DEBUNKING THE POST-RACIAL NOTION: A RACIAL PREJUDICE STUDY IN AMERICAN SOCIETY AS REFLECTED IN ANGIE THOMAS’ THE HATE U GIVE

Today, America is still busy with the problems of inequality, which include racial prejudice.The Hate U Give brings social issues that are rife to people of color, especially African Americans. In her novel, Thomas illustrates the injustice that had happened to the African American community because of the racial profiling that was carried out by white people. The writer uses descriptive analysis method in finding the meaning behind a literary work. The writer also conducts the study using Racial Prejudice theory by McLemore to see the types of prejudice in society. The writer also elaborates it with Du Bois’ Double Consciousness in analyzing racial prejudice towards African Americans. The study found out that perceived injustice is still often obtained by African Americans, where they still cannot have their rights as citizens in the United States, such as educational equality, economics, and legal protection. This prejudice is caused by the existence of social class conditions which are constrained by the majority race which tries to maintain its position as a 'ruler' in American society, the other factor is by the spreading Post-Racial ideology where the majority of people think that talking about racial issues is no longer relevant.

Examining BSA Muslim women’s everyday experiences of veiling through concepts of ‘the veil’ and ‘double consciousness’

ABSTRACT In The Souls of Black Folk W.E.B Du Bois conceptualised arguably two of the most significant and powerful theories of race and racism, that of ‘the Veil’ and ‘double consciousness’. This paper utilises the concept of the veil both literally, in the case of non/veiling acts of British South Asian (BSA) Muslim women living in Oldham, but also metaphorically, through the Veil, as a form of social and cultural exclusion of Muslim women in everyday interactions. The paper argues that the use of the Veil and double consciousness, is able to highlight the extent to which Muslim women actively reflect upon hegemonic discourses of the veil as oppression and veil as respectability which shape understandings of them. The paper contends that an analytical use of ‘double consciousness’ in particular, can highlight the nuanced experiences of BSA Muslim women’s everyday lives.

Double Consciousness: Explaining Racial Paradox in Later Life Psychological Well-Being

A substantial number of studies have documented paradoxical findings when examining race differences in later life psychological well-being. Despite experiencing significant structural disadvantages, Black older adults have been found to report significantly higher overall life satisfaction and lower depressive symptoms than White adults. This study relies on double consciousness framework which allows us to understand why satisfaction with material conditions (e.g., domain-specific life satisfaction) among Black older adults could differ from their evaluation of overall well-being (e.g., overall life satisfaction). Based on a survey of successful aging (n=409 aged 60 years or older) conducted by the Elderly Care Research Center (ECRC) in Cleveland, Ohio, we examined race differences in coping resources, and their role in shaping overall life satisfaction, domain-specific life satisfaction, and depressive symptoms. Findings show that Blacks on average have a higher likelihood of experiencing recent negative life events than their White counterparts. Despite adverse life circumstances, Blacks older adults expressed significantly higher overall life satisfaction than Whites. They, however, reported significantly lower domain-specific life satisfaction than their White counterparts. The differences in depressive symptoms between Black and White older adults was not statistically significant. The race differences in overall life satisfaction was explained by religiosity, religious coping, and social support. Education, income, and adverse life events were found to contribute to such differences in domain-specific life satisfaction. Our findings underscore the need to consider the unique role of racialized life course circumstances and coping resources in shaping disparities in later life psychological well-being.

New Names, New Identities: A ‘Double Consciousness’ Reading of Bulawayo’s We Need New Names

This paper explores identity crises in No Violet Bulawayo's novel, We Need New Names. The paper relies on Mimicry and Double Consciousness theory to advance its arguments. Data for the study consists of textual evidence in the book of how characters, who are African migrants in America want to, or are forced to, live a certain way of life in order to fit into the scheme of things of the European. The study approaches identity in the book from two different perspectives. It makes a distinction between the identity change that was forced on the colonised, and the one that the colonised willing chased and run after. Data of the study is analyzed from three different perspectives. It analyses language as an agent of double consciousness for the colonized, double consciousness itself as portrayed in the novel, and finally draws on the metaphorical and connotative use of the phrase ‘'New Names'. The paper concludes that since we are living in a world of constant change, a globalized world, where the notions of multiculturalism and mobility are prevailing, postcolonial subjects will constantly find themselves unconsciously reshaping their identities to make them fit the new world order.

