Hepatitis B screening and knowledge among Chinese and Vietnamese students in Australia.

Research has shown that there are significant gaps in hepatitis B knowledge among migrant communities who are at risk of hepatitis B, such as Chinese and Vietnamese communities. Many students studying within Australia come from countries with high prevalence of hepatitis B. However, there is very little research examining hepatitis B knowledge, screening, or vaccination among university students in Australia or worldwide. The aim of this paper was to measure both levels of and demographic differences in hepatitis B screening and knowledge among Chinese and Vietnamese students in Australia. Online surveys were completed by 112 Chinese- and 95 Vietnamese-identifying students in Australia, measuring knowledge of hepatitis B, engagement in screening and vaccination, and demographic characteristics. Results show that although engagement in screening and vaccination for hepatitis B was high, there were significant gaps in knowledge around transmission of hepatitis B. There were also some key demographic differences in screening and knowledge. For instance, those born in Australia were more likely to have been screened compared to those born Mainland China, Hong Kong, or Vietnam. Chinese students born in Australia had lower levels of knowledge compared to those born in Mainland China or Hong Kong. Among both samples, knowing someone living with hepatitis B was associated with higher levels of knowledge. Findings underscore the need for education-based interventions to address the significant gaps that exist in knowledge around hepatitis B, with a specific need for culturally appropriate resources in a range of languages to cater to the diverse communities who may be at risk of hepatitis B.

Effectiveness of nursing interventions in the prevention of falls in older adults in the community and in health care settings: A systematic review and meta-analysis of RCT

ObjectiveTo estimate the effectiveness of fall prevention programs in people aged 65 years and older involving nursing professionals. MethodsWe included available full-text randomized clinical trials on nurse-led prevention of falls in the community in people over 65 years of age and reporting the incidence of such falls. An extensive search was performed in 14 databases covering the period 2016–2018 for publications in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish.The quality of the papers was assessed independently and blindly by reviewers working in pairs using the risk of bias dominios of the Cochrane Collaboration.The hazard ratio was used as a measure of the effect size of the incidence of falls. A random-effects model was assumed for statistical analyses. The influence of moderator variables of the studies on the effect sizes was performed using ANOVAs and its 95% CI for each moderator category. ResultsA total of 31 randomized clinical trials were selected with 25,551 participants. The most frequent type of intervention was education (57.1%), followed by multifactorial models (37.1%). The probability of falling was significantly reduced by 13% in the intervention groups compared to the control groups (RR+=0.87). Multifactorial (RR+=0.89) and education-based (RR=+0.84) interventions significantly reduced the probability of falls by 11% and 16%, respectively. ConclusionsDiscarding publication bias prevention programs carried out by nurses produce a significant 10% reduction in falls. Education-based and multifactorial interventions are the most effective when conducted by nurses.

EFFECTS OF CONSERVATIVE VALUES AND AGING KNOWLEDGE ON YOUNG ADULTS’ AGEISM AGAINST OLDER ADULTS

Abstract Ageism – the stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination of individuals solely based on age – is an unfortunately prevalent phenomenon for older adults to experience from young adults, and increased ageism among young adults has been associated with more conservative values and beliefs. Previous interventions to reduce ageism in young adults have focused on increasing knowledge about aging and contact between generations, since greater aging knowledge is associated with decreased ageism. However, recent studies identify multiple forms of ageism, including negative ageism (e.g., beliefs about older adults’ lack of cognitive and physical ability) and positive ageism (e.g., stereotypes of older people as warm and reliable). This study therefore examined the relationships between young adults’ conservative values, aging knowledge, and both negative and positive ageism about older adults. Participants were young adults (N = 459), ages 18 to 25 years (M = 20.10, SD = 1.76), who completed the Relating to Older People Evaluation, Social and Economic Conservatism Scale, and Palmore’s Facts on Aging Quiz in an online survey. Results showed that conservatism was positively associated with negative and positive ageism, while aging knowledge was only negatively associated with negative ageism. Hierarchical regressions found that aging knowledge explained significant variance in negative ageism when controlling for conservatism, but only conservatism explained variance in positive ageism. These findings suggest that interventions including education on aging for young adults may be able to overcome the negative ageism associated with conservative values, but that positive ageism may not be meaningfully addressed by such education-based interventions.

