Stock market openness and audit fees: evidence from the inclusion of China A-shares in the MSCI emerging markets index

This study examines how China’s stock market openness affects audit fees. In May 2018, Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) announced the first wave of listing of large-cap China A-shares in the MSCI Emerging Markets (EM) Index, which marked China’s grand entrance into the global investment benchmark, and sharply expanded its stock market investor base. Using a difference-in-differences approach, we find that audit fees for constituent stocks decrease after the index inclusion. Further analyses suggest that foreign investors can reduce the risk of expropriation by controlling shareholders and mitigate agency conflicts. Our results also show that the effect is more pronounced for firms with weaker internal controls, lower levels of domestic institutional ownership, and those located in less developed markets. Our findings highlight the monitoring effect of stock market openness in improving corporate governance and advance our understanding of the key drivers of audit fees in emerging markets.

Is Institutional Ownership Socially Responsible? Perspectives from Heterogeneity and Stability of Institutional Ownership

This study examines the relationship between institutional ownership and the corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance of companies in India. Referring to social market theory, the free cash flow theory of agency costs and the institutional theory of CSR, this study hypothesized a positive association between institutional ownership and CSR performance (CSP). It empirically tested the hypothesis on a sample of 814 firm-years from 2010 to 2019. The findings reveal a significantly positive association between institutional ownership persistence and CSP. The robustness of the findings is tested against the heterogeneity of institutional ownership, namely, domestic and foreign institutional ownership, with reference to the ‘hometown advantage hypothesis’ and ‘global investor hypothesis’. Domestic institutional ownership significantly impacts CSP in line with the ‘hometown advantage hypothesis’; meanwhile, the significant influence of foreign institutional ownership on CSR aligns with the ‘global investor hypothesis’.

THE ROLE OF FOREIGN OWNERSHIP, INSTITUTIONAL OWNERSHIP, INCOME-EARNING ABILITY, AND PROFITABILITY ON COMPANY CAPITAL STRUCTURE DYNAMICS

Capital structure is an essential decision for the company. Capital structure is related to the composition and contribution of the company's funding in operational activities. This study aims to identify and describe the variables that affect the company's capital structure. This study uses a quantitative approach with explanatory research. The analysis technique used in this study is to use descriptive analysis and statistical inferential analysis with multiple regression techniques. The population used is a manufacturing company listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange. The sampling method used is purposive sampling. In this study, the purposive sampling criteria used included Companies that have conducted an IPO (Initial Public Offering) before 2016 and are listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange and Companies that have published annual financial reports on the IDX from 2016 to 2020. The research variables used are capital structure, company size, profitability, foreign investor ownership, government ownership, and institutional ownership. The research results show that the variables of company income and ownership investors have no significant influence on the dynamics of the company's capital structure. Meanwhile, domestic institutional ownership and company profitability have an influence which is significant to the company's capital structure. There are differences in power, the influence of variables on the company's ability to generate income, investor ownership, and foreign and domestic institutional ownership between companies with share ownership by foreign investors and companies that only have domestic institutions.

Institutional investors by nationality and long-term investor value appropriation

This study investigates the impact of institutional investors on firm value, concentrating specifically on the role of institutional monitoring by nationality in long-term investor-value appropriation (LIVA). The findings reveal a significant positive correlation between domestic institutional ownership and LIVA. Moreover, the presence of independent domestic institutional investors accentuates the strength of this relationship. Notably, this study demonstrates that domestic institutional monitoring significantly impacts firms with high information asymmetry, thus underscoring the monitoring costs associated with geographic distance. In summary, it reinforces the existing body of evidence supporting the monitoring function of domestic institutional investors in influencing firm decisions. It elucidates the variations in long-term firm value by delineating the distinct monitoring roles of domestic and foreign institutional investors.

Purpose: This study examines how ownership structure affects financial performance, with debt policy as an influencing factor. Methodology/Approach: This study adopted a quantitative research method. The OSIRIS database and indices, which are the outcomes of earlier investigations, served as secondary data sources for this study. Results/findings: The results of the analysis show that in Indonesia, (1) the ownership structure shown by insider ownership has no relationship with debt policy; (2) the ownership structure shown by insider ownership is related to financial performance; (3) debt policy does not affect firm value as a proxy for stock prices; (4) there is a positive effect of financial performance on firm value; and (5) there is no effect of ownership structure on firm value through debt policy and financial performance as intervening variables. Limitations: Ownership structure and ownership have no relationship with debt policy. Contribution: Indri Ayu Lestari (2022) The results of this study indicate that Foreign Institutional Ownership, Domestic Institutional Ownership, and Dividend Policy have a positive and significant effect on Firm Value. Foreign Institutional Ownership has a negative and significant effect on Dividend Policy. Domestic Institutional Ownership has no effect on Dividend Policy. Dividend Policy as an intervening variable is unable to mediate Foreign Institutional Ownership of Firm Value. Dividend Policy as an intervening variable is unable to mediate Domestic Institutional Ownership of Firm Value.

