Computational study of hydrostatic pressure effect on MgSiO3 perovskite oxide for photocatalytic water splitting application

Despite the challenges of developing efficient photocatalysts for water splitting, we demonstrate that MgSiO3 perovskite oxide, under applied external stress, significantly enhances photocatalytic activity. The use of earth-abundant and low-cost photocatalysts for high-efficiency photocatalytic water splitting is extremely important. Using density functional (DFT) calculations, we present increased photocatalytic water splitting activity of MgSiO3 perovskite oxide by applying external stress. Our findings indicate that raising the concentrations of pressure can lower the lattice constants and volume of MgSiO3. An anisotropic elastic material with high stiffness that changes from brittle to ductile at high pressure (10–30 GPa). It is stable under various circumstances owing to its high Debye temperature, thermal conductivity, and melting temperature, all of which are thermodynamic properties. MgSiO₃ is an indirect bandgap (Γ →R) p-type semiconductor with a band gap energy is 2.627 eV at 0 GPa. However, the band gap energies increase as enhanced stress is confirmed by its electronic characteristics, making it appropriate for photocatalytic water-splitting applications. Strong anisotropy, effective light absorption, and reflective properties were revealed by optical investigations, which bode well for photocatalytic applications. Moreover, the optical conductivity suggests its potential for light amplification by showing a gain behavior in the visible light region. Crucially, because of its advantageous band-edge placements, MgSiO₃ shows great promise for photocatalytic water-splitting applications. This work paves the path for more investigation into effective water-splitting technologies by demonstrating the multidimensional properties and novel and inventive nature of MgSiO3 under high pressure, as well as by demonstrating its feasibility for a variety of photocatalytic applications.

Enhanced antioxidant activities, polyphenols, flavonoids, and free amino acid contents of Nelumbo nucifera bee pollen via high hydrostatic pressure treatment

ABSTRACT The aim of the present study was to address the effect of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) on bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity of Nelumbo nucifera (Lotus) bee pollen (LBP). The total phenolic contents (TPC) and free amino acids were determined and flavonoid composition was identified by UPLC-Triple-TOF-MS. Five analytical methods including DPPH, ABTS, reducing power, FRAP, and silver nanoparticles antioxidant capacity were used for the antioxidant activity analysis. The results revealed a significant increase in the TPC and free amino acid compositions after HHP treatment. The DPPH, ABTS, reducing power, FRAP, and AgNPAC of the extracted fractions were augmented by over 13.94, 2.9, 2.68, 85, and 2.6 times, respectively. PCA analysis showed a strong correlation between TPC, some distinct flavonoids, and antioxidant activities. These results indicated that HHP enhances the antioxidant activity of LBP via increase in amino acids, TPC, and some flavonoids such as Licoagrone, Kuwanon K, Cyanidin 3-rutinoside, etc.

A DFT study of the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the structure and electronic properties of sarcosine crystal

ContextWe perform density functional theory calculations to study the dependence of the structural and electronic properties of the amino acid sarcosine crystal structure on hydrostatic pressure application. The results are analyzed and compared with the available experimental data. Our findings indicate that the crystal structure and properties of sarcosine calculated using the Grimme dispersion-corrected PBE functional (PBE-D3) best agree with the available experimental results under hydrostatic pressure of up to 3.7 GPa. Critical structural rearrangements, such as unit cell compression, head-to-tail compression, and molecular rotations, are investigated and elucidated in the context of experimental findings. Band gap energy tuning and density of state shifts indicative of band dispersion are presented concerning the structural changes arising from the elevated pressure. The calculated properties indicate that sarcosine holds great promise for application in electronic devices that involve pressure-induced structural changes.MethodsThree widely used generalized gradient approximation functionals—PBE, PBEsol, and revPBE—are employed with Grimme’s D3 dispersion correction. The non-local van der Waals density functional vdW-DF is also evaluated. The calculations are performed using the projector-augmented wave method in the Quantum Espresso software suite. The geometry optimization results are visualized using VMD. The Multiwfn and NCIPlot programs are used for wavefunction and intermolecular interaction analyses.

