SPECIAL ISSUE ON SOUND, PERFORMANCE, AND CULTURAL HERITAGE: BETWEEN TRADITION, TECHNOLOGY, AND ARTISTIC PRACTICE
  • Apr 24, 2026
  • ShodhKosh: Journal of Visual and Performing Arts
  • Inesh Kdyrova + 5 more

This special issue is devoted to exploring the complex relationship between tradition and innovation in the fields of music and performance. It seeks to examine how cultural heritage is sustained and transformed within contemporary artistic environments shaped by digitalization, globalization, and interdisciplinary exchange. In this context, artistic practices are understood not as static representations of the past, but as dynamic processes that continuously negotiate meaning, identity, and cultural continuity. The contributions gathered in this issue reflect a wide range of perspectives, including ethnomusicology, performance studies, pedagogy, cultural studies, and digital humanities. Particular attention is given to the role of technological advancements – such as digital media, virtual environments, and artificial intelligence – in reshaping musical creativity, performance practices, and modes of cultural transmission. At the same time, the issue emphasizes the importance of educational and institutional frameworks in supporting the preservation and revitalization of intangible cultural heritage.By bringing together diverse methodological approaches and cultural perspectives, this special issue aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of how sound and performance function as key mechanisms of cultural resilience. It demonstrates that, even in an era of rapid technological advancement, artistic practices remain vital spaces for negotiating meaning, fostering creativity, and preserving the richness of cultural heritage. We sincerely thank all authors for their valuable contributions and the reviewers for their insightful feedback. We also express our gratitude to the editorial team for their support in the preparation of this issue. Introduction: Updates on AI, DEI, context, and partnerships
  • Apr 23, 2026
  • Frontiers: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Study Abroad
  • Elaine Meyer-Lee

In this annual update, I am pleased to report on several new initiatives of our editorial team and board to keep our journal publishing relevant scholarship on education abroad of the highest quality. As higher education around the world has been roiled by the many changes brought on by generative artificial intelligence, and as U.S. institutions are enduring an unprecedented federal assault on diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, our board has helped our journal navigate both challenges. In addition, we have conducted an informative exercise to map our position relative to adjacent journals in our context. I want to acknowledge the key role of our executive editorial assistant Dr. Anas N. Almassri in shepherding these initiatives. Finally, if you have not yet heard our announcements, we have now welcomed two premier sponsoring partners: CEA CAPA and The Center for Research on Abroad and International Student Engagement (RAISE Center) at Wake Forest University. Both partners will bring new joint content and programming while strengthening our editorial independence, thanks to the deft work of our managing editor Dr. Amelia J. Dietrich.

Vulnerability, Context and Ethical Practice: The African Journal of Bioethics at Volume 3
  • Apr 13, 2026
  • African Journal of Bioethics
  • Mercury Shitindo

Volume 3, Issue 1 of the African Journal of Bioethics arrives at a moment worth pausing on. Over the past three volumes, this journal has been doing the internal work that turns a publication into a platform: strengthening peer review processes, building editorial capacity, training the team, developing an active and engaged editorial board, and growing a community of authors and reviewers, whose expertise spans the continent. These are the foundations that make everything else possible – including, this year, a publishing partnership with Pluto Journals and hosting on ScienceOpen that extends the reach of this work to a wider global audience. From its founding, this journal has operated on a clear conviction: that bioethics on this continent is being done, rigorously, contextually, and consequentially, and that it deserves a publishing home built around that reality. African perspectives are not supplements to global bioethics discourse. They are constitutive of it. The AJB exists to make that case through the quality of what it publishes, not through assertion. None of what appears in this issue arrived without effort. Our peer reviewers gave time and expertise that remains largely uncompensated. Our authors trusted this platform with work that matters to them. The editorial team has invested in this journal as a long-term project, not a transaction. That investment is what these pages represent.

Exercise, Sport, and Movement: 2024 Paper of the Year
  • Apr 1, 2026
  • Exercise, Sport and Movement
  • Jennifer J Heisz

