Effect of Kangaroo Mother Care on Retinopathy of Prematurity in Neonates Less Than 1,800 g or Below 34 Weeks of Gestation

Introduction KMC (Kangaroo Mother Care) is an established intervention to reduce mortality and morbidity in low birth weight (LBW) neonates. A multitude of risk factors and preventive strategies for ROP (retinopathy of prematurity) have been studied, however, the effect of KMC on ROP has not been reported. This study aims to study the effect of KMC on ROP in neonates with birth weights between 1,000 and 1,800 g. Methods The babies who received effective KMC (>6 hours per 24 hours for three consecutive days) were analysed in the intervention group and those with ineffective KMC were analysed in the control group. Variables significant in univariate analysis were entered into backward regression models in multivariate analysis. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated. P values < .05 are taken as significant. Results Of 783 neonates enrolled, 66 (8.4%) developed ROP (any stage). The incidence of ROP requiring intervention was 1.02%. Effective KMC reduced the risk of ROP by 95%, RR 0.05 (0.02–0.12) and number needed to treat = 5. The proportion of neonates with ROP in zone 1 and stage 3 was more in the ineffective KMC (42.4% vs. 1.5%) group than in the effective KMC group (51.5% vs. 0%) ( P < .001). Ineffective KMC, gestation <30 weeks, small for gestation, obstetric complications, asphyxia, sepsis, higher initial PEEP and lack of breastfeeding were significant risk factors for developing ROP. Conclusion KMC, an effective intervention to improve the mortality and morbidity in LBW neonates, was significantly associated with the reduction of any stage ROP and ROP needing intervention, potentially preventing a significant cause of childhood blindness.

Increasing the Resilience of Mothers With Preterm Infant: The Effect of Kangaroo Mother Care

Objective: Having a preterm infant is a stressful experience for parents, especially for mothers. This study was conducted to identify the effect of kangaroo mother care on the resilience of mothers with preterm infant hospitalized in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Materials and methods: In this randomized controlled trial study, 60 mothers with preterm infant hospitalized in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit were randomly selected and allocated to intervention and control groups (30 per group) ,in Fatemiyeh Hospital, Hamadan, Iran. Data collection tool included demographic information and Conner & Davidson Resilience Questionnaire (CD-RISC), which were completed by mothers before and after the intervention. Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) as an intervention was run in at least one hour daily for a week in the intervention group. The mother-infant pairs in the control group only received conventional method of care (CMC). Results: There was a significant increase in the total resilience score of the mothers in the KMC group (from 58.87±14.71 to 69.67±14.50) after intervention (P<0.001); however, resilience score decreased significantly in the mothers of CMC group (from 57.77±13.33 to 51.63±12.20). Conclusion: Kangaroo mother care could increase the resilience of mothers of preterm infants. Therefore using this approach as a complementary, effective, Low-cost, non-invasive care is recommended to maintain and promote the health of mothers with preterm infant.

Effectiveness of kangaroo mother care before clinical stabilisation versus standard care among neonates at five hospitals in Uganda (OMWaNA): a parallel-group, individually randomised controlled trial and economic evaluation

