Utilization of Vinasse-Molasses in The Finishing Ration on Growth Performance of Peranakan Ongole Cattle

Abstract Vinasse-molasses, the residue of condensed molasses is a co-product of sugar production. It is not reused in manufacturing process and become polluted. However, Its contents of 48-60% of sugar and high in potassium and sulphates. This study was to evaluate Vinasse-molasses utilization as a replacer of molasses in finishing ration on the growth performance of Peranakan Ongole Cattle. A total of 10 Peranakan Ongole cattle (initial body weight of 209 ± 21 kg) were assigned to molasses group or Vinasse-molasses group. The experiment period was lasted 68 days, preceded by 14 days adaptation period. The experimental diet was composed of 20% forage and 80% concentrate containing 15% molasses or Vinasse-molasses. Parameters observed including final body weight (FBW), average daily gain (ADG), total dry matter intake (DMI), forage intake, concentrate intake, feed efficiency (FE), and income over feed cost (IOFC). The Vinasse-molasses reduced (P<0.05) DMI and concentrate intake followed by IOFC increased (P<0.01) of cattle. However, Vinasse-molasses did not affect (P>0.05) FBW, ADG, forage intake, and FE. It can be concluded that Vinasse-molasses can be utilize as feed ingredient to replace molasses in finishing ration to support the sustainability of beef production.

Sows’ preferences for different forage mixtures offered as fresh or dry forage in relation to botanical and chemical composition

Providing forage to feed-restricted pregnant sows may improve their welfare by reducing their high feeding motivation. The aim of this study was to determine sows’ preferences for four forage mixtures cultivated in Canada. Forage mixtures were compared when offered either fresh or dry. The four forage mixtures were composed of different proportions and species of legumes (alfalfa (Alf) or red clover (Clo)) and grasses (tall fescue (F) and/or timothy (T)): (1) Alf-F, (2) Alf-F-T, (3) Clo-T and (4) Clo-F-T. Voluntary intake was measured, and preference tests were carried out for two experiments: one in spring for fresh forages ( n = 8) and the other in autumn for hays ( n = 8) with different sows housed in individual pens and fed a concentrated diet meeting their nutritional requirements for maintenance and foetal growth. Voluntary intake was measured by offering each forage mixture separately (one forage mixture/day) during 90 min according to a 4 × 4 Latin square design replicated four times. During preference tests, all six combinations of two forage mixtures were offered once (one combination/day) for 45 min to each sow. Individual forage intake was measured, and feeding behaviour was observed. Forages were analysed for botanical and chemical composition. Difference in voluntary intake among the four forage mixtures was determined using a variance analysis followed by Tukey tests for post hoc comparisons. In preference tests, differences between the two forage mixtures offered were determined using a paired Student’s t test, and the most ingested forage mixture was considered the preferred one. Results from both experiments revealed clear preferences for some forage mixtures when offered either fresh or dry. Forage mixtures with a greater proportion of legumes (AlfT and CloT) were preferred over forage mixtures with a higher proportion of grasses (AlfFT and CloFT). The AlfFT and CloFT forage mixtures contained at least 30% of fescue; therefore, the greater preference for the AlfT and CloT forage mixtures could also be due to the absence of fescue. Sows preferred forages with low DM and NDF concentrations and high CP and non-structural carbohydrates concentrations. Based on results from previous studies, the preferences seen in the present study are most likely due to the greater proportion of legumes, although an effect of tall fescue in preference cannot be excluded. Therefore, offering forages with a high proportion of legumes would be a good strategy to maximise both fresh and dry forage intake in pregnant sows.

Evaluating equine feeding behavior utilizing GrowSafe Systems: a pilot study.

