Inside the November 2024 Issue

Dear Readers, We are thrilled to bring you the second issue of the ninth volume of POCUS Journal. Published since 2016, POCUS Journal is the only multi-disciplinary, peer-reviewed, POCUS-focused journal that is free for authors and readers alike. This issue features a variety of POCUS articles from around the world: from North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and even Australia. In addition to novel cases with striking POCUS images and video clips, this issue boasts a great deal of educational research at all levels: Danila et al. (page 80) report on their study of how POCUS can augment a medical student preclinical cardiovascular course while Piro et al. (page 93) studied the impact of just-in-time POCUS curriculum on internal medicine residents; Janjigian et al. (page 109) studied the longitudinal impact of a faculty POCUS training course. POCUS is a powerful tool with a wide range of applications: for example, it can be used both to diagnose musculoskeletal conditions (Doblinger et al. page 15 and Mack et al. page 27) and to treat musculoskeletal conditions (Bowling et al page 12, and McCreary et al. page 30). POCUS can also be used to predict heart failure readmission (Malagón et al. page 125). We are so excited to showcase pivotal POCUS scholarship like this in the November issue. Meet Our New Editorial Board Members of Spotlights

REMEMBER: 30 YEARS SINCE CONSTANTIN ARSENI PASSED AWAY - THE FONDATOR OF ROMANIAN NEUROSURGERY

Introduction The authors will present one of the great personalities of Romanian neurosurgery, Dr Constantin Arseni, who created it in Bucharest, creating the largest university centre of neurosurgery in Europe at that time. Material After the tragic loss of his mentor Prof. Dr Dumitru Bagdasar in 1946, Dr Constantin Arseni, took over the management of the neurosurgery service at the Central Hospital for Mental, Nervous and Endocrinologic Diseases, the only department of this kind in this country; He was able to have the first Clinic of Neurosurgery from Romania. For his merits, Dr Constantin Arseni, became an Associate Professor in 1952 and University Professor in 1963. His neurosurgical activity was complex, but mainly focused on tumoral pathology, cerebral and spinal, and also on spinal degenerative disease. Under Professor C. Arseni, the Neurosurgical Clinic of Bucharest is transformed in 1975 into the “Prof. Dr D. Bagdasar” Clinical Hospital of Neurosurgery, the largest hospital of Neurosurgery in the Europe, with 550 beds and, subsequently, 650 beds. Also, he developed the departments of neurosurgery in each of the biggest university centres in the country; while being the first President of the Romanian Society of Neurosurgery. Scientific Activity Scientific activity of Prof. Dr Constantin Arseni includes the numerous publications (54 treaties and monographies), together with all his collaborators, encompassing all domains of neurosurgery: Tumoral, Neuropathological, Vascular, Paediatric, Spinal Degenerative Pathology, Central Nervous System Malformations, History, etc. with high international visibility. An editorial board under C. Arseni published, with the substantial contribution of the Bucharest Medical Publishing House of the Clinic, the “Treatise of Neurology” in 8 volumes (1979-1981). Conclusions Professor Constantin Arseni was a dedicated surgeon, he practiced his job asking from those around him as much as he offered - the maximum. He was a schoolmaster and a teacher in the true sense of word. Professor Constantin Arseni, Member of the Romanian Academy, was an exemplary professional, a model of conduct, which will forever remain in our memory, of the neurosurgeons, and of the Romanian neurosurgery, leaving behind a legacy hard to match for those who followed him.

Translation and cultural adaptation of the Long Coronavirus Disease (COVID) Symptom and Impact Tools for the Chilean population.

The Long Coronavirus Disease (COVID) Symptom and Impact Tools (ST and IT) were published in English in 2022 to monitor the symptoms and impact of persistent COVID-19. ST includes 53 symptoms selected by the patient. IT includes six aspects of life that the patient must rate from 1 to 10 points. We aim to report the results of the cultural adaptation of both instruments for the Chilean population, together with the content validity of the adapted instrument. The cultural adaptation was carried out in five steps: 1) translation from English to Spanish, 2) synthesis, 3) back-translation, 4) review by the editorial board, and 5) testing the questionnaire with ten patients; they answered both questionnaires and seven questions assessing their understanding of the TI and their opinion on whether the instrument reflected the impact of prolonged COVID-19 on their lives. The content validity of the final version of the IT was assessed by 14 experts. The main outcome is the two final questionnaires adapted for use in Chile. Most patients responded with the best concept or approval for all items. Content validity showed acceptable results, with an average content validity index of 0.9 and Aiken's V for the relevance of the questionnaire in general of 0.83 (95% CI 0.69 to 0.92). For one item, Aiken's V was less than 0.7 (95% CI 0.5 to 0.8). This study provides Chilean health authorities and health providers with an instrument for assessing the impact of prolonged COVID-19 on core aspects of people's lives.

