Optimizing Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell (DSSC) Performance through Synergistic Natural Dye Combinations from <i>Beta vulgaris</i> L., <i>Curcuma longa</i> L., and <i>Pandanus amaryllifolius</i>

This study optimizes dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) performance using a combination of natural dye components extracted from Beta vulgaris L. (beetroot), Curcuma longa L. (turmeric), and Pandanus amaryllifolius (pandanus leaf). These plants were selected for their natural pigments—betacyanin, curcuminoids, and chlorophyll—which potentially act as DSSC sensitizers. Dyes were extracted via maceration with ethanol solvent (1:6 sample:solvent ratio) for 24 h. Filtrates were combined in various ratios to test DSSC performance. The optimal C4 dye combination, with a 2:1:1 ratio (betacyanin:curcumin:chlorophyll), demonstrated the best performance. The UV-vis analysis revealed complex interactions and synergistic effects among dye combinations, characterized by increased light absorption in the 400–700 nm range. Cyclic voltammetry analysis showed favorable energy band gap values, confirming the pigments' suitability for DSSC applications. FTIR analysis confirmed the stable coexistence of the three dyes without new bond formation. Photovoltaic performance testing showed the C4 three-dye combination achieved the highest energy conversion efficiency of 3.57%. These results demonstrate the potential of this dye combination to contribute to the development of sustainable and efficient solar energy conversion in DSSCs.

Synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon dot/ tin disulfide nanosheet composite electro-catalysts for dye-sensitized solar cells.

Nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) and vertically-grown tin disulfide (SnS2) nanosheets are synthesized via hydrothermal method and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique, respectively. The SnS2 nanosheets are directly fabricated on flexible carbon cloth (CC), and then their basal planes are decorated with N-CDs. The as-prepared composite electrodes are used as the counter electrode for the application in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The characterizations of N-CDs and SnS2 nanosheets are studied by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), scanning electron microscopic (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), Raman spectrometer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) ect. Moreover, the cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and photocurrent-density voltage (J-V) are utilized to understand the electro-catalytic performance of N-CDs/SnS2/CC composite counter electrode. The N-CDs/SnS2/CC composite electrode shows higher cathodic reduction current density and lower charge transfer resistance in CV and EIS measurements, respectively, as compared to those of the electrodes with N-CDs or SnS2 alone. Meanwhile, the DSSC using N-CDs/SnS2/CC exhibits cell efficiency (η) of 7.68%, which is higher than those of cells having SnS2/CC (η=7.54%) and N-CDs/CC (η=5.66%) counter electrodes, repectively; it also reaches 94% cell efficiency of the cell using Pt/CC counter electrode (η=8.15%). The design concept of the modification of the basal planes by defect-rich carbon dots (i.e., N-CDs) and highly-exposed edge sites (i.e., vertically-grown SnS2 nanosheets) makes promising route to enhance the performance of two-dimensional electro-catalysts.

Layer-by-Layer Deposition of Hollow TiO2 Spheres with Enhanced Photoelectric Conversion Efficiency for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell Applications.

Fabricating photoanodes with a strong light-scattering effect can improve the photoconversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). In this work, a facile microwave hydrothermal process was developed to prepare Au@TiO2 core-shell nanostructures, and then the Au core was removed by etching, resulting in hollow TiO2. Morphological characterizations such as field emission scanning and transmission electron microscopy measurements have been used for the successful formation of core-shell and hollow TiO2 nanostructures. Next, we attempted to deposit the different-sized hollow TiO2-based microspheres simultaneously on the surface of small-sized TiO2 nanoparticles-based compact film as light-scattering layers via electrophoretic deposition. The deposited hollow TiO2 microspheres constitute bi- and tri-layers that not only improve the light-harvesting properties but also speed up the photogenerated charge transfer. Compared to commercial TiO2 compact film (4.75%), the resulting bi-layer and tri-layered films-based DSSCs displayed power conversion efficiencies of 6.33% and 8.08%, respectively. It is revealed that the deposited bi- and tri-layered films can enhance the light absorption ability via multiple photon reflection. This work validates a novel and controllable strategy to develop light-scattering layers with increased light-harvesting properties for highly efficient dye-sensitized solar cells.

