Application of Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria on Vegetative Growth in Chili Plants (Capsicum frutescens L.)

Cayenne pepper is a significant plant in tropical regions, utilized not only as a culinary spice but also in the pharmaceutical industry. An effective strategy for enhancing the physical, chemical, and biological quality of soil is the employment of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). PGPR, a soil microorganism that colonizes plant roots, can accelerate growth and protect against certain pathogens. The use of PGPR, particularly in biocontrol of plant pathogens and biofertilization, is prevalent across various global regions. This study evaluates the effectiveness of PGPR in boosting the growth of cayenne pepper and was conducted in Peresak Village, Narmada District, West Lombok Regency, NTB Province. The methodology implemented was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) experiment with five treatments and five replications, totaling 25 plant units. The treatments included a control (P0 ml/L) and four PGPR concentrations: P1 (10 ml/L), P2 (20 ml/L), P3 (30 ml/L), and P4 (40 ml/L). Each PGPR dose was dissolved in 1 liter of water and administered at 200 ml per polybag. The findings indicated that PGPR application significantly impacted the growth of cayenne pepper plants, notably increasing plant height, leaf count, branch count, and flower count. The 30 ml/L PGPR concentration (P3) proved most effective in enhancing these growth parameters. The results underscore the substantial benefits of incorporating PGPR as a biofertilizer agent in agricultural practices to optimize crop yields.

Interactive effect of ambient and elevated levels of tropospheric ozone, nutrition and PGPR on growth and yield of chickpea (Cicer arietinum)

An experiment was conducted during 2020 and 2021 at ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, to study the interactive effect of nutrient and PGPR (Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria) on growth and yield of chickpea (Cicer aeritinum L.) cv. Pusa 3043 under ambient and elevated levels of ozone in FAOE (Free air ozone enrichment). A loss of 15–16% in dry matter production was observed under elevated ozone (EO3) when compared to ambient ozone (AO3) conditions. Seed treatment with PGPR was found to compensate for this loss as an increase in seed yield 18–19% was observed over untreated seeds. In terms of seed yield, the PGPR treatments with 75% nitrogen showed significant improvement compared to the recommended dose of fertilizer (RDF) application. A yield increase of 12% and 14% was observed with PGPR like RPAN8 (Anabena laxa) and An-Rh (Anabena torulosa with Mesorhizobium ciceri) (chickpea rhizobium) respectively, suggesting an advantage of an–Rh over RPAN8 under EO3. A combination of both PGPRs outperformed the individual PGPR, showing a 19% yield increase over RDF. This proves the potential of seed treatment with PGPR (RPAN8 and An-Rh) in ameliorating tropospheric ozone-induced stress in chickpea plants.

Mitigating microplastic stress on peanuts: The role of biochar-based synthetic community in the preservation of soil physicochemical properties and microbial diversity

Tire-derived rubber crumbs (RC), as a new type of microplastics (MPs), harms both the environment and human health. Excessive use of plastic, the decomposition of which generates microplastic particles, in current agricultural practices poses a significant threat to the sustainability of agricultural ecosystems, worldwide food security and human health. In this study, the application of biochar, a carbon-rich material, to soil was explored, especially in the evaluation of synthetic biochar-based community (SynCom) to alleviate RC-MP-induced stress on plant growth and soil physicochemical properties and soil microbial communities in peanuts. The results revealed that RC-MPs significantly reduced peanut shoot dry weight, root vigor, nodule quantity, plant enzyme activity, soil urease and dehydrogenase activity, as well as soil available potassium, and bacterial abundance. Moreover, the study led to the identification highly effective plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) from the peanut rhizosphere, which were then integrated into a SynCom and immobilized within biochar. Application of biochar-based SynCom in RC-MPs contaminated soil significantly increased peanut biomass, root vigor, nodule number, and antioxidant enzyme activity, alongside enhancing soil enzyme activity and rhizosphere bacterial abundance. Interestingly, under high-dose RC-MPs treatment, the relative abundance of rhizosphere bacteria decreased significantly, but their diversity increased significantly and exhibited distinct clustering phenomenon. In summary, the investigated biochar-based SynCom proved to be a potential soil amendment to mitigate the deleterious effects of RC-MPs on peanuts and preserve soil microbial functionality. This presents a promising solution to the challenges posed by contaminated soil, offering new avenues for remediation.

Synergy of Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria and Silicon in regulation of AgNPs induced stress of rice seedlings.

