Tukad Bindu, a river tourism site in Denpasar, Bali, attracts a significant number of domestic tourists. However, it currently lacks a well-defined strategic plan for sustainable development, which is crucial for establishing it as a competitive tourist destination in Denpasar City. This study aims to identify the development potential along Tukad Bindu, Denpasar, Bali, using qualitative methods and SWOT analysis. The research primarily focuses on river revitalization as a catalyst for tourism, enhancing agricultural productivity, tourist attractions, and fostering active community involvement. The findings suggest that the SO (Strengths-Opportunities) strategy can be employed by maintaining river revitalization as a key driver for tourism while also boosting agricultural productivity and tourist attractions. The ST (Strengths-Threats) strategy involves empowering the community through active participation to mitigate potential threats. The WO (Weaknesses-Opportunities) strategy is facilitated by providing educational programs through the Denpasar City Environmental Service to the surrounding community. Meanwhile, the WT (Weaknesses-Threats) strategy underscores the importance of collaboration with the government and private sector to improve tourism promotion, develop cultural and agricultural tourism attractions, and ensure the sustainability of future programs. This study recommends the adoption of these strategies as concrete steps to fully leverage the development potential around Tukad Bindu, Denpasar, Bali. The successful implementation of these strategies is anticipated to positively impact tourism, agriculture, and the welfare of the local community.

Visitor’s Perception towards Event Management in Kathmandu Valley

Background: Events are significant drivers of tourism and play a key role in the development and marketing of destinations. In Kathmandu Valley, the increasing trend of event organization has raised questions about visitor perceptions toward event management. However, no previous study has explored this topic in Nepal. Objective: The study aims to analyze visitor perceptions of event management in Kathmandu Valley, focusing on how affective engagement influences these perceptions and identifying areas for improvement. Method: An exploratory research design was adopted to uncover the realities of visitor perceptions. Quantitative data was collected from 343 respondents and analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed to examine the relationships between variables. Result: The study found that affective engagement significantly impacts visitor perceptions. Attendees expect high-quality service from event companies and are likely to share their experiences on social media platforms like Facebook. Most respondents were between the ages of 21-30, indicating a strong youth interest in event attendance. The analysis revealed that one independent variable, affective engagement, had a significant effect on one hypothesis related to contingent factors, while another hypothesis was rejected. Conclusion: Event management companies in Kathmandu Valley should prioritize affective engagement, addressing attendees' emotions and feelings. Enhancing internal management practices can lead to better service delivery, addressing common issues such as overcrowding, location, and security. Additionally, adopting modern technologies could further attract and satisfy attendees, improving overall event experiences. What Is Leading Destinations Towards Inclusivity? Analysis of Accessible Tourism Drivers from a Stakeholders’ Perspective

ABSTRACT This research examines the factors driving the development of accessibility in tourist destinations and interprets them within the Weber’s theoretical framework on types of rationality. To do so, a Stakeholder Analysis with the testimony of accessible tourism stakeholders has been conducted by means of 83 in-depth interviews. Both formal and substantive rationality play a key role in the development of Accessible Tourism. That is to say, the motivation of the tourism industry towards promoting accessibility is not only economic but also grounded in moral values (substantive rationality). Formal rationality underlies one of the most significant drivers: the certification of a Smart Tourist Destination, as it generates a public–private synergy that significantly drives accessibility. Unlike previous works, this research has unraveled a diversity of explicit and tacit alliances among actors within a “favorable climate” towards accessible tourism, as well as some types of social conflicts that even stimulate its development.

Data collection techniques are carried out through observation, interviews and documentation. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods. In this research, it can be seen how the communication process carried out by Uda Uni Duta Wisata in the Goes To School work program is carried out to promote tourism and preserve customs and culture in the city of Padang, developing information that is packaged through socialization or through social media. the effectiveness of using Uda Uni as a tourist ambassador for the city of Padang as a tourism, customs and culture role model who is able to become an extension of the government, to assist the government in increasing public knowledge about tourism and increasing tourist visits to the city of Padang. By sending uda uni as one of the tourism drivers, it can make it easier for the public to reach information through work programs carried out by uda uni Padang city, both physically through outreach and through the media. From this research, it can be seen how communication from Uda Uni Padang City Tourism Ambassadors socializes so that the public can receive information well.

