Effects of sodium lauryl sulfate and postbiotic toothpaste on oral microecology

ABSTRACT The diversity and delicate balance of the oral microbiome contribute to oral health, with its disruption leading to oral and systemic diseases. Toothpaste includes elements like traditional additives such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) as well as novel postbiotics derived from probiotics, which are commonly employed for maintaining oral hygiene and a healthy oral cavity. However, the response of the oral microbiota to these treatments remains poorly understood. In this study, we systematically investigated the impact of SLS, and toothpaste containing postbiotics (hereafter, postbiotic toothpaste) across three systems: biofilms, animal models, and clinical populations. SLS was found to kill bacteria in both preformed biofilms (mature biofilms) and developing biofilms (immature biofilms), and disturbed the microbial community structure by increasing the number of pathogenic bacteria. SLS also destroyed periodontal tissue, promoted alveolar bone resorption, and enhanced the extent of inflammatory response level. The postbiotic toothpaste favored bacterial homeostasis and the normal development of the two types of biofilms in vitro, and attenuated periodontitis and gingivitis in vivo via modulation of oral microecology. Importantly, the postbiotic toothpaste mitigated the adverse effects of SLS when used in combination, both in vitro and in vivo. Overall, the findings of this study describe the impact of toothpaste components on oral microflora and stress the necessity for obtaining a comprehensive understanding of oral microbial ecology by considering multiple aspects.

Solvothermal Synthesis of Calcium Hydroxyapatite via Hydrolysis of Alpha-Tricalcium Phosphate in the Presence of Different Organic Additives

In this study, the effects of sodium lauryl sulfate and various amino acids (DL-aspartic acid, dodecanedioic acid, and suberic acid) on the formation of calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite via hydrolysis of α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) were investigated; moreover, a combined effect of these additives and ethylene glycol as a synthesis medium was also estimated. The hydrolysis reaction was performed in solutions containing different concentrations of additives in aqueous and mixed aqueous–organic media under solvothermal conditions. It was demonstrated that the nature and the concentration of organic additives influence the phase purity and morphology of the final product. Higher concentrations of sodium lauryl sulfate and dodecanedioic acid induced the formation of impurities in addition to hydroxyapatite, while aspartic and suberic acid did not affect the phase purity. The morphology of the samples varied from plate- to rod-like depending on the concentrations of specific organic additive.

Effect of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate on Sorption of Cells of the Electrogenic Bacterium Strain Micrococcus luteus on Carbon Cloth.

Results of a study into the effect of anionic surfactant sodium lauryl sulfate on the sorption of cells of the electrogenic bacteria strain Micrococcus luteus 1-I on the surface of carbon cloth used as electrodes in microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology are presented. Investigations using spectrophotometry, microscopy and microbiology revealed an increase in the degree of sorption of microbial cells on carbon cloth under the action of sodium lauryl sulfate at concentrations of 10 and 100mg/l. The sorption of cells did not significantly differ from the control at a surfactant content of 200, 400 and 800mg/l. It had no negative effect on bacterial growth in the concentration range from 10 to 800mg/l. Due to the fairly high resistance of the electrogenic strain M. luteus 1-I to sodium lauryl sulfate, a widespread component of wastewater, it may be considered as a prospective bioagent for the treatment of domestic wastewater using MFC technology.

Commonly used dental mouthwashes and SARS‐CoV‐2—The road to what we know today

AbstractThe aim of this brief overview is to give clinicians a background for assessing publications presenting in vivo human clinical trials regarding the effect of common dental mouthwashes on SARS‐CoV‐2 virus. It explains how the effects of oral mouthwashes on oro‐nasally transmitted infectious virus was assessed in the early phase of the Covid‐19 pandemic. The method of virus quantification including effect measures and factors, trial design that may cause flaws in the effect estimates presented in publications are explained. The status of in vivo human clinical trials regarding the anti‐virucidal effect of sodium lauryl sulfate, povidone‐iodine, chlorhexidine, hydrogen peroxide and cetylpyridinium chloride is presented from the few systematic reviews available at this time.

FORMULATION AND STABILITY TEST OF CREAM FROM JUICE OF BELIMBING WULUH (AVERRHOA BILIMBI l.)