Changing the mindsets? Education and the intergenerational spread of tolerance for physical violence against women in Zimbabwe

We investigate the relationship between childhood exposure to interparental violence and adult tolerance for violent beliefs against women. For individuals who have witnessed parental violence in childhood, our analysis suggests a 14.3–15.2 percentage point (pp) increase in tolerance, highlighting the transmission of violent beliefs across generations. Leveraging Zimbabwe’s 1980 education reform as a natural experiment through a regression discontinuity design, we explore the potential of increased education to disrupt this intergenerational transmission. The reform led to an approximately two-year increase in female education, with a more pronounced impact in rural areas. This educational boost is associated with an estimated 4.1–7.9 pp reduction in tolerance for violence, especially among those who witnessed parental violence in childhood. We identify four primary mechanisms contributing to this reduction in tolerance: enhanced access to information, increased help-seeking behaviours, improved labour market outcomes, and higher educational levels among partners. Our findings underscore the effectiveness of educational policies in reducing tolerance for violence against women within low-income contexts such as Zimbabwe, thereby disrupting its intergenerational transmission. Moreover, these results emphasise the potential of education-based interventions in addressing the broader issue of violence against women in low-income countries.

Moderate-to-Vigorous Physical Activity in Physical Education: A Review of Reviews

Purpose: This paper aimed to examine moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) levels in physical education. Method: A review of reviews was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The screening process, data extraction, assessment of the risk of bias, and analysis of the results were carried out independently by two reviewers. A total of eight systematic reviews from six databases, which included 224 studies, involving more than 80,000 students (elementary, middle, and high school), enrolled in more than 450 schools worldwide were unpacked. Results: Students fail to meet the 50% recommendation of MVPA lesson time, irrespective of country, school stage, gender, or MVPA measures. Physical education-based interventions increased students’ MVPA during lessons (range 14.3%–24%) compared with control groups. Conclusion: Physical education is uniquely positioned to provide physical activity opportunities for students, but teachers must target the provision of adequate MVPA levels, which is not currently happening.

Background Persons with traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) are often experience polypharmacy, the use of multiple medications, to manage secondary complications and concurrent conditions. Despite the prevalence of polypharmacy and challenges associated with managing medications, there are few tools to support persons with SCI with medication self-management. Objective The purpose of this scoping review was to identify and summarize what is reported in the literature on medication self-management interventions for adults with traumatic SCI. Methods Articles were searched on electronic databases and grey literature. For inclusion, articles were required to include an adult population with a traumatic SCI and an intervention targeting medication management. They had to incorporate a component of self-management. Articles were independently screened and data were extracted and synthesized using descriptive approaches. Findings Three studies were included in this scoping review. Interventions included a mobile app and two education-based interventions to address self-management of SCI, medication management, and pain management. None of the identified interventions addressed medication self-management comprehensively. Learning outcomes (perceived knowledge and confidence), behavioural outcomes (management strategies, data entry), and clinical outcomes (number of medications, pain scores, functional outcomes) were evaluated. Results of the interventions varied, but some positive outcomes were noted, with improvements in perceived knowledge and confidence and a reduction in the use of multiple pain medications. Conclusion Overall, there are limited interventions targeting medication self-management for persons with SCI. There is an opportunity better support this population through the co-design and implementation of an intervention that comprehensively addresses self-management.

Contact reduces substance use stigma through bad character attributions, especially for U.S. health care professionals.

People with substance use disorders (SUDs) are faced with pervasive stigma. Education-based interventions tend to emphasize biological causes of dependency; however, health care professionals still stigmatize people who use substances despite being more knowledgeable about biological causes. There may be an important moderating role of personal contact since health care professionals may treat people in the throes of dependency. We tested how substance use stigma may be explained by causal attributions, working in health care, and personal contact. A nationally representative sample of the U.S. general population (N = 6,812) was collected with targeted oversampling of health care professionals (N = 788). Using a vignette paradigm, desire for social distance was measured along with causal attributions and contact. Health care professionals were no less stigmatizing than the general population. However, attributing substance dependency to bad character was robustly associated with stigma, but these beliefs were moderated by the interaction between working in health care and contact. Mediation decomposition confirmed that contact transmitted its effect by lowering bad character attributions, and this mediation was significantly stronger for health care professionals. Health care professionals and the general population may hold similar levels of stigma when accounting for attributions, and personal contact plays an important role. We discuss the implications of these results for stigma-reduction campaigns and emphasize deconstructing personal culpability narratives surrounding substance use disorders. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH EDUCATION MODEL AMONG INDONESIAN WOMEN MIGRANT WORKERS