Planning strategy for Tukad Bindu destination as a tourist Attraction in Denpasar city

Tukad Bindu is one on the river-based tourist attractions in Denpasar Bali which has been visited by domestic tourists. However, it has not got a well planning strategy to establish this tourism sites sustainably and become a competitive destination in Denpasar City. This research aims to identify the development potential along Tukad Bindu, Denpasar, Bali, using qualitative methods and applying SWOT analysis. The research location focused on the revitalization of the river as a driver of tourism and increased agricultural productivity, tourist attractions, and active community participation. The results showed that the S-O (Strengths-Opportunity) strategy can be applied by preserving river revitalization as a carrying capacity for tourism while increasing agricultural productivity and tourist attractions. The S-T (Strengths-Threats) strategy can be done by empowering the community through active participation to overcome potential threats. The W-O (weaknesses-opportunities) strategy involves providing education and counselling through the Denpasar City Environment Agency to local communities. Meanwhile, the W-T (Weaknesses-Threats) strategy emphasizes cooperation with the government and the private sector to increase tourism promotion, develop cultural agricultural attractions, and maintain the sustainability of the program in the future. This research recommends the implementation of these strategies as concrete steps in maximizing the development potential around Tukad Bindu, Denpasar, and Bali. The implementation of these strategies is expected to have a positive impact on tourism, agriculture, and the welfare of the local community.

Sustainable Wildlife Tourism Management and Influence of Levels of Community Engagement: A Study of Wildlife Conservancies in Kajiado County, Kenya

Wildlife is a significant driver of tourism, and in conservancies, the relationship between community engagement and sustainable wildlife tourism management is crucial for balancing biodiversity conservation with the socioeconomic benefits of tourism. This study investigated how levels of community engagement (directive, consultative, and participative) influence sustainable wildlife tourism management in Kajiado County, Kenya, and to identify barriers to effective community involvement. Qualitative data were gathered through interviews with 1 representative each from county and national governments as well as the Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association. Quantitative data were collected via paper-based, closed-ended survey questionnaires administered to 29 conservancy managers and 29 community leaders. A purposive sampling technique was used to select all respondents. The qualitative data were analyzed thematically, while the quantitative data were subjected to descriptive and inferential analysis. This study was grounded on the Community-Based Natural Resource Management Theory and the Stakeholder Theory. The results revealed limited community involvement in decision-making regarding wildlife tourism management, with directive and consultative forms of engagement being more common than participative approaches. Directive and consultative engagement, which either exclude community input or limit it to advisory roles without decision-making power, were found to hinder meaningful community participation in sustainable wildlife tourism management. In contrast, participative engagement, where communities actively contribute to decisions, proved more effective in promoting biodiversity conservation, reducing human-wildlife conflicts, and enhancing the wellbeing of local communities. The study recommends enforcing legislation for community inclusion in wildlife tourism and conservation decisions by national and county governments, prioritizing local participation in tourism related decisions by wildlife conservancies in Kajiado, strengthening community engagement policies through advocacy by the Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association, and investing in capacity-building initiatives for effective community engagement.

Medical Tourism in the Region of Crete, Greece: Perspectives from Healthcare Providers, Hotel Managers, and Medical Tourists

Medical tourism is a rapidly growing sector, and could become a major driver of tourism in Greece. This research examines the status quo and the potential of medical tourism on the island of Crete, Greece. A cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2021 to February 2022, with the administration of questionnaires. The study involved the participation of 97 hotel managers from four- and five-star hotels, 515 doctors representing various specialties, and 890 medical tourists. Hotel managers overwhelmingly (90+%) believe that medical tourism can significantly contribute to the domestic economy, as well as that the domestic market is ready for the provision of medical tourism services on a larger scale, while more than 70% of the tourists asked would be interested in travelling to Greece to receive medical treatment. IVF, eye surgery, and dental services are the ones that would interest tourists the most, which are also aligned with the services commonly provided by the doctors questioned. Thus, according to the perspectives of doctors, hotel managers, and tourists, medical tourism has the capacity to grow significantly and contribute to the development of the Greek economy. The government should assume a supportive role, facilitating medical tourism processes by addressing the administrative, financial, and promotional aspects.