Do foreign institutional investors influence corporate climate change disclosure quality? International evidence

AbstractResearch Question/IssueWe examine the association between foreign institutional ownership and climate change disclosure quality from 2006 to 2018 across 34 countries. We find that firms with a higher level of foreign institutional ownership demonstrate better quality climate change disclosures, whereas domestic institutional ownership has immaterial impacts on such disclosures. We utilize a difference‐in‐differences (DiD) analysis using a firm's addition to the Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) index as an exogenous shock to control for endogeneity. Our findings are robust to various other endogeneity controls. We also establish evidence on an indirect effect of climate change disclosure quality in mediating the positive association between foreign institutional investors and firm valuation.Research Findings/InsightsWe find that the positive association between foreign institutional ownership and climate change disclosure quality is more pronounced for (1) firms domiciled in stakeholder‐orientated countries, (2) firms domiciled in countries that adopt emission trading schemes, and (3) firms with a greater level of information asymmetry. Additionally, our results are more robust when foreign investors are domiciled in countries that care more about the environment.Theoretical/Academic ImplicationsOur study contributes to climate change disclosures, corporate governance, and international business literature by showing that foreign rather than domestic institutional investors contribute to improved corporate climate change disclosure quality in their portfolio firms.Practitioner/Policy ImplicationsOur study urges regulators to increase their market oversight, especially in firms with less foreign institutional ownership. This is required because such firms are prone to exhibiting poorer accountability for their climate risk management practices, and their disclosures are bereft of effective external monitoring mechanisms.

Determinants of Bank Profitability in the Context of Financial Liberalization: Evidence from Morocco

This article aims, in the context of financial liberalization, to examine the impact of several internal and external factors in relation to the profitability of banks listed on the Moroccan stock exchange. The study uses the panel data method on a sample of the six banks with the largest market shares over the 2010–2019 period to investigate the influence of ownership structure, bank governance, capital structure, prudential regulation, and also a macroeconomic variation on bank profitability. Accordingly, the empirical results indicate a negative relationship between concentration, foreign ownership, and bank profitability. Further, high capital structure ratios, especially solvency, liquidity, and capitalization ratios appear to have an undesirable effect on the performance of Moroccan banks. In contrast, the impact of domestic institutional ownership is positive, implying that profitability is more favored by domestic ownership than by foreign ownership. Our findings also highlight the importance of independent directors and board size. Therefore, liberalizing ownership and opening up the board to the expertise of outside directors is essential for the banking sector’s development. In terms of policy implications, central banks and regulators need to ensure that banks rigorously adhere to specified leverage and fixed capital adequacy ratios while ensuring optimal liberalization for bank performance.

DOMESTIC INSTITUTIONAL OWNERSHIP DAN FOREIGN INSTITUTIONAL OWNERSHIP TERHADAP LIKUIDITAS SAHAM (Studi pada Industri Manufaktur yang Terdaftar di Bursa Efek Indonesia)

This research was conducted to deterime the influence of ownership structure, domestic institutional ownership and foreign institutional ownership from stock market liquidity. Control variable in this research is size measure by market capitalization. This research use a quantitative approach using statistical tools in the form of multiple linear regression. This study use secondary data from manufacture firm wich fulfill the requirement and listing in Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2009-2010. The result of this study conclude that domestic institutional ownership has a significant negative influence on stock market liquidity wich measured by depth but domestic institutional ownership wich measured by relative spread hasn’t significant influence on stock market liquidity. The second result of this study is foreign institutional ownership has a significant negative influence on stock market liquidity wich measured by depth and also has a significant positive influence on market likuidity wich measured by relative spread. Control variable has varied influence on stock market liquidity. Ownership, Intellectual Capital, Audit Quality, Debt Level and Integrity of Financial Statements

