Determination of Fever Management and Rational Drug Use of Mothers with Children Under Six Years Old

Background: Fever is one of the most common problems of childhood, which worries mothers. An insufficient level of knowledge about when and how to intervene in fever causes children to be exposed to inadequate and/or wrong practices and to use unnecessary or improper doses of antipyretics and antibiotics Aim: In this study, it was aimed to examine the fever management and rational drug use of mothers with children under six years old. Material and Method: The research is of descriptive type. It was conducted with 276 mothers between January and March 2021.Introductory Information Form, Parental Fever Management Scale (PFMS) and Rational Drug Use Scale (RDUS) were used. The data were analyzed by number and percentage distribution, mean standard deviation, Mann Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis and correlation test. Results: It was determined that 25% of the mothers participating in the study were 30 years old and younger. The mean total score for PFMS is 28.71±3.86; RDU scale is 39.28±3.18. There was a statistically significant difference between the mothers taking their children to the doctor to fever, the children being hospitalized due to high fever before, the children having convulsions due to fever, and measuring the fever of the children when they got a fever, and the total score of the parental fever management scale. It was found that there was a statistically significant difference between the education level of the mothers, the place of residence, income level, and the total score of the rational drug use scale and getting information from someone when fever occurred. Conclusion: Based on the result of this study, It was determined that the mothers had good fever management and had rational knowledge of drug use. In addition, mothers' education level, place of residence, income level and the fact that they receive information from someone during febricity increase the knowledge of rational drug use. Therefore, it can be suggested that education programs for mothers on fever management and rational drug use.

Analysis of Risk Factors for Acute Respiratory Infections in Toddlers

Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) is still one of the most common health problems caused mortality is currently high and become global concern. Diseases that attack the respiratory tract organs are caused by various factors, both internally and externally. The purpose of this study was to identify risk factors for the incidence of ARI in young children or called toodlers aged 1-5 years at the Abepura Health Center, Jayapura City. The research method used quantitative research with a cross sectional study which was carried out in January-June 2021. The research population was 937 mothers with toddlers and 90 mothers as the samples was taken by slovin formula. Data were collected through interviews using a questionnaire. Data analysis was univariate and bivariate using Chi-Square test. The results of the study found that as many as 24 toddlers (26.7%) suffered from ARI. Factors that have a significant relationship with the incidence of ARI in children under five are nutritional status of children (p-value = 0.000 < 0.05; RP = 7.16; 95% CI = (3.79 – 13.52), immunization status (p-value = 0.002 < 0.05; RP = 3.16; 95% CI = (1.69-5.89) and family smoking habits (p-value = 0.000 < 0.05; RP = 23.14; CI95% = (5 .83 – 91.82. Meanwhile, the factor of exclusive breastfeeding (p-value = 0.766 > 0.05; RP = 1.23; 95% CI = 0.60 – 2.52) was not found to be associated with the incidence of ARI. The local health center is advised to improve communication, information and education programs for mothers about the importance of maintaining nutritional status and providing complete immunizations and an approach to families to suppress smoking habits that can affect the health of toddlers.

To determine and evaluate the first treatments applied just after injury at scene or at primary/secondary care health institutions to burn patients before admission to a burn center and to provide suggestions to increase awareness in first treatment of burns. Between November 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019 300 burn patients, who admitted for the first time to the outpatient clinics of our tertiary burn center and agreed to participate were included in this descriptive-cross-sectional study. Patient data and the first treatments applied at the scene or another health care institution were evaluated. There were 153 male (51.0%) and 147 female (49.0%) patients. Scalds with tea (n=96) and water (n=79) was the most common etiology for burns. The percentage of burned total body surface area was 3.82±4.8. The first intervention was performed at the scene in 79% (n=237) patients, while in a health institution in 21% (n=63). 73.8% (n=175) of interventions at scene and 39.7% (n=25) of 63 interventions performed in a health institution were not appropriate. Patients or their parents who admitted to our outpatient burn clinic did not have enough information about first aid in burns. With education programs for mothers, awareness can be raised about indoors childhood burns and appropriate first intervention. For protection and correct intervention in workplaces, education on occupational health and safety should be continued seriously. There were also deficiencies in treatments performed in health institutions. In this regard in-service training to health personnel would be beneficial.

Association between maternal and child oral health and dental caries in Korea

AimThe aim of this study was to examine the oral health-related behaviors in mothers and their children and the prevalence of dental caries in both.Subject and methodsA sample of 2536 children and their mothers was selected from the Fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Variables were analyzed using multiple regression to evaluate the prevalence of dental caries among children and mothers, demographic socioeconomic status, and oral health-related behaviors.ResultsThe average age of the mothers was 40.28 years and that of the children was 10.88 years. Mean DT scores were 0.67 for mothers and 0.29 for children. Mean DMFT scores were 6.63 for mothers and 1.76 for children. The higher the mother’s number of decayed, missing, or filled permanent teeth (DMFT score, B = 0.076, P < 0.001) and number of decayed teeth (DT score, B = 0.032, P = 0.038) in their permanent dentition, the higher the children’s DMFT score was for their permanent dentition. Children from mothers with low household income levels (B = 0.159, P = 0.043), with dental pain (B = 0.132, P = 0.032), and not using a dental mouth rinse (B = 0.135, P = 0.007) presented with higher DT scores. Children from mothers with low self-perceived oral health status (B = 0.113, P < 0.001), lower usage of dental floss (B = 0.100, P = 0.012), a lower ratio of protein intake to total energy (B = −0.017, P = 0.014), and lower ratio of fat intake (B = −0.009, P = 0.047) showed lower self-perceived oral health status.ConclusionThe better the oral health status of the mother, the better the oral health status of the child was. An effective oral health and education program for mothers should be developed to promote an improved oral health status of their children.