Equine research and management is limited to single-housing systems if individual animal intake is to be precisely recorded. Even then, dry forage intake is difficult to quantify accurately due to stomping or mixing hay with fecal matter and bedding. In cattle management, GrowSafe Systems (GrowSafe) is a commonly used tool to closely monitor individual animal feeding data using radio frequency identification (RFID) tag technology. Animals are equipped with a unique RFID tag that is read by the feed bunks each time the animal lowers its head into the bunk to consume feed. The objectives of this pilot study were 1) to test the feasibility of use of the GrowSafe system with horses by measuring intake of dry hay and 2) to characterize feeding behaviors of horses in an individually housed (without competition) or group-housed (with competition) setting. To test the hypothesis that horses would consume more hay when individually (NOCOMP) compared to group-housed (COMP), 10 mature Quarter Horses (14 ± 1.5 yr) were placed in one of four pens containing GrowSafe feed bunks in a 4-wk crossover design consisting of two 2-wk treatment periods. Pen 1 contained five horses with access to two GrowSafe bunks (Period 1: n = 4 mares, n = 1 gelding; Period 2: n = 5 geldings); pens 2, 3, and 4 contained one horse each with access to one bunk. Horses were individually fed 0.25% body weight (BW; dry matter [DM] basis) of a commercial concentrate once per day and were allowed Coastal bermudagrass hay in the GrowSafe bunks ad libitum. Although five horses were used in the group-housed (COMP) pen to more closely mimic a true group environment, only data from horses that experienced both housing systems (n = 3 mares and n = 3 geldings) were used for statistical analyses. Hourly (P = 0.008) and daily (P = 0.003) durations of hay feeding were higher for NOCOMP compared to COMP horses, and total daily intake (g DM/kg BW) of NOCOMP horses tended to be greater (P = 0.09) than COMP horses. Conversely, eating rate (g DM/kg BW/min) was greater (P = 0.04) for COMP compared to NOCOMP mares but was unaffected by housing in geldings. The GrowSafe system may provide an opportunity for efficient and effective monitoring of individual horse feed intake and feeding behavior in group-housing situations in horses.

The Physiological Suppressing Factors of Dry Forage Intake and the Cause of Water Intake Following Dry Forage Feeding in Goats - A Review.

The goats raised in the barn are usually fed on fresh grass. As dry forage can be stored for long periods in large amounts, dry forage feeding makes it possible to feed large numbers of goats in barns. This review explains the physiological factors involved in suppressing dry forage intake and the cause of drinking following dry forage feeding. Ruminants consume an enormous amount of dry forage in a short time. Eating rates of dry forage rapidly decreased in the first 40 min of feeding and subsequently declined gradually to low states in the remaining time of the feeding period. Saliva in large-type goats is secreted in large volume during the first hour after the commencement of dry forage feeding. It was elucidated that the marked suppression of dry forage intake during the first hour was caused by a feeding-induced hypovolemia and the loss of NaHCO3 due to excessive salivation during the initial stages of dry forage feeding. On the other hand, it was indicated that the marked decrease in feed intake observed in the second hour of the 2 h feeding period was related to ruminal distension caused by the feed consumed and the copious amount of saliva secreted during dry forage feeding. In addition, results indicate that the marked decreases in dry forage intake after 40 min of feeding are caused by increases in plasma osmolality and subsequent thirst sensations produced by dry forage feeding. After 40 min of the 2 h dry forage feeding period, the feed salt content is absorbed into the rumen and plasma osmolality increases. The combined effects of ruminal distension and increased plasma osmolality accounted for 77.6% of the suppression of dry forage intake 40 min after the start of dry forage feeding. The results indicate that ruminal distension and increased plasma osmolality are the main physiological factors in suppression of dry forage intake in large-type goats. There was very little drinking behavior observed during the first hour of the 2 h feeding period most water consumption occurring in the second hour. The cause of this thirst sensation during the second hour of dry forage feeding period was not hypovolemia brought about by excessive salivation, but rather increases in plasma osmolality due to the ruminal absorption of salt from the consumed feed. This suggests the water intake following dry forage feeding is determined by the level of salt content in the feed.

A method for estimating dry forage intake by sheep using polyethylene glycol as a faecal marker measured with NIRS

