Australian rural emergency nurses' care of paediatric patients: A qualitative study

BackgroundRural emergency nurses (RENs) are expected to provide care to paediatric patients presenting to their facilities however, as generalist nurses, they experience challenges and feelings that are unique to the rural context. Design and methodsAn exploratory qualitative study of 13 RENs via semi structured interviews of perceptions and experiences of caring for paediatrics and self-determination of autonomous practice, motivations and connectedness in care was the approach used. FindingsInductive thematic analysis of data identified four themes with sub-themes identified within each theme. The four themes were: Caring for Children, Professional Roles, Professional Care and Connection and Professional Development. ConclusionRENs describe feeling fear, stress and anxiety when caring for sick children, particularly when known to the patient and family in their community yet will self-determine autonomous practice and use gatekeeping in certain situations of paediatric care. RENs are motivated to increase their paediatric knowledge and skills, seeking paediatric education opportunities but face barriers in attendance such as travel and costs. RENs rely on connectedness with other rural nurses, seeking paediatric nursing guidance or telehealth support, particularly when performing multiple roles or in the absence of a doctor in the ED. Practice implicationsProvision of opportunities for RENs to lead education in paediatric nursing, that is contextually appropriate and co-designed with paediatric experts is preferred. This would yield greater REN engagement and participation in paediatric education for knowledge and skill proficiency, would increase rural nurse professional development and reduce feelings of fear and anxiety when caring for paediatrics.

Resilience in Oral Health Professional Education: A Scoping Review.

Resilience is defined as an individual's capacity to effectively adapt in the face of challenges without detrimental effects on their health and well-being. This scoping review identifies and rationalises the published concepts that underpin resilience in oral health professional (OHP) education. It provides recommendations for the development of evidence-based strategies for promoting resilience in OHP education. The PRISMA and Arksey and O'Malley methodological frameworks for scoping reviews were used to determine the methodology and answer the question 'What concepts contribute to resilience in OHP Education?'. The search strategy included published literature searches and internet searches. In total, 744 articles on resilience and coping were identified, and 59 were included after excluding irrelevant records. Most studies used surveys as their study design and focused on undergraduate dental students in North America and Asia. Three main themes were identified: factors that contribute to resilience, measurement tools and scales and enhancing resilience. This review highlights a positive correlation between increased resilience and improved outcomes for dental students. Resilience and its related factors are not well understood. There is insufficient evidence to support interventions for building resilience due to inconsistent measuring methods and limited research validating resilience scales in OHP education. Investigators should accurately understand the terminology for clarity and consistency. Validated outcome measures and student feedback should be used to determine the effectiveness of interventions. It is important to teach students coping strategies to manage stressors, and digital applications for building resilience should be developed and tested in OHP student populations.

Effect of Beta-Alanine Supplementation on Maximal Intensity Exercise in Trained Young Male Individuals: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Beta-alanine is a nonessential amino acid that is commonly used to improve exercise performance. It could influence the buffering of hydrogen ions produced during intense exercise and delay fatigue, providing a substrate for increased synthesis of intramuscular carnosine. This systematic review evaluates the effects of beta-alanine supplementation on maximal intensity exercise in trained, young, male individuals. Six databases were searched on August 10, 2023, to identify randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trials investigating the effect of chronic beta-alanine supplementation in trained male individuals with an age range of 18-40years. Studies evaluating exercise performance through maximal or supramaximal intensity efforts falling within the 0.5-10min duration were included. A total of 18 individual studies were analyzed, employing 18 exercise test protocols and 15 outcome measures in 331 participants. A significant (p = .01) result was observed with an overall effect size of 0.39 (95% confidence interval [CI] [0.09, 0.69]), in favor of beta-alanine supplementation versus placebo. Results indicate significant effects at 4weeks of supplementation, effect size 0.34 (95% CI [0.02, 0.67], p = .04); 4-10min of maximal effort, effect size 0.55 (95% CI [0.07, 1.04], p = .03); and a high beta-alanine dosage of 5.6-6.4g per day, effect size 0.35 (95% CI [0.09, 0.62], p = .009). The results provide insights into which exercise modality will benefit the most, and which dosage protocols and durations stand to provide the greatest ergogenic effects. This may be used to inform further research, and professional or recreational training design, and optimization of supplementation strategies.

Bridging nursing professional development and Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice™

BackgroundBoth the faculty shortage and limited clinical placement opportunities for students impact the use of simulation in nursing programs. Despite widespread use, many nursing faculty do not have training in simulation best practices and have limited skills and confidence in the use of simulation. MethodAs part of a Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Grant, a Simulation Series was developed for nurse educators and graduate nurse educator students with the objective of increasing knowledge, confidence and skill as a nurse educator utilizing simulation as a teaching strategy. The series was developed based on the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice™. The education was designed to be a four-part Simulation Series combining both in person and virtual components. Completion of the series provided 20 contact hours of Nursing Professional Development (NPD). ResultsTwelve participants completed all 4 modules in the series, limiting the generalizability of the data. However, data suggest an overall improvement in knowledge, confidence, and skills. ConclusionsDevelopment of clinically and technologically relevant simulation education based on set standards can challenge nurse educators. Nursing professional development can be a tool to close the knowledge, skills, and practice gap.