Synthesis of CuCo2S4 nanosheets and its application in dye-sensitized solar cells

CuCo2S4, a ternary sulfide and an eco-friendly thiospinel that occurs naturally as a mineral named Carrollite, has been synthesized successfully in ambient conditions at low temperatures using ultrasonication. It has yet to be reported, but the nanosheet structure obtained from the ultrasonication synthesis method employed as a counter electrode in the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) has been demonstrated. The purity, crystallinity, morphology, and structure were explored thoroughly through the medium of XRD, SEM, TEM, SAED, and EDAX, and along with this, the presence of metal sulfide bond was investigated with the FT-IR and Raman spectra, which altogether confirmed the formation of CuCo2S4 nanosheet. The as-prepared nanosheets of CuCo2S4 have shown excellent homogeneity, as expected. Also, the presence of sulfur in the synthesized CuCo2S4, which is a highly polarizable atom and of a smaller size exhibiting a higher surface area, demonstrates higher electrocatalytic activity when fabricated as a counter-electrode in DSSCs by providing an incredible short circuit current density of 31.05 mA cm−2, open circuit potential of 735 mV with good fill factor value which altogether resulted in the power conversion efficiency of 10.21 % nearer to DSSC fabricated with Platinum counter electrode under the same conditions.

Ionic liquid (1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tricyanomethanide) incorporated corn starch polymer electrolyte for solar cell and supercapacitor application

Taking into account energy demand a new highly conducting ionic liquid (IL) c (EmImTCM) mixed corn starch (CS) biopolymer electrolyte is synthesized for dual electrochemical application electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) and the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) application. Electrical, structural, thermal, and optical studies are carried out in detail and presented in this communication. Maximum conducting IL-incorporated biopolymer electrolyte film has been sandwiched between electrodes to develop EDLC and DSSC. The sandwich-structured EDLC delivers a high specific capacitance of 250 F/gram while DSSC shows 1.44 % efficiency at one sun condition.

Enhancing solar cell efficiency: In-situ polymerization with Cu2O@CuO core-shell nanostars

Herein, Cu2O@CuO core-shell nanostars were prepared via a solution-processed method. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses confirmed that the Cu2O nanostars were consistently enclosed by a CuO layer. Dibromo (DB)-3,4-ethylenedioxythiphene (EDOT) monomer was prepared from commercially available 3,4-ethylenedioxythiphene via a common bromination method. The Cu2O@CuO core-shell nanostars were blended with the DBEDOT monomer and heated to 70 °C to form a nano-hybrid hole transport material (HTM) for application in solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (ssDSCs). The nanohybrid is systematically characterized through scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform spectroscopy. The photovoltaic performance of the ssDSCs was optimized by varying the Cu2O@CuO core-shell nanostars concentration in the nanohybrid HTM from 1 to 3 wt%, while maintaining the concentration of the DBEDOT monomer at 1wt%. In addition, the electrochemical properties of the nanohybrid HTM were explored through electrochemical impedance spectrometry measurements. Among the analyzed samples, the 1 wt% Cu2O@CuO core-shell nanostars in the nanohybrid HTM show the best efficiency. This method establishes the possibility of applying high-performance organic/inorganic-based nanohybrid HTMs in ssDSCs.

Optimization, imaging and LHE analysis of magnesium oxide nanoparticles synthesized with carambola extract as natural dye sensitizer

This work explores the enhancement of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) by using magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO NPs) that have been green-synthesized, with carambola extract acting as a natural dye sensitizer. Green synthesis minimizes the negative effects of traditional synthesis methods on the environment by providing a sustainable and ecologically friendly way to produce MgO NPs. To increase their effectiveness in DSSC applications, the synthesized nanoparticles underwent optimization. The morphology and size distribution of MgO NPs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which revealed spherical forms with a consistent size distribution. The crystalline nature of the MgO NPs was verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD), which revealed distinctive peaks that correspond to the bulk MgO crystal planes. A band gap of 3.5 eV, appropriate for UV region absorption, was found using UV–visible spectroscopy. FT-IR (Fourier-transform infrared) spectroscopy revealed information about their molecular compositions. Positive electronic characteristics, such as a negative total energy change (ΔE_T) and a high electrophilicity index (ω), which indicates effective charge transfer, were found through computational analysis. The light harvesting efficiency (LHE) value of 0.00459 signifies optimal light absorption capability by the dye molecule. The outcomes show that MgO NPs that have undergone green synthesis have the potential to be efficient and stable sensitizers for DSSCs. In addition to highlighting the significance of green synthesis techniques in nanomaterial research for renewable energy applications, this work advances the development of efficient and sustainable solar energy systems.