Economic and non-economic drivers of tourism: bidirectional causality of tourism and environment for South Asian economies.

This study explores the relationship between economic growth, tourism, and the environment in South Asian economies. It finds that factors such as GDP, human capital, globalization, and financial risk are interconnected and have long-term associations in these countries. The study employs various methodologies and tests to analyze the data. The author employs novel panel methodologies such as the method of moment of quantile regression analysis, slope heterogeneity, cross-section dependence test, and Westerlund cointegration. Additionally, a causality test along with the latest unit-root test is used. The results reveal important findings. As GDP expands, its impact on international tourism diminishes at higher quantiles, suggesting a decreasing effect. However, GDP still contributes positively to tourism across all quantiles. Human capital has a stronger effect on attracting tourists at lower quantiles, while globalization has varying impacts depending on the level of globalization in a country. Financial risk has a greater negative impact on tourism in larger economies compared to smaller ones. The study also examines the relationship between CO2 emissions and the variables under investigation. It finds that the effect of GDP on emissions decreases at higher quantiles, indicating a smaller contribution. Human capital has a larger effect on reducing emissions at lower quantiles, while the impact of globalization is more significant at higher quantiles. Moreover, an increase in financial risk leads to a decrease in emissions, particularly at lower quantiles. Based on these findings, the study suggests policy recommendations for South Asian economies. These include promoting sustainable tourism practices, investing in human capital development, encouraging responsible globalization, mitigating financial risks, and aligning tourism strategies with sustainable development goals.

Population status and anthropogenic disturbances of forest elephants (Loxodonta cyclotis Matschie, 1900) in Nki National park and its environs, east region, Cameroon

African elephants play important roles in both the natural and human worlds: ecologically as a keystone species, economically as drivers of tourism and culturally as icons of the African continent. Increasingly, elephant populations are threatened by poaching for ivory, human-elephant conflict, habitat loss and fragmentation, and isolation of populations. This study was carried out to estimate the population of forest elephants and determine the human threats to their population. Data was collected along eleven 2 Km line transects and reconnaissance walk as well as administration of semi-structured questionnaires. Results obtained indicated a mean dung pile of 6.0 boli/Km2. Elephant density, thus, was 0.14 elephant/km2, translated to 428 (217-897) individual elephants. The main threats on elephant population with their percentage acceptance were identified to be non-respect of law enforcement (94.4%), hunting for bushmeat (92.5%), hunting for ivory (91.6%), lack of a management plan (73.8%), logging (68.2%) and road construction (43.0%). It was therefore concluded that there is a reduction in elephant population in the park from 565 in 2015 to 428 in 2021. Thus, it is recommended that increased law enforcement, surveillance and the setting up of constant and long-term monitoring programs be carried out in the park.

The Planning and Establishment Challenges of an Urban Ecotourism Destination in South Africa

Ecotourism is a major driver of tourism in rural, usually remote peripheral regions in several African countries including South Africa. The aim in this paper is to examine the planning and establishment challenges which surround the development of an urban ecotourism project in South Africa. The research focuses on the Dinokeng Game Reserve which is geographically located on the boundary of one of South Africa’s major metropolitan areas and situated in the country’s economic heartland. This ecotourism project offers a new niche product for urban tourism development. Using documentary sources as well as original interview material the paper analyses the key steps in the planning of this innovative urban tourism product. The study contributes to the growing tourism geography scholarship of South Africa and to the broader international literature on the role of distinctive niche products in urban tourism development in the Global South

The relationship between tourism and the environment in Florida, USA: A media content analysis

The existence of trade-offs between continued tourism growth and environmental protection are apparent in Florida, where tourism-dependent economies are reliant on natural resources as key attractions. We analyze Florida newspaper articles covering tourism to determine how tourism issues are framed in public discourse, including discussion of tourism's drivers, effects and outcomes. We examine how complex trade-offs are (or are not) acknowledged. The overarching discourse frame describes a tourism-based economy reliant on environmental quality, which is threatened by other industries. Tourism is presented as providing economic incentives for environmental protection, with minimal discussion of tourism's potential environmental costs. Results reveal a simplistic discourse failing to acknowledge management challenges facing the state or meaningfully assess tourism's role in environmental protection or degradation.