Reproductive health issues are one of the issues that migrant workers face. Therefore, it is crucial to prevent reproductive disorders to maintain migrant workers’ health. An effective prevention strategy is health education, which aims to increase migrant workers' knowledge and awareness about reproductive health. In Indonesia, there is still limited source of Reproductive Health Education Model for Indonesian Migrant Workers (IMWs). This study aims to assess the effectiveness of the model of reproductive health education which is created to improve health reproduction knowledge of Indonesian women migrant workers. This research is an quasi-experimental one group pre and post test design. The data were obtained from the intervention study that was carried out for migrant workers in Hong Kong in eight meetings. Sample for the intervention study was carried out by total sampling from a Indonesian women migrant worker community in Hongkong. Total of 36 people were involved in the study. Level of knowledge were assessed from the pre and post test conducted in training. Education-based interventions can improve migrant workers' reproductive health-related knowledge. Each given module significantly influences knowledge of respondents, with a p-value of each module is 0.000. The overall modules also show significant results with a p-value of 0.000 in increasing health reproduction knowledge of respondents. Indonesian women migrant workers should receive health reproduction education to increase their health reproduction knowledge.

Evaluation of Willingness to Accept COVID-19 Vaccine and Willingness to Pay among Pakistani Parents for Their Children Aged 5 to 11 Years: Findings and Implications.

Vaccines are the most efficient and cost-effective tool to halt the transmission and prevention of COVID-19. The current study examined the willingness of parents to vaccinate their children against COVID-19. This was a cross-sectional study that used a questionnaire based on the Health Belief Model, previous history of COVID-19, willingness to accept, and willingness to pay for the COVID-19 vaccine. The questionnaire was administered among parents of children aged 5 to 11 years. Descriptive statistics, χ2 tests, and regression analysis were carried out for data analysis. A total of 474 respondents participated in this survey with a response rate of 67.7%. In our study, a majority of the respondents exhibited a willingness to accept the COVID-19 vaccine for their children (Definitely yes/Probably yes = 252, 53.2%); nevertheless, 229 (48.3%) respondents were unwilling to pay for it. More than three-quarters of the respondents were worried about the probability of COVID-19 infection in their children (n = 361, 76.2%) and were afraid of COVID-19-associated complications (n = 391, 82.5%). Likewise, most respondents showed their concerns regarding the effectiveness of the vaccine (n = 351, 74.1%), vaccine safety (n = 351, 74.1%), and the halal nature of the vaccine (n = 309, 65.2%). Respondents who were aged 40 to 50 years (odds ratio [OR]: 0.101, 95% CI: 0.38-0.268; P < 0.001), family income > 50,000 PKR (OR: 0.680, 95% CI: 0.321-1.442; P = 0.012), and location (OR: 0.324, 95% CI: 0.167-0.628; P = 0.001) were the factors that were likely to impact vaccine acceptance among parents. Education-based interventions are urgently required to improve COVID-19 vaccination acceptance among parents for their children.

Culturally Tailored Dietary Interventions for Improving Glycaemic Control and Preventing Complications in South Asians with Type 2 Diabetes: Success and Future Implications.

Glycaemic control is the basis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) management and is crucial for preventing diabetes microvascular and macrovascular complications. The South Asian population is at higher risk of T2DM and resultant cardiovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease and death compared to Caucasians. Effective diabetes care has been deemed challenging in this population, but little is known about the usefulness of lifestyle interventions in improving glycaemic control and reducing complications. This narrative review aims to explore the efficacy of lifestyle interventions targeted to South Asians with T2DM in inducing clinically relevant improvements in HbA1c levels at such levels that reduce the risk of diabetes complications. A search of the literature using six databases (MEDLINE (EBSCOhost), PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Scopus) identified dietary-based, physical-activity-based and education-based interventions that aimed to manage T2DM in South Asians. Results showed that dietary and physical activity interventions (duration 3-12 months) have been effective in generating a clinically relevant decrease in HbA1c levels (≥0.5%) in South Asians with T2DM and could potentially assist in reducing diabetes complications. Education-based interventions produced small effects on glycaemic control. These outcomes support the development of comparable longer-term randomised clinical trials combining dietary and physical activity interventions with the aim to provide further evidence on specific interventions that can lower complications and ensure effective diabetes care in a high-risk population.

