The Caries Impacts and Experiences Questionnaire for Children (CARIES-QC) assess children's effects of dental caries on their quality of life. This study aimed to determine the scale's Turkish version (CARIES-QC/T) validity and reliability according to age groups and to create the scale that is specific to selected age groups. Children were divided up into 3 age groups (5-7, 8-10 and 11-14 ages). Explanatory factor analysis (EFA) was used in the concept validation process. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used for cross-cultural validity. For each group, test-retest analyses were performed on 20 children. Inter-question correlation and Cronbach's alpha were used to examine internal consistency. A total of 360 children (mean age; 9.04, 56.1% girls,) 120 children in each group, participated in the study. Questions 7 and 12 for the 5-7 age group, Questions 4 and 7 for the 8-10 and 11-14 age groups were excluded from the analysis (according to EFA results; factor loads < 0.30). Three modified CARIES-QC/T scales structures with a total of 10 questions were developed for the age groups of 5-7, 8-10, and 11-14. Some questions on the Caries-QC/T scale should be eliminated, it was found when it was evaluated for age specificity. Although the results of the Caries-QC scale studies to be carried out in different societies and age groups vary, the high sample size in this study and the statistically strong results showed that the Caries-QC/T scale forms that we adapted could be used by the specified age groups.

Effectiveness of fluoride varnishes on oral health: A systematic review

Background: Professionally topical fluoride such as fluoride varnish was approved for preventing and remineralizing dental caries in primary and permanent dentitions. As such, fluoride varnish occupies a privileged place since it is the only topical fluoride for professional use applicable for children under 6 years of age, due to its simplicity, speed, rapidity and safety of use. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of professional fluoride varnish in preventing and managing dental caries in primary teeth. Method: A systematic search of publications from 2013 to 2020 was conducted using 3 databases: PubMed, Cochrane Library and Web of Science. The key words used were “fluoride varnish, children, prevention, remineralization and early childhood caries”. Reviews, non-English articles, and irrelevant studies were excluded. Results: in this article, a total of 08 reports were retained: 4 systematic reviews and 4 trials were included in this review. Three reports investigated the preventive effect on primary teeth using fluoride varnish: 2 comparing fluoride varnish with no treatment and 1 comparing fluoride varnish with standard health program. Two trials investigated the managing effect of dental caries on primary teeth comparing fluoride varnish with standard health program. 1 review reported an arresting effect on dentine caries using silver diamine fluoride. 4 Meta-analysis were performed using 5% Sodium fluoride varnish, to prevent and manage caries, and the preventive fraction ranged from 23% to 70%; highest percentage of 69.9% preventive fraction was observed. Conclusion: The effectiveness of fluoride varnish for the prevention of dental caries was proved, however it depended on the individual caries risk, the area of living of the child and if it is used in complement with a standard health program. On the other hand, the effectiveness of fluoride varnish for the management of dental caries depended on the localization of dental caries.

Estimating the Effects of Dental Caries and Its Restorative Treatment on Periodontal Inflammatory and Oxidative Status: A Short Controlled Longitudinal Study.

Dental caries and periodontitis are among the most common health conditions that are currently recognized as growing socio-economic problems relating to their increasing prevalence, negative socio-economic impact, and harmful effects on systemic health. So far, the exact effects of caries and standard restorative materials on periodontal inflammatory and oxidative status are not established. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of caries and its restoration using standard temporary and permanent filling materials on a panel of 16 inflammatory and oxidative markers in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of periodontally healthy individuals, 7 (D7) and 30 (D30) days post-restoration, while the intact teeth represented the control. One hundred ninety systemically and periodontally healthy patients with occlusal caries underwent standard cavity preparation and restorations with one of six standard temporary or permanent restorative material according to indication and randomization scheme. Interleukin (IL)-2, IFN- γ, IL-12, IL-17A, IL-13, IL-9, IL-10, IL-6, IL-5, IL-4, IL-22, TNF-α, IL1- β, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, superoxide dismutase, and reduced form of glutathione were measured in GCF samples by flowcytometry and spectrophotometry in aid of commercial diagnostic assays. Caries affected teeth exhibited significantly increased IL-1 β, IL-17, IL-22, and TBARS and decreased IL-9 concentrations compared to healthy controls. Treatment generally resulted in an increased antioxidant capacity with exception of zinc-polycarboxylate cement showing distinctive inflammatory pattern. Comparison of inflammatory and oxidative profiles in temporary and permanent restorations showed material-specific patterning which was particularly expressed in temporary materials plausibly related to greater caries extension. Caries affected teeth exhibited a balanced inflammatory pattern in GCF, with a general tendency of homeostatic re-establishment following treatment. Restorative materials did not provide specific pathological effects, although some material groups did exhibit significantly elevated levels of inflammatory and oxidative markers compared to healthy controls, while the material-specific patterning was observed as well.