<p>There are many cases of financial statement manipulation in practice which result in low financial statement integrity, unreliability and can mislead users. Therefore, research on the financial statement integrity (FSI), especially in the consumer goods industry, is important to study.<strong> </strong>This research aims to provide evidence of the effect of ownership type, intellectual capital, audit quality and debt levels on the integrity of the financial statements of the consumer goods manufacturing industry in companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange. Sample of this research is consumer goods manufacturing companies listed on the IDX. The six sub-sectors of the consumer goods industry are food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, cigarettes, cosmetics and household goods, household appliances and other consumer goods. The purposive sampling method was used to select the sample. The number of samples observed was 249 during 2017-2021. The analysis technique uses multiple regression tests. The results showed that domestic institutional ownership, foreign institutional ownership, government institusional ownership had a positive and significant effect on the FSI. Debt level and quality of audit proved to have a negative and significant effect on FSI. Individual ownership and intellectual capital had no effect on the FSI. This research differentiates into 4 types of ownership, namely domestic, foreign, government, and individual ownership. It is still rare to research that distinguishes the 4 types of ownership. In addition, research specifically using consumer goods industry samples is still rare, even though there are cases of low financial report integrity in this industry.</p>

Does increasing the QFII quota promote Chinese institutional investors to drive ESG?

ABSTRACT This paper assesses whether qualified foreign institutional investors (QFIIs) and domestic institutional investors in China drive the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance of firms. We first show that QFII ownership is positively associated with future ESG performance but that domestic institutional ownership is not. We then examine the effect of the increase in QFII investment funds on the decision of domestic institutional investors to drive ESG. We find that with the increase in QFII investment funds, domestic institutional investors start to promote firms to improve future ESG performance, especially domestic institutional investors who have held shares of one same firm as QFIIs at the same time. In particular, funds and security funds are affected by QFIIs, and the effect of institutional ownership is stronger in the ESG categories of corporate governance, workforce diversity and product quality. Overall, our results suggest that QFIIs motivate Chinese institutional investors to drive ESG.

The signaling roles of ownership and board structure for foreign institutional investors in the tourism industry

Foreign institutional capital performs a critical role in the development of the tourism industry. Little research has been conducted to understand how foreign institutional investors choose tourism firms from the governance perspective. The primary purpose of the current study is to bridge this research gap by examining the signaling roles of CEO ownership, domestic institutional ownership, and institutional directors in preferences of foreign institutional investors. Outcomes show foreign institutional investors are more likely to invest in tourism firms who have higher CEO ownership, lower domestic institutional ownership, and a higher level of institutional directors. Implications and limitations are accordingly discussed.

국내 및 외국인 기관투자자와 한국기업의 배당정책

We examine whether domestic and foreign institutional ownership for Korean firms have any association with the dividend policy. We use dividend payout ratio and dividend yield as the proxy for dividend policy, and various types of institutional ownership by their national origin and investment horizon. We use the method of Yan and Zhang(2009) to calculate investment horizon. We found the following empirical results. First, we found that total institutional ownership has no significant relation with dividend payout ratio and dividend yield. The results for domestic or foreign institutional ownership are not significant, either. Second, when we divide institutional ownership by investment horizon, we found a positive and significant relation between long-term institutional ownership and dividend payout ratio. By contrast, short-term institutional ownership has no significant relation with dividend payout ratio and yield. Third, when we consider both investment horizon and national origin, long-term domestic institutional ownership shows a significantly positive relation with dividend payout ratio. However, short-term foregin institutional ownership has a significantly negative relation with dividend payout ratio. Accordingly we interpret the results as an evidence that long-term domestic institutions play a proper monitoring role, thereby reducing agency costs and increasing dividend payouts. In contrast, short-term foreign institutions pursue short-term capital gain rather than dividend. Overall, the main results are consistent with the hypothesis that long-term institutional ownership would lead to higher dividend payout ratio. Our findings have important implications for Korean firms that they should appeal long-term institutional investors as a major shareholder base, and enhance corporate governance structure.

Dynamic behaviour of institutional ownership and firm life cycle: Evidence from Taiwan

ABSTRACT We find that firms in the growth and maturity stage generally have higher levels of institutional ownership, higher Tobin’s Q ratios, and are more likely to remain in their life cycle stage over the subsequent six-year period. Further analysis indicates a feedback effect between domestic and foreign institutional ownership. Finally, we find that the impact information transmission of foreign institutional ownership is faster than that of domestic institutional ownership. We conclude that Taiwan’s government has been successful in its efforts over the last 20 years to increase economic growth, strengthen corporate governance, and improve the country’s capital markets.

Role of Foreign and Domestic Institutional Investors in Corporate Sustainability: Focusing on R&D Investment

This paper examines the effects of ownership by foreign and domestic institutional investors on corporate sustainability by focusing on the level of research and development (R&D) investment. Long-term investment in R&D is crucial for companies that seek to generate sustainable growth. Ordinary least-squares regression is performed on a sample of Korean listed companies. The main test with both foreign and domestic institutional ownership is based on a study period from 2001 to 2004. The results indicate that firms with higher levels of foreign institutional ownership exhibit greater levels of corporate R&D activities, while the ownership by domestic institutions has no significant influence on firms’ R&D investment. An additional test with foreign institutional ownership data is based on an extended study period from 2001 to 2014, and shows that foreign institutional ownership is positively related to firms’ R&D investment. This result survives the two-stage instrumental variable approach used to address endogeneity factors in foreign institutional ownership. Taken together, these findings suggest that foreign institutions can effectively monitor managerial myopia and promote corporate innovations.

