Social cognition and bulimic symptoms in male undergraduate students: The conditional effect of emotion dysregulation

AbstractObjectiveResearch demonstrates associations between poor social cognition and eating disorder (ED) pathology. Moreover, research shows that individuals with EDs struggle with emotion regulation. The present study replicates and extends the literature on social cognition and ED pathology, which previously focused largely on symptoms of anorexia nervosa among women while the present study focuses on symptoms of bulimia nervosa among undergraduate men. Further, this study tests the hypothesis that better emotion regulation mitigates the association between social cognition and ED pathology.MethodsAt a single timepoint, undergraduate males (n = 520) completed a series of questionnaires, and a task assessing mentalising, a key element of social cognition.ResultsConsistent with hypotheses, bulimic symptoms were associated with worse mentalising and worse self‐reported emotion regulation. Moreover, the association between mentalising and bulimic symptomatology was conditional on emotion regulation, such that it was strongest among those with more difficulties regulating their emotions.ConclusionResults are consistent with existing theories that highlight an interplay between interpersonal (e.g., mentalisation) and intrapersonal (e.g., affective functioning) factors in relation to ED symptomatology. Among undergraduate males, bulimic symptoms were associated with worse mentalisation. However, a good ability to regulate emotions interrupted this association.

Psychometric properties of a Mandarin Chinese version of the Body Appreciation Scale-2 among Chinese adolescents

In the present study, we explored the factor structure and psychometric properties of the Mandarin Chinese BAS-2 among adolescents residing in the Chinese mainland. Exploratory factor analysis in Study 1 (N = 790; 396 girls, 394 boys) supported the unidimensionality of the Mandarin Chinese BAS-2 among Chinese adolescents. Internal consistency reliability was upheld via McDonald’s omega. Convergent validity was supported by its moderate-to-strong relationships with body satisfaction, functionality satisfaction, self-esteem, life satisfaction, positive affect, and negative affect, while its small-to-moderate correlation with social desirability provided somewhat weaker discriminant validity support. Criterion-related validity was upheld by its inverse correlation with eating disorder symptomatology and positive correlation with intuitive eating. It explained unique variance in self-esteem (for girls and boys), eating disorder symptomatology (for girls), and intuitive eating (for boys) beyond age, body satisfaction, and functionality satisfaction, providing incremental validity evidence. A subsample of 134 girls and 114 boys completed the Mandarin Chinese BAS-2 again after three months, and test-retest reliability was upheld. The confirmatory factor analysis in Study 2 (N = 337; 192 girls, 145 boys) replicated the unidimensional structure and supported measurement invariance across gender. Collectively, the present study supported the unidimensionality, reliability, and validity of the Mandarin Chinese BAS-2′s scores among Chinese adolescents.

Incidence and prevalence of eating disorders among U.S. military service members, 2016-2021.

Despite unique experiences that may increase eating disorder risk, U.S. military service members are an understudied population. The current study examined incidence and prevalence of eating disorder diagnoses in U.S. military personnel. This retrospective cohort study utilized Military Health System Data Repository (MDR) data on eating disorder diagnoses (2016-2021). Active duty, Reserve, and National Guard U.S. military service members who received care via TRICARE Prime insurance were identified by ICD-10 eating disorder diagnostic codes. During the 6-year surveillance period, 5189 Service members received incident eating disorders diagnoses, with a crude overall incidence rate of 6.2 cases per 10,000 person-years. The most common diagnosis was other/unspecified specified eating disorders, followed by binge-eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, and anorexia nervosa. There was an 18.5% overall rise in total incident cases across the surveillance period, but this trend was not statistically significant (p = 0.09). Point prevalence significantly increased across the 6-year timeframe for total eating disorders (p < 0.001). Period prevalence for 6-year surveillance period was 0.244% for total eating disorders, 0.149% for other/unspecified eating disorder, 0.043% for bulimia nervosa, 0.038% for binge-eating disorder, and 0.013% for anorexia nervosa. Overall crude incidence estimates for total eating disorders were higher than reported in prior research that included only active duty Service members and required an eating disorder diagnosis code in the first or second diagnostic position of the medical record. Comprehensive and confidential studies are needed to more thoroughly characterize the nature and scope of eating disorder symptomatology within U.S. military personnel. U.S. military service members are a vulnerable population with regard to eating disorder symptoms. Previously reported incidence and prevalence estimates using data from the Military Health System may have been underestimated due to overly stringent case definitions. Given personal and occupational barriers (e.g., career consequences), confidential studies of military personnel may provide more complete data on the scope of eating disorders to inform screening and clinical practice guidelines for military populations.

