A quad port dual band notch UWB MIMO antenna using hybrid decoupling structure

A four-port dual-band notch ultrawideband (UWB) multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) antenna for automotive applications is presented. Initially, a circular patch monopole antenna is designed and optimized by embedding a rectangular stub onto the radiator and lowering the ground plane to realize the UWB frequency spectrum. The dual-band frequency notch, from 4.6 to 5.9 and 6.8–8.8 GHz, is achieved using a half wavelength slot onto the feedline and a pair of H-shaped stubs across the feedline, respectively, to cover WLAN and complete x-band satellite communication. Further, the designed dual-band notch UWB antenna is transformed to a four-port MIMO antenna with interelement spacing much smaller than λ/4 (λ at 3.1 GHz) and a size of 0.46 × 0.41 × 0.01 λ3. Isolation improvement is achieved by a hybrid decoupling technique comprising a distinctive neutralization line (NL) and defected ground structure (DGS). The average isolation of the proposed design is better than 22 dB. Characteristic mode analysis of the proposed antenna is performed to analyze the specific significant mode and their contribution to the antenna radiation. The antenna design's diversity and time-domain properties are analyzed and found suitable for automotive applications. The antenna's electromagnetic interaction with the electrically large structure is studied by mounting the antenna onto an open-source automobile model, and the gain is determined to be more than 6.1 dB at the antenna's resonant frequencies.

Design of Dual-Band Notched UWB Antenna Loaded with Split Ring Resonators for Wide Band Rejection

ABSTRACT Nowadays, the design of a miniaturised ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna with wide dual band-notched characteristics gained widespread demand in wireless communications to reduce interference. The design of a planar CPW-fed circular UWB antenna loaded with split ring resonators and stubs is presented to eliminate two frequency bands. Two symmetrical circular split ring resonators are etched below the CPW feed at the backside of a circular UWB monopole antenna to suppress 3.61 GHz–5.57 GHz (sub-6 GHz band) wideband interference, whereas the 7.06 GHz–8.79 GHz (X-band uplinks and downlinks) band is suppressed by loading two L-shaped stubs. Slots are also made on the patch and ground to enhance impedance matching at a lower resonance frequency. The proposed notch band antenna has a compact size of 38 × 32 × 1.6 mm3 and has the highest gain of 5.75 dB at a frequency of 9 GHz. The parametric analysis has been performed to obtain optimised dimensions for better performance. The designed antenna is simulated, prototyped and tested to validate the antenna design.

A Compact Dual-Band Notched UWB Antenna for Wireless Applications

This article presents the design and analysis of a V-shaped ultrawideband (UWB) antenna and dual-band UWB notch antenna. A rectangular slot is cut into a semicircular partial ground plane of the antenna to achieve ultrawide bandwidth. A U-shape slot is etched on a V-shaped patch that radiates, and an inverted U-shape parasitic resonator is placed beside the feedline to generate dual-band notch characteristics. The overall dimension of the proposed antenna is . The proposed UWB antenna has a gain of 9.8 dB, S11 < −10 dB, impedance bandwidth in the range of 3.4 to 12.3 GHz, response with a linear phase, group delay <1 ns, and stable radiation pattern. The UWB notch antenna shows strong rejection in the WLAN band from 5.15 to 5.8 GHz with a notch at 5.6 GHz and X band from 9.1 to 10.5 GHz with a sharp notch at 9.6 GHz, having a S11 < −10 dB impedance bandwidth ranging from 3.2 to 11.7 GHz. This antenna also exhibits a stable radiation pattern, group delay <1 ns, and linear phase response throughout the bandwidth except at the rejection frequencies.