The effect of dental caries and restorative biomaterials on IL-1 β and TNF-α levels in the gingival crevicular fluid

Background/Aim. In the spirit of personalized medicine, determining caries biomarkers in the saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) attracts great attention in the current dental re-search. The concentration of GCF cytokines is illustrative in depicting the processes in tooth structures. Their relevance must be inspected with aspects of tooth position and caries lesion level. Different impacts of dental restoration materials on GCF IL-1? and TNF-? could be used as a parameter for estimating local inflammation. This paper aimed to estimate the concentrations of the proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1? and TNF-?) in the GCF and to correlate them with caries extension, tooth position, and different restorative biomaterials. Methods. GCF samples were collected from 90 periodontally healthy patients demonstrating at least one tooth with proximal caries and one intact tooth, at the baseline, 7 and 30-days post-treatment. The biomarkers? profile was investigated in relation to different levels of caries extension (superficial, pulpitis, gangrenous, root affection), defect size, and restorative biomaterial. Results. Before therapy, caries level was significantly associated with GCF IL-1? concentration, demonstrating the lowest level in gangrenous (C4) and superficial caries (C2). Thirty days after therapy, root affection (C5) was characterized by the highest IL-1? concentration. Different dental fillings showed various GCF cytokine changes. CPC induced a significant IL-1? increase in more than 70% of treated patients. Caries lesion size was insignificantly associated with GCF levels of these proinflammatory cytokines, where larger defects were followed by an average cytokine increase. Considering the tooth position be-fore therapy, IL-1? had the highest level in GCF samples from caries-affected canines and second molars, while TNF-? showed the highest levels from canines GCF. Dental restoration induced cytokine increase in canines (IL-1? and TNF-?), 1st and 2nd molars GCF (IL-1?). Conclusion. Inflammation intensity of tooth structures was directly reflected in IL-1? and TNF-? concentrations. Dental restoration significantly affects IL-1? and TNF-? levels, depending on the used dental filling-type material. The profile of these cytokines varied in GCF samples of the tooth with different anatomical positions, where canines and molars demonstrated the highest level. An increase of these proinflammatory cytokines in the absence of any symptomatic manifestation of the inflammatory response can be considered as a possible tooth reparation parameter.

Is dental caries associated with lower respiratory tract infections?

Design This study comprised an analysis of data from a cohort, born in the Finnish city of Espoo between January 1 1984 and March 31 1990.Objectives The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of dental caries on the risk of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) in participants aged 20-27, using data collected during the 20-year follow-up conducted in 2010-2011.Data Dental caries experience was determined by asking study participants 'Estimate, how many teeth with a filling you have?' LRTI was defined as at least one occurrence in the 12 months prior to the administration of the 20-year questionnaire. LTRI data were obtained by asking participants if they had suffered from influenza or pneumonia, bronchitis, bronchiolitis or unspecified lower respiratory tract infection. In addition, data were obtained from the National Hospital Discharge Register. Risk ratios were determined using Poisson regression models.Results Having a high number of filled teeth was associated with an increased number of LRTIs (adjusted relative risk 1.24) and was not modified by the family's socioeconomic status or by smoking.Conclusions The authors suggest that dental caries increases the risk of LRTIs, but concede that common risk factors might explain at least partly the observed relation between filled teeth and LRTIs.

Effect of dental caries and socioeconomic status on social capital throughout adolescence: a 6-year follow-up.