Development of the preschool teachers’ partnership competence

The aim of this research was to study the current level of preschool teachers’ partnership competence in the aspect of interacting in the teaching staff. During the research, questionnaires and statistical methods of analysis were conducted. The results of the study show that 82% of the respondents describe the psychological climate in the team as moderately favourable, 6% note its high level, 9% feel low favourableness, and 3% see it as unfavourable. The conducted research revealed a positive moderate correlation between the partnership competence level and the psychological climate level in the team of preschool teachers. Therefore, a positive psychological climate, characterized by mutual understanding, support and openness, contributes to creating a favorable environment for partnership interaction. When teachers feel comfortable and supported in the team, they are more inclined to work together, share experiences and provide mutual support. The area of further research is to identify the relationship between the professional development of teachers and their partnership competence, as well as to study the impact of distance learning on partnership interaction between teachers and ways of its development in the digital environment.

Is epistemic injustice a worthy application to mental health nurse education?

This paper explores the philosophical concept of epistemic injustice and contends its significance and relevance to mental health nurse education and clinical practice. The term epistemic injustice may be unfamiliar to mental health nurses, yet the effects are readily visible in the dismissing, silencing, and doubting of service users' knowledge, testimony, and interpretation. Existing professional values and clinical standards lack depth and critical exploration pertaining to epistemology and associated ethical concerns. Despite central tenets of person-centred care and valuing the service users' voice, epistemic injustice continues to occur. Epistemic injustice cannot be summed up merely by asking nurses to listen to service users. This represents an oversimplification of epistemology, ignoring the complexities of social influence and knowledge exchanges. Epistemic injustice brings something new and innovative to the nursing curriculum and fits within the principles of heutagogy. It encourages deep reflexivity surrounding the ethical issues of power inequalities and intersectionality. Inclusion in mental health nursing education allows for the social and political powers of psychiatric diagnosis as a form of silencing and stigma to be examined. Practical application is made to mental health nursing education and practice with epistemological values and ethical reflexive prompts. These can be utilised by educators and lecturers for pre-registration mental health nurse education, post-registration, and continued professional development.

Environmental Sustainability in Oral Health Professional Education: Approaches, Challenges, and Drivers-ADEE Special-Interest Group Report.

This paper reports on the scholarship activity of the 'Sustainability in Dentistry' Special-interest Group (SiG), which met at the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) annual conference in Liverpool on 25 August 2023. The aim of this study was to (i) identify current teaching practices and approaches to embedding Environmental Sustainability (ES) in the curriculum in ADEE attendee schools and (ii) explore existing barriers/challenges to incorporating ES in dental education and consider potential solutions. A mixed-methods approach was used to fulfil the aims of this study. A pre-workshop questionnaire was used to explore current teaching practices, challenges and drivers of embedding ES in the curriculum. An interactive workshop at the in-person meeting in Liverpool was used to propose key strategies to overcome the most frequent challenges to embedding ES in the curriculum. The majority of respondents (56%) reported that their institutions do not currently teach ES. Traditional didactic forms of teaching were mostly reported to teach ES in non-clinical environments, and a transition to more environmentally sustainable materials and instruments was the most popular response for clinical teaching. Key barriers to embedding ES in the curriculum were identified, including time constraints and the overloaded curriculum, a lack of expertise/knowledge to teach and lack of practical guidance to support educators, limited learning resources for staff and students and resistance from colleagues regarding the relevance of ES in dentistry. The special-interest group participants proposed strategies to overcome these challenges that centred around 14 themes. This paper reports recent scholarship activity by ADEE's 'Sustainability in Dentistry' SiG. Key strategies for overcoming the most common challenges to embedding ES in the curriculum are also discussed.

