TPACK competence of mathematics education students in designing constructivist learning

The problem and the aim of the study. This study examines mathematics education students' TPACK (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge) and constructivist learning skills. The major issue is mathematical education students' ability to integrate technology, pedagogical expertise, and mathematical content knowledge in a constructivist learning setting. The study topics include how well students employ constructivist ideas in learning design, how technology supports mathematics learning, and what variables impact their TPACK abilities. By studying it more, this research may help enhance the mathematics education curriculum and teacher training to meet 21st-century education needs. Research methods. Qualitative case study research is used in this work. 23 students of the mathematics education program at Universitas Negeri Surabaya were selected. After observing students in constructivist mathematics learning design activities, in-depth interviews were conducted to understand better their views on TPACK and the constructivist approach, and their learning plans were analyzed. Students' TPACK abilities in constructivist learning will be assessed using thematic and triangulated data analysis. The research findings may help explain the problems and opportunities of constructing a mathematics education curriculum, particularly when merging TPACK and constructivist techniques. Results. The average TPACK competency of math education students is 78.4%, according to studies. According to the TPACK component analysis, students scored 85.2% on the Technology Knowledge Test (TK), 79.6% on the Pedagogical Knowledge Test (PK), and 75.8% on the Content Knowledge Test (CK). However, CK component proficiency varied, suggesting mathematical content knowledge should be improved. In-depth interviews showed that students with formal educational technology training or courses had higher TPACK ratings (M = 82.1%) than those without (M = 76.3%). These data show that formal education and training improve TPACK abilities. To optimize the constructivist method, the CK component must be improved. This research shows that technology integration and mathematics subject mastery are crucial to constructivist learning curricula and training programs for mathematics education students. Conclusion. The constructivist learning TPACK skills of mathematics education students are examined in this study. Students demonstrated technology integration, instructional competency, and mathematical topic knowledge with an average TPACK score of 78.4%. According to TPACK component analysis, pupils have good technical skills (TK) but varied mathematics topic knowledge. TPACK scores are higher for technology education students, demonstrating the role of formal learning in competency. These findings show that CK needs to include constructivism better. In conclusion, comprehensive training and mathematical content additions can improve students' TPACK skills, enabling constructivist technology usage. These insights may assist in improving mathematics curriculum and training.

Can vocational interests of students be used to recruit suitable candidates for teacher training programmes in technical vocational education and training in Germany?

PurposeIn Germany, various approaches have been taken to tackle the current teacher shortage in technical and vocational education and training (TVET). One attempt to remedy the shortage in Bavaria has been the introduction of an engineering education study programme at universities of applied sciences. Ideal candidates for this programme should have an interest in both engineering and social interaction. For effective recruitment, therefore, it is necessary to know applicants’ characteristics such as their vocational interests. In this study, the vocational interest profiles of students in TVET teacher training programmes were identified and their interest profiles and further characteristics were compared with those of other VET students at universities and universities of applied sciences.Design/methodology/approachAn online questionnaire based on Holland’s interest theory and adapted from the Allgemeiner-Interessen-Struktur-Test-3 (interest structure test) was administered to 85 students in TVET teacher training programmes at universities and universities of applied sciences in Bavaria. Items regarding reasons for choosing a particular study programme, university location and other personal details were added.FindingsThe vocational interest profiles of students at universities and universities of applied sciences can be described as similar but weakly differentiated. Insights are provided by the characteristics of students such as the majority being first-time academics in the family. The reasons for choosing the degree programme and university location highlight the fact that a large proportion of students in engineering education would not have chosen a teaching-related degree programme if it had not been offered at the respective university of applied sciences.Research limitations/implicationsAlthough the sample in this study was small and, therefore, limiting, it represented a high proportion of TVET teacher training students in Bavaria and a substantial proportion of first-year students in TVET teacher training programmes at universities and universities of applied sciences in Bavaria (section 2.2 and 3.1). Thus, the findings provide valuable insights into commonalities in interest profiles between engineering education students at universities of applied sciences and other TVET students at universities. With respect to the domain of the chosen vocational specialisation, differentiated profiles emerged that, for example, showed a stronger artistic orientation among students in construction technology/wood. For further analysis, the previous variable-centred orientation of the analysis can be supplemented by person-centred analyses (e.g. cluster analysis and latent variable mixture modelling, LVMM) (cf. Leon et al., 2021).Practical implicationsThe findings in this study reveal the potential for attracting candidates to universities of applied sciences if they prefer to study in rather rural areas close to their hometowns. With the aim to educate prospective teachers for future work not only in metropolitan regions but in rural areas too, offering bachelor degree programmes in rural areas would seem promising. A regional option can boost the recruitment of new students and attract candidates that otherwise would be unable to pursue studies or a career as a teacher in vocational education. The results of this study and those of previous studies suggest that universities of applied sciences can cooperate with universities to help solve the teacher shortage problem.Social implicationsOverall, it is apparent that the students' interests reached comparatively high values in all interest orientations and thus are only weakly differentiated. If undifferentiated profiles indicate low levels of career readiness, this significantly affects the recruitment of young people for the teaching profession. Assessing career orientation and promoting vocational interests should be prioritised during secondary school education. Vocational orientation measures are essential and should provide insight into typical activities of daily work life in different professions and thus pique and foster interests.Originality/valueThis study provides insight into how to respond to the teacher shortage in VET by identifying important characteristics of engineering education students using vocational interest profiling.

