Effects of Feedback on Students' Motor Skill Learning in Physical Education: A Systematic Review.

Objectives: Feedback is an essential factor that may affect students’ motor skill learning during physical education (PE) classes. This review aimed to (1) systematically examine the evidence for the effectiveness of feedback on students’ skill learning during PE classes and (2) summarize the evidence for the effects of feedback elements (i.e., format and content). Methods: A systematic search was conducted on seven electronic databases to identify studies that explored the effects of feedback on student learning during PE classes. Twenty-three studies were selected, and the study quality was evaluated using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database scale. The levels of evidence were determined with the best evidence synthesis. Results: Strong evidence indicates the effectiveness of feedback intervention on students’ skill learning compared with those who received no feedback. Limited evidence was found for the effect of visual feedback compared with verbal feedback. There were mixed results for the effectiveness of information feedback compared with praise or corrective feedback. Conclusion: The current evidence suggests that feedback is useful for skill learning during PE classes. Emergent questions still need to be addressed, such as those regarding the efficiency of using different formats and contents for feedback delivery to enhance motor skill learning during PE classes.

Analysis of Information Feedback on Residential Energy Conservation and the Implications: The Case of China

Household electricity consumption has increased significantly over the last two decades, leading to a series of policy interventions targeting to reduce electricity consumption in the residential sector. Information feedback regarding household electricity consumption is considered a cost-effective approach to promoting energy conservation. Various studies have so far covered the effects of information feedback on electricity consumption, yet the variations in both the types of feedback provided and the research methodologies have made it difficult to draw plausible conclusions. In China’s case, less due regard has been given to the effectiveness of various types of information feedback. This study has compared the effectiveness of information feedback between emailing electricity bills to households and installing smart meters in terms of promoting electricity conservation by employing empirical survey data from the Chinese General Social Survey with the help of the propensity score matching method. The results show that information provision via information bills curtails electricity consumption by around 20%, whereas information feedback via smart meters installation has no positive effects on household electricity conservation due to lack of access and knowledge to understand the displays of advanced meters. In light of the above results, the study suggests that policy-makers stress the importance of information feedback-based initiatives and improve the information feedback capacity of smart meters through training and education.

Using Feedback to Mitigate Coordination and Threshold Problems in Iterative Combinatorial Auctions

Package bids, i.e., bids on sets of items, are an essential aspect of combinatorial auctions. They can allow bidders to accurately express their preferences. However, bidders on packages consisting of few items are often unable to outbid provisionally winning bids on large packages. To resolve this, both coordination as well as cooperation are needed. Coordination, since smaller bidders need to bid on packages that are disjoint; cooperation, since typically bid increases from more than one bidder are required to overcome the threshold to outbid a larger package bid. The authors design an information system that supports the implementation of an iterative combinatorial auction; this system is specifically aimed at helping bidders overcome coordination and threshold problems. They study the effect of information feedback on the behavior of bidders in different auction settings. The authors test this in an experimental setting using human bidders, varying feedback from very basic information about provisionally winning bids/prices, to providing more advanced concepts such as winning and deadness levels, and coalitional feedback. The experiment indicates that coalitional feedback has a positive impact on economic efficiency in cases where difficult threshold problems arise; however, it appears to have an adverse effect when threshold problems are easy.

Effect of information feedback on training standing up following stroke: a pilot feasibility study

Background and objective: The ability to stand up is reduced following stroke. Traditional biofeedback is effective in improving the performance of lower limb activities. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of and potential for information feedback from a simple inexpensive device to improve the ability to stand up from a chair in people following stroke.Methods: A single-group study with pre–post measures design was used. Twenty people with hemiplegic stroke in inpatient rehabilitation received 10 sessions over 2 weeks of information feedback about foot placement during training of standing up. Progression involved increasing repetitions, increasing difficulty and fading feedback. Feasibility was determined by adherence, time taken, acceptability and safety. Clinical outcomes were the time taken to stand up, quality and foot position measured using the 5-Times-Sit-To-Stand-Test and carryover into daily activities measured by covert observation.Results: The study was feasible with 97% of sessions completed, taking 19 (SD 6) to 25 (SD 10) minutes. Participants understood (4.6/5), found useful (4.6/5), challenging (4.4/5) and would recommend (4.7/5) the training. The time to stand up 5 times decreased by 24 (95% CI -48 to -1) s, and the quality of standing improved by 1.0/10.0 (95% CI 0.2 to 1.8). Carryover of the correct foot placement occurred to real life, with the beginning foot position correct 2.1/3.0 (95% CI 1.6 to 2.6) and end foot position correct 1.8/3.0 (95% CI 1.2 to 2.4) occasions.Conclusions: The training is feasible and has the potential to improve the ability to stand up.