Impulsivity and reward and punishment sensitivity among patients admitted to a specialized inpatient eating disorder treatment program.

Eating disorders (EDs) are conceptualized as disorders of under- and over-control, with impulsivity reflecting under-control. Extant research indicates that impulsivity and related factors such as reward sensitivity and punishment sensitivity may serve as trait-level transdiagnostic risk and/or maintenance factors in EDs. Findings on impulsivity and reward and punishment sensitivity by diagnosis are mixed and research on the relationship between these factors and ED symptoms, hospital course, and treatment outcomes is limited. Participants (N = 228) were patients admitted to a specialized inpatient behavioral treatment program for EDs who agreed to participate in a longitudinal study and completed self-report measures of impulsivity, reward sensitivity, and punishment sensitivity at admission. Weight and ED symptomatology were measured at admission and discharge. Hospital course variables included length of stay and premature treatment dropout. Impulsivity was lower in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) restricting type compared to those with AN binge/purge type or bulimia nervosa; no other group differences were observed. Higher impulsivity was associated with greater bulimic symptoms on the Eating Disorder Inventory 2 (EDI-2) at admission. Impulsivity was not related to ED symptoms, weight outcomes, length of hospital stay, or treatment dropout at program discharge. Impulsivity may help distinguish restrictive versus binge/purge EDs, but does not necessarily relate to discharge outcomes in an intensive inpatient ED program. Findings from this study provide novel contributions to the literature on personality traits in EDs and have important clinical implications. Results suggest that patients with higher levels of impulsivity or reward and punishment sensitivity can be expected to respond to inpatient treatment. Suggestions for future research are discussed.

Eating Disorder Treatment Access in the United States: Perceived Inequities Among Treatment Seekers.

Although eating disorders are associated with high rates of psychological and physical impairments and mortality, only about 20% of individuals with eating disorders receive treatment. No study has comprehensively assessed treatment access for those with these disorders in the United States. The authors examined access to eating disorder treatments and how it might vary among some populations. Seekers of treatment for eating disorders (N=1,995) completed an online assessment of clinical demographic and anthropometric characteristics, barriers to eating disorder treatment access, and eating disorder symptomatology. Analyses were conducted to identify treatment access barriers, compare barriers to treatment access across demographic groups, and investigate relationships between barriers to treatment access and eating disorder symptoms. Financial barriers (e.g., lack of insurance coverage) were the most frequently reported barrier to treatment access. Participants with historically underrepresented identities and with a diagnosis of other specified feeding or eating disorder (OSFED) reported more barriers related to financial challenges, geographic location, eating disorder identification, sociocultural factors, and treatment quality compared with those with historically represented identities (e.g., White and cisgender persons). Higher frequencies of reported barriers to treatment access were associated with more severe eating disorder symptoms and poorer illness trajectories. Financial barriers were the most significant impediment to accessing treatment among individuals seeking eating disorder treatment. Barriers to treatment access disproportionally affected underrepresented groups and those with an OSFED diagnosis.