STUDENTS’ PERSPECTIVES OF QUALITY EDUCATION AT A SELECTED SOUTH AFRICAN UNIVERSITY

This study aimed to investigate the perspectives of undergraduate students in the TME (Technology and Mathematics Education) department within the Faculty of Education at a South African higher education institution regarding the quality of education they receive. Quality education is vital for equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary for their academic and professional growth. The research was framed by the Octet of Quality Theoretical Framework in Higher Education developed by Zaki and Rashidi. A qualitative case study approach was employed on ten Technology and Mathematics Education (TME) students to gather rich and in-depth data that would offer profound insights into the experiences of the students. Data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews, and the interview responses were subjected to thematic content analysis. The primary findings of the study revealed several challenges, including limited access to resources as well as student support and involvement in curriculum. These challenges can hinder the attainment of quality education. In conclusion, it is evident that both students and academics require support to ensure the delivery of quality education. To bridge the gap in achieving quality education, this paper suggests that students' perspectives on quality education are multifaceted and necessitate focused attention from higher education institutions. By addressing these multifaceted concerns, institutions can take substantial steps toward enhancing the overall quality of education for their students.

Analysis of Learning Commitment and Interest in Learning with Learning Outcomes of Building Engineering Education Students in University

This research aims to analyze: (1) the relationship between learning commitment and learning outcomes of Building Engineering Education students, Faculty of Engineering, Manado State University (PTB FT Unima), (2) the relationship between learning interest and learning outcomes of PTB FT Unima students, and (3) the relationship between commitment to learning, and interest in learning simultaneously with the learning outcomes of PTB FT Unima students. This research design is quantitative research with a survey approach. From the research results: 1) there is a relationship between learning commitment and learning outcomes of PTB FT Unima students, and contributes 23.62%; 2) there is a relationship between interest in learning and learning outcomes of PTB FT Unima students, and provides a contribution of 10.24%; 3) there is a relationship between commitment to learning and interest in learning simultaneously with the learning outcomes of PTB FT Unima students, and provides a contribution of 23.72%. Thus, increasing commitment to learning and interest in learning is one of the factors supporting the learning outcomes of PTB FT Unima students. The results imply that the higher the commitment to learning and interest in learning, the higher the learning outcomes of PTB FT Unima students. This fact proves that commitment to learning and interest in learning simultaneously provide a significant relationship with the learning outcomes of PTB FT Unima students.

Utilization of Digital Media in Managing Mental Health of Educational Technology Students at Ibn Khaldun University Bogor

The purpose of this study is to better understand how students enrolled in the Education Technology Study Program at Ibn Khaldun University of Bogor use digital media to manage their mental health. Descriptive qualitative research methodologies were used in this study, and data was gathered through interviews. 84 respondents, who were Ibn Khaldun University of Bogor students studying educational technology in semesters 1, 3, 5, and 7, participated in this survey. The findings of this study suggest that students enrolled in the Educational Technology Study Program at Ibn Khaldun University of Bogor may have difficulties managing their mental health as a result of digital media. Student responses made during interviews make it clear that digital media can improve awareness and comprehension of mental health management. The study's conclusion is that students in Ibn Khaldun University of Bogor's Education Technology Study Program have significant mental health effects from digital media. It is therefore envisaged that students will be able to focus more on how digital media is used to manage mental health.

Emotional intelligence and entrepreneurial intention among university undergraduates in Nigeria: exploring the mediating roles of self-efficacy domains

How emotional competencies influence entrepreneurial behaviour especially among college students remains an under-researched subject in the entrepreneurship literature. In a unique perspective, this study examined the mediating roles of self-efficacy belief dimensions in the relationship between emotional intelligence and entrepreneurial intention of Electrical/Electronics Technology Education (EETE) students. The study was carried out among 192 EETE university students in 4 federal universities in South-East Nigeria. The hypothesized causal relationships based on literature were tested using covariance-based structural equation modelling (CB-SEM). Andrew Hayes’ PROCESS plugin in SPSS was used to simultaneously estimate the mediating effects of the self-efficacy components (perceived competence, perceived control, and perceived persistence). Data analysis results revealed that emotional intelligence had a significant positive effect on entrepreneurial intention in isolation, while the direct effect of emotional intelligence in the structural (mediation) model was not significant. Out of the three dimensions of self-efficacy, perceived competence and perceived persistence had significant partial mediating effects. The implications of the findings and recommendations were discussed.

