Unfiltering of the EarthCARE Broadband Radiometer (BBR) observations: the BM-RAD product

Abstract. The methodology to determine the unfiltered solar and thermal radiances from the measured EarthCARE Broadband Radiometer (BBR) shortwave (SW) and total-wave (TW) filtered radiances is presented. Within the EarthCARE ground processing, the correction for the effect of the BBR spectral responses, the unfiltering, is performed by the so-called BM-RAD processor which produces the level-2 BM-RAD product. The BM-RAD product refers to unfiltered broadband radiances that are derived from the BBR and the Multi-Spectral Imager (MSI) instruments on board the forthcoming EarthCARE satellite. The method is based on theoretical regressions between filtered and unfiltered radiances, as is done for the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) and the Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB) instruments. The regressions are derived from a large geophysical database of spectral radiance curves simulated using radiative transfer models. Based on the radiative transfer computations, the unfiltering error, i.e., the error introduced by the small spectral variations of the BBR instrument response, is expected to remain well below 0.5 % in the shortwave (SW) and 0.1 % in the longwave (LW), at 1 standard deviation. These excellent performances are permitted by the very simple optics used in the BBR instrument: a telescope with a single paraboloid mirror. End-to-end verification of the unfiltering algorithm has been performed by running the BM-RAD processor on modelled level-1 BBR radiances obtained for three EarthCARE orbits simulated by an integrated forecasting and data assimilation system. The resulting unfiltered radiances are eventually compared to the solar and thermal radiances derived by radiative transfer simulations over the three EarthCARE orbits. In addition, this end-to-end verification has provided further evidence on the high accuracy of the unfiltered radiance process, with accuracies better than 0.5 % for SW and better than 0.1 % for LW.

Global Daytime Mean Shortwave Flux Consistency Under Varying EPIC Viewing Geometries

One of the most crucial tasks of measuring top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiative flux is to understand the relationships between radiances and fluxes, particularly for the reflected shortwave (SW) fluxes. The radiance-to-flux conversion is accomplished by constructing angular distribution models (ADMs). This conversion depends on solar-viewing geometries as well as the scene types within the field of view. To date, the most comprehensive observation-based ADMs are developed using the Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) observations. These ADMs are used to derive TOA SW fluxes from CERES and other Earth radiation budget instruments which observe the Earth mostly from side-scattering angles. The Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) onboard Deep Space Climate Observatory observes the Earth at the Lagrange-1 point in the near-backscattering directions and offers a testbed for the CERES ADMs. As the EPIC relative azimuth angles change from 168◦ to 178◦, the global daytime mean SW radiances can increase by as much as 10% though no notable cloud changes are observed. The global daytime mean SW fluxes derived after considering the radiance anisotropies at relative azimuth angles of 168◦ and 178◦ show much smaller differences (<1%), indicating increases in EPIC SW radiances are due mostly to changes in viewing geometries. Furthermore, annual global daytime mean SW fluxes from EPIC agree with the CERES equivalents to within 0.5 Wm−2 with root-mean-square errors less than 3.0 Wm−2. Consistency between SW fluxes from EPIC and CERES inverted from very different viewing geometries indicates that the CERES ADMs accurately quantify the radiance anisotropy and can be used for flux inversion from different viewing perspectives.

Signal Processing Enhancements to Improve Instantaneous Accuracy of a Scanning Bolometer: Application to MERBE

Cloud radiative forcing climate signals cannot be detected and proved sufficiently by the existing space-based Earth Radiation Budget (ERB) measurements due to the insufficient instrument calibration accuracy, relative to the sizes of mere decadal-scale trends. This paper, therefore, introduces a new project called the Moon and ERB Experiment (MERBE). Its methodology is for all earth observations using broadband thermal detectors, such as bolometers, to adhere toward more traceable calibration standards based on scans of our moon. This traceability limits instrument-dependent biases and spurious drifts for the past decades of existing earth data measurements as well as future measurements. The goal of the MERBE project is to substantially increase existing satellite climate data accuracy; therefore, a reexamination of all aspects of space-based ERB device calibration was also warranted. This paper concentrates on the improvement of ERB data quality from the level of detector voltages and onward. A component model of bolometer thermal and electronic time response and offset effects is used to design an improved inversion filter, which deconvolves path direction dependence of a scanning thermal detector. For every ERB instrument on the TRMM, Terra, Aqua, and SNPP satellites, instantaneous error reductions are achieved in all recovered MERBE radiance measurements. This also will allow for more accurate results from ERB device lunar scans based on improved telescope field-of-view mapping, as presented in other MERBE work.

