Slow magnetic relaxation in rare μ2[sbnd]O-Bridged Holmium(III) and Erbium(III) chain compounds

Lanthanide chain compounds with slow relaxation of the magnetization (SRM) behavior have garnered wide attention due to their rich physical phenomena and wide applications. However, the study with non-Dy3+ ions are still rare, mainly due to the challenges in balancing single-ion magnetic anisotropy and intrachain exchange couplings. In this work, two new μ2O-bridged homospin chain compounds: [Ln(L)2(phen)(μ2OH)(μ2H2O)]n (Ln = Ho(1), Er(2), HL = 4-nitrobenzoic acid, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), were synthesized under solvothermal conditions and fully characterized. Both compounds exhibit weak but effective intrachain couplings transmitted by single-O bridges, leading to Ising-like chain behavior. Dynamic magnetic measurements within the temperature range revealing this special chain behavior indicate that both compounds also exhibit SRM behavior. Such results suggest they could be categorized to the family of single-chain magnets, which are rarely reported for lanthanide compounds with non-radical ligands and non-Dy3+ systems.

Self-Assembled Lanthanide Phosphinate Square Grids (Ln = Er, Dy, and Tb): Dy4 Shows SMM/SMT and Tb4 SMT Behavior.

Tetranuclear [2 × 2] square-grid-like LnIII clusters have been synthesized by reacting LnCl3·6H2O salts with bis[α-hydroxy(p-bromophenyl)methyl]phosphinic acid [R2PO2H, where R = CH(OH)PhBr] and pivalic acid. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies show the formation of [Me4N]2[Ln4(μ2-η1:η1-PO2R2)8(η2-CO2But)4(μ4-CO3)] [Ln = Er (1), Dy (2), and Tb (3)]. Direct-current studies reveal significant ferromagnetic interactions between DyIII in 2 and TbIII in 3 and an antiferromagnetic interaction between ErIII in 1. Dynamic magnetic susceptibility measurements confirm a single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior in both 0 and 1200 Oe applied magnetic fields for 2. Complexes 2 and 3 show single molecular toroic (SMT) behavior with a mixed magnetic moment.

Levamisole Based Co(II) Single-Ion Magnet.

A new Co(II) complex, [Co(NCS)2(L)2] (1) has been synthesized based on levamisole (L) as a new ligand. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses confirm that the Co(II) ion is having a distorted tetrahedral coordination geometry in the complex. Notably strong intramolecular S⋅⋅⋅S and S⋅⋅⋅N interactions has been confirmed by employing Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM). These intramolecular interactions occur among the sulfur and nitrogen atoms of the levamisole ligands and also the nitrogen atoms of the thiocyanate. Direct current (dc) magnetic analyses reveal presence of zero field splitting (ZFS) and large magnetic anisotropy on Co(II). Detailed ab initio ligand field theory calculations quantitatively predicted the magnitude of ZFS. Prominent field-induced single-ion magnet (SIM) behavior was observed for 1 from dynamic magnetization measurements. Slow magnetic relaxation follows an Orbach mechanism with the effective energy barrier Ueff=29.6 (7) K and relaxation time τo=1.4 (4)×10-9 s.

Crystal structure and cryomagnetic study of a mononuclear erbium(III) oxamate inclusion complex.

The synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of an oxamate-containing erbium(III) complex, namely, tetrabutylammonium aqua[N-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)oxamato]erbium(III)-dimethyl sulfoxide-water (1/3/1.5), (C16H36N)[Er(C11H12NO3)4(H2O)]·3C2H6OS·1.5H2O or n-Bu4N[Er(Htmpa)4(H2O)]·3DMSO·1.5H2O (1), are reported. The crystal structure of 1 reveals the occurrence of an erbium(III) ion, which is surrounded by four N-phenyl-substituted oxamate ligands and one water molecule in a nine-coordinated environment, together with one tetrabutylammonium cation acting as a counter-ion, and one water and three dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) molecules of crystallization. Variable-temperature static (dc) and dynamic (ac) magnetic measurements were carried out for this mononuclear complex, revealing that it behaves as a field-induced single-ion magnet (SIM) below 5.0 K.

