The National Institutes of Health Lasker Clinical Research Scholars Program: A Decade of Launching Clinician-Scientist Careers.

In response to the decades-long decrease in U.S. clinician-scientists, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation launched the Lasker Clinical Research Scholars Program in academic year 2011 to 2012. The investigators examined the early outcomes of this program. Thirty-nine scholars have matriculated into the program as of May 2023. Productivity was assessed for all scholars who joined the program before October 2020 (n = 31). Extramural early-stage investigators (ESIs) were used as a control group, and coarsened exact matching was used to compare the groups. The scholars were compared with the matched ESIs on 4 productivity metrics: publication count, weighted relative citation ratio, clinical impact, and approximate potential to translate. Publication records for both groups were compiled using the NIH Office of Portfolio Analysis' name disambiguation method and manually curated to ensure integrity of the data set. Of the 39 scholars, 29 were compared with 121 matched extramural ESIs. Five years before matriculation, the 2 groups had comparable numbers of publications, but scholars had a higher median weighted relative citation ratio, clinical impact, and approximate potential to translate score. Five years after matriculation, the scholars had a higher median number of publications than the ESIs, and the gap between scholars and ESIs, with scholars having higher scores, had widened for all metrics except approximate potential to translate scores. Of 10 of the 39 scholars at or approaching tenure eligibility, 6 have attained tenure (3 at NIH and 3 in academic institutions), and 4 are on track to attain tenure at NIH. All the Lasker clinical research scholars are substantially involved in clinical and translational research. Their productivity matches or exceeds that of a matched cohort of ESIs at U.S. academic institutions.

Intersectional Mentorship in Academic Medicine: A Conceptual Review.

Academic medical institutions seek to recruit and retain a diverse workforce to foster equitable, supportive environments in which early-stage investigators, especially those who are underrepresented in medicine, can thrive. Intersectionality is a critical theoretical framework rooted in Black feminist activism and scholarship that elucidates how power and privilege are differentially structured for groups at different intersectional sociodemographic positions. As a dynamic method of analyzing multiple axes of power and inequality, intersectionality has the potential to offer a critical lens through which to view the mentor-mentee relationship. In this article, we seek to elaborate upon and extend the concept of intersectional mentoring, elucidate its essential components, and explore its application in the context of mentoring early-stage investigators in academic medicine. We propose that intersectional mentorship requires an orientation toward deep cultural humility, lifetime learning about the impact of systemic oppressions on present-day opportunities and experiences of mentees, and changing systems that perpetuate inequities by centering praxis-the application of principles of intersectionality through action to transform power dynamics in academic culture and institutions. Intersectional mentorship can help build a more equitable and representative workforce to advance intersectionally relevant and innovative approaches to achieving health equity.

124 An educational curriculum, mentors’ preparedness and certification, a mentored research experience and a support network: strategies to increase diversity and inclusion in the Clinical and Translational Research (CTR) workforce among underrepresented researchers.

OBJECTIVES/GOALS: The Professional Development Core (PDC) of the Hispanic Alliance for Clinical and Translational Research (The Alliance) has implemented a multifaceted program to support Early-Stage Investigators (ESI) and mid-career investigators to increase productivity and achieve success in their research endeavors. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Since 2021, PDC launched an educational program tailored for ESI or mid-career investigators, addressing specific gaps in research competencies. A needs assessment survey gathered information from these investigators, and its results served as the foundation for the program’s design. In addition, recognizing the need for excellence in mentoring, PDC spearheaded a program to provide a certification curriculum for new or experienced mentors. Experienced researchers were encouraged to participate in the certification process with ample opportunities to discuss their mentoring experiences and the incorporation of new approaches that emphasize diversity and inclusion. A structured mentored research experience with support for protected time for the investigator and the mentors was also implemented. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: Four investigators and their mentors have received the Mentor-Mentee Award (100% PhD, 75% female, 50% Assistant Professor, 75% ESI, 75% with mentors from the mainland United States). Their program’s evaluation will be presented. Thirty-two (32) researchers have participated in the courses in Health Disparity and Scientific Communication. Support for grant writing was offered through a three-pronged approach: a webinar series, a course in Grantsmanship and a grant’s bootcamp. Twenty-four (24) mentors were certified, and over 30 training activities were offered to supply knowledge in areas previously identified in the needs assessment. We will present the complete curriculum, courses offerings, participants’ profiles, and productivity outcomes. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE: Alliance educational and mentoring supportive network increased the diversity of CTR workforce and prepared qualified researchers to address the Hispanics health needs. Collaborations with mainland researchers have expanded the PDC program’s reach and contributed to the enhancement of the Hispanic contribution to the health research ecosystem.

