The digital era has an impact on changing new work patterns in journalism, "Churnalism" is a new journalism that occurs as a consequence of the development of digital technology in the modern era. Churnalism is the simplicity of the way to obtain journalistic news content caused by technological advances. Churnalism threatens the quality of news in the digital era. JPNN.com is a news media that was established in 2008, experiencing a transition from the print media era to digital media. This research focuses on finding out and understanding JPNN.com media strategies in balancing Churnalism and journalism. This research is a qualitative research with a descriptive analysis approach, aiming to understand the process of Churnalism practice JPNN.com and understand their strategies in an effort to balance Churnalism and journalism. The results of this study show that JPNN.com has its own strategy in balancing Churnalism and journalism, namely a combination strategy, combining the practice of Churnalism with conventional journalism practices. The implementation of the combination strategy is carried out in six stages, including: First, journalists select potential news materials from online sources. Second, journalists research news materials to ensure the validity of the news. Third, journalists confirm with the source. Fourth, journalists combine Churnalism and conventional journalism in the reporting process. Fifth, the editor maintains the Gatekeeper function through news selection. Sixth, the editorial management conducts news every day.

A Showcase Presentation Honoring the Editorial Board of Clinics in Dermatology

For over forty years, the Editorial Board of Clinics in Dermatology has been working behind the scenes to help our Editor-in Chief, Dr. Lawrence Parish, bring to readers the best contributions in dermatology. Herein, we tell the story of the beginnings of Clinics in Dermatology and provide a list of the inaugural board members of which we highlight four: Drs. Jean Civatte, John Thorne Crissey, Francisco Kerdal-Vegas, and Joseph A. Witkowski. In addition we showcase our present 44 Editorial Board members including our Managing Editor Dr. Hirak Behari Routh,our Senior Deputy Editors Dr. Larry E. Millikan, and Dr. Marcia Ramos-e-Silva, and our esteemed Chief Editor Dr. Lawrence Charles Parish and Chief Editor Designate, Dr. Vinod E. Nambudiri. We are proud that all our Editorial Board members come with stellaracademic achievements in dermatology and from all over the world. We are an active Editorial Board, who work together, issue after issue, to provide the best in peer review contributions and theme issues. We look forward to continuing in this role for many years to come and weare grateful to our current publisher, Elsevier, and to our many authors, and dear readers for their ongoing support and encouragement.

Identification of SUMOylation-related signature genes associated with immune infiltration in ulcerative colitis through bioinformatics analysis and experimental validation

ObjectiveUlcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory disorder challenging to diagnose clinically. We focused on identifying and validating SUMOylation-related signature genes in UC and their association with immune infiltration. MethodsFive eligible gene expression profiles were selected from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database and merged into a single dataset comprising 260 UC patients and 76 healthy controls (HC). Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, and these were intersected with SUMOylation-related genes to obtain differentially expressed SUMOylation-related genes (DESRGs). Next, we identify the signature genes and validate them through comprehensive analyses employing GO, KEGG, GSVA, Lasso-cox regression, ROC curves, and clustering analysis. The infiltrating immune cells were analyzed using the CIBERSORT algorithm and Pearson correlation analysis. Finally, in vitro and in vivo experiments validated the identified signature genes. ResultsPALMD, THRB, MAGED1, PARP1, and SLC16A1 were identified. Next, an excellent predictive model for UC was established and distinct subgroups of patients associated with SUMOylation were identified. Moreover, the NF-κB signaling pathway likely plays a pivotal role in the regulation of SUMOylation in UC. Additionally, we validated that the alterations in PALMD, THRB, and MAGED1 expression in LPSinduced Caco-2 cells concurred with our bioinformatics findings, particularly demonstrating statistically significant differences in PALMD and THRB expression. Finally, in a DSS-induced mouse colitis model, we observed a significant upregulation of PALMD expression. Powered by Editorial Manager® and ProduXion Manager® from Aries Systems Corporation. ConclusionThis study comprehensively elucidates the biological roles of SUMOylation-related genes in UC, identifying PALMD, MAGED1, THRB, PARP1, and SLC16A1 as signature genes that represent promising biomarkers for UC diagnosis and prognosis.

A Single Institution Experience in the Management of Localized Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of the Bladder