Information feedback and contest structure in rent-seeking games

We investigate the effects of information feedback in rent-seeking games with two different contest structures. In the share contest a contestant receives a share of the rent equal to her share of rent-seeking expenditures, while in the lottery contest a contestant wins the entire rent with probability equal to her share of rent-seeking expenditures. In share contests average expenditures converge to equilibrium levels when subjects only get feedback about own earnings, and additional feedback about rivals' choices and earnings raises average expenditures. In lottery contests information feedback has an opposite, and even stronger, effect: when subjects only get feedback on own earnings we observe high levels of rent dissipation, usually exceeding the value of the rent, and additional feedback about rivals' choices and earnings has a significant moderating influence on expenditures. In a follow-up treatment we make information feedback endogenous by allowing contestants in a lottery contest to make public or private expenditures. Subjects make the vast majority of expenditures privately and overall excess expenditures are similar to the lottery contest with own feedback.

Effect of Information Feedback on Bidder Behavior in Continuous Combinatorial Auctions

Combinatorial auctions—in which bidders can bid on combinations of goods—can increase the economic efficiency of a trade when goods have complementarities. Recent theoretical developments have lessened the computational complexity of these auctions, but the issue of cognitive complexity remains an unexplored barrier for the online marketplace. This study uses a data-driven approach to explore how bidders react to the complexity in such auctions using three experimental feedback treatments. Using cluster analyses of the bids and the clicks generated by bidders, we find three stable bidder strategies across the three treatments. Further, these strategies are robust for separate experiments using a different setup. We also benchmark the continuous auctions against an iterative form of combinatorial auction—the combinatorial clock auction. The enumeration of the bidding strategies across different types of feedback, along with the analysis of their economic implications, is offered to help practitioners design better combinatorial auction environments. The Effect of Information Feedback in Construction Bidding

 With the goal to achieve efficiency in bidding competitions, many codes of bidding procedure recommend clients provide contractors with bidding feedback information. Contractors strive to bid competitively via learning based on their experiences in past bidding attempts. The level of bidding feedback information, however, varies across clients. In many cases, clients do not provide feedback or provide insufficient feedback to contractors. Focussing on two information feedback conditions (full and partial), we examine: (i) the changes in bidding trend over time, and (ii) the effects of bidding feedback information on bidders’ competitiveness in bidding. Data were gathered using a bidding experiment that involved student (inexperienced) bidders with a construction project management background. The results show that the variations in bids over time for full information feedback condition are statistically significant, but not for bids from bidders with partial bidding feedback information. Bidders with full bidding feedback information are more competitive than those with partial bidding feedback information. The findings add to both our theoretical and empirical understanding of construction bidding: an understanding of the process of changes in the price of building work, and how the process can be manipulated through the release of bidding feedback information.

Effects of information feedback on an asymmetrical two-route scenario

In traffic system, a reasonable information feedback can improve road capacity. In this paper, we investigate an asymmetrical two-route scenario in which dynamic information can be generated and displayed on the board to guide drivers. Two improved feedbacks (i.e. improved mean velocity feedback and improved congestion coefficient feedback) are introduced. Simulations show that the average cost is dependent on the vehicle arrival rate and there exists a critical the dynamic vehicles ratio corresponding to the maximum flux. We find that improved con-gestion coefficient can better enhance the system capacity than that of improved mean velocity feedback.

Modelling the effect of information feedback on the spread of the Ebola virus

Describes the application of the tools and techniques of the system dynamics method to the complex problem of understanding the spread of the Ebola virus. The main deliverable of this research is a computer simulation model in the system dynamics tradition. The essence of system dynamics is to act as a framework for formalising mental models of a problem. In this respect, the system dynamics simulation model presented here is a theory describing the structure of, and interrelationships between, the factors which impact on an outbreak of the Ebola virus and the attempts to contain it. The model, comprising 57 interrelated variables, is structured to represent a group of rural villages served by one local hospital, remote from regional and national medical laboratories. Such a structure typifies the circumstances of recent Ebola outbreaks in central Africa.

