Primary ectopic breast carcinoma: a case report

BackgroundEctopic breast tissue is present in 2–6% of women. Ectopic mammary tissue can experience physiological changes and the same pathological processes as the eutopic breast. Ectopic breast cancer represents an uncommon condition accounting for 0.3% of all breast neoplasms, and it is most frequently located in the axilla.Case reportWe report a rare case of a 57-year-old Tunisian woman who presented with a left-sided axillary mass evolving for about 1 month. The axillary ectopic breast tissue containing the mass was excised with axillary dissection. Pathology revealed a medullary multifocal carcinoma and metastasis was detected in two lymph nodes. She had local radiotherapy after six cycles of chemotherapy. She received herceptin therapy and hormonotherapy. After a 2-year follow-up, no evidence of local recurrence or distant metastases have been identified.ConclusionEctopic breast carcinoma is a rare entity that should be the first diagnosis to be considered if an axillary lump is present in ectopic breast tissue. No particular guidelines on diagnosis and treatment are available. Therefore, physicians should be aware of this condition to avoid treatment delays. Once diagnosed, careful patient follow-up is essential because of the ambiguous natural history of this rare entity.

Axillary ectopic breast tissue in the adolescent.

Ectopic breast tissue (EBT) includes a spectrum of disease that entails other entities based on the presence of glandular tissue, nipple, or areola. The diagnosis in adolescents is infrequent. A retrospective study was performed including girls with axillary EBT (class IV or V of Kajava's Classification) operated in 2006-2020. Imagining studies, clinical and surgical reports, and histopathology were reviewed. Eleven girls from 13 to 16years old were included. Two patients (18.2%) presented bilateral EBT. The most frequent clinical manifestation was 2-5cm mass (100%), associating cyclic pain with menstruation (45%) and fluctuating volume (36%). Bilateral axillary ultrasonography allowed preoperative diagnosis. All of them were treated by open excision, through small incisions located in an axillary y fold. Clinical and aesthetic results were self-assessed as "very good", with normalization of the axillary y hollow and imperceptible scars. No recurrences were observed after one year of follow-up. An immediate postoperative hematoma was reported, which did not require drainage. Histopathology showed mature breast tissue without atypia. Axillary accessory breasts must be included in differential diagnosis of pediatric axillary masses. Bilateral ultrasonography is recommended for the preoperative diagnosis. Excision through minimal incision at this age seems to be safe and effective.

Axillary Ectopic Breast Tissue Primary Cancer: A Rare Presentation of a Common Disease

Background: Carcinoma of ectopic breast tissue represents a rare condition. Ectopic glandular tissue is frequently located in the axilla, so ectopic breast lesions must be distinguished from other subcutaneous masses arising in this location. Case presentation: We describe the case of e 75 y/o woman presented to our department for the recent manifestation of an axillary cutaneous lesion. She underwent mammogram, breast ultrasound, fine-needle aspiration citology, breast MRI, thoraco-abdominal CT-scan and punch biopsy, and she was subsequently treated as a CUP-syndrome case. The final pathologic report showed the evidence of an ectopic breast tissue cancer. Conclusion: Despite the rarity of this condition, physicians should always keep in mind the possibility of ectopic BC in order to make an early diagnosis and adequately treat these patients.

Experience of Ultrasound-Guided Vacuum-Assisted Excision of a Phyllodes Tumor Arising From Ectopic Axillary Breast Tissue: A Case Report

: An axillary breast is a common condition, which can cause various diseases arising from the breast tissue. Among these diseases, phyllodes tumors are very rare fibroepithelial tumors, which resemble fibroadenomas. Surgical removal is the treatment of choice for phyllodes tumors to prevent recurrence. Inpatient treatment and general anesthesia are required for surgical removal, and fibrosis, skin scarring, and neurological symptoms may occur after surgery. Ultrasound-guided vacuum-assisted excision, because of its advantages, is an alternative to surgical excision for clinically benign breast masses. Therefore, in cases of clinically benign or concordant benign lesions, following a core needle biopsy, ultrasound-guided vacuum-assisted excision can be considered with sufficient preoperative measures and close follow-up of the ectopic axillary breast.

Gynaecomastia-like hyperplasia of axillary ectopic breast tissue – a case report

Aim: To highlight the incidental finding of gynaecomastia-like hyperplasia of axillary ectopic breast tissue in a female patient, with review of the literature. Case report: A 36 year old multiparous female presented for surgical management of right axillary ectopic breast tissue on a background history of a previously excised right lower quadrant breast lesion one year prior that showed a 29mm grade 3 invasive breast carcinoma of no special type with triple negative immunophenotype. The sentinel nodes were uninvolved and excision margins were clear. She underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy and local radiotherapy. There was no radiological or clinical evidence of recurrence at the one year mark. Excised axillary fibroadipose tissue histologically showed benign breast ducts without lobules demonstrating occasional micropapillary hyperplasia, as well as stromal pseudoangiomatous stromal hyperplasia (PASH). There was no evidence of in-situ or invasive malignancy. The overall appearance was that of gynaecomastia-like hyperplasia. Discussion: Gynaecomastia-like hyperplasia is a rare finding in breast specimens in female patients. It is exceedingly rare in ectopic breast tissue, with only a single case report in the literature to date. The spectrum of histologic changes are characteristic, although the pathogenesis is poorly understood due to the rare nature of this process.