The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of clinical and socioeconomic factors on social capital throughout adolescence. A cohort study was performed in 2012 (T1) with a random sample of 1,134 12-year-old adolescents from Santa Maria, Brazil. Questions on socioeconomic factors (maternal education, household income, household crowding) were answered by the parents. Clinicians evaluated their dental caries (decayed, missing, and filled status of permanent teeth) and gingival bleeding (using the Community Periodontal Index). Contextual variables including the mean income of the neighborhood in which the school was located were used (T1). The adolescents were revaluated in 2018 (T2) and answered questions regarding social capital (social trust, social control, empowerment, neighborhood security, and political effectiveness). A path analysis was used to test the relationship between the predictor variables (T1) and social capital (T2). A total of 768 adolescents were reevaluated at a 6-year follow-up (cohort retention rate of 67.7%). Most of the adolescents were girls, with a low household income, about 40% had caries experience (T1), and about 64% had high social capital (T2). The highest neighborhood's mean income was related to a lower household income in T1 (p < 0.01), and this was directly related to a low social capital in T2 (p = 0.04). Furthermore, caries experience at T1 was directly associated with low social capital at T2 (p = 0.03). Socioeconomic factors were also related to caries experience. Individuals who lived in neighborhoods with greater inequality such as families with a low household income and those with untreated dental caries in early adolescence, had a low social capital after follow-up.

Determinants on Dental Caries Among Pregnant Mothers in Medical Officer of Health Area, Ambalantota, Sri Lanka

Introduction: The negative health effects of dental caries are cumulative, tracking from childhood to adulthood and most dental caries is now occurring in adults [1-3]. Oral diseases such as dental caries, gingivitis, and periodontal diseases can occur during pregnancy [4-9]. This study was carried out in Medical officer of health (MOH) area, Ambalantota, Sri Lanka. 363 pregnant women in first visit attending antenatal clinic were recruited. Written informed consent was obtained from all subjects who agreed to take part in the study. Ethical approval was taken from faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna. Prior to a dental examination, demographic information regarding age, education, occupation, socioeconomic status and residence were obtained from the participants using interviewer administered questionnaire. Findings of dental examination were entered examination table separately. The mean DMFT among antenatal women was 3.8 ± 5.17, with 3.27 (± 2.31) decayed teeth, 1.85 (± 1.87) missing teeth, and 1.4 (± 1.4) filled teeth. Results were shown in table 3 with binary logistic analysis of DMFT for the overall sample of 363 pregnant women. The final model explained 6.3% to 8.4% of DMFT variation (dependant variable) with variation of independent variables (educational level up to Ordinary level, Sinhla over non-sinhala, income over 30,000, knowledge on dental services free by government and ever taken treatment) and the p-value for Hosmer–Lemeshow test of goodness of fit was 0.957, which indicated an acceptable fit of the model. In the final model significant predictors were Sinhala: Non-sinhala (adjusted OR [95% CI]: 5.67 [1.25-25.99], p=0.026) and “ever taken treatment for dental diseases”( Yes vs No: adjusted OR [95% CI]: 0.432 [0.274-0.680], p<0.0001). In this study, pregnant women in Ambalantota MOH area were found to have a significantly higher DMFT value among Sinhala women over Non- Sinhala women and similarly significantly lower DMFT value among pregnant women who sought treatment for their dental diseases against women who did not.

Relationship between Dietary Intake and Prevalence of Dental Caries among School Aged Girls (6-12 Years) in Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah

Dental caries is common in primary school children and represent a public health problem. Dietary intake is one of the most effective factors that cause the prevalence of dental caries among girls. The objective of this research was to find the most effective nutrients consumption that enhances the prevalence of dental caries among school aged girls in Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah. Caries status was assessed using the DMFT (Decay, Missing, Filled, Teeth (primary teeth)) index. Food intake (24 hour recall), anthropometric measurements and food history were determined. This study was a cross sectional survey. A total of 300 school girls aged 6-12 years attending primary schools in Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah, Saudi Arabia were the subjects. The results indicated the prevalence of dental caries among primary school girls. This was associated with high intake of macronutrients especially carbohydrates and decreased calcium intake. The results indicated no effect of dental caries on normal growth of students. The results showed that tooth decay was associated with increased consumption of sweets and soft drinks. The linear association of dental caries with sweet, soft drinks, macronutrients consumption along with decreased calcium intake may be the most effective reasons for prevalence of dental caries in girls of Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah.