In experiments based on ruminants’ individual dry matter intake (DMI) assessment, several external markers can be used to estimate faecal output when total faeces collection is not possible. However, preparation of the markers to be administered and analytical procedures used for marker content determination are time-consuming thus strongly limiting the number of animals involved in the experiments. In this paper, polyethylene glycol (PEG, molecular weight 6000 da) was tested as a faecal marker. Four trials were conducted on dry, non-lactating ewes kept in digestibility crates that allowed individual measurements. The overall experiment was designed to assess the major factors that could lessen the effectiveness of this method, assuming that the use of grab samples of faeces is sufficient. Trial 1 was designed to test two levels of PEG (20 and 40 g/day) administered in two equal amounts. Trial 2 was designed to test the effect of either a single morning (0800 h) dose (20 g/day) or a twice daily administration (0800 and 1600 h) of the same fractionated dose. Trial 3 was designed to test a 20 g/day dose of PEG administered once daily to ewes fed with hays of different qualities: medium (MH) and low (LH). In trial 4, a lower dose of PEG (10 g/day) was administered once a day to ewes fed with fresh oat–vetch forage. It was demonstrated that PEG could be precisely estimated (average prediction error = 3.47 g/kg) with near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS). On the basis of the four trials, it has been proved that PEG administration (20 and 40 g/day) did not significantly affect the DMI of ewes fed dry diets (trials 1, 2 and 3), whereas there was an unexpected increase of DMI for ewes fed exclusively with green feed (trial 4) without DM digestibility modification. Providing PEG as a single dose (0800 h) or split into two equal parts (0800 and 1600 h) did not alter the estimated DMI. Considering the interest of grab sampling, there were clear variations of PEG in faeces with higher concentrations observed at 0800 and 1600 h and lower concentrations at 1400 h. Consequently, with PEG (measured with NIRS) administered once and using the grab sampling procedure (morning collection), it is possible to estimate the DMI of dry feeds with good accuracy. For green feeds, more research is needed as the estimated results are still highly variable.

The Main Suppressing Factors of Dry Forage Intake in Large-type Goats.

In large-type goats that were fed on dry forage twice daily, dry forage intake was markedly suppressed after 40 min of feeding had elapsed. The objective of this study was to determine whether or not marked decreases in dry forage intake after 40 min of feeding are mainly caused by the two factors, that is, ruminal distension and increased plasma osmolality induced thirst produced by dry forage feeding. Six large-type male esophageal- and ruminal-fistulated goats (crossbred Japanese Saanen/Nubian, aged 2 to 6 years, weighing 85.1±4.89 kg) were used in two experiments. The animals were fed ad libitum a diet of roughly crushed alfalfa hay cubes for 2 h from 10:00 to 12:00 am during two experiments. Water was withheld during feeding in both experiments but was available for a period of 30 min after completion of the 2 h feeding period. In experiment 1, saliva lost via the esophageal fistula was replenished by an intraruminal infusion of artificial parotid saliva (RIAPS) in sham feeding conditions (SFC) control, and the treatment was maintained under normal feeding conditions (NFC). In experiment 2, a RIAPS and non-insertion of a balloon (RIAPS-NB) control was conducted in the same manner as the SFC control of experiment 1. The intraruminal infusion of hypertonic solution and insertion of a balloon (RIHS-IB) treatment was carried out simultaneously to reproduce the effects of changing salt content and ruminal distension due to feed entering the rumen. The results of experiment 1 showed that due to the effects of multiple dry forage suppressing factors when feed boluses entered the rumen, eating rates in the NFC treatment decreased (p<0.05) after 40 min of feeding and cumulative dry forage intake for the 2 h feeding period reduced to 43.8% of the SFC control (p<0.01). The results of experiment 2 indicated that due to the two suppressing factors of ruminal distension and increased plasma osmolality induced thirst, eating rates in the RIHS-IB treatment were, as observed under NFC, reduced (p<0.05) and cumulative dry forage intake for the 2 h feeding period decreased to 34.0% of the RIAPS-NB control (p<0.01). The combined effects of ruminal distension and increased plasma osmolality accounted for 77.5% of the suppression of dry forage intake 40 min after the start of dry forage feeding. The results indicate that ruminal distension and increased plasma osmolality induced thirst are the main factors in the suppression of dry forage intake in large-type goats.