Silver Nanoparticles (AgNPs), as an emerging pollutant, have been receiving significant attention as they deepen the concern regarding the issue of food security. Silicon (Si) and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are likely to serve as a sustainable approach to ameliorating abiotic stress and improving plant growth through various mechanisms. The present study aims to evaluate the synergistic effect of Si and PGPRs on growth, physiological, and molecular response in rice seedlings (Oryza sativa) under AgNPs stress. Data suggested that under AgNPs exposure, the root and shoot growth, photosynthetic pigments, antioxidant enzymes (CAT and APX), expression of antioxidant genes (OsAPX and OsGR), silicon transporter (OsLsi2), and auxin hormone-related genes (OsPIN10 and OsYUCCA1) were significantly decreased which accompanied with the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO) and might be due to higher accumulation of Ag in plant cells. Interestingly, the addition of Si along with the AgNPs enhances the level of ROS generation, thus oxidative stress, which causes severe damage in all the above-tested parameters. On the other hand, application of PGPR alone and along with Si reduced the toxic effect of AgNPs through the improvement of growth, biochemical, and gene regulation (OsAPX and OsGR, OsPIN10 and OsYUCCA1). However, the addition of L-NAME along with PGPRs and silicon drastically lowered the AgNPs induced toxicity through lowering the oxidative stress and maintained the overall growth of rice seedlings, which suggests the role of endogenous NO in Si and PGPRs mediated management of AgNPs toxicity in rice seedlings.

Study on Plant Growth Promoting Traits of PGPR Isolates From Semi-Arid Kachchh, Gujarat Under Salt Stress Conditions

Salinity is a major problem in the agricultural sector, as it turns productive agronomical land to become unproductive. Therefore, Plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), that live in the plant root zone named the rhizosphere, is one of the prominent solutions to overcome this problem in an eco-friendly manner as Rhizobacteria responds to osmotic stress and support plant development. Thus, the present study was aimed to characterize various traits of the PGPR strains isolated from saline soils of Kachchh. The characterization of the traits in the presence and absence of sodium chloride was assessed including IAA production (76.97±1.68 mg/l), Ammonia production (38.59±0.19 mg/l), Siderophore production (49.21±1.83%), Phosphate solubilization (4897.73±25.53 mg/l). When assessed for the salt tolerance of the strains in the presence of NaCl between 20-50 gm/L, the strain D6 exhibited a better growth even at 5% NaCl concentration (2.047OD). Further, the effect of PGPR on the growth of V. radiata was 100% in all the experimental setup, whereas in case of B. juncea, the highest germination of 96.67% was observed only in T2 and T1+T2+T3. Further, the molecular sequencing of the strains revealed the identification of the strains as Klebsiella quasipneumoniae, Bacillus paralicheniformis and Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Comparative Analysis of Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria's Effects on Alfalfa Growth at the Seedling and Flowering Stages under Salt Stress.

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), a forage legume known for its moderate salt-alkali tolerance, offers notable economic and ecological benefits and aids in soil amelioration when cultivated in saline-alkaline soils. Nonetheless, the limited stress resistance of alfalfa could curtail its productivity. This study investigated the salt tolerance and growth-promoting characteristics (in vitro) of four strains of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) that were pre-selected, as well as their effects on alfalfa at different growth stages (a pot experiment). The results showed that the selected strains belonged to the genera Priestia (HL3), Bacillus (HL6 and HG12), and Paenibacillus (HG24). All four strains exhibited the ability to solubilize phosphate and produce indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase. Among them, except for strain HG24, the other strains could tolerate 9% NaCl stress. Treatment with 100 mM NaCl consistently decreased the IAA production levels of the selected strains, but inconsistent changes (either enhanced or reduced) in terms of phosphate solubilization, ACC deaminase, and exopolysaccharides (EPS) production were observed among the strains. During the various growth stages of alfalfa, PGPR exhibited different growth-promoting effects: at the seedling stage, they enhanced salt tolerance through the induction of physiological changes; at the flowering stage, they promoted growth through nutrient acquisition. The current findings suggest that strains HL3, HL6, and HG12 are effective microbial inoculants for alleviating salt stress in alfalfa plants in arid and semi-arid regions. This study not only reveals the potential of indigenous salt-tolerant PGPR in enhancing the salt tolerance of alfalfa but also provides new insights into the mechanisms of action of PGPR.

Effects of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria on blueberry growth and rhizosphere soil microenvironment.