Preterm birth is the leading cause of death in children younger than 5 years worldwide. WHO recommends kangaroo mother care (KMC); however, its effects on mortality in sub-Saharan Africa and its relative costs remain unclear. We aimed to compare the effectiveness, safety, costs, and cost-effectiveness of KMC initiated before clinical stabilisation versus standard care in neonates weighing up to 2000 g. We conducted a parallel-group, individually randomised controlled trial in five hospitals across Uganda. Singleton or twin neonates aged younger than 48 h weighing 700-2000 g without life-threatening clinical instability were eligible for inclusion. We randomly assigned (1:1) neonates to either KMC initiated before stabilisation (intervention group) or standard care (control group) via a computer-generated random allocation sequence with permuted blocks of varying sizes, stratified by birthweight and recruitment site. Parents, caregivers, and health-care workers were unmasked to treatment allocation; however, the independent statistician who conducted the analyses was masked. After randomisation, neonates in the intervention group were placed prone and skin-to-skin on the caregiver's chest, secured with a KMC wrap. Neonates in the control group were cared for in an incubator or radiant heater, as per hospital practice; KMC was not initiated until stability criteria were met. The primary outcome was all-cause neonatal mortality at 7 days, analysed by intention to treat. The economic evaluation assessed incremental costs and cost-effectiveness from a disaggregated societal perspective. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02811432. Between Oct 9, 2019, and July 31, 2022, 2221 neonates were randomly assigned: 1110 (50·0%) neonates to the intervention group and 1111 (50·0%) neonates to the control group. From randomisation to age 7 days, 81 (7·5%) of 1083 neonates in the intervention group and 83 (7·5%) of 1102 neonates in the control group died (adjusted relative risk [RR] 0·97 [95% CI 0·74-1·28]; p=0·85). From randomisation to 28 days, 119 (11·3%) of 1051 neonates in the intervention group and 134 (12·8%) of 1049 neonates in the control group died (RR 0·88 [0·71-1·09]; p=0·23). Even if policy makers place no value on averting neonatal deaths, the intervention would have 97% probability from the provider perspective and 84% probability from the societal perspective of being more cost-effective than standard care. KMC initiated before stabilisation did not reduce early neonatal mortality; however, it was cost-effective from the societal and provider perspectives compared with standard care. Additional investment in neonatal care is needed for increased impact, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. BackgroundPhototherapy used in the treatment of hyperbilirubinemia may have a negative effect on breastfeeding. AimThe aim of the study was to assess the effect of kangaroo mother care (KMC) applied to newborns with indirect hyperbilirubinemia on breastfeeding. MethodsThis was a non-randomized experimental study with a control group. The study was conducted with 54 neonates (30 control group, 24 experimental group) who met the inclusion criteria. Under the researcher's supervision, the experimental group received KMC twice during hospitalization, with each session lasting for 1 h, during which phototherapy was temporarily interrupted. ResultsThe KMC group had a significantly higher number of breastfeeding episodes, pre-discharge LATCH score, defecation, and a significantly shorter duration of phototherapy compared to those in the control group (p < 0.05). ConclusionKMC applied to newborns with indirect hyperbilirubinemia was found to increase breastfeeding, the LATCH score, and defecations, and decrease the phototherapy duration.

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Introduction:&lt;/strong&gt; Weight is one indicator of newborn health. Babies born with low weight need serious treatment because in this condition the baby is easily got hypothermic. As much as 40.5 percent of infant deaths in Central Java Province in 2019 were also caused by LBW. Efforts to maintain the baby's body temperature in LBW still need to develop low-cost technology so that hypothermia does not occur.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Methods&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;strong&gt;:&lt;/strong&gt; This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of kangaroo mother care (KMC) using a &lt;em&gt;metka&lt;/em&gt; infant sling on the increasing temperature babies. This type of quantitative research was a quasi-experimental method was used a two-group pretest-posttest design. The sampling technique uses purposive sampling. The number of samples in the study was 30 respondents according to the specified criteria. The instrument used was a digital thermometer where the thermometer was only placed in the baby's armpit.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Results:&lt;/strong&gt; The result of this research showed that there was significant effectiveness in kangaroo mother care (KMC) using &lt;em&gt;metka&lt;/em&gt; infant sling on LBW body temperature p &amp;lt;0.05.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Conclusion:&lt;/strong&gt; The conclusion was there is the effectiveness of kangaroo mother care with a &lt;em&gt;metka&lt;/em&gt; infant sling on the temperature in LBW. Giving the kangaroo method with the &lt;em&gt;metka&lt;/em&gt; sling is considered very effective in meeting very basic baby needs such as warmth, breast milk, protection from infection, stimulation, safety, and affection.&lt;/p&gt;

The effect of kangaroo mother care or skin-to-skin contact on infant vital signs: A systematic review and meta-analysis

