Military personnel were adversely affected by the heat stress of 2016 El Ni ñ o phenomenon, which increases the risk of heatstroke. This study was to investigate the effect of mobile fan-cooling on physiological responses during recovery from prolonged walking in the heat. In a crossover trial, 12 male Military Reserve Officer Training Unit (ROTU) cadets (21.5 ± 1.0 years old, height 1.7 ± 0.1 m, bodyweight 62.2 ± 6.7 kg) walked on a motorised treadmill for one hour at 4 km.h −1 in a warm, humid environment (30 °C, 70% relative humidity), before randomly assigned to a fan cooling (FC) trial or passive cooling (PC) trial. No significant differences were found in heart rate, rating of perceived exertion and thermal comfort during the recovery phase between the FC and PC trials, following prolonged walking in the heat. However, there was a significant time and trial interaction effect in the tympanic temperature of the participants across the recovery phase, between the two trials ( p < 0.05). In the FC trial, the tympanic temperature was significantly lower ( p < 0.05) compared to the PC trial after the 20 min recovery period. Mobile fan-cooling significantly reduces the tympanic temperature during recovery following prolonged walking in the heat.
