Diversity of life history and population connectivity of threadfin fish Eleutheronema tetradactylum along the coastal waters of Southern China

Understanding the diversity of life history, life stage connectivity and population is essential to determine the spatial scale over which fish populations operate. Otolith microchemistry analysis is a powerful tool to elucidate the life history and population connectivity of fish, providing important insights to the natal origin and population structure. In this study, we used laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to analyze the chemical composition of otoliths throughout the entire lifetime of endangered fourfinger threadfin species, Eleutheronema tetradactylum. We reconstructed the life history of E. tetradactylum from Southern China collected from different locations over a spatial scale of 1200 km. Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca ratios profiles from otolith core-to-edge analysis suggested two contrasting life history patterns. Based on the differences in early life stages, we identified some fish spending their first year in an estuarine environment with subsequent movement to marine coastal systems, while some fish remaining in the coastal systems throughout their entire early life history stages. The non-metric multi-dimensional scaling showed a strong overlap in otolith core elemental composition, indicating a large-scale connectivity in the life history of E. tetradactylum. The immature fish from different natal origins mixed to a large extent when they fed and overwintered in the extensive offshore waters. Clustering of near core chemistry pointed to three possible sources of nursery for the threadfin fish. This study demonstrated the diversity of life history patterns of E. tetradactylum in Southern Chinese waters. Restoration in egg and larvae densities in coastal waters and estuaries may enhance their population abundances.

A comparison of the breeding biology of the Bornean Whistling-Thrush (Myophonus borneensis) and White-crowned Forktail (Enicurus leschenaulti borneensis)

Advances in understanding geographic patterns of life history variation depend on documentation of life history traits for species in poorly studied regions. In the tropics, most species have not had their life history traits described. We compared the reproductive biology of two closely related Muscicapids, the Bornean Whistling-Thrush (<em>Myophonus borneensis</em>) and the Bornean subspecies of the White-crowned Forktail (<em>Enicurus leschenaulti borneensis</em>), coexisting in Mount Kinabalu Park in Sabah, Malaysia. Both species specialize in riparian habitats, but whistling-thrushes are more adaptable to human presence and can be found nesting on and foraging around buildings, whereas forktails are more wary of humans. We located and monitored 77 forktail nests and 130 whistling-thrush nests from 2009 to 2020. Mean clutch size was 2.00 ± 0.04 for forktails and 1.89 ± 0.04 for whistling-thrushes. Mean egg mass at lay was 4.07 ± 0.04 g for forktails and 11.65 ± 0.12 g for whistling-thrushes. Forktail incubation period (17.0 ± 0.42 d) was slightly shorter than for whistling-thrush (18.6 ± 0.19 d), but both species had similar rates of incubation attentiveness. Nestling periods were much shorter for the forktail (15.89 ± 0.39 d) than the whistling-thrush (24.00 ± 0.20 d). The shorter nestling period was associated with faster growth and higher provisioning rates for forktails than whistling-thrushes. Whistling-thrushes are larger and better able to protect their nests from predation, yielding much lower daily nest predation rates (0.012 ± 0.002) than in forktails (0.042 ± 0.006). Indeed, whistling-thrushes were themselves predators of nestlings and eggs of other passerines, whereas forktails were not. The larger size and lower predation risk may explain the slower growth and development of whistling-thrushes. Both species are vulnerable to climate change and droughts because of their reliance on riparian habitats.

Phenotypic plasticity rather than genotype drives reproductive choices in Hydra populations.

Facultative clonality is associated with complex life cycles where sexual and asexual forms can be exposed to contrasting selection pressures. Facultatively clonal animals often have distinct developmental capabilities that depend on reproductive mode (e.g., negligible senescence and exceptional regeneration ability in asexual individuals, which are lacking in sexual individuals). Understanding how these differences in life history strategies evolved is hampered by limited knowledge of the population structure underlying sexual and asexual forms in nature. Here we studied genetic differentiation of coexisting sexual and asexual Hydra oligactis polyps, a freshwater cnidarian where reproductive mode-dependent life history patterns are observed. We collected asexual and sexual polyps from 13 Central European water bodies and used restriction-site associated DNA sequencing to infer population structure. We detected high relatedness among populations and signs that hydras might spread with resting eggs through zoochory. We found no genetic structure with respect to mode of reproduction (asexual vs. sexual). On the other hand, clear evidence was found for phenotypic plasticity in mode of reproduction, as polyps inferred to be clones differed in reproductive mode. Moreover, we detected two cases of apparent sex change (males and females found within the same clonal lineages) in this species with supposedly stable sexes. Our study describes population genetic structure in Hydra for the first time, highlights the role of phenotypic plasticity in generating patterns of life history variation, and contributes to understanding the evolution of reproductive mode-dependent life history variation in coexisting asexual and sexual forms.