The effect of the outer-sphere cations on the photophysical and magnetic properties of rare earth complexes with 2,2,2-trichloro-N-(diphenylphosphoryl)acetamide

Two series of rare earth coordination compounds have been synthesized (Na[RE(L4)] (labeled as 1RE) and PPh4[RE(L4)] (labeled as 2RE), where RE = Y3+, Eu3+, Tb3+, L = 2,2,2-trichloro-N-(diphenylphosphoryl)acetamide) to determine the possibility of modifying their photophysical and magnetical properties by changing the counterion. The crystal structure of 1RE was determined based on the single-crystal X-ray diffraction and the crystal structure of 2RE was determined based on quantum chemistry computational procedures. Characterization of the physicochemical properties of the compounds was carried out using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopy as well as FT-IR, absorption and luminescence spectroscopy in the temperature range of 300 - 77 K. The rate constants of radiative (Arad) and non-radiative (Anrad) transitions, intrinsic (QLnLn) and overall (QLnL) emission quantum yields, sensitization efficiency (ηsens), the experimental and theoretical intensity parameters (Ωλ), the forward (WS, WT) and backward (WbS, WbT) intramolecular energy transfer (IET) rates were determined. Magnetic properties of Tb3+ compounds were studied in a constant field of 0.5 T in the temperature range of 1.8–300 K. Dynamic AC magnetic susceptibility measurements were carried out as a function of temperature and frequency for 1Tb and 2Tb. Only in the case of 2Tb, in the presence of an external DC field, a slight temperature dependence of in-phase χ′ and out-of-phase χ'' susceptibility was recorded. Based on experimental and theoretical results, the significant effect of counterion on the photophysical and magnetic properties of RE chelates has been demonstrated and clarified, providing valuable guidance for the design of bifunctional electromagnetic radiation converters.

Field-Induced Slow Magnetization Relaxation of a Tetrahedral S=2 FeIIS4-Containing Complex.

In the work described herein, the spin relaxation properties of the mononuclear tetrahedral S = 2 [Fe{(SPiPr2)2N}2] complex (1) were studied by employing static and dynamic magnetic measurements al liquid helium temperatures. In the absence of an external direct current (DC) magnetic field, 1 exhibits fast magnetization relaxation. However, in the presence of external magnetic fields of a few kOe, slow relaxation is induced as monitored by alternating current (AC) magnetic susceptibility measurements up to 10 kHz, in the temperature range 2-5 K. Analysis of the temperature dependence of the corresponding relaxation time reveals contributions by Quantum Tunnelling of Magnetization, and the Direct and Orbach processes in the magnetization relaxation mechanism of 1. The energy barrier, Ueff, of the Orbach process, as determined by this analysis, is compared with that related to the zero field splitting parameters of 1 which were previously determined by high- frequency and -field electron paramagnetic resonance and Mössbauer spectroscopies.

Bimetallic Synergy Enables Silole Insertion into THF and the Synthesis of Erbium Single‐Molecule Magnets