152 Building the Future of Dissemination and Implementation (D&I) Science at Frontiers CTSI: Capacity Building, Infrastructure, and Emerging Research Areas

OBJECTIVES/GOALS: A diverse workforce is an aspiration of CTSIs and embedded in goals to build D&I workforce capacity. However, little research describes the diversity of the current workforce. We assessed current assets, opportunities, and diversity of D&I efforts at Frontiers and characterized investigators and those supported by services offered. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: In January 2021, Frontiers convened a working group to identify existing D&I assets and needs in the CTSI multi-state catchment area. The committee catalogued existing training and consultation resources and services, which the CTSI supported with infrastructure to support, track, and evaluate ongoing efforts. We obtained data from the evaluation platform and conducted descriptive analyses of the investigators and service uptake among two programs offered, contrasting the workforce with national data obtained from the American Academy of Medical Colleges (2022) and the National Institutes of Health (2018). RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: Ninety individuals at 9 institutions across Kansas and Missouri identified as implementation researchers. Since 2022, 28 D&I consultations were provided, 92% for grant applications. Five early-stage investigators were identified for career development in an NIH-supported Health Equity and Implementation Center (ESI). The network mirrors the larger workforce regarding underrepresented racial/ethnic minorities (18%) and new investigators (60%). More women (76%) are represented in the D&I network and among ESIs (80%) than the academic workforce (44%), but significantly fewer women used consultation services (p<0.001). Lower proportions of underrepresented minority investigators (p<0.001) and investigators from disadvantaged statuses (p=0.027) accessed consultations services. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE: Investigators underrepresented in science on multiple dimensions were less likely to use consulting services, Outreach for consultation services may be necessary, if needs are not being met in other programs. Further exploration of overall D&I workforce trends is needed to ensure goals for the field and the CTSA network are achieved.

Evolving surface wettability in laser-powder bed fusion printed metal parts

This study presents an early-stage investigation of the evolving surface wettability of metal parts fabricated using laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF). Various printing strategies, surface orientations, and post-processing methods were evaluated to determine their influence on wettability. Results showed that the wetting properties of AlSi10Mg printed parts were initially superhydrophilic but transitioned to slightly hydrophilic after prolonged air exposure. Additionally, downskin surfaces exhibited higher roughness due to the presence of fused satellite particles. These findings underscore the inherent instability of wetting behavior in metal alloys produced by L-PBF and highlight the need for further exploration of postprocessing techniques to achieve consistent surface wettability.

Social network analysis of the CaRE2 health equity center: Team science in full display.