Variability of weaning age in mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei).

Weaning is a key life history milestone for mammals that represents both the end of nutritional investment from the perspective of mothers and the start of complete nutritional independence for the infants. The age at weaning may vary depending on ecological, social, and demographic factors experienced by the mother and infant. Bwindi mountain gorillas live in different environmental conditions and have longer interbirth intervals than their counterparts in the Virunga Volcanoes, yet other life history characteristics of this population remain less well known. We use long-term data from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda to examine factors related to weaning age. We analyzed data on infants born in four mountain gorilla groups in Bwindi to quantify their age of weaning (defined as last nipple contact) and to test if the sex of offspring, parity, and dominance rank of mother influences age of weaning. We also compared the age at weaning and time to conception after resumption of mating in Bwindi and Virunga gorillas. Bwindi gorillas were weaned at an average age of 57.5 months. No difference was found between age of weaning for primiparous and multiparous mothers, nor did maternal dominance rank influence age of weaning, but sons were weaned at a later age than daughters. The majority of Bwindi mothers were still suckling when they resumed mating and mothers generally conceived before they weaned their previous offspring. The age of weaning was significantly later in Bwindi than in Virunga gorillas. After mothers resumed mating, the time to conceiving the next offspring was not significantly longer for Bwindi females than Virungas females (6 vs. 4 months). Later weaning age for sons than daughters is similar to findings of other studies of great apes. Bwindi mountain gorillas are weaned at approximately the same age as western gorillas and chimpanzees, which is more than a year later than Virunga mountain gorillas. The results of this study suggest that variation in ecological conditions of populations living in close geographic proximity can result in variation in life history patterns, which has implications for understanding the evolution of the unique life history patterns of humans.

Geographic Variation in the Life History and Morphology of the Pacific Geoduck Panopea generosa

Evaluating the spatial scale of biological variation in marine species aids understanding of the ways in which environmental selection pressures can shape life histories, population demography, and morphological traits. The Pacific geoduck Panopea generosa is an ideal candidate to investigate patterns of life history variation and morphological plasticity, as the species occurs over a large geographic range, inhabits different marine environments, and experiences intense fishing pressure in some locations. Six populations were sampled from Washington to Baja California (Mexico), from a mix of subtidal and intertidal habitats, to evaluate evidence for geographic variation in demography, life history, and shell morphology. Results provided evidence for a latitudinal cline with larger clams occurring in locations characterized by colder water temperature. Von Bertalanffy growth model analyses revealed significant spatial variation in asymptotic lengths across sampling locations. Correlations between environmental variables (sea surface temperatures and chlorophyll a) and growth parameters indicated that clams reached larger sizes at locations that were cooler and had higher primary productivity. Age structure and longevity analyses demonstrated that life expectancy was significantly lower at intertidal sites than at subtidal sites, potentially in response to increased fishing pressure at sites more easily accessed by humans at low tide. Morphological analyses (i.e., geometric morphometrics) revealed significant spatial differences in shell shape that did not follow a latitudinal pattern, but may be better explained by site-specific differences in sediment characteristics or other selective pressures in the environment. In a management context, these results may inform efforts to develop spatially explicit regulations for the Pacific geoduck fishery. Finally, this study provides a general framework for evaluating demographic variability in shellfish populations across large spatial scales.

Breeding phenology, provisioning behaviour, and unusual patterns of life history variation across an anthropogenic heterogeneous landscape.