Brain, behavior, cognition, and physical health in first-onset adolescent anorexia nervosa: The BRAVE Study design and cohort profile

Background Anorexia nervosa is a severe psychiatric disorder with a heterogeneous course with one of the highest rates of morbidity and mortality of all psychiatric disorders. Little is known about factors that predict both course and treatment outcomes of this disorder. The BRAVE Study is a longitudinal first-onset anorexia nervosa cohort study focusing on four topics of interest in girls only: (1) behavior, (2) neurobiology, (3) cognitive functions, and (4) physical health. Objective The goal of this paper is to introduce the BRAVE Study. The primary aim of the BRAVE Study is to identify predictors of treatment response in a large sample of 12-to-22-year-old females with first-onset typical or atypical anorexia nervosa. The second aim is to longitudinally investigate the association between clinically significant changes in eating disorder symptoms with the underlying behavioral, neurobiological, cognitive and physical health changes. The results of this study will allow us to develop more precise treatment strategies in order to provide more optimal treatment. Methods and analysis The BRAVE Study implements a longitudinal case-control design. Study recruitment was designed within a collaborative network of 16 Dutch mental health organizations, each with expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with anorexia nervosa. After obtaining informed consent, assessments were performed at baseline and one-year follow-up. Patients with anorexia nervosa received treatment as usual. The primary outcome measures at one year are restoration of weight and a reduction of eating disorder symptomatology. Predictive measures include neurobiological, cognitive, behavioral and physical health measures. Sample description In the BRAVE Study 79 girls with anorexia nervosa and 75 typically developing girls were included between May 2017 and October 2021. This period of time partially overlapped with the COVID-19 pandemic. 72% of the girls with anorexia nervosa and 88% of the typically developing girls also completed measurements at follow-up. The mean time between data collections points was 13 months. The groups were comparable in education level of their mothers, neurodevelopmental disorders, and ethnical background. The girls with anorexia nervosa were slightly younger than the typically developing girls. Conclusion The BRAVE Study aligns with one of the most important study priorities in the field of anorexia nervosa by examining (i) predictors of treatment response and (ii) investigating how symptoms with eating disorder symptoms track with changes in neurobiological, cognitive, behavorial and physical health functioning. Moreover, the study is innovative by its longitunal case control design, relatively large study sample and broad selection of measures.

Psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the functionality appreciation scale

BackgroundThe Functionality Appreciation Scale is a 7-item measure of an individual’s appreciation of his or her body for what it can do and is capable of doing. While this instrument has been increasingly used in intervention-based research, its psychometric properties have not been extensively studied in non-English-speaking populations. The psychometric properties of a novel Spanish translation of the FAS were examined.MethodsAn online sample of 838 Spanish adults (mean age = 31.79 ± 11.95 years, 50.48% men) completed the Spanish FAS and validated measures of body appreciation, eating disorder symptomatology, intuitive eating, and life satisfaction.ResultsExploratory factor analysis supported a 1-dimensional factor structure of the FAS, which was further supported by confirmatory factor analysis (SBχ²(14) = 83.82, SBχ²normed = 1.48, robust RMSEA = 0.094 (90% CI = 0.074, 0.115), SRMR = 0.040, robust CFI = 0.946, robust TLI = 0.924). Invariance across genders was shown, and there were no significant differences according to gender (t(417) = 0.77, p =.444, d = 0.07). Construct validity was also supported through significant associations with the other measures of the study. Incremental validity was established in women. Thus, appreciation of functionality predicted life satisfaction over and above the variance accounted for by other body image and eating disorder-related measures (F(4, 399) = 18.86, p <.001, ΔR2 = 0.03).ConclusionsThese results support the psychometric properties of the Spanish FAS and demonstrate the importance of the appreciation of functionality in relation to a healthier body image and psychological wellbeing.

Lose yourself: feared self, emotion regulation, and obsessive-compulsive and eating disorder symptomatology

ABSTRACT Objectives Feared self refers to an individual’s “possible” self that has undesired qualities or characteristics and has been linked to obsessive compulsive symptoms. However, feared self may also relate to eating disorder pathology, given the importance of views of self in the disorder. Method This questionnaire-based study in a non-clinical sample (N = 238) examined whether a feared self would independently predict the symptom severity of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and eating disorders (ED), while controlling for potential comorbidity of the respective symptoms. A secondary aim was to examine whether emotion regulation moderated the relationship between a feared self and OCD symptoms and a feared self and ED symptoms. Results Feared self was a significant unique predictor of symptoms of both disorders. Emotion regulation was not found to significantly moderate the relationship between feared self and either OCD or ED symptoms, although emotion regulation was a significant independent predictor of the respective symptoms. Conclusions The study is one of the first to show that a feared self uniquely predicts ED symptoms, over-and-above coexisting OCD symptoms. As such, the results provide support for feared self as a potential transdiagnostic factor. Implications and limitations are discussed.

