Effect of nutrition education intervention on nutrition knowledge, attitude, and diet quality among school-going adolescents: a quasi-experimental study

BackgroundNutrition education is being used to encourage school adolescents to adopt healthy eating habits. To the best of our knowledge, very little study has been undertaken in Nepal to examine the effectiveness of nutrition education programs. This study aimed to assess the effect of nutrition education on nutritional knowledge, attitude, and diet quality among school-going adolescents in selected private schools in Nepal.MethodsA quasi-experimental study was conducted among 226 students aged 12 − 19 years of two selected private schools in Banepa municipality of Nepal. Students (n = 113) from the first school were assigned to intervention and the same number of students from the second school were enrolled in the study as the control. Over 12 weeks, students in the intervention group received one hour of nutrition education in the form of mini-lectures and interactive discussions, whilst students in the control group received no education. The student’s two-sample t-test was used to compare two groups and to assess the effectiveness of the nutrition education program.ResultsBetween the intervention and control group, the magnitude of difference in knowledge score was 1.80 (95% CI: 1.11 − 2.49), emotional eating was 0.98 (95% CI: 0.42 − 1.54), uncontrolled eating was 3.60 (95% CI: 2.10 − 5.09), and cognitive restraint of eating was 2.26 (95% CI: 1.51 − 3.01).ConclusionsA tailored health education intervention was found to be effective in increase nutritional knowledge and attitude among school-going adolescents. Adopting nutrition education interventions as part of public health school intervention builds positive knowledge, attitudes, and healthy eating habits in school-going adolescents.

Effect of nutrition education intervention to improve dietary diversity practice and nutritional status of the older people: Acluster randomized controlled trial.

The growing aging population raises nutrition and health concerns, with malnutrition in the elderly linked to negative health outcomes. Our objective was to implement theory-based nutritional education interventions to improve the nutritional status of the elderly through diversified dietary practices. A cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted from December 1, 2021, to May 30, 2021, among 782 older persons randomly selected from two urban and 12 semi-urban areas in southwest Ethiopia. We used Social cognitive theory (SCT) in guiding the nutritional education intervention. Data were collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire. The Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) tool was used to assess nutritional status, and a qualitative 24-h eating recall was used to evaluate dietary diversity. Difference-in-difference and generalized estimating equation models were used to assess the intervention effect. In total, 720 participants (361 in the intervention group and 359 in the control group) were included for analysis. The mean dietary diversity score differed significantly between the intervention group and the control group (p < .001). According to the multivariable generalized estimating equations model, the intervention group was 7.7 times (AOR = 7.746, 95% CI: 5.012, 11.973) more likely to consume a diverse diet than the control group. The nutrition status of the elderly in the intervention group improved significantly at the end of the intervention (p < .001). SCT-based nutritional education interventions can effectively improve healthy eating and nutritional status. For older adults, with its convenient approach and low cost, SCT should be considered an effective and efficient nutritional education approach for behavior change.

Effects of the nutrition education intervention on food security, anthropometry, and body composition in women: A randomized controlled trial.

Food insecurity as a social determinant of health is associated with adverse physical health outcomes such as obesity. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of nutrition education intervention based on the transtheoretical model (TTM) on food security, anthropometry, and body composition status. In this randomized controlled trial, an intervention was conducted over months (five weeks) using the TTM among 160 women aged 19-64 years. Food security status, anthropometry, and body composition were determined three times: at baseline, three months, and six months after the intervention. In the intervention group, food insecurity significantly decreased before, immediately after, and six months after the intervention, these changes were significant in follow-up time and treatment effect. After six months of follow-up, the intervention group significantly decreased weight (-1.29 kg), body mass index (-0.54), and waist circumference (-3.48 cm). Although differences between the two groups were not statistically significant except in the interaction between follow-up time and intervention groups. Also, the mean of fat mass and total body water decreased in the intervention group and differences between the two groups were statistically significant in follow-up time (p < 0.001 and p = 0.01, respectively) and interaction between follow-up time and intervention group (p < 0.001 and p = 0.005, respectively). In the current study, the findings of a six-month TTM-based intervention among women were positive that revealed to be a strategy that may improve anthropometric and nutritional status. Therefore, government programs that offer nutrition counseling should be prioritized to help the population to improve their eating habits.