Cancer health disparities that exist in the Black or African American and Hispanic or Latino/x communities are scientific challenges, yet there are limited team science approaches to mitigate these challenges. This article's purpose is to evaluate the team science collaborations of the National Institutes of Health-funded Florida-California Cancer Research, Education & Engagement (CaRE2 ) Center partnership underscoring the inclusion of multidisciplinary team members and future under-represented minority (URM) cancer researchers. To understand our collaborative efforts, we conducted a social network analysis (SNA) of the CaRE2 Center partnership among University of Florida, Florida A&M University, and University of Southern California with data collected via the dimensions.ai application programming interface. We downloaded metadata for all publications associated with dimensions.ai IDs. The CaRE2 collaboration network increased over time as evidenced by accruing more external collaborators and more publishing of collaborative works. Degree centrality of key personnel was stable in each wave of the networks. CaRE2 key personnel averaged a total of 60.8 collaborators in 2018-2019 (SD = 57.4, minimum = 3, maximum = 221), and 65.8 collaborators in 2020-2021 (SD = 56.06, minimum = 4, maximum = 222). Betweenness was largely stable across all groups and waves. We observed a steady decline in transitivity, the probability that a pair of CaRE2 co-authors shared a third co-author, from 0.74 in 2018 to 0.47 in 2022. The SNA findings suggest that the CaRE2 Center partnership's publications show growth in team science collaborations with the inclusion of multidisciplinary team members from the three partner institutions and future URM cancer researchers who were mentored as trainees and early-stage investigators.

Early ultrasonic vocalization deficits and related thyroarytenoid muscle pathology in the transgenic TgF344-AD rat model of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurologic disease and the most common cause of dementia. Classic pathology in AD is characterized by inflammation, abnormal presence of tau protein, and aggregation of β-amyloid that disrupt normal neuronal function and lead to cell death. Deficits in communication also occur during disease progression and significantly reduce health, well-being, and quality of life. Because clinical diagnosis occurs in the mid-stage of the disease, characterizing the prodrome and early stages in humans is currently challenging. To overcome these challenges, we use the validated TgF344-AD (F344-Tg(Prp-APP, Prp-PS1)19/Rrrc) transgenic rat model that manifests cognitive, behavioral, and neuropathological dysfunction akin to AD in humans. The overarching goal of our work is to test the central hypothesis that pathology and related behavioral deficits such as communication dysfunction in part manifest in the peripheral nervous system and corresponding target tissues already in the early stages. The primary aims of this study are to test the hypotheses that: (1) changes in ultrasonic vocalizations (USV) occur in the prodromal stage at 6 months of age and worsen at 9 months of age, (2) inflammation as well as AD-related pathology can be found in the thyroarytenoid muscle (TA) at 12 months of age (experimental endpoint tissue harvest), and to (3) demonstrate that the TgF344-AD rat model is an appropriate model for preclinical investigations of early AD-related vocal deficits. USVs were collected from male TgF344-AD (N = 19) and wildtype (WT) Fischer-344 rats (N = 19) at 6 months (N = 38; WT: n = 19; TgF344-AD: n = 19) and 9 months of age (N = 18; WT: n = 10; TgF344-AD: n = 8) and acoustically analyzed for duration, mean power, principal frequency, low frequency, high frequency, peak frequency, and call type. RT-qPCR was used to assay peripheral inflammation and AD-related pathology via gene expressions in the TA muscle of male TgF344-AD rats (n = 6) and WT rats (n = 6) at 12 months of age. This study revealed a significant reduction in mean power of ultrasonic calls from 6 to 9 months of age and increased peak frequency levels over time in TgF344-AD rats compared to WT controls. Additionally, significant downregulation of AD-related genes Uqcrc2, Bace2, Serpina3n, and Igf2, as well as downregulation of pro-inflammatory gene Myd88 was found in the TA muscle of TgF344-AD rats at 12 months of age. Our findings demonstrate early and progressive vocal deficits in the TgF344-AD rat model. We further provide evidence of dysregulation of AD-pathology-related genes as well as inflammatory genes in the TA muscles of TgF344-AD rats in the early stage of the disease, confirming this rat model for early-stage investigations of voice deficits and related pathology.

BS GSA AND AGE JOINT SYMPOSIUM

Abstract Since 2020, BS GSA and American Aging Association (AGE) recognized the opportunity to present a joint session regularly at each organization’s national meeting. Given our unique positions in the field of aging research, we recognize the opportunity to advance each other’s missions and strengthen the ecosystem to advance translation of aging research into practice and policy. This symposium has been a resounding success and an ideal forum for early-stage investigators who seek to develop a program at the interface of basic and clinical research.