Numerical Analysis of Dental Caries Effect on the Biomechanical Behavior of the Periodontal System

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of dental caries on the stability of the periodontal system. This study presents a numerical analysis performed with three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) method to evaluate stresses in the bone surrounding the tooth with dynamic mastication combined loadings. In this work, we present a comparative study on infected and healthy periodontal systems. The infected tooth was modeled and a caries defect was introduced to the tooth coronal part. The infected tooth was evaluated and equivalent von Mises interface stress values were obtained for comparison with the ones exhibited by the healthy tooth. Our results by 3D FE analysis indicated that maximum stresses occurred primarily at the cervical level of root and alveolar bone. In the cortical bone, the stress value was greater in infected system (21.641 MPa) than in healthy system (15.752 MPa), i.e., a 37.4% increase. However, in the trabecular bone we observed only 1.6% increase in the equivalent stress values for the infected tooth model. Stress concentration at the cervical level may cause abnormal bone remodeling or bone loss, resulting loss of tooth attachment or bone damage. Our findings showed that decayed single-rooted teeth are more vulnerable to apical root resorption than healthy teeth. The numerical method presented in this study not only can aid the elucidation of the biomechanics of teeth infected by caries but also can be implemented to investigate the effectiveness of new advanced restorative materials and protocols.

This study aims to determine the relationship of parents’ behavior towards the maintenance of dental health of children (feeding habits sweet, sticky and drinking milk, teeth maintenance, inspection tooth and mouth) with dental caries in the TK R.A Bustanussholihin in Balun village Turi District of Lamongan. This study Analytics whose data is collected with a cross sectional sample of kindergarten children aged 4–6 years with a total sample of 49 children. The collection of primary data through interviews parents TK R.A Bustanussholihin student using questionnaires and secondary data obtained from the agency are in the region of the profile data TK R.A Bustanussholihin in Balun Village of Turi District of Lamongan. This study used a correlation coefficient of contingency. Based on the results of the contingency coefficient correlation test showed that the factors that have a strong relationship is the habit of feeding the sweet, sticky, and drink milk with a value of P = 0.504. While the factors that have a weak link is the habit of maintaining dental hygiene habits of children and child oral examination . From this study it can be concluded that there is a relationship or a strong correlation between feeding habits sweet, sticky and drinking milk with the incidence of dental caries in children aged 4–6. So as to prevent dental caries severity we need to hold counseling on feeding sweet, soft and gooey on the effect of dental caries as well as how it should be formula feeding or breast milk to the child to prevent rampant caries.Keywords: dental caries, sweetened food, children aged 4–6 years

Correlation between PUFA/pufa scores and BMI-for age in rural Indian children

Context: Dental caries continues to be a major health problem in the developing nations like India. The unmet dental care needs pose an important risk factor for undernutrition prevalence in rural areas. Aims: The present study aimed to investigate the effect of dental caries and its consequences using pulp involvement, ulceration, fistula, abscess (PUFA/pufa) indices on age-specific body mass index (BMI) for age, also considering socioeconomic status (SES) in 4-14 years old rural children. Materials and Methods: A total of 100 children aged 4-14 years were included in the study that presented with any of the sequelae of untreated dental caries either in primary or permanent teeth. PUFA/pufa index was used according to the standard procedure to assess the consequence of untreated dental decay. The height and weight of the children were determined using standardized scales. The BMI percentile was computed using Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) growth charts. The children SES were also recorded. Statistical Analysis Used: Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U-test were performed. Then, Spearman correlation coefficient was calculated. All calculations were performed using SPSS version 15 (Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences, Chicago, Illinois, USA). Results: BMI for age and SES show a positive correlation ( P Conclusions: The younger children belonging to lower SES have higher mean PUFA + pufa scores and below normal BMI as compared with older children.