Determining the effect of high hydrostatic pressure on the refrigerated stability of avocado puree

The present study aimed to extend refrigerated stability of locally grown avocado fruit by applying High Hydrostatic Pressure (HHP) treatment. HHP was applied at 600 MPa for 3 min to avocado puree and stored at 4 °C for 28 days. Physicochemical (colour CIE L*, a*, b*, total oil amount, chlorophyll, pH, moisture) and microbiological (mesophilic, yeast-mould) analyses were performed at seven-day intervals on both control (untreated) and HHP-treated sample packs. It could be judged that HHP treatment effectively controlled the colour indices, preventing undesired changes during the cold storage period of avocado puree. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that HHP-processed avocado puree exhibited stability for 28 days compared to unprocessed puree at 4 °C. The shelf-life stability of avocado puree under chilled conditions was extended from 7 to 28 days.Graphical

Effects of hydrostatic pressure, osmotic pressure, and confinement on extracellular matrix associated responses in the nucleus pulposus cells ex vivo

Spinal movement in both upright and recumbent positions generates changes in physicochemical stresses including hydrostatic pressure (HP), deviatoric stress, and confinement within the intradiscal compartment. The nucleus pulposus (NP) of the intervertebral disc is composed of highly negatively charged extracellular matrix (ECM), which increases osmotic pressure (OP) and generates tissue swelling. In pursuing regenerative therapies for intervertebral disc degeneration, the effects of HP on the cellular responses of NP cells and the ECM environment remain incompletely understood. We hypothesized that anabolic turnover of ECM in NP tissue is maintained under HP and confinement. We first clarified the effects of the relationships among HP, OP, and confinement on swelling NP explants isolated from bovine caudal intervertebral discs over 12 hours. We found that the application of confinement and constant HP significantly inhibits the free swelling of NP (p < 0.01) and helps retain the sulfated glycosaminoglycan. Since confinement and HP inhibited swelling, we incubated confined NPs under HP in high-osmolality medium mimicking ECM-associated OP for 7 days and demonstrated the effects of HP on metabolic turnover of ECM molecules in NP cells. The aggrecan core protein gene was significantly upregulated under confinement and constant HP compared to confinement and no HP (p < 0.01). We also found that confinement and constant HP helped to significantly retain smaller cell area (p < 0.01) and significantly prevent the severing of actin filaments compared to no confinement and HP (p < 0.01). Thus, we suggest that NP's metabolic turnover and cellular responses are regulated by the configuration of intracellular actin and fibrillar ECMs under HP.

Simulation of the pulsed streamer discharge in water considering the effect of hydrostatic pressure

Streamer discharge is a very complex multi-scale and multi-physics coupling process, and there is no accurate model that can describe its development. In this paper, a two-dimensional axisymmetric fluid model is established in COMSOL to simulate and study the effects of the applied voltage amplitude, the discharge gap distance, the rising edge of pulse voltage, and hydrostatic pressure on the development of the positive streamer discharge at a needle-plate electrode in water under a nanosecond pulse voltage. The results show that increasing the voltage amplitude, decreasing the pulse rise time, and narrowing the discharge gap all increase the electric field strength of the streamer, thereby affecting the electron density of the plasma channel, among which changing the discharge gap has the greatest effect on the electron density. And under the gap of 3 mm, the peak electron density can reach 3.76 × 1023 m−3; if the discharge gap is narrowed to 1 mm, the peak electron density is reduced to 1.20 × 1023 m−3. In addition, hydrostatic pressure and water molecule spacing are closely linked. Increasing the hydrostatic pressure decreases the electric field strength and the peak electron density in the plasma channel, and its effect on the peak electron density saturates with increasing hydrostatic pressure.

Dynamic/static pressure-induced copolymerization and property changes of lotus seed starch with chlorogenic acid

Pressure promotes the formation of starch-polyphenol complexes, but their classification and properties are still unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of dynamic high-pressure homogenization (10–50 MPa) and static hydrostatic pressure (100–500 MPa) on the copolymerization behavior and properties of lotus seed starch (LS)–endogenous polyphenol chlorogenic acid (CA) complexes. The results showed that both pressures induced LS–CA to form stable inclusion-type complexes and easily destructible noninclusion-type complexes. Increased pressure promoted the formation of inclusion-type complexes, with dynamic pressure having a particularly strong effect. However, noninclusion-type complexes began breaking down at 20 MPa under dynamic pressure and 300 MPa under static pressure. Inclusion-type complexes primarily improve starch ordering, and noninclusion-type complexes enhance water holding capacity, but excessive proportions of either type affect pasting performance. These findings offer insights into transforming specific starch structures through small molecular components and provide a theoretical basis for controlling functional starch product processing.

Perioperative and postoperative effects of hydrostatic pressure applied to the dura mater on central nervous system in unilateral biportal endoscopic spine surgery.