A scoping review of nutrition education interventions to improve competencies, lifestyle and dietary habits of medical students and residents.

We reviewed the available research and gave an overview of the effects of nutrition education interventions (NEIs) on medical students' and residents' knowledge of nutrition, attitudes towards nutrition care, self-efficacy, dietary practices and readiness to offer nutrition care. From 28 May through 29 June 2021, we searched Google Scholar, PubMed, ProQuest, Cochrane and ProQuest to retrieve 1807 articles. After conducting de-duplication and applying the eligibility criteria and reviewing the title and abstract, 23 papers were included. The data were descriptively and narratively synthesised, and the results were displayed as frequencies, tables and figures. Twenty-one interventions were designed to increase participants' knowledge of nutrition-related topics, and eighteen studies found that nutrition knowledge had significantly improved post-intervention. Only four of the eleven studies that reported on attitudes about nutrition post-intervention showed a meaningful improvement. The self-efficacy of participants was examined in more than half of the included studies (n 13, 56⋅5 %), and eleven of these studies found a significant increase in the participants' level of self-efficacy to offer nutrition care post-intervention. At the post-intervention point, seven interventions found that dietary and lifestyle habits had significantly improved. The review demonstrated the potential of NEIs to enhance participants' dietary habits and nutrition-related knowledge, attitudes and self-efficacy. Reduced nutrition knowledge, attitude and self-efficacy scores during the follow-up, point to the need for more opportunities for medical students and residents to learn about nutrition after the intervention.

Educational intervention and livestock ownership successfully improved the intake of animal source foods in 6-23 months old children in rural communities of Northern Ethiopia: Quasi-experimental study.

Animal source foods (ASFs) are rich in high-quality proteins, including essential amino acids and highly bioavailable micronutrients vital for child growth and cognitive development. But, the daily consumption of ASFs among 6-23 months old children is very low in Tigray, Northern Ethiopia. The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of nutrition education intervention to improve the consumption of ASFs among 6-23 months old children from rural communities with strict religious fasting traditions of avoiding intake of ASFs in Northern Ethiopia. A quasi-experimental study was conducted in two food insecure districts namely Samre Seharti (intervention) and Tanqua Abergele (comparison). The mother-child pairs in the intervention group (n = 140) received nutrition education based on the barriers and available resources for optimal consumption of ASFs among children and followed up for nine months. The mother-child pairs in the comparison group (n = 153) received routine nutrition education. The data were collected using a pre-tested structured questionnaire. The baseline and endline data assessment included interviews on socio-demographic and socio-economic status, dietary intake, and child feeding practices. The effectiveness of the intervention was measured using the difference-in-difference (DID) analysis model. At endline, the consumption of ASFs among children was 19.5 percentage points higher in the intervention group compared with the comparison group (p = 0.008). In addition, there was a significant increase in egg consumption among children in the intervention group (DID of 16.9, p = 0.012) from the comparison group. No child was consuming meat at baseline in both the intervention and comparison arms and it was very low at endline (5.2% vs. 7.9%). Overall, the proportion of children that consumed eggs in the intervention group was higher than in the comparison group in households that owned sheep and goats (4.8% vs. 21.4%, p = 0.050) and chicken (6.3% vs. 43.8%, p = 0.002) after education interventions. However, no statistically significant difference was observed between cow ownership and milk consumption among children (p&gt;0.05). Age-appropriate educational interventions for mothers and owning small livestock in the household can improve the consumption of ASFs and eventually the minimum diet diversity of children in communities with strict religious traditions of avoiding ASFs during the fasting seasons.

