An excellent super-polarization-independent optical directional coupler based on dual-core photonic crystal fibre with a bandwidth of 390 nm

Abstract In this work, a novel structure of dual-core photonic crystal fibre (PCF) is proposed to realize the super-polarization-independent optical directional coupler, based on the feasibility of optical fibre manufacturing process and the need of practical application into account. The introduced fluorine-doped elliptical cores with a rotation angle of 45 degrees successfully realize the super-polarization-independent coupling performance within the effective wavelength range of 1230-1620nm, with a difference in coupling ratios between two polarized lights of less than 0.004%. In other words, it counteracts the negative effects of the introduction of dual cores on the structure's symmetry. This greatly reduces the difference in coupling ratio between the two polarization states and effectively eliminates the polarization-dependence of the dual-core PCF. In addition, when compared to traditional elliptical air holes, the solid elliptical structure offers greater ease of control, making manufacturing less challenging. Consequently, this innovative structure is poised for widespread adoption in today's optical communication networks.

Optimizing PCF-SPR sensor design through Taguchi approach, machine learning, and genetic algorithms

Designing Photonic Crystal Fibers incorporating the Surface Plasmon Resonance Phenomenon (PCF-SPR) has led to numerous interesting applications. This investigation presents an exceptionally responsive surface plasmon resonance sensor, seamlessly integrated into a dual-core photonic crystal fiber, specifically designed for low refractive index (RI) detection. The integration of a plasmonic material, namely silver (Ag), externally deposited on the fiber structure, facilitates real-time monitoring of variations in the refractive index of the surrounding medium. To ensure long-term functionality and prevent oxidation, a thin layer of titanium dioxide (TiO2) covers the silver coating. To optimize the sensor, five key design parameters, including pitch, air hole diameter, and silver thickness, are fine-tuned using the Taguchi L8(25) orthogonal array. The optimal results obtained present spectral and amplitude sensitivities that reach remarkable values of 10,000 nm/RIU and 235,882 RIU-1, respectively. In addition, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) optimization techniques, specifically Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), are used to predict a critical optical property of the sensor confinement loss (αloss). These predictions are derived from the same input structure parameters that are present in the full L32(25) design experiment. A genetic algorithm (GA) is then applied for optimization with the goal of maximizing the confinement loss. Our results highlight the effectiveness of training PSO artificial neural networks and demonstrate their ability to quickly and accurately predict results for unknown geometric dimensions, demonstrating their significant potential in this innovative context. The proposed sensor design can be used for various applications including pharmaceutical inspection and detection of low refractive index analytes.

Highly sensitive magnetic field sensor using magnetic fluid filled dual-core photonic crystal fiber

A high sensitivity fiber optic magnetic field sensor that utilizes a dual-core photonic crystal fiber (DC-PCF) filled with magnetic fluid (MF) has been proposed and validated to simultaneously detect magnetic field intensity and temperature. DC-PCF is a multimode fiber that supports various modes of light transmission and induces intermodal interference within fiber core. The numerical analysis of the mode characteristics of DC-PCF is conducted. The sensing structure relies on the use of a DC-PCF with air holes filled with a suitable material, such as MF substance. The analysis of the working principle of the DC-PCF for sensing and measurement is conducted by considering its structural characteristics and mode characteristics. The effective refractive index (ERI) of MF is affected by external magnetic field intensity and temperature. To extract the effective frequency points, the fast Fourier transform (FFT) method can be employed. Additionally, the inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) method can be utilized to determine the magnetic field sensitivity, which can reach up to 1.562 nm/mT. Furthermore, the temperature sensitivity can be as high as −1.043 nm/°C. The sensor demonstrates excellent repeatability and showcases low detection limits of 0.0128 mT and 0.0192 °C, respectively. Additionally, the proposed sensor exhibits substantial potential for further development in the field of high sensitivity magnetic field detection applications.

Highly sensitive gamma ray dosimeter based on dual-core photonic crystal fiber

This paper introduces the application of a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) sensor to be used as a gamma ray dosimeter. This paper proposes an efficient analysis of a highly sensitive surface Plasmon resonance for gamma ray dose detection in nuclear research reactors. The proposed structure makes use of a Poly-Vinyl Alcohol (PVA) polymer, which has high sensitivity to an external electric field and gamma rays making it suitable for nuclear reactor applications. At resonance frequency, the peak of spectral loss for dosimeter sensors refers to gamma irradiation dose values. Therefore, study the different geometrical parameters for the proposed PCF sensor is of significant importance to achieve high sensitivity with low spectral losses. The full-vectorial finite-element method has been used for analysis with the plane wave expansion method. The sensitivity of the suggested sensor achieves up to 0.006 µm per gamma-ray dose unit (μm/Gy) with low losses.