AbstractThe potassium silole K2[SiC4‐2,5‐(SiMe3)2‐3,4‐Ph2] reacts with [M(η8‐COT)(THF)4][BPh4] (M=Er, Y; COT=cyclo‐octatetraenyl) in THF to give products that feature unprecedented insertion of the nucleophilic silicon centre into a carbon‐oxygen bond of THF. The structure of the major product, [(μ‐η8 : η8‐COT)M(μ‐L1)K]∞ (1M), consists of polymeric chains of sandwich complexes, where the spiro‐bicyclic silapyran ligand [C4H8OSiC4(SiMe3)2Ph2]2− (L1) coordinates to potassium via the oxygen. The minor product [(μ‐η8 : η8‐COT)M(μ‐L1)K(THF)]2 (2M) features coordination of the silapyran to the rare‐earth metal. In forming 1M and 2M, silole insertion into THF only occurs in the presence of potassium and the rare‐earth metal, highlighting the importance of bimetallic synergy. The lower nucleophilicity of germanium(II) leads to contrasting reactivity of the potassium germole K2[GeC4‐2,5‐(SiMe3)2‐3,4‐Me2] towards [M(η8‐COT)(THF)4][BPh4], with intact transfer of the germole occurring to give the coordination polymers [{η5‐GeC4(SiMe3)2Me2}M(η8‐COT)K]∞ (3M). Despite the differences in reactivity induced by the group 14 heteroatom, the single‐molecule magnet properties of 1Er, 2Er and 3Er are similar, with thermally activated relaxation occurring via the first‐excited Kramers doublet, subject to effective energy barriers of 122, 80 and 91 cm−1, respectively. Compound 1Er is also analysed by high‐frequency dynamic magnetic susceptibility measurements up to 106 Hz.

Low-temperature cluster spin glass transition in the single-domain NiCr2O4 nanoparticles

NiCr2O4 nanoparticles with average particle size ∼15 nm, a single-domain size maintains the bulk canted antiferromagnetic ground state, were synthesized by a microwave combustion method. The magnetic behavior was carefully investigated by static and dynamic magnetic susceptibility measurements. In addition to a spin-glass-like behavior below paramagnetic-ferrimagnetic transition at T C, the NiCr2O4 nanoparticles demonstrate a low-temperature cluster spin glass transition below the spin canting transition T S, which manifests itself as a magnetic anomaly peak around ∼12 K (at 100 Oe) in the zero-field cooled magnetization with a relatively stronger field dependence in a ‘de Almeida-Thouless’ line for spin glasses. The AC susceptibility analyses in different approaches demonstrate a larger relative peak temperature variation per frequency decade and a longer characteristic relaxation time in the order of 0.04 and 10−7 s, against 0.01 and 10−9 s for the high-temperature blocking, indicating the slow spin dynamics for the low-temperature cluster glassy phase. A field-temperature magnetic phase diagram is proposed for the single-domain NiCr2O4 nanoparticles.

How the spin state tunes the slow magnetic relaxation field dependence in spin crossover cobalt(II) complexes.

A novel family of cobalt(II) compounds with tridentate pyridine-2,6-diiminephenyl type ligands featuring electron-withdrawing substituents of general formula [Co(n-XPhPDI)2](ClO4)2·S [n-XPhPDI = 2,6-bis(N-n-halophenylformimidoyl)pyridine with n = 4 (1-3) and 3 (4); X = I (1), Br (2 and 4) and Cl (3); S = MeCN (1 and 2) and EtOAc (3)] has been synthesised and characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, electron paramagnetic resonance, and static (dc) and dynamic (ac) magnetic measurements combined with theoretical calculations. The structures of 1-4 consist of mononuclear bis(chelating) cobalt(II) complex cations, [CoII(n-XPhPDI)2]2+, perchlorate anions, and acetonitrile (1 and 2) or ethyl acetate (3) molecules of crystallisation. This unique series of mononuclear six-coordinate octahedral cobalt(II) complexes displays both thermally-induced low-spin (LS)/high-spin (HS) transition and field-induced slow magnetic relaxation in both LS and HS states. A complete LS ↔ HS transition occurs for 1 and 2, while it is incomplete for 4, one-third of the complexes being HS at low temperatures. In contrast, 3 remains HS in all the temperature range. 1 and 2 show dual spin relaxation dynamics under the presence of an applied dc magnetic field (Hdc), with the occurrence of faster- (FR) and slower-relaxing (SR) processes at lower (Hdc = 1.0 kOe) and higher fields (Hdc = 2.5 kOe), respectively. On the contrary, 3 and 4 exhibit only SR and FR relaxations, regardless of Hdc. Overall, the distinct field-dependence of the single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour along with this family of spin-crossover (SCO) cobalt(II)-n-XPhPDI complexes is dominated by Raman mechanisms and, occasionally, with additional temperature-independent Intra-Kramer [LS or HS (D > 0)] or Quantum Tunneling of Magnetisation mechanisms [HS (D < 0)] also contributing.

