnitude are dependent on a shared underlying representation of domain-general magnitude.

The sensory and affective components of pain differentially shape pupillary dilatation during cold pressor tests

Nociceptive and affective stimuli increase reflex sympathetic outflow to the pupils. To investigate effects of stimulus intensity, unpleasantness and distress on these pupillary reflexes, and to assess their stability, healthy participants immersed their hand in ice-water three times (for 20, 40 and 60s; or 60, 40 and 20s; or three times for 60s) (N=21 in each condition). Each ice-water immersion was preceded by a 90s warm water immersion. To evaluate phasic sympathetic influences on pupil diameter, pupillary re-dilatation after 1s of bright light was assessed during the last 10s of each immersion. By-and-large, pain ratings and pupil diameter were greater during longer than shorter ice-water immersions, and ice-water immersions facilitated pupillary re-dilatation after the flash stimulus. However, mean pupil diameter during ice- and warm water immersions, minor ipsilateral amplification of the pupillary response, and ratings of pain unpleasantness and distress decreased across the experiment. Together, these findings suggest that nociceptive input increased sympathetic pupillary tone and amplified phasic increases in sympathetic activity after exposure to light. However, tonic sympathetic influences on pupil diameter and lateralization decreased across repeated immersions, possibly as novel or threatening aspects of the experience declined. Pupillary nociceptive and affective reflexes involve the locus coeruleus, an integral component of neural circuits that heighten cortical arousal and regulate pain. As these reflexes appear to reflect different aspects of sensory and affective processing, their combined assessment might increase the sensitivity and specificity of tests of locus coeruleus function in patients with suspected deficits.

Evolving changes in cortical and subcortical excitability during movement preparation: A study of brain potentials and eye-blink reflexes during loud acoustic stimulation.

During preparation for action, the presentation of loud acoustic stimuli (LAS) can trigger movements at very short latencies in a phenomenon called the StartReact effect. It was initially proposed that a special, separate subcortical mechanism that bypasses slower cortical areas could be involved. We sought to examine the evidence for a separate mechanism against the alternative that responses to LAS can be explained by a combination of stimulus intensity effects and preparatory states. To investigate whether cortically mediated preparatory processes are involved in mediating reactions to LAS, we used an auditory reaction task where we manipulated the preparation level within each trial by altering the conditional probability of the imperative stimulus. We contrasted responses to non-intense tones and LAS and examined whether cortical activation and subcortical excitability and motor responses were influenced by preparation levels. Increases in preparation levels were marked by gradual reductions in reaction time (RT) coupled with increases in cortical activation and subcortical excitability - at both condition and trial levels. Interestingly, changes in cortical activation influenced motor and auditory but not visual areas - highlighting the widespread yet selective nature of preparation. RTs were shorter to LAS than tones, but the overall pattern of preparation level effects was the same for both stimuli. Collectively, the results demonstrate that LAS responses are indeed shaped by cortically mediated preparatory processes. The concurrent changes observed in brain and behavior with increasing preparation reinforce the notion that preparation is marked by evolving brain states which shape the motor system for action.

Audiovisual integration of the dynamic hand-held tool at different stimulus intensities in aging.

Introduction: In comparison to the audiovisual integration of younger adults, the same process appears more complex and unstable in older adults. Previous research has found that stimulus intensity is one of the most important factors influencing audiovisual integration. Methods: The present study compared differences in audiovisual integration between older and younger adults using dynamic hand-held tool stimuli, such as holding a hammer hitting the floor. Meanwhile, the effects of stimulus intensity on audiovisual integration were compared. The intensity of the visual and auditory stimuli was regulated by modulating the contrast level and sound pressure level. Results: Behavioral results showed that both older and younger adults responded faster and with higher hit rates to audiovisual stimuli than to visual and auditory stimuli. Further results of event-related potentials (ERPs) revealed that during the early stage of 60-100 ms, in the low-intensity condition, audiovisual integration of the anterior brain region was greater in older adults than in younger adults; however, in the high-intensity condition, audiovisual integration of the right hemisphere region was greater in younger adults than in older adults. Moreover, audiovisual integration was greater in the low-intensity condition than in the high-intensity condition in older adults during the 60-100 ms, 120-160 ms, and 220-260 ms periods, showing inverse effectiveness. However, there was no difference in the audiovisual integration of younger adults across different intensity conditions. Discussion: The results suggested that there was an age-related dissociation between high- and low-intensity conditions with audiovisual integration of the dynamic hand-held tool stimulus. Older adults showed greater audiovisual integration in the lower intensity condition, which may be due to the activation of compensatory mechanisms.