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have a specific symbiotic relationship with plants and rhizosphere soil. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of PGPR on blueberry plant growth, rhizospheric soil nutrients and the microbial community. In this study, nine PGPR strains, belonging to the genera Pseudomonas and Buttiauxella, were selected and added into the soil in which the blueberry cuttings were planted. All the physiological indexes of the cuttings and all rhizospheric soil element contents were determined on day 6 after the quartic root irrigation experiments were completed. The microbial diversity in the soil was determined using high-throughput amplicon sequencing technology. The correlations between phosphorus solubilization, the auxin production of PGPR strains, and the physiological indexes of blueberry plants, and the correlation between rhizospheric microbial diversity and soil element contents were determined using the Pearson's correlation, Kendall's tau correlation and Spearman's rank correlation analysis methods. The branch number, leaf number, chlorophyllcontentand plant height of the treated blueberry group were significantly higher than those of the control group. The rhizospheric soil element contents also increased after PGPR root irrigation. The rhizospheric microbial community structure changed significantly under the PGPR of root irrigation. The dominant phyla, except Actinomycetota, in the soil samples had the greatest correlation with phosphorus solubilization and the auxin production of PGPR strains. The branch number, leaf number, and chlorophyllcontent had a positive correlation with the phosphorus solubilization and auxin production of PGPR strains and soil element contents. In conclusion, plant growth could be promoted by the root irrigation of PGPR to improve rhizospheric soil nutrients and the microenvironment, with modification of the rhizospheric soil microbial community. Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria as Tools to Improve the Growth of Kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes) Plants in an Aquaponics System.

The use of nitrogen as a fertilizer can be highly risky when used excessively, and it is therefore necessary to find novel techniques to reduce its use. Aquaponics reduces the use of synthetic fertilizers and water, and the leaching of nitrate into the environment. One way to avoid problems due to a reduction in nitrogen availability could be the use of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). This study examines the effect of PGPR on kohlrabi plants grown with a traditional nutrient solution (100S), in combination with "fish water" (50F/50D), or with a supplement of synthetic fertilizers (50F/50D + S). Two formulations were used: T1 (Azospirillum brasilense and Pantoea dispersa) and T2 (Azotobacter salinestris). Irrigation with 50F/50D caused a reduction in several of the measured parameters. The combined application of 50F/50D with T1 attenuated the negative effects. T2 did not present significant effects on the parameters measured. The results obtained with 50F/50D + S hardly showed differences with the 100S. Thus, by irrigating with 50F/50D + S, we were able to maintain the yields while reducing fertilizer use and water. The combined use of T1 and 50F/50D was also positive; however, it would be necessary to continue adjusting the amount of nitrate supplied to maintain production.

Tripartite Introductions of PGPR, Humic Acid, and N-Fertilizer Improve the Growth and Yield of Sweet Potato Under Glasshouse Conditions

This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) with humic acid (HA) as amendments on the morphological and physiological growth characteristics and yield of Sepang Oren sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas[L.] Lam). The experiment was conducted under glasshouse conditions at the Faculty of Agriculture, Universiti Putra Malaysia, for 110 days. Two factors were used in this experiment: The first factor was PGPR-HA inoculations (UPMB10, UPMRB9, and mixed strains) and non-inoculation-HA, and the second factor was the Nitrogen fertilizer levels (50, 75, and 100%). The treatments were replicated three times and arranged factorially in a randomized complete block design. The results showed that inoculations with PGPRs-HA (UPMRB9 and UPMB10 strains) positively affect the plant growth significantly (SPAD measurements, number of leaves, vine length, root length, leaf area index, root dry weight, shoot dry weight, and root: shoot ratio) of sweet potato upon addition of 50% and 75% of N-fertilizer, respectively. The nutrient content of soil and plant leaf significantly increased by 12-15% and 14-18%, respectively, compared to the uninoculated, when applied with the same inoculation. After 30 days, the population of soil bacteria increased, reaching a value of 8.65 log10 CFU/g soil. The use of PGPR-HA inoculations with N-fertilization resulted in a considerable rise in the majority of plant and soil parameters compared to the treatments without PGPR inoculation. Therefore, PGPR supplemented with humic acid (HA) may be considered a viable and sustainable strategy for enhancing sweet potatoes' morphological and physiological attributes. This technique can result in increased crop productivity and serve as a substitute for nitrogen-based fertilizers.