This study aims to investigate and describe the types and formats of nutrition education interventions in colon cancer patients with a postoperative stoma and to examine the effect of nutrition education interventions on ostomate nutritional status. The method used is a systematic review through article searches on the Google Scholar, ScienceDirect and Proquest databases. The results showed that there was a significant improvement in the nutritional status of the patients. The ostomates can maintain fluid and electrolyte balance and albumin levels in the blood while suppressing the incidence of sepsis. One article showed a decrease in ostomate re-admission due to malnutrition (10.3%). THE EFFECTIVENESS OF NUTRITION EDUCATION ON INCREASING KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROSPECTIVE BRIDE

Stunting is a health problem that must be considered and treated early because it has a very long impact on a person's life. Aceh province is one of the provinces with the highest stunting prevalence in Indonesia, which is 37.1%. And the prevalence of stunting in West Aceh from 2015 to 2018 increased from 36.3% to 37.0%. This high prevalence is certainly a public health problem that is considered serious and must be considered, so that future generations of the nation will no longer experience stunting. Objective: to examine the effectiveness of nutrition education interventions to increase knowledge of prospective brides and grooms. Research method: the design used in this research is Quasi-Experimental with one grub pretest and posttest. The sample in this study amounted to 10 prospective brides. Samples were selected using a consecutive sampling technique. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis (Wilcoxon test). Results: Based on the results of the bivariate test, it was found that nutrition education was effective in increasing cathin knowledge (pvalue = 0.005).

Effectiveness of nutrition education intervention on maternal nutritional knowledge among women of childbearing age in Ikenne local government area of Ogun State, Nigeria

Background: Nutrient inadequacy during childbearing age and pregnancy is a major cause of intrauterine growth retardation of the foetus leading to other long-term health problems such as non-communicable diseases in later years. More so, child malnutrition and mortality can be majorly attributed to improper infant and young child feeding practices.&#x0D; Objective: This study was carried out to assess the effectiveness of nutrition education intervention on maternal nutritional knowledge among women of childbearing age in Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State.&#x0D; Materials and Method: A descriptive cross-sectional research design was employed for this study and 115 women of childbearing age were selected using simple random sampling technique. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire developed from the “Infant and Young Child Feeding Practices” nutrition education handbook by United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) which was administered pre and post the nutrition education. Data were vetted, coded and subjected to analysis using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21.0. Tests were statistically significant at p ≤ 0.05.&#x0D; Results: Below average (42.6%) of the respondents had good nutritional knowledge on breastfeeding, 42.6% had average on complementary feeding, while majority (61.8%) had good knowledge on health practices in the pre-test. The post-intervention test revealed significant improvement in their knowledge where 74.8%, 74.0% and 77.4% had good nutritional knowledge on breastfeeding, complementary feeding and health practices respectively. Testing the effectiveness of the nutrition education intervention, there was a significant difference between the pre and post nutritional knowledge test scores (p-0.00).&#x0D; Conclusion: The study population had an average knowledge on breastfeeding and complementary feeding before the nutrition education intervention. The post-education tests result showed improvements on their knowledge from average to good on all the practices. This shows that the nutrition education was effective in improving their maternal nutritional knowledge.

Development and Reliability Testing of a Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire for Australian Children (the CNK-AU)

ObjectiveTo adapt and test an existing questionnaire to assess Australian children's level of nutrition knowledge. DesignThe child nutrition knowledge questionnaire for Australian children consists of 8 nutrition-related categories: healthy choices, portion and serving sizes, balanced meals, nutrition labels, nutrient functions, and food sources, safety, and categories. Participants completed the questionnaire at 2 time points, with 1 week in between. SettingThe questionnaire was completed online in a primary school classroom using an Android tablet. ParticipantsFifth- and sixth-year students (n = 94; aged 10.9 years; SD, 0.76) at a primary school in New South Wales, Australia. Variables MeasuredItem difficulty, item discrimination, and reliability. AnalysisItem analysis, interrater reliability, and test-retests. ResultsThe intrarater reliability per item between the first visit and 1 week later was moderate to substantial for the majority of items (mean κ = 0.50; SD, 0.21). Test-retest found a significant correlation for total score (r = 0.756), with all categories except portion and serving sizes showing significant correlations above r = 0.502. Conclusions and ImplicationsThe child nutrition knowledge questionnaire for Australian children has the potential to be a reliable and practical questionnaire for measuring Australian children's nutrition knowledge. The questionnaire may be useful for future work evaluating the effectiveness of nutrition education interventions and would potentially be adapted to other cultures.