Slow magnetic relaxation behaviors and diamagnetic dilution studies of a carboxyl bridged dinuclear dysprosium(III) complex

By using a rigid bulky carboxylic ligand α-cyanocinnamic acid (CCA), a dinuclear dysprosium (III) complex [Dy2(CCA)6 (MeOH)4] (1) was synthesized. Single crystal X-ray crystallography reveals that the two eight-coordinate dysprosium ions are bridged by four deprotonated carboxyl groups, forming a centrosymmetric paddle-wheel-like structure. Dynamic magnetic property measurements indicate that complex 1 displays field-induced slow magnetic relaxation. The temperature-dependent relaxation times can be fitted using Orbach and Raman processes with parameters of n = 2.8 (2), C = 27 (8) s−1/Kn, τ0 = 5 (2) × 10−10 s and Ueff = 40 (3) cm−1. Magnetic studies on the diamagnetic YIII-diluted analogue [Dy0.206Y1.794(CCA)6 (MeOH)4] (2) reveal its slow magnetic relaxation behavior without external dc field and the antiferromagnetic coupling between the DyIII ions in 1. Fits on the obtained relaxation times of 2 lead to the parameters of n = 4.5 (3), C = 0.7 (2) s−1/Kn, τ0 = 2.8 (2) × 10−9 s and Ueff = 38 (2) cm−1. The results suggest that slow magnetic relaxation originates from the single-ion relaxation of DyIII ions. Moreover, the diamagnetic dilution can suppress other fast relaxation pathways at low temperature, on account of the elimination of magnetic coupling and dipolar interaction. Ab initio calculations were then performed on the single DyIII ion species {YDy} and indicate that the first excited Kramers doublets (KDs) lie at ca. 76 cm−1, which is slightly higher than the experimental Ueff value. The intramolecular magnetic interactions were also calculated and indicate a weak ferromagnetic dipole-diploe magnetic interaction and an antiferromagnetic exchange coupling.

Spontaneous exchange bias and magnetic characteristics in Ni50Mn35Sn10V5 Heusler alloy

The magnetic state transformations and exchange bias effect of Ni50Mn35Sn10V5 shape memory alloy have been studied systematically. Curie transformation and martensitic transformation of Ni50Mn35Sn10V5 alloy were observed close to room temperature. Static and dynamic magnetic measurements were performed to reveal two magnetic states of the martensitic phase, with superparamagnetic and superspin glass. In addition, two exchange bias effects were observed at low temperatures, which can be attributed to the interaction of antiferromagnetism with both ferromagnetism and superferromagnetism.

Single-Molecule Magnet Properties in 3d4f Heterobimetallic Iron and Dysprosium Complexes Involving Hydrazone Ligand.

The reaction between the ((E)-N'-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)pyrazine-2-carbohydrazide) (H2opch) ligand and the metallo-precursor [Dy(hfac)3]·2H2O led to the formation of an homometallic coordination complex with the formula [Dy2(hfac)3(H2O)(Hopch)2][Dy(hfac)4] (1). In presence of both [Dy(hfac)3] 2H2O and the Fe(II) salt, the heterobimetallic tetranuclear [FeDy3(hfac)8(H2O)2(opch)2] (2) was isolated, while the addition of the co-ligand 1,2-Bis(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene) hydrazine (H2bmh) led to the formation of two heterobimetallic tetranuclear complexes with the formula [Fe3Dy(hfac)6(opch)2(H2bmh)] C6H14 (3) C6H14 and [Fe2Dy2(hfac)7(opch)2(H2bmh)] 0.5C7H16 (4) 0.5C7H16. Single crystal X-ray diffraction and dc magnetic investigation demonstrated that 3 and 4 involved the iron center in the +II and +III oxidation states. Dynamic magnetic measurements highlighted the single-molecule magnet behavior of 1 and 2 in a zero applied dc field primarily due to the ferromagnetic interactions taking place in these compounds.

