Dynamics of self-propelled particles in vibrated dense granular media.

We study a system consisting of a few self-propelled particles (SPPs) placed among a crowd of densely packed granular particles that are vertically vibrated in a two-dimensional circular confinement. Our experiments reveal two important findings. First, an SPP exhibits a fractal renewal process within the dense granular medium, which induces a superdiffusive behavior whose diffusion exponent increases with its aspect ratio. Second, the SPPs eventually reach the boundary and form a moving cluster, which transitions from the moving state to the static state as the number of SPPs is increased. These results suggest a simple and effective method of modulating the fluidity and directionality of granular systems via controlling the shape and the number of SPPs.

Sorting and Extraction of Self-Propelled Chiral Particles by Polarized Wall Currents.

The dynamics of self-propelled particles with curved trajectories is investigated. Two modes are observed, a bulk mode with a quasicircular motion and a surface mode with the particles following the walls. The surface mode is the only mode of ballistic transport and the particle current is polar and depends on the particles' chirality. We show that a robust sorting and extraction occurs when the particles explore a domain with two exit gates collecting selectively the particles circling left and right. With a counterslope, the extraction rate is found to increase while the sorting error is reduced.

Large-Scale Dynamics of Self-propelled Particles Moving Through Obstacles: Model Derivation and Pattern Formation

We model and study the patterns created through the interaction of collectively moving self-propelled particles (SPPs) and elastically tethered obstacles. Simulations of an individual-based model reveal at least three distinct large-scale patterns: travelling bands, trails and moving clusters. This motivates the derivation of a macroscopic partial differential equations model for the interactions between the self-propelled particles and the obstacles, for which we assume large tether stiffness. The result is a coupled system of nonlinear, non-local partial differential equations. Linear stability analysis shows that patterning is expected if the interactions are strong enough and allows for the predictions of pattern size from model parameters. The macroscopic equations reveal that the obstacle interactions induce short-ranged SPP aggregation, irrespective of whether obstacles and SPPs are attractive or repulsive.

Run-and-tumble dynamics of self-propelled particles in confinement

Run-and-tumble dynamics is a wide-spread mechanism of swimming bacteria. The accumulation of run-and-tumble microswimmers near impermeable surfaces is studied theoretically and numerically in the low-density limit in two and three spatial dimensions. Both uni-modal and exponential distributions of the run lengths are considered. Constant run lengths lead to peaks and depletions regions in the density distribution of particles near the surface, in contrast to exponentially distributed run lengths. Finally, we present a universal accumulation law for large channel widths, which applies not only to run-and-tumble swimmers, but also to many other kinds of self-propelled particles.

Dynamics of self-propelled particles under strong confinement.

We develop a statistical theory for the dynamics of non-aligning, non-interacting self-propelled particles confined in a convex box in two dimensions. We find that when the size of the box is small compared to the persistence length of a particle's trajectory (strong confinement), the steady-state density is zero in the bulk and proportional to the local curvature on the boundary. Conversely, the theory may be used to construct the box shape that yields any desired density distribution on the boundary, thus offering a general tool to understand and design such confinements. When the curvature variations are small, we also predict the distribution of orientations at the boundary and the exponential decay of pressure as a function of box size recently observed in simulations in a spherical box.