One Sheet Does Not Fit All: The Dietetic Treatment Experiences of Individuals with High Eating Disorder Symptomatology Attending a Metabolic and Bariatric Clinic; an Exploratory Mixed-Methods Study

This study aimed to explore the dietetic treatment experiences of individuals with high eating disorder (ED) symptomatology attending a metabolic and bariatric clinic. An exploratory mixed methods cross-sectional study was conducted. Eighteen participants completed the survey, which included an adapted version of the Eating Disorders Treatment Experience Survey (EDTES), the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire Short (EDE-QS), and quantitative and qualitative questions relating to the roles and helpfulness of a dietitian in treatment. Data regarding the most and least helpful dietitians were collected. Differences between groups were tested with the Wilcoxon signed ranks test. A reflexive thematic analysis was used to analyse open-ended responses. The mean EDE-QS score reported by participants was 20.9 (SD = 6.0). The dietitians who were perceived as the most helpful were those who took into consideration an individual’s treatment preferences and choices (Z = −1.96, p = 0.05). Three themes were constructed: (1) nutrition knowledge and skills, (2) person-centred care, and (3) roles of the multidisciplinary team. Although further research is required, our findings suggest that the role of a dietitian in this setting may extend beyond weight-loss advice, and with additional training, could include individualised and collaborative supportive care that overlaps with ED treatment.

Development and initial validation of the Multifaceted Instrument for Body Image Disturbance (MI-BoD).

Specific facets of body image disturbance have an important role in eating disorder (ED) onset and maintenance yet have been assessed with single items and/or questionnaires predominantly developed in female samples to capture desire for a thinner body. The aim of this multipart study was to develop the multifaceted instrument for body image disturbance (MI-BoD) that will assess body image disturbance across gender and body size. In Study 1, interviews were conducted with 31 ED lived experience experts (45% females) to develop an initial item pool which was then rated for relevance and clarity by 59 international field experts, shortened and refined by the research team, and then rerated by 20 field experts and 91 ED lived experience experts. Of the 477 items developed from interviews, 46 were retained for the initial validation study. In Study 2, the MI-BoD was administered to undergraduate students (N = 937; 84% females), community adolescents (N = 208; 58% females), and individuals with self-reported ED diagnosis (N = 410; 77% females) to assess its preliminary psychometric properties. Exploratory factor analysis revealed six underlying factors, namely, Dissatisfaction, Overvaluation, Preoccupation, Fear of Weight Gain, Body Checking, and Body Exposure. No differential item functioning was detected for most MI-BoD items across gender, weight status, and ED status (symptomatic vs. asymptomatic). Overall, the MI-BoD showed good internal consistency, convergent and divergent validity, concurrent validity, and test-retest reliability. In conclusion, the MI-BoD is a promising tool for assessment of important facets of body image disturbance across gender, body size, and ED symptomatology. Associations between screen use while eating and eating disorder symptomatology: Exploring the roles of mindfulness and intuitive eating

Screen use while eating has been recently identified as a highly common and potentially important specific setting of screen use in relation to eating disorder symptomatology. However, given this area of research is still in its infancy, how screen use while eating may be related to eating disorder symptomatology remains largely unexplored. To fill this gap, the present study probed the potential roles of mindfulness and intuitive eating in the association between screen use while eating and eating disorder symptomatology. A large sample of Chinese adults (N = 800, aged 18–67 years old) recruited through a Chinese survey platform, Credamo, completed questionnaires assessing screen use while eating, eating disorder symptomatology, mindfulness, and intuitive eating. Structural equation modeling was used to test the proposed model. Results confirmed our hypotheses that the association between screen use while eating and eating disorder symptomatology was partially explained by mindfulness and intuitive eating, after adjusting for covariates (e.g., gender, age, body mass index, total screen time, and social media use). That said, higher screen use while eating was associated first with lower mindfulness and then with lower intuitive eating, which in turn were related to higher eating disorder symptomatology. The findings underline the importance of including eating-specific screen use for future research on eating disorder symptomatology and also have implications for an integrative intervention of mindfulness-based approaches and intuitive eating for mitigating the adverse effects of excessive screen use on eating behaviors.