A novel fusion denoising algorithm of spectral subtraction and Wiener filtering for MEMS magnetic signal in PDR positioning

PDR positioning is currently the core issue of autonomous positioning, there is a problem of high noise and interference in dynamic measurement using PDR (Pedestrian Dead Reckoning) MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) device, which is often a low precision multi-source integration sensor. Two new models of improved spectral subtraction (ISS) and PDRS (PDR-Spectral subtraction) spectral subtraction are constructed in this paper according to the spectrum features of the periodic noise generated from personnel stepping in PDR positioning. It is proposed a two-stage noise reduction method of spectrum subtraction-Wiener filtering for obtaining the static magnetic sequence of personnel path and reducing the real-time noise in PDR positioning, which main mechanism is to use the step power spectrum as the background noise for primary noise reduction, secondary Wiener filtering noise reduction according to the correlation between the denoised signal and the reference signal. A self-made MEMS-based positioning device HBEQ-1 and a high-precision magnetometer FVM-400 were used to collect dynamic and static magnetic value from the test area, and a spectral subtraction-Wiener two-stage noise reduction test was carried out. The experimental results show that the improved ISS spectral subtraction and PDRS spectral subtraction are effective in denoising the dynamic magnetic measurement, but there is still a certain deviation between the peak value and the amplitude of the denoised signal. After secondary noise reduction by Wiener filtering, the signal morphology similarity of magnetic curve and the reference reached 0.7975, and the matched path values of the dynamic magnetic value reached around 12000–13000. It showed that the denoising effect is good and the waveform of denoised signal and the reference signal is similar, but there is spatial stretching of the overall magnetic sequence. It is shown that the spectral subtraction-Wiener noise reduction method cannot eliminate the inertial delay bias generated by personnel walking, the processing does not distort the magnetic signal, maintains spatial characteristics of the static magnetic sequence of personnel path, which is an excellent model for noise reduction of dynamic magnetic measurements in PDR positioning.

Dynamic Compensation of a Fluxgate Magnetometer Based on a Hybrid Optimizing Algorithm

Under dynamic conditions, when the measured magnetic field is projected onto the sensitive axis of the fluxgate magnetometer, it will show strong dynamic characteristics, resulting in errors or delayed interpretation of the measured physical process. Considering the dynamic characteristics of the three-axis fluxgate magnetometer, this paper proposes a series dynamic compensator based on system identification to carry out system identification and modeling of the dynamic characteristics of the three-axis fluxgate magnetometer and proposes a system parameter calculating method based on hybrid optimization of the genetic algorithm and the simulated annealing algorithm (GA-SA). With these methods, not only can the parameter optimization process effectively avoid falling into the local optimal, but they can also greatly improve the search efficiency and shorten the time of solving the optimal solution. Thus, the full-space search ability of the algorithm is improved, and the accuracy of the dynamic magnetic measurements is improved to the maximum extent. The simulation results of the step signal show that the response time is reduced to 18.22% of the pre-compensation time. The standard signal test results of the step signal and sinusoidal signal, respectively, show that the response time of the step signal is reduced to 5.5% and, in the 0.01–10 Hz frequency band, the maximum attenuation decreases from 0.24% to 0.10%, and the phase difference is less than −0.5°. Moreover, the experimental results of the geomagnetic dynamic measurements show that the dynamic compensated data are mostly close to the real geomagnetic field values. In addition, the standard deviation errors are reduced from 95.30/277.35/108.51 nT to 3.41/2.36/2.75 nT in three geomagnetic vector components. The results of this work show the ability of dynamic measurement accuracy improvement of fluxgate magnetometers and are useful for geomagnetic dynamic measurement and related applications.

Multi-Technique Experimental Benchmarking of the Local Magnetic Anisotropy of a Cobalt(II) Single-Ion Magnet.