Enhancing Spinach growth and yield through the synergistic effects of Rhizobacter-Enriched compost

Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) and compost present promising solutions for bolstering agricultural sustainability by stimulating plant growth and yield while lessening dependence on chemical inputs. Our investigation delved into the combined effects of PGPR and compost on spinach cultivation, conducted at Amity University’s Organic Farm. Employing a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with six treatments and three replications, we evaluated how these treatments influenced spinach growth parameters and photosynthetic pigment levels. Results showed that treatment T5 (AIOA Strain + Compost) outperformed others, significantly boosting plant height, leaf breadth, root length, and leaf count per plant. Furthermore, T5 exhibited elevated chlorophyll and carotenoid levels, indicating enhanced photosynthetic function and overall plant vigor. These outcomes underscore the potential synergy between PGPR and compost in fostering sustainable crop production. By diminishing reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides while enhancing soil health and nutrient cycling, integrating PGPR and compost-based biofertilizers offers an economical and environmentally friendly avenue for augmenting agricultural productivity and mitigating environmental hazards. Further exploration into optimization techniques and underlying mechanisms is crucial to fully harness the potential of these microbial and organic interventions across varied agroecological settings. Overall, this study contributes to advancing our knowledge of employing microbial and organic methods in sustainable agriculture, crucial for addressing global challenges in food security and environmental conservation.

Study on the mechanism of salt relief and growth promotion of Enterobacter cloacae on cotton

AimsIn-depth studies on plant ion uptake and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) at the molecular level will help to further reveal the effects of PGPR on plants and their interaction mechanisms under salt stress.MethodsCotton was inoculated with a PGPR-Enterobacter cloacae Rs-35, and the ion uptake capacity, membrane transporter protein activity, and expression of key genes were determined under salt stress. Changes in the endogenous hormone content of cotton were also determined. Further, the genome-wide metabolic pathway annotation of E. cloacae Rs-35 and its differential enrichment pathway analysis of multi-omics under salinity environments were performed.ResultsIn a pot experiment of saline-alkali soil, E. cloacae Rs-35-treated cotton significantly increased its uptake of K+ and Ca2+ and decreased uptake of Na+, elevated the activity of the H+-ATPase, and increased the sensitivity of the Na+/H+ reverse transporter protein on the vesicle membrane. Meanwhile, inoculation with E. cloacae Rs-35 could promote cotton to maintain the indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) content under salt stress. Genome-wide annotation showed that E. cloacae Rs-35 was respectively annotated to 31, 38, and 130 related genes in osmotic stress, phytohormone and organic acid metabolism, and ion uptake metabolic pathway. Multi-omics differences analysis showed that E. cloacae Rs-35 were enriched to tryptophan metabolism, multiple amino acid biosynthesis, carbon and glucose synthesis, and oxidative phosphorylation metabolic pathways at the transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome.ConclusionE. cloacae Rs-35 can promote cotton balance cell ion concentration, stabilize intracellular IAA changes, stimulate induction of systemic tolerance, and promote the growth of cotton plants under salt stress.

The Beneficial Effects of Inoculation with Selected Nodule-Associated PGPR on White Lupin Are Comparable to Those of Inoculation with Symbiotic Rhizobia.

Nodule endophytes and associated bacteria are non-symbiotic bacteria that colonize legume nodules. They accompany nodulating rhizobia and can form beneficial associations, as some of them are plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) that are able to promote germination and plant growth and increase tolerance to biotic and abiotic stress. White lupin (Lupinus albus) is a legume crop that is gaining relevance as a suitable alternative to soybean as a plant protein source. Eleven nodule-associated bacteria were isolated from white lupin nodules grown in a Tunisian soil. They belonged to the genera Rhizobium, Ensifer, Pseudomonas and Bacillus. Their plant growth-promoting (PGP) and enzymatic activities were tested in vitro. Strains Pseudomonas sp., L1 and L12, displayed most PGP activities tested, and were selected for in planta assays. Inoculation with strains L1 or L12 increased seed germination and had the same positive effects on all plant growth parameters as did inoculation with symbiotic Bradyrhizobium canariense, with no significant differences among treatments. Inoculation with efficient nitrogen-fixing rhizobia must compete with rhizobia present in the soil that sometimes nodulate efficiently but fix nitrogen poorly, leading to a low response to inoculation. In such cases, inoculation with highly effective PGPR might represent a feasible alternative to boost crop productivity.