Dental caries and salivary Interleukin-6 among preterm postpartum women in relation to baby birth weight (Comparative study)

The physiologic, biochemical and anatomic changes that occur during pregnancy are extensive and may be systemic or local. However, most of these changes return to pre pregnancy status six weeks postpartum. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of dental caries among preterm postpartum women and it's relation to baby birth weight and salivary interleukin-6 (IL-6). Materials and methods: 66 postpartum women were examined, 33 preterm postpartum women (study group) and 33 full term postpartum women (control group). Dental caries was recorded using, decayed, missing and filled surfaces index, also assess the decayed lesion by severity. Salivary samples were taken from all subjects to estimate salivary IL- 6 levels. Babies' birth weight also was measured. Results: Data of the present study showed a higher caries severity among study group compared to control group, with no statistically significant difference (P> 0.05). For both groups, the initial decayed surface D 2 was the lightest value for both groups. While the deep frank cavitations D 4 was the lowest in study group with no data recording among control group. The result revealed highly significant difference in baby birth weight between the two groups. The correlation between DS and salivary IL-6 was highly significant, and a significant correlation noticed between D3 and salivary IL-6 in study group. In control group, a highly significant positive correlation was detected between baby birth weight and DMFS, and a significant correlation was obscured between baby birth weight with decayed surface, also a significant correlation was found between salivary IL-6 and decayed surface in the same group. Conclusion: During pregnancy, a woman may be particularly amenable to disease prevention and health promotion interventions that could enhance her oral health on that of her infant's, due to the potential associations between oral health and preterm delivery and baby birth weight. Prevalence of Caries and Periodontal Disease in Betel Quid Chewers in Relation to Gender

ABSTRACT Aim The aim of our study is to evaluate the prevalence of dental caries and periodontal disease in betel quid chewers in relation to gender and to determine the treatment need and priorities in Betel quid chewers attending Baqai Dental College. Material and Method A cross sectional study conducted among patients selected from the out patient department of Baqai Dental College Karachi. A total of 100 patients aged between 22 to 60 years participated in the study. Patients with consumption of minimum seven betel quid since at least 6 months were included. Informed consent was obtained before the study began and each patient completed a questionnaire. The purpose of which was to access and obtain the information about the betel quid habits. Patients were asked to proceed for an oral examination as soon as they had finished filling the questionnaire. Reliability and validity of data was analyzed by chi square test using SPSS 19.0 version. Result A Total of 100 patients were examined in this survey. The total number of sound teeth in males was 443(84%) and total number of teeth with decay was 85(16%). The total number of sound teeth in females was 207(76%) and total number of teeth with decay was 65(24%). Female subjects showed 61% of pocket 4-5mm, mostly observed in lower right first molar. In males 4-5mm pocket was 80%, Bleeding on probing was 1% in females and 4% in males. Pocket greater than 6mm was 27% in females and 16% in males. Conclusion The present study concluded that effect of dental caries in betel quid chewers is less. A high prevalence rate of periodontal disease was found in betel quid chewers.

Effects of Dental Caries on Nutritional Status Among First-Grade Primary School Children

The aim of this study was to explore association between caries prevalence and nutritional status among first-grade primary school children. A cross-sectional study of 212 students was conducted. All students were weighed and measured and then the body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Each student underwent dental examination and was interviewed. Overall, caries prevalence was 80.2% and the average decayed, missing, and filled surfaces (dmfs) were 12.4 +/- 12.3. Although none of the students was in the underweight category, 45.8% were in low percentile (5th < BMI-for-age < 15th). Multiple logistic regression showed that each extra carious surface (dmfs) increased the odds of being at risk for underweight (5th < BMI-for-age < 15th) by 3.1% after adjusting for gender and dental visits. Our findings stressed that caries has significant implications on overall child health and health personnel should increase awareness of negative impacts and promote healthy nutritional choices for children.

Dental caries in fluorine exposure areas in China

In this study, fluorine concentrations in drinking water and in urine of residents from a fluorine exposure area in China were tested. DMFT (average number of decayed, missing and filled teeth) of local residents in four age groups were also determined. The results of the study indicate that in fluorine exposure areas, there is a strictly positive correlation between fluorine content in urine and the fluorine content in drinking water. Effect of dental caries by high fluorine content drinking water is different for the different age groups. High fluorine content drinking water is more dangerous for 15-and 18-year-old groups than 5- and 12-year-old groups.