To evaluate the changes in optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) caused by this pressure applied to the dura mater and postoperative complications. The study was conducted between 01.01.2022 and 01.06.2022 at Private Medicabil Hospital. The ONSD was measured 3mm behind the eyeball using US at 5 time points: T1 (in the supine position after anesthesia induction), T2 (after conversion to the prone position), T3 (in the prone position after applying pressure to the dura mater), T4 (in the prone position after the discontinuation of applying pressure to the dura mater), T5 (after conversion to the supine position). Postoperative complications were recorded. The ONSD at T3 was higher than those at all time points. For an ONSD value >5.3mm, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive, and negative predictive values were 87.5%, 71.9%, 50.9%, and 94.5%, respectively (Area under the curve 0.830, 95% Confidence Interval: 0.761-0.899, p<0.001) CONCLUSION: We think that the hydrostatic pressure applied to the dura mater in unilateral biportal endoscopic (UBE) surgeries causes changes in the ONSD sheath diameter and that monitoring ONSD with peroperative USG can reduce the possible complications in order to reduce the effects of this pressure on the central nervous system.

Analysis of Copper Welding Parameters during the Manufacture of Tubular Profiles Using Unconventional Extrusion Processes.

In recent years, there has been a lack of information in the literature regarding the extrusion and connection of closed profiles from oxygen-free copper in bridge dies. Available studies contain information on the processes of extrusion and connection of profiles from aluminium alloys and various types of steel. However, there is a lack of detailed data on the values of technological parameters for which copper is joined in the extrusion process. Therefore, one of the goals of this work is to fill the gap in the literature regarding the extrusion of oxygen-free copper in bridge dies. In this work, the authors determined the thermo-mechanical conditions at which oxygen-free copper will be joined. This paper describes the effects of charge temperature and hydrostatic pressure in the weld zone of a bridge die on copper bonding in the fabrication of tubular profiles. Physical tests of the welding process under the conditions of upsetting a material consisting of two parts were carried out using the Gleeble 3800 metallurgical process simulator with the PocketJaw module in the standard configuration for SICO (strain-induced crack opening) tests. For the numerical simulations, the commercial computer programme FORGE®NxT 2.1. using the finite element method (FEM) was used. Based on the analysis of the test results obtained, it was found that complete material bonding during the extrusion process could be achieved for a charge temperature higher than 600 °C and a hydrostatic pressure of 45-65 MPa.

The effect of hydrostatic pressure on invasive coronary pressure measurements: Comparison with [15O]H2O-positron emission tomography flow data.

Fractional flow reserve (FFR) has emerged as the invasive gold standard for assessing vessel-specific ischemia. However, FFR measurements are influenced by the hydrostatic effect, which might adversely impact the assessment of ischemia. This study aimed to investigate the impact of hydrostatic pressure on FFR measurements by correcting for the height and comparing FFR with [15O]H2O positron emission tomography (PET)-derived relative flow reserve (RFR). The 206 patients were included in this analysis. Patients underwent coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA), [15O]H2O PET, and invasive coronary angiography with routine FFR in every epicardial artery. Height differences between the aortic guiding catheter and distal pressure sensor were quantified on CCTA images. An FFR ≤ 0.80 was considered significant. The study found a reclassification in 7% of the coronary arteries. Notably, 11% of left anterior descending (LAD) arteries were reclassified from hemodynamically significant to nonsignificant. Conversely, 6% of left circumflex (Cx) arteries were reclassified from nonsignificant to significant. After correcting for the hydrostatic pressure effect, the correlation between FFR and PET-derived RFR increased significantly from r = 0.720 to r = 0.786 (p = 0.009). The average magnitude of correction was +0.05 FFR units in the LAD, -0.03 in the Cx, and -0.02 in the right coronary artery. Hydrostatic pressure has a small but clinically relevant influence on FFR measurements obtained with a pressure wire. Correcting for this hydrostatic error significantly enhances the correlation between FFR and PET-derived RFR.