ABSTRACT How do African students who arrive as refugees in the United States navigate a culture and society shaped by the history of slavery? How is their perspective different from that of their American-born peers and do they experience the ‘double consciousness’ that Dubois described in The Souls of Black Folk? This essay examines the experiences of 11th and 12th grade refugee students from Africa, the Middle East and Asia in one classroom in the USA. It explores how cultural knowledge and experiences informed their study of English and what the insights they shared in the classroom revealed about their ability to critique not only the literature but American society and culture.

A Study of Double Consciousness in Lauri Lemberg’s St. Croix Avenue and Paula Ivaska Robbins’ Below Rollstone Hill

ABSTRACT In this paper, I analyse the Du Boisian concept of ‘double consciousness’ and offer an overview of its different implications. I then approach Lauri Lemberg’s St. Croix Avenue and Paula Ivaska Robbins’ Below Rollstone Hill from the perspective of this concept. A comparative study of these novels enables me to detect and contextualise cases of double consciousness within both texts as related to Finnish immigrants in the United States. I also argue how this ‘double consciousness’ affects the lives and ethnic identities of Finnish immigrant characters. In line with a contextual analysis, a textual analysis in the form of close reading will also be undertaken in order to offer a better understanding of the functions of ‘double consciousness’ for Finnish characters in both literary works.

Broadening the social psychological approach to acculturation: cultural, personality and social-network approaches (Ampliación del enfoque socio-psicológico de la aculturación: perspectivas cultural, de la personalidad y de las redes sociales)

ABSTRACT The field of acculturation spans a rich and broad spectrum of relevant topics, types of populations and geographic areas. It has, however, been slow in incorporating theoretical insights beyond the intergroup relations perspective, neglecting contributions from other social psychology areas, such as the socio-cognitive approach, and from disciplines such as cultural and personality psychology, and the social-network perspective. The main aim of this article is to inform and broaden the understanding of micro- and meso-level acculturation mechanisms (e.g., cultural frame switching, multicultural identity structure and dynamics, intra- and inter-personal interculturality). We argue that it is time for acculturation research to apply other methodologies, rely on new theoretical paradigms and move from predicting acculturation outcomes (e.g., psychological well-being) to modelling acculturation processes. The article closes with a discussion on potential future challenges and needed directions in the social psychological study of acculturation, interculturalism and migration.

“Doomed to a kind of double consciousness”: treacherous hospitality and the inversion of tradition in A.S. Byatt’s “Morpho Eugenia”

ABSTRACT A.S. Byatt’s “Morpho Eugenia” marks a significant moment in the consideration of (narrative) hospitality in neo-Victorian fiction. It expands on the concerns of neo-Victorianism by foregrounding the theme of hospitality in discourses that are central to the Victorian novel and to contemporary re-interpretations of Victorian culture. Among these are the trope of the visit to the family house in the English novel, in which guests are often then assimilated into the family, and the perils and threats to personal identity that come with the crossing of the threshold of hospitality. A third is the relationship with the ‘other’ in the un/conditional hospitality that is experienced by the protagonist. All of these sub-themes are contained in an epistemological dimension defined by science and religion, problematically interrelated at the time. This article thus considers the conceptual standpoint and the narrative strategies with which Byatt engages with the literary tradition of hospitality, from Homeric parallels through the nineteenth-century novel’s interest in self-identity, to the implications of the limits of knowledge and recognition of otherness. It also assesses the novella’s neo-Victorianism as a literary reimagining of the nineteenth-century world and examines its receptiveness to a post-structuralist questioning of traditional notions of hospitality.

Transculturation, Ideology, and Double Consciousness in LeRoi Jones’s (Amiri Baraka’s) The Great Goodness of Life: A Coon Show and The Slave Ship