Research on cream formulations using starfruit (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) juice has been carried out to determine the effect of sodium lauryl sulfate on the physical stability of cream from starfruit juice. Carambola wealth as an active substance is made in cream with varying concentrations of sodium lauryl sulfate of 1%, 1.5%, 2%, and 2.5%. The evaluation was carried out in the form of organoleptic tests, homogeneity, cream type, pH, viscosity, centrifugation, and freeze-thaw. Data analysis was carried out using statistical tests using ANOVA which has a 95% confidence level (α = 0.05), the test is continued with the Tukey HSD test, and the analysis results show significant differences in each formula. The research results concluded that the higher the concentration of sodium lauryl sulfate as an emulsifying agent, the physical stability of the viscosity of the cream from starfruit juice increased.

Toothpastes for children and their detergent contents affect molecular mechanisms of odontogenesis in zebrafish embryos

We aimed to evaluate how different types of toothpaste (TP) for children affected molecular mechanisms of odontogenesis in zebrafish embryos. Commercially available TPs were selected according to their detergent contents as the cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB) containing TP (TP1) and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) containing TP (TP2). TP3 contained no detergent. Effects of SLS, and CAPB alone were also examined. TP and detergent concentrations affecting development were determined as 750 mg/L and 4 mg/L, respectively. Embryos were exposed to TP1, TP2, TP3, SLS, CAPB, and embryo medium (control) for 72 h post fertilization. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and oxidant–antioxidant parameters were analyzed spectrophotometrically. Expressions of tooth development genes were evaluated by reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR). Intraocular distance, lower jaw, and ceratohyal cartilage length were displayed using Alcian Blue staining. axin2 and wnt10a expressions increased in SLS and TP2 groups. igf2a and eve1 expressions decreased in all groups except TP3. nrOb1 expression decreased in TP1, SLS, and CAPB groups. Oxidant–antioxidant balance was disturbed in all groups except TP3, evidenced by increased lipid peroxidation, nitric oxide. SLS, and CAPB groups were more affected in terms of AChE, glutathione-S-transferase, and superoxide dismutase; perturbations were observed in cartilage structures. Altered expression of tooth development gene axin2 correlated with wnt10a, and with changes in cartilage structures in SLS and TP2 groups. TP3 group presented no disruptions in oxidant–antioxidant balance. Our study shows the availability of externally developing zebrafish embryos in examining the effects of TP’ contents on embryogenesis.

High Surface Area Silica Particles Using Anionic Surfactant Template Prepared by One-step Spray Drying System for Dye Removal Application

This study reported the effect of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) as a template on silica morphology and its properties. The precursor was prepared by producing silica nanofluid by the sol-gel method and mixed with various SLS concentrations. After that, the precursor was spray-dried to generate silica powder. An increase in SLS concentration up to 2 critical micelle concentration (CMC) indicates an increase in the silica particle size from 2.12 μm in untemplated silica particles to 2.58 μm. On the other hand, when the SLS concentration increases to 3 CMC, the particle size decreases to 2.19 μm. A significant increase in total pore volume and surface area is obtained for silica particles synthesized at least at the SLS concentration of 2 CMC, around eight higher volumes than without SLS addition. In addition, they have a macropore compared to silica particles synthesized without SLS addition that only exhibits mesopore. The surface area was 1,011 m2/g for the SLS concentration at 3 CMC, whereas the silica without SLS has only a surface area of 131 m2/g. The SLS concentration at 2 CMC or higher leads to a significant increase in its physical properties because the micelle formation is enough for sacrificed template formation. Methylene blue solution was used as an adsorbate for evaluating the dye adsorption capacity that followed the Langmuir isothermal adsorption model. The highest theoretical maximum monolayer adsorption capacity was 142.9 mg/g, obtained by silica adsorbent with the SLS concentration at 3 CMC.

Toxic Effects of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate on Antioxidant Defense System and DNA Damage in Fish Primary Hepatocyte Cultures

Abstract Synthetic detergents which have a major role in environmental pollution accumulate over time and reach levels that harm nature. The surfactants which are abundantly used as cleaning components are discharged into the Van Lake with the sewage water. These chemicals accumulating in the lake may reach a level that could affect the only fish species of the lake, the Van fish. This study aimed to determine the antioxidant levels of Van fish hepatocyte cell culture medium treated with sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and to assess the DNA damage. The effect of SLS was assessed by its dose (1x10−5, 1x10-6, 1x10−7 M) and treatment time (24 h, 48 h). Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), malondialdehyde (MDA), and DNA damage (8-OHdG) were determined in the SLS hepatocyte culture. SOD and GSH-Px were higher on 24 h and 48 h compared to the control group. A significant increase was observed in CAT level in the first 24 h, especially in 1x10−6 and 1x10-5 M concentration. At 48 h, it was observed that the CAT level decreased significantly as the concentration increased. It was determined that MDA and 8-OHdG levels increased depending on concentration and time. In conclusion, different concentrations of SLS affected antioxidant levels in the primary hepatocyte culture of Van Fish and were found to cause an increase in the levels of MDA and 8-OHdG.

