Shifting Priorities: A Look at a Course Adopted Text (CATs) e-Book Program and How Its Success Realigned One Library’s e-Book Collection Priorities

Like many academic librarians, St. Norbert College collection librarians have been trying to find the right configuration of e-book acquisition strategies to meet our users’ needs. Since 2017, St. Norbert’s strategy had been a combination of a subscription to a large vendor package, multiple evidence-based acquisition (EBA) programs, and one-time orders of e-books purchased as a part of faculty departmental requests. In Fall 2018, St. Norbert Library started a partnership with the campus bookstore, began receiving the list of course adopted texts (CATs), and launched a new and parallel e-book strategy of purchasing unlimited access e-books for CATs. This study provides data on the reach and growth of St. Norbert Library’s CATs e-books program, including the number of courses and types of courses affected by library supplied CATs e-books, and the types and publishers of library supplied CATs. As the CATs program grew so did the costs to support it and St. Norbert determined to investigate the usage of the CATs e-books compared to its concurrently licensed EBA content and evaluate the compatibility and sustainability of its CATs and EBA programs. Discussions detail why St. Norbert came to value CATs e-books over EBA e-books, how, despite the potential for symbiosis, St. Nobert’s determined its EBAs to be incompatible with its CATs program, and why the St. Norbert Library decided not to continue both the EBA and the CATs programs. Conclusions discuss CATs e-book successes and how developing, sustaining, and continuing to evolve the CATs e-book program has been integral to St. Norbert Library’s collection moving in new strategic directions.

If Time and Money Matters: EBook Program Challenges in Tallinn University of Technology Library

ABSTRACT The subject of electronic book (eBook) acquisition and cataloging time and cost management are an unexplored field in Estonia, and based on the information known to the author, there are no similar studies using a “time-driven activity-based costing” (TDABC) methodology for analyzing costs of activities related to eBooks. The purpose of this paper is not to compare the advantages and disadvantages of eBooks. The purpose of the current paper is to verify, by using the Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing method, that the process of purchasing and cataloging eBooks is significantly cheaper, less time-consuming, and ultimately more cost-effective than the process of purchasing and cataloging printed books (pBooks); and to determine whether eBooks streamline the acquisition and cataloging process for books. The results of this study were compared with the results of a previous study on the acquisition and cataloging of print books (pBooks) that was conducted at Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) Library in 2012–2013.Methodology.The data used in this paper are based on a review of relevant literature in order to survey the different problems and challenges in the library sector that slow down the success of the eBook management process. Through a case study conducted at TalTech Library, a time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC) method was used, such that all activities related to acquisition and cataloging of individually purchased eBooks were identified, recorded in detail and analyzed. More specifically, the study concerned eBooks offered in the Ebook Central platform and covered acquisition processes (such as receipt of purchase requests, communication with patrons, making a purchase, and feedback to the patron).Findings. On the basis of the current study it can be said that the activities related with eBooks take remarkably less staff time and finances than pBooks. The efficiency of staff increases due to electronic retrieval, processing, and delivery of collections. This study led to an understanding that many activities between different units or departments, especially in a large library, actually duplicate each other, and work could be organized in a more effective way if duplication is avoided, which in turn saves time and money. The results of this study suggest that some acquisition of eBooks can eliminate duplication of effort in both the acquisition and cataloging processes.

Inovasi Pelayanan Dinas Perpustakaan dan Kearsipan Kota Metro Melalui Program Ebook dalam Upaya Menumbuhkan Minat Baca Remaja

Reading interest in Indonesia is still relatively low because the number of books in circulation is uneven, and most books are circulated only in big cities. To overcome this, the Metro City Regional Library and Archives Office are in accordance with its vision and mission in utilizing information technology, namely by creating innovations that make libraries attractive through the ebook program. This program is a service innovation provided by the Metro City Regional Library and Archives Service, namely a library based on digital applications that can easily find and read books coming to the library. This study seeks to determine service innovation's application to the Metro City Library and Archives Service through the ebook program and the supporting and inhibiting factors in implementing the ebook program innovation in the Metro City Library and Archives Service. This research is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. This study indicates that the ebook program innovation carried out by the Metro City Library and Archives Office is quite useful in its application. This can be seen from the fulfillment of four of the six indicators of innovation typology: new or improved services, administrative innovation, system innovation, and radical change. Some things of concern are the innovation carried out still shows conceptual weaknesses because the Metro City Library and Archives Service still carries a Type B library and in the process of making application systems require a long time and maintenance of application systems that must be done regularly by human resources who are competent in their field.

Feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of an online training and support program for caregivers of people with dementia in India: a randomized controlled trial.

Internet-based interventions involving elements of cognitive behavior therapy, psychoeducation, relaxation and skills training for caregivers of people with dementia have been found to be promising in Western countries. Given these outcomes, the adapted version of a multi-component online caregiver skills training and support program of the World Health Organization, called iSupport, was tested for feasibility and preliminary effectiveness in India. One hundred fifty-one caregivers of family members with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or dementia were randomized to either the intervention arm (iSupport; n=74) or to the control group (an education-only e-book program; n=77). Participants were assessed using self-rated measures of depression and perceived burden, which were the primary outcome measures, at baseline and 3-month follow-up. Person-centered attitude, self-efficacy, mastery and self-rated health were also assessed. Fifty-five caregivers (29 in the iSupport group and 26 in the control condition) completed the study. The recruitment and retention rate of the study were 44.67% and 36.42% respectively. No significant differences were found between the two groups at 3-month follow-up on the primary outcomes. Among the secondary outcomes, significant improvement was only seen in caregivers' person-centered attitude towards persons with dementia in the iSupport group (t=2.228; p<0.05). Despite efforts to recruit and retain participants to the online program, this study had a low recruitment and retention rate, which require closer attention and indicates a need for further adaptations of the Indian version of the iSupport program to improve its acceptability and accessibility. The lessons learned from this study will guide the further development of caregiver training and support interventions in India. The trial was registered with the Clinical Trials Registry-India (Trial Registration No. CTRI/2017/02/007876).

An ebook program by any other name: A comparison of Ebrary PDA and YBP DDA Ebook purchasing at the University of Mississippi Libraries

ABSTRACTIn 2013, the University of Mississippi Libraries switched methods of purchasing demand-driven acquisitions (DDAs) for ebooks. The libraries moved from a method mediated by ebook vendor Ebrary to one mediated by book jobber YBP. Afterward, there was a sharp decrease in the number of ebook titles purchased after 2013 as compared with the previous method used in 2010–2013. This article examines purchased titles to determine why this difference exists and comes to the conclusion that Ebrary's system had less ability to be mediated, resulting in a larger number of titles, while YBP offered many title mediation options that were eagerly used by librarians, reducing the number of texts available for DDA purchase.

Demand-Driven E-book Program in Tallinn University of Technology Library: The First Two Years of Experience with the EBL Platform

ABSTRACTThe ease and effectiveness of patron-driven (demand-driven) acquisitions has helped to optimize many academic libraries’ acquisitions budgets. Libraries are increasingly turning to e-books as an alternative to purchasing multiple copies. Academic libraries have for years been forced to purchase large packages of e-books that are of questionable financial value because so much of the content is not used. The number of content units downloaded from large e-book packages by university patrons is not growing. At the same time, the number of checkouts of print books is declining. Advantages of e-books over print are discussed. Also mentioned are a few drawbacks, particularly the fact that European Union countries impose a higher level of value-added tax (VAT) on them than on print books. The author presents a case study analyzing the first two years of experience with the Ebook Library (EBL) platform at the Tallinn University of Technology Library, giving an overview of the advantages and successful measures of demand-driven acquisition in the form of short-term loans.

THE REALIZATION OF E-BOOKS FOR TEACHING AS REFLECTED BY EFL TEACHERS OF ISLAMIC JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL (MTs)

This study was aimed at processing empirical data to know the realization e-book program in EFL teaching and learning process as reflected by English teachers of Islamic Junior High School (MTs) in Indonesia. It is a descriptive research of which the approach is a cross sectional survey. The result of this study was expected to be the basis for the government to re-evaluate the implementation of the national project of School Electronic Books (BSE). Based on the result of data analysis, the program of e-books should be revised as considering several factors affecting its insufficient use by the EFL teachers of MTs. The use of E-book in teaching and learning in Indonesia EFL classroom had been beyond the teachers’ outlook. It revealed that e-book and its advantages were not well recognized by many teachers of MTs in Indonesia because of lack awareness of rapid growth of technology and information in this case the use of internet.

