Stakeholders including employees, suppliers and business partners are nested within their local communities. Also, community not only encompasses the geographic boundaries of markets and regulations, it also entails social and cultural factors that shape individual and organizational behaviors (Marquis & Battilana, 2009; Marquis, Glynn, & Davis, forthcoming). Yet, research that explores the relationships between organizations and their local communities is still limited (Marquis & Battilana, 2009). Hence, this symposium brings together a diverse set of papers that examines the relationship between workplace experiences of disadvantaged groups and the community in which they are embedded, and how organizations can positively contribute to those experiences.