Quantifying the Effects of Horizontal Grid Length and Parameterized Convection on the Degree of Convective Organization Using a Metric of the Potential for Convective Interaction

Abstract The organization of deep convection and its misrepresentation in many global models is the focus of much current interest. A new method is presented for quantifying convective organization based on the identification of convective objects and subsequent derivation of object numbers, areas, and separation distances to describe the degree of convective organization. These parameters are combined into a “convection organization potential” based on the physical principle of an interaction potential between pairs of convective objects. This technique is applied to simulated and observed fields of outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) over the West African monsoon region using data from Met Office Unified Model simulations and satellite observations made by the Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB) instrument. The method is evaluated by using it to quantify differences between models with different horizontal grid lengths and representations of convection. Distributions of OLR, precipitation and organization parameters, the diurnal cycle of convection, and relationships between the meteorology in different states of organization are compared. Switching from a configuration with parameterized convection to one that allows the model to resolve convective processes at the model grid scale is the leading-order factor improving some aspects of model performance, while increased model resolution is the dominant factor for others. However, no single model configuration performs best compared to observations, indicating underlying deficiencies in both model scaling and process understanding.

Radiometric Characteristics of the Broadband Radiometer (BBR) Instrument for the EarthCARE Mission

AbstractThe Broadband Radiometer (BBR) is one of a suite of instruments to be flown on the Earth Clouds, Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) space mission. Its role is to make broadband measurements of Earth radiance in terms of reflected solar radiation and emitted thermal infrared radiation for use with the other EarthCARE instruments for the study of Earth atmosphere processes. The Broadband Radiometer has its design based on the principles and heritage of previous instruments for studying the earth radiation budget (ERB). The radiometer has common features with those instruments: two measurement bands—shortwave (solar energy of 0.25–4 µm) and total wave (0.25 to >50 µm)—with a longwave band (thermal emission of 4 to >50 µm) being obtained by subtraction of the two measured bands. Multiple simultaneous views of Earth at three different view angles are used to account for angular variations in radiance. The radiometer requires an accuracy of 1% in each band, similar to those of the previous instruments, and detailed calibration measurements on ground and in orbit. This paper describes the instrument calibration algorithms and the corresponding requirements on the ground calibration of the flight instrument prior to launch. It includes a description of the main methods to be used and the error sources to be controlled, based on the design heritage and analysis results of the previous ERB instruments.

Diffraction and polarization effects in Earth radiation budget measurements.

Thermal radiation emitted and reflected from the Earth and viewed from near-Earth orbit may be characterized by its spectral distribution, its degree of coherence, and its state of polarization. The current generation of broadband Earth radiation budget instruments has been designed to minimize the effect of diffraction and polarization on science products. We used Monte Carlo ray-trace (MCRT) models that treat individual rays as quasi-monochromatic, polarized entities to explore the possibility of improving the performance of such instruments by including measures of diffraction and polarization during calibration and operation. We have demonstrated that diffraction and polarization sensitivity associated with typical Earth radiation budget instrument design features has a negligible effect on measurements.