Design and Analysis of Dual Band-Notched UWB Antenna Using a Slot in Feed and Asymmetrical Parasitic stub

A novel elliptically slotted antenna (ESA), with two notched bands for Ultrawideband (UWB) applications, is presented. The ESA comprises of an elliptically slotted radiator with a beveled defected ground structure (DGS) for achieving UWB bandwidth ranging from 3.42 to 11.79 GHz (110%) for VSWR< 2. Two rejected bands at WLAN (5.02–5.97 GHz) and down link of X- band (7.23–7.72 GHz) applications are obtained by etching S-shaped slot in the microstrip feed line and an asymmetrical C- shaped parasitic stub above the DGS, respectively. The ESA is printed on FR-4 substrate with a compact size of 24 × 28 and with a stable gain fluctuation from 2 to 4.08 dBi. A good matching, achieved in-between tested and simulated results, makes ESA to be a suitable candidate for WLAN/X-band-notched UWB applications.

Design of a dual band-notched UWB antenna and improvement of the 5.5 GHz WLAN notched characteristic

ABSTRACTA novel dual band-notched ultra-wideband (UWB) planar antenna with improved characteristic in 5.5 GHz WLAN notched band is presented. Two kinds of L-shaped slots are inserted in the radiator in order to obtain the dual notched characteristics. A separated strip is added in the middle of the U-shaped radiator for further improving the performance. The antenna has a measured impedance bandwidth of 3.1–11.0 GHz with VSWR < 2, while it has dual notched bands of 3.4–4.0 GHz and 4.9–6.0 GHz. Besides, the equivalent circuit model, transmission line model and transfer function are also studied to investigate the band-notched performance of the proposed antenna.

Multimode resonator‐assisted dual band notch UWB antenna with additional bluetooth resonance characteristics

A compact planar integrated ultra-wideband (UWB) and Bluetooth antenna are presented in this study. The basic radiator is circular in shape with a wide slit in it to accommodate a space optimised T-shaped stub for Bluetooth frequency band. The proposed antenna is CPW-fed with bevelled ground planes for the purpose of improvement in input impedance matching. A novel multimode resonator at the back of the substrate is responsible for the creation of two-notched band at 5.5 and 8.1 GHz. The antenna exhibits an operational bandwidth of 3.–12 GHz for UWB application. The proposed antenna also has Bluetooth resonance characteristics at 2.4 GHz. The overall size of the antenna is 14 × 32 × 1.59 mm 3 . The antenna has a peak realised gain of 4 dBi and a constant group delay. The radiation pattern is also stable throughout the operational bandwidth. A fabricated prototype is developed and tested. Results obtained from electromagnetic simulation, equivalent circuit model, and measurement are in good agreement.

A Compact Reconfigurable Dual Band-Notched Ultra-Wideband Antenna using Varactor Diodes

In this paper, a reconfigurable dual band-notched ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna is presented. The antenna design consists of a circular shape with two pairs of the L-resonator. To realize the notch characteristics in WLAN at 5.2 GHz and 5.8 GHz bands, the half wavelength of the L-resonator is introduced in the design. The T-shaped notch is etched in the ground to enhance the bandwidth which covers the UWB operating frequency range from 3.219 – 10.863 GHz. The proposed reconfigurable dual band-notched UWB antenna shows good impedance matching for the simulated in the physical layout. Furthermore, the proposed antenna has a compact size of 37.6 x 28 mm2. This proposed reconfigurable design can provide an alternative solution for the wireless system in the designing of a band-notched antenna with a good tuning capability.

Analysis and Design of a Dual Band-Notched UWB Antenna Using Complementary Split Ring Resonator

In this paper, the complementary split ring resonator (CSRR) is studied and applied to design a printed ultra wideband (UWB) antenna with dual band-notched characteristics. Dual band-notched function is obtained by incorporating the CSRR in the radiating element and the ground plane of the proposed UWB antenna. The designed antenna has a small size and operates over the frequency band from 3.2 GHz to 13.5 GHz, with dual-band rejection at 3.5 GHz (WiMAX band) and the other at 5-6 GHz (WLAN band). The antenna electromagnetic characteristics such as the S (11) parameter, the radiation pattern and the gain are simulated using HFSS and CST. The obtained results are in good agreement and show that the proposed antenna can be used for UWB applications.