The Impact of Process and Formulation Parameters on the Fabrication of Efavirenz Nanosuspension to Improve Drug Solubility and Dissolution.

Efavirenz nanosuspensions (EZ-NSs) were developed by the wet milling method as the most promising top-down nanosizing technique. Different process and formulation parameters were studied and optimized to produce appropriate EZ-NS in suitable conditions to enhance drug dissolution. In the preliminary studies, various polymeric stabilizers, including Pluronic F68, sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), as well as different sizes and weight of milling beads were used to prepare NSs. The effect of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) concentration on the NS properties was also evaluated. The influence of other formulation and process parameters, including polymer concentration, milling speed, and milling time, on the particle size and distribution of NSs were investigated using Box-Behnken design. The optimized freeze-dried nanosuspension was characterized by redispersibility, physicochemical properties, and stability. A combination of PVA and SLS was selected as steric and electrostatic stabilizers. The optimum EZ-NS displayed a uniform size distribution with a mean particle size and zeta potential of 254.4 nm and 21.1 mV, respectively. The solidified nanosuspension was well redispersed to the original nanoparticles. Significantly enhanced aqueous solubility (about 11-fold) and accelerated dissolution rate were observed for the optimized formulation. This could be attributed to the reduced particle size and partial amorphization of EZ during the preparation process, studied by X-ray diffraction. Accelerated studies confirmed the stability of the optimum freeze-dried formulation over the examined period of three months. Optimization of different variables led to the formation of EZ-NSs with desired properties through wet milling in a very short time compared to the previous study and therefore reduced production costs. This formulation seems to be a suitable approach for solubility and dissolution enhancement of EZ and may have a great potential to improve the drug's oral bioavailability.

Tablet Formulation of 2-((3-(Chloromethyl)benzoyl)oxy)benzoic Acid by Linear and Quadratic Models

Purpose: This research determines the effect of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) as a surfactant, croscarmellose sodium (CS) as a disintegrating agent, and SLS–CS combinations on 2-((3-(chloromethyl)benzoyl)oxy)benzoic acid (3CH2Cl) (log P = 3.73) tablet formulations. In addition, this study aims to determine the optimum of the 3CH2Cl tablet formula. Methods: The tablets are manufactured through direct compression according to the simplex lattice design. The optimal SLS and CS concentration was determined in vitro using linear and quadratic models to achieve better tablet disintegration and dissolution. Results: The same linear and quadratic coefficient profiles of SLS and CS indicate that the combined coefficient of SLS–CS with a quadratic model can be used to predict the effect of the SLS–CS combination. Based on the linear model coefficients, SLS and CS increase the value of flow time (9.35; 7.65), Carr index (26.17; 21.17), hardness (9.84; 7.44), friability (0.38; 0.31), disintegrating time (5.74; 2.62), and drug release (84.28; 58.65). The quadratic model coefficient shows that SLS–CS combinations increase flow time (0.60), Carr index (2.00), hardness (1.00), and disintegrating time (1.04). Meanwhile, they decrease friability (−0.02) and drug release (−9.10). Conclusions: SLS, CS, and SLS–CS combinations affect the quality of tablet mass and tablets. The optimum tablet formula was 3CH2Cl (300 mg), Ne (9.38%), SLS (0.92%), CS (2.33%), MCC (5%), and SDL (ad 800 mg). 3CH2Cl has analgesic activity despite the presence of tablet excipients. The 3CH2Cl tablet is an innovative formulation and a new alternative for future analgesic drugs.

The influence of salinity on sodium lauryl sulfate toxicity in Mytilus galloprovincialis

The influence of salinity on the effects of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) was evaluated using the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, exposed for 28 days to SLS (control-0.0 and 4.0 mg/L) under three salinity levels (Control-30, 25 and 35). The effects were monitored using biomarkers related to metabolism and energy reserves, defence mechanisms (antioxidant and biotransformation enzymes) and cellular damage. The results revealed that non-contaminated mussels tended to maintain their metabolic capacity regardless of salinity, without activation of antioxidant defence strategies. On the contrary, although contaminated mussels presented decreased metabolic capacity at salinities 25 and 35, they were able to activate their antioxidant mechanisms, preventing cellular damage. Overall, the present findings indicate that SLS, especially under stressful salinity levels, might potentially jeopardize population survival and reproduction success since reduced metabolism and alterations on mussels’ antioxidant mechanisms will impair their biochemical and, consequently, physiological performance.