Plasma Osmolality Controls Dry Forage Intake in Large-type Goats

In large-type goats that were fed on dry forage twice daily, dry forage intake was markedly suppressed after 40 min of feeding had elapsed. The objective of this study was to clarify whether or not increases in plasma osmolality and subsequent thirst sensations produced by dry forage feeding suppress dry forage intake. Eight large-type male esophageal- and ruminal-fistulated goats (crossbred Japanese Saanen/Nubian, aged 3 to 6 years, weighing 72.3±2.74 kg) were used in two experiments conducted under sham feeding conditions. The animals were fed ad libitum a diet of roughly crushed alfalfa hay cubes for 2 h from 10:00 to 12:00 h during two experiments. Water was withheld during feeding in both experiments but was available for a period of 30 min after completion of the 2 h feeding period. In experiment 1, an intraruminal infusion of artificial parotid saliva (RIAPS) in the control replenished saliva lost via the esophageal fistula and an intraruminal infusion of hypertonic solution (RIHS) in the treatment was carried out in order to reproduce the effects of changing salt content due to feed entering the rumen. In experiment 2, the RIHS control was conducted in the same manner as the RIHS treatment of experiment 1. The treatment group consisted of RIHS-with an intravenous infusion of artificial mixed saliva (VIAMS) treatment that was carried out for 3 h to prevent increases in plasma osmolality during feeding. The results of the RIHS treatment in experiment 1 showed that ruminal fluid osmolality increased and then an increase in plasma osmolality was observed. This resulted in the production of thirst sensations and the reduction of cumulative dry forage intake to 43.3% (p<0.05) of the RIAPS control. The results of the RIHS-VIAMS treatment in experiment 2 indicated that ruminal fluid osmolality was the same as the RIHS control but plasma osmolality significantly decreased, and thirst level was markedly reduced. This caused a significant increase of 31.4% (p<0.05) in cumulative dry forage intake in the RIHS-VIAMS treatment compared to the RIHS control. These results indicate that increases in ruminal fluid osmolality during dry forage feeding indirectly suppresses dry forage intake by causing an increase in plasma osmolality and subsequently inducing thirst sensations. The results of the present study suggest that marked decreases in dry forage intake after 40 min of feeding are caused by increases in plasma osmolality and subsequent thirst sensations produced by dry forage feeding. Salivary Secretion Volume Related Ruminal Distension and Suppression of Dry Forage Intake in Large-type Goats

Two experiments under sham feeding conditions were conducted to determine whether or not ruminal distension brought about by feed boluses entering the rumen is a factor in the marked suppression of feed intake after 40 min of feeding. In experiment 1, a comparison was made between the intraruminal insertion of a water filled balloon (RIB) treatment and normal control (non-insertion of a balloon, NIB). In experiment 2, saliva lost due to sham feeding conditions was replenished via an intraruminal infusion of iso-osmotic artificial saliva. A comparison of dry forage intake was then conducted between the intraruminal replenishment of iso-osmotic artificial saliva and insertion of a balloon (RRIAS-RIB) treatment, and the intraruminal replenishment of iso-osmotic artificial saliva and non-insertion of a balloon (RRIAS-NIB) control. In experiment 1, eating rates in the RIB treatment 30 min after the commencement of feeding tended to be lower than those in the NIB control. Deprivation of Esophageal Boluses and Dry Forage Intake in Large-type Goats

In goats fed on dry forage twice a day, an esophageal fistula was used to investigate the physiological factors present in the marked suppression of dry forage intake that occurs after 40 min of feeding. The animals used in this study were five large-type male esophageal- and ruminal-fistulated goats. Roughly crushed alfalfa hay cubes with any large remaining chunks removed were used as feed for this research. The study was conducted under both normal feeding conditions (NFC) and sham feeding conditions (SFC). In the NFC control, the esophageal fistulae were closed by plugs and the animals ate dry forage in the normal manner. In the SFC treatment, before starting the experiment the plugs for closing the esophageal fistula were removed and the cannulae for collecting boluses were fitted into the fistulae. Therefore, the esophageal boluses were removed via an esophageal fistula before they entered the rumen. In the NFC control, eating rates sharply decreased in the first 40 min of feeding and were subsequently maintained at low levels. However, eating rates in the SFC treatment remained high after 40 min of the feeding period had elapsed and the goats ate continuously during the 2 h feeding period. In comparison with the NFC control (1,794±203.80 g/2 h), cumulative dry forage intake in the SFC treatment (3,182±381.69 g/2 h) was 77.4% greater (p<0.05) upon conclusion of the 2 h feeding period. In the SFC treatment, cumulative bolus output (6,804±469.92 g/2 h) was about twofold the cumulative dry forage intake due to cumulative salivary secretion volume (3,622±104.13 g/2 h) upon conclusion of the 2 h feeding period. The result indicates that large amounts of secreted saliva during dry forage feeding act in conjunction with consumed feed to form the ruminal load responsible for ruminal distension. The increased plasma total protein concentrations were higher in the SFC treatment than in the NFC control. However, plasma and ruminal fluid osmolalities increased in the NFC control during and after feeding but were mostly unchanged in the SFC treatment. In comparison with the NFC control (3,440±548.04 g/30 min), thirst level in the SFC treatment (1,360±467.02 g/30 min) was 60.5% significantly less (p<0.05) upon conclusion of the 30 min drinking period. The results of the present study indicate that in the second hour of the 2 h feeding period, dry forage intake is regulated by factors produced when boluses enter the rumen. An intravenous replenishment of salivary components decrease water intake and increases feed intake in freely drinking large-type goats fed on dry forage