Flower-like SnS2/rGO composites with efficient iodide-triiodide redox performance for counter electrodes in Pt-free dye-sensitized solar cells

The work function (WF) of the counter electrode (CE) predominantly determines the device performance of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) as it controls the electron transfer rate for dye regeneration. Hence in this work, tin disulphide/reduced graphene oxide (SnS2/rGO) composites were synthesized with different wt.% of rGO (3, 5, 7, 10 %) and investigated their performance in DSSCs applications. At the outset, the formation of pristine SnS2 and SnS2/rGO composites were confirmed through X-ray diffraction and Raman spectral analysis. The morphological imaging revealed the micro flower-like structure of SnS2 with cross-sectional width of 5 ± 0.2 μm, and petal thickness ranges from 30.7 nm to 46.4 nm. The binding energy spectra confirms the 4+ oxidation state of Sn in both SnS2 and 7 wt% SnS2/rGO, suggesting that the rGO does not alter the chemical states of SnS2. Further, the peak-to-peak separation values obtained from Cylic-Voltammetry analysis were found to be 0.37 and 0.57 V for S7 and Pt CE respectively, indicating the rapid electrolyte reduction of 7 wt% SnS2/rGO. Finally, a photo conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.3 % has been achieved with 7 wt% SnS2/rGO CE which is greater than that of the PCE with Pt CE (6.5 %) and also higher than that of pristine SnS2 with 4.7 %. The improved PCE is attributed to the reduced WF of the 7 wt% SnS2/rGO composite as measured from the Kelvin probe force microscopy analysis, enabling the rapid redox reaction towards triiodide reduction.

Performance of yellow and pink oyster mushroom dyes in dye sensitized solar cell

A solar photovoltaic (PV) cell, is an electrical device that uses the PV effect to convert light energy into electricity. The application of oyster mushroom dyes in dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC) is a novel strategy to substitute the costly chemical production process with easily extractable, environmentally acceptable dyes. Both dyes of yellow and pink oyster mushrooms were extracted using the same process but dried into powder form using two techniques, warm drying and freeze drying. The characterization was carried out utilizing current-voltage (I-V) characterization for electrical properties, Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer for optical properties, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) for the structural properties. It was found that freeze-dried pink and yellow oyster mushroom had shown the good properties for DSSC application as it produced energy bandgap which lies within the range of efficient dye sensitizer; 1.7 eV and 2.2 eV, the most uniform distribution of pores and a nearly spherical form in FESEM analysis, and AFM result obtained with the highest root mean square (RMS) roughness value (26.922 and 34.033) with stereoscopic morphologies. The data proved that mushroom dyes can be incorporated in DSSC with the optimization of drying method in the extraction process, dilution of dye and the layer of deposition on the glass substrate. The current density-voltage (J–V) characteristics of fabricated DSSC was characterized using Newport Oriel Sol3A solar simulator under AM 1.5 Sun condition (100 mW/cm2, 25 oC). From the result obtained by solar simulator, the fabricated FTO/TiO2/Pleurotus djamor dye/Pt indicated the Voc of 0.499 V and Jsc of 0.397 mA/cm2.

Novel unsymmetrical squaraine dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells: Synthesis, characterization, and comparative photovoltaic performance of USQI-NPh2Me2 and USQI-OMe

This study presents the synthesis, characterization, and photovoltaic performance of two novel unsymmetrical squaraine dyes, USQI-NPh2Me2 and USQI-OMe, engineered for application in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). These chromophores were functionalized with distinct electron-donating groups, di-p-tolylamine for USQI-NPh2Me2 and methoxy for USQI-OMe. Their molecular structures were confirmed through FT-IR, 1HNMR, 13C NMR, and mass spectrometry. Comprehensive photophysical and electrochemical studies were conducted to fine-tune the HOMO and LUMO energy levels of both dyes, optimizing charge injection into the TiO2 conduction band and facilitating dye regeneration with the iodolyte (I₃⁻/I⁻) redox mediator. USQI-NPh2Me2 exhibited a strong absorption maximum at 661 nm, achieving a high short-circuit current density (JSC) of 13.17 mA/cm2, an open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.71V, and an overall efficiency of 7.01 %. USQI-OMe, with its absorption peak at 651 nm, reached a JSC of 11.88 mA/cm2, a higher VOC of 0.72 V, but a slightly lower overall efficiency of 6.41 %. Both dyes demonstrated reduced aggregation on the TiO2 surface, contributing to enhanced DSSCs performance. A Comparative analysis revealed that USQI-NPh2Me2 exhibits higher efficiency, while USQI-OMe provided a greater voltage output, highlighting the influence of electron-donating groups on photovoltaic properties. These findings provide valuable insights into structure-property relationships in unsymmetrical squaraine dyes, paving the way for future DSSCs chromophore design and optimization.