Prediction of Grade Point Average (GPA) for Students at Informatics and Computer Engineering Education – Universitas Negeri Jakarta during Online Learning Using Naive Bayes Algorithm

The transition of learning models from face-to-face to online learning has had several impacts on student learning, reflected in their academic achievements. This study aims to determine the performance of the algorithm model using data mining classification techniques in predicting the Semester Grade Point Average (GPA) of Informatics and Computer Engineering Education students, at Universitas Negeri Jakarta during online learning. The prediction employed the Naive Bayes algorithm and the dataset obtained by collecting questionnaires from 2020 and 2021 batches. The total data obtained is 155 records with 13 (thirteen) attributes in the form of 1 (one) ID attribute including NIM, 11 (eleven) regular attributes including gender, college entrance, smartphone facilities, network conditions, preferred online applications, interest in learning, learning attitudes, learning creativity, parental support, study groups, and other activities outside of lectures during online learning, and 1 (one) the label attribute namely the Semester Grade Point Average for students in 3rd and 5th semester. The evaluation of this research involved the confusion matrix and the ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) curve. Confusion matrix resulted in an accuracy of 75%, precision of 28.33%, and recall of 26.43%. The ROC curve resulted in an AUC value of 0.679, indicating the category of poor classification. This study also applied the SMOTE data balancing technique, leading to a confusion matrix evaluation with 88.46% accuracy, 57.43% precision, and 52.14% recall. Furthermore, the ROC curve resulted in an AUC value of 0.809 which is categorized as a Good classification.

Interactive/Smart Whiteboard and Student-Teachers Academic Performance in Educational Technology at the University of Calabar, Nigeria

This study investigated the effect of the use of interactive or smart whiteboard on student teachers’ academic performance in educational technology. Two objectives, research questions and hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. A non-randomized pre-test post- test experimental design was adopted with a total of 110 second year educational technology students as sample. Educational Technology Performance Test (ETPT) with a reliability co-efficient of 0.75 obtained from Kuder Richardson formula 21 was used in generating data for the study, Descriptive statistics of Mean, Standard Deviation and Analysis of Covariance were used in analysis of data. Findings from the study showed that the use of interactive whiteboard was more effective in enhancing students’ performance than the traditional whiteboard. The result also showed that there was no significant difference between the academic performance of male and female students who used the Smart board. Based on the research findings it was recommended that university managements should be encouraged to install Interactive whiteboards in classrooms and teachers should be sent on training on the use of these smart boards for instructional delivery.

Delving into the Learning Styles of a Technical Higher Education Institution in the Bicol, Region, Philippines

Learning styles is relevant in the educational set up to provide insights as to the proper and appropriate teaching strategies and assessment tasks to be given to the students in ensuring optimum learning experience. Relative to this, the study assessed the learning styles of the 260 industrial technology and technical-vocational teacher education students in a rural higher education institution (HEI_ in the Philippines using the Learning Styles Model of Honey and Mumford (1968) after the COVID-19 pandemic using a descriptive evaluative research design. The results shows that a strong preference on activist learning was noted among the respondents followed by theorists. The data also reflects that upon review of the data by sex, by program currently enrolled in, and by year level, the learning styles are consistent with the general response of the total sample. Likewise, in terms of challenges experienced by the students in their pursuit of higher learning in a technical school, it was noted that the cost of internet/mobile data as well as the sufficiency of the materials, tools and equipment are prevalent. Thus, it was recommended that the faculty of the said HEI may consider recalibrating learning plans reflected in the course syllabus and align it with the results of the study which further implies additional learning activities that will allow students to do hands-on, and also to enhance the shop facilities of the said HEI in compliance to existing statutory and regulatory requirements of relevant governing agencies to ensure optimum learning experience among the clienteles.

This study explores the difficult scenery of email communication between undergraduate students enrolled in the Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology Education (BICTE) program within the university. The research explores various facets of email usage, including structure, literacy, and performance, shedding light on the prevalent challenges faced by students in effectively conveying messages. Significant findings encompass issues such as inapt structure, the absence of vital information, empty subjects, casual language, and the tendency to send multiple emails at once. Through the analysis of 175 actual emails exchanged between students and department heads, the study seeks to unravel patterns, trends, and deficiencies in email communication. The identified challenges underscore the importance of enhancing digital literacy and communication skills among BICTE students, addressing the delicate balance between formality and informality in academic emails, and promoting organized correspondence to facilitate a positive and efficient learning environment. The insights gleaned from this research aim to inform strategic improvements in communication training within the BICTE program, ultimately fostering a more effective and professional email communication culture.