An assessment of the quality of aerosol retrievals over the Red Sea and evaluation of the climatological cloud-free dust direct radiative effect in the region

Ground-based and satellite observations are used in conjunction with the Rapid Radiative Transfer Model (RRTM) to assess climatological aerosol loading and the associated cloud-free aerosol direct radiative effect (DRE) over the Red Sea. Aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrievals from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer and Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager (SEVIRI) instruments are first evaluated via comparison with ship-based observations. Correlations are typically better than 0.9 with very small root-mean-square and bias differences. Calculations of the DRE along the ship cruises using RRTM also show good agreement with colocated estimates from the Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget instrument if the aerosol asymmetry parameter is adjusted to account for the presence of large particles. A monthly climatology of AOD over the Red Sea is then created from 5 years of SEVIRI retrievals. This shows enhanced aerosol loading and a distinct north to south gradient across the basin in the summer relative to the winter months. The climatology is used with RRTM to estimate the DRE at the top and bottom of the atmosphere and the atmospheric absorption due to dust aerosol. These climatological estimates indicate that although longwave effects can reach tens of W m−2, shortwave cooling typically dominates the net radiative effect over the Sea, being particularly pronounced in the summer, reaching 120 W m−2 at the surface. The spatial gradient in summertime AOD is reflected in the radiative effect at the surface and in associated differential heating by aerosol within the atmosphere above the Sea. This asymmetric effect is expected to exert a significant influence on the regional atmospheric and oceanic circulation.

A one‐year study of the diurnal cycle of meteorology, clouds and radiation in the West African Sahel region

The diurnal cycles of meteorological and radiation variables are analysed during the wet and dry seasons over the Sahel region of West Africa during 2006 using surface data collected by the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) programme's Mobile Facility, satellite radiation measurements from the Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB) instrument aboard Meteosat 8, and reanalysis products from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). The meteorological analysis builds upon past studies of the diurnal cycle in the region by incorporating diurnal cycles of lower tropospheric wind profiles, thermodynamic profiles, integrated water vapour and liquid water measurements, and cloud radar measurements of frequency and location. These meteorological measurements are complemented by 3 h measurements of the diurnal cycles of the top‐of‐atmosphere (TOA) and surface short‐wave (SW) and long‐wave (LW) radiative fluxes and cloud radiative effects (CREs), and the atmospheric radiative flux divergence (RFD) and atmospheric CREs. Cirrus cloudiness during the dry season is shown to peak in coverage in the afternoon, while convective clouds during the wet season are shown to peak near dawn and have an afternoon minimum related to the rise of the lifting condensation level into the Saharan Air Layer. The LW and SW RFDs and CREs exhibit diurnal cycles during both seasons, but there is a relatively small difference in the LW cycles during the two seasons (10 − 30 W m−2 depending on the variable and time of day). Small differences in the TOA CREs during the two seasons are overwhelmed by large differences in the surface SW CREs, which exceed 100 W m−2. A significant surface SW CRE during the wet season combined with a negligible TOA SW CRE produces a diurnal cycle in the atmospheric CRE that is modulated primarily by the SW surface CRE, peaks at midday at ∼150 W m−2, and varies widely from day to day.

Modelling the diurnal cycle of tropical convection across the ‘grey zone’

AbstractWe present the results of simulations carried out with the Met Office Unified Model at 12, 4 and 1.5 km resolution for a large region centred on West Africa using several different representations of the convection processes. These span a range of resolutions from much coarser than the size of the convection processes to cloud‐system‐resolving and thus encompass the intermediate ‘grey zone’. The diurnal cycle in the extent of convective regions in the models is tested against observations from the Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget instrument on Meteosat‐8. By this measure, the two best‐performing simulations are a 12 km model without convective parametrization, using Smagorinsky‐style subgrid‐scale mixing in all three dimensions, and a 1.5 km simulation with two‐dimensional Smagorinsky mixing. Of these, the 12 km model produces a better match to the magnitude of the total cloud fraction but the 1.5 km one results in better timing for its peak value. The results suggest that the previously reported improvement in the representation of the diurnal cycle of convective organization in the 4 km model compared with the standard 12 km configuration is principally a result of the convection scheme employed rather than the improved resolution per se. The details of this result and implications for high‐resolution model simulations are discussed.