Understanding how resource use and life history variation influence a population's response to modified, fragmented landscapes is a major challenge for ecologists. We investigated the phenology, life history decisions and provisioning behaviour of a generalist passerine-the great tit-across a heavily managed woodland landscape. Contrary to most previous studies on this species, reproductive investment and success were lower in deciduous than in coniferous woodland fragments. This could not be explained by differences in provisioning behaviour; instead population density was considerably higher in deciduous woodlands, suggesting birds did not follow an ideal free distribution. Clutch size declined with lay date amongst populations breeding in coniferous woodland fragments, but these populations also displayed pronounced seasonal declines in the proportion of fledglings produced per egg and fledgling mass. In contrast, and against patterns observed in other similar study systems, clutch size did not change with lay date in mixed-species deciduous woodland fragments. Furthermore, the proportion of young fledged and fledgling condition remained stable throughout the season, even though the quality of food provisioned to nestlings increased over the season. Local recruitment was negligible, suggesting that plasticity rather than natural selection played a key role in driving the patterns observed. The unusual patterns we report are likely explained by the fragmented nature of the landscape, and unreliable phenological cues in a mixed-species tree community coupled with low food availability. They contrast with those reported from most other populations situated in continuous woodland, demonstrating that caution is needed when generalising across different contexts and ecosystems.

Comparative demography of commercially-harvested snappers and an emperor from American Samoa

The age-based life history of two commercially-important species of snapper (Lutjanidae) and one emperor (Lethrinidae) were characterized from the nearshore fishery of Tutuila, American Samoa. Examination of sagittal otoliths across multiple months and years confirmed the annual deposition of increments and highlighted marked variation in life-history patterns among the three meso-predator species. The humpback red snapper Lutjanus gibbus is a medium-bodied gonochoristic species which exhibits striking sexual dimorphism in length-at-age and consequent growth trajectories and has a life span estimated to be at least 27 years. The yellow-lined snapper Lutjanus rufolineatus is a small-bodied gonochore with weak sexual dimorphism, early maturation, and a short life span of at least 12 years. The yellow-lip emperor Lethrinus xanthochilus is a large-bodied species with a moderate life span (estimated to be at least 19 years in this study), rapid initial growth, and a more complex sexual ontogeny likely involving pre- or post-maturational sex change, although this remains unresolved at present. Ratios of natural to fishing mortality indicate a low level of prevailing exploitation for all three species, which is supported by low proportions of immature female length classes captured by the fishery. However, considerable demographic variability among the three species highlights the value of detailed age-based information as a necessary component for informing monitoring efforts and future management decisions.

Breeding season length and nest mortality drive cryptic life history variation in Dark-eyed Juncos (Junco hyemalis) breeding across a montane elevational gradient

ABSTRACT The manner in which individual life history traits respond to the environment and to each other, and how these traits combine to form overall patterns of life history variation, remains poorly characterized in wild populations. We monitored breeding Dark-eyed Juncos (Junco hyemalis) across a 700-m elevational range. We compared breeding season length, temporal patterns of breeding activity, adult body size, clutch size, brood size, nestling quality, and nest mortality among elevations. Selection of trilateral continuums of life history strategies under food web interactions

The study of life history strategies has a long history in ecology and evolution, but determining the underlying mechanisms driving the evolution of life history variation and its consequences for population regulation remains a major challenge. In this study, a food web model with constant environmental conditions was used to demonstrate how multi-species consumer–resource interactions (food-web interactions) can create variation in the duration of the adult stage, age of maturation, and fecundity among species. The model included three key ecological processes: size-dependent species interactions, energetics, and transition among developmental stages. Resultant patterns of life history variation were consistent with previous empirical observations of the life history strategies of aquatic organisms referred to as periodic, equilibrium, and opportunistic strategies (trilateral continuums of life history strategies). Results from the simulation model suggest that these three life history strategies can emerge from food web interactions even when abiotic environmental conditions are held constant.

Distributional range, ecology, and mating system of the Cape mole-rat (Georychus capensis) family Bathyergidae

Interpopulation variation in life-history patterns are influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Life-history patterns have been intensely studied in the eusocial African bathyergid species, largely neglecting the solitary species. Of these solitary genera, the Cape mole-rat (Georychus capensis (Pallas, 1778)) is endemic to South Africa with a disjunct distribution across its range. Knowledge regarding this species is rudimentary; therefore, this study aimed to investigate the current distribution of the species with particular attention to common ecological variables, differences in body size between localities and sexes, as well as its reproduction and mating system. Georychus is a habitat specialist restricted to specific ecological areas. A lack of sexual size dimorphism and correlation between male testis size and number of females in the population, suggests a polygynous mating system, facilitated by the spatial distribution of the sexes. A positive relationship between male testes size and percentage of females in populations sampled suggests that larger sperm reserves (i.e., larger testes) are required in populations with a higher percentage of females. In addition, mating variables (testicular size and litter size) are linked to ecological factors (elevation, aridity, soil type, and vegetation type) that could impact mate searching, mating success, and food resources.

