Parametric Study of Structural Seismic Response: Correlation Between Lateral Load, Displacement, and Stiffness

Indonesia, located near the convergence of major tectonic plates, often experiences significant earthquakes that impact buildings. Many houses damaged by earthquakes are simple structures with red brick masonry. This study analyzes the seismic performance of masonry houses using ETABS software, assuming the houses are in seismic zone 4 and built on soft soil. The analysis focuses on the correlation between lateral loads, displacement, and structural stiffness. The results indicate that the maximum lateral load occurs in the X direction, while the maximum displacement occurs in the Y direction, indicating higher flexibility in the Y direction. Higher structural stiffness reduces displacement but also increases inertia forces. The nonlinear correlation between lateral loads and displacement, as well as the decrease in effective structural stiffness with increasing lateral loads, underscores the importance of balancing stiffness and flexibility in structural design. This study provides valuable insights for earthquake-resistant building design, particularly for masonry houses in earthquake-prone areas of Indonesia. The analysis emphasizes the importance of reinforcing critical areas and ensuring a more uniform distribution of lateral loads to enhance structural resilience to earthquakes. Retrofitting the Heart: Explaining the Enigmatic Septal Thickening in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most common genetic cardiac disease and is characterized by left ventricular hypertrophy. Although this hypertrophy often associates with sarcomeric gene mutations, nongenetic factors also contribute to the disease, leading to diastolic dysfunction. Notably, this dysfunction manifests before hypertrophy and is linked to hypercontractility, as well as nonuniform contraction and relaxation (myofibril asynchrony) of the myocardium. Although the distribution of hypertrophy in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy can vary both between and within individuals, in most cases, it is primarily confined to the interventricular septum. The reasons for septal thickening remain largely unknown. In this article, we propose that alterations in muscle fiber geometry, present from birth, dictate the septal shape. When combined with hypercontractility and exacerbated by left ventricular outflow tract obstruction, these factors predispose the septum to an isometric type of contraction during systole, consequently constraining its mobility. This contraction, or more accurately, this focal increase in biomechanical stress, prompts the septum to adapt and undergo remodeling. Drawing a parallel, this is reminiscent of how earthquake-resistant buildings are retrofitted with vibration dampers to absorb the majority of the shock motion and load. Similarly, the heart adapts by synthesizing viscoelastic elements such as microtubules, titin, desmin, collagen, and intercalated disc components. This pronounced remodeling in the cytoskeletal structure leads to noticeable septal hypertrophy. This structural adaptation acts as a protective measure against damage by attenuating myofibril shortening while reducing cavity tension according to Laplace Law. By examining these events, we provide a coherent explanation for the septum's predisposition toward hypertrophy.

Analysis of Base Shear and Story Drift in the Low-Rise RC Sructure

<p class="Abstract">Earthquakes frequently occur in Indonesia because it is an earthquake-prone area. Due to lateral load from an earthquake can cause a weakly constructed building to collapse. Designers often only consider tall buildings in designing earthquake-resistant building structures but ignore earthquake-resistant designing for low-rise buildings. This study focuses on the analysis of earthquake resistant structures with a case study of low-rise buildings in the form of a 3-story reinforced concrete (RC) building in the South Jakarta area. The objective of the study is to analyze the base shear and story drift of the structure due to lateral or earthquake loads. The structure is a reinforced concrete with the concrete compressive strength of <em> </em>= 30 MPa and longitudinal reinforcement of = 420 MPa and stirrups of = 280 MPa. This study uses equivalent static analysis manually and using ETABS 20.1.0 application. The results showed that three story buildings analyzed using equivalent static analysis method and using ETABS 20.1.0 application had almost the same results on horizontal forces with manual result of 1680.97 kN and ETABS of 1648.46 kN. The elastic story deflection and inelastic story drift in this study are still within safe limits because it is below the drift limit.</p>

Design of Earthquake-Resistant Buildings. New Generation Standards

In modern practice of designing buildings in seismic areas, there is a constant increase in the level of detail of models, however, calculations often ignore the fact that seismic impact is a random process with large variability of parameters, and the interaction of the structure with a nonlinearly deformable foundation is not always taken into account correctly. In addition, when calculating seismic impacts, it is necessary to use modern material models that take into account the nonlinear nature of deformation under cyclic loads. All the factors described above indicate the need to develop complex methods for calculating seismic impacts. The article describes an integrated approach to the calculations of buildings and structures being built in seismic areas, and also provides the main theses for the STO “Construction in seismic areas. Basic provisions”. The section “materials used and research methods” presents the key components of the proposed methodology (nonlinear calculation method, material models and foundation model). The section “research results” presents the main provisions of the proposed two-level calculation. In conclusion, it was concluded that it is necessary to update modern standards and methods of calculation for seismic impacts.