OPTIMALISASI PERAN POKDARWIS DALAM PENGELOLAAN EKOWISATA DI DESA KARANG SIDEMEN KABUPATEN LOMBOK TENGAH

One of the villages that has developed the ecotourism concept is Karang Sidemen Village, North Batukliang District, Central Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara. The destinations in Karang Sidemen Village are managed by the Selendang Biru Rinjani Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis). This Pokdarwis has been active since 2018. Pokdarwis in its function as a subject or community actor has a role and responsibility to jointly encourage the success of tourism management in Karang Sidemen Village which is now a pilot tourism village. However, the quality of Human Resources (HR) services in Karang Sidemen Village is still minimal, especially Pokdarwis as a tourism driver. The purpose of this study is to describe the optimization of the role of Pokdarwis as an effort to manage the ecotourism potential of Karang Sidemen Village. The method used in this research is a qualitative approach. Qualitative narrative is obtained from field research. Data collection techniques by means of observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis technique used is SOAR analysis. Based on the research conducted, the results obtained are strategies for optimizing the role of Pokdarwis Selendang Biru Rinjani as an effort to manage ecotourism potential in Karang Sidemen Village, including conducting service quality training for Pokdarwis members, collaborating with well-known social media to promote promotions, collaborating to apply seven categories of assessment in ADWI regularly participates in various trainings outside of Pokdarwis, and optimizes Karang Sidemen Village in holding the title of Tourism Village.

Planning and Designing the Convention Center in Sibolga City with a Neo-Vernacular Architectural Approach

MICE is one of the drivers of tourism that can impact economic development in an area. Sibolga has the potential to become a MICE tourist destination because of its natural beauty, rich in historical and cultural heritage. However, the meeting facilities in Sibolga could not accommodate many people, thus requiring a convention center to accommodate the rapidly growing population without leaving any cultural characteristics there. A convention center is a place for people as usual groups (politicians, business people, scholars, and so on) can share knowledge and discuss a problem, new information, and interest. The design of this convention center aims to become a gathering center for visitors to seek information about things in Sibolga and its surroundings. In addition, the use of neo-vernacular architecture in the building is a manifestation of maintaining the traditional characteristics of Sibolga with a modern touch. The method uses the description method, which describes primary and secondary data with existing facts and then analyzes it to get conclusions. The design result is that the convention center, is expected to be a productive place to introduce and provide insight or knowledge. Attract local people and tourists to maintain and preserve the variety of arts and culture in Indonesia, especially in Sibolga.

Community Involvement Based on Community-Based Tourism Principles in the Development of Area-Based Tourism in Cirebon Regency

Tourism has a complex activity that includes many aspects, such as social, political, cultural, religious, and economic aspects. Tourism activities also cannot be separated from the existence of local communities as owners of culture, so tourism development efforts must pay attention to the participation of local communities around the Tourism Attraction. This study aims to describe the involvement of residents in the Talun Area of Cirebon Regency in the development of the tourism sector which has experienced a strengthening of commitment and an increase in the intensity of developing the tourism sector since before the Covid-19 pandemic. A descriptive method with a qualitative approach is used in this study. Data collection techniques were carried out through in-depth interviews, literature studies, and documentation studies. Data validation test was carried out by source triangulation. The results of the study show that: First, in the process of developing the area-based tourism sector in Talun, the source of the initiative still comes from the government, in this case, the the District Head (District Head (Camat)). Second, the characteristics of the Talun community, which are open, are more receptive to the idea of area-based tourism development. Third, community involvement in regional-based tourism development requires three prerequisites, namely leadership in administrative areas that become tourist areas, the growth of tourism culture, and active communities as supporters and drivers of tourism.