Abstract A045: Adhering to a culturally responsive framework: Integrating kinship into a multilevel community-based intervention for American Indian adults with comorbid type 2 diabetes and cancer

Abstract The prolific disparities of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cancer in tribal communities is well documented. American Indian (AI) adults living with T2D are at greater risk of not only developing cancer, but also dying from it, with cooccurrence becoming increasingly prevalent. On rural tribal reservations, common environmental diabetogenic factors (e.g., obesity, lack of physical activity, poor diet, and stress) are considered as sources of elevated risk for both T2D and cancer. Critically important in improving both diabetes and cancer-related health behaviors and outcomes, particularly for AI people, is psychosocial support from family and community ties (e.g., kinship). Despite supporting evidence, few interventions include kinship as a key factor to promote best outcomes for T2D management among AI adults with a dual diagnosis of cancer. To address this growing issue, there is an urgent need for culturally and contextually adapted interventions aiming to address the cooccurrence of T2D and cancer that are, ideally, led by tribal communities.   In this session, healthcare professional Early-Stage Investigators (ESIs), some of whom also identify as AI, will present community-based participatory research (CBPR) principles used to develop a multilevel Tribally tailored intervention, with kinship as a moderating factor, for AI adults living with both T2D and cancer. The ESIs represent a unique pool of providers invested in the community within which they work by co-creating an intervention which utilizes pre-existing strong community and familial norms. The ESIs further look to break away from the common trend in research to overgeneralize interventions and findings to all AI Tribal communities by tailoring the intervention to each specific Tribal Community engaged in the research intervention. To foster innovative research methods by emphasizing important historic and socio-cultural influences relevant to understanding the holistic context of health disparities in tribal communities, the guiding framework is the NIMHD Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Framework adapted for AI and Alaska Native Nations. In this research, individuals are viewed within the context of the broader social system where they function daily, while families and community are key stakeholders and leaders in the successful management of T2D and cancer. The approach focuses on diabetes-related barriers by providing family and social units with skills for successful T2D and cancer management, healthy communication, and shared commitment. In addition to these domains of influence, involving community systems is critical for a sustainable intervention that effectively addresses health disparities for T2D and cancer.   Citation Format: Sheila L. Leveraging the adolescent brain cognitive development study to advance and promote adolescent health: Introduction to the special issue.

The empirical reports in this special issue of Health Psychology showcase the work of a diverse array of accomplished early-stage investigators who are members of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study consortium and who are drawn from the community of female and underrepresented scientists. Their studies focus primarily on youth assessed during preadolescence and early adolescence, and they are based on the ABCD data that were available to the scientific community at the time this special issue was being prepared (e.g., baseline, Years 1 and 2 assessments). They address a variety of questions about adolescent health behavior, such as the effects of screen time and caffeine on sleep; individual lifestyle, neighborhood, and environmental factors associated with physical health conditions and brain development; and the antecedents and consequences of prenatal and adolescent substance exposure. The 8th International RASopathies Symposium: Expanding research and care practice through global collaboration and advocacy.

Germline pathogenic variants in the RAS/mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway are the molecular cause of RASopathies, a group of clinically overlapping genetic syndromes. RASopathies constitute a wide clinical spectrum characterized by distinct facial features, short stature, predisposition to cancer, and variable anomalies in nearly all the major body systems. With increasing global recognition of these conditions, the 8th International RASopathies Symposium spotlighted global perspectives on clinical care and research, including strategies for building international collaborations and developing diverse patient cohorts in anticipation of interventional trials. This biannual meeting, organized by RASopathies Network, was held in a hybrid virtual/in-person format. The agenda featured emerging discoveries and case findings as well as progress in preclinical and therapeutic pipelines. Stakeholders including basic scientists, clinician-scientists, practitioners, industry representatives, patients, and family advocates gathered to discuss cutting edge science, recognize current gaps in knowledge, and hear from people with RASopathies about the experience of daily living. Presentations by RASopathy self-advocates and early-stage investigators were featured throughout the program to encourage a sustainable, diverse, long-term research and advocacy partnership focused on improving health and bringing treatments to people with RASopathies.