Application Levels Of Urban Transformation Methods In Zoning Planning Studies

Urban transformation strategies should be included in zoning plan revisions in order to take precautions against disasters caused by natural events such as earthquake-resistant building stock, floods and landslides, and to meet sustainable urban requirements. Carrying out these studies by public institutions, which are in the position of preparing and implementing the law, will ensure that the correct zoning plans are prepared and will also result in the cities reaching the necessary transformation targets. In this study, it is aimed to select the appropriate urban regeneration methods that will enable the solutions of the problems of the cities and the necessary revisions to be made and to determine the level of reflectivity of urban regeneration studies to the zoning plans in terms of their current applications. In this context, questions were asked to public personnel who urban transformation law implementers and researchers through expert opinion form are. The answers received from the experts were analysed according to the frequency and percentage values given in tables and the answers to the questions about the degree of importance were analysed according to the 5-point Likert scale and the degree of importance was determined.

Multi-model seismic susceptibility assessment of the 1950 great Assam earthquake in the Eastern Himalayan front

The seismic susceptibility and mitigation management is paramount concern in tectonically active area like Northeastern India. This area has been devastated innumerably during the 1950 Assam great earthquake. The present study area falls in the foreland basin (Brahmaputra Valley) of Eastern Himalaya. This region is seismically vulnerable due to the tectonic complexity caused by the convergence of the Eurasian, Indian, and Burmese plates. In such, an area optimal disaster management and preparedness is necessary to define the non-linear character of seismic susceptibility, where population and unscientific urbanization have increased manifold. Therefore, for the present study, various multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methods such as analytical hierarchy process (AHP), fuzzy-AHP (FAHP), and maximum entropy technique (MaxEnt) have been used for determining the seismic susceptibility, by assigning weightage to nine controlling factors such as: predominant frequency (f0), geology (G), vulnerability index (K), peak amplification (A0), liquefaction potential (LP), groundwater condition (WT), shear wave velocity (Vs30), peak ground acceleration (PGA), and land use/land cover (LU). The MaxEnt model exhibits the highest accuracy (87.5%) when the performance of the models was compared using the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) and area under the curve (AUC) value. Further, overlay analysis of best seismic susceptibility model using MaxEnt and PGV-based Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) intensity shows that 40% the study area is in the very high and high seismic risk zone. In tectonically active areas, this kind of integration work is essential to improves the mitigation strategy and aids urban planners in designing earthquake-resistant buildings.

Geotechnical and Structural Damages Caused by the 2023 Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes in Gölbaşı (Adıyaman)

On 6 February 2023, two independent earthquake pairs on the East Anatolian Fault Zone, with epicenters in Pazarcık (Mw = 7.7) and Elbistan (Mw = 7.6) districts of Kahramanmaraş province, caused great destruction. Adıyaman and Gölbaşı districts of this city are among the settlements most affected by the earthquake. Especially in the district where geotechnical damages are most observed, the destructive effects of earthquakes have been clearly observed in buildings with different structural systems. In this study, information is given about the earthquakes that hit the region and the fault zone where the earthquakes occur. Geotechnical and structural damages occurring in the villages and center of the district were evaluated within the scope of earthquakes and structural engineering. It can be stated that damages observed in the district center are generally caused by soil–structure interaction problems. The fact that masonry structures, which are widely used in rural areas, do not benefit from any engineering services has an impact on the level of damage. The main reason for the damages occurring in the reinforced concrete structures in the district is the reinforced concrete system that is not designed properly or not built in accordance with the design. This case study demonstrated the importance of earthquake–soil–structure interactions in line with earthquake-resistant building design principles.

