Rare Case of Fibroadenoma within Ectopic Breast Tissue in Axilla – A Case Report and Review of Literature

The congenital anomalies of breast, especially the polymastia (supernumerary breast) and polythelia (supernumerary nipple), can have varied presentations, associated renal anomalies, and pathologies arising from them. The axillary polymastia is a variant of ectopic breast tissue (EBT). Ectopic breast tissue can undergo the same physiological and pathological processes as the normally located breast. The incidence of fibroadenoma developing in ectopic breast is reported as a rare entity, the most common being the carcinoma. Here we report a case of fibroadenoma developing in ectopic breast tissue located in axilla.

Developmental abnormalities of breast can lead to formation of ectopic breast tissue which may present as polymastia or polythelia or in form of swelling along the milk line. Ectopic breast tissue can also develop pathological changes similar to normal located breast tissue. This report is about a case of fibroadenoma developing in ectopic breast tissue of axilla. A thirty-four-year-old female presented with painful swelling in right axilla for 2 years and was diagnosed with fibroadenoma of axillary tail of right breast. Excision biopsy of the swelling confirmed the diagnosis of fibroadenoma. Fibroadenoma must be considered for any axillary swelling along with other differential diagnoses like lymphadenopathy, carcinoma arising from ectopic breast tissue, lipoma, sebaceous cyst, tuberculosis, vascular lesions, cutaneous malignancies or secondaries in lymph nodes. Ectopic breast tissue should be subjected to similar evaluation and screening as is recommended for normally located breast tissue. The patient should also be evaluated for possibility of kidney and urinary tract malformations.

Fibroadenoma of ectopic breast tissue is a rare disease. It is very important to rule out malignancy as carcinoma commonly occurs in ectopic breast tissue. Here we report a case of 48 years old female presenting with complaints of swelling in right axilla since 3 months. Fine needle aspiration cytology suggested fibroadenoma of right breast. Ultrasonography of axilla revealed no other swellings apart from the fibroadenoma. Patient underwent excision and biopsy. Histopathology confirmed it as fibroadenoma of the ectopic breast tissue.

Bilateral fibroadenoma of the ectopic breast tissue in axilla: A case report

Anomalies associated with breast development are common, presenting as supernumerary nipples (polythelia) and less often as supernumerary breast (polymastia) in 1–5% of population. These anomalies are more common in women and also most frequently located along the mammary line, extending from the axilla to pubic region. The axillary polymastia is the most common variant of ectopic breast tissue (EBT). EBTcan undergo the same physiological and pathological processes as the normal breast. The incidence of fibroadenoma developing in ectopic breast is a rare entity, most common being the carcinoma. We report here a case of fibroadenoma of EBT in both axillae of a 33-year-old Asian woman. This case has been reported for its rarity and to reemphasize the importance of screening of EBT for any pathology during routine screening of breast.

Invasive Ductal Carcinoma Arising from Ectopic Breast Tissue in Axilla: A Case Report

Primary carcinoma of ectopic breast tissue is rare. We present a 57-year-old female patient with a large erythematous bulging mass in the right axilla. Imaging studies did not reveal any other lesions except for the one detected in the right axilla. Wide excision with axillary lymph node dissection was performed. The pathology report revealed a poorly differentiated carcinoma with no surrounding lymphoid tissue or lymphovascular infiltration or noncancerous breast tissue. We think that in our case the tumor was probably derived from a primary carcinoma of ectopic breast tissue rather than from a metastatic tumor or occult breast cancer. One year later, the patient presented with a local recurrence at the ipsilateral breast. Mastectomy with chemotherapy was performed. After three cycles of chemotherapy, imaging studies revealed distant metastases. This case report and literature review describe the characteristics of ectopic breast cancer in the axilla and reflects on which initial management strategy is appropriate.

A 32 year old female patient with a soft boggy mass in the left axilla was referred from the surgery clinic for fine needle aspiration with a provisional diagnosis of fat hypertrophy. Physical examination revealed a well defined mobile nodule within the mass. Cytological examination of the aspirated material and histopathological examination was consistent with fibroadenoma.