Eating Disorder Symptomatology Among Young Adult Cigarette and E-Cigarette Users

Objective: Tobacco use is elevated among individuals with eating disorders (EDs). Yet, further research is needed to understand associations between cigarette and e-cigarette use patterns and ED symptomatology. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of tobacco use and EDs, this study characterized ED symptomatology and tobacco use patterns, including exclusive cigarette use, e-cigarette use, dual use, and nonuse. Method: Young adults aged 18-24 years who self-reported exclusive cigarette, e-cigarette, dual, or nonuse (N = 2500) were recruited via Lucid, an online survey management company. Participants completed questionnaires assessing body dissatisfaction, global ED psychopathology, binge eating and self-induced vomiting frequency, and demographics. ED diagnostic groups included: anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia spectrum eating disorders (BSED), atypical AN, and night eating syndrome (NES). Results: Multinomial logistic models revealed those with AN were more likely to be dual users, those with atypical AN were more likely to be exclusive e-cigarette users, and participants with a BSED or NES were more likely to be exclusive e-cigarette or dual users, compared to those without an ED. General linear models suggested body dissatisfaction and global ED psychopathology were higher among exclusive e-cigarette and dual users, while binge eating and self-induced vomiting frequencies were greater among all tobacco use groups compared to nonusers. Discussion: Our findings suggest young adults with ED symptomatology were more likely to be users of e-cigarettes exclusively or dual users. It will be necessary to examine how these associations manifest using longitudinal and clinical populations in future research.

Brief cognitive behavioural therapy for eating disorders symptomatology among a mixed sample of adolescents and young adults in primary care: A non-randomised feasibility and pilot study.

Brief and accessible therapies for people with an eating disorder is an important health target. Ten-session cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT-T) is a brief treatment evaluated in people with a non-underweight eating disorder. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of CBT-T for young people in primary care. This cohort pilot study used group (adolescents vs. young adults) by time (over four time points) Generalised Linear Mixed Model analysis. Participants included 13-25-year-olds attending an early intervention mental health service, receiving 10 sessions of CBT-T. Feasibility was assessed using recruitment, retention and satisfaction. Eating and other pathology measures were administered at baseline, weeks four and 10, and 12-week follow-up. Of the 63 commencing treatment, 38 completed 10 CBT-T sessions (60%). Most (94%) reported high treatment satisfaction. Significant reductions in eating pathology, depression and stress were found. Age group did not yield differences in CBT-T outcome, with large to very large effect sizes across outcome variables. Anxiety was associated with attrition. This study provides preliminary support for the use of CBT-T in primary care, across adolescence and early adulthood. Findings require replication in other clinical settings and comparison to other clinical approaches and control populations.

Getting into a good headspace: a study protocol of a pragmatic trial for an eating disorder prevention program in an Australian youth mental health service

Eating disorders (EDs) are serious, deadly disorders that emerge in adolescence and early adulthood. Further, reported incidences of EDs are increasing worldwide. As such, accessible, affordable, and effective early intervention and prevention efforts are critical. The Body Project is a well-established ED prevention program with demonstrated success at reducing ED symptom severity and the risk of onset of EDs in young females. However, it has not yet been formally evaluated in an Australian population, nor have the benefits of the treatment for young people of all genders been thoroughly investigated. This protocol paper outlines the design for a study which aims to investigate the outcomes and feasibility of the Body Project as a brief ED prevention program within an Australian youth mental health service: headspace Camperdown. This pragmatic trial will compare outcomes between a Body Project treatment group and a Treatment-as-usual control group. Primary outcomes include body image concerns, ED symptomatology and general psychological distress, measured pre- and post-treatment, and at one-month follow-up. All young people attending headspace Camperdown for care are eligible for participation in the trial. The Body Project program is comprised of four group-based 1.5 h sessions run over 4 consecutive weeks. Overall, a trial of the Body Project as an ED prevention program is warranted to investigate the outcomes of the intervention in this sample and will provide valuable information about the feasibility for widespread implementation of the treatment as part of a stepped-care approach to intervention for EDs at youth mental health service locations across Australia. Identity Functioning in Patients with an Eating Disorder: Developmental Trajectories throughout Treatment.