Life history timing, but not body size, of Mysis salemaai (Crustacea: Mysida) conserved across a trophic gradient at its southern distribution

The mysid shrimp Mysis salemaai is a key component of many lake food webs. However, despite its strong declines in some systems, information on its life history is rudimental. We explored variation in life history patterns of M. salemaai and how this varies with key environmental gradients at the southern range of its distribution. We found that body mass of reproductive females and individual larvae varied among lakes and increased with phosphorus concentrations, whereas growth rates were associated positively with temperature. However, even across strongly contrasting nutrient conditions, M. salemaai had invariant life history timing with a single, synchronised winter recruitment followed by parent mortality. This contrasts with variable reproductive timing of the species reported across the Baltic Sea, probably owing to differences in ambient conditions or genotypes. The highly variable body size at maturity likely facilitates matching of reproduction with seasonal pulses of planktonic food across a broad range of growing conditions. We conclude that current population declines of M. salemaai warrant further investigations into the temporal plasticity of environmental matching.

Does low daily energy expenditure drive low metabolic capacity in the tropical robin, Turdus grayi?

Temperate and tropical birds possess divergent life history strategies. Physiological parameters including energy metabolism correlate with the life history such that tropical species with a slower 'pace of life' have lower resting and maximal metabolic rates than temperate congeners. To better understand the physiological mechanisms underlying these differences, we investigated the relationship of metabolic capacity, muscle oxidative capacity and activity patterns to variation in life history patterns in American robins (Turdus migratorius), while resident in central North America and Clay-colored robins (Turdus grayi) resident in Panama. We measured summit metabolism [Formula: see text] in birds from both tropical and temperate habitats and found that the temperate robins have a 60% higher metabolic capacity. We also measured the field metabolic rate (FMR) of free-living birds using heart rate (HR) telemetry and found that temperate robins' daily energy expenditure was also 60% higher. Thus, [Formula: see text] and FMR both reflect life history differences between the species. Further, both species operate at a nearly identical ~50% of their thermogenic capacity throughout a given day. As a potential mechanism to explain differences in activity and metabolic capacity, we ask whether oxidative properties of flight muscle are altered in accordance with life history variation and found minimal differences in oxidative capacity of skeletal muscle. These data demonstrate a close relationship between thermogenic capacity and daily activity in free-living birds. Further, they suggest that the slow pace of life in tropical birds may be related to the maintenance of low activity rather than functional capacity of the muscle tissue.

Seasonal variation in the behaviour of a short-lived rodent

BackgroundShort lived, iteroparous animals in seasonal environments experience variable social and environmental conditions over their lifetime. Animals can be divided into those with a “young-of-the-year” life history (YY, reproducing and dying in the summer of birth) and an “overwinter” life history (OW, overwintering in a subadult state before reproducing next spring).We investigated how behavioural patterns across the population were affected by season and sex, and whether variation in behaviour reflects the variation in life history patterns of each season. Applications of pace-of-life (POL) theory would suggest that long-lived OW animals are shyer in order to increase survival, and YY are bolder in order to increase reproduction. Therefore, we expected that in winter and spring samples, when only OW can be sampled, the animals should be shyer than in summer and autumn, when both OW and YY animals can be sampled.We studied common vole (Microtus arvalis) populations, which express typical, intra-annual density fluctuation. We captured a total of 492 voles at different months over 3 years and examined boldness and activity level with two standardised behavioural experiments.ResultsBehavioural variables of the two tests were correlated with each other. Boldness, measured as short latencies in both tests, was extremely high in spring compared to other seasons. Activity level was highest in spring and summer, and higher in males than in females.ConclusionBeing bold in laboratory tests may translate into higher risk-taking in nature by being more mobile while seeking out partners or valuable territories. Possible explanations include asset-protection, with OW animals being rather old with low residual reproductive value in spring. Therefore, OW may take higher risks during this season. Offspring born in spring encounter a lower population density and may have higher reproductive value than offspring of later cohorts. A constant connection between life history and animal personality, as suggested by the POL theory, however, was not found. Nevertheless, correlations of traits suggest the existence of animal personalities. In conclusion, complex patterns of population dynamics, seasonal variation in life histories, and variability of behaviour due to asset-protection may cause complex seasonal behavioural dynamics in a population.