Impact of Online Learning Platforms in Enhancing Employees' Skills and Knowledge in Academia

Abstract: The study investigates the impact of online learning platforms like Coursera and NPTEL on enhancing educators' skills and knowledge in academia. With digital transformation accelerating post-COVID-19, platforms offer flexibility for professional development, yet challenges persist. The study, conducted through a survey of 73 educators in Bengaluru, uses quantitative and descriptive methods, applying statistical tools like Correlation, Chi-Square tests, and ANOVA to assess platform effectiveness. Key findings reveal that platforms like LinkedIn Learning and Udemy are popular, but balancing work and learning is a challenge for many. While educators appreciate the flexibility, 56.2% express dissatisfaction with the long-term career growth and skill development offered by these platforms. The study highlights the need for better interactive features, practical learning opportunities, and improvements in course content to support effective professional growth in academia. In conclusion, while online platforms provide valuable resources, they must address these gaps to fully meet educators' needs for continuous upskilling

This study investigates the critical processes and challenges faced by employees at Velmurugan Heavy Engineering Pvt. Ltd., located in Sengipatti, Thanjavur. The aim is to identify areas for improvement and provide recommendations to enhance employee performance and organizational effectiveness. Employing a mixed-method approach combining qualitative and quantitative methods, data were collected extensively through surveys, interviews, and observations from a representative sample across departments and hierarchical levels. The findings highlight critical areas such as project management, quality control, communication channels, and performance evaluation. While the organization demonstrates competence in these areas, gaps exist, particularly in streamlined communication and efficient project management. The study also uncovers challenges including unclear role expectations, limited professional development opportunities, inadequate work-life balance, and insufficient recognition and rewards. Recommendations are offered to strengthen communication channels, enhance project management practices, implement employee development programs, promote work-life balance initiatives, and establish a robust recognition and rewards system. Gen Z and Generative AI: Shaping the Future of Learning and Creativity

Thus, the appearance of the Generative Artificial Intelligence opened up a great turn in many areas, including education and creative industries. This paper seeks to understand the deep impact that Generative AI is going to have on learning and creating processes for the social context of Generation Z (Gen Z) students – born in digital culture. The work looks into the possibilities and challenges that Gen Z in collaboration with Generative AI leads to the future of learning and creativity. This paper is relevant as it offers some understanding of the ongoing changes in the education and creativity together with the escalating growth in technology. The nature of the association between the members of Generation Z and the Generative AI needs to be known by the educational stakeholders, policymakers, and business executives to leverage value from the existing and upcoming technologies together with dealing with possible negative impacts. The purpose of this study was to explore the nature and uses of Generative AI, and its effects on the learning and creativity of Gen Z, in addition to identifying the advantages, disadvantages, opportunities, and risks/partities’ concerns that are commensurate with the integration of this technology in teaching/learning and creative processes. To achieve the objectives of the study the following research methodology was used: The research used both a literature review and documentary research. The materials used included academic publications, Industry reports, books and other credible internet sources on Generative AI and its impact on the education and creativity of the Gen Z. The document analysis included policy papers, educational technology reports, case studies and white papers from academic and professional bodies as well as other industries that involve Generative AI. Several insights show that using Generative AI can positively impact learners’ experiences, engagement, and creativity. However, there was some controversy about the excessive usage of AI and claimed that because of it people may get worse at critical thinking. The following were noted to be major concerns; Ethical Issues: they included issues to do with bias in the algorithms as well as the right to privacy of data. Thus, the findings of this research point to a three-way settlement with respect to the use of Generative AI in education and creative industries. It underlines the guideline of how human creativity and critical thinking ought to be sustained, while using AI tools. Proposals include, the need to teach critical thinking alongside AI use, fostering ethical AI consciousness, surged AI education, appropriate non-ethnical AI data set, strong AI policies and pro positive AI inspires and creative constructive use. The research implications for future studies include studying the changes in the achievement of learning outcomes over a period of time, wherein Generative AI has been incorporated and understanding how this technology influences different learning styles and needs, the issues of ethical and privacy concern, the requirement of professional development to educators in relation to Generative AI and finally, the comparison information and communication technology for learning between different cultures. Related to that, further studies on the effectiveness of AI in approaches like collaborative learning, its potential on preparing learners for employment, and on the psychology of students would be helpful in informing the future advancement of Generative AI in school and particular creative areas.

Safety first: the hidden curriculum of whiteness in race-conscious professional learning

ABSTRACT Applying the analytic lens of critical whiteness, we examine the relationship between facilitation structures and the quality of racial dialogue in educator professional development. We draw on data from a five-session virtual ‘antiracist reading group’ in a rapidly diversifying U.S. district, convened and facilitated by a White district leader. Observed discussions tended towards the superficial and did little to challenge participants’ existing worldviews. We argue that the leader’s facilitation decisions characterised a ‘hidden curriculum’ of safety and comfort that inhibited participants’ development. These moves were further shaped by and reified persistent manifestations of whiteness. We offer implications for the facilitation of antiracist professional learning, equity leadership, broader policies related to equity, and future research.

