Background: Public spaces are great places for spreading the message about organ donation. The space is free and has many visitors of all age groups on a daily basis. MOHAN Foundation used Chennai Metro stations for different activities to drive home the organ donation message. Methods: MOHAN Foundation is a non-profit, non-governmental organization in India, engaged in the area of deceased organ donation for the past 22 years. It is the largest organ donation organization in India. Through its seven offices, spread across India, MOHAN has actively pursued organ donation awareness programs among the cross section of our population. While there are over 20 million donor cards distributed on the ground, 53,540 people have pledged for organ donation since March 2010 through our website, www.mohanfoundation.org. To mark the 50th anniversary of Heart Transplantation, MOHAN Foundation organized a concert titled “Metro Retro” on December 3rd, 2017 – the first-ever awareness initiative for organ donation at a Metro station. Most popular musicians, “Ranjani & Gayatri Sisters” performed at the Vadapalani Metro Station, wherein 800 music aficionados attended the event. Results: At the Metro Retro event, 80 participants pledged for organ donation. Encouraged with the response from this event, we organized a “Color Art” (Rangoli) Festival on 6th January 2018, which saw 80 enthusiastic participants. India observes the week of 2nd October to 8th October as “Joy of Giving Week” to mark the birthday of Father of Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. During this time, MOHAN put up booths to spread awareness about organ donation. During this time, 130 people pledged for organ donation. Again on 24th November, 2018, a “Visual Art Festival” was organized wherein students were invited to participate in a visual arts competition on organ donation. 200 students participated and their work was exhibited at Vadapalani Metro Station. 150 people pledged for organ donation during the festival. With increased awareness, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited invited MOHAN Foundation to its office for an audio visual presentation. 25 staff members participated out of which 5 pledged for organ donation. Conclusions: Public places like Metro Stations are worth exploring for organ donation awareness. Official permission from the Metro office has helped us greatly. They are always open to such philanthropic activities.