Notes on Operations: A Scenario Analysis of Demand-Driven Acquisition (DDA) of E-Books in Libraries

Demand-Driven Acquisition (DDA) has been commonly adopted by academic libraries in the United States for acquiring e-books in recent years. Implementation of the e-book DDA model varies by library. This paper introduces and demonstrates a scenario analysis approach for libraries to evaluate, identify, and select a DDA plan that works best for them based on their DDA program data. This approach helps address some key questions facing libraries with a DDA e-book program: How may a DDA program be evaluated under different scenarios? Does a short-term loan (STL) option make sense? And, is the current DDA implementation a good fit for the library? The implications and related issues are discussed.

Home Grown Ebooks: North Carolina’s Collaborative Ebook Pilot Project

This article describes how NC LIVE, a large, statewide, multi-type library consortium piloted new models for funding and purchasing a shared ebook collection that concentrated on books published by local publishers. Although the pilot is still being evaluated, the consortium counts the project as a success in that 200 libraries statewide gained unlimited simultaneous user access to more than 1,200 titles not previously available in libraries. NC LIVE is now working with publishers and a platform provider to move the ebook pilot into its next phase as a full-fledged ebook program. The aim of this article is to describe the process used, major decision points, and the challenges and opportunities NC LIVE experienced throughout the development of its Home Grown Ebook Collection in hopes that others interested in similar models might benefit.

얼굴의 특이점 검출 및 실시간 추적을 이용한 e-Book 제어

This study is about e-Book program based on human-computer interaction(HCI) system for physically handicapped person. By acquiring background knowledge of HCI, we know that if we use vision-based interface we can replace current computer input devices by extracting any characteristic point and tracing it. We decided betweeneyes as a characteristic point by analyzing facial input image using webcam. But because of three-dimensional structure of glasses, the person who is wearing glasses wasn't suitable for tracing between-eyes. So we changed characteristic point to the bridge of the nose after detecting between-eyes. By using this technique, we could trace rotation of head in real-time regardless of glasses. To test this program's usefulness, we conducted an experiment to analyze the test result on actual application. Consequently, we got 96.5% rate of success for controlling e-Book under proper condition by analyzing the test result of 20 subjects.

Whether your library is starting to think about piloting a patron-driven acquisitions (PDA) program or is in the midst of a pilot or permanent program, you will profit from studying Suzanne Wards no-nonsense, comprehensive guide. This slender volume distills the information, both contextual and pragmatic, you will need in order to plan for, institute, assess, and manage print- and e-book-based programs. Academic libraries are in the spotlight throughout, but many of the principles will apply to other types of libraries, too. Ward is well qualified to author a practical guide to managing programs, as she helped edit Patron-Driven Acquisitions: Current Successes and Future Directions, while also contributing to the books introduction, literature review, and conclusion. (1) One other book-length treatment of the subject exists: Patron-Driven Acquisitions: History and Best Practices, edited by David Swords, a vice president at e-book aggregator EBL. Methodical sections on administering the program follow. They include not only the bigger-picture topics such as assessment, getting input from users, helping librarian selectors understand and buy into the program, managing cross-unit cooperation, and budgeting, but also more quotidian topics such as deciding who makes purchase decisions, who places orders, and at what point books are to be cataloged. PDA and E-books begins with an overview of the four most common types of e-book programs, and then offers a full guide for setting one up. Libraries with approval and slip plans will especially appreciate the paragraphs on the relationship between an e-book program and an established print book approval plan; likewise, ILL librarians will welcome the segment on how a program affects their work. PDA Consortium Style

In April 2010, the University of Colorado Boulder (CUB) Libraries implemented a patron-driven acquisitions (PDA) e-book program through Ingram Content Group’s on the MyiLibrary platform. CUB’s PDAprogram expanded to include all campuses within the University of Colorado (CU) system, launching a collaborative pilot project for shared purchasing and shared cataloging of e-books among five geographically separate and diverse CU libraries in December 2011. The PDA program affects the catalogs, cataloging departments, and cataloging workflows of each library. This paper describes the CU PDA program with a focus on how MARC records are prepared and distributed to the CU libraries, both before and after titles are purchased. It covers factors that impact editing and customization of the records such as the quality of vendor-supplied data, local needs, and best practices for Prospector, a regional unified catalog in which all CU system libraries participate. In addition, the authors share their strategies for detecting and correcting cataloging errors that occur and their methods for handling PDA titles duplicated in other e-book packages available at CU libraries.