BackgroundIt has been reported that kangaroo mother care/skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth facilitates the newborn's physiological and psychological adaptation to extrauterine life. ObjectiveTo examine the effect of kangaroo mother care/skin-to-skin contact on infants’ body temperature, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate and heart rate. DesignSystematic review and meta-analysis. MethodsPubMed, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, Wiley Online Library and Taylor & Francis Online were searched for the period 1 January 2015 to 30 November 2021 for studies published in the English language. The methodological quality of articles was assessed using the modified Jadad scale and the Newcastle–Ottawa scale. Effect size calculations were made using the fixed effects and random effects models. FindingsThis meta-analysis included 13 studies, with a total of 891 infants. Kangaroo mother care/skin-to-skin contact was effective for maintaining infants’ body temperature (p = 0.000). Infants’ heart rate decreased (p = 0.015) and oxygen saturation was higher (p = 0.040) following kangaroo mother care/skin-to-skin contact. Kangaroo mother care/skin-to-skin contact did not affect infants’ respiratory rate (p = 0.896), but infants’ respiratory rate decreased after kangaroo mother care/skin-to-skin contact (p = 0.047). Key conclusions and implications for practiceKangaroo mother care/skin-to-skin contact is effective for improving the vital signs of newborns. Kangaroo mother care/skin-to-skin contact is recommended for all neonates, and standardization of this approach would be beneficial.

The Effect of Duration in Providing Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) on Mother's Psychological Function in Low Birth Weight Babies at Private Midwife Practice Millatin Khusniyati, S.Tr.Keb Jepara

A low birth weight babies, in addition to have an impact on physiological function disorders, will also affect the mother's psychology. Management is carried out by providing kangaroo mother care (KMC). There were 16 cases of low birth weight babies in April. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of Kangaroo mother care (KMC) time duration with Infant Physiological and Maternal Psychological Functions on Low Birth Weight Infants in Private Midwife Practice Millatin Khusniyati, S.Tr.Keb Jepara. This type of research is quantitative, quasi-experimental research design with two group post test design. There were 16 low birth weight babbies as the sample. The intervention was carried out once for an hour and two hours within 1 day. Data was analyzed by using Mann Whitney. The results of the study states there was no difference in the psychological status of mothers given KMC with a duration of 1 and 2 hours (0.626&gt; 0.05). It was concluded that there was no difference in the psychological status of mothers given KMC with a duration of 1 and 2 hours. These results can provide information, and practice giving KMC at a duration of 1 and 2 hours to psychological functions, through counseling and practics, at posyandu activities.

Effects of kangaroo mother care on maternal and paternal health: systematic review and meta-analysis.

To investigate the effect of kangaroo mother care for low-birth-weight and preterm infants on parents' mental and physical health. The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Register of Studies Online, PubMed®, Web of Science, Scopus and EMBASE® databases were searched on 16January 2023 for randomized and quasi-randomized trials on kangaroo mother care. Records identified were screened independently by two reviewers. Pooled relative risks (RRs) are reported for categorical variables, and standardized mean differences (SMDs) or mean differences are reported for continuous variables. Evidence quality was assessed using the GRADE approach. The search identified 30 studies involving 7719 preterm or low-birth-weight infants. There was high-certainty evidence that kangaroo mother care substantially reduced the risk of moderate-to-severe postpartum maternal depressive symptoms compared with no kangaroo mother care (RR: 0.76; 95% confidence interval, CI: 0.59 to 0.96). In addition, there was low-certainty evidence that kangaroo mother care reduced scores for maternal stress (SMD: -0.82; 95% CI: -1.32 to -0.32) and anxiety (SMD: -0.62; 95% CI: -1.01 to -0.23) and increased mother-infant attachment and bonding scores (SMD: 1.19; 95% CI: 0.27 to 2.10). Limited evidence indicated father-infant interactions may be improved, though no marked effect on paternal depression or stress was observed. No trial reported parental physical health outcomes. Kangaroo mother care for preterm and low-birth-weight infants was associated with less postpartum maternal depression, stress and anxiety and better mother-infant attachment and bonding. More research is required to evaluate effects on paternal health.