Compact Dual Band-Notched Monopole Antenna with Modified Radiating Patch for UWB Wireless Applications

Ultra-wideband (UWB) planar antennas with single or multiple notched frequency bands properties have recently been considered for various communications between wireless devices. In this study, a low profile microstrip monopole antenna with double band-filtering function is designed and investigated. FR-4 dielectric with properties of e = 4.4 and δ = 0.02 has been employed as the antenna substrate. The configuration of the proposed design is composed of a modified fork-shaped radiating patch with inverted Ω-shaped slot and a pair of coupled Γ-shaped parasitic structures, a feed-line and a ground plane. The proposed dual band-notched UWB antenna provides good impedance bandwidth characteristic from 2.89 to 12.43 GHz for VSWR <2 with two notched bands which cover all the 5.2/5.8 GHz of WLAN, 3.5/5.5 GHz of WiMAX and 4-GHz of C bands ranges. The antenna provides good radiation behavior with sufficient gain levels over its operation frequency band.

Compact Dual Band-Notched Characteristics UWB Antenna Using Nested G-Shaped Slots

This paper presents a dual band-notched characteristics ultra-wideband (UWB) printed monopole antenna with a compact size for wideband wireless communication applications. The proposed antenna has a leaf shape patch with nested G-shaped slots and a partially grounded plane fed with 50 Ω microstrip feed line. The designed antenna has a wide bandwidth of more than 9.86 GHz (2.3 GHz – 12.16 GHz). The return loss of the antenna is less than -10 dB except at the frequencies from 3.18 to 3.7 GHz for rejecting WiMAX and from 5.5 to 5.95 GHz for rejecting WLAN signals. The rejected frequency bands have been created using simple G-shaped slots etched within the patch. Multi notched bands are employed by nesting multi G-shaped slots without enlarging the antenna whole size. The central frequency of the notched bands is fully controlled by the G-slots dimensions. The proposed antenna has a compact size of 21×27 mm2. Extensive simulations are carried out using 3D full-wave FEM-based EM simulator. Parametric analyses to optimize the antenna parameters are performed. The proposed antenna exhibits nearly Omni-directional radiation pattern over the whole desired frequency bands. The measurements and EM simulations are in good agreement.

Design of a Stub-Loaded Ring-Resonator Slot for Antenna Applications

A T-shaped stub-loaded ring-resonator (SLRR) slot etched on the ground plane or on the radiating patch has been designed and analyzed for antenna applications. Compared with the conventional ring slot, the two resonant frequencies of the proposed SLRR-slot can be lowered, and can also be tunable by varying the parameters of the four T-shaped stubs. To validate the design concept, a tri-band printed antenna and a dual band-notched ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna using the SLRR-slot on the ground plane and radiating patch, respectively, are presented. For the tri-band antenna, a simple U-shaped slot etched on the microstrip feeding line is used to excite a third upper-frequency band independently without increasing the overall size of the antenna and without affecting the lower two bands. The proposed tri-band antenna has three frequency bands of 2.4, 3.5, and 5.8 GHz, and the dual band-notched UWB antenna can guarantee a very wide bandwidth from 3.0 to 12.0 GHz with dual undesired bands successfully. The experimental results including radiation patterns, peak gains and efficiencies of both antennas are presented.

Design and Analysis of a Novel Dual Band-Notched UWB Antenna

A novel ultrawide band (UWB) antenna with dual band-notched characteristics is presented. The first band rejection is provided by an arc H-shaped slot on the radiating patch. The parametric study of the arc H-shaped slot shows that this structure enables rejectband characteristic with improved control compared to traditional H-shaped slot. Based on the single band-notched UWB antenna, the second notched band is realized by etching narrow slots on the ground plane. By tuning the parameters of these slots, the proposed UWB antenna can operate from 2.9 GHz to above 10 GHz, except for the bandwidth of 3.3–3.6 GHz for WiMAX application and 5.1–5.9 GHz for WLAN application. Simulated and measured results show that the proposed antenna provides excellent band rejection and is a good candidate for future UWB application.