Effects of Stimulus Frequency, Intensity, and Sex on the Autonomic Response to Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation

This study aimed to determine how transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) alters autonomic nervous activity by comparing the effects of different tVNS frequencies and current intensities. We also investigated the sex-dependent autonomic response to tVNS. Thirty-five healthy adult participants were stimulated using a tVNS stimulator at the left cymba conchae while sitting on a reclining chair; tVNS-induced waveform changes were then recorded for different stimulus frequencies (Experiment 1: 3.0 mA at 100 Hz, 25 Hz, 10 Hz, 1 Hz, and 0 Hz (no stimulation)) and current intensities (Experiment 2: 100 Hz at 3.0 mA, 1.0 mA, 0.2 mA (below sensory threshold), and 0 mA (no stimulation)) using an electrocardiogram. Pulse widths were set at 250 µs in both experiment 1 and 2. Changes in heart rate (HR), root-mean-square of the difference between two successive R waves (RMSSD), and the ratio between low-frequency (LF) (0.04–0.15 Hz) and high-frequency (HF) (0.15–0.40 Hz) bands (LF/HF) in spectral analysis, which indicates sympathetic and parasympathetic activity, respectively, in heart rate variability (HRV), were recorded for analysis. Although stimulation at all frequencies significantly reduced HR (p = 0.001), stimulation at 100 Hz had the most pronounced effect (p = 0.001) in Experiment 1 and was revealed to be required to deliver at 3.0 mA in Experiment 2 (p = 0.003). Additionally, participants with higher baseline sympathetic activity experienced higher parasympathetic response during stimulation, and sex differences may exist in the autonomic responses by the application of tVNS. Therefore, our findings suggest that optimal autonomic changes induced by tVNS to the left cymba conchae vary depending on stimulating parameters and sex.

Impact of oral motor task training on corticomotor pathways and diadochokinetic rates in young healthy participants.

BackgroundStudies addressing the training‐induced neuroplasticity and interrelationships of the lip, masseter, and tongue motor representations in the human motor cortex using single syllable repetition are lacking.ObjectiveThis study investigated the impact of a repeated training in a novel PaTaKa diadochokinetic (DDK) orofacial motor task (OMT) on corticomotor control of the lips, masseter, and tongue muscles in young healthy participants.MethodsA total of 22 young healthy volunteers performed 3 consecutive days of training in an OMT. Transcranial magnetic stimulation was applied to elicit motor evoked potentials (MEPs) from the lip, masseter, tongue, and first dorsal interosseous (FDI, internal control) muscles. MEPs were assessed by stimulus–response curves and corticomotor mapping at baseline and after OMT. The DDK rate from PaTaKa single syllable repetition and numeric rating scale (NRS) scores were also obtained at baseline and immediately after each OMT. Repeated‐measures analysis of variance was used to detect differences at a significance level of 5%.ResultsThere was a significant effect of OMT and stimulus intensity on the lips, masseter, and tongue MEPs compared to baseline (p < .001), but not FDI MEPs (p > .05). OMT increased corticomotor topographic maps area (p < .001), and DDK rates (p < .01).ConclusionOur findings suggest that 3 consecutive days of a repeated PaTaKa training in an OMT can induce neuroplastic changes in the corticomotor pathways of orofacial muscles, and it may be related to mechanisms underlying the improvement of orofacial fine motor skills due to short‐term training. The clinical utility should now be investigated.

Honey bees respond to multimodal stimuli following the principle of inverse effectiveness.

ABSTRACTMultisensory integration is assumed to entail benefits for receivers across multiple ecological contexts. However, signal integration effectiveness is constrained by features of the spatiotemporal and intensity domains. How sensory modalities are integrated during tasks facilitated by learning and memory, such as pollination, remains unsolved. Honey bees use olfactory and visual cues during foraging, making them a good model to study the use of multimodal signals. Here, we examined the effect of stimulus intensity on both learning and memory performance of bees trained using unimodal or bimodal stimuli. We measured the performance and the latency response across planned discrete levels of stimulus intensity. We employed the conditioning of the proboscis extension response protocol in honey bees using an electromechanical setup allowing us to control simultaneously and precisely olfactory and visual stimuli at different intensities. Our results show that the bimodal enhancement during learning and memory was higher as the intensity decreased when the separate individual components were least effective. Still, this effect was not detectable for the latency of response. Remarkably, these results support the principle of inverse effectiveness, traditionally studied in vertebrates, predicting that multisensory stimuli are more effectively integrated when the best unisensory response is relatively weak. Thus, we argue that the performance of the bees while using a bimodal stimulus depends on the interaction and intensity of its individual components. We further hold that the inclusion of findings across all levels of analysis enriches the traditional understanding of the mechanics and reliance of complex signals in honey bees.