Soil microorganisms buffer the reduction in plant growth and physiological performance under combined abiotic stress in the halophyte Salicornia ramosissima

The impact of multifactorial abiotic stress combinations on plant functional responses remains controversial, and general patterns of response are yet to emerge. This knowledge gap is particularly relevant for species with innate tolerance to environmental stress. Using the halophyte Salicornia ramosissima as a model species, we performed a multifactorial study with 16 experimental scenarios that included or not beneficial microorganisms in order to quantify their impact on plant growth, photosynthetic performance, osmotic adjustment and ion homeostasis. The experimental scenarios were characterized by the combination of four factors with two levels (salinity: 171 and 510 mM NaCl; water stress: yes and no; temperature min/max range: 14/25 and 18/29ºC and atmospheric CO2 concentration: 400 and 700 ppm). A plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) consortium was used as a proxy for positive biological interaction. The results revealed that the multifactorial stress combinations triggered unique functional responses, depending on the stress factors involved. However, there was an overall more negative impact on plant functional traits under the most extreme scenario (i.e., 510 mM NaCl + water stress + high temperature). Interestingly, the presence of PGPR was able to reverse this negative influence, although this effect was negligible under non-stressful conditions. Furthermore, the positive effect of PGPR was even magnified when coexisting with elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration. This response is associated with mitigation of the negative impacts of suboptimal factor combinations on plant growth, photosynthetic performance/efficiency, and water/nutrient homeostasis. Therefore, we conclude that the positive impact of microorganisms on halophyte tolerance in complex environmental matrices would only be determinant under extreme conditions in which plant intrinsic tolerance mechanisms would not be sufficient. Remarkably, this effect could be accentuated by increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration.

Plant growth promoting rhizobacterium Bacillus sp. BSE01 alleviates salt toxicity in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) by conserving ionic, osmotic, redox and hormonal homeostasis.

Soil salinity leading to sodium toxicity is developing into a massive challenge for agricultural productivity globally, inducing osmotic, ionic, and redox imbalances in plants. Considering the predicted increase in salinization risk with the ongoing climate change, applying plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) is an environmentally safe method for augmenting plant salinity tolerance. The present study examined the role of halotolerant Bacillus sp. BSE01 as a promising biostimulant for improving salt stress endurance in chickpea. Application of PGPR significantly increased the plant height, relative water content, and chlorophyll content of chickpea under both non-stressed and salt stress conditions. The PGPR-mediated tolerance towards salt stress was accomplished by the modulation of hormonal signaling and conservation of cellular ionic, osmotic, redox homeostasis. With salinity stress, the PGPR-treated plants significantly increased the indole-3-acetic acid and gibberellic acid contents more than the non-treated plants. Furthermore, the PGPR-inoculated plants maintained lower 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid and abscisic acid contents under salt treatment. The PGPR-inoculated chickpea plants also exhibited a decreased NADPH oxidase activity with reduced production of reactive oxygen species compared to the non-inoculated plants. Additionally, PGPR treatment led to increased antioxidant enzyme activities in chickpea under saline conditions, facilitating the reactive nitrogen and oxygen species detoxification, thereby limiting the nitro-oxidative damage. Following salinity stress, enhanced K+ /Na+ ratio and proline content were noted in the PGPR-inoculated chickpea plants. Therefore, Bacillus sp. BSE01, being an effective PGPR and salinity stress reducer, can further be considered to develop a bioinoculant for sustainable chickpea production under saline environments.

The Effect of Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria on Soil Properties and the Physiological and Anatomical Characteristics of Wheat under Water-Deficit Stress Conditions

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of plant growth-promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) treatments, B1, Azosprillium lipoferum Sp2 and B2, A. lipoferum Sp2 + Pseudomonas sp. SARS12, as well as inorganic nitrogen doses (60, 100, 140 and 180 kg N ha–1) on some soil physical characters, physiological, anatomical and yield parameters as well as nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of wheat under water deficit stress. Results showed that water stress significantly decreased physiological characters such as chlorophyll content (6.7 and 9.8%) and relative water content (13.7 and 11.2%) in both seasons, respectively. Nevertheless, proline and malondialdehyde (MDA) were increased significantly (26.9, 12.3% and 90.2, 96.4%) in both seasons, respectively, as signals for water stress. The anatomical characteristics of flag leaves were negatively affected. Inoculation of wheat grains with PGPR significantly increased field capacity and RWC, adjusted enzymes’ activity and thus improved the physiological and yield traits and NUE as well as improving the anatomical features of flag leaves. Moreover, the combination of integrated PGPR and 140 kg N ha−1 significantly improved grain yield and its components as well as grain N uptake in comparison to control treatments. In conclusion, PGPR improved wheat productivity and NUE; they are an eco-friendly and cost-effective approach for improving plant production, and reducing nutrient leaching hazards and the negative impact of water stress.