The effectiveness of kangaroo mother care in lowering postpartum depression in mothers of preterm and low birth weight babies: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Kangaroo mother care (KMC) intervention involves skin-to-skin contact between mother and infant. Some studies have shown a decrease in postpartum depression (PPD) in mothers of preterm and low birth weight (LBW) infants. However, the literature is scattered and of variable quality. To conduct a systematic review of available literature and provide a comprehensive picture of the effect of KMC on PPD among mothers of preterm and LBW infants. The study was reported following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) Guidelines. After PROSPERO registration, a systematic search was conducted using PubMed, Cochrane Central Library, and Google Scholar from the inception of the databases till 14 June 2021. Of the 2944 studies assessed for titles and abstracts, nine studies with 2042 participants were included in the review. Included articles targeted mothers with LBW (<2500g) or preterm infants (<37 weeks), used an authentic PPD tool, and had standard care or an incubator as the control group. Studies not published in English and in which mothers had a previous psychiatric illness were excluded. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool for randomized control trials and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for observational studies. All the results were converted to standard mean deviation and pooled together using a random-effects model with a 95% CI. A P-value of less than 0.05 is considered significant. KMC Intervention was significantly associated with a lower depression score than control groups. The reduction in depression in the intervention (KMC) group was moderate: SMD=-0.38 (-0.68 to -0.08; 95% CI; I 2=86%; P=0.013). No significant difference was found between the PPD scores of both groups using the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale score. The authors conclude that the negative effects of LBW and preterm birth experience on maternal mental health can be avoided to a moderate degree by KMC. Due to a lack of methodological uniformity, different scales for outcome measurement, and discrepancies in intervention features, significantly high heterogeneity was detected. The authors need further larger-scale studies with a uniform study design to better predict the efficacy of KMC better.

The effect of kangaroo care on cortisol levels and immune factors in breast milk.

This paper investigated the effect of kangaroo mother care (KMC) in the early postpartum period on cortisol levels and immune factors in breast milk. This quasi-experimental study was conducted at the obstetrics clinic of a university hospital in western Türkiye. The sample consisted of 63 mothers and their infants. All mothers had a cesarean delivery. Participants were divided into control (n=32) and experimental groups (n=31). The control group received routine care at the clinic. The experimental group received KMC for the first 3days after birth in addition to the routine care at the clinic. Milk samples were collected on the third day after delivery to examine cortisol, IgA, IgM, and IgG levels. All parameters were measured using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. The experimental group had lower cortisol levels (17.740±1.438) than the control group (18.503±1.449) (p<.05). This result showed that the difference between the two groups was clinically significant (effect size=.53). There was no significant difference in IgA, IgM, and IgG levels between the groups (p>.05). The experimental and control groups had similar immunological factors, but the former had lower cortisol levels than the latter. Therefore, healthcare professionals should encourage mothers to provide KMC to their infants as soon as possible.

Effects of Kangaroo Mother Care on Physiological Parameters of Low-Birth-Weight Neonates

Background: Maternal skin contact has impact on physiological parameters in newborns, some studies showed positive effects but as we live in under developing country and the data on impact of kangaroo mother care (KMC) on physiological parameters is very limited. We hypothesized that KMC is effective in stabilizing the heart rate, respiratory rate and maintaining the oxygen saturation and body temperature of low birth weight (LBW) newborns. Objective: The aim of the study was to determine effects of 3 hours KMC on physiological parameters such as body temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate and oxygen saturation in LBW neonates. Study Design: Observational Quasi-experimental study Study Setting: This study was conducted in Department of Neonatology, Children Hospital, PIMS, Islamabad, Pakistan from 1st June 2022 to 1st December 2022. Methodology: The neonates were hemodynamically stable admitted in NICU and Nursery of Children Hospital, PIMS with LBW with the bodyweight &lt;2 kg was enrolled in the study after taking the consents from mother or other female attendant. Data were collected by structured questionnaire and observational checklist after taking consent from each participant. After inclusion neonates was received KMC for 03 hours. Participants physiological parameters were monitored closely before and after KMC. The statistical analysis was done by using SPSS version 20. Results: Out of the 60 mother-child couples enrolled in the study. There was high frequency of neonates between 1-1.5 kgs with 36.7%. Out of 60, 33 were baby boys and 27 were baby girls. After three hours of KMC, temperatures showed significant increased (p&lt;0.001). Most infants' temperatures were maintained during KMC, and no cases of hypothermia were reported. Also, statistically significant increases in heart rate were seen throughout KMC (p&lt;0.001), with mean increases of exhibited bradycardia before starting KMC, but at the end of the session, all of their heart rates were normal (100-170 beats per minute) and stable. Practical implications Though KMC has been proven to be an efficient and feasible approach of caring for LBW infants in a hospital setting, there is a lack of evidence on its outcomes in Pakistan. In light of this, we set out to examine the impact of 3 hours of KMC on vital signs in LBW infants, namely their core temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation. The ultimate goal is to collect enough evidence to advocate for the strategy's widespread adoption. Conclusion: Better quality and more humanized care for preterm and low birth weight babies and their mothers may be achieved by encouraging the use of the Kangaroo Mother Care approach in neonatal intensive care units in Pakistan. Investigating the Effect of Kangaroo Mother Care on Maternal-Infant Attachment: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Study