A neurostimulator system for real, sham, and multi-target transcranial magnetic stimulation

Objective. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a clinically effective therapeutic instrument used to modulate neural activity. Despite three decades of research, two challenging issues remain, the possibility of changing the (a) stimulated spot and (b) stimulation type (real or sham) without physically moving the coil. In this study, a second-generation programmable TMS device with advanced stimulus shaping is introduced that uses a five-level cascaded H-bridge inverter and phase-shifted pulse-width modulation. The principal idea of this research is to obtain real, sham, and multi-locus stimulation using the same TMS system. Approach. We propose a two-channel modulation-based magnetic pulse generator and a novel coil arrangement, consisting of two circular coils with a physical distance of 20 mm between the coils and a control method for modifying the effective stimulus intensity, which leads to the live steerability of the target and type of stimulation. Main results. Based on the measured system performance, the stimulation profile can be steered ±20 mm along a line from the centroid of the coil locations by modifying the modulation index. Significance. The proposed system supports electronic control of the stimulation spot without physical coil movement, resulting in tunable modulation of targets, which is a crucial step towards automated TMS machines.

Stimulus intensity effects and sequential processing in the passive auditory ERP

Auditory stimulus intensity of innocuous tones is generally thought to have a direct effect on the amplitude of ERP components, but these effects have rarely been explored across a wide component range, or in multiple paradigms. Here we investigate component sensitivity to stimulus intensity differences in two studies. Study 1 (N = 36) employed a between-participants paradigm in which repeated trains of standard stimuli were presented as 50 or 80 dB SPL 1000 Hz tones. Study 2 (N = 18) used a within-participant presentation of alternating 60 and 80 dB SPL 1000 Hz tones. Electrode caps with 19 channels (referred to linked ears) generated ERPs covering the first 600 ms of each participant's EEG responses; these were submitted to separate temporal PCAs in each study. A similar series of components was obtained in each study: P1, N1a, N1b, N1c, P2, P3a, P3b, nP3, SW1, and SW2; an N2 was found in Study 2 only. Loud tones in Study 1 produced greater amplitudes in all components except SW1. In Study 2, Loud cf. Soft tones produced smaller P1 and nP3, larger N1 components, P2, and P3a, with no effect on N2, P3b, SW1 or SW2. These results indicate similar sequential processes underlying sensory processing in one- and two-stimulus paradigms, with the later stimulus intensity effects varying with paradigm.

Does height-induced threat modulate shortening of reaction times induced by a loud stimulus in a lateral stepping and a wrist extension task?

The StartReact (SR) effect is the accelerated release of a prepared movement when a startling acoustic stimulus is presented at the time of the imperative stimulus (IS). SR paradigms have been used to study defective control of balance and gait in people with neurological conditions, but differences in emotional state (e.g. fear of failure) may be a potential confounder when comparing patients to healthy subjects. In this study, we aimed to gain insight in the effects of postural threat on the SR effect by manipulating surface height during a postural (lateral step) task and a non-postural (wrist extension) task. Eleven healthy participants performed a lateral step perpendicular to the platform edge, and 19 participants performed a wrist extension task while standing at the platform edge. Participants initiated the movement as fast as possible in response to an IS that varied in intensity across trials (80dB to 121dB) at both low and high platform height (3.2m). For the lateral step task, we determined anticipatory postural adjustments (APA) and step onset latencies. For the wrist extension task, muscle onset latencies were determined. We used Wilcoxon signed-rank tests on the relative onset latencies between both heights, to identify whether the effect of height was different for IS intensities between 103 and 118dB compared to 121dB. For both tasks, onset latencies were significantly shortened at 121dB compared to 80dB, regardless of height. In the lateral step task, the effect of height was larger at 112dB compared to 121dB. The absolute onset latencies showed that at 112dB there was no such stimulus intensity effect at high as seen at low surface height. In the wrist extension task, no differential effects of height could be demonstrated across IS intensities. Postural threat had a significant, yet modest effect on shortening of RTs induced by a loud IS, with a mere 3dB difference between standing on high versus low surface height. Interestingly, this effect of height was specific to the postural (i.e. lateral stepping) task, as no such differences could be demonstrated in the wrist extension task. This presumably reflects more cautious execution of the lateral step task when standing on height. The present findings suggest that applying stimuli of sufficiently high intensity (≥115dB) appears to neutralize potential differences in emotional state when studying SR effects.