A CO-HSDT isogeometric analysis for free vibration of matrix cracked FG-GPLRC plates coupled with stationary fluid

This paper for the first time proposes an efficiently C0-higer order shear deformation theory (HSDT) and isogeometric analysis (IGA) for the free vibration analysis of matrix cracked functionally graphene nanoplatelets reinforced composite (FG-GPLRC) plate coupled with stationary fluid. This case represents essential components of sophisticated structures utilized in industries such as shipbuilding, nuclear, marine, and naval. The properties of the four GPLs distributions of FG-GPLRC are evaluated by using a combination of the modified Halpin-Tsai micromechanics model and the rule of mixtures, while the degraded stiffness of cracked layers is predicted by the self-consistent micromechanical (SCM) model. The fluid is assumed to be homogeneous, inviscid, incompressible and irrotational, so the free-surface waves and hydrostatic pressure effects on structures are neglected. The governing equation of motion is derived by the Hamilton's principle, where three different fluid-plate interaction systems are taken into consideration. After validating the proposed method against existing literature, the effect of various parameters such as crack density, interaction boundary conditions (IBC), fluid level, GPLs distribution pattern, total number of layers, and geometric parameter on the free vibration of matrix cracked FG-GPLRC plate are investigated. It is believed that the finding in this paper may be helpful for the accurate design and analysis of matrix cracked FG-GPLRC plate submerged in fluid.

The Effect of High Hydrostatic Pressure (HHP) Induction Parameters on the Formation and Properties of Inulin-Soy Protein Hydrogels.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) induction parameters on the formation and properties of inulin-soy protein hydrogels. Solutions containing 20 g/100 g of inulin and 3 or 6 g/100 g of soy protein isolate (3 SPI; 6 SPI) were subjected to HHPs of 150, 300, or 500 MPa for 5, 10, or 20 min. The HHP parameters had no significant impact on the effectiveness of hydrogel formation. In most cases, the time of solution pressurization had no significant effect on the characteristics of hydrogels. However, increasing the induction pressure from 150 to 300 MPa resulted in hydrogels with different characteristics being obtained, e.g., more flattened microstructure; higher stability (only 3 SPI); higher yield stress, firmness, and adhesiveness; and lower spreadability. These changes were more noticeable in the hydrogels with lower protein content. An increase in the induction pressure (to 500 MPa) did not result in a significant strengthening of the hydrogel structure. However, in the case of 6 SPI hydrogels, induction with a pressure of 500 MPa had an unfavorable effect on their stability. The results indicate that HHP (300 MPa) can be used as an effective method for strengthening the structure of inulin-protein hydrogels.

Numerical prediction of beam capacity using the new constitutive model based on concrete biaxial behavior

The biaxial strength of concrete exhibits intriguing nonlinearity and scattering, posing challenges to the assessment of building structural safety. Experiments have confirmed that biaxial strength envelopes can manifest concave, quasi-linear, and convex shapes. Despite various empirical formulas being proposed to describe this behavior, they cannot be applied to finite element simulations due to the absence of a constitutive perspective. To study the mechanisms forming the shape of strength envelopes, a novel three-invariant model constitutive model is proposed, which reveals the characteristics of the envelopes resulting from the coupling effect of hydrostatic pressure and Lode angle. By adjusting the model parameters, it effectively describes concave, quasi-linear, and convex envelopes. The model's accuracy and compatibility were validated against experimental data spanning various concrete types, with compression strengths ranging from 19.29 to 96.5 MPa and tension-compression ratios form 0.056 to 0.095. To investigate how biaxial strength impacts the capacity of beams, numerical experiments were conducted on notched and intact beams based on the proposed model. The results underscored that beams prepared using concrete with convex envelopes exhibited higher capacity compared to those with quasi-linear envelopes. Therefore, conducting biaxial tension-compression experiments is recommended to accurately evaluate beam bearing capacity. The proposed model is expected to have further applications in the safety evaluation of building structures.

Pressure tuning of the Se-substituted BiS2-based superconductor LaO0.5F0.5Bi(S1−xSex)2

Abstract We report the effect of hydrostatic pressure on LaO0.5F0.5Bi(S 1 − x Se x )2 with chemical pressure applied to a conducting layer by means of electrical resistivity and ac-magnetic susceptibility measurements up to 2.5 GPa. We confirmed the bulk superconductive nature of the low superconducting (low-SC) and high superconducting (high-SC) phase using ac-magnetic susceptibility under hydrostatic pressure. The T c of the high-SC phase was observed to decrease with an increase in the Se substitution. The critical pressure P c shifted toward the higher P and the P-induced transition broadened with an increase in the Se content. The T c of the low-SC phase can be expressed by assuming an applied hydrostatic pressure of 0.75 GPa as the Se substitution of x = 0.1. The broad P c transition is likely to be ascribed to the inhomogeneity of the Se substitution.