The Effects of a Nutrition Education Intervention on Sports Nutrition Knowledge during a Competitive Season in Highly Trained Adolescent Swimmers.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a seven-week nutrition education intervention on the sports nutrition knowledge (SNK) of highly trained UK adolescent swimmers. Fifteen national and international adolescent swimmers (males = 5; females = 10, 15.5 ± 1.1 years, 170.2 ± 7.5 cm, 60.3 ± 5.7 kg) participated in the study during seven consecutive weeks of the competitive swimming season. The participants received 30 min of nutrition education once per week in a classroom-based setting after they had completed their regular swim training. An undergraduate sports nutrition student delivered all nutrition education sessions and SNK questionnaires were administered to the participants pre- and post-intervention. The mean total SNK score improved by 8.3% (SD = 8.4%, 95% CI = 4.1–12.6; p = 0.006; ES = 1.0) following the nutrition education sessions. On an individual basis, ten swimmers significantly improved their total SNK score, whereas four swimmers did not improve, and one swimmer performed significantly worse after the intervention. Moreover, the swimmers’ knowledge of hydration improved by 22.2% (SD = 20.6%, 95% CI = 11.8–32.6, p = 0.004, ES = 1.1) over the seven-week timeframe, which was the only nutrition topic to have a significantly increased knowledge score. The current study therefore suggests that a nutrition education intervention can positively influence the SNK of highly trained adolescent swimmers.

Stunting has become a global concern in the last decades, several studies have shown that one of the main causes of stunting is based on the knowledge of the mother. The aim of this study is the effect of nutrition education interventions on maternal nutritional behavior in stunted children. This method of compiling a systematic review is based on literature studies from various electronic databases, including Scopus, ProQuest, Science Direct, EBSCO, ResearchGate, and Google Scholar by conducting a review using the latest PRISMA. The keywords in this systematic study were unbeatable with the Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) consisting of (Maternal behavior OR maternal behavior AND nutrition education AND Growth Disorders OR stunting). 10 articles fit the inclusion criteria, the main results of the articles discuss maternal nutritional behavior. Appropriate nutrition education interventions are effective to prevent and improve the status of stunting children.

Nutritional Education and Its Effects on Household Food Insecurity in Southeastern Iran.

Background:Food insecurity can affect health directly or indirectly through its impact on nutritional status. We aimed at determining the effects of nutrition education intervention on household food insecurity in Zahedan, southeast Iran.Methods:The study was conducted using multi-stage sampling method. The first stage was a cross-sectional investigation whereby 2,160 households were studied in Zahedan in 2015. The prevalence of food insecurity was determined and food-insecure households were identified. Household food security status was assessed through the 18-item US Household Food Security Survey Module. In the second stage, based on the determined sample size of 150 households in each group, eligible households were randomly divided into the intervention and control groups. Before the educational intervention, questionnaires including demographic and socioeconomic information were completed for both groups. Then, data analysis was performed and the intervention was conducted on the intervention group. Six months post-intervention, a final assessment was made by interviewing the two groups to complete demographic, socioeconomic, and household food security questionnaires.Results:The prevalence of food insecurity in the 2,160 households was 58.8%. After the intervention, the number of food-insecure households diminished by 22% in the intervention group, and these households were assigned to the food secure category. After controlling the confounding variables, the educational intervention was significantly effective in reducing food insecurity score (P<0.001).Conclusion:The findings demonstrated the beneficial role of nutritional education and the skills of resource management in modifying nutritional behaviors and improving food security in the study population.