Background: Maternal-infant attachment is the first social relationship between mother and baby that keeps the baby close to the mother. The conflicting results of the studies regarding the effect of kangaroo mother care (KMC) on maternal-infant attachment show the necessity of conducting a meta-analysis study. Objective: The study aimed to investigate the effects of KMC on mother-infant attachment through a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. Methods: Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, ProQuest, SID, and Iranmedex databases were searched to find clinical trial studies in English and Persian without a time limit. The Cochrane checklist was used to check the bias of the articles. Data analysis was performed using STATA. I2 index was used in order to assess the heterogeneity, and the funnel plot and the Egger test were used in order to examine the publication bias. Standardized mean difference (SMD) and random effects models were used to combine the studies and perform a meta-analysis. Results: In this study, 10 articles were selected for the systematic review and meta-analysis. The results of the present meta-analysis based on the random model showed SMD as -1.33 (95% CI: (-2.12, - 0.54), P = 0.001), and there was observed a statistically significant relationship between the control and intervention groups. So, the mother-infant attachment in the intervention group was higher than in the control group. Conclusion: This study showed that KMC improves mother-infant attachment. The results of this study can be applied to evidence-based decision-making by healthcare providers, and can also be suggested as a method to develop mother-infant attachment.

Study on the value of KMC combined with blue light irradiation in improving the therapeutic effect of neonatal jaundice

ABSTRACT Neonatal jaundice is a common problem that affects newborns. We aim to investigate the effect of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) combined with blue-light irradiation on enhancing the therapeutic effect in the treatment of neonatal jaundice. From May 2020 to August 2022, 89 neonates with pathological jaundice and their mothers were selected as participants. All neonates received blue-light irradiation. The participants were divided into two groups: 46 neonates cared for by KMC as the research group (RG) and 43 neonates receiving routine nursing as the control group (CG). The first lactation time, first breastfeeding duration, and scores of Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) before and after nursing were recorded and compared between the groups. Pre- and post-interventional total bilirubin (TBIL), direct bilirubin (DBIL), and indirect bilirubin (IBIL) levels of both groups of newborns were measured, and the time of jaundice resolution, first defecation, and meconium yellowing were recorded. Neonatal adverse reactions (ARs) during treatment were counted, and a nursing satisfaction survey was conducted at discharge. KMC group mothers had earlier lactation and longer first breastfeeding durations (P < 0.05). Both groups’ SAS and SDS scores decreased post-nursing, with greater improvement in the KMC group (P < 0.05). KMC group newborns had lower bilirubin levels and faster resolution of jaundice and meconium yellowing, with fewer adverse reactions and higher nursing satisfaction (P < 0.05). KMC can effectively improve the efficacy of blue light irradiation in the treatment of neonatal jaundice, and promote the healthy development of newborns and the efficiency of maternal breastfeeding.

ObjectiveThe stress and anxiety of mothers with preterm infants affect mother-infant interactions. Skin-to-skin contact demonstrates benefits in the relationship between a mother and a preterm infant. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) on depression, anxiety, and stress of mothers with premature infants. MethodsThis quasi-experimental study was performed on 100 mothers of premature infants who were admitted to two Bu Ali Sina and Imam hospitals of Sari in 2020. A questionnaire containing demographic information and the Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale (DASS) were used as data collection tools. All data analysis was performed using SPSS software version 25. Significant level is considered P < 0.05. ResultsThe mean age of mothers with premature infants was 28.7 ± 5.4 years. The neonatal birth weight was 1614 ± 342 g and their discharge weight was 2052 ± 418 g. After the intervention, the levels of depression (P = 0.004), anxiety (P = 0.000), and stress (P = 0.003) of mothers in the intervention group were significantly lower than the control group. ConclusionThe results of the present study showed that Kangaroo Mother Care can be used to improve the mental health of mothers with premature infants by reducing the level and severity of depression, anxiety, and stress.