Ectopic breast tissue carcinoma - a case report

Background: Ectopic breast cancer is a rare entity and an important diagnostic and treatment challenge. Case Presentation: 46-year-old female with previous history of resection of ectopic axillary breast tissue who was referred to our Institution after a second resection following an increase in left axillary volume. Histology reported a ductal ectopic breast tissue carcinoma that invaded the deep layer of the dermis and was positive for estrogen and progesterone receptors and Human Epidermal growth factor Receptor-type 2. After being referred to our Institution, surgical margin re-excision and sentinel node biopsy were performed. The patient initiated hormone therapy and underwent adjuvant radiotherapy to the breast and axilla (50 Gy/25 fractions, in daily 2 Gy fractions with a 3D conformal radiation therapy technique) and boost with bolus to the axilla (to complete 60 Gy). She remains in follow-up, with no recurrence to date. Conclusion: A high index of suspicion is required for the timely diagnosis of this rare condition. Since there are no specific guidelines, treatment remains a challenge.

Introduction: Ectopic Breast Tissue (EBT) is still a condition seen as sporadic (2-5%), and it is often delayed and ignored due to lack of awareness, whereas it may be exposed to malignant diseases. it must be always kept in mind for differential diagnosis of an EBT. We think that this case report is important because EBT associated with fi bro-adenoma is a quiet rare condition.

Malignant Phyllodes Tumor in Ectopic Breast Tissue: A Case Report with a Literature Review

Supernumerary breasts come from ectopic breast tissue which regression was incomplete. Typically, it is a single supernumerary gland, located in the axilla. Ectopic breast tissue is subject to the same pathologic events that occur in normally positioned breasts. Excision may be required for diagnosis, treatment of symptoms or cosmesis. We report a case report of a female patient aged 22 years, without medical history. She consulted for a left axillary swelling. Breast ultrasound showed: Voluminous mass of axillary tail with polylobed contours, Aspect evoking a phyllodes tumor. The patient had a wide excision. Anapath review concluded: Malignant phyllodes tumor in ectopic breast tissue and absence of residual tumor. Abdominal ultrasound and chest x-ray were normal. Adjuvant systemic treatment and radiotherapy were not delivered. Our patient is regularly followed: She doesn’t develop distant metastases or loco-regional relapse. Axillary ectopic breast tissue may provide a diagnostic challenge, as other benign and malignant lesions occur in this area. Malignant Phyllodes tumor in ectopic breast tissue is an extremely rare occurrence. Wide breast surgery is the mainstay of the treatment of non-metastatic malignant phyllodes tumors of the breast.

Bilateral Ectopic Axillary Breast Tissue in an Adult Female

Accessory breast tissue is rare, affecting about 2-6% of the general population and it is usually bilateral. It is a benign lesion that indicates incomplete involution of the milk line during embryogenesis. Most of the defects appear where the embryonic milk-line was located, but cases have been reported of ectopic breast tissue in other parts of the body, including the face, scapula, limbs or buttocks. The first classification of congenital breast anomalies was published by Kajava in 1915, who ordered them in classes from I to VIII. Although this classification was later simplified, the original continues to be that most used. The case is described here of a 42-year-old woman who presented with bilateral axillary lumps which had recently increased in size. Ultrasonography (US) and mammogram suggested ectopic breast tissue and the masses were surgically removed. Histopathological examination of the specimen confirmed the initial diagnosis of ectopic breast tissue. Because of the benign nature of the lesion, no further treatment was needed, but 3 and 6-month and annual follow-up was suggested.

Ectopic breast tissue (EBT) is a well-described entity in the English literature. However, fibroadenoma of the ectopic breast is a rare entity. We present a case of a 13-year-old adolescent girl with a subcutaneous mass in the right axilla that was pathologically identical to fibroadenoma seen in the EBT. To our knowledge, this is the second youngest patient reported with axillary EBT, which should be considered as a part of the differential diagnosis for axillary masses. A Nonpalpable Nodule in Ectopic Axillary Breast Tissue: Consider Phyllodes Tumor

Benign and malignant pathology can develop in ectopic axillary breast tissue, such as fibroadenomas, phyllodes tumors, and breast cancer. We present a rare case of an asymptomatic 43-year-old woman with an axillary nodule which was identified during screening mammography within ectopic axillary breast tissue, initially considered as a suspicious lymph node. Radiologic studies were considered as Breast Imaging-Reporting Data System (BI-RADS) 4. A hyperdense, lobular, and well-circumscribed nodule was identified in mammogram while the nodule by ultrasound (US) was hypoechoic with indistinct microlobular margins, without vascularity by Doppler, and measuring 1.26 × 1 cm. Core-needle biopsy reported a fibroepithelial neoplasm. The patient was submitted to local wide-needle excision located in intraoperative radiography of the surgical specimen and margin evaluation. Final histopathological study reported a 1.8 × 1.2 cm benign phyllodes tumor, with irregular, pushing, and clear wide margins within normal ectopic breast tissue. The patient without surgical complications continued annual screening without recurrence during a follow-up that took place 24 months later.

Ectopic breast tissue or super numerary mammary gland is a congenital condition characterized by the development of mammary tissue along the embryonic milk line. This condition Occurs in 0.4-6% of the general population. The most common site of development of super numerary mammary gland is the axillar region. Axillary ectopic breast tissue may provide a diagnostic challenge, as other benign and malignant lesions occur in this area. We report a case of 18 years-old girl presenting an axillary masse considered firstly as an ectopic mammary gland. Ultrasound aspect and axillary MRI correct the diagnosis and lead to provide specific management of this tumor.