This research utilized two treatments to investigate if feed intake is reduced by changes in humoral factors induced by dry forage feeding in large-type goats given free access to water. In the control treatment (NI), a solution was not infused. The artificial parotid saliva i.v. infusion (ASI) treatment consisted of an i.v. infusion of artificial parotid saliva in order to replenish NaHCO3 and fluids lost from the blood to the rumen due to increased saliva secretion volume during initial stages of dry forage feeding. The ASI treatment significantly mitigated the decreases in circulating plasma volume caused by saliva secretion. Thirst was lower in the ASI-treated group, as indicated by the lower water intake (NI, 3894 mL 2 h-1; ASI, 3100 mL 2 h-1). Decreases with time in dry forage intake were significantly reduced by the ASI treatment (2134g 2 h-1) compared with the NI control (1756 g 2 h-1). These results indicate that under free drinking conditions, dry forage intake of large-type goats may likely be suppressed by the decrease in plasma volume and increase in water intake following saliva secretion during the initial stages of feeding. An Intravenous Replenishment of Salivary Components and Dry Forage Intake in Freely Drinking Large-type Goats

Large-type goats eating dry forage secreted large volumes of saliva which resulted in the loss of NaHCO 3 from the blood and decreased plasma volume (hypovolemia). This research investigated whether or not the loss of NaHCO 3 from the blood and hypovolemia brought about by dry forage feeding actually depresses feed intake in large-type goats under free drinking conditions. The present experiment consisted of three treatments (NI, ASI, MI). All treatments in this experiment were carried out under free drinking conditions. In the NI control (NI), a solution was not infused. In the ASI treatment, i.v. infusion of artificial saliva was initiated 2 h before feeding and was continued for a total of 3 h concluding 1 h after the commencement of the feeding perod. In the MI treatment, mannitol solution was infused to replenish only water lost from the blood in the form of saliva. The hematocrit and plasma total protein concentrations during feeding in the NI control were observed to be higher than pre-feeding levels. This indicated that dry forage feeding-induced hypovolemia was caused by the accelerated secretion of saliva during the initial stages of feeding in freely drinking large-type goats. Increases in hematocrit and plasma total protein concentrations due to dry forage feeding were significantly suppressed by the ASI treatment. While hematocrit during feeding in the MI treatment was significantly lower than the NI control, plasma total protein concentrations were not different. From these results, it is clear that the MI treatment was less effective than the ASI treatment in mitigating the decreases in plasma volume brought about by dry forage feeding. This indicates that plasma volume increased during dry forage feeding in the ASI treatment which inhibited production of angiotensin II in the blood. The ASI treatment lessened the levels of suppression on dry forage feeding, but the MI treatment had no effect on it under free drinking conditions. The results indicate that despite the free drinking conditions, increases in saliva secretion during the initial stages of dry forage feeding in large-type goats caused NaHCO 3 to be lost from the blood into the rumen which in turn caused a decrease in circulating plasma volume and resulted in activation of the renin-angiotensin system and thus feeding was suppressed.

Recria de novilhos mestiços em pastagem de Brachiaria brizantha, com diferentes níveis de suplementação, na região Amazônica. Consumo e parâmetros ruminais