Piper nigrum L fructus with active compound piperin had been known have an analgesic effect. Ethanol extract of Piper nigrum formulated to transdermal patch to reduce side effect of analgesic oral. The aim of this research was to know the effect of sodium lauryl sulphate, Tween 80, isopropyl myristate as enhancer of transdermal patch ethanolic extract of Piper nigrum L. Analgesic effect of Piper nigrum L. carried out by writhing method after acetic acid induction in mice. Parameters used were the number of writhing and macrophage from peritoneal fluid of mice at the end of this study. Based on this study, ethanol extract of Piper nigrum had an analgesic effect. The used of sodium lauryl sulphate 5%, Tween 80 5%, isopropyl myristate6% as enhancer increased the analgesic effect of Piper nigrum L.

Effect of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) Applied as a Patch on Human Skin Physiology and Its Microbiota

In this study, we assessed the change in skin microbiota composition, relative abundance, and diversity with skin physiology disruption induced by SLS patch. Healthy women declaring to have a reactive skin were submitted to a 0.5% aqueous sodium lauryl sulfate solution application under occlusive patch condition for 24 h. Skin properties were characterized by tewametry, corneometry, and colorimetry and bacterial diversity was assessed by 16S rRNA sequencing. Analysis before and one day after SLS patch removal revealed an increase of skin redness and a decrease of stratum corneum hydration and skin barrier function. The relative abundance of taxa containing potential pathogens increase (Firmicutes: Staphylococcaceae; Proteobacteria: Enterobacteriaceae, Pantoea) while some of the most occurring Actinobacteria with valuable skin protection and repair capacities decreased (Micrococcus, Kocuria, and Corynebacterium). We observed an impaired skin barrier function and dehydration induced by SLS patch disturb the subtle balance of skin microbiota towards skin bacterial community dysbiosis. This study provides new insights on the skin bacterial composition and skin physiology simultaneously impaired by a SLS patch.

The Role of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate on the Film Properties of Styrene-Butyl Acrylate-Acrylic Acid Copolymer Latex

In this study, the concentration effect of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) as a surfactant in the synthesis of styrene/acrylic acid/butyl acrylate copolymer (SAC) latex particles via seeded emulsion polymerization technique was investigated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), minimum film-forming temperature (MFFT), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques were used to explain the change on physicochemical properties and morphology. The main goal is to determine an optimal surfactant concentration to obtain latexes with low MFFT. DLS studies showed that the particle size decreases 118.30 to 75.18 nm with the increase of SLS concentration. MFFT of latexes decreased with increasing SLS concentration. From the TGA curves, it was found that all the SAC latex particles exhibit a three-step decomposition process. The observed single Tg values for SAC particles showed that the latexes were prepared successfully.

Functionality of disintegrants with different mechanisms after roll compaction.

The aim of this study was to investigate the functionality of two disintegrants (crospovidone and croscarmellose sodium) in tablet formulations processed via roll compaction and subsequent tableting. The influence of different fillers and the effect of sodium lauryl sulfate on the disintegration process were studied using full factorial design. For a direct comparison of disintegrant functionality, the center point formulations were manufactured via direct compression. Tablet characteristics, such as tensile strength, solid fraction, disintegration time and mechanism, and dissolution profile were determined. The results allow the conclusion that the functionality of the disintegrants is impaired by dry granulation. Both the disintegration mechanism and the disintegration time were different when comparing tablets made after dry granulation and by direct compression. The effect was more pronounced on the functionality of crospovidone than on that of croscarmellose sodium. In addition, sodium lauryl sulfate showed a notable influence on all tablet properties due to its lubricating effect. The variation of the filler also had a remarkable effect on the tablet characteristics. The results link excipient functionality to drug product properties depending on the applied manufacturing process and could contribute to extend the Manufacturing Classification System to excipient characteristics.