Transforming the Future of Surgeon-Scientists.

To create a blueprint for surgical department leaders, academic institutions, and funding agencies to optimally support surgeon-scientists. Scientific contributions by surgeons have been transformative across many medical disciplines. Surgeon-scientists provide a distinct approach and mindset toward key scientific questions. However, lack of institutional support, pressure for increased clinical productivity, and growing administrative burden are major challenges for the surgeon-scientist, as is the time-consuming nature of surgical training and practice. An American Surgical Association Research Sustainability Task Force was created to outline a blueprint for sustainable science in surgery. Leaders from top NIH-sponsored departments of surgery engaged in video and in-person meetings between January and April 2023. A strength, weakness, opportunities, threats analysis was performed, and workgroups focused on the roles of surgeons, the department and institutions, and funding agencies. Authentic recommitment from surgeon leaders with intentional and ambitious actions from institutions, corporations, funders, and society is essential in order to reap the essential benefits of surgeon-scientists toward advancements of science.

Pathways and Intersections: Multifaceted Approaches to Engage Individuals From Underrepresented and Marginalized Communities in HIV Research and Career Development.

The underrepresentation of historically marginalized groups in the HIV research workforce is a barrier to reaching national Ending the Epidemic goals. The Harvard University Center for AIDS Research (HU CFAR) Diversity Equity and Inclusion Working Group (DEI WG) uses a multifaceted approach to enhance the field's diversity. We established a DEI WG to improve the recruitment, inclusion, and retention of underrepresented minorities (URMs) in HIV research. We use community-based, participatory processes to establish and expand education and outreach programs about HIV care and research to better connect the HU CFAR to communities affected by HIV. This article reports on the development of the WG in July 2022, progress in its first year, and future plans. We have built a network of >50 investigators across the university for monthly meetings; partnered with existing research pathway programs for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students, directly supporting 7 new trainees and linking CFAR investigators to additional mentorship opportunities; and created 2-year Scholar Awards for 5 URM investigators in HIV. Planned work includes needs assessments for early-stage investigators to understand factors contributing to inclusion and retention and new pathway and outreach programming being developed with community partner minority-serving institutions. The HU CFAR DEI WG strives to ensure that individuals from underrepresented, marginalized, and minoritized communities have an opportunity to contribute to HIV research and that research is informed by the needs of the communities affected by the epidemic. An intersectional approach should be incorporated into HIV research pathway initiatives.

Establishment of a Private Foundation-Academic Partnership to Promote Careers of Early-Stage Investigators Examining the Influence of Sex and Gender on Health and Health Care.

Biological sex and gender-based constructs contribute significantly to the diversity of disease outcomes and treatment responses across the life course. To promote research considering sex and gender, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) launched the Specialized Centers of Research Excellence (SCORE) on sex differences program. The Career Enhancement Core (CEC) of the Johns Hopkins SCORE on Sex and Age Differences in Immunity to Influenza (SADII) partnered with the Foundation for Gender-Specific Medicine, which matched NIH funding to support seed grants. Over 3 years we awarded 12 (10 were women faculty) seed grants to early-stage investigators. One year after the award, the seed grant awardees highlighted their progress, including publications, grant applications, and abstracts. All awardees noted challenges with their progress related to the COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain delays and shared suggestions for improving the programming of the CEC. They also highlighted the multiple ways the awards had helped them gain pilot data toward larger grants, build collaborative relationships, and present at the annual SCORE symposium. We describe a model and evidence supporting a private-academic collaboration to support the careers of early-stage investigators conducting research related to sex and gender.