O objetivo neste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes níveis de suplementação sobre o consumo de matéria seca e as alterações no pH e teores de amônia ruminal de novilhos recriados a pasto, durante o período de transição águas-seca entre os meses de abril e junho de 2003. Foram utilizados cinco novilhos fistulados no rúmen, com 15 meses de idade e peso inicial médio de 271 kg, em um esquema de quadrado latino 5 x 5. Os tratamentos consistiram no fornecimento de suplementos nas quantidades de 0,125; 0,25; 0,5; e 1,0% do peso vivo e controle. Todos os suplementos foram à base de milho e farelo de soja, com 24% de proteína bruta. O consumo voluntário foi determinado pela relação entre a quantidade de matéria seca fecal excretada, medida pelo uso de um indicador externo, o óxido crômico, e de um indicador interno, a fibra em detergente ácido indigestível. O consumo de matéria seca de forragem foi influenciado pelos níveis de suplementação. Os animais do grupo controle apresentaram maior consumo de matéria seca (9,27 kg/dia), não havendo diferença entre os demais níveis de suplementação. A redução do consumo de forragem foi mais evidenciada para o nível de fornecimento de 1,0% PV (1,95% PV), sem alterações no ganho de peso dos animais. Observou-se, então, a ocorrência de efeitos substitutivos e aditivos simultaneamente, proporcionando aumento da capacidade de suporte de 16, 25, 27 e 32%, para os níveis de suplementação de 0,125; 0,25; 0,5 e 1,0%PV. Os valores de pH para todos os tratamentos apresentaram estabilidade, com valores superiores ao limite estipulado para a inibição da digestibilidade da fibra. Os teores de amônia ruminal nos animais suplementados mantiveram-se acima do limite de 10 mg/dL, para maximizar o crescimento microbiano e a digestibilidade ruminal em condições tropicais.

Changes in single unit activity in the lateral hypothalamic areaof goats during feeding1

In order to clarify the location of feeding centers in the ruminant brain, this study used a single-unit activity (SUA) recording electrode to investigate the existence of appetite-regulating neurons in the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) in goats. Seven male Japanese Saanen goats were used in the experiment. The animals were fed twice daily, once in the morning (1000 to 1200) with 1.5 kg of roughly crushed alfalfa hay cubes, and once in the afternoon (1600 to 1800) with 200 g of commercial ground concentrate feed. The animals were allowed free access to drinking water. In this study, the animals were surgically operated on to position the recording electrode in the LHA. Recordings of SUA were carried out continuously over a 2.25-h period beginning 15 min prior to the commencement of morning feeding. The eating rates of crushed alfalfa hay cubes were highest 10 min after feeding commencement, but decreased sharply by the time 40 min had elapsed. The cumulative feed intake after the completion of the 2-h feeding period was 1164 +/- 38 g. The cumulative water intake upon the conclusion of the 2-h feeding period was 2422 +/- 107 mL. This study recorded 31 units, of which five showed a response to feeding and altered their firing rates. In response to a sharp increase in eating rates, all five units increased their firing rates to a level higher than that of prefeeding (P < 0.05). As the animals reached a level of satiety (eating rates declined to very low levels), firing of units I and II stopped completely, while the firing rates of units III, IV, and V decreased. Examination of a serial histological section confirmed that the five units in which changes in firing rates with feeding were observed were all located in the dorsolateral hypothalamic area close to the fornix. The LHA neurons recorded in this experiment characteristically showed neuronal activity increases at high levels of feeding, but decreases at low levels. The results suggest that there are cells located in the LHA of goats that are active in the physiological regulation of hay (dry forage) intake.

Effect of Parotid Saliva Secretion on Dry Forage Intake in Goats

Research was carried out to clarify whether a suppression of dry forage intake during the early stages of feeding in ruminants is caused by feeding induced hypovolemia which is produced by the accelerated secretion of parotid saliva. Goats with a parotid fistula were fed roughly crushed alfalfa hay cubes, commercial ground concentrate feed and NaHCO 3 twice daily (10:00-12:00, 16:00-18:00). The animals were free access to drinking water all day prior to, during and after experiments. The animals were intraruminally infused every day prior to the morning feeding period with parotid saliva collected from the parotid fistula over a 24 h period. The present experiment consisted of two treatments, non-infusion (RNI) and intraruminal infusion of parotid saliva (RSF). In the RSF treatment, 4-5 kg of parotid saliva (280-290 mOsm/l) collected over a 24 h period was intraruminally infused 1 h prior to the commencement of the morning feeding. During feeding, eating and parotid saliva secretion rates were measured. Blood samples were also periodically collected from the jugular vein. During and after 2 h feeding, water intakes were measured, respectively. These measurements were used to define thirst levels. It is thought that rumen fill in the RSF treatment was higher than the RNI treatment. Plasma osmolality in the RSF treatment increased in the first half of the 2 h feeding period due to the intraruminal infusion of parotid saliva. Therefore, parotid saliva secretion rates in the RSF treatment were lower than the RNI treatment for 30 min period from 30 to 60 min after the commencement of feeding. On the other hand, plasma total protein concentration and hematocrit in the RSF treatment decreased by 3.2 and 3.3% prior to the commencement of feeding due to the intraruminal infusion of parotid saliva. In the first half of the 2 h feeding period, plasma total protein concentration and hematocrit in the RSF treatment showed a tendency to decrease compared to the RNI treatment. Thirst level in the RSF treatment during feeding was approximately 31.3% less than the RNI treatment. Upon the completion of the 2 h feeding period, cumulative feed intake in the RSF treatment was significantly larger (19.7%) than the RNI treatment. The results suggest that a suppression of dry forage intake during the early stages of feeding in goats is partly caused by feeding induced hypovolemia, which is produced by the accelerated secretion of parotid saliva.