2-Axis controlled spray pyrolysis deposition device for Dye-sensitized Solar Cell (DSSC)

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are a promising alternative to traditional silicon-based photovoltaic systems due to their efficient light-to-electricity conversion. A critical component of DSSCs is titanium dioxide (TiO2), responsible for converting light into electrical energy. Spray pyrolysis was one of the methods for fabricating TiO2 thin films. However, there are several drawbacks, such as challenges in particle size control, maintaining homogeneity of the thin film, and scalability issues during the deposition process. Modifications to the manufacturing process are necessary to achieve optimal performance in DSSCs, particularly with the thickness of the cell. This work focuses on the 2-axis spray pyrolysis process, a cost-effective way to create thin and thick films. In particular, it focuses on TiO2 thin films utilized as working electrodes in DSSC applications. The method was performed at different motor speeds, namely MS80, MS100, and MS120. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectrum showed that the dominance of the anatase phase appeared in an MS100. The UV-Vis results depict that the band gap value is 3.02 eV. The surface profiler analysis indicates that sample MS100 has an optimal thickness of 15.17 µm. The DSSC achieved 9.4% efficiency with sample MS100. This finding demonstrates that using 2-axis controlled spray pyrolysis deposition improves DSSC performance with an optimal motor speed.

Fabrication of dye-sensitized solar cells with natural dye pigments derived from mustard green (Brassica juncea L) and turmeric (Curcuma longa L)

Abstract Natural dye molecules are good alternatives for the ruthenium-based sensitizer for use in dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) application. In this research, we have reported the potential application of natural pigment extracts as a dye-sensitizer in DSSC. Natural dyes were extracted using simple maceration technique from natural sources such as mustard green (Brassica juncea L) and turmeric (Curcuma longa L). UV-Vis and FT-IR characterization were employed to examined the optical characteristics and identify their functional groups of the dyes, respectively. The UV-Vis characterization of mustard green dye and turmeric dye show a wide absorption in visible region. The FT-IR spectrum of mustard green dye and turmeric dye show the presence the anchoring groups. The DSSC’s performance was studied using current-voltage (I-V) measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It was observed that the DSSC with turmeric dye shows better photovoltaic performance than DSSC with mustard green dye correlated to its longer charge carrier lifetime.

Natural photosensitizer extraction from Delonix regia flowers for future photosensor for DSSCs applications

This study explores the utilization of Delonix regia (DR) (Gulmohar flower) as a natural photosensitizer in the fabrication of self-powered photosensors via dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Various photoanodes, including ZnO, ZnO/TiO2, and ZnO/TiO2/Nb2O5, were investigated for their performance enhancement in DR-based photosensors. The photoanodes were fabricated using different deposition methods sensitized with DR photosensitizer and characterized through X-ray diffraction analysis, Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), UV–visible, Fluorescence spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The absorbance spectrum results indicate improved photosensitizer adsorption in visible light for the ZnO/TiO2/Nb2O5/DR photoanode compared to other configurations. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) cross-section image of ZnO/TiO2/Nb2O5 confirmed the formation of a multilayer photoanode. Chronoamperometry experiments were conducted to evaluate the photo sensing behavior, focusing on sensitivity, photoresponsivity, specific detectivity, and quantum efficiency within the solar spectrum range. Among the devices, ZnO/TiO2/Nb2O5 exhibited the highest photoresponsivity (1.2 × 10 −3 A/W) and photodetectivity (26.78 × 104 Jones), demonstrating promising advancements in DR-sensitized photosensors. This research highlights the exceptional performance of DR-sensitized photoanodes, particularly ZnO/TiO2/Nb2O5, in advancing the capabilities of photo-sensing devices. The investigated configuration exhibited a rapid response speed of 723 ms and a remarkable sensitivity of 89.87% in detecting photo signals. These findings emphasize the potential of DR photosensitizers to enhance photo-sensing activities, with significant implications for diverse applications in photodetection. By leveraging the unique properties of DR, particularly its incorporation into ZnO/TiO2/Nb2O5, this study underscores the promising prospects for developing efficient self-powered photosensors. The insights gleaned from this work pave the way for further exploration and optimization in organic photosensors.

