Contrastive Analysis Between English Medical Terms with Affixes and Their Indonesian Equivalent in Dorland’s Illustrated Medical Dictionary

Medical terms are language units used to describe medical conditions such as diseases, symptoms, anatomy, and procedures. Medical terms are composed of a combination of affixes and root words. This research focused on contrastive analysis, a study comparing two languages, the source language and their equivalent in the target language. This study aims (1) to find out similarities between English medical terms with affixes in English and their Indonesian equivalents in Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary (2) to find out differences between English medical terms with affixes in English and their Indonesian equivalents in Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary (3) to predict learning problems based on the differences between English medical terms with affixes in English and their Indonesian equivalents in Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary. The data source of this research is "Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary 31st edition" by W.A. Newman Dorland and translated into Indonesian under the title " Kamus Kedokteran Dorland Edisi 3" by Retna Neary Elseria et al. This research is qualitative, and the type of research is library research. The study's results revealed seven affix English medical terms that have similarities with Indonesian equivalents and 93 terms that differ from Indonesian equivalents. The similarities and differences are divided into prefixes and suffixes. There are 8 types of prefixes and 4 types of suffixes. Predictions of problems that may occur in these conditions are in different forms, uses, and meanings. This research is expected to help better understand affixes in English medical terms and their Indonesian equivalents.

Medical and dermatology dictionaries: An examination of unstructured definitions and a proposal for the future

Medical dictionaries serve to describe and clarify the term set used by medical professionals. In this commentary, we analyze a representative set of skin disease definitions from 2 prominent medical dictionaries, Stedman's Medical Dictionary and Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary. We find that there is an apparent lack of stylistic standards with regard to content and form. We advocate a new standard form for the definition of medical terminology, a standard to complement the easy-to-read yet unstructured style of the traditional dictionary entry. This new form offers a reproducible structure, paving the way for the development of a computer readable “dictionary” of medical terminology. Such a dictionary offers immediate update capability and a fundamental improvement in the ability to search for relationships between terms.

Who needs medical dictionaries? Students of medicine and allied professions and crafts need them to find brief, clear definitions of terms encountered in their reading. Medical writers and editors need them to verify spellings, plurals, abbreviations, and kindred linguistic minutiae. Journalists, lawyers, and insurance clerks need them for their own multifarious if not nefarious purposes. Automated access to a large medical dictionary: Online assistance for research and application in natural language processing

Online dictionaries can be important tools for research and application in natural language processing. This paper describes work with a machine-readable version of “Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary”. First the characteristics of the dictionary are briefly described, and then the complex process of converting the tape to an online interactive dictionary is discussed. The results of several experiments in automatically deriving information from the online dictionary are presented, and the paper ends with a discussion of the use of the online dictionary as a tool in the development of a natural language processing system designed for the biomedical domain.

The history of medical dictionaries can be traced back to the Etymologiae of Isidore of Seville in the seventh century. The first to be printed was a 1471 edition of a work by an Italian, Simone Cordo, who had lived two centuries earlier. The earliest original compilation of medical terminology in English was A Medicinal Dictionary by Robert James (1743-1745), prefaced, fittingly enough, by Samuel Johnson. Successive editions of three unabridged dictionaries have long been standards for use in the United States, namely, Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary, Stedman's Medical Dictionary, and Blakiston's New Gould Medical Dictionary . More recently, in response to needs of allied health professionals and students, among others, some useful reference alternatives have appeared, notably the Encyclopedia and Dictionary of Medicine, Nursing, and Allied Health and Melloni's Illustrated Medical Dictionary . Heterotopic vs Heterotropic

To the Editor: Question 6 of the Self-Assessment Quiz on Spinal Cord Injury (Phys Ther, July 1982) mentions “heterotropic bone formation.” I bring to the attention of the editors of Physical Therapy the correct term—heterotopic. Though it may have been a typographical error, I hope correction will be conveyed to readers, as even in conversation I have heard the wrong term used. According to Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary , heterotopic means “occurring at an abnormal place or upon the wrong part of the body.” “Heterotropic” is not found in Dorland's or, for that matter, in any dictionary I consulted. The closest words are heterotropia—“failure of the visual axes to remain parallel when fusion is a possibility,” and heterotrophic—“not self-sustaining; said of organisms which require a reduced form of carbon for energy and synthesis.”

The 25th edition of<i>Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary</i>became available for purchase early in the summer of 1974. Scores of thousands of physicians, medical students, medical secretaries, and other allied personnel will be grateful to the 22 contributors and 84 consultants who labored diligently to maintain the quality of a volume that has served the profession since the turn of the century. During these years, medical science and the art of practice have become more and more compartmentalized. Samuel Johnson, who certainly should have known, stated: No dictionary of a living tongue ever can be perfect, since while it is hastening to publication, some words are budding and some falling away.... Dictionaries are like watches: the worst is better than none, and the best cannot be expected to go quite true. Since its debut 75 years ago, this lexicon has had 25 editions. I must confess that I have used the 22nd edition for the past 23 years without being aware that I was out of step with the times. Maybe we keep our old dictionaries because we feel comfortable with them, as we do with old friends, and perhaps we have a reluctance to discard them because we do not wish to admit the passing of time. How can a reviewer assess a new dictionary? I am not sure, but I put it to some tests in