A COMPACT DUAL BAND-NOTCHED ULTRAWIDEBAND ANTENNA WITH Λ/4 STUB AND OPEN SLOTS

A novel compact UWB antenna with 3.5/5.5GHz dual notch-band characteristics is presented. The proposed antenna has a simple structure and compact size of 30 £ 35mm 2 . Firstly, a compact modifled rotated monopole antenna that covers UWB band is achieved. Then by inserting a ‚/4 stub and etching two symmetrical ‚/4 L-shape slots on the UWB antenna achieved before, a dual band-notched ultra-wideband antenna is obtained. The prototypes of UWB antenna with and without notched bands were fabricated and measured. Good performance of dual notched bands, stable gain and omnidirectional radiation patterns make the proposed antenna promising for UWB application.

Dual Band-Notch UWB Antenna With Single Tri-Arm Resonator

A microstrip line-fed planar antenna with dual notched bands is designed and prototyped for ultrawideband (UWB) communication applications. The dual band-notch characteristic is achieved by etching a single tri-arm resonator below the patch. The simulated and experimental results show that the designed antenna has achieved a wide bandwidth (return loss ≤ -10 dB) ranging from 2.98 to 10.76 GHz with two notched bands operating at 3.5 and 5.5 GHz. The proposed antenna uses only one simple filter element to create and control dual notched bands, which give it advantages over the recently proposed band-notch antennas. In addition, the designed antenna achieved a good gain and exhibits omnidirectional radiation patterns except at notched bands, which make it a suitable candidate for UWB applications.

Compact Microstrip Antenna Structures with Multiband, Broadband, and Band-Notched Properties, for Portable Devices

It is difficult to list all the current applications for microstrip antennas; it could be said that they are the transducers that control modern life. Yet, every year, new applications are required which challenge the performance limits of current designs. Some of those challenges are associated with controlling the spectrum performance and continuing to seek techniques to tailor the shape to the applications. This special issue brings some of the latest thinking in compact microstrip antenna design. However, the variety of approaches presented in the papers shows the possibilities that exist for future developments: this special issue is as much about setting out possibilities as it is about presenting new thinking. The papers in this special issue are as follows. An approach to design microstrip antennas is presented in “Design of arbitrarily shaped planar microstrip antenna arrays with improved efficiency” which considers improved radiation efficiency. Focusing on the application areas of Bluetooth and WLAN, a dual-band planar inverted-E antenna (PIEA) is presented in “Compact dual-band planar inverted-eshaped antenna using defected ground structure” with a novel ground. A mesh grid structure planar wideband zero index metamaterial (ZIM) antenna is presented in “Zero index metamaterial for designing high-gain patch antenna” that provides a bandwidth of 9.9GHz to 11.4 GHz.An arc H-shaped slot on the radiating patch provides dual bandnotched characteristics which is discussed in “Design and analysis of a novel dual band-notched UWB antenna.” The paper entitled “Printed modified bow-tie dipole antenna for DVB/WLAN applications” presents a printed modified bow-tie dipole antenna which consists of asymmetric feed and inserted slots. A frequency range of 3.1– 10.6GHz is achieved by an antenna of only 30mm × 36mm and is discussed in “A compact UWB diversity antenna.” Amodified compact planar ultrawideband (UWB) monopole antenna with triple controllable band-notched characteristics is presented in “A compact planar UWB antenna with triple controllable band-notched characteristics,” which consists of a modified staircased V-shaped radiating element and partial ground plane. The radiation pattern is controlled using elliptical and rectangular patches, which is discussed in “A compact size 4–19.1 GHz heart shape UWB antenna with triangular patches.”