The position of our country is included in the area Ring of Fire, where 90% of earthquakes on earth will occur in this region. Earthquakes in West Sumatra (2009), Mentawai (2010), Lombok and Palu (2018) have claimed more than 10,339 lives and more than 100,000 heavy damage to buildings. Building walls are generally made of brick or adobe, but these two materials have several disadvantages including weight and brittle. As a result of its considerable weight, it will increase the dead load of the structure so that the earthquake load will also increase. Thus, lightweight and clay materials (ductile) will be better if used as earthquake-resistant building walls and the level of risk is lower. Prefabricated sandwich panels produced by PT. BUILDING TECHNOLOGIES INDONESIA within BUKAKA TEKNIK UTAMA Tbk Group. to be a series of cyclic load tested full scale wall constructions. The conventional panel circuit model obtained the behavior of each swaying wall segment as an independent individual panel. Cyclic test results up to drift 12 were obtained with a maximum load of 4.245 kN with a maximum displacement of 106.28 mm compressive direction and a maximum load of 1.425 kN with a maximum displacement of 75.68 mm pulling direction. Deviation behavior is obtained that continues to increase as horizontal loads increase, but not until structural damage occurs in the series of 3 sandwich walls. This condition is a positive thing in the development of buildings with light materials to reduce the magnitude of the earthquake force and minimize damage and casualties.

Comparison of peak ground acceleration using deterministic and probabilistic approach in the coastal area of Loh Buaya, Rinca Island, Indonesia

An area located near an active volcano, subduction zone, and/or active fault has a risk of an earthquake. Earthquakes can cause damage to buildings with a large number of losses. One of the earthquake-related parameters required in planning an earthquake-resistant building is the Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA). The objective of this study is to compare the PGA value at the coastal area of Loh Buaya, Rinca Island, Indonesia, using Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis (PSHA) and Deterministic Seismic Hazard Analysis (DSHA). The DSHA is calculated based on earthquake data series from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in the period between 1922 to 2022. Also, it is calculated using 10 data of Ground Motion Prediction Equation (GMPE). Data from the USGS is constrained with magnitude > 5.0 MW and earthquake distance < 200 km from the study site. The PSHA is based on the Indonesian earthquake hazard map and the de-aggregation map from the National Earthquake Study Centre of Indonesia with a probability exceeding 2% in 50 years. Based on the parameters of PGA maximum, distance, and magnitude, the DSHA by Kanno method has the closest result to the PSHA. It is concluded that this area has a high earthquake risk with a PGA maximum of more than 0.5 g.

Pole Allocation Applied to Two Buildings Connected by Joint Damper

For two adjacent buildings connected by a joint damper, an inverse problem is formulated based on the pole allocation method in control theory. The structural system is simplified as a two-degrees-of-freedom (2-DOF) lumped-mass damped shear model. The unified governing equation, which expresses the relationship between an assigned control target and the structural parameters for an earthquake-resistant building, seismically isolated building, or passively controlled building, is extended to structural control using a joint damper. The introduced equation automatically constrains the variations in the structural parameters under the assigned modal properties. The integration of the pole allocation method and fixed-point theory directly estimates the additional damping effect on the target buildings from the optimum capacity of the joint damper, which improves the trial-and-error steps at the preliminary design stage. The past fixed-point theories do not provide the additional damping effect but the optimum damping coefficient of the joint damper. The present study directly links the additional damping with the damping of the joint damper. Numerical examples are used to verify the theoretical integration using a 20-DOF building model wherein two 10-DOF models are connected by a joint damper between the top lumped masses.

Modern concrete composites for earthquake-resistant construction

Objective. The purpose of the research is to develop earthquake-resistant building composites Method. The study is based on experimental dynamic testing of fine-grained concrete. Existing approaches to ensuring seismic safety of buildings and structures are analytically summarized. Result. Domestic and foreign experience in designing fine-grained concrete compositions for earthquake-resistant construction is presented. Compositions of fine-grained concrete of various classes were obtained using raw materials of natural and man-made origin. Recipes were proposed and their construction, technical and dynamic properties were studied. Conclusion. The strength of fine-grained concrete increases with decreasing loading time, and at a loading time of approximately 0.01 sec or a loading rate of about 5000-7000 MPa sec, this excess is about 30% compared to the statistical strength of concrete. This allows us to recommend fine-grained concrete for structures experiencing dynamic impact.