مقاله ی حاضر در نظر دارد تا در نمایشنامه های ایدئولوژیکی لیروی جونز یا امیری باراکا (2014-1934) با عناوین بهترین جذابیت زندگی (1969) و کشتی بردگان (1967) به بررسی مفاهیم میان فرهنگی، ایدئولوژی، و موضوع دو هویتی بپردازد. برای نیل به این منظور، از رویکردهای فرانتس فانون در حیطه ی مفاهیم میان فرهنگی و تحلیل هویت سیاهپوستان، و از نظرات اسلاوی ژیژک در تحلیل رویکردهای ایدئولوژیکی-روانشناختی استفاده شده است. یکی از مدلهای ارتباطات میان فرهنگی در حیطه ی عملکرد قوانین استعماری در ایجاد مستعمرات با عنوان حمایت از کشور آفریقایی یا منطقه ی سیاهپوست نشین و یا جذب سیاهپوستان مهاجر به کشورهای سفیدپوست اروپایی-آمریکایی صورت می گیرد. تأثیرات فرهنگ های مختلف در مستعمرات، حاصل آمیزش بین نژادها و فرهنگ ها، باعث ایجاد تضادها، ترسها، نفرت ها، خشونت ها، و جنایات هر روزه خواهند بود. نمایشنامه های باراکا مانند سلاحی سیاسی و انقلابی، به ساختارهای ایدئولوژی حاکم، فرهنگ و نهادهای قراردادی-اجتماعی سفیدپوستان حمله می کند، و آزادی سیاهپوستان، نابودی انواع برده داری، و رهایی از تبعیض نژادی از درون مایه های نمایشنامه های باراکا می باشند. نمایشنامه های ایدئولوژیکی باراکا باعث ترویج فرهنگ مقاومت در سیاهپوستان و افزایش خودآگاهی نژادی و اعتماد به نفس در میان آنان گردیده است، او سیاهپوستان را صاحب فرهنگ و زبان مستقل می شمارد و اذعان می دارد که آنان باید برای کسب استقلال و آزادی خویش به پا خیزند. این مقاله بر آن است تا با تمرکز بر نمایشنامه های ایدئولوژیکی باراکا، پیامدهای تقابل فرهنگ ها را با توجه به عملکردهای ایدئولوژیکی حاکم از طرف استعمارگران سفیدپوست بر سیاهپوستان تفسیر نماید، و براین اساس، به بررسی عوامل قدرت از طریق توصیف ابزارهای مختلف برده داری از جمله خشونت و سرکوب جهت ایجاد دوسویگی، تردید، و دوهویتی در سیاهپوستان بپردازد.

Double Consciousness and Despair: Exploring a Connection Between Søren Kierkegaard and W.E.B. Du Bois

Abstract This paper explores the connection between Søren Kierkegaard’s concept of despair and W.E.B. Du Bois’ concept of double consciousness. The concepts have been separately argued to share a root in Hegel’s “Unhappy Consciousness,” and further, each notion in part explains the interaction of a person with their culture. The paper seeks to highlight the importance of culture in interpreting Kierkegaard’s despair, and to do so by including a critique via Du Bois that a person’s existence in a culture of oppression potentially impacts one’s relation to oneself, whether that person is the oppressor or the oppressed.

An intimate dialog between race and gender at Women\u2019s Suffrage Centennial

Women’s Suffrage Centennial has arrived in a culturally divisive time in the United States as well as in a high-stakes presidential election year. All this is accompanied with the emergence of Black Lives Matter movement on a global-scale in the wake of the African American man George Floyd’s death under the knees of white police officers. In an “I cannot breathe” America at a new cultural awakening moment, is the Centennial a divider or unifier for American women in 2020? This article aims to answer the question by revisiting the 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution and iconic figures like Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. DuBois, and Mary Church Terrell. In an interdisciplinary approach anchored in both historical and cultural studies, the article scrutinizes the split between the two visceral elements pertinent to cultural identity—gender and race—in Women’s Suffrage Movement, draws a pattern of their intersection, and maps out a “double consciousness” (to borrow W.E.B. DuBois’ term). The article argues that the women’s suffrage movement was indeed a gigantic step towards the American ideal of gender equality but it fell short of racial equality. There is a mixed legacy to embrace and to reevaluate at the same time. Therefore, Women’s Suffrage Centennial should not and cannot be a single-issue gender celebration, nor a one-size-fits-all symphony, but a landmark occasion for an intimate and nuanced dialog between gender and race. The article suggests that the Centennial should not only celebrate white American suffragists, but should be an opportunity to make a historic step to cross the color line that has cutoff African American women, as well as women of color from other races, ethnicities, and heritages from the power center.