Examination of long‐wave radiative bias in general circulation models over North Africa during May–July

AbstractSatellite data are used to quantify and examine the bias in the outgoing long‐wave (LW) radiation over North Africa during May–July simulated by a range of climate models and the Met Office global numerical weather prediction (NWP) model. Simulations from an ensemble‐mean of multiple climate models overestimate outgoing clear‐sky long‐wave radiation (LWc) by more than 20 W m−2 relative to observations from Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) for May–July 2000 over parts of the west Sahara, and by 9 W m−2 for the North Africa region (20°W–30°E, 10–40°N). Experiments with the atmosphere‐only version of the High‐resolution Hadley Centre Global Environment Model (HiGEM), suggest that including mineral dust radiative effects removes this bias. Furthermore, only by reducing surface temperature and emissivity by unrealistic amounts is it possible to explain the magnitude of the bias.Comparing simulations from the Met Office NWP model with satellite observations from Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB) instruments suggests that the model overestimates the LW by 20–40 W m−2 during North African summer. The bias declines over the period 2003–2008, although this is likely to relate to improvements in the model and inhomogeneity in the satellite time series. The bias in LWc coincides with high aerosol dust loading estimated from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), including during the GERBILS field campaign (18–28 June 2007) where model overestimates in LWc greater than 20 W m−2 and OMI‐estimated aerosol optical depth (AOD) greater than 0.8 are concurrent around 20°N, 0–20°W. A model‐minus‐GERB LW bias of around 30 W m−2 coincides with high AOD during the period 18–21 June 2007, although differences in cloud cover also impact the model–GERB differences. Evaluation of the model representation of the evolution of convective systems using satellite observations of outgoing longwave radiation

We introduce a technique for assessing the diurnal development of convective storm systems based on outgoing longwave radiation fields. Using the size distribution of the storms measured from a series of images, we generate an array in the length scale‐time domain based on the standard score statistic. It demonstrates succinctly the size evolution of storms as well as the dissipation kinematics. It also provides evidence related to the temperature evolution of the cloud tops. We apply this approach to a test case comparing observations made by the Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget instrument to output from the Met Office Unified Model run at two resolutions. The 12 km resolution model produces peak convective activity on all length scales significantly earlier in the day than shown by the observations and no evidence for storms growing in size. The 4 km resolution model shows realistic timing and growth evolution, although the dissipation mechanism still differs from the observed data.

An assessment of Saharan dust loading and the corresponding cloud‐free longwave direct radiative effect from geostationary satellite observations

Previously, a method was developed to quantify Saharan dust optical thickness and simultaneously diagnose the cloud‐free longwave dust direct radiative effect (LWDRE) over a single surface site using observations from the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) and Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB) instrument both flying on the Meteosat Second Generation series of satellites. In this paper the overall utility of the approach is investigated using a more comprehensive suite of observations, and the inherent uncertainties associated with the method are assessed. On the basis of these findings, the approach has been updated to account for the effects of varying dust layer altitude. Comparisons with colocated observations from the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) and Multiangle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR) using the modified approach indicate that the visible optical thickness at 0.55 μm, τ055, can be obtained with an RMS uncertainty of ∼0.3 over North Africa and Arabia during sunlit hours, while monthly maps of optical depth derived over this region through spring and summer of 2006 show similar variability to that identified in the long‐term climatology provided by the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) Aerosol Index. The regional mean instantaneous cloud‐free LWDRE and associated LW radiative efficiency estimated from GERB over the same period are relatively constant with season, ranging from 9 to 11 W m−2 and 16–20 W m−2τ055−1, respectively.

Top-of-Atmosphere Radiance-to-Flux Conversion in the SW Domain for the ScaRaB-3 Instrument on Megha-Tropiques