Colomadu is the name of a district in Karanganyar Regency, Central Java. Colomadu's economic growth can grow through the goods and services business, tourism, and industry so that an office building is planned in the Colomadu area. Because the location of Colomadu District is not far from the province of Yogyakarta, where earthquakes often occur, an earthquake-resistant building is needed to anticipate a minimum number of casualties and material losses during an earthquake. Therefore, in planning this office, a special moment resisting frame system (SRPMK) is used. The building with the Special Moment Bearing Frame System (SRPMK) is planned with the concept of Strong Column and Weak Beam (strong column and weak beam). This planning aims to plan a building structure that is resistant to earthquake loads that will be received by the structure using a special moment-bearing frame structure system and refers to the applicable requirements in accordance with SNI 2847: 2019. Earthquake loads are reviewed using the spectrum response method and structural analysis is carried out with the help of the ETABS V9.7.4 program. From the planning results, the dimensions of the bondek floor plate thickness of 140 mm, beams B1A 150x400 mm, B2A 200x400 mm, B2B 200x400 mm, B2C 200x400 mm, B2D 200x400 mm, B2E 200x400 mm, B3A 200x500 mm, B3B 200x500 mm, B4A 300x150 mm, B5A 300x150 mm, BS 150x300 mm, and columns KP 150x150 mm, K1A 200x300 mm, K2A 400x550 mm, K3A 450x650 mm, and K4A 350x500 mm.

The February 6, 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes exposed the vulnerabilities of existing RC structures, causing thousands of buildings to collapse or sustain severe damage, especially in the hardest-hit provinces. Cross-laminated timber (CLT), one of the industrial wood materials, is used as an alternative to RC in buildings in earthquake zones around the world due to its lightness and many positive features. The aim of the study is to examine the dynamic behavior of multi-storey residential buildings built with the CLT shear wall system, with limited application in Turkey, under earthquake loads and to draw attention to the material selection and sizing to be used in the structural elements of earthquake-resistant buildings. Using TimberTech (2022) software, a five-story building with CLT walls was analyzed under linear dynamic conditions. The study shows while the model provides all the verifications in the solution according to Eurocode for soil type C, it is inadequate under the seismic data of the Kahramanmaraş earthquake.

Analysis of the Structure of the Existing Mess Korem 012 Building as an Alternative Safety Building in Meulaboh

West Aceh district is one of the districts that was affected by the earthquake and tsunami that occurred in 2004. As a district that is in a strong earthquake condition, the aspect of earthquake-resistant buildings is an important object of concern. The Mess Ex KOREM 012 building is one of the buildings that was affected by the 2004 earthquake and tsunami tragedy, resulting in damage to structural elements. There are still very few alternative rescue buildings in Meulaboh, so the former Korem 012 Mess Building is an alternative that can be used to build this building. So this study aims to determine the structural capacity of the Mess Existing Korem 012 building which is intended as an alternative rescue building. This research method uses response spectrum analysis using the Structural Analysis Program (SAP2000) to obtain a structural response to the internal forces of the structure. These data were then processed again with SNI 2847-2019 in order to obtain data on the interaction of forces and moments of the P-MM column ratio and the joint ratio of beam-column relations (HBK). To produce data on the ability of structural elements in accordance with the Requirements for Special Moment-Bearing Frame Systems (SRPMK). The results of the analysis show that in the column area, there is a P-MM condition and the joint ratio HBK &gt; 1. This shows that the ratio of structural capabilities exceeds the capability of the structure, thus the structure of the Mess Ex Korem 012 Building must be repaired to meet the earthquakeresistant building requirements of the SRPMK so it deserves to be used as an alternative rescue building in Meulaboh.

Building practice of energy efficient earthquake-resistance buildings

The article discusses technologies for constructing energy-efficient, earthquake-resistant buildings that have increased rigidity and strength in their main components. These technologies utilize structures with enhanced damping and active seismic insulation systems. Practical implementations, design features, and technological aspects are examined. An analysis is conducted on the characteristics of current technologies, the conditions for production and installation, repairability, and their impact on the building's energy efficiency during operation. Technologies are systematized and categorized based on their principles of seismic protection during the analysis process. The analysis was conducted based on the following main criteria: steel consumption, suitability of repairable technologies used, possibility of implementing seismic protection during building reconstruction, ability to withstand seismic effects, feasibility of implementation, and energy efficiency. It has been determined that traditional technical solutions to increase rigidity and strength, such as introducing structures with increased damping used for buildings with precast, monolithic, and precast-monolithic frames, require a significant amount of additional resources. These solutions are characterized by accumulation of failures in individual hidden elements due to seismic loads, low maintainability, and often decrease the energy efficiency of the building. The use of seismic energy-absorbing mechanisms with high efficiency can significantly reduce resource costs for construction and increase maintainability, thus improving the overall sustainability of the structure. Based on the findings of the analysis, the following recommendations are made for conducting further studies on active protection systems in terms of design, development of construction technology, and potential application in the renovation of existing buildings.