BackgroundNeuroendocrine carcinoma of the bladder (NEC-bladder) is a rare disease with poor outcomes and variable treatment approaches. Materials and MethodsPatients with localized NEC-bladder treated with surgery or radiation between 2001-2021 were retrospectively identified. Rates of pathologic complete response (pCR) and downstaging were evaluated following NAC in surgically-treated patients. Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were analyzed with univariable (log-rank) and multivariable (MVA; Cox regression) methods. ResultsSixty-five patients were identified having a median age of 73. The tumor histology distribution was small cell (64.6%) or urothelial with NE differentiation (35.4%). Most patients (69.2%) received NAC. Patients received local therapy by surgery (78.5%) or chemoradiation (21.5%). The majority (62.7%) of surgical patients had ≥ pT2 with 37.3% having nodal involvement (pN+). The pCR and downstaging rates were 21.6% and 35.1%, respectively. At a median follow-up of 60 months (m), the median PFS and OS were 16.4m and 25.9m, respectively. NAC improved PFS (p=0.04) and downstaging improved PFS (p=0.012) and OS (p<0.001). Patients receiving NAC with ypN0 vs. ypN+ had median OS of 69.9m vs 15.3m, respectively (p<0.001). MVA identified receipt of NAC and pN as predictors of PFS; pN was predictive of OS. No differences in PFS or OS were seen between histology of primary tumor. The brain metastasis rate was 10.8% with all patients having small cell histology. ConclusionsOptimized therapy in NEC-bladder includes NAC followed by local consolidation. Ascertainment of ypN0 is associated with long term survival, while pN+ remains associated with poor outcomes.

As part of our collaboration with Cosmovisiones/Cosmovisões we will publish the English translations of the abstracts from that journal. This is to give better awareness of the Cultural Astronomy research that is being published there in Spanish and Portuguese. There have been three issues so far and we will publish the abstracts of each one separately, this being the first. Cosmovisiones/Cosmovisões will also publish the abstracts of the Journal of Astronomy in Culture in Spanish translations. Additionally, it is intended for each of the two journals to occasionally select and republish a translated article from the other. This will enhance the cognizance of the related research and its authors. Outpatient vs. inpatient designation in total hip arthroplasty: can we predict who will require hospitalization?

Following removal of total hip arthroplasty (THA) from the inpatient only (IPO) list by the Center for Medicare Services (CMS), arthroplasty surgeons face increased pressure to perform procedures on an outpatient (OP) basis. The purposes of the present study were to compare patients booked for THA as OP who required conversion to IP status postoperatively, to patients who were booked as, and remained OP, and to identify factors predictive of conversion from OP to IP status. We retrospectively reviewed all patients who underwent a primary THA at our institution between January 1, 2020 and April 26, 2022. All patients included were originally scheduled for OP surgery and were separated based on conversion to IP status postoperatively. Multiple regression analyses were used to determine the significance of all perioperative variables. Modeling via binary logistic regressions were used to determine factors predictive of status conversion. Of 1,937 patients, 372 (19.2%) designated as OP preoperatively required conversion to IP status postoperatively. These patients had significantly higher facility discharge rates (P < 0.001) and 90-day readmission rates (P = 0.024). Patients aged 65 and older (P < 0.001), females (P < 0.001), patients with Black/African American race (P = 0.027), with a recovery room arrival time after 12pm (P < 0.001), with a BMI > 30kg/m2 (P = 0.001), and with a Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) ≥ 4 (P = 0.013) were Powered by Editorial Manager® and ProduXion Manager® from Aries Systems Corporation more likely to require conversion to IP designation. Marital status and time of procedure were also significant factors, as patients who were married (P < 0.001) and who were the first case of the day (P < 0.001) were less likely to be converted to IP. Several factors were identified which could help determine appropriate hospital designation status at the time of surgical booking to ultimately avoid insurance claim denials. These included BMI, certain demographic factors, CCI ≥ 4, and patients 65 or older. Retrospective Cohort Study.

This reflective narrative chronicles a transformative journey of an educator’s experience teaching in a private Christian school and the subsequent pursuit of research on the spiritual formation of Generation Z students. Drawing upon Dewey’s notion of reflection and a comprehensive review of the literature and spiritual development theories, the author examines why students in Christian schools identify teachers as the primary influence in their spiritual formation. This reflection explores the complexity of spiritual development, the challenges posed by Generation Z students’ digital native characteristics, and the feelings of inadequacy among teachers in fostering spiritual formation. Guided by Greenberger’s reflective framework and Dewey’s principle of continuity, the author aims to deepen her understanding of students’ perceptions and cultivate confidence and aptitude in supporting students’ spiritual growth. The analysis highlights teachers’ multifaceted roles as trusted confidants, mentors, role models, and spiritual guides, transcending the boundaries of academic instruction. The reflective practice findings emphasize the authenticity and modeling of faith by teachers and relationship building, which creates a powerful environment where students observe and internalize the practical application of Christian principles. Additionally, the study considers the varying stages of faith among students and the need for teachers to adapt their roles and approaches accordingly.

In this reflective practice piece, two instructors grapple with the unexpectedly disappointing results of a culminating digital portfolio in a professional writing program. Instructors had hoped students would approach the digital portfolio as a tool in the job market to showcase their writing skills and interests. Instead, we found that despite the program-wide emphasis on crafting and selecting pieces for this final capstone project, students’ portfolios did not reflect the level of professionalism we anticipated regarding the selection of work and overall design. We were concerned that students viewed this as just another assignment instead of a tool that would support them in the job market. In reflecting on the disconnect between our expectations and the student’s approach to the project, and in conversation with the theory of self-focus in the life-stage of emerging adulthood (Arnett, 2016) and the need for additional guidance on large projects such as these (Lam, 2020; Ring et al., 2017), we instituted portfolio check-ins. These one-on-one meetings with the instructor augmented the peer reviews already in the course to provide the perspective of how a possible employer might evaluate their portfolio and other considerations for strengthening their work. Future research will look to survey program graduates to get a better sense of if and how the portfolios are used post-graduation.