The Influence of Industrial Work Practice Experience-Career Information on Student Competence with Work Motivation as an Intervening Variable in Bachelor of Electrical Engineering Education Graduates

Objective: This research aims to analyze (1) the direct influence of industrial work practice experience on work motivation, (2) the direct influence of industrial work practice experience on competency, (3) the indirect influence of industrial work practice experience on work readiness through work motivation; (4) the direct influence of career information on work motivation; (5) the direct influence of career information on competency; (6) indirect influence of career information on competence through work motivation; and (7) the direct influence of work motivation on the competency of undergraduate Electrical Engineering Education students at the Faculty of Engineering. Method: The quantitative approach used in this research is the path analysis model. The population in this study were all undergraduate students of Electrical Engineering Education at the Faculty of Engineering, with a total population of 194 graduate students. Results: This research concluded that (1) industrial work practice experience has a direct effect on work motivation by 16%; (2) industrial work practice experience has a direct effect on competency by 16.81%; (3) industrial work practice experience has an indirect effect on competence through work motivation of 1.25%; (4) career information has a direct effect on work motivation by 7.29%; and (5) career information has a direct effect on competency by 4.41%. Novelty: Internship experience has a direct influence on work motivation and competence. This means that the Department of Electrical Engineering is expected to properly monitor and evaluate the implementation of students' industrial work practices in industry. Monitoring can be done through monitoring instruments, which must be filled in by internal supervisors and external supervisors, with the hope of increasing the effectiveness of implementing industrial work practices. Apart from that, the industry is expected to be able to optimize the role of students during industrial work practices so that they gain knowledge and experience that influences work motivation and competence.

Online addictions are real: What are technology educators doing about it?

There are now five technological areas included in the New Zealand technology curriculum, two of which are based on digital technology. Like many other subjects, technology education encourages students to conduct research, consult with experts and design digital products. Increasingly, Generation-Z students use digital resources for learning, collaboration, and research, rather than face-to-face, phone, or letter communications, which are considered anachronistic. There is evidence that this improves the educational experience for most learners, but evidence for the impact on students and teachers who suffer from online and digital addictions is sparse. To ensure safe online practices for children, many countries have developed security guidelines and policies. Most of these efforts are aimed at keeping children safe from predatory interactions, preventing inappropriate content from reaching children, and minimising security breaches such as viruses, phishing, or scams. The strategies vary, but commonly include reducing screen time, implementing web security processes, and providing guidelines for parents and teachers. Generally, this protection focuses on protecting the user from others but not on protecting learners and teachers from themselves – particularly from compulsive online behaviours. With the recent advent of COVID and increased exposure to working, teaching and learning remotely, online and digital addiction issues have been exacerbated. It is now timely to consider options for supporting people suffering from digital addictions and those at risk. Effectively integrating research argumentation in syllabus learning: A case study of reading journal articles in four fourth-year engineering fluid mechanics courses

In an emerging trend in engineering education students are engaged in the scientific discovery process through reading about research published in articles rather than textbooks. A research-based and curriculum-oriented intervention in an undergraduate course was designed to elucidate whether students can progressively gain reading skills when provided with selected articles explicitly related to fluid mechanics research. The aim was also to monitor student awareness of their own progress. A questionnaire was designed to evaluate how fourth-year fluid technology students perceived their reading skills during the teaching intervention. A progressive strategy was applied, including warm-up readings, in- and out-of-class assignments, and best practice lectures. Two parallel test exams and test readings were associated and quantitatively analyzed. Each cohort was randomly divided into two groups, and each group was assigned a different test reading before the lectures; the readings were then switched for the post-lecture assignment. The results demonstrate that the students acquired selective reading skills and awareness of accomplishment. The analyses indicated that learners gained an understanding of the core concepts and gave positive feedback on the teaching materials and schedule. These findings may serve as a guide for engineering educators to improve the preparation of undergraduate students.

THE INFLUENCE OF DIGITAL LITERACY ON STUDENT LEARNING

This study aims to determine the influence of digital literacy on the learning outcomes of students of the Educational Technology study program at the Indonesian Christian University of Toraja. Research is a quantitative research type of experiment. This research was conducted at the Indonesian Christian University of Toraja Education Technology Study Program. The sample of this study is all Educational Technology students class of 2021 consisting of 49 students. The total number of samples used was 49 students, using non-random sampling techniques. The results of this study used descriptive analysis and inferential analysis using SPSS 22. The results obtained in this study that in the use of digital literacy of students in producing learning is very releva. From the results of this research, it can be stated that it is significant for student learning outcomes.