Buckling and vibro-acoustic behavior analysis of laminated immersed cylindrical shells with hydrostatic pressure based on Chebyshev-Fourier spectral approach

The buckling and vibroacoustic behaviour of laminated cylindrical shell structures is vital for the safety and operational efficiency of underwater vehicles. This paper introduces a Chebyshev-Fourier spectral approach for the comprehensive analysis of buckling and vibro-acoustic behaviour in water-immersed laminated cylindrical shells under external hydrostatic pressure. The approach combines Chebyshev polynomials and Fourier series to approximate the displacement of shell and acoustic pressure of the fluid-structure-interaction (FSI) surface in cylindrical coordinates. An approximate solution is used in the axial direction, while an analytical solution is used in the circumferential direction, allowing for the analysis of different circumferential wave numbers n. The influence of external fluid pressure is characterized through the Helmholtz boundary integral equation, while the effect of hydrostatic pressure is deduced using linear elastic theory. From a theoretical derivation standpoint, hydrostatic pressure leads to a reduction in equivalent stiffness, while the external fluid contributes to an increase in the effective mass matrix. Validated against established literature analysis, the study finds that hydrostatic pressure decreases the natural frequencies, though the impact is less significant for lower circumferential wave numbers. For these lower wave numbers, the overall radiated sound power remains largely independent of external hydrostatic pressure, regardless of being in air or water. However, at higher circumferential wave numbers, the effect is more pronounced. This study not only advances the theoretical framework for analysing submerged cylindrical shells but also provides crucial insights into designing more robust structures for underwater applications.

A theoretical analysis of the effect of hydrostatic pressure on cerium oxide for renewable energy applications

The characteristics of cubic cerium oxide (CeO2) have been investigated using density functional theory (DFT) using the PBE-GGA exchange–correlation functional. This study mainly focused on the structural, elastic, and optoelectronic properties of the CeO2 under the application of external hydrostatic pressure. It is observed that lattice constants and volume tend to decrease with increasing pressure. Based on the observed trends in lattice constants variations, CeO2 exhibits compressibility at high-pressure conditions, although it remains structurally unchanged throughout the pressure range of 0 to 100 GPa. Applying pressure within the range of 0 to 100 GPa reveals a distinct characteristic associated with the emergence of electronic bandgap opening. The material displays an indirect energy bandgap, with its magnitude increasing from 2.659 eV to 4.055 eV under rising pressure. To deeply understand the impact of external pressure on the optical behaviour of CeO2, extensive investigation has been conducted on several optical parameters such as the dielectric function, refractive index, optical reflectivity, absorption coefficient, optical conductivity, and loss function throughout the energy range up to 50 eV. However, there is a tendency for optical parameters to show sharpening peaks that shift somewhat towards higher energies. Furthermore, we have also tested the impact of bandgap modulation induced in CeO2 by proposing a CsSnBr3-based solar cell with the One-Dimensional Solar Cell Capacitance Simulator software. Based on our findings, the use of cubic cerium oxide may find its potential to enhance the performance of optoelectronic and renewable energy devices.

Hydrostatic Pressure as a Tool for the Study of Semiconductor Properties-An Example of III-V Nitrides.

Using the example of III-V nitrides crystallizing in a wurtzite structure (GaN, AlN, and InN), this review presents the special role of hydrostatic pressure in studying semiconductor properties. Starting with a brief description of high-pressure techniques for growing bulk crystals of nitride compounds, we focus on the use of hydrostatic pressure techniques in both experimental and theoretical investigations of the special properties of nitride compounds, their alloys, and quantum structures. The bandgap pressure coefficient is one of the most important parameters in semiconductor physics. Trends in its behavior in nitride structures, together with trends in pressure-induced phase transitions, are discussed in the context of the behavior of other typical semiconductors. Using InN as an example, the pressure-dependent effects typical of very narrow bandgap materials, such as conduction band filling or effective mass behavior, are described. Interesting aspects of bandgap bowing in In-containing nitride alloys, including pressure and clustering effects, are discussed. Hydrostatic pressure also plays an important role in the study of native defects and impurities, as illustrated by the example of nitride compounds and their quantum structures. Experiments and theoretical studies on this topic are reviewed. Special attention is given to hydrostatic pressure and strain effects in short periods of nitride superlattices. The explanation of the discrepancies between theory and experiment in optical emission and its pressure dependence from InN/GaN superlattices led to the well-documented conclusion that InN growth on the GaN substrate is not possible. The built-in electric field present in InGaN/GaN and AlGaN/GaN heterostructures crystallizing in a wurtzite lattice can reach several MV/cm, leading to drastic changes in the physical properties of these structures and related devices. It is shown how hydrostatic pressure modifies these effects and helps to understand their origin.