Effect of nutrition education package on dietary modification and anthropometry among attendees of a noncommunicable disease clinic at a rural primary health-care facility in Delhi

Context: The global burden and threat of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) constitutes a major public health challenge that undermines social and economic development throughout the world. NCDs are one of the leading causes of adult morbidity and mortality globally. The disease burden in India due to NCDs has increased from 30% to 55% between 1990 and 2016. Aims: We aimed to assess the effect of nutrition education intervention on dietary awareness, practices, and anthropometry. Settings and Design: This design was a facility-based before-and-after intervention study without control. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in five phases: planning and recruitment, preintervention, intervention, washout, and postintervention. Data were collected using a pretested, semi-structured interview schedule under the following heads – personal, sociodemographic, and behavioral risk factors of NCDs. Anthropometric examination included weight, height, waist, and hip circumference measurement. Statistical Analysis: Collected data were entered into MS Excel and analyzed using IBM SPSS 25 for descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: There was a significant increase in mean score for dietary practices and knowledge regarding different food items in the study group. The mean number of servings of fruits and vegetables increased significantly following intervention in the study group (P = 0.001). Significant change in body mass index before and after intervention was found to be in the age group of >60 years (P = 0.041). Conclusions: The study has shown the usefulness of intervention aimed at improving dietary behavior among patients of NCDs. With growing burden, there is a need for such innovative and cost-effective measures for halting the rising burden.

Effects of Nutrition Education Interventions in Team Sport Players. A Systematic Review.

Considering nutrition education interventions have been frequently implemented in team sport athletes and have shown promising results, this study aimed to summarize the effects of nutrition education interventions on eating habits, nutrition knowledge, body composition, and physical performance in team sport athletes. A systematic review was conducted using the following databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science and SPORTDiscus. A total of 14 studies met the inclusion criteria for the review. The methodological quality of included studies was evaluated, and each study was assessed according to the analyzed variables (i.e., eating habits, nutrition knowledge, body composition, and physical performance). Most studies showed improvements in or maintenance of variables used to indicate eating habits, nutrition knowledge, and body composition. However, limited studies examined the effect of nutrition education interventions on physical performance, with existing studies demonstrating disparate results. These findings suggest implementation of nutrition education interventions in team sport athletes could be an effective strategy to improve their eating habits, nutrition knowledge, and body composition. Due to the heterogeneity across the included studies regarding sport modality, competition level, age, and sex of the athletes investigated, as well as the intervention type adopted (i.e., online or face-to-face), it is difficult to establish optimal nutrition education interventions for each analyzed variable.

Effect of nutrition education on iodine deficiency disorders and iodized salt intake in south west Ethiopian women: a cluster randomized controlled trial

BackgroundAlthough iodine nutrition status is improving globally, the progress is not uniform throughout the world due to several factors. Among these, poor knowledge, negative attitude and improper practice of iodized salt are the main risk factors for poor iodine nutrition in Ethiopia. This study was aimed to assess the effect of nutrition education intervention on knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of iodine deficiency and iodized salt utilization.MethodsA cluster randomized controlled trial was carried out among 652 women of reproductive age group in southwest Ethiopia. A total of 24 clusters were selected and randomized in to an intervention and control villages. Women in the intervention village received iodine nutrition related education for 6 months; while those in the control village did not receive any education. Baseline and endline data were collected from both groups. Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) was used to determine the effect of intervention.ResultsA total of 647 (99.2%) participants were successfully involved in the study. In the intervention group the median attendance was 10 out of 12 sessions. Women in the intervention group had shown statistically significant change in knowledge, attitude and practice scores as compared to control one. In multivariable GEE linear model, after adjusting for other background characteristics, the mean difference (95% CI) scores were 8.81 (8.46, 9.16) for knowledge, 3.35 (3.17, 3.54) for attitude and 2.90 (2.74, 3.05) for practice in the intervention arm.ConclusionsWell designed and community-based iodine nutrition education is an effective strategy to improve the KAP of iodine deficiency disorders and iodized salt utilization.Trial registration PACTR201809544276357 (Retrospectively registered on 14, Sept. 2018).https://www.pactr.org.

Effects of antenatal nutrition counselling on dietary practices and nutritional status of pregnant women: A quasi-experimental hospital based study.