Increasing research has indicated a strong association between identity functioning and eating disorder (ED) symptomatology. However, a detailed investigation of identity throughout ED treatment is lacking. The present longitudinal study examined identity in inpatients with an ED and explored its simultaneous change with ED symptomatology throughout treatment. A total of 225 female patients completed questionnaires at admission. From these 225 patients participating at admission (Wave 1), 110 also participated in at least one additional measurement wave, with 43.64% (n = 48) participating at admission and during treatment, 16.36% (n = 18) participating at admission and at discharge, and 40% (n = 44) participating at admission, during treatment and at discharge. Questionnaires on identity synthesis, identity confusion, identity processes, and ED symptomatology were completed. Latent growth curve modeling was used to address the research questions. Throughout treatment, a decrease in identity confusion and an increase in identity synthesis and adaptive identity processes were found. Accordingly, increases in identity synthesis and identification with commitment were related to general decreases in the drive for thinness and body dissatisfaction. Similarly, such decreases in ED symptoms were related to general decreases in identity confusion and ruminative exploration. The present study points to an increase in identity functioning throughout treatment, and longitudinal associations between identity functioning and ED symptomatology were found. Helping patients to decrease their ruminative exploration and to increase their identification with previously made life commitments and treating body/weight concerns could both be helpful in ED treatment.

Eating disorders in narcolepsy type 1: Evidence from a cross-sectional Italian study.

Narcolepsy type 1 is a chronic central disorder of hypersomnolence, and it is frequently accompanied by overweight, but the association between narcolepsy type 1 and eating disorders is controversial. Our study aims to compare patients with narcolepsy type 1 and controls on the symptomatology of eating disorders and to evaluate the association between clinical factors. This is a cross-sectional study, with consecutive recruitment of patients with narcolepsy type 1 attending the Outpatient Clinic for Narcolepsy at the IRCCS Istituto delle Scienze Neurologiche di Bologna (Italy) for routine follow-up visits. Healthy subjects from general populations were recruited as controls. Patients underwent a questionnaire-based assessment using the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q), Binge Eating Scale (BES), Italian Night Eating Questionnaire (I-NEQ), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and Narcolepsy Severity Scale (NSS). One hundred and thirty-eight patients with narcolepsy type 1 and 162 controls were enrolled. This study showed that individuals with narcolepsy type 1 reported higher scores on the EDE-Q, I-NEQ, and a higher body mass index (BMI) than the controls. The logistic regression analysis results, with EDE-Q positivity as a dependent variable, demonstrate a significant association with antidepressant drugs, female sex, and the use of sodium oxybate. We found an association between antidepressant drug consumption, the NSS total score, and female sex with BES positivity as the dependent variable. The logistic regression analysis for I-NEQ positivity found an association with antidepressant drug use. This study shows that patients with narcolepsy type 1 frequently present with comorbid eating disorder symptomatology, mainly night eating syndrome. Investigating the possible presence of eating disorders symptomatology through questionnaires is fundamental during the assessment of patients with narcolepsy type 1.