What drives senior tourists to travel to islands? The case of the Azores

PurposeAccording to the theory of push and pull factors, the current work aims to present two objectives: (1) to detect what attributes drive senior tourists to travel to the Azores islands, the role played by lecturing activities (LA) as push factors and their influence on the island's offer (pull factors) are analysed; and (2) to understand the personal and contextual barriers of tourists to provide information to the agents who form part of the tourism supply process on the island.Design/methodology/approachThe data has been processed using the statistical package SmartPLS version 26. Using an exploratory methodology based on structural equation modeling (SEM) structural equations applied to small sample sizes, a tentative model has been generated to define the drivers of tourism for elderly people who visit the islands.FindingsThe research study reveals that LA are the key factor in completing the offering of tourist destinations in the Azores. Educational packages should be made available to senior tourists. Likewise, several tourism barriers, such as flight times, cost of the trip, concern about the safety of destinations, type of accommodation, language difficulties and medical and health care should also be revised by tourism authorities and flight stakeholders with regard to the Azores Islands.Research limitations/implicationsThe reduced sample has made the results impossible to show greater predictive power.Practical implicationsThe role played by push factors, such as lecturing or educational activities, and pull factors, such as the tourism offering by the island, allows us to envisage educational packages based on the preferences of senior tourists, such as attending lectures on the history of the Azores, gastronomy (traditional food), active ageing flora, and interesting facts and legends of the islands.Social implicationsAs a push factor, social interaction has become the main motivation among senior tourists. Such tourists have conveyed not only their desire to meet other tourists but also their interest in socialising in tourist activities, relaxing and visiting other new places.Originality/valueEven though LA are relatively common among university students and those with bachelor's degrees, educational packages for senior tourism are now gaining in popularity. Better socio-economic conditions worldwide and easier access to education for mature people have allowed them to expand their knowledge by travelling to exotic destinations such as the Azores. This paper links that interest with barriers to travel as well as to the Azores' rich touristic offering.

PEMBINAAN SADAR WISATA DAN GROOMING UNTUK ANGGOTA POKDARWIS DI PULAU NGENANG

Ngenang Island, Nongsa District, Batam City is a tourist destination that has a variety of natural wealth that has not been visited by enough domestic or foreign tourists. Awareness of tourism from the community and the readiness of the community in one of its supporting elements, namely human resources, especially in terms of grooming, is expected to be one of the auxiliary values in increasing the flow of tourists, especially on Ngenang Island. Referring to the above, it is felt that it is necessary to develop tourism awareness and grooming for members of POKDARWIS Ngenang Island. It is necessary to conduct a SWOT analysis (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threat) so that POKDARWIS and other tourism drivers on Ngenang Island get a deeper analysis of what are the potentials and opportunities that can be achieved in the future in order to increase their tourism potential. From the mapping and initial hearings carried out before the activity and during the activity, the material was focused on public awareness of tourism and the importance of grooming elements, especially on the frontline / frontliner of Ngenang Island tourism

Women in Sustainable Tourism Development (Case Study at Komodo and Labuan Bajo Tourism Destination)

Tourism development is directed at human welfare and the integrity of nature around the destination, and a new concept in tourism development is ustainable tourism. In sustainable tourism, the role of women as tourism actors was considered because they often experienced a double burden of suffering from the roar of tourism progress in a destination. This paper aimed to map the involvement of women in sustainable tourism strategies in tourist destinations of Komodo National Park (KNP). This study uses a qualitative method. The data collection technique used in-depth interviews with women involved in tourism service businesses around KNP. This paper conducted interviews with local communities, previous research, NGOs and regional government’s data as data triangulation. The results of this study indicated that the involvement of women in tourism around KNP destinations was influenced by several factors such as patriarchal culture rooted in everyday life, stereotypes about women's abilities, and low self-esteem that came from women. On the other hand, the government's program for women's empowerment had not found the right formulation. The involvement of women around KNP as tourism drivers must also be a joint concern of the local community, NGOs, and local governments.