Ultra-broadband small-size dual-core photonic crystal fiber polarization splitter based on silver coating

We have proposed a novel silver-coated ultra-broadband small-size dual-core photonic crystal fiber (DC-PCF) polarization splitter which achieves a short length, high extinction ratio (ER) and ultra-wide bandwidth at the commonly used communication wavelength band. Finite element method-based numerical simulation is applied to carry out a thorough investigation for wavelength from 1 to 2 μm. According to the simulation results, the coupling qualities of the proposed structure can be improved by resonant coupling between the core guide mode and the surface plasmon polarization (SPP) exciton mode. By analyzing the change of ER with varying wavelength, the ER value of this work are achieved as 67.4 and 67.1 dB when the wavelength are 1.14 and 1.57 μm, respectively. The final splitting length (LS) is 17.17 μm. To the best of our knowledge, it is difficult to achieve in all previous studies. With a splitting bandwidth of 900 nm (1.0–1.9 μm) and the ER value of −50.1 dB at 1.55 μm, the E + S + C + L + U communication bands are completely covered. The proposed model has excellent beam-splitting performance, such as ultra-short LS, ultra-wide splitting bandwidth and good tolerance performance, with potential applications in optical fiber communications or fiber laser devices.

P T-symmetry breaking in dual-core phosphate-glass photonic crystal fibers.

We investigate the properties of a soft glass dual-core photonic crystal fiber for application in multicore waveguiding with balanced gain and loss. Its base material is a phosphate glass in a P2O5-Al2O3-Yb2O3-BaO-ZnO-MgO-Na2O oxide system. The separated gain and loss cores are realized with two cores with ytterbium and copper doping of the base phosphate glass. The ytterbium-doped core supports a laser (gain) activity under excitation with a pump at 1000 nm wavelength, while the CuO-doped is responsible for strong attenuation at the same wavelength. We establish conditions for an exact balance between gain and loss and investigate pulse propagation by solving a system of coupled generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations. We predict two states of light under excitation with hyperbolic secant pulses centered at 1000 nm: 1) linear oscillation of the pulse energy between gain and loss core (P T-symmetry state), with strong power attenuation; 2) retention of the pulse in the excited gain core (broken P T-symmetry), with very modest attenuation. The optimal pulse energy levels were identified to be 100 pJ (first state) and 430 pJ (second state).

Numerical analysis of a compact all-fiber polarization beam splitter based on dual-core photonic crystal fiber with As2S3 thin layer

Modern-day optical systems are evolving towards miniaturization and integration, leading to higher performance demands for polarizing beam splitters (PBSs). A simple-structure and high-performance PBS based on dual-core photonic crystal fiber (DC-PCF) with As2S3 layer is proposed. The finite element method (FEM) and classical coupled-mode theory (CMT) are utilized to investigate the performance of this PBS. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed PBS can achieve a minimum length of 2.65 mm, a minimum extinction ratio of −64 dB, an operating bandwidth of 420 nm, and a minimum insertion loss of 0.03 dB when the optimal parameters include cladding hole diameter of 1.0 μm, central hole diameter of 2.0 μm, lattice spacing of 2.0 μm, and As2S3 ring layer thickness of 50 nm. Moreover, it also possesses a high birefringence of 3.58 × 10−3 and a negative dispersion of −30 ps/km/nm at 1.55 μm. It is believed that the proposed PBS holds great potential to become a critical device in optical multiplexing technologies.

Study on preparation and curvature sensing performance of dual-core photonic crystal fibers

A method of fabricating dual-core photonic crystal fiber(PCF) using secondary drawing technique is presented. The diameter of fiber core can be reduced to 4μm by placing the thin preform into glass sleeve for secondary drawing. Dual-core PCF, partial dual-core PCF and non-centrosymmetric dual-core PCF are successfully prepared by secondary drawing technology combined with air pressure regulation. A curvature sensing system is built. When the length of partial dual-core PCF is 105 mm, the measured curvature sensitivity is −3.79944 nm/m−1. Through the water bath temperature experiment, the measured temperature sensitivity is 21 pm/∘C, and the cross interference caused by temperature value on curvature value is very small. When the length of non-centrosymmetric dual-core PCF is 207 mm, the curvature sensitivity measured by forward bending and negative bending is 4.68429 nm/m−1 and −4.68808 nm/m−1, respectively. The measured temperature sensitivity is −13 pm/∘C, and the cross interference of temperature on curvature can be ignored.