Compact dual band-notched UWB antenna with hexagonal slotted ground plane

A novel compact dual band-notched ultra-wide band antenna with hexagonal slotted ground is proposed. By inserting two pairs of L-shaped branches symmetrically into the slotted ground plane, two notched bands, 3.3–3.7 GHz for worldwide interoperability for microwave access and 5.15–5.825 GHz for wireless local area network, are achieved, respectively. A prototype of the proposed antenna is designed, fabricated, and tested. By optimizing the length of the L-shaped branches and the gap between them, the desired bandwidth of VSWR (voltage standing wave ratio) less than 2.0 can be achieved, ranging from 2.5 to 11 GHz, except two stop-bands of 3.1–4.0 and 5.0–6.0 GHz. The simulated and measured results of the proposed antenna have shown a reasonable agreement between them. The proposed antenna has a compact size, ultra wide bandwidth, good radiation characteristics, and good time-domain behaviors. It is very suitable for modern wireless communication applications.

A SIMPLE AND COMPACT PLANAR ULTRA WIDEBAND ANTENNA WITH SINGLE OR DUAL BAND-NOTCHED CHARACTERISTICS

A printed monopole ultra wideband (UWB) antenna with frequency band-notched characteristics is proposed and investigated. The antenna consists of a half-disk shaped structure combined with an inverted isosceles trapezoid structure. To achieve the frequency band notched characteristics, an open-ended thin slit with a length of about one quarter guided wavelength is inserted on the radiator. Multiple slits can be employed to realize multiple frequency band notched characteristics. To validate the concept, two prototypes aredesigned, fabricated and tested. The ¯rst is a single band notched UWB antenna whereas the second is a dual band notched UWB antenna. The simulated and measured results of both antennas are presented shown a reasonable agreement between them. The results also con¯rm the proposed UWB antenna design can achieve superior dual band-notch performance at desired frequency bands. 1

A COMPACT UWB ANTENNA WITH SHARP DUAL BAND-NOTCHED CHARACTERISTICS FOR LOWER AND UPPER WLAN BAND

A compact dual band-notched Ultra-Wideband antenna with sharp band-notched characteristics and controllable notched bandwidths is presented. The antenna consists of a spade-shaped microstrip-fed Ultra-Wideband planar monopole antenna and two sets of band-notched structures. The band-notched structures are employed to generate the desired lower and upper rejection bands with good frequency selectivity and su-cient rejection bandwidths. Moreover, the bandwidth of the lower and upper rejection bands can be independently adjusted by changing the size of the band-notched structures. Finally, a UWB antenna is successfully designed with the dual notched bands for the lower WLAN band (5.15{5.35GHz) and upper WLAN band (5.725{5.825GHz). A good impedance match is obtained in 3.1{10.6GHz frequency range (jS11j i5dB). The ratios of the notched bandwidths between i5dB and i10dB in the two stop bands are greater than 0.73.

Dual Band-Notched UWB Antenna based on Electromagnetic Band Gap Structures

A printed ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna with dual band-notched characteristics based on electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) structure is presented. To produce dual-band rejection, the microstrip feed line is placed between two pairs of EBG cells which are designed to act as stop-band filters. The final design of the antenna satisfies the voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) requirement of less than 2.0 in a bandwidth spreading from 2.275 GHz to 10.835 GHz, which entirely covers UWB frequency band allocated from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz. The antenna also shows dual band-notched performance at the frequency bands of 3.375 − 3.875 GHz for WiMAX and 5.325 − 6.150 GHz for WLAN, while possessing omni-directional characteristic in the whole operating frequency band. The results show good agreement between simulation and measurement.

Design of a Dual Band-Notched Ultra-wideband Antenna

In this paper, a printed ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna with dual band-notched characteristics suitable for UWB applications is presented. The proposed antenna, by inserting a pair of line-shaped slots into the radiating patch and adding a pair of C-shaped strips coupled to the microstrip feed line, is designed to realize the dual band-notched characteristics at 3.5 GHz and 5.5 GHz, respectively. Good agreement between the simulated and measured results is obtained, which shows that the proposed antenna has a broad impedance bandwidth ranging from 2.3 to 12.5 GHz with VSWR less than 2.0, except the frequency bands of 3.2–3.8 GHz for WiMAX and 5.0–5.9 GHz for WLAN. Moreover, the nearly omnidirectional radiation patterns and stable gain over the operating frequency band have been obtained, which meet the UWB system requirements.