A comprehensive understanding of the ligand field and its influence on the degeneracy and population of d-orbitals in a specific coordination environment are crucial for the rational design and enhancement of magnetic anisotropy of single-ion magnets (SIMs). Herein, we report the synthesis and comprehensive magnetic characterization of a highly anisotropic CoII SIM, [L2Co](TBA)2 (L is an N,N'-chelating oxanilido ligand), that is stable under ambient conditions. Dynamic magnetization measurements show that this SIM exhibits a large energy barrier to spin reversal U eff > 300 K and magnetic blocking up to 3.5 K, and the property is retained in a frozen solution. Low-temperature single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction used to determine the experimental electron density gave access to Co d-orbital populations and a derived U eff, 261 cm-1, when the coupling between the d x 2-y 2 and dxy orbitals is taken into account, in very good agreement with ab initio calculations and superconducting quantum interference device results. Powder and single-crystal polarized neutron diffraction (PNPD, PND) have been used to quantify the magnetic anisotropy via the atomic susceptibility tensor, revealing that the easy axis of magnetization is pointing along the N-Co-N' bisectors of the N,N'-chelating ligands (3.4° offset), close to the molecular axis, in good agreement with complete active space self-consistent field/N-electron valence perturbation theory to second order ab initio calculations. This study provides benchmarking for two methods, PNPD and single-crystal PND, on the same 3d SIM, and key benchmarking for current theoretical methods to determine local magnetic anisotropy parameters.

Inelastic Neutron Scattering Measurement of the Ground State Tunneling Gap in Tb and Ho Analogues of a Dy Field-Induced Single-Molecule Magnet.

Recent advances in single-molecule magnet (SMM) research have placed great value on interpretation of inelastic neutron scattering (INS) data for rare earth (RE)-containing SMMs. Here, we present the synthesis of several rare earth complexes where combined magnetic and INS studies have been performed, supported by ab initio calculations. The reaction of rare earth nitrate salts with 2,2'-bipyridine (2,2'-bpy) and tetrahalocatecholate (X4Cat2-, X = Br, Cl) ligands in methanol (MeOH) afforded two new families of compounds [RE(2,2'-bpy)2(X4Cat)(X4CatH)(MeOH)] (X = Br and RE = Y, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Yb for 1-RE; X = Cl and RE = Y, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Yb for 2-RE). Addition of triethylamine (Et3N) to the reaction mixture delivered Et3NH[RE(2,2'-bpy)2(Br4Cat)2] (3-RE, RE = Er and Yb). Interestingly, cerium behaves differently to the rest of the series, generating (2,2'-bpyH)2[Ce(Br4Cat)3(2,2'-bpy)] (4-Ce) with tetravalent Ce(IV) in contrast to the trivalent metal ions in 1-3. The static magnetic properties of 1-RE (RE = Gd, Tb, Dy and Ho) were investigated in conjunction with INS measurements on 1-Y, 1-Tb, and 1-Ho to probe their ground state properties and any crystal field excitations. To facilitate interpretation of the INS spectra and provide insight into the magnetic behavior, ab initio calculations were performed using the single-crystal X-ray diffraction structural data of 1-RE (RE = Tb, Dy and Ho). The ab initio calculations indicate ground doublets dominated by the maximal angular momentum projection states of Kramers type for 1-Dy and Ising type for 1-Tb and 1-Ho. Dynamic magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that 1-Dy exhibits slow magnetic relaxation in the presence of a small applied magnetic field mainly through Raman pathways. Inelastic neutron scattering spectra exhibit distinct transitions corresponding to crystal field-induced tunneling gaps between the pseudo-doublet ground state components for 1-Tb and 1-Ho, which is one of the first direct experimental measurements with INS of such tunneling transitions in a molecular nanomagnet. The power of high-resolution INS is demonstrated with evidence of two distinct tunneling gaps measurable for the two crystallographically unique Tb coordination environments observed in the single crystal X-ray structure.

α-AsW9O33]9- bridged hexagonal clusters of Ln(III) showing field induced SMM behavior: experimental and theoretical insight.