Multicultural body-based cultural frame switching: A dance/movement therapy approach

ABSTRACT This article considers how individuals who believe they do not belong to a single cultural or ethnic group, may feel culturally homeless as a result of low bicultural identity integration (BII) in which they feel their multiple cultural identities do not fit together but are contrasting. This feeling of dissonance between a person’s cultural identities can lead to norm violations in social situations due to their inability to culturally frame switch into the most appropriate cultural meaning system. The author’s proposed Multicultural Body-Based Cultural Frame Switching Model utilises dance movement therapy techniques and research from the field of cognitive psychology to help people increase their BII and better accurately culturally frame switch. The model increases memories of positive bicultural experiences through the exploration of body posture, which raises BII and allows for easier access to a person’s differing cultural meaning systems in a given situation.

“A Whole Other Layer of Complexity”: Black Transgender Men’s Experiences

Black transgender men are exposed to systems of oppression such as racism and cissexism at unique intersections of marginalized racial and gender identities, yet their experiences within such systems are not well understood. In this qualitative study, 10 Black transgender men were interviewed and six major themes were identified: developing an empowered view of self, navigating double consciousness, having a target on your back, strategies of resilience, culture of silence, and finding quality care.

Decolonising MOS as Praxis and an Other Critical Performativity

This paper presents the findings of an action research and team-based authoethnographic research project aimed at decolonizing current debates on critical performativity. The literatures on critical performativity and decolonizing management and organizational knowledge have developed in parallel, offering us the opportunity to investigate the nexus of the two. We first identify the Eurocentric conditions of possibility of critical performativity and CMS, and as disruption of these epistemic limits, propose the notion of decolonial praxis as an ‘other’ (pun intended) performativity. We unpack this idea empirically by drawing upon qualitative data and participant and organizer reflections on an academic workshop (co-organized by the authors) held in South Africa on the topic of decolonizing management and organizational knowledge. Our thematic findings draw attention to the embodied, affective nature of such decolonial praxis, as well as the importance of ‘knowing’ and ‘doing things’ with a double consciousness. Organized under two key themes (connected borderlands; phronetic border thinking/doing), these findings enable us to specify some conceptual features of decolonizing (management) practice that exist beyond colonial difference, and to draw out practical implications for management academics and Business Schools seeking to pursue a decolonial agenda.

“Is There a Self in This Text? Satire, Passing, and Life in Danzy Senna’s Caucasia”

ABSTRACT In this paper, I argue that Danzy Senna’s Caucasia is a satirical passing narrative that exposes the tragedy of traditional passing novels as archaic for relying on racial binaries and perpetuating white desirability. I draw on the existing scholarship surrounding satire and traditional passing narratives and apply it to Senna’s work to analyze the ways this novel differs from traditional, early 20th-century passing narratives to comment on the absurdity of white desirability and the racial binary through the American Dream. Specifically, I look at Caucasia as a location in which the main characters – biracial Birdie and Cole Lee; their white mother, Sandy; and their black father, Deck – must find a way to live. The all-white space the characters are forced to inhabit informs their racial identities and desires and leads to a double consciousness within the narrator, Birdie. Ultimately, Senna’s satire illuminates the tragic passing narrative as complicit in upholding and reinforcing assumptions of a binary world. Additionally, Senna shows the double consciousness African Americans and biracial individuals embody because of America’s fixation on the white, American Dream that manifests itself as life in Caucasia.

My emotions belong here and there: extending the phenomenon of emotional acculturation to heritage culture fit

ABSTRACT When immigrant minorities engage in a new cultural context, their patterns of emotional experience come to change – a process we coined emotional acculturation. To date, research on emotional acculturation focused on the antecedents and consequences of changes in minorities’ fit with the new culture. Yet, most minorities also continue to engage in their heritage culture. Therefore, the current research investigated which personal and situational factors afford minorities to maintain emotional fit with their heritage culture. Two studies compared the emotional patterns of Korean Americans (n = 49) with those of Koreans in Korea (n = 80), and the emotional patterns of Turkish Belgians (n = 144) with those of Turks in Turkey (n = 250), respectively. As expected, we found that although minorities did not fit the heritage emotional patterns as well as participants in their home countries, spending time with heritage culture friends and interacting in heritage culture settings explained within-group differences in minorities’ heritage culture fit. Therefore, the current research shows that minorities’ emotional patterns are not only cultivated, but also activated by their interactions in different socio-cultural contexts. Moreover, it provides further evidence for cultural frame-switching in the domain of emotion.