Effects of Intraruminal Saliva Flow on Feed Intake in Goats Fed on Alfalfa Hay Cubes

Research was carried out to ascertain whether or not the volume of saliva flowing into the rumen regulates dry forage intake in ruminants. Goats with a parotid fistula were fed roughly crushed alfalfa hay cubes, concentrated beef cattle feed and NaHCO3 twice daily (10:00-12:00, 16:00-18:00). Except for the days on which experiments were conducted, the animals were free access to drinking water. The animals were intraruminally infused every day prior to the morning feeding period with parotid saliva collected from the parotid fistula over a 24 h period. The present experiment consisted of three treatments, non-infusion (NI), intraruminal infusion of parotid saliva (RSI), and intraruminal infusion of warm water (RWI). In the RSI treatment, approximately 4-5 kg of parotid saliva (280-290 mOsm/l) collected over a 24 h period was intraruminally infused 1 h prior to the commencement of morning feeding. In the RWI treatment, parotid saliva was substituted for warm water (36°C). After infusions, the animals were fed on roughly crushed alfalfa hay cubes for 2 h. During feeding, eating and saliva secretion rates were measured. Blood samples were also periodically collected from the jugular vein. After 2 h feeding, water intake was measured for 30 min. These measurements were used to define thirst levels. On the day of the experiment, the animals were not access to drinking water during the morning feeding. It is thought that rumen fill in RSI and RWI treatments was higher than the NI treatment. In comparison with the NI treatment however, cumulative feed intake increased by 39.3% with RSI treatment and by 45.9% with RWI treatment after completion of the 2 h feeding period. After 2 h feeding, thirst level in the RSI treatment showed only a 10% decrease compared to the NI treatment, but thirst level in the RWI treatment decreased 49.8%. Despite the significant differences in thirst levels between RSI and RWI treatments, the cumulative feed intake in both treatments was similar. When comparing accumulated saliva secretion volumes 2 h after feeding, volumes in the RSI treatment were significantly 35.9% lower than the NI treatment while volumes in the RWI treatment were unchanged. However, the volumes of saliva and fluid flowing into the rumen were greater in both RSI and RWI treatments when compared to the NI treatment. The results indicate that the amount of saliva flowing into the rumen is a factor regulating feed intake in ruminants fed on dry forage. (Asian-Aust. J. Anim. Sci. 2002. Vol 15, No. 12 : 1738-1746)

Consumo e produção de leite de vacas mestiças em pastagem de Brachiaria decumbens manejada sob duas ofertas diárias de forragem

Este trabalho foi conduzido, no período de dezembro/95 a fevereiro/96, com o objetivo de avaliar a produção de leite de vacas mestiças em pastagem de Brachiaria decumbens, sob duas ofertas diárias de forragem 4 e 8 kg de matéria seca de forragem verde (MSFV)/100 kg de peso vivo dos animais. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, sendo que a produção de leite, corrigida a 4% de gordura, foi analisada por covariância. Por ocasião do primeiro e segundo ciclos de pastejo, observaram-se disponibilidades de 4392±974 e 2598±591 kg/ha de MSFV, respectivamente, não sendo observado efeito das pressões de pastejo adotadas na quantidade de forragem disponível ao início do segundo ciclo de pastejo. Os teores de proteína bruta (9,5%) e fibra em detergente neutro (70,1%) e os valores de digestibilidade in vitro da matéria seca (56,4%) não foram influenciados pelas ofertas de forragem, embora os dados evidenciassem tendência de maiores teores de proteína e menores teores de FDN nas amostras de forragem dos piquetes que foram pastejados segundo a menor oferta de forragem. O consumo médio diário de matéria seca, 12,4 kg/vaca, e a produção de leite, cuja média foi de 11,0 kg/vaca.dia, não foram afetados pelas ofertas de pasto estudadas.