The "hearts-and-minds frame": Not all i-frame interventions are ineffective, but education-based interventions can be particularly bad.

Pitting i-frame policies against s-frame policies inadvertently propagates a false dichotomy that fails to distinguish between effective i-frame policies that directly change behaviors and ineffective education-based i-frame policies that try to change people's hearts and minds. We argue that people's fixation on changing hearts and minds may be an obstacle for behavioral science in policy.

The effectiveness of anti-stigma interventions for reducing mental health stigma in young people: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Experiencing mental health stigma during adolescence can exacerbate mental health conditions, reduce quality of life and inhibit young people's help-seeking for their mental health needs. For young people, education and contact have most often been viewed as suitable approaches for stigma reduction. However, evidence on the effectiveness of these anti-stigma interventions has not been consistent. This systematic review evaluated the effectiveness of interventions to reduce mental health stigma among youth aged 10-19 years. The review followed Cochrane and PRISMA guidelines. Eight databases were searched: PubMed, PsycINFO, MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, EMBASE, British Education Index and CNKI. Hand searching from included studies was also conducted. Randomised controlled trials and experimental designs that included randomised allocation to interventions and control groups were included in the review. Narrative synthesis was employed to analyse the results. A meta-analysis was conducted to determine the effectiveness of included interventions. Twenty-two studies were included in the review. Eight studies reported positive effects, 11 studies found mixed effects and 3 studies reported no effect on indicators of mental health stigma among youth. Seven of the effective studies were education-based. Eleven studies were suitable for meta-analysis, and the multivariate meta-analytic model indicated a small, significant effect at post-intervention (d = .21, p < .001), but not at follow-up (d = .069, p = .347). Interventions to reduce stigma associated with mental health conditions showed small, short-term effects in young people. Education-based interventions showed relatively more significant effects than other types of interventions.

CMS Initiative to Reduce Potentially Avoidable Hospitalizations Among Long-Stay Nursing Facility Residents: Lessons Learned.

In 2012, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services implemented the Initiative to Reduce Avoidable Hospitalizations Among Nursing Facility Residents. In Phase 1 (2012 to 2016), clinical or education-based interventions (Clinical-Only) aimed to reduce hospitalizations among long-stay nursing home residents. In Phase 2 (2016 to 2020), the Initiative also included a Medicare payment incentive for treating residents with certain conditions within the nursing home. Nursing homes participating in Phase 1 continued their previous interventions and received the incentive (Clinical + Payment) and others received the incentive only (Payment-Only). Mixed methods were used to determine the effectiveness of the Initiative and explore facilitators of and barriers to implementation that participating nursing homes experienced. We used telephone and in-person interviews to investigate aspects of implementation and a difference-in-differences regression model framework comparing residents in participating and nonparticipating nursing homes to determine the effect of the Initiative on measures of utilization, expenditures, and quality. Three key components were necessary for successful implementation of the Initiative-staff retention and leadership stability, leadership and staff support, and provider engagement and support. Nursing homes that lacked one or more of these three components experienced greater challenges. The Clinical-Only intervention in Phase 1 was successful in reducing hospitalizations. We did not find evidence that the Clinical + Payment or Payment-Only interventions were successful in reducing hospitalizations. Reducing hospitalizations among nursing home residents hinges upon the availability and support of clinical staff who can provide ongoing education to direct-care staff in the nursing home, as well as hands-on care. Use of Medicare payment incentives alone to encourage on-site treatment of residents was insufficient to reduce hospitalizations. Unless nursing homes are adequately staffed to treat residents with acute care needs, further reductions in hospitalizations will be difficult to achieve.