Highly sensitive dual core photonic crystal fiber-based LSPR sensor with simultaneous multi-analyte detection of a wide refractive index range

This manuscript introduces an anisotropic highly sensitive dual core photonic crystal fiber sensor based on localized surface plasmon resonance, possessing the ability to detect multiple analytes simultaneously. Liquid analytes having a refractive index (RI) within the range of 1.25 to 1.5 RIU have been investigated using the proposed sensor. The numerical analysis of the sensing parameters for the proposed sensor shows a maximum wavelength sensitivity of 47,500 nm/RIU for x-polarization (Channel 1) and 18,050 nm/RIU for y-polarization (Channel 2), respectively using the wavelength interrogation technique. Maximum amplitude sensitivity of 625 RIU−1 and 437 RIU−1 is obtained for x−pol. and y−pol., respectively using the amplitude interrogation technique. Maximum sensor resolution of 2.11 × 10−6 RIU and 5.01 × 10−6 RIU is obtained for x−pol. and y−pol., respectively. The linear relationship of the resonant wavelength with the RI produces R2 = 0.9976 and R2 = 0.9979, corresponding to a degree (3) for x−pol. and y−pol., respectively. The figure of merit for x−pol. and y−pol. are 84 RIU−1 and 123 RIU−1.

THz dual-core liquid photonic crystal fiber with high negative dispersion

A novel photonic crystal fiber (PCF) design is proposed and analyzed with highly negative dispersion for THz applications. The reported PCF has TOPAS background material due to its low material loss in THz regime. Further, dual porous cores are constructed and selectively infiltrated with liquid crystal (LC) material to control the dispersion characteristics of the reported PCF. The basic operation of the suggested dual core LCPCF (DC-LCPCF) depends on the optical coupling between the supported modes of the two porous core regions in the THz regime to achieve high negative dispersion for the two fundamental polarizations: transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM). The coupling can be switched between the TE and TM modes by applying an external electric field on the LC material via two metallic electrodes. The full vectorial finite element method (FVFEM) is utilized to study the dispersion characteristics of the DC-LCPCF structure. The obtained results reveal that the TE and TM modes have large negative chromatic dispersions of − 44.57 ps/THz/cm and − 30.59 ps/THz/cm at frequencies of 0.386 THz and 0.4027 THz, respectively. So, it will be a solution for further innovation of fiber devices in the THz regime.

Dual-core-enhanced surface plasmon resonance for sensing high refractive index liquid based on photonic crystal fiber

A dual-core photonic crystal fiber sensor based on surface plasmon resonance is theoretically proposed for the high-sensitive detection of high refractive index liquid analytes. Dual-core construction can effectively enhance the coupling effect between the fiber-core mode and the surface plasmon polariton modes, leading to sharp loss peaks at the resonance wavelengths. As the refractive index of the targeted analyte varies, the resonance condition will change as well and cause a certain shift of loss peak. Numeric results show that this dual-core fiber sensor exhibits an average linear sensitivity 9538 nm/RIU and a maximum sensitivity is 11400 nm/RIU with a resolution 8.77 × 10−6 RIU. The detected range is broad and covers the high refractive index range from 1.45 to 1.58 with an average figure of merit 284.5 RIU−1. The dependence of structure parameters and the thickness of coated-metal thin-film on sensing performance is performed systemically and suggests different responses. The proposed sensor is highly promising in detecting high refractive index liquid analytes in the fields of biological detection, environmental monitoring and chemical analysis.

Machine-learning-assisted omnidirectional bending sensor based on a cascaded asymmetric dual-core PCF sensor.

An omnidirectional bending sensor comprising cascaded asymmetric dual-core photonic crystal fibers (ADCPCFs) is designed and demonstrated experimentally. Upon cascading and splicing two ADCPCFs at a lateral rotation angle, the transmission spectrum of the sensor becomes highly dependent on the bending direction. Machine learning (ML) is employed to predict the curvature and bending orientation of the bending sensor for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The experimental results demonstrate that the ADCPCF sensor used in combination with machine learning can predict the curvature and omnidirectional bending orientation within 360° without requiring any post-processing fabrication steps. The prediction accuracy is 99.85% with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 2.7° for bending direction measurement and 98.08% with an MAE of 0.03 m-1 for the curvature measurement. This promising strategy utilizes the global features (full spectra) in combination with machine learning to overcome the dependence of the sensor on high-quality transmission spectra, the wavelength range, and a special wavelength dip in the conventional dip tracking method. This excellent omnidirectional bending sensor has large potential for structural health monitoring, robotic arms, medical instruments, and wearable devices.