АНАЛИЗ ПРАКТИЧЕСКИХ АСПЕКТОВ СОВЕРШЕНСТВОВАНИЯ ПРОФЕССИОНАЛЬНОЙ КОМПЕТЕНТНОСТИ ФАРМАЦЕВТИЧЕСКИХ РАБОТНИКОВ В ОБЛАСТИ ВЗАИМОДЕЙСТВИЯ С МАЛОМОБИЛЬНЫМИ ПОСЕТИТЕЛЯМИ АПТЕЧНЫХ ОРГАНИЗАЦИЙ С ОГРАНИЧЕННЫМИ ВОЗМОЖНОСТЯМИ ЗДОРОВЬЯ

Currently, pharmacies are part of the healthcare system and must comply with the requirements for providing an accessible environment for people with disabilities, including providing them with the opportunity to receive the necessary pharmaceutical services. The aim of the study is to analyze the practical aspects of improving the professional competence of pharmacists in the field of interaction with people with limited mobility and disabilities in pharmacies. The texts of regulatory legal acts of the Russian Federation and also systemic and logical methods of their interpretation have been used in this study. It has been revealed that the current federal state educational standards of higher education and secondary vocational education in the specialty «Pharmacy» do not directly provide for the need to train future pharmacists in the basics of professional interaction with people with disabilities, but they establish the possibility of introducing additional competencies and/or new academic disciplines into the curricula for more in-depth training of graduates. It has been shown that pharmacists are required to have knowledge of the anatomical and functional characteristics of various groups of people with limited mobility and disabilities, their physiological states and pathological processes that directly affect their ability to receive pharmaceutical services in pharmacies. The possibility of pharmacists of pharmacies to consult people with limited mobility and disabilities on the necessary pharmacy goods online has been analyzed, taking into account possible functional disorders in these people – in various formats: text, audio only or using video communication. It has been proposed to introduce training on relevant aspects of their professional interaction with visitors to pharmacies with disabilities into educational programs for training and professional development of pharmacists.

Integrating educational technology into Lesotho Secondary Religious Studies: A conceptual exploration of practical challenges and opportunities

The use of educational technology (Ed-tech) is becoming more prevalent in shaping teaching methods to meet the needs of modern learners. This study examines how Ed-tech is integrated into secondary Religious Studies classrooms in Lesotho, using the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework as a guide. By reviewing global literature, it looks at the opportunities and challenges of incorporating digital tools into Religious Studies, a subject aimed at developing social skills and moral values. Research suggests that technology can improve student engagement, critical thinking, and ethical reasoning through platforms like cloud-based learning and multimedia resources. However, Lesotho faces obstacles in implementing Ed-tech, including inadequate infrastructure, insufficient teacher training, and outdated educational policies, which leads to a digital divide, especially in rural areas with limited access to electricity and the internet. The study concludes that while Ed-tech has the potential to transform Religious Studies education, addressing these systemic barriers is crucial for effective implementation. It recommends improving technological infrastructure, providing professional development for teachers, updating curriculum policies to meet 21st-century requirements, and integrating digital literacy into the Religious Studies curriculum. Overcoming these challenges will not only bridge the digital divide but also enhance the teaching and learning of Religious Studies, equipping learners with skills to navigate the ethical and digital complexities of the modern world.

(Dis)empowering native speakers? Teachers’ perceptions in Malta

Abstract The article explores the perceptions of English language teachers in Malta with respect to native English-speaking teachers. It discusses the results of a small-scale study involving interviews with teachers working in a boutique English language school. Although the participants acknowledge English’s global significance, the idea of NS supremacy persists. Malta’s colonial heritage reinforces the authority belonging to the NS and influences teachers’ perceptions, with those participants hailing from former colonies struggling with how the NS/NNS dichotomy affected their self-perception. The study discusses the enduring power of the standard varieties possessing prestige, and how British colonialism still impacts teachers’ perceptions. It emphasizes the duty to oppose native-speakerism and promote teachers’ cultural diversity. Finally, the article underscores the necessity for further teacher professional development tailored to the changing Maltese multilingual context amid English’s transformation from the language of power to a lingua franca.

Investigating EFL English-Majored Students’ Perceptions of Interactive Teaching Methods in Language Classes

This study investigates the perceptions of EFL English-major students at Nam Can Tho University regarding interactive teaching methods. Interactive methods, which include activities such as group work, discussions, role-playing, and peer feedback, are increasingly adopted in language education to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. Grounded in Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and sociocultural theory, the study explores both the benefits and challenges associated with these methods. A 20-item questionnaire, adapted from existing literature, was administered to 70 students to gather data on their experiences. The findings reveal that students recognize significant benefits of interactive methods, including increased motivation, improved language skills, and practical application of English. However, challenges such as difficulties in transitioning from traditional methods, staying focused due to distractions, managing group activities, addressing cultural influences, and ensuring equal participation were also identified. The study highlights the need for targeted support and professional development for educators, effective classroom management strategies, and culturally responsive teaching practices to enhance the effectiveness of interactive teaching methods. These insights contribute to the ongoing discourse on interactive teaching and offer practical recommendations for improving language instruction in EFL contexts.