Effect of surface charge and other critical parameters on the adsorption of dyes on SLS coated ZnO nanoparticles and optimization using response surface methodology

Adsorption is a possible method with distinct advantages to remediate pollution due to dyes. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) coated ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized using the electrochemical method. The final product was dried at different temperatures, 60, 120, 150 and 300 °C. The sample dried at 60 °C was found to have the maximum SLS coating on its surface providing high negative charge density. This facilitates the adsorption of cationic dyes on its surface through electrostatic attraction. The effect of SLS on the adsorption process was confirmed by comparing it with ZnO without SLS. The effect of important parameters such as amount of adsorbent, concentration of dye, temperature and time on the percentage of adsorption was investigated using Box-Behnken design (BBD) of Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The prepared catalysts were characterized using X-ray diffraction analysis, infrared spectroscopic analysis, scanning electron microscopy, elemental detection analysis, thermogravimetric and zeta potential analysis. Finally, the study was extended to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms in order to confirm the type of adsorption. The adsorption kinetics studies showed that it obeys pseudo second order kinetics.

The Effect of Concentration of Personal Care Pollutant in Domestic Wastewater on the Efficiency Removal of COD and Ammonium in Batch Reactor

One of the dominant compound in a personal care product is sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). So in this study, SLS is used as a pollutant that might influence the anaerobic digestion treatment. The effect of SLS on the efficient removal of ammonium (NH4+) and COD can be investigated with anaerobic batch reactors. In these reactors, house septic tank sediments were contacted with artificial wastewater with ammonium concentration 30 mg NH4+−N/L and 300 mg/L COD concentration. Reactors are operated for 15 days with variations of SLS concentration 0, 5, 10, 50, 100 mg/L. The best COD removal efficiency and the rate is in the 5 mg SLS/L with the efficiency value of 99,6% and a reduced rate of 19,67 mg/L. The efficiency and rate of COD removal continue to decrease with increasing SLS concentrations. Meanwhile, the best ammonium (NH4+−N) removal efficiency and the rate is in the 0 mg SLS/L with an efficiency value of 73,32% and a reduced rate of 1,30 mg/L. The magnitude of the efficiency and removal rate of ammonium also decreases with increasing SLS concentration. Temperature and pH values for all reactors are in the range of 26-28°C. The pH values in the five reactors were relatively the same both without and with the addition of SLS concentrations.

Formulation and Optimization of Monolithic Fixed-Dose Combination of Metformin HCl and Glibenclamide Orodispersible Tablets.

The treatment of type II DM involves the use of combination of drugs, especially at the chronic stage. However, the pill burden of this combination therapy combined with swallowing difficulties, occurring at a later stage of DM, has been the major challenge for successful treatment outcomes. This study was aimed at formulating and optimizing a monolithic fixed-dose combination (FDC) of metformin (MET) and glibenclamide (GLB) orodispersible tablets (ODTs) to overcome both the pill burden and swallowing problems. The FDC ODTs were prepared by the melt granulation technique using polyethylene glycol (PEG) 6000 as a binding agent and crospovidone as a superdisintegrant. In the preliminary study, the effects of sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), PEG 6000, crospovidone, and compression force on friability, disintegration time, and drug release of tablets were investigated. The FT-IR studies showed that there were no incompatibilities between MET and GLB as well as within excipients. The preliminary studies revealed that PEG 6000 and compression force significantly affect both the friability and the disintegration time, while SLS and crospovidone only affect the disintegration time. Therefore, the effects of PEG 6000, crospovidone, and compression force were further studied and optimized using the central composite design. Accordingly, the most desirable optimal values were obtained at 3.82% of PEG 6000, 9.83% of crospovidone, and 10.6 kN compression force having a friability of 0.302% and a disintegration time of 18.7 seconds. From these results, it can be concluded that a monolithic FDC of MET and GLB ODTs having adequate mechanical strength and faster disintegration time was successfully formulated.

The potential of saponin from Jamaica’s Blighia sapida (ackee) as a substitute for sodium lauryl sulphate in toothpaste

Discovering novel means of protection from harmful substances in toothpaste is essential due to its mass production, and frequent exposure to its ingredients by consumers. This method of safeguarding through discovery demonstrates toothpaste safety, which is at risk of being stifled by other commercial priorities. Among the ingredients in toothpaste that cause adverse effects is sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS). An understanding of this source and its effects therefore allows for investigating preventative strategies through the use of safer alternatives. Saponin, a naturally occurring chemical in several plant species was discovered to be an alternative compound that may parallel the effects of sodium lauryl sulphate, yet exude less ill effects. This article highlights the benefits of saponin and its presence in a heavily consumed and exported fruit in Jamaica (ackee, Blighia sapida). The possibility of extracting saponin from ackee, and its use in the toothpaste industry as an alternative to sodium lauryl sulphate are discussed. Through consideration of this alternative, the potential exists to improve the safety of toothpastes and consequently improve oral health.