Re-Analysis of the Prototype Structure of Earthquake-Resistant Flats Built in the Seismic Mitigation Area Central of Borneo

Indonesia is an earthquake-prone area; to reduce the risk of disasters, it is necessary to construct earthquake-resistant buildings. The concept of earthquake-resistant buildings attempts to make all structural elements into a unified whole that is not easily collapsed by an earthquake. In general, the planning of the structure of an apartment is made of a prototype whose structure is calculated to be earthquake-resistant. However, not all flats are built in earthquake-prone areas. One is in Central Borneo Province, which is not prone to earthquakes. The research aims to determine the comparison of the dimensions and reinforcement requirements on the prototype with Kriteria Desain Struktur (KDS) 'BC' Structural Design Criteria compared to structural planning in the Central Borneo Seismic Mitigation Area. Design standards refer to SNI 1727:2013, SNI 2847:2013, SNI 2847-2019, and SNI 1726-2019. The building being studied is the Type 36 Prototype Flat (5 floors) using concrete fc' 22.8 MPa and reinforcing steel my 420 MPa. Research on Columns and Beams' superstructure includes the design of the structural dimensions and reinforcement requirements. Structural dimensions and reinforcement area will be designed efficiently and declared safe by controlling the reinforcement ratio(p). Structural dimensional limitations. Comparative Seismic Analysis, Design, and Cost Estimation of a Residential Building

The updated National Building Code (NBC 105:2020) for professionally engineered buildings provides guidelines for analyzing and designing earthquake-resistant buildings. Though it has been three years since the update of the NBC, the Indian standard code, IS 1893:2016, still seems to be prevalent; however, it has not been updated after 2016. Therefore, comparing the seismic behavior of buildings analyzed and designed by these two prevailing methods in Nepal is essential. This study aims to compare the seismic parameters, design results, and the total cost of the buildings for NBC and IS for a three-story with a staircase-cover residential building. The response Spectrum Method was used to analyze and compare the response parameters like base shear, story drift, and story displacement. The seismic response parameters are more significant; however, the total cost is not significantly greater (i.e., only 5.5% approx.) for NBC, though the base shear was relatively higher than IS. Thus, this study helps understand the structural performance and emphasizes the use of NBC in all parts of Nepal.

Purpose: Analysis of accumulated experience in the design and construction of buildings in areas with permafrost and seismic activity. Methods: Statistical and analytical methods have been applied. Results: The areas of distribution of both permafrost soils and seismics on the territory of Russia are considered. The review and analysis of the principles of construction on permafrost soils is given. 2 main methods of preserving the foundation soils in a frozen state using principle I of construction and 3 combined options when pairing a pile foundation with a ventilated underground, filling and cooling devices are considered and analyzed. The conclusion is made about the construction using principle I, where a pile foundation with a high pile grillage and a ventilated underground is preferred as a foundation, since the piles of this foundation act as a flexible connection between the aboveground part of the building and the base. In case of seismic impact, this foundation perceives the action of vertical and horizontal seismic loads, as well as the action of the tipping moment. In the case when it is impossible to keep the foundation in a frozen state under buildings, it is necessary to use principle II, which is implemented due to the coefficient of safety and rigidity of building structures, as well as pre-construction measures aimed at thawing, pre-compaction or partial replacement of natural subsidence soils, increasing the depth of foundation laying or regulation of the thawing zone due to planning decisions or applications of devices for heat removal. It is revealed that spatial foundation platforms are effective earthquake-resistant structures of foundations on permafrost soils using principle II in conditions of seismic activity. The analysis of the design experience on permafrost soils in seismically active areas is carried out. Practical significance: It is proposed to use principle I of construction of earthquake-resistant buildings on permafrost soils (in cases where permafrost preservation is possible).