Retirement of Dr. Denis McCarthy from the Editorial Board

To the 60th anniversary of Igor Vitalievich Poddubny

Prof. Igor V. Poddubny, a member of the Editorial Board of the Russian Journal of Pediatric Surgery, Dr. Sci. (med), celebrated his 60th anniversary on September 25, 2024. The basic area of his interest and research is mini-invasive endoscopic surgeries in children and adolescents. He has developed and implemented into clinical practice modern surgical techniques for treating children with various emergency and elective surgeries in urology, coloproctology and gynecology. He was the first in Russia to perform endoscopic surgical interventions for varicocele, abdominal cryptorchidism, cysts of parenchymal organs of the abdominal cavity and retroperitoneal space, as well as laparoscopic nephrectomy, heminephroterectomy, adrenalectomy. He also operated patients with Hirschsprung's disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, colon polyposis, complex malformations of the uterus and vagina, etc.

The Editorial Board mistakenly accepted the paper of Galai M.S., Sidorova E.S. "Modeling of the heat transfer process during thermite welding of railway rails", previously published in Volume 20, № 1 (2024) (DOI 10.18822/byusu20240254-59), and accidentally published it for the second time. For this reason, the mistakenly re-published paper by Galai M.S., Sidorova E.S. has now been removed from Volume 20, № 2 (2024). The information on the website has also been updated. Conflict and Context: Jadidism, Pan-Islamism, and the Muslims of Akmolinsk at the Beginning of the 20th Century

Abstract This article analyzes a conflict between the imam of Akmolinsk’s Second Congregational Mosque Hujjat Mahmudov and the Tatar merchant Nur-Muhammad Zabirov. The conflict took place in 1912–1913, and attracted the attention of the public at large, editorial boards of Muslim newspapers, and the Russian colonial administration. The depictions of the conflict were contradictory and depended on who was telling the story: the immediate participants, residents of Akmolinsk, or external observers. When the imam accused the Tatar merchant of ignorance and a grossly over-extravagant lifestyle, the merchant’s defenders immediately accused the imam of spreading forbidden innovations and selling banned literature, i.e., the works by the Kazakh writer Mir-Zhaqïp Dulatov and the editor of the newspaper Waqït, Fatih Karimi. These works were regarded by imperial officials as politically dangerous on account of containing false information about the Romanov Dynasty, as well as Pan-Turkic and Pan-Islamic ideas. At first glance, the Akmolinsk story appears to illustrate how Muslims themselves made use of the imperial discourse about the threat of jadidism and Pan-Islamism to eliminate their enemies; but it also exhibits a series of distinct peculiarities. My aim is to show that it is not so much the conflict as such that is important, but rather the context in which it arose. A careful study of this context allows us to understand the principles by which the local society functioned. Focusing on specific representations of the conflict (newspaper accounts, the point of view of imperial bureaucrats, the petitions of the immediate participants), we ignore the epistemic value of other sources – for example, the opinions of local Muslims who do not necessarily describe what happened through the prism of fundamental contradictions and imply, among other things, the confrontation between so-called reformers and traditionalists. The Muslims of Akmolinsk, like those of other regions of the Russian Empire, were aware of the nature of external threats and challenges; however, they could also perceive them based on their own rationality as expressed in their prevailing cultural and everyday life. In some cases, that rationality was draped in pragmatism; in others, it stemmed from an attempt to protect cultural self-sufficiency – that is, a specific world of ideas and values; in yet others, it was justified by the need to carry out those small reforms and changes that could fit organically into the customary course of things.

Interview with Professor Colin Murrell

Prof. Colin Murrell, a distinguished microbiologist and Emeritus Professor at the University of East Anglia, UK, is well known for his contributions to various areas of environmental microbiology and microbial ecology. Prof. Murrell has received several awards, including election to membership of the European Molecular Biology Organisation, the European Academy of Microbiology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences Distinguished Professor (Einstein) Award. He was awarded a highly prestigious European Research Council Advanced Grant and has been member of many editorial boards of leading microbiological journals including Environmental Microbiology and the ISME Journal. He has graduated over 60 PhD students and supervised around 150 researchers throughout his career. His research interests are immense, extending from the development of analytical tools in molecular microbial ecology to their testing in the field, which is reflected in his extensive publication list of over 350 highly cited papers in prestigious journals. His pioneering research has significantly improved our understanding of microbial processes in diverse environments, from soil to aquatic and marine ecosystems. More recently, he has extended his scientific curiosity to karst and caves, in particular to the Movile Cave in Romania, which represents a cornerstone for understanding the role of chemolithoautotrophy in caves.