Food intake, milk production and growth of kids of local, multipurpose goats grazing on dry season natural Sahelian rangeland in Mali

AbstractA study was carried out in the dry season, from October 1993 to May 1994 at an institutional farm in Niono (14º5’N, 6ºE, 295 m), on the Sahelian border of Mali with a semi-arid climate. Thirty-four local Sahelian goats in their first to fifth lactation weighing about 27 kg were used. Eleven of them suckled twin and 23 suckled single kids. The does were herded on natural rangeland for 8 to 9 h/day and received no food supplements. Dry season forage mass, intake and nutritive value of diets selected by goats, milk yield and effects on kids’ growth were measured.The vegetation cover consisted of a herbaceous stratum dominated by annual gramineae plants and a woody stratum composed of 26 species of plants, whose relative abundance varied according to the topography and soil type. The goats spent between 0·126 (early dry season) and 0·004 (late dry season) of grazing time on herbaceous cover and the remaining time on consuming leaves, flowers and fruits of woody plants. The phytomass decreased as the dry season advanced. However, nutrient intake was relatively constant during the course of the study period, as the goats compensated for low biomass by walking more and grazing larger areas and for longer periods. On average, goats selected diets with 121 g crude protein and 7·6 MJ metabolizable energy per kg dry matter.The milk yield and milk fat were measured weekly for 29 weeks but data for only 12 weeks are interpreted and discussed. Mean daily actual and fat-corrected milk (40 g fat per kg milk) production for the first 12 weeks of lactation was 692 (s.e. 139) g and 627 (s.e. 73) g respectively. The milk yield was maximum in the 1st week of lactation followed by a gradual decline. Milk yield was affected by litter size, number of lactation, weight and age of does at parturition. The does with twin kids produced significantly more milk (762 (s.e. 110) g/day) than the does with singles (656 (s.e. 158) g/day) (P &lt; 0·05). The milk yield increased from the first lactation (542 (s.e. 49) g/day) to the third lactation (739 (s.e. 49) g/day) (P &lt; 0·05) with no difference between the third and fifth lactation. Does over 27 kg produced more milk than those under 27 kg (P &lt; 0·001) and does over 2·5 years produced more milk than younger does (P &lt; 0·01). Milk fat was inversely related to milk production. Kids born as singles were heavier (2194 (s.e. 76) g) than those born as twins (1966 (s.e. 78) g) (P &lt; 0·05). The kid growth rate was affected by birth weight (P &lt; 0·001) and milk yield of dams (P &lt; 0·01). Within litter size (single or twins), sex had no significant effect on the growth rate of kids, however the singles grew faster than twins (P &lt; 0·001) throughout the 12 weeks of measurement. Single kids were 1·41 times as heavy as twins at 12 weeks.It is concluded that, the milk yield of does and weight gain of kids under the precarious feeding conditions of the study indicate that the local goats monitored were adapted to local harsh conditions. Nutrition has been regarded as the main constraint to goat production from the range in the dry season. Further specific studies are needed to overcome the dry season nutritional stress and to improve goat production.

Predicting beef cattle stocking rates and live weight gains on Eastern Oregon rangelands: Description of a model

A simple deterministic model was developed to predict animal unit months (AUM's) and live weight gains of beef cattle grazing specific range types in eastern Oregon. The model can provide values for 3 levels of spatial resolution (pasture, mapping unit, and slope/ proximity to water "cells" within map ping units) and 5 monthly periods from May 15 to October 14. Operation of the model begins by calculating forage availability as a factor of forage biomass, usable acres, and desired forage utiliza tion. Grazing capacity (AUM's) is calculated by comparing forage availabil ity with the dry matter forage requirement of a 1,000 lb animal unit for 30 days. Live weight gains are calculated by comparing forage availability to dry matter forage intake, crude protein intake, and digestible energy intake of yearling heifers. The model can be used in planning range improvements and coordinating livestock management with other rangeland activities.