Glaucoma Knowledge and Disease Severity in a Veteran Population: The Medication Adherence in Glaucoma to Improve Care (MAGIC) Study

To assess the relationship between glaucoma knowledge and disease severity. Substudy of a randomized controlled trial at a single Veterans Affairs (VA) eye clinic. Veterans with medically treated open-angle glaucoma who self-reported poor medication adherence. Participants completed a glaucoma knowledge assessment using the 10-question National Eye Health Education Program (NEHEP) Eye-Q Test on glaucoma knowledge. Disease severity was determined using visual field criteria. Multiple linear regression was used to assess the association of NEHEP Eye-Q score and disease severity, adjusting for age, number of glaucoma medications, race, sex, and VA Care Assessment Needs (CAN) score. In this cross-sectional, preintervention analysis, the main outcome was glaucoma knowledge as measured by the NEHEP Eye-Q Test. Among the 200 study participants, glaucoma severity was mild in 53 (27%), moderate in 56 (28%), severe in 74 (37%), and indeterminant in 17 (9%). The NEHEP Eye-Q scores were low across all severity levels. Scored out of 10, the mean (standard deviation) NEHEP Eye-Q scores were 6.06 (1.57) for mild, 6.21 (1.47) for moderate, 6.28 (1.82) for severe, and 5.88 (1.93) for indeterminate stage. There was no evidence of a significant association between NEHEP scores and disease severity categories (P= 0.78). A regression model did not identify a significant estimated association between NEHEP Eye-Q scores and disease severity after adjusting for age, CAN risk score, number of glaucoma medications, race, and sex. There was no difference in level of glaucoma knowledge based on disease severity. Education-based interventions may benefit patients across all glaucoma stages. Abstract 183: Prioritizing Interventions To Reduce The Caregiver Burden Among Racially And Ethnically Diverse Co-survivors Of Cardiac Arrest Survivors: A Cross-sectional National Survey Study

Introduction: Cardiac arrest (CA) co-survivors i.e., close family members of CA survivors, have high levels of caregiver burden and poor quality of life. We aim to prioritize potential patient-, and co-survivor-centric interventions that may alleviate caregiver burden. Methods: We distributed an online survey to adult, co-survivor members of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation and Parent Heart Watch national databases and CA-specific Facebook groups. Participants provided demographics, details on their loved ones’ CA, and their caregiving role. They then ranked their top choice among 8 unique interventions focusing on either patient-centric education-based needs (n=4) or co-survivor-centric resources for self-care and enhanced psychological support (n=4). The survey was developed by a multidisciplinary research team and patient and co-survivor stakeholders. Results: Of 657 responses received, 550 co-survivors (57% were between the age of 18-40 years, 65% were women, 51% of minority race/ethnicity, 53% partners or spouse, an average of 8 hours of caregiving, for an average of 5 months) with the complete ranking data, were analyzed. A total of 347 (63%) co-survivors ranked patient-centric education-based interventions as their top choice ( Figure 1 shows distributions ). A multivariate model estimating the drivers of preferences for education-based interventions over co-survivors resource-based interventions showed age&gt;40 years, direct discharge to home after CA vs inpatient rehabilitation, co-survivor witnessing the CA, or assuming the caregiver role during hospitalization or within 1-month of CA, were significant predisposing factors. Conclusions: Education-based interventions, particularly information related to their loved ones’ recovery, are the top priorities for co-survivors during the early phase of CA survivorship. Future studies should focus on developing and testing these interventions for alleviation of caregiver burden.

Adolescents’ perspectives on soft drinks after the introduction of the UK Soft Drinks Industry Levy: A focus group study using reflexive thematic analysis

BackgroundThe UK Soft Drinks Industry Levy (SDIL), announced in March 2016 and implemented in April 2018, is a fiscal policy to incentivise reformulation of eligible soft drinks. We aimed to explore perceptions of sugar, sugary drinks and the SDIL among adolescents in the UK post-implementation. Methods23 adolescents aged 11–14 years participated in four focus groups in 2018–2019. A semi-structured topic guide elicited relevant perspectives and included a group task to rank a selection of UK soft drinks based on their sugar content. Braun and Clarke's reflexive thematic analysis was used to undertake inductive analysis. ResultsFour main themes were present: 1) Sweetened drinks are bad for you, but some are worse than others; 2) Awareness of the SDIL and ambivalence towards it 3) The influence of drinks marketing: value, pricing, and branding; 4) Openness to population-level interventions. Young people had knowledge of the health implications of excess sugar consumption, which did not always translate to their own consumption. Ambivalence and a mixed awareness surrounding the SDIL was also present. Marketing and parental and school restriction influenced their consumption patterns, as did taste, enjoyment and consuming drinks for functional purposes (e.g., to give them energy). Openness to future population-level interventions to limit consumption was also present. ConclusionsOur findings suggest that adolescents are accepting of interventions that require little effort from young people in order to reduce their sugar consumption. Further education-based interventions are likely to be unhelpful, in contexts where adolescents understand the negative consequences of excess sugar and SSB consumption.