Abstract The earth radiation budget (ERB) is the difference between the solar absorbed flux and the terrestrial emitted flux. These fluxes are calculated from satellite measurements of outgoing shortwave (SW) and longwave (LW) radiances using empirical or theoretical models of the radiation anisotropy, which are called angular distribution models (ADMs). Owing to multidirectional measurement analyses and synergy with multispectral information at subpixel scale, the ADM developed for the NASA Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) mission is presently the best knowledge and has to be taken into account for future ERB missions, such as the Indian–French Megha-Tropiques mission to be launched in 2010. This mission will carry an ERB instrument called the Scanner for Radiation Budget (ScaRaB). To prepare the algorithms for the ScaRaB ADM retrievals, the artificial neural network (ANN) method described by the CERES team has been adopted and improved by replacing the broadband (BB) radiances by narrowband (NB) radiances from the auxiliary channels of ScaRaB as input variables of the ANN. This article is restricted to the SW domain, the most critical case, and shows that the flux error is reduced by 60% compared to the former ERB Experiment–like model. The rms differences with the CERES fluxes are around 8.4 W m−2. ScaRaB/Megha-Tropiques measurements have a 4 times lower spatial resolution than those of the CERES/Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM). The impact of this spatial degradation has also been explored. There is a small systematic bias of about 1.5 W m−2 (or an absolute albedo error of 0.0015) and the rms differences are less than 3 W m−2; this is not significant compared to the overall error budget. For the radiance-to-flux conversion in the SW domain, the BB and NB ANN methods will be implemented in the ScaRaB/Megha-Tropiques data processing in order to provide SW flux estimates with an accuracy that is as consistent as possible with CERES results.

Simulation of surface and top of atmosphere thermal fluxes and radiances from the radiative atmospheric divergence using the ARM Mobile Facility, GERB data, and AMMA Stations experiment

Simultaneous observations of thermal radiative fluxes and radiances from the surface (Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Mobile Facility, Niamey) and top of atmosphere (Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB) instrument) during the Radiative Atmospheric Divergence using ARM Mobile Facility, GERB data, and AMMA Stations experiment are compared with results from a radiative transfer model (Edwards‐Slingo). Emphasis is placed on diagnosing the accuracy of the cloud‐free radiation measurements using multiple instruments at the surface. The surface forcing from aerosol is found to regularly exceed 20 Wm−2, and reached ∼100 Wm−2 during the March 2006 dust storm. Equivalent comparisons are made with top of atmosphere (TOA) measurements but here radiance closure is not achieved. A disagreement is found between the angular anisotropy derived from GERB products and that from radiative transfer (RT) calculations. A hybrid TOA radiative flux time series is created using RT‐calculated TOA anisotropy and GERB‐observed TOA radiance. At 1100 UT (local noon), this hybrid flux differs from the Edition 1 GERB product by a positive difference in the range ∼0–10 Wm−2. Three collections of fluxes exist to calculate column‐integrated atmospheric heating (divergence) from surface and TOA fluxes. The first two are fluxes from observations only or from RT calculations only. The third is a combination of RT calculation and observed fluxes that includes the hybrid flux. The resulting divergences are binned by sonde launch times and averaged over the year. The range of divergence during a day depends on the flux collection used (−200 to −111 Wm−2, −212 to −116 Wm−2, or −205 to −112 Wm−2) for observations only, for RT calculations only, or for observation‐calculation fluxes. All estimates agree as to the interday variation being larger than that of intraday variability.

Overview of observations from the RADAGAST experiment in Niamey, Niger: 2. Radiative fluxes and divergences

