Editors-in-chief publishing in dental journals: Concerns in self-publishing.

Editors-in-chief (EICs) have a significant amount of control over the publications that are accepted in their journals, which may result in ethical predicaments. This study investigates the potential conflict of interest of EICs from various dental journals by quantifying the number of their self-published articles during their years as EIC. Based on representation across many dental disciplines and high impact factors, 67 EICs from 19 dental journals during 1990-2023 were studied. To keep anonymity, each journal was randomly assigned a letter A-S and each editor-in-chief (EIC) was given the same letter as their journal with a random number 1-67. After gathering the years each EIC served, online library resources were searched to enumerate each EIC's lifetime publications and total self-publications during their term, excluding editorials for both counts. Descriptive statistics were performed to evaluate the results. The results indicate that 16 EICs self-published more than the average of 23.27 articles during their term. When considering EIC tenure, a ratio of self-publications per year was calculated, averaging 2.12 publications. Twenty-two EICs authored more articles annually than the average ratio. After calculating the impact factors of each EIC from the years they serviced their journal, a total of 22 impact factors exceeded the established mean of 2.45. Lastly, when comparing the percentage of self-publications from total lifetime publications, 24 of 67 EICs were above the average. Overall, a significantly increased number of self-publications was detected, presenting potential conflicts of interest for EICs. Therefore, it remains essential to develop clear guidelines and international standards regarding the practice of EICs self-publishing in their journals during their service term.

Afterlives of Saint-Simonianism: Michel Chevalier and nineteenth-century French liberalism

ABSTRACT This article examines the evolution of nineteenth-century French economist Michel Chevalier’s reputation and self-understanding as a Saint-Simonian. Despite only having served two years as chief editor of the famous Saint-Simonian Globe, Chevalier’s attempt to re-integrate himself into liberal intellectual circles following his split from the Saint-Simonian movement was consistently hindered by his perceived adherence to its illiberal principles. This article mobilizes Chevalier’s reputation as a means to explore the porous boundary between Saint-Simonianism and French liberalism at a time when the contours between the two traditions were still not clearly defined. I also argue that the economist’s continued prioritization of economic development over political liberty grounded a variety of liberalism that many political liberals found intolerable, notably in its willingness to endure Bonapartist authoritarianism for the sake of economic growth. Mobilizing new archival material from the Second Empire, this article illuminates how Chevalier and others understood his relation to Saint-Simonianism and liberalism in the moment when he was at the apogee of his power and influence.

HOW DID THE PANDEMIC AFFECT THE RESIZING OF TELEVISION NEWSROOMS IN ALBANIA?

The pandemic has brought a great surprise by transforming many dimensions of our lives, but it has undoubtedly also found the entire media industry unprepared. It has led to the paralysis of every political and economic activity, as well as of media systems, not only in Albania, but did not spare the information corporations all over the world. The immediate challenges faced by the media, particularly the traditional ones, were the collapse of information, job losses, decline in advertising, reduction of staff and budgets, biased information, decreased access to resources. In this article we aim to prepare a qualitative analysis, of how Covid-19 has re-dimensioned the editorial staff of information television in terms of organization and operation of daily basis of the journalist’s work. In the following, we have taken in consideration in our study three newsrooms of news televisions, such as: Syri Tv, Euronews and News 24. The methodology is based on qualitative interviews of the three relevant chief editors of the aforementioned media, such as: Bledian Koka, Anta Muçaku and Anila Jole. The survey of 23 journalists working in these newsrooms also provides quantitative data, concluding that today’s editorships bring many "innovations" and organizational "changes", that had not previously been embraced by classic TV editors, before the Covid 19.