Effects of feedback of information on clinical practice: a review.

To establish what is known about the role of feedback of statistical information in changing clinical practice. Review of 36 studies of interventions entailing the use of statistical information for audit or practice review, which used a formal research design. Papers identified from computer searches of medical and health service management publications, of which 36 describing studies of interventions designed to influence clinical care and including information feedback from clinical or administrative data systems were reviewed. Evidence for effect of information feedback on change in clinical practice. Information feedback was most likely to influence clinical practice if it was part of strategy to target decision makers who had already agreed to review their practice. A more direct effect was discernable if the information was presented close to the time of decision making. The questions of the optimum layout and quantity of information were not addressed; the 36 papers were insufficient for defining good formats for information to be used for audit or quality assurance. Given the cost of information processing and the current emphasis on closing the audit loop in the health services, it is important that the use of information in the audit process should be critically evaluated.

Effects of information feedback and pulse oximetry on the incidence of anesthesia complications.

No standard outcome measures exist to evaluate the effect of interventions intended to improve the quality of anesthesia care. The authors established a clinically practical definition of outcome, and used it to assess the effect of feedback of information about complications and the effect of pulse oximetry on the rate and severity of important anesthesia-related problems encountered in the operating room (OR) and recovery room (RR). On admission to the RR, the patient's anesthetist documented Recovery-Room-Impact Events (RRIE), defined as an "unanticipated, undesirable, possibly anesthesia-related effect that required intervention, was pertinent to recovery-room care, and did or could cause at least moderate morbidity." Following a control period with no feedback of data, intense feedback of grouped (anonymous) RRIE rates was provided. Later, pulse oximeters were introduced to all anesthetizing locations. Among 12,088 patients (71% of all RR admissions), 18% had at least one RRIE in the OR or RR. The most common RRIEs were hypotension (4.4%), arrhythmia (3.9%), hypertension (1.5%), intubation difficulties (0.8%), hypoventilation (0.8%), and hypovolemia (0.6%). Feedback of information produced no demonstrable change in the rate of RRIEs. Although significantly fewer patients experienced RRIEs (15.6% vs. 12.4%, P less than 0.0001), hypotensive RRIEs (5.2% vs. 3.8%, P = 0.0003), and hypovolemic RRIEs (0.88% vs. 0.42%, P = 0.0017) following the introduction of pulse oximetry in the OR, confounding factors prevent establishment of a cause-and-effect relationship. Quality assurance may require more direct intervention and individual feedback to be effective. Still, the RRIE measure requires minimal effort at low cost and encourages improved transmission of information at the time of admission to recovery-room care.

Effect of information feedback on temporal discrimination in concurrent and post-feedback measures.

College students estimated time intervals (5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 sec.) where one group (N = 20) received information feedback in terms of actual interval durations and a second group (N = 18) received no information. Theshold measures were then taken for all subjects using the method of constant stimuli (comparison stimuli of 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 sec. and a 7-sec. standard). In addition to increased accuracy and consistency of judgments, the feedback group showed a decreasing Weber fraction during the estimation phase, while the Weber fraction for the no-feedback group increased. The feedback group retained only a slight advantage in subsequent threshold measures; group differences in difference thresholds and derived nonparametric estimates of d' were nonsignificant.

Effect of information feedback upon intertrial consistency of time judgment

Male college students made verbal estimations of time intervals ranging from five to 80 sec on six blocks of five trials. Some subjects were given information feedback (IF) about judgment errors after each trial and the remaining subjects were given no IF. Judgments of the no-IF group changed from initial overestimations to final underestimations of the intervals across blocks of trials. Judgments of the IF group did not significantly change across blocks. In the no-IF group, each block of trials correlated strongest with immediately adjacent blocks; i.e., the correlation matrix had a superdiagonal form. Interblock correlations were weakened by IF, and the superdiagonal form was not obtained in the matrix of the IF group. Previous theories of the superdiagonal form are considered inadequate to explain these results. An alternative hypothesis, based on changing decision criteria with blocks, which IF attenuates, is proposed to explain these data.