Design and Implementation of a Leadership Development Program for Early-Stage Investigators: Initial Results.

Leadership skills are essential for a successful career in medical research but are often not formally taught. To address these gaps, we designed a leadership development program for early-stage investigators. A 9-month virtual program with monthly 2-hour interactive sessions was designed, covering topics such as Leadership in Research, Mentoring, Building Diverse and Inclusive Teams, Managing Conflict, Influencing without Authority, Grant Administration, and Management. An anonymized survey was sent to participants before and after completion of the program, and the results were compared using the chi-squared test. Over a 2-year period, we selected two cohorts of 41 and 46 participants, respectively. After completion of the program, 92% of survey respondents indicated that the program met their expectations and 74% had made use of skills they learned. Participants enjoyed meeting new people and discussing common challenges. There was an increase in participants' perceived understanding of personal leadership qualities, mentoring, communication, conflict resolution, grant management, and collaboration with industry (P < .05). A leadership development program for early-stage investigators led to a significant increase in participants' perceived understanding of personal leadership qualities and competencies. It also offered participants the opportunity to meet other researchers in the institution and discuss common challenges.

Senescence and Inflammation: Summary of a Gerontological Society of America and National Institute on Aging-Sponsored Symposium.

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) sponsored a symposium at the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) annual meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana to discuss recent discoveries related to senescent and inflammatory mechanisms in aging and disease. Consistent with the 2022 Biological Sciences GSA program led by Dr. Rozalyn Anderson, the symposium featured early-stage investigators and a leader in the field of geroscience research. Cell senescence and immune interactions coordinate homeostatic and protective programming throughout the lifespan. Dysfunctional communication in this exchange eventuates in inflammation-related compositional changes in aged tissues, including propagation of the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) and accumulation of senescent and exhausted immune cells. Presentations in this symposium explored senescent and immune-related dysfunction in aging from diverse viewpoints and featured emerging cellular and molecular methods. A central take-away from the event was that the use of new models and approaches, including single-cell-omics, novel mouse models, and 3D culture systems, is revealing dynamic properties and interactions of senescent and immune cell fates. This knowledge is critical for devising new therapeutic approaches with important translational relevance.

Individual and Institutional Factors Contribute to Research Capacity Building for Early-Stage Investigators from Groups Underrepresented in Biomedical Research: A Qualitative Comparative Analysis.

Enhancement of diversity within the U.S. research workforce is a recognized need and priority at a national level. Existing comprehensive programs, such as the National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) and Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI), have the dual focus of building institutional research capacity and promoting investigator self-efficacy through mentoring and training. A qualitative comparative analysis was used to identify the combination of factors that explain the success and failure to submit a grant proposal by investigators underrepresented in biomedical research from the RCMI and non-RCMI institutions. The records of 211 participants enrolled in the NRMN Strategic Empowerment Tailored for Health Equity Investigators (NRMN-SETH) program were reviewed, and data for 79 early-stage, underrepresented faculty investigators from RCMI (n = 23) and non-RCMI (n = 56) institutions were included. Institutional membership (RCMI vs. non-RCMI) was used as a possible predictive factor and emerged as a contributing factor for all of the analyses. Access to local mentors was predictive of a successful grant submission for RCMI investigators, while underrepresented investigators at non-RCMI institutions who succeeded with submitting grants still lacked access to local mentors. Institutional contexts contribute to the grant writing experiences of investigators underrepresented in biomedical research.