Broadband shortwave and longwave radiative fluxes observed both at the surface and from space during the Radiative Atmospheric Divergence using ARM Mobile Facility, GERB data and AMMA Stations (RADAGAST) experiment in Niamey, Niger, in 2006 are presented. The surface fluxes were measured by the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program Mobile Facility (AMF) at Niamey airport, while the fluxes at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) are from the Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB) instrument on the Meteosat‐8 satellite. The data are analyzed as daily averages, in order to minimize sampling differences between the surface and top of atmosphere instruments, while retaining the synoptic and seasonal changes that are the main focus of this study. A cloud mask is used to identify days with cloud versus those with predominantly clear skies. The influence of temperature, water vapor, aerosols, and clouds is investigated. Aerosols are ubiquitous throughout the year and have a significant impact on both the shortwave and longwave fluxes. The large and systematic seasonal changes in temperature and column integrated water vapor (CWV) through the dry and wet seasons are found to exert strong influences on the longwave fluxes. These influences are often in opposition to each other, because the highest temperatures occur at the end of the dry season when the CWV is lowest, while in the wet season the lowest temperatures are associated with the highest values of CWV. Apart from aerosols, the shortwave fluxes are also affected by clouds and by the seasonal changes in CWV. The fluxes are combined to provide estimates of the divergence of radiation across the atmosphere throughout 2006. The longwave divergence shows a relatively small variation through the year, because of a partial compensation between the seasonal variations in the outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) and surface net longwave radiation. A simple model of the greenhouse effect is used to interpret this result in terms of the dependence of the normalized greenhouse effect at the TOA and of the effective emissivity of the atmosphere at the surface on the CWV. It is shown that, as the CWV increases, the atmosphere loses longwave energy to the surface with about the same increasing efficiency with which it traps the OLR. When combined with the changes in temperature, this maintains the atmospheric longwave divergence within the narrow range that is observed. The shortwave divergence is mainly determined by the CWV and aerosol loadings and the effect of clouds is much smaller than on the component fluxes.

Celestial body irradiance determination from an underfilled satellite radiometer: application to albedo and thermal emission measurements of the Moon using CERES

The Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) is a program that measures the Earth radiation budget (ERB) from two polar orbiting satellite platforms. CERES radiometers are designed to make stable broadband measurements of scattered solar and emitted thermal radiative flux leaving Earth with an accuracy of 1% or better. Using versatile and programmable scan modes, it is also possible for every CERES instrument to view the Moon on each orbit. However, until now, it has not been possible to derive absolute measurements of lunar irradiance using CERES because the Moon's disk fills only 10% of the telescope field of view. This work presents a method of integrating CERES raster-scan data in order to obtain a measurement of the average scattered solar and emitted thermal radiance from the entire lunar disk. The technique results in excellent agreement between CERES instruments on different satellites as to lunar albedo and emitted thermal flux. The average broadband Moon albedo is measured by CERES at a value of 0.1362 (+/-2-3%) when normalized to a static lunar phase angle of 7 degrees using the U.S. Geological Survey lunar irradiance Robotic Lunar Observatory model. The method for the first time also yields very accurate measurements of the thermal irradiance emitted from the Moon. These suggest an average long-wave flux of 977 Wm(-2) (+/-2-3% at 7 degrees phase), implying an approximate mean surface temperature of around 92 degrees C. Statistical analysis on available data suggests that a CERES instrument performing monthly lunar measurements could utilize the Moon as a stability target and reduce calibration drifts to 0.3% per decade or less within an instrument's lifetime. Given the success of the technique, a solar calibration system is proposed that will allow precise tracking of an ERB instrument's optical degradation using the Sun.

Modeled and observed atmospheric radiation balance during the West African dry season: Role of mineral dust, biomass burning aerosol, and surface albedo

The global radiation balance of the atmosphere is still poorly observed, particularly at the surface. We investigate the observed radiation balance at (1) the surface using the ARM Mobile Facility in Niamey, Niger, and (2) the top of the atmosphere (TOA) over West Africa using data from the Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB) instrument on board Meteosat‐8. Observed radiative fluxes are compared with predictions from the global numerical weather prediction (NWP) version of the Met Office Unified Model (MetUM). The evaluation points to major shortcomings in the NWP model's radiative fluxes during the dry season (December 2005 to April 2006) arising from (1) a lack of absorbing aerosol in the model (mineral dust and biomass burning aerosol) and (2) a poor specification of the surface albedo. A case study of the major Saharan dust outbreak of 6–12 March 2006 is used to evaluate a parameterization of mineral dust for use in the NWP models. The model shows good predictability of the large‐scale flow out to 4–5 days with the dust parameterization providing reasonable dust uplift, spatial distribution, and temporal evolution for this strongly forced dust event. The direct radiative impact of the dust reduces net downward shortwave (SW) flux at the surface (TOA) by a maximum of 200 W m−2 (150 W m−2), with a SW heating of the atmospheric column. The impacts of dust on terrestrial radiation are smaller. Comparisons of TOA (surface) radiation balance with GERB (ARM) show the “dusty” forecasts reduce biases in the radiative fluxes and improve surface temperatures and vertical thermodynamic structure.