第2子を迎え入れる母親に対する準備教育プログラムの開発と評価

目 的 第2子を迎え入れる母親に対し，2人の同時育児への適応を促すために，妊娠期における準備教育プログラムを開発し評価する。対象と方法 準備教育プログラムは，ADDIEモデルを方法論的枠組みとし，先行研究を基盤にニーズ分析および目的と構成を考案し開発し，第2子妊娠中の母親に対し準備教育プログラムを実施した。便宜的標本抽出による準実験研究により介入群と対照群の2群を設定し，介入前後に自己記入式質問紙調査により，第2子妊娠中の母親の育児意識の『母親から見た第1子の様子』『2人の同時育児に対する意識』および『子ども観尺度』を評価した。結 果 第2子妊娠中の母親の年齢は30歳未満11名，30～35歳未満24名，35歳以上24名であった。第2子妊娠時の第1子年齢は4歳未満48名，4歳以上11名であった。介入群（n＝31），対照群（n＝28）の二元配置分散分析の結果，『母親が認識している第1子の様子』の「第1子は第2子の抱っこをするという」（p＜.05）において介入群に有意に増加し，第1子が第2子に関心を示す行動が強化された。『2人の同時育児に対する意識』の「2人同時育児の肯定感」（p＜.05），「2人同時育児のイメージ化ができている」（p＜.05）において介入群に有意に増加し，2人の育児に対してポジティブに捉えていた。一方，「2人同時育児の負担感」（p＜.05），「第2子出産で行動が制限されるようになった」（p＜.05），「気持ちを休めることができない」（p＜.05）において介入群に有意に低下した。結 論 第2子を迎え入れる母親に対する準備教育プログラムは，第1子に対する理解を高め，母親の育児意識に対しポジティブな影響を及ぼし，2人の同時育児の適応を促すための経産婦に特化したプログラムとして有効であることが示された。

Closing the Gap in Maternal and Child Health: A Qualitative Study Examining Health Needs of Migrant Mothers in Dandenong, Victoria, Australia

We conducted a qualitative study that explored the views and perceptions of migrant women in, Dandenong, Victoria, Australia about sociocultural barriers and health needs during pregnancy and in the postnatal period. The study was informed by the Social Identity Theory and the Acculturation Theory. It involved five focus group discussions with 35 migrant mothers from Afghanistan, Africa, China, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Iran and Jordan. Five themes emerged from the analysis: (1) the need for family support and complex social environments; (2) dealing with two cultural identities; (3) the health of mother and offspring; (4) access to the health system; and (5) life-skills for better health. Pregnancy and motherhood are challenges that are made more difficult by migration. The findings point towards the need for policies and interventions: (1) to reduce the negative impact of social isolation and lack of support during pregnancy and postnatally; (2) to support greater fathers' involvement in childcare; and (3) to reconcile different practices and expectations between traditional cultures and Australian norms. They also suggest a need to test culturally competent interventions that address health and lifestyle needs in migrant women and education programs for mothers that effectively address their concerns about maternal and child health.

종합병원 소아청소년과 내원 초등학생의 비만도와 관련 요인 분석

ABSTRACT The present study was conducted to investigate dietary habits and biochemical indices according to the obe-sity index of elementary school students visiting a hospital for diagnosis. The subjects of this study were 150 elementary school students and their mothers. The overweight rates of child subjects were 37.5% for males and 40.9% for females, whereas the rates of underweight children were 35.0% for males and 14.5% for females. Children's obesity index significantly decreased with an increase in the average monthly income of children's families. Children's obesity index, mothers' weights, BMI, and percent ideal body weight were all positively correlated. Blood biochemical values in children (hemoglobin, hematocrit, albumin, globulin, glucose, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels) and their obesity index also showed positive correlation. For the un-derweight group, the frequency of iron-deficiency anemia was significantly high, whereas for the overweight group, the frequency of dyslipidemia was high. There was a significant increase in children's obesity index and a decrease in frequency of regular exercise with time spent on the TV/computer. The normal weight group recorded the highest total scores for mothers' nutritional knowledge, whereas the overweight group re-corded the lowest total scores. Therefore, to maintain healthy weight in children, nutritional education pro-grams for mothers and children should be developed.

Death Education: A Comparison of two Programs for Mothers of Young Children

The study compared two death education programs for mothers ( N = 90) of young children. Pre- and post-test scores on the State-Anxiety Scale and researcher-designed instruments that included the Children's Questions About Death Scale (CQADS) and Future Plans Inventory (FPI) were compared. Mothers in both the Didactic and Didactic-Experiential programs scored significantly higher than the Control group in their level of effectiveness in responding to children's questions, but the two treatment groups did not significantly differ from each other. Neither the Didactic Death Education nor the Didactic-Experiential Death Education programs significantly affected mothers' anxiety before responding to children's questions about death. Post hoc analyses suggested trends relating subject characteristics to mother's level of effectiveness in responding to a child's questions about death.