Gambling Disorder and Stigma: Opportunities for Treatment and Prevention.

Purpose of ReviewGambling disorder is among the most stigmatized mental health problems. More research is needed to understand the mechanisms that underlie this stigma and the effects of stigma-reduction interventions. This paper reviews extant literature on the stigma of gambling disorder and highlights evidence from this research and the broader mental illness stigma literature to help advance research on the prevention and reduction of gambling-related stigma.Recent FindingThe public stigma of gambling disorder includes stereotypes of affected individuals as “greedy” and “irresponsible,” beliefs that affected individuals are to blame for their problems, and desire to avoid social contact with affected individuals. Stigmatizing attitudes held by the public are often internalized by individuals with gambling disorder, which leads to problem concealment, reduced treatment-seeking, and decreased self-esteem. Women with gambling disorder, as well as those with more severe gambling problems and who perceive greater stigma by the public, are most vulnerable to self-stigma. There is evidence that certain beliefs may underlie the stigmatization of gambling disorder, including beliefs about its causes. Contact- and education-based interventions show efficacy for the reduction of mental illness-related stigma more broadly; additional research is needed to determine the efficacy of various stigma reduction strategies for gambling disorder specifically.SummaryGambling disorder is highly stigmatized relative to other mental health problems, in part because it is viewed as more likely to be caused by controllable factors. Interventions that emphasize the biopsychosocial etiology of gambling disorder may help to prevent and reduce the blame and stigmatization of affected individuals. Structural stigma within domains such as legislation, healthcare, and the gambling industry, interventions to reduce self-stigma, stigma among mental health professionals, and the influence of culture on stigma and its reduction are critical issues for future research.

0594 Functional Limitations and Well-Being Throughout the Adult Lifespan: The Moderating Role of Sleep

Abstract Introduction Functional limitations represent individuals’ difficulty with completing essential activities of daily living, such as sitting, stooping, and walking. Though functional limitations have been linked to lower well-being outcomes, less is known about potential protective factors for well-being in the lived experience of functional limitations. This study aimed to examine the potential moderating effect of sleep quality on the association between functional limitations and life satisfaction, a common indicator of well-being, across the adult lifespan. Methods The present study used archival data from the Midlife in the United States Refresher study. Participants included 696 individuals (50.6% female, Mage=51.58 years, SD=13.61 years) who completed measures of functional limitations (Functional Status Questionnaire), global sleep quality (Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index), and life satisfaction (single-item measure). A moderated moderation analysis was conducted to examine the moderating role of sleep quality on the association between functional limitations and life satisfaction. Age was included as a secondary moderator in the analysis to determine differences between age groups (younger, middle-aged, elders). Demographic variables of gender and racial identity were used as covariates in study analyses. Results Participants’ global sleep score was a significant moderator of the association between functional limitation status and life satisfaction (B = 0.16, p &amp;lt; .001). Overall better global sleep quality buffered the association between higher functional limitations and worse life satisfaction. A significant three-way interaction between age, global sleep, and functional limitations was detected (β = -0.003, ΔR2 = .02, F(1, 686) = 12.25, p &amp;lt; .001). The effect of global sleep on the association between life satisfaction and functional limitation status was significant for younger adults (B = 0.07, p &amp;lt; .001) and middle-aged adults (B = 0.02, p = .0224), but not for elders (B = -0.02, p = .2223). Better global sleep quality buffered the negative association between functional limitations and life satisfaction specifically for younger and middle-aged adults. Conclusion The current study provided evidence for the importance of sleep quality in the lived experience of functional limitations, particularly for younger and middle-aged adults. This study contributes to a rapidly growing body of literature that seeks to identify protective factors for individuals experiencing lower functioning. In the future, clinicians should integrate sleep quality screeners in medical and mental health care settings in order to identify at-risk individuals who are experiencing functional limitations, and potentially consider establishing preventative, education-based interventions concerning sleep in the experience of functional limitations.