Each year, the Exercise, Sport, and Movement (ESM) editorial team recognizes research that exemplifies innovation, methodological rigor, and meaningful impact. We celebrate papers that not only advance the science of exercise but also inspire new ways of understanding human movement. From among the papers published in the previous year, one is selected as the ESM Paper of the Year. For 2024, we are pleased to recognize “Physical Activity Patterns in Adolescents and Adults With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities” by Dr Brian C. Helsel and colleagues (1). This outstanding work advances movement science and reflects our field’s commitment to inclusivity and equitable access to physical activity for all. EXPANDING THE EVIDENCE BASE FOR MOVEMENT EQUITY Although physical activity is one of the strongest determinants of health, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) remain underrepresented in research. Helsel and colleagues address this long-standing gap with one of the most comprehensive studies to date. Using device-based monitoring of 330 participants aged 10–70 yr, the authors reveal meaningful disparities. On average, participants engaged in just 14 min of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day, and only 12.4% met recommended moderate-to-vigorous physical activity guidelines. As Director of Fitness & Healthy Lifestyles at Special Olympics International and ESM’s Editorial Board Member and Inclusion Excellence Consultant, Melissa M. Otterbein, MPH, CHES, ACSM-PAPHS, observes, “This article stands out for its inclusivity and breadth of demographics, particularly its rare focus on older adults with IDD.” By extending their work beyond children and youth to include participants up to 70 years of age, Helsel and colleagues highlight an aspect of movement equity that has historically received limited attention. Their research underscores the need for more data that captures the full diversity of age and ability. ADVANCING ECOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES ON MOVEMENT One of the most important aspects of this work is its capacity to reorient how we think about disability, not as a deficit to be overcome, but as part of the diverse ecological landscape of human movement. For decades, research on individuals with IDD has depended largely on self-reports, which can be shaped by circumstance, communication, and context. Helsel and colleagues move the field forward using continuous, device-based measures that capture movement as it unfolds in real time. This approach depicts the natural rhythms of everyday activity with a degree of detail and precision and generates a more complete picture of behavioral patterns. Their findings show how structure and setting matter by revealing how activity levels rise during school or work hours but fall in the mornings, evenings, and weekends, lending support for the “structured day” hypothesis. Their analysis of seasonal patterns further highlights the link between environment and activity, and their age-based analyses reveal how movement patterns change across adolescence through adulthood. Together, these insights suggest strategies for designing programs that sustain structure while supporting independence. By situating disability within its social and temporal contexts, Helsel and colleagues remind us that physical activity is not defined solely by an individual’s ability but also the rhythms of daily life and the structures and systems that organize it. As Associate Editor-in-Chief Katrina DuBose, PhD, FACSM, explains, “This work offers a clearer understanding of the physical activity behaviors in individuals with IDD, paving the way for practitioners to develop tailored programs and for families to receive evidence-based guidance.” TRANSLATING EVIDENCE INTO INCLUSIVE PRACTICE Honoring this work as the 2024 ESM Paper of the Year recognizes more than excellence; it reflects the field’s ongoing evolution toward greater inclusivity. Helsel and colleagues’ findings suggest that accessibility and structure are important considerations in understanding human movement. Their results indicate that educational, occupational, and environmental systems may influence opportunities for physical activity among individuals with IDD. The next challenge lies in translating these insights into programs, policies, and practices that reflect the realities of diverse lives. Progress will depend on sustained collaboration among researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and individuals with lived experience. As movement science continues to grow, inclusivity must remain a guiding principle, ensuring that individuals of all abilities are adequately represented in both data and design. CONCLUSION Helsel et al’s “Physical Activity Patterns in Adolescents and Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities” exemplifies the core values of an ESM Paper of the Year: significance, innovation, and transformative impact. By filling a long-standing gap, it extends the reach of movement science toward greater inclusivity and understanding and demonstrates that advancing scientific understanding and promoting equity are fundamentally linked goals. CONFLICTS OF INTEREST AND SOURCE OF FUNDING The author has no conflicts of interest or funding sources to report.

  • Riyadh Hossain + 4 more

We, the Editors and Publisher of the journal International Journal of Environmental Health Research, have retracted the following article: Riyadh Hossain, Tahmina Akter, Mohammad Omar Faruk, Sorif Hossain & Md. Rasel Hossain (20 Jul 2025): Impact of environmental factors on the spread of dengue fever in the United States of America (USA), International Journal of Environmental Health Research, DOI: 10.1080/09603123.2025.2534420 After publication, concerns have been raised by a third party about the integrity of the data in the article. Further investigations conducted by the Journal and Publisher confirmed the following: The introduction section of the article includes claims which do not appear to be supported by the cited sources regarding the incidence of Dengue cases in the USA; The introduction section of the article includes references which do not appear to relate to the the incidence of Dengue cases in the USA; Upon reanalysis the Journal and Publisher were unable to generate the same data depicted in Figures 1 and 2 from the referenced source data. When approached for an explanation, the authors have clarified that in the introduction, they incorrectly attribute the incidence of Dengue cases to the USA, whilst the information is actually for the Americas. The authors confirmed that the incorrect supporting references have been included. As the editorial team no longer have confidence in the reported conclusions due to the significant data integrity concerns, we are retracting the article. The corresponding authors listed in this publication have been notified. The authors do not agree with the retraction. We have been informed in our decision-making by our editorial policies and the COPE guidelines. The retracted article will remain online to maintain the scholarly record, but it will be digitally watermarked on each page as ‘Retracted’.

Investigating the Perception of Peer Review Quality – A German-Swiss Vignette Study
  • Mar 17, 2026
  • Quantitative Science Studies
  • Robert Neumann + 5 more

Abstract In addition to publication and knowledge dissemination, the selection and peer review of scientific articles are among the central contributions of journals to scholarly communication. Feedback from researchers about inconsistencies in the review process and the resignation of entire editorial teams following a dispute about journal business models point to problems that often concern the interaction between academic editors and commercial publishers. In order to provide empirical evidence regarding expectations and perceptions towards the peer review process, this study reports the results of two experimental factorial surveys embedded in a two-country study across 25 German and Swiss research institutions. It uses answers submitted by more than 3,200 scholars across 15 scientific fields on the topic of review and decision practices to further the debate about the future of scholarly publishing given existing role conflicts, extractive entrepreneurial strategies and potential decrease in scientific quality.