Application of in-situ synthesized gelidium-like core-shell structure FeCo2S4@NiCo2S4/carbon paper composite on titanium mesh in counter electrode of liquid thin film solar cells

Design inexpensive and stable counter electrodes materials is great essential for accelerating the industrial application of dye-sensitized solar cells. Herein, transition metal sulfides FeCo2S4 and NiCo2S4 were in-situ synthesized into composite with core–shell structure on surface of carbon paper by hydrothermal method, and is used as CEs material of DSSCs. Besides, titanium mesh with lower resistivity is also used as a conductive base to prepare the CEs and reduce the series resistance of DSSCs. Therefore, after electrochemical analysis and photoelectric performance test, it is found that the photoelectric conversion efficiency of the DSSCs assembled with composite material CEs can be as high as 10.08 % (with the Jsc is 19.59 mA·cm−2, Voc is 0.796 V, FF is 0.65), which much higher than traditional Pt CEs (7.99 %) and other corresponding counterparts, indicating that the core–shell structure is more conducive to improving the catalytic activity of the material.

Pyrazine-Based Aromatic Dyes as Novel Photosensitizers with Improved Conduction Band and Photovoltaic Features: DFT Insights for Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional ability to convert solar energy into electricity at a relatively low cost. Novel organic photosensitizers (FZB1-FZB9) from the pyrazine-based aromatic dye (E)-3-(5-(2,3-bis(40-(diphenylamino)-[1,10-biphenyl]-4-yl)-7 (trifluoromethyl)quinoxalin-5-yl)thiophen-2-yl)-2-cyanoacrylic acid (TPPF) have been quantum chemically modeled for their application in dye-sensitized nanocrystalline TiO2 solar cells (DSSCs). The electrochemical and photovoltaic features of modeled dyes are investigated by performing DFT insights, i.e. FMOs, absorption maxima, DOS, TDM, NBO, exciton and binding energy, radiative lifetime analysis (ꚍ), electron-injection (Δ G inject ) and regeneration analysis ( Δ G dye regen )@TiO2. FMO analysis confirmed the better electron injection as HOMO of designed dyes was found to be more positive than redox potential I/I3 (-4.8 eV), and the LUMO appeared more negative than the conduction band of TiO2 (-4.0 eV). The modeled photosensitizers exhibited red shift λmax from 338-494 nm with a lower energy gap from 5.62 eV in FZB (R) to 5.17 eV in FZB9. Bridging modification reduces the exciton and binding energy for designed dye FZB9 and FZB7 compared to reference FZB. The designed dyes appeared with a lower radiative lifetime of up to 1.32 than the reference dye of 1.63, better light harvesting efficiency (LHE), and the highest NBO charge on bridges of designed photosensitizers for enhanced light emitting efficiency. The investigated dyes exhibited more negative values for electron injection, i.e. −0.003 and the highest values of dye regeneration ( Δ G regedye regen ) up to 11.717, which unveils innovative and effective injection of electrons toward semiconductor TiO2. Among all dyes, FZB8 proved best with the novel bridging modification that enables quick charge transfer as exhibited the lowest gap (5.17 eV), lowest excitation energy, better LHE, highest charge on LUMO and more negative electron injection (Δ G inject ) . The outcomes of this computational study confirmed that this research established a new benchmark for achieving novel and efficient photosensitizers, thus recommending them for future DSSC applications.

W-based carbide derived from PW12@ZIF-8 as Pt-free catalyst on counter electrode of dye-sensitized solar cells for triiodide reduction

The preparation of counter electrodes (CEs) catalysts at different pyrolysis temperatures will directly affect the composition, morphology, and performance of the catalysts in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) applications. Herein, four W-based carbides catalysts were derived from H3PW12O40-based ZIF-8 metal–organic frameworks (PW12@ZIF-8) by in-situ pyrolysis at 600, 700, 800, and 900 ℃ under N2 atmosphere. The pyrolysis mechanism and structure characteristics of the prepared W-based carbides with temperature variation were confirmed by TG-DTG-DSC simultaneous, XRD, XPS, TEM, SEM and N2 adsorption/desorption, which exhibits the gradual transformation of PW12@ZIF–8 → WC-C→WC→W1-xC→W2C. Furthermore, the photovoltaic performance of four different W-based carbides as CEs catalysts for regenerating I3−/I− shuttles in DSSCs were identified by photocurrent-voltage (J-V) measurement, which achieved PCEs of 4.63, 4.91, 5.05 and 5.78 %, respectively. As a result, W2C (900 ℃) provide more vacancies and defects on the catalyst surface as abundant catalytic active sites, as well as promote the appearance of more pores and voids in the morphology to diffuse and permeate electrolyte due to the highest specific surface area, and the PCE value of 5.78 % was also superior to 5.51 % of Pt CE.