Understanding and treating body image disturbances in eating disorders through body illusion interventions: a scoping review protocol

BackgroundWe plan a scoping review aimed to synthesize what is known about the use of sensory-driven body illusion (BI) interventions for understanding and treating body image disturbance (BID) in people diagnosed with clinical eating disorders (EDs) and people with subclinical ED symptomatology. Our study will provide an outline of the current literature, identify gaps within the literature, and suggest novel directions for future research.Methods/designThe scoping review process will be guided by the methodological framework of Arksey and O’Malley, subsequent recommendations by Levac et al., and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis Protocols Extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines. The following electronic databases will be systematically searched: MEDLINE (via PubMed), Web of Science, PsycINFO, and Scopus. Furthermore, to identify additional studies, we will use a search engine such as Google Scholar, and for grey literature, we will include Proquest for Dissertations and Theses. A search strategy has been identified and agreed upon by the research team in conjunction with a research librarian. Two researchers will screen the titles and abstracts independently and then assess the full text of the selected citations for the inclusion criteria. A third reviewer will be involved in cases of disagreement. Modeling college student intimate partner violence perpetration, eating disorder symptomatology, and alcohol salience

Intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration’s relationship with alcohol salience to college experience and eating disorder (ED) symptomatology is not well understood. Midwestern university students (n = 1580) participated in an online survey. Structural equation models examined the relationship between these variables. All models fit the data well, however, the risk factors of IPV perpetration or alcohol use were not significantly associated with ED symptomatology. However, IPV perpetration was significantly associated with both alcohol use (β = .13, p < .01) and alcohol salience (β = .11, p < .01). College students reported higher levels of perpetration and alcohol salience, which may indicate alcohol-fueled social interactions.

Probiotic and prebiotic interventions in eating disorders: Anarrative review.

The review aimed to summarise and discuss findings focused on therapeutic probiotic and prebiotic interventions in eating disorders (ED). Using PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science all published studies were retrieved until February 2023, following PRISMA guidelines. From the 111 initial studies, 5 met the inclusion criteria for this review. All studies included in this narrative review were focused on anorexia nervosa (AN). Three longitudinal, randomised, controlled trials aimed to evaluate interventions with probiotics (Lactobacillus reuteri, yoghurt with Lactobacillus, and Streptococcus) in children and adolescents. These studies primarily emphasised medical outcomes and anthropometric measures following the administration of probiotics. However, the findings yielded mixed results in terms of short-term weight gain or alterations in specific immunological parameters. With a lower level of evidence, supplementation with synbiotics (probiotic+prebiotic) has been associated with improvements in microbiota diversity and attenuation of inflammatory responses. Research on probiotics and prebiotics in ED is limited, primarily focussing on anorexia nervosa (AN). Their use in AN regarding medical and anthropometric outcomes needs further confirmation and future research should be warranted to assess their impact on psychological and ED symptomatology, where there is a notable gap in the existing literature.

Emotional dysregulation and eating symptoms in gender dysphoria and eating disorders: the mediating role of body uneasiness

Emotional dysregulation is a key transdiagnostic dimension of several clinical conditions, including eating disorders (EDs) and gender dysphoria (GD). Not only is there frequent comorbidity between EDs and GD, but GD individuals also commonly experience ED symptoms and body-image disturbances. However, more research is needed to understand how specific body-related experiences may differently interact with difficulties in emotion regulation and dysfunctional eating behaviors in EDs and GD. Thus, the present study aimed at exploring potential associations between emotional dysregulation and ED symptomatology in individuals diagnosed with anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), or gender dysphoria (GD), also considering the mediating role of specific dimensions of body uneasiness. A national sample of N = 96 help-seekers assigned female at birth (n = 32 with AN, n = 32 with BN, n = 32 with GD) was recruited from two specialized care centers. Participants completed the Eating Disorder Inventory-3 (EDI-3) and the Body Uneasiness Test (BUT), while the Shedler-Westen Assessment Procedure–200 (SWAP-200) was used to evaluate emotional dysregulation. Findings showed that several body uneasiness dimensions mediated the relationship between emotional dysregulation and ED symptoms, in both AN-BN and GD participants. In GD individuals, body avoidance emerged as a significant mediator of the relationship between emotional dysregulation and ED symptoms, whereas in both AN-BN patients and GD individuals, depersonalization toward the body emerged as a significant mediator. The results suggest that the interplay between emotional dysregulation, body uneasiness, and ED symptoms may be crucial for the development of comprehensive and tailored prevention strategies.