The Effect of Firm Size, Leverage, Profitability, Ownership Structure, and Firm Age on Enterprise Risk Management Disclosures

This study aims to examine the effect of firm size, leverage, profitability, domestic institutional ownership structure, foreign ownership structure, local individual ownership structure, and firm age on enterprise risk management disclosure. The population in this study was a manufacturing firm registered on the IDX in 2013-2017 with a purposive sampling technique and produced 7 samples with 35 units of analysis. The data in this study are secondary data in the form of annual reports with data collection techniques in the form of documentation. This study uses multiple regression data analysis technique. The results showed that firm size and firm age had a significant positive effect on enterprise risk management disclosure, while leverage, profitability, domestic institutional ownership structure, foreign ownership structure, local individual ownership structure had a significant negative effect towards enterprise risk management disclosures. The conclusion of this study is that only firm size and firm age have a significant positive effect on enterprise risk management disclosure, which means that the larger the size of the firm and the longer the firm stands, the higher the disclosure.

The role of institutional ownership structures on corporate performance

Institutional investors are the key investors in stock markets. Stock markets are influenced by these giants. We investigate the comparative institutional ownership structure in financial and non‐financial corporations. Institutional ownership structures are foreign, domestic, state, and private institutional ownership, which are examined against the corporate performance of 40 firms listed in Pakistan Stock Exchange from 2006 to 2016. Panel regression is applied to observe the results. Varied impacts for every category of institutional ownership in financial and non‐financial firms are evident. The findings of the study are robust, and potential investors can use this study for their future investment plans. Investor institutions can decide their future investment directions in Pakistan.

Independent Parties in Minimizing Agency Problem in Indonesia: An Alternative Model

Abstract Despite various studies on good corporate governance (GCG), many GCG mechanisms do not seem to work effectively in Indonesian companies due to frequent conflicts between majority and minority shareholders. A more independent party needs to be offered to solve this unique agency problem. This study attempts to analyze how independent parties; foreign and domestic institutional ownership, and independent commissioners may provide solution to agency problem. Results of panel data regression show a positive and significant influence of foreign institutional ownership on dividends and stock prices, whereas domestic institutional ownership and independent commissioners do not significantly affect shareholder wealth. The study also proposes a new model to minimize the possibility of agency problems in Indonesian context through the establishment of foreign institutional ownership as an independent party.

Institutional Investors and Corporate Performance: Insights from China

This study uses the annual data of Chinese A-share listed companies held by institutional investors during the period of 2005–2016 for empirical analysis. First, this study uses the panel regression model to explore the relationship between institutional ownership and stock return volatility. Then, the CAPM one-factor model and the Fama–French three-factor model are used to analyze the relationship between institutional ownership and idiosyncratic risks. Finally, we estimate the relationship between institutional ownership and corporate governance. Furthermore, we compare the empirical results before, during, and after the crisis. This study uses the Hausman test and the endogenous test to validate the results. The empirical results show that the management behavior of independent institutional investors is more obvious post-crisis. However, gray institutional investors have no impact on idiosyncratic risks. In the regression of the CAPM one-factor model, domestic institutional investors have effectively reduced the idiosyncratic risks before the financial crisis. Foreign institutions’ monitoring performance before, during, and after the crisis is not obvious. All institutional ownership has a significant positive impact on the top 10 shareholders, but independent and domestic institutional ownership has a significant negative impact on senior shareholders. Institutional ownership has little impact on the movement of the first shareholder and CEO.

Board Quality and Earnings Management: Evidence from India

This article examines whether board qualities influence the earnings management behaviour of firms in a large emerging market set-up by using panel data of 783 Indian private manufacturing firms over a period of 7 years (April 2009–March 2016). The study finds that it is board quality that helps in curbing earnings manipulation and not just board independence. Results reveal that diligent and busy boards help in reducing earnings management, CEO duality affects the quality of reported earnings and promoters’ influence on boards increases earnings management. Domestic or foreign institutional investors do not have any independent impact on earnings management. However, domestic institutional ownership reduces earnings management when promoters’ influence exists. The article contributes to the literature by focusing on whether corporate governance (CG) mechanisms are important in curbing earnings management in an emerging market context. The findings are expected to be helpful to policymakers and regulators while framing appropriate CG policies and regulations.