The independent effects of hydrostatic pressure and hypercapnic breathing during water immersion on ventilatory sensitivity and cerebrovascular reactivity.

Head-out water immersion (HOWI) induces ventilatory and hemodynamic changes, which may be a result of hydrostatic pressure, augmented arterial CO2 tension, or a combination of both. We hypothesized that the hydrostatic pressure and elevated CO2 tension that occur during HOWI will contribute to an augmented ventilatory sensitivity to CO2 and an attenuated cerebrovascular reactivity to CO2 during water immersion. Twelve subjects [age: 24 ± 3 yr, body mass index (BMI): 25 ± 3 kg/m2] completed HOWI, waist water immersion with CO2 (WWI + CO2), and WWI, where a rebreathing test was conducted at baseline, 10, 30, and 60 min, and postimmersion. End-tidal pressure of carbon dioxide ([Formula: see text]), minute ventilation, expired gases, blood pressure, heart rate, and middle cerebral artery blood velocity were recorded continuously. [Formula: see text] increased throughout all visits (P ≤ 0.011), was similar during HOWI and WWI + CO2 (P ≥ 0.264), and was greater during WWI + CO2 versus WWI at 10, 30, and 60 min (P < 0.001). When HOWI vs. WWI + CO2 were compared, the change in ventilatory sensitivity to CO2 was different at 10 (0.59 ± 0.34 vs. 0.06 ± 0.23 L/min/mmHg; P < 0.001), 30 (0.58 ± 0.46 vs. 0.15 ± 0.25 L/min/mmHg; P < 0.001), and 60 min (0.63 ± 0.45 vs. 0.16 ± 0.34 L/min/mmHg; P < 0.001), whereas there were no differences between conditions for cerebrovascular reactivity to CO2 (P ≥ 0.163). When WWI + CO2 versus WWI were compared, ventilatory sensitivity to CO2 was not different between conditions (P ≥ 0.642), whereas the change in cerebrovascular reactivity to CO2 was different at 30 min (-0.56 ± 0.38 vs. -0.30 ± 0.25 cm/s/mmHg; P = 0.010). These data indicate that during HOWI, ventilatory sensitivity to CO2 increases due to the hydrostatic pressure, whereas cerebrovascular reactivity to CO2 decreases due to the combined effects of immersion.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Although not fully elucidated, the ventilatory and hemodynamic alterations during water immersion appear to be a result of the combined effects of immersion (i.e., elevated [Formula: see text], central hypervolemia, increased cerebral perfusion, increased work of breathing, etc.). Our findings demonstrate that an augmented ventilatory sensitivity to CO2 during immersion may be due to the hydrostatic pressure across the chest wall, whereas an attenuated cerebrovascular reactivity to CO2 may be due to the combined effects of immersion.

Optical properties of a quantum dot confined in inverse square root truncated exponential potential under varied conditions of temperature, hydrostatic pressure, and electric/magnetic fields

In this study, we comprehensively investigate the effects of temperature, hydrostatic pressure, linear electric, and uniform magnetic fields on the electronic and optical properties of a quantum dot confined by an inverse square root truncated exponential potential. The bound state energy eigenvalues and corresponding normalized wave functions are calculated through the numerical solution of the Schrödinger equation using the Numerov method. We formulate the effective potential, which depicts the interaction of an electron with semiconductor atoms, as a function of external parameters, including temperature, hydrostatic pressure, and electric/magnetic fields. We elucidate how variations in the effective potential, induced by changes in these external parameters, affect electronic and optical observables.

Combined effects of high hydrostatic pressure and pulsed electric fields on quinoa starch: Analysis of microstructure, morphology, thermal, and pasting properties

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of non-thermal methods, using high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) and pulsed electric field (PEF), on the dual modification of quinoa starch and to analyze the microstructural, morphological, thermal, pasting, and texture properties. Starch was treated with HHP at 400 MPa for 10 min, while PEF was applied using voltages of 10 and 30 kV cm−1 for a total time of 90s. The modification techniques were effective in breaking down amylose molecules and amylopectin branches, where for the dual treatment, higher values of DP6–12 were found. The average diameter and gelatinization temperatures were elevated after HHP, thus forming clusters that require more energy for paste formation. The use of 30 kV cm−1 and 400 MPa (HP30) in starch facilitates the creation of new food products with better texture, stability and nutritional value, making them suitable for use in food emulsions and the cosmetics industry.