Polyoxometalates (POM), as inorganic polydentate oxygen donors, provide binding opportunities for oxophilic lanthanide metal centers to construct novel Ln-substituted POM materials with exciting structures and attractive properties. Herein, we have reported four arsenotungstate [α-AsW9O33]9- based lanthanide-containing polyoxometalates [CsxK36-x{Ln6(H2O)12(α-AsW9O33)6}]·yH2O (Ln = Er (1), Gd (2), Ho (3), and Tb (4)), which are synthesized in an alkaline medium. Complexes 1-3 are the dimeric structures of [Ln3(H2O)6(α-AsW9O33)3]18- polyanions, whereas complex 4 is a hexamer of the polyanion [Tb (H2O)2(α-AsW9O33)]6- as a building unit. In all the complexes, [α-AsW9O33]9- units are staggered up and down and give rise to the chair conformation, where one [α-AsW9O33]9- unit bridges two Ln(III) centers through four μ2-oxygen and two terminal oxygen atoms, resulting in the hexagonal arrangement of lanthanides. The dynamic magnetic measurement indicates that only complex 1 exhibits slow relaxation of magnetization with an applied dc field (1500 Oe). To gain insight into the slow relaxation of magnetization in complex 1, the ligand-field parameters and the splitting of the ground-state multiplet of the Er(III) ions have been estimated. The ab initio calculation results confirm that the ground state wave function of these molecules (1, 3, and 4) is mainly composed of a mixture of mJ states, and the non-axial crystal field (CF) terms are more predominant than the axial CF term. The solid-state fluorescence spectra of 1-4 reveal that the photoexcitation O → M ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) of arsenotungstate fragments is effectively quenched due to the spatial coordination environment around the Ln(III) ion.

Antiferromagnetic ordering to cluster-glass like transition behavior in DyVO[formula omitted

We herein present the detailed investigation of the structural and magnetic properties of the Jahn–Teller compound DyVO4 in otherwise reported as antiferromagnetic compound. The static and dynamic magnetic measurements reveal the emergence of cluster-glass like phase in DyVO4. The magnetization vs temperature measurement in field-cooling and zero-field-cooling shows irreversibility above Néel temperature as increasing the field above 1000 Oe, indicating the glass-like behavior in DyVO4. The frequency dependence of ac-susceptibility is analyzed by calculating the Mydosh parameter, which confirms the cluster-glass phase in DyVO4 at applied dc magnetic fields. The frequency dependence ac-susceptibility is also analyzed within the framework of dynamic scaling laws such as power law and Vogel–Fulcher law. The extracted parameters supports the fact that transitions are spin cluster-glass like. Further the memory effect establishes antiferromagnetic to spin cluster-glass like transition in DyVO4 conclusively.

Rapid microwave synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles in physiological serum

Abstract Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (SPIONs) are more and more used in biomedical applications such as therapy (treatment for certain cancers, hyperthermia), diagnostic (contrast agent for Magnetic Resonance Imaging) or both. For these applications, SPIONs must be stable in an aqueous solution, monodisperse, with a narrow size distribution and without aggregation. To obtain these nanoparticles, a microwave process is carried out in this study as an easy, fast and reproducible synthesis method. Currently, in the literature, most synthesis of SPIONs are in ultra-pure water or another solvent. To consider the use of SPIONs in biomedical applications, it is essential to ensure the preservation of the physico-chemical parameters of the nanoparticles in the physiological medium to validate a synthesis process. With this objective, this study reports a comparison between the SPIONs synthesis in ultra-pure water and the SPIONs direct synthesis in a physiological serum (containing NaCl). To complete this comparison, the dispersion of SPIONs in physiological serum after an elaboration in ultra-pure water is reported. Characterizations of these different SPIONs samples are carried out to determine the physico-chemical parameters and magnetic properties. SPIONs are characterized by Transmission Electronic Microscopy, Dynamic Light Scattering, X-Ray Diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and magnetic measurements. Finally, to check if SPIONs can be used as contrast agent for MRI, a relaxometry measurement is performed.