Objective:To assess the effects of nutrition education intervention on dietary practices and nutritional status of pregnant women.Methods:In this quasi-experimental study, 215 pregnant women were enrolled from Gynae OPD, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Lahore, Pakistan during 2017-18. Dietary practices were assessed using the usual intake form and scoring was done against food guide pyramid. Nutritional status was evaluated by anthropometric measurements and biochemical estimation. In addition to nutrition counselling, each woman was prescribed with supplements commonly used during pregnancy. Dietary habits and nutritional status were reassessed after two months. The women lost to follow up were 21 (9.8%) therefore data obtained from 194 women were subjected to final analysis by using SPSS 20.Results:The age of women ranged between 18 and 38 years. Those who never attended a school were 14.4%; poor 46.0%; and working 3.7%. The comparison between pre- and post-counselling dietary practices showed improvement in the numbers of women taking recommended portions of bread & cereals (79.4% vs. 95.9%, p = <0.001); vegetables (50.5% vs. 64.9%, p = 0.004); milk & dairy products (38.1% vs. 81.4%, p = <0.001); and a reduction in the numbers of women taking recommended portions of meat & bean (100.0% vs. 94.8%, p = 0.002). The frequency of women taking recommended diet as per food guide pyramid improved from 3.1% to 37.1%. Vitamin D status also showed improvement in the numbers of women with normal levels of serum vitamin D (7.1% vs. 33.3%, p = 0.079).Conclusions:Overall, nutrition counseling showed positive effects on nutritional status of pregnant women. Thus, the nutrition counseling must be an essential part of antenatal care for all pregnant women in the setting.

The prevalence of childhood obesity in Indonesia increase from year to year. This circumstance is believed to be associated with the high consumption of fatty foods and lack of knowledge of a balanced diet. Conducting the nutrition education of balance diet (nutrition counseling) is one of the ways to improve knowledge and attitude towards nutrition and to reduce nutritional problems. The study aims to analyze the effect of nutrition education by utilizing the poster and nutrition card on elementary students at SDN Ploso I-172 Surabaya. This study was Quasi-experimental research with pre-post test design involving 29 samples of elementary students at SDN Ploso I-172 Surabaya. The samples were chosen through a simple random sampling technique. The data were collected by interview using the questionnaire. The statistical test utilized the Paired Sample T-Test. The nutrition education with posters media increased the students’ knowledge (p=0.005) and attitude (p &lt;0.001) on a balanced diet after the intervention. Similarly, in the case of nutrition education using nutrition card, there was an increase in knowledge (p=0.016) and attitude (0.002). The average students’ knowledge before they got nutrition education with poster media was 9.40, which then increased to 11.00, while the average students’ attitude score also increased from 71.47 to 78.20. The average students’ knowledge before they were given nutrition education with nutrition card media was 8.86 and increased to 11.57, the average students’ attitude value also increased from 72.21 to 79.28. In conclusion, there were the effects of nutrition education intervention using poster and nutrition card in improving the knowledge and attitude on balance diet of elementary students at SDN Ploso I-172 Surabaya

This study was Quasi-experimental research with pre-post test design involving 29 samples of elementary students at SDN Ploso I-172 Surabaya. The samples were chosen through a simple random sampling technique. The data were collected by interview using the questionnaire. The statistical test utilized the Paired Sample T-Test. The nutrition education with posters media increased the students’ knowledge (p=0.005) and attitude (p &lt;0.001) on a balanced diet after the intervention. Similarly, in the case of nutrition education using nutrition card, there was an increase in knowledge (p=0.016) and attitude (0.002). The average students’ knowledge before they got nutrition education with poster media was 9.40, which then increased to 11.00, while the average students’ attitude score also increased from 71.47 to 78.20. The average students’ knowledge before they were given nutrition education with nutrition card media was 8.86 and increased to 11.57, the average students’ attitude value also increased from 72.21 to 79.28. In conclusion, there were the effects of nutrition education intervention using poster and nutrition card in improving the knowledge and attitude on balance diet of elementary students at SDN Ploso I-172 Surabaya