Investigating mechanisms of fast BOLD responses: The effects of stimulus intensity and of spatial heterogeneity of hemodynamics

Recent studies have demonstrated that fast fMRI can track neural activity well above the temporal limit predicted by the canonical hemodynamic response model. While these findings are promising, the biophysical mechanisms underlying these fast fMRI phenomena remain underexplored. In this study, we discuss two aspects of the hemodynamic response, complementary to several existing hypotheses, that can accommodate faster fMRI dynamics beyond those predicted by the canonical model. First, we demonstrate, using both visual and somatosensory paradigms, that the timing and shape of hemodynamic response functions (HRFs) vary across graded levels of stimulus intensity—with lower-intensity stimulation eliciting faster and narrower HRFs. Second, we show that as the spatial resolution of fMRI increases, voxel-wise HRFs begin to deviate from the canonical model, with a considerable portion of voxels exhibiting faster temporal dynamics than predicted by the canonical HRF. Collectively, both stimulus/task intensity and image resolution can affect the sensitivity of fMRI to fast brain activity, which may partly explain recent observations of fast fMRI signals. It is further noteworthy that, while the present investigations focus on fast neural responses, our findings suggest that a revised hemodynamic model may benefit the many fMRI studies using paradigms with wide ranges of contrast levels (e.g., resting or naturalistic conditions) or with modern, high-resolution MR acquisitions.

Effect of stimulus orientation and intensity on short-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI) and facilitation (SICF): A multi-channel transcranial magnetic stimulation study.

Besides stimulus intensities and interstimulus intervals (ISI), the electric field (E-field) orientation is known to affect both short-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI) and facilitation (SICF) in paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). However, it has yet to be established how distinct orientations of the conditioning (CS) and test stimuli (TS) affect the SICI and SICF generation. With the use of a multi-channel TMS transducer that provides electronic control of the stimulus orientation and intensity, we aimed to investigate how changes in the CS and TS orientation affect the strength of SICI and SICF. We hypothesized that the CS orientation would play a major role for SICF than for SICI, whereas the CS intensity would be more critical for SICI than for SICF. In eight healthy subjects, we tested two ISIs (1.5 and 2.7 ms), two CS and TS orientations (anteromedial (AM) and posteromedial (PM)), and four CS intensities (50, 70, 90, and 110% of the resting motor threshold (RMT)). The TS intensity was fixed at 110% RMT. The intensities were adjusted to the corresponding RMT in the AM and PM orientations. SICI and SICF were observed in all tested CS and TS orientations. SICI depended on the CS intensity in a U-shaped manner in any combination of the CS and TS orientations. With 70% and 90% RMT CS intensities, stronger PM-oriented CS induced stronger inhibition than weaker AM-oriented CS. Similar SICF was observed for any CS orientation. Neither SICI nor SICF depended on the TS orientation. We demonstrated that SICI and SICF could be elicited by the CS perpendicular to the TS, which indicates that these stimuli affected either overlapping or strongly connected neuronal populations. We concluded that SICI is primarily sensitive to the CS intensity and that CS intensity adjustment resulted in similar SICF for different CS orientations.

Lateralized Readiness Potentials Recorded with Near-Threshold Auditory Stimuli in Subjects Simulating Hearing Loss

Introduction: Preparatory motor cortical responses like the lateralized readiness potential (LRP) may be useful in revealing persistent attempts to feign hearing loss. Previous studies suggest only a marginal effect of stimulus intensity on the amplitude of the LRP. However, this has not been investigated using low-intensity auditory stimuli to cue NoGo trials. We address this in an experiment where subjects were instructed not to give a manual response to low-instensity stimuli, a situation that is akin to simulating hearing loss. Methods: The LRP was recorded from normal hearing listeners (N = 10) with 500 and 4,000-Hz pure tones and trains of 4,000 Hz (2-1-2) tonebursts. Electrophysiologic data underwent processing to (i) analyze the effect of the stimulus type on the LRP, (ii) classify results according to manual response with both logistic regression and linear support vector machine (SVM) models, and (iii) derive auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) from the tonebursts. Results: The amplitude of the LRP did not differ between the 3 stimuli used to elicit the response. Single-trial electrode data from Go and NoGo trials were submitted to supervised binary classification, and the logistic regression model gave a mean accuracy of close to 0.7. The Jewett wave V latencies of the resultant ABRs from some subjects were found to increase between the high (Go) and low (NoGo) intensity tonebursts. Conclusion: This study shows that auditory stimulus type does not affect the amplitude of the LRP and that the response can be recorded with stimuli that are near the auditory threshold. It can also be recorded with transient stimuli, and this allows for the possibility of simultaneously recording other confirmatory measurements, like ABR.