In this manuscript, two professors sought to reflect on personal discoveries from their recent research collaboration examining the relationship between strengths-based teaching and students’ self-efficacy. The findings of their study indicated that educators in higher education institutions who employ a strengths-based teaching approach that focuses on students’ capabilities, opportunities, and possibilities while creating a growth mindset, resiliency, and agency can improve students’ self-efficacy. As educators, we regularly engage in reflective practice to enhance and improve our teaching strategies. Through reflection, we were able to examine the revelations from our research and explore how we could effectively implement these practices in our teaching to highlight our students’ strengths and help them build a foundation for lifelong learning and improved self-efficacy.

Systematic review on Artificial Intelligence in the editorial management of scientific journals

INTRODUCTION: scientific journals play a crucial role in the dissemination and validation of scientific knowledge, and editorial management ranges from conceptualization to post-publication of content. Artificial intelligence (AI) has had a great impact on scientific communication and editorial management of scientific journals. AI can offer solutions and benefits for editorial management, but it also poses technical, economic, social and ethical challenges that should be considered and approached with caution and responsibility. OBJECTIVE: to describe the benefits and limitations of the use of AI in the editorial management of scientific journals through a systematic literature review. METHOD: a systematic literature review was conducted based on the PRISMA methodology. An information search was carried out in different bibliographic database systems, indexing systems and search engines, and inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to the identified studies. RESULTS: the information search allowed retrieving a total of 2750 sources, of which 10 articles that met the stated criteria were included. Benefits such as the facilitation of writing, translation, review and editing tasks were identified, as well as limitations related to ethical issues, bias, errors and plagiarism generated by AI. CONCLUSIONS: While AI can streamline the production and analysis of information distribution, it also poses challenges in terms of reliability, ethics and authenticity of published content. It requires the critical involvement of human intelligence for proper exploitation.

Creating Interpretative Spaces in and with Digital Infrastructures: How Editors Select Reviewers at a Biomedical Publisher

Digital infrastructures, such as editorial management systems (EMS), play a crucial role in academic publishing. However, despite their ubiquity, they have received surprisingly little analytical attention. Here, we investigate how EMSs are employed in practice and contribute to editorial evaluations. Conducting a case study of a biomedical publisher, we investigate the selection of peer reviewers by editors, using both qualitative and quantitative data. When looking at how interactions between editors and the digital infrastructures unfold, we observed three analytically different types of interaction: (1) editors and infrastructure jointly accomplish the acceleration of peer review, (2) editors mitigate the infrastructure when establishing a collective memory, and (3) editors disengage from the infrastructure when they evaluate potential reviewers. Through strategic disengagement from and mitigation of the infrastructures, editors create interpretative spaces for themselves. This way, most of the interpretative and evaluative work still remains in the domain of the human editorial staff. Our results furthermore highlight the importance of the specific spatial, social, organizational, and cultural conditions of the editorial office for editors’ ability to modulate their engagement with the infrastructures, create interpretative spaces, and shape infrastructural effects.

Editorial management is the main key in managing online news content, especially in Kanalindonesia.com as a relevant and dynamic information media. This study aims to determine the editorial management strategies and practices applied by Kanalindonesia.com in presenting information effectively and up-to-date. The research method used is descriptive analysis with a qualitative approach. Data was collected through interviews, observations, and analysis of online news content published by Kanalindonesia.com. The results showed that the editorial management carries the approach of Planning, Organizing, Actuating, and Controlling. The process of collecting, editing, and disseminating news is carried out in a structured and efficient manner in accordance with journalistic principles. The selection of topics, the use of reliable sources of information, and the application of ethical journalism principles are the main focuses in presenting news. In addition, Kanalindonesia.com also implements controls on news content products that are carried out once a month. This is in order to form management that carries responsibility and can achieve the goals of the company.

Implementation of Gontornews.com Online Media Editorial Management

Gontornews.com is a boarding school website owned by Pondok Modern Gontor which has online media. The purpose of this study is to find out how management and editorial limitations are implemented at Gontornews.com, which includes matters such as planning, organizing, executing/directing, and supervising. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with case studies found on Gontornews.com, an online website. Primary and secondary data are collected through in-depth interviews with various relevant sources. This study was conducted from June to July 2022 in Jakarta. The results of the study show that Gontornews.com editorial management is used in reporting through various stages, starting from making plans, working with editorial members, sending news, and using references to books, newspapers, magazines, and other sources on the Internet. However, this study found that, even though the editorial management of Gontornews.com is very good, there are some obstacles in the news production process, such as limited reporters from within and outside the city, publication deadlines, and limited time for reporters who are out of sync. While there are some limitations, such as language limitations, external sources, and website systems, these obstacles can be overcome.