136 Evaluating the ten-year progression of the Miami CTSI Mentored Translational Research Scholars (KL2) Program Awards

OBJECTIVES/GOALS: The goal of Miami CTSI’s Mentored Translational Research Scholars (KL2) Program is to identify outstanding early-stage investigators and prepare them to become the next generation of highly skilled independent researchers who translate fundamental knowledge and new technologies from the laboratory to the clinic and to the community. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Evaluation of the KL2 program focused on assessing progress in the following areas: 1) scholar productivity during and after graduating from the program; 2) continued engagement of KL2 program graduates in clinical and translational research; scholar productivity during and after graduating from the program; 3) outcomes such as establishing independent research careers, obtaining research funding, and establishing collaborations; and 4) research impact. We used a developmental evaluation approach and benefits-framework model to conduct program evaluation, incorporating both in a program-specific logic model. Bi-annual surveys were used to measure scholar feedback and progress, and utilization of CTSI services. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: Since 2013, the KL2 program has trained 21 scholars,17 of whom have completed training, and four are still in the program. Of the 21 scholars, 52% are female and 38% are underrepresented minorities (URM)–significantly higher than the 12% URM for overall CTSA KL2 scholars. Scholars have 176 total publications related to their KL2 projects and have received $52.4m in total research funding. In addition, 50% of the projects focused on health disparities. Overall, 48% of KL2 scholars have received large subsequent federal awards including three NIH K awards and six NIH R awards. Scholars actively utilized CTSI services during and after graduation. Programmatic enhancements such as adding institutional scholars and using scholar feedback to improve program resources were also implemented. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE: Miami CTSI’s KL2 program has demonstrated success in fulfilling its program goals. The process and outcome evaluation has provided a better understanding of program performance and progress and has demonstrated alignment with CTSI’s overall goals on addressing health disparities and its commitment to diversity and equity.

Building a new regional home for implementation science: Annual Midwest Clinical & Translational Research Meetings.

The vision of the Central Society for Clinical and Translational Research (CSCTR) is to "promote a vibrant, supportive community of multidisciplinary, clinical, and translational medical research to benefit humanity." Together with the Midwestern Section of the American Federation for Medical Research, CSCTR hosts an Annual Midwest Clinical & Translational Research Meeting, a regional multispecialty meeting that provides the opportunity for trainees and early-stage investigators to present their research to leaders in their fields. There is an increasing national and global interest in implementation science (IS), the systematic study of activities (or strategies) to facilitate the successful uptake of evidence-based health interventions in clinical and community settings. Given the growing importance of this field and its relevance to the goals of the CSCTR, in 2022, the Midwest Clinical & Translational Research Meeting incorporated new initiatives and sessions in IS. In this report, we describe the role of IS in the translational research spectrum, provide a summary of sessions from the 2022 Midwest Clinical & Translational Research Meeting, and highlight initiatives to complement national efforts to build capacity for IS through the annual meetings.

Health Disparities Investigator Development through a Team-Science Pilot Projects Program.

Profound health disparities are widespread among Native Hawaiians, other Pacific Islanders, and Filipinos in Hawai'i. Efforts to reduce and eliminate health disparities are limited by a shortage of investigators trained in addressing the genetic, socio economic, and environmental factors that contribute to disparities. In this conference proceedings report from the 2022 RCMI Consortium National Conference, we describe our mentoring program, with an emphasis on community-engaged research. Elements include our encouragement of a team-science, customized Pilot Projects Program (PPP), a Mentoring Bootcamp, and a mentoring support network. During 2017-2022, we received 102 PPP preproposals. Of these, 45 (48%) were invited to submit full proposals, and 22 (19%) were awarded (8 basic biomedical, 7 clinical, 7 behavioral). Eighty-three percent of awards were made to early-career faculty (31% ethnic minority, 72% women). These 22 awards generated 77 related publications; 84 new grants were submitted, of which 31 were awarded with a resultant return on investment of 5.9. From 5 to 11 investigators were supported by PPP awards each year. A robust usage of core services was observed. Our descriptive report (as part of a scientific conference session on RCMI specialized centers) focuses on a mentoring vehicle and shows how it can support early-stage investigators in pursuing careers in health disparities research.