Clinical factors affecting pupillary light reflex parameters: a single-centre, cross-sectional study.

To evaluate the effects of stimulus intensity, aging, sex, smoking and eye symmetry on pupillary light reflex (PLR) parameters. We evaluated 2812 eyes from 1406subjects in a single-centre, cross-sectional study. PLR data were collected using four different stimulus intensities. We prepared two models for each of the eight PLR parameters, and defined the model with the lowest values of Akaike's information criterion (AIC) as being the best-fit. Model A was a linear regression model without adjustment for among-individual variability, while the Model B linear mixed-effects models (LMMs) were adjusted for among-individual variability. The regression coefficients of the two models were compared. Model B showed the lowest AIC values for all parameters and the best fit. For light stimulus intensity, age and eye symmetry, the two models yielded similar results for all PLR parameters. For sex and smoking index, some PLR parameters showed the opposite results, i.e., Model A showed significant effects while Model B did not. These results indicate that light stimulus intensity, aging, sex, smoking and eye symmetry are factors that affect PLR parameters. These should be adjusted when evaluating the clinical potential of PLR as a diagnostic tool. In addition, adjusting for among-individual variability due to LMMs can improve the model fit and reduce false positives. This can reveal the association between clinical factors and PLR parameters with increased accuracy.

Effects of Stimulus Intensity and Frequency on the Force and Timing of Sensorimotor Synchronisation

Abstract We report an experiment to investigate possible vestibular effects on finger tapping to an auditory anapaest rhythm. In a sample of 10 subjects, index finger acceleration and tapping force were recorded along with extensor/flexor activity and the associated electroencephalographic activity measured at central and cerebellar surface electrodes. In a prior session with a standard short air-conducted 500-Hz pip, vestibular evoked myogenic potential thresholds were measured and subsequently used to set the acoustic intensity. During the main experiment subjects were asked to synchronise tapping to the pips arranged in the anapaest at two different frequencies, 500 Hz vs 5 kHz, so that only the low-frequency high-intensity condition was a vestibular, as well as an auditory stimulus. We hypothesised that a vestibular effect would manifest in an interaction between the frequency and intensity factors for a range of dependent measures of tapping performance. No clear evidence was found for vestibular effects, but this was likely due to the confounding effects of an independent effect of intensity and the relative weakness of the acoustic vestibular stimulus. However, the data did show novel evidence for two distinct timing processes for the flexion and extension stages of a tap cycle and two distinct timing strategies, which we refer to as ‘staccato’ and ‘legato’, characterised by different profiles of force and extension.

Task-dependent audiovisual temporal sensitivity is not affected by stimulus intensity levels

Flexibility and robustness of multisensory temporal recalibration is paramount for maintaining perceptual constancy of the surrounding natural world. Different environments impart various impediments, distances and routes that alter the propagation times of sight and sound cues comprising a multimodal event. One’s ability to rapidly calibrate and account for these external variations allows for maintained perception of synchrony which is crucial for coherent and consistent perception. The two common paradigms used to compare precision of temporal processing between experimental and control groups, the simultaneity judgment (SJ) and temporal order judgment (TOJ) tasks, often use supra-threshold stimuli. However, few studies have specifically examined the effects of normalizing stimulus intensities to participant’s unisensory detection thresholds. The current project presented multiple combinations of auditory and visual stimulus intensity levels, based on individual detection thresholds, during a TOJ and a SJ task. While no effect of stimulus intensity was found on temporal sensitivity or perceived temporal synchrony, there was a significant difference in point of subjective simultaneity (PSS) measures between tasks. In addition, PSS estimates were audio-leading, rather than visual-leading as previously reported, suggesting that exposure to the particular combinations of stimulus intensity levels used influenced temporal synchrony perception. Overall, these results support the use of supra-threshold stimuli in TOJ and SJ tasks as a way of minimizing the confound from differences in unisensory processing.