Comprehensive Analysis of Dual Core Photonic Crystal Fibers for Optimizing Optical Properties Towards Highly Coherent Supercontinuum Generation

A systematic study implementing numerical analysis has been presented in this work in order to design a hexagonal lattice dual core photonic crystal fiber (DC-PCF) which will be simple to fabricate but possesses very good values of optical properties for supercontinuum generation (SCG). By utilizing a full vectoral finite element method with perfectly matched boundary conditions, important propagation properties are numerically evaluated and tuned to desired value through the optimization of structural parameters. Finally, it is found that the optimized PCF structure exhibits very low confinement loss, high birefringence, large effective mode area while maintaining negative chromatic dispersion of <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$-$</tex-math></inline-formula> 8.3138 ps/km.nm pumping at 1060 nm wavelength. The fiber when excited by a hyperbolic secant pulse having a full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 50 fs and a relatively low energy of 4 nJ generates a SC spectrum spanning 600 nm to 1600 nm. The effect of altering the pump power and other parameters on the generated spectra is also explored. Furthermore, the input noise effects on generated SCs have been analyzed through the inclusion of different types of noise. It is found that the generated SC demonstrates excellent coherence property over the entire band extended from visible to the near-IR region and thus it may find applications in lasing, biological imaging, and telecommunication.

A Magnetic Field Sensor Based on Directional Coupling in a Magnetic Fluid-Filled Photonic Crystal Fiber.

In this paper, a dual-core photonic crystal fiber (DC-PCF) sensitivity sensor filled with magnetic liquid is introduced and investigated with the finite element method (FEM). To regulate the energy coupling involving the two cores, the magnetic fluid is filled into the pore between the two cores. To adjust the coupling between the supermodes in the DC-PCF, the refractive index (RI) of the air hole filled magnetic fluid may change due to the external magnetic field. This specifically created a magnetic fluid-filled DC-PCF; the magnetic fluid-filled hole is not used as the core for energy transmission, thus avoiding transmission loss. The dip wavelength and the magnetic field displayed an excellent linear connection between 80 and 260 Oe, depending on the numerical data. The detection sensitivity of the magnetic field reached 515.75 pm/Oe at a short fiber length of 482 µm. The designed magnetic fluid-filled DC-PCF has high sensitivity and small volume and has great application prospects in magnetic field detection in the medical and industrial fields.

Gold coated surface plasmon resonance based biosensor: An hexagonal photonic crystal Fiber platform

We numerically analyze a dual-core gold coated photonic crystal fiber (PCF) biosensor based on surface plasmon resonance that can be used for remote sensing applications in place of the traditional prism-based biosensor. Chemically stable active plasmonic material gold (Au) are positioned outside the fiber structure as a sensing layer to facilitate the construction of the sensor. From finite element method (FEM) based simulation, it is shown that the proposed sensor has the maximum wavelength sensitivity of 5000 nm/RIU. In addition, the amplitude sensitivity of the sensor is 267.66 RIU−1 with the resolution of 2.00 × 10−5 RIU−1 having sensing range of analyte refractive index 1.30 to 1.40. The suggested two-ring dual-core PCF sensor can be used to detect biological analytes, organic compounds, biomolecules, and other unidentified analytes due to its high sensitivity, enhanced sensing resolution, and suitable linearity properties. The proposed sensor has high sensitivity and wide operating range; from visible to mid-infrared which enables the detection of various biomolecules with different absorption or fluorescence spectra. Overall, the unique combination of structural design and optical properties make hexagonal PCF biosensor a promising and innovative platform for advanced and high-performance biosensing applications.

Dual core photonic crystal fiber based plasmonic refractive index sensor with ultra-wide detection range.

In this study, an ultra-wide range plasmonic refractive index sensor based on dual core photonic crystal fiber is suggested and analyzed numerically. The proposed design achieves fabrication feasibility by employing external sensing mechanism in which silver is deposited onto the flat outer surface of the fiber as plasmonic material. A thin layer of titanium oxide (TiO2) is considered on top of the silver layer for preventing its oxidation problem. The sensor attains identification of a vast array of analytes consisting a wide range of refractive indices of 1.10 - 1.45. It achieves a maximum spectral sensitivity of 24300 nm/RIU along with its corresponding resolution of 4.12 × 10-6 RIU. The maximum figure of merit of the sensor is 120 RIU-1. The sensor also supports amplitude interrogation approach and exhibits a maximum amplitude sensitivity of 172 RIU-1. The impact of the design parameters such as radius of air holes, polishing distance, thickness of silver and titanium oxide layers are investigated thoroughly. An ultra-wide detection range with high sensitivity, fabrication feasibility, and easy application make the sensor a potential candidate for detection of a wide array of bio-originated materials, chemicals, and other analytes.