Synthesis and characterization of the doped/co‐doped SnO2 nanoparticles by the sol–gel method

AbstractTin oxide (SnO2) is one of the important semiconductors used in the application of solar cells because of its chemical–mechanical stability and wide band gap. These properties are very important for the performance development and photoanode optimization of a dye‐sensitized solar cell (DSSC). However, the low conduction band value of SnO2 reduces the photovoltaic efficiency, which limits the application of DSSC. Therefore, the doping strategy was used to increase the sensitivity to the visible light spectrum and change the light absorption properties of SnO2. In this paper, pure SnO2, Ag/SnO2, Pt/SnO2, and Pt/Ag/SnO2 nanoparticles were synthesized at the nanoscale by a simple chemical sol–gel method. To characterize the structure, morphological/chemical properties, optical properties, and surface properties of the synthesized SnO2 nanoparticles, X‐Ray Diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet–visible, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)/Energy Dispersive X‐Ray Spectroscopy (EDX), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and particle size analysis were respectively used. XRD results showed that the crystal sizes varied between 8.8 and 12.2 nm depending on the doping. Doping processes resulted in reductions in particle sizes. Optical studies resulted in decreases in the band gap with the doping process. The conclusions obtained have shown that Ag doping, and Pt–Ag co‐doping can be promising for use as photoanode materials in semiconductor technology and especially in DSSC applications.

Synergistic charge-transfer dynamics of novel D-D-A-π-A framework containing indoline-benzo[d][1,2,3]thiadiazole based push-pull sensitizers: from structural engineering to performance metrics in photovoltaic solar cells.

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) present a convincing substitute for conventional silicon-based solar cells because of their possible lower manufacturing costs and versatile uses. Electron injection and dye regeneration processes are important in meeting the need for photosensitizers with improved efficiency and stability. Aimed at enhancing the performance and efficiency of DSSCs, this study focuses on the structural engineering to performance metrics of novel indoline-benzo[d][1,2,3]thiadiazole based push-pull sensitizers (LHZ1 to LHZ9) with D-D-A-π-A framework. The current study provides insights into the photovoltaic and optoelectronic properties of the investigated dyes, which are significantly influenced by the modification of auxiliary donors (D), internal acceptors with thiophene as a spacer, and cyanoacrylic acid (A) as the terminal acceptor. These modifications enhance rapid charge transfer among the dyes, highlighting the critical role of dye-semiconductor interactions. The suitability of developed sensitizers for DSSCs applications is confirmed by executing quantum methods like NBO, TDM, FMO, DOS, Eb, ΔGreg, ΔGinject, VRP, and ICT parameters qCT (e-), DCT ( ), H index ( ), ∆( ), t index ( ), and μCT (D). All of the investigated dyes have HOMO levels lower than the electrode I-/I3-'s redox potential (-4.8 eV) and LUMO values that are appropriately higher than the conduction band of TiO2 (-4.0 eV). The novel dyes showed a closing of the energy gap (2.38-1.84 eV). The LHZ7 and LHZ8 molecules with the lowest Eg (1.97 eV and 1.84 eV) demonstrated the highest absorption (up to 746 nm > 402 nm for LHZ), which was caused by the insertion effect of varied donors and internal acceptors. Almost all photosensitizers appeared with remarkable properties, i.e., red-shifted absorption maxima (746 nm), lowest Ex (1.66 eV), Eb (0.02 eV), and highest values of LHE (0.958). The TDM analysis revealed high charge density on HOMO of donor and LUMO of acceptors in designed dyes. DOS analysis revealed that the donor parts of the molecules delocalized the highest occupied molecular orbitals of dye particles. The electronic properties predicted by the NBO analysis showed that donor groups donate high and faster transfer of charge, and internal acceptor groups rapidly accept them. The electron injection (ΔGinject) and dye regeneration (ΔGreg) analysis of photosensitizers attached with TiO2 proved efficient charge transfer properties from the donor of newly designed dyes onto the conduction band of TiO2. This study, also supported by the thermodynamic stability of dyes with negative values of Gibbs free energy, revealed that the performance of the designed dyes is augmented by modifying the donor and internal acceptors of the reference photosensitizer for effective application in the experimental community. All of the dyes are suitable for DSSCs based on the calculated parameters. Still, the LHZ9 dye proved proficient in applying dye-sensitized solar cells due to its remarkable properties, i.e., lowest gap and red-shifted absorption maxima.