The application of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria enhances the tolerance of tobacco seedling to salt stress

The application of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) is a novel and an efficient strategy for improving soil degradation and productivity. However, the effect of PGPR on tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) seedling growth under salt stress remains unclear. Here, microcosm experiments were designed to verify the effects of Bacillus cereus TC012 (BC), Bacillus methylotrophicus TC023 (BM), and Bacillus amyloliquefacien TC037 (BA) on tobacco grown in salt-affected soil. The results showed that BC, BM, and BA treatments significantly increased the height of tobacco plants by 38.65%, 91.94%, and 90.66%, respectively. Furthermore, the growth of various components of tobacco plant, such as stem girth, seedling biomass, carotenoid, and chlorophyll were stimulated in salt-affected soils. The changes in the salinity of the tobacco plant mostly relies on the improvement of proline, soluble protein, soluble sugar content, plant protective enzymatic activity, and K+/Na+ ratios. Increases in indole-3-acetic acid, zeatin riboside and gibberellic acid also promoted tobacco growth. Additionally, inoculation with PGPR enhanced the enzymatic activity of laccase, urease, neutral protease, acid phosphatase, and sucrase in soil samples and had positive effects on the physicochemical properties. The soil bacterial communities significantly improved after inoculation with PGPR. In particular, the relative abundance of Pseudomonas and Bacillus significantly increased. Overall, PGPR inoculation has great potential to alleviate salt damage in tobacco plants and may have far reaching benefits to the agricultural community.

A Pseudomonas Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacterium and Arbuscular Mycorrhiza differentially modulate the growth, photosynthetic performance, nutrients allocation, and stress response mechanisms triggered by a mild Zinc and Cadmium stress in tomato

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR; Pseudomonas strain So_08) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF; Rhizoglomus irregulare BEG72 and Funneliformis mosseae BEG234) in mitigating the detrimental effects of cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) stress in tomato plants. Plant biomass, root morphology, leaf relative water content, membrane stability, photosynthetic performance, chlorophyll content, and heavy metals (HMs) accumulation were determined. Furthermore, an ionomic profile was conducted to investigate whether microbial inoculants affected the uptake and allocation of macro- and micronutrients. Metabolomics with pathway analysis of both roots and leaves was performed to unravel the mechanisms underlying the differential responses to HMs stress. The findings revealed that the levels of HMs did not significantly affect plant growth parameters; however, they affected membrane stability, photosynthetic performance, nutrient allocation, and chlorophyll content. Cadmium was mainly accumulated in roots, whilst Zn exhibited accumulation in various plant organs. Our findings demonstrate the beneficial effects of PGPR and AMF in mitigating Cd and Zn stress in tomato plants. The microbial inoculations improved physiological parameters and induced differential accumulation of macro- and micronutrients, modulating nutrient uptake balance. These results provide insights into the mechanisms underlying the plant-microbe interactions and highlight the differential modulation of the biosynthetic pathways of secondary metabolites related to oxidative stress response, membrane lipids stability, and phytohormone crosstalk.

Microbial phytoremediation of chromium-contaminated soil with biogas slurry for enhancing the performance of Vigna radiata L.

Chromium (Cr) is a toxic heavy metal and severely reduces plant growth. It commonly exists in two forms, i.e., Cr+3 and Cr+6. Due to the high solubility and oxidizing potential, Cr+6 is more dangerous and can be converted into a less toxic form of Cr+3 by different physicochemical and biological techniques. Nitrogen-fixing rhizobia promote the growth of leguminous plants through various direct and indirect mechanisms, and their efficiency can be enhanced by integrating them with various organic amendments. Biogas slurry (BGS) improves the physical properties of soil and serves as an organic source of nutrients for plants and microbes. Rhizobia can convert the metal into a less toxic state, whereas BGS can bind it and make it unavailable for plants. Therefore, the current experiment evaluated the effect of rhizobia and BGS on the growth and yield of mung bean in Cr-contaminated soil. It was observed that individual and combined application of rhizobia and BGS ameliorated the Cr-induced adverse effects on crop growth and yield attributes. Combined application yielded more significant results than their sole application and control under Cr stress. Moreover, a significant decline in Cr uptake by the plant was observed due to the integrated application of rhizobia and BGS compared to the control. The collaborative effect of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and BGS can be suitable for improving mung bean growth under Cr-contaminated sites.