&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Failure to give exclusive breastfeeding to infants can be caused by factors in the mother's condition such as the mother's confidence or self-efficacy to provide breast milk to her baby. Most primipara mothers have low self-efficacy due to difficulties going through a role transition period and carrying out the demands of their new role as mothers. Kangaroo mother care is a method of skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby (skin-to-skin contact). In kangaroo method care, breast milk can always be available and very easy to obtain, because the baby is near the mother's breast so that the baby can suckle whenever the baby wants it and also increases the mother's bonding so that it can increase the mother's self-efficacy thereby increasing the success of the breastfeeding process. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of kangaroo mother care on breastfeeding self-efficacy in primiparous mothers at RSU Royal Prima Medan in 2022. This type of research is a quasy experiment using a posttest only control group design. The results of the Independent T-Test test obtained a p-value of 0.000 which is less than 0.05 (0.000 &amp;lt;0.05), so that we can state that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. In conclusion, there is the effect of kangaroo mother care on breastfeeding self-efficacy in primiparous mothers at Royal Prima Medan General Hospital in 2022. Effects of kangaroo mother care on feeding intolerance in preterm infants.

Feeding intolerance (FI) is a common condition in preterm infants because they have an immature gastrointestinal tract. There are studies on the effects of the position on gastric residual volume (GRV) in preterm infants. Kangaroo mother care (KMC) may be an instrument for reducing FI by providing an upright position to infants. Moreover, numerous studies conducted with this therapeutic position applied by putting an infant on the mother's chest have indicated its positive effects on the infant's weight gain, growth and development, and vital signs. Therefore, this study aimed to reveal the impact of KMC on FI in preterm infants. The population of the study, designed as a randomized trial, consisted of 168 preterm infants [KMC: 84, Standart Care (SC): 84] hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit of a university hospital between June and November 2020. Infants were randomly selected and divided into two groups. After the vital signs of the infants in both groups became stable, the infants were fed in the same position. KMC was applied to the infants in the intervention group for 1 h by preparing a suitable environment after feeding. Infants in the SC group were placed in the prone position after feeding. The GRVs of the infants in both groups were recorded on the Infant Follow-up Form before the next feeding. No statistically significant difference was detected between the groups upon comparing them in terms of demographic and clinical characteristics. The body temperatures and O2 saturations of the participants in the KMC group were statistically significantly higher, and their respiratory and heart rates were lower than the SC group. The transition time to full enteral feeding was statistically significantly shorter, and FI was experienced significantly less in the KMC group infants than in the SC group (p < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of the infants' weight gain and length of hospital stay (p > 0.05). The present study demonstrated that KMC had a positive impact on FI in preterm infants. KMC is not only a safe care model providing the earliest contact between parents and infants but also a practice whose positive effect on the functioning of the digestive system in preterm infants we can use.

Influence Of Giving Kangaroo Mother Care On Body Temperature and Oxygen Saturation On Low Birth Weight

Background: Treatment of Kangaroo Methods has begun to be recommended at this time for women with low birth weight (LBW) babies because the birth of low birth weight babies both premature and dismatur is one of the biggest causes of infant death. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the kangaroo treatment method on changes in body temperature and oxygen saturation in newborn babies.Methods: The research design is a pre-experimental one group pre-and post-test conducted in the perinatology room. The population of this research is the whole LBW in the Perinatology Room of the Soedomo Trenggalek Regional General Hospital. There are 15 newborn babies who meet the inclusion criteria selected as a sample by using Purposive Sampling technique. This research uses observation sheets as instruments. Results of statistical analysis using paired t test. Results: The results showed that there was a significant effect of kangaroo mother care on changes in body temperature and oxygen saturation in newborn babies ie pre temperature obtained mean 36.20C and post temperature obtained mean 370C this shows an increase of body temperature towards normal temperature (p value = 0.000) &lt; value of α of 0.01. While the pre-saturation mean is 90% and the post-95% saturation mean, this indicates an increase in oxygen saturation towards normal (p value=0.000) &lt; value of α of 0.01. Conclusion: The kangaroo treatment method is an effective, easy and inexpensive way to care for a baby with LBW while in hospital or for home treatment. Baby's and mother's skin contact directly on the treatment of kangaroo methods can maintain the stability of body temperature and oxygen saturation. The more often the mother performs kangaroo treatment on the baby then the satability of body temperature and oxygen saturation will be more awake and this will accelerate the process of improving the condition of LBW towards better which can also improve the relationship (bonding) between mother and baby.