Unfiltering of the Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB) Data. Part II: Longwave Radiation

Abstract The method used to estimate the unfiltered longwave broadband radiance from the filtered radiances measured by the Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB) instrument is presented. This unfiltering method is used to generate the first released edition of the GERB-2 dataset. This method involves a set of regressions between the unfiltering factor (i.e., the ratio of the unfiltered and filtered broadband radiances) and the narrowband observations of the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) instrument. The regressions are theoretically derived from a large database of simulated spectral radiance curves obtained by radiative transfer computations. The generation of this database is fully described. Different sources of error that may affect the GERB unfiltering have been identified and the associated error magnitudes are assessed on the database. For most of the earth–atmosphere conditions, the error introduced during the unfiltering processes is well under 0.5% (RMS error of about 0.1%). For more confidence, the unfiltered radiances of GERB-2 are validated by cross comparison with collocated and coangular Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) observations. The agreement between the unfiltered radiances is within the science goals (1% accuracy for GERB and 0.5% for CERES) for the Flight Model 2 (FM2). For the CERES Flight Model 3 (FM3) instrument, an overall difference of 1.8% is observed. The intercomparisons indicate some scene-type dependency, which is due to the unfiltering for the cloudy scenes. This should be corrected for subsequent editions of the database.

This unfiltering method is used to generate the first released edition of the GERB-2 dataset. The method involves a set of regressions between the unfiltering factor (i.e., the ratio of the unfiltered and filtered broadband radiances) and the narrowband observations of the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) instrument. The regressions are theoretically derived from a large database of simulated spectral radiance curves obtained by radiative transfer computations. The generation of the database is fully described. Different sources of error that may affect the GERB unfiltering have been identified and the associated error magnitudes are assessed on this database. For most of the earth–atmosphere conditions, the error introduced during the unfiltering process is below 1%. In some conditions (e.g., low sun elevation above the horizon) the error can present a higher relative value, but the absolute error value remains well under the accuracy goal of 1% of the full instrument scale (2.4 W m−2 sr−1). To increase the confidence level, the edition 1 unfiltered radiances of GERB-2 are validated by cross comparison with collocated and coangular Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) observations for different scene types. In addition to an overall offset between the two instruments, the intercomparisons indicate a scene-type dependency up to 4% in unfiltered radiance. Further studies are required to confirm the cause, but an insufficiently accurate characterization of the shortwave spectral response of the GERB instrument in the visible part of the spectrum is one area under further investigation.

Assessing the Errors in Shortwave Radiative Fluxes Inferred from the Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB) Instrument in the Presence of Dust Aerosol

Abstract The Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB) instruments flying on the Meteosat Second Generation series of satellites provide a unique tool with which to monitor the diurnal evolution of top-of-atmosphere broadband radiation fields. GERB products, which have recently been released to the scientific community, include aerosol information in addition to the observed radiances and inferred fluxes. However, no account of the anisotropic characteristics of aerosol has been incorporated in the radiance-to-flux conversion, which uses angular distribution models developed for clear or cloudy conditions. Here an attempt is made to quantify the impact of this omission in the shortwave (SW), focusing on dust-contaminated scenes. An observationally based representation of dust is used to develop a theoretical angular distribution model, which is tested through comparison with observed GERB radiances. For dusty scenes that have been processed as clear ocean, applying the dust model to convert GERB radiances to fluxes reduces the SW reflected flux by an average of approximately 12 W m−2 relative to the original GERB fluxes. This value ranges from −4 to +55 W m−2, depending on observation geometry and dust loading. For dusty scenes that the GERB processing has treated as cloudy, GERB fluxes are generally smaller than values obtained using the dust-specific model. On average, over the time period studied here, the two effects partially cancel, and the overall mean difference is 2.5 W m−2. However, it is shown that this cancellation is highly sensitive to the location and time period under consideration.
