The impact of entrepreneurship on economic growth: GEM data analysis

Purpose - Since the last decade of the 20th Century, the relation between entrepreneurship and economic performance have been discussed and empirically examined by various studies. Although the importance of the impact of entrepreneurship on economic performance have been studied empirically exclusively at the firm and industry level, country level contributions are rather short. Taking this deficiency into account, the aim of this study is to examine investigate the impact of entrepreneurial activities on economic growth at country level. Methodology - The empirical analysis of the study is modelled by consolidating entrepreneurship as an intermediate variable to the CobbDouglas growth model beside the basic variables of labour, gross capital formation, and gross domestic product per capita. The data of 35 countries covering 2006-2015 period is used in the study and the data is collected from OECD and Global Entrepreneurship Research Association databases. Findings - The results of the study produce that although the changes in the entrepreneurial variables don't effect economic growth immediately, they present a significant and positive effect in the long run. Conclusion - As the effect of entrepreneurial activities on economic growth come out in the long run, policies for entrepreneurship should be planned on a long-term basis.

Research on Entrepreneurship – Forms of Entrepreneurship

The aim of this article is to present suggestions for future directions of research on entrepreneurship, with particular emphasis on different forms of entrepreneurship. The suggestions are preceded by a brief review of research on entrepreneurship. The article is theoretical in nature and does not present any own research, although its content is based on multiple years of experience in studying this phenomenon. The forms of entrepreneurship are discussed in terms of relationship with business, the methods of organization, the ownership of capital, the effect of entrepreneurial activities, phases of entrepreneurial activities and persons conducting business. The need to consider forms of entrepreneurship during research in such topic areas as governance methods and strategy selection, entrepreneurial motivation, innovations or the effects of entrepreneurial activity was pointed out.

Factors Influencing the Identification of Sustainable Opportunities by SMEs: Empirical Evidence from Zambia

This study uses the model of Patzelt and Shepherd (2011) to examine the factors influencing the identification of sustainable opportunities among SMEs in a developing country, Zambia. The factors under investigation include knowledge of the natural/social environment, perception of threats to the natural/social environment, altruism towards others and entrepreneurial knowledge. We interviewed 220 owner-managers in the trading and service sector who supply goods and services to the mining industry in Zambia. We found that altruism towards others was partially supported by our empirical results while the positive effects of knowledge of the natural/social environment and perception of threats to the natural/social environment on the identification of sustainable opportunities were not supported. Contrary to our expectations, entrepreneurial knowledge does not positively moderate the relationship between explanatory variables and the identification of sustainable opportunities. In sum, we found only limited empirical support for the model of Patzelt and Shepherd (2011) concerning the identification of sustainable opportunities. Our findings contribute to literature on entrepreneurship and sustainable opportunity identification by showing what factors influence the identification of sustainable opportunities. This can help us to create awareness among entrepreneurs regarding the effects of entrepreneurial activities on the environment and society; consequently, stimulating entrepreneurs to identify sustainable opportunities.

Is entrepreneurship inherited? A study of intergenerational social mobility in Mexico

The 2006 ESRU Survey on Social Mobility in Mexico is used to identify determinants of the decision to become an entrepreneur and analyze entrepreneurs’ intergenerational (i.e., respondents-parents) household wealth mobility. Entrepreneurs are distinguished from own-account workers. First, we find that entrepreneurship is strongly determined by the father being an entrepreneur and not necessarily by the individual’s initial wealth or educational attainment. Second, the mean ef fect of entrepreneurial activity on individual income is positive and greater for those whose parents belonged to the extreme ends of the socioeconomic distribution. Third, it is more likely for entrepreneurs to experience greater upward wealth mobility than non-entrepreneurs.

Mediating role of research and development on entrepreneurial activities and growth

Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to investigate to what extent the level of human development affects the relationships between entrepreneurial activities (EAs) and total factor productivity (TFP). The paper's objectives are threefold. First, it seeks to examine the effect of EA on TFP. Second, it attempts to test for the moderating effect of human development on the relation between EA and TFP, using the generalized methods of moments (GMM), in a panel data across two groups of countries based on their human development index during the period 2000-2008. Third, it tests the causality between TFP, EA, research and development (R&D), unemployment and inflation across countries.Design/methodology/approach– Cross-countries study using a panel GMM for two groups of countries based on their human development index during the period 2000-2008.Findings– Empirical evidence provides that EA have a positive significant relation across countries on TFP in the higher human development levels. The outcomes point toward the role of policies supporting EA as a vital tool to accelerate development and growth via channels such as: better education levels, enhancing R&D, creating more jobs, and stable monetary policy.Research limitations/implications– From the paper limitation is it focusses only on very high human and high human development countries and not studying medium and low-development countries but this limitation is refereed to source of the entrepreneurship data.Practical implications– This paper provides a comparative analysis of the empirical results and presents prospective explanations for the observed relationships between different groups of countries to study the dynamics of change with relative short time series.Originality/value– The study is of value for policy makers of the important relation between levels of development among countries as engine to growth via EA. Moreover, the findings provide a set of policies for governments to undertake tenable actions to accelerate the effectiveness of the institutional setting.

Employing survey data and fieldwork from the Republic of Komi, this article demonstrates that sources of stratification such as food sales, land expansion and household business, that have a significant effect in regions favourable to agricultural production, do not have a similar impact on household stratification in this forested region. The differing effects of entrepreneurial activity in Komi may be attributed to the household employment structure in which agricultural employment is a minority. As a result, the primary source of stratification is employment income, not entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurship, knowledge integration capability, and firm performance: An empirical study

From the knowledge-based view, an organization is considered an entity that integrates and distributes knowledge to produce products and services. Knowledge is acknowledged as a sustainable basis of competitive advantage that many organizations possess. Entrepreneurial activity also has been viewed as an essential feature for organizations to survive and prosper in today's turbulent environment. In this study, we explore the effect of entrepreneurship on organizational performance through knowledge integration capability. Our research model depicts the firm as a knowledge integration institution that produces its offerings through specialized knowledge integration capability that consists of learning culture, knowledge management process, and information technology capability. The results show a strong support for the relationship between entrepreneurship and knowledge integration capability. We also found that the effect of entrepreneurial activities on firm performance was mediated by knowledge integration capability.

The Effect of Entrepreneurial Activity on National Economic Growth

Entrepreneurial activity is generally assumed to be an important aspect of the organization of industries most conducive to innovative activity and unrestrained competition. This paper investigates whether total entrepreneurial activity (TEA) influences GDP growth for a sample of 36 countries. We test whether this influence depends on the level of economic development measured as GDP per capita. Adjustment is made for a range of alternative explanations for achieving economic growth by incorporating the Growth Competitiveness Index (GCI). We find that entrepreneurial activity by nascent entrepreneurs and owner/managers of young businesses affects economic growth, but that this effect depends upon the level of per capita income. This suggests that entrepreneurship plays a different role in countries in different stages of economic development.
