Fatherhood in America: A History.

An historical analysis of men's lives as parents, this book traces a fundamental shift - the transformation from the 19th-century patriarch, a man whose position as breadwinner was more or less unquestioned, to the late-20th-century Dad, a man who now shares the breadwinning with his wife. Using intimate revelations from diaries and letters, prescriptive exhortations in popular magazines, impersonal social scientific surveys, and the transcripts of congressional hearings, Griswold explores a range of subjects - the long history of calls for fathers to be more involved at home; the history of fatherhood among African-Americans; the tensions between immigrant fathers and their Americanized offspring; the unresolved relationship between feminism and fatherhood; and the deployment of the fatherhood issue by the new right. Illuminating the critical connection between fatherhood and male identity, this book should fill a gap in the literature on parenting, the men's movement and gender studies. Robert L. Religious homogamy and marital duration among those who file for divorce in California, 1966-1971.

The hypothesis that having a common religion is associated with more stable marriages is tested using California data on divorce for the period 1966-1971. The results confirm the hypothesis, and the authors note that "religious homogamy among Jewish couples is associated with longer [marriage] duration than any other group. Couples who report no religious affiliation appear to be at greatest risk of early filing for divorce. The religious groupings include the Jewish, the Conservative Protestant, the Liberal Protestant, the Roman Catholic and those with no religious affiliation."

Inequalities for Women in the California Divorce Law

When California introduced the no-fault divorce law in 1970, its intention was to perpetuate equality between men and women through financial and economic means. However this brought about unexpected consequences as more and more cases of women experiencing economic hardships began to surface. The law did not take into account the impaired opportunities marriage brings to women, and thus could not see the influence of intangible property that should have been included into marital assets that are divided equally among couples upon divorce.

Religious Affiliation and Marital Duration Among Those Who File for Divorce in California, 1966-1971

A two percent random sample of couples filing for divorce in California from 1966 through 1971 provides the data base for this study of religious affiliation and duration of marriage to separation. Our goal is twofold: to test the hypothesis that religious affiliation is related to marital duration to separation in the divorcing population, and to examine the conditions under which this relationship holds by using elaboration analysis. Our findings are in the expected direction for the most part, namely, that the percentage of individuals whose marriages lasted five years or more before separation was higher for Jewish and slightly higher for other (Conservative) Protestants, than for the National Council Protestants (Liberal) or Roman Catholics or those reporting no religious affiliation. Thus religious affiliation does make some differences. In addition, this finding holds true for the most part when we controlled on a series of third variables to see what impact they had on the zero order relationship.

Correlates of Marital Duration Among Those Who File for Divorce:

This article delineates some of the characteristics of a random sample of those who filed for divorce in California from 1966 through 1976 with emphasis upon duration of marriage to separation. Findings include the fact that marriages endure to separation somewhat longer when children are present. Moreover, duration of marriage slightly decreases over time, and remains much the same for couples regardless of age at marriage or education. These unexpected findings suggest more research and counseling with emphasis upon the duration of marriage and what this may imply about changing rewards and deprivations of family life.

Articles from the "California Divorce Project": A Case Study of the Concept of Audience

The revival of interest in traditional rhetoric over the past fifteen years or so has brought the concept of audience and the analysis of audience into a place of prominence in many composition textbooks and classes. In journal articles, too, composition theorists have discussed the complex meanings of audience in written discourse. 1 In light of the interest in the concept of audience and the analysis of audience, articles with an identical authorship and similar subject matter published in different journals present an inviting and opportune target for the student of rhetoric. This paper begins by examining three articles written jointly by the same researchers and reporting the results of the same study in different specialized journals. The conclusions from the examination, consistent with much of the recent criticism by composition theorists, call into question the presentation of audience in many textbooks. The conclusions point to the inadequacy of our current heuristic for analyzing audiences, especially for writing the type of papers assigned students in university classes, a type of writing surely the general composition class should prepare students to produce. The examination of the three articles also provides the basis for creating a different heuristic for the analysis of audience based on the rhetorical analysis of discourse. The articles to be examined were written by Judith S. Wallerstein and Joan B. Kelly; they report the results of the California Divorce Project, a five-year study of the effects of divorce on 131 children of 60 divorcing couples whom the authors and their associates studied. The three articles discussed here are part of a group of thirteen written jointly or individually by Wallerstein and Kelly on the Divorce Project that are listed in the Appendix. The articles I have chosen for analysis are from Psychology Today, the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, and the American Journal of Psychiatry. Evaluating the Impact of No-Fault Divorce in California

The adoption of a no-fault divorce law in California in 1970 was accompanied by a number of changes-some intended, some unintended-in the nature of the legal process of divorce and in the patterns of requests and settlements regarding alimony, property, and child custody. Analysis of five samples of 500 decrees of divorce drawn from Los Angeles and San Francisco counties in 1968 and 1972, and from Los Angeles in 1977, suggests that although the process of marital dissolution under the no-fault law is less litigious and perhaps less acrimonious than under the old adversary system, the new law raises some interesting questions about equity in spousal support and property settlements when no one is at fault.

Divorce among Doctors

Analysis of California divorce petitions of 1968 shows that doctors have very low divorce rates. They are married later and longer than other divorcing professionals, and marriages break up at the height, not the outset of their careers. The highest divorce rates in the profession, each posing special problems, appear among women, blacks, and small-town doctors. Blacks may reflect unusual mobility strains because of sharp racial differences in the sex ratios of the college-educated. Peripheral specialists who see few patients have more stable marriages; those in more stressful specialties may incur a greater divorce risk. Divorce-prone persons do not gravitate to particular kinds of professions or medical specialties.