Plasticity of European flounder life history patterns discloses alternatives to catadromy

European flounder (Platychthys flesus) life history patterns were investigated at three locations along a latitudinal gradient (Minho- N-Portugal, Gironde- SW-France, Seine- N-France). We used coupled Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca otolith signatures and microstructure to retrospectively determine habitats occupied by flounder during early life history stages and spawning events. Our results showed a high diversity of life history patterns within each sampling location and between locations. Egg signatures showed two distinct origins, coastal or freshwater, suggesting that flounders may use two different spawning habitats. The coastal type egg signature was dominant at all locations, and the freshwater egg signature was most frequent in the Seine. During pre-metamorphosis, the predominant habitat for flounder larvae varied between all sites. The freshwater habitat was the predominant habitat for the Seine’s pre-metamorphic and metamorphosed flounders (40%); while in the Gironde and in the Minho, the predominant habitats were the coast (52%) and the estuary (79%), respectively. The diversity of life history patterns was greatest in the Gironde (16), than in the Seine (12) or in the Minho (9). During the first year of life of the Seine’s flounder, most fish stayed in freshwater environments (40%). This pattern was the third most frequent for Gironde flounder (12%), but it was not observed in flounder captured in the Minho. Our study suggested that flounder use estuarine and coastal spawning grounds. Hence, catadromy in European flounder may be facultative behavior, and the species exhibits great plasticity in the life history patterns, which adaptative value still remains to be investigated.

Life history trait diversity of native freshwater fishes in North America

Ecology of Freshwater Fish 2010: 19: 390–400. © 2010 John Wiley &amp; Sons A/SAbstract – Freshwater fish diversity is shaped by phylogenetic constraints acting on related taxa and biogeographic constraints operating on regional species pools. In the present study, we use a trait‐based approach to examine taxonomic and biogeographic patterns of life history diversity of freshwater fishes in North America (exclusive of Mexico). Multivariate analysis revealed strong support for a tri‐lateral continuum model with three end‐point strategies defining the equilibrium (low fecundity, high juvenile survivorship), opportunistic (early maturation, low juvenile survivorship), and periodic (late maturation, high fecundity, low juvenile survivorship) life histories. Trait composition and diversity varied greatly between and within major families. Finally, we used occurrence data for large watersheds (n = 350) throughout the United States and Canada to examine geographic patterns of life history variation. Distinct patterns of life history strategies were discernible and deemed congruent with biogeographic processes and selection pressures acting on life history strategies of freshwater fishes throughout North America.

Life history variation between high and low elevation subspecies of horned larks Eremophila spp.

Environmental variation along elevational gradients can strongly influence life history strategies in vertebrates. We investigated variation in life history patterns between a horned lark subspecies nesting in high elevation alpine habitat Eremophila alpestris articola and a second subspecies in lower elevation grassland and sandy shoreline habitats E. a. strigata. Given the shorter breeding season and colder climate at the northern alpine site we expected E. a. articola to be larger, have lower fecundity and higher apparent survival than E. a. strigata. As predicted, E. a. articola was larger and the trend was toward higher apparent adult survival for E. a. articola than E. a. strigata (0.69 vs 0.51). Contrary to our predictions, however, there was a trend toward higher fecundity for E. a. articola (1.75 female fledglings/female/year vs 0.91). The larger clutch sizes, higher nest survival, and shorter renesting intervals have apparently allowed E. a. articola to compensate for the short breeding season. Estimates of population growth rate (λ) predicted a stable population for E. a. articola (λ=1.00) and a rapidly declining population for E. a. strigata (λ=0.62) this may provide an explanation for the deviations from our expectation of higher reproduction in E. a. strigata. We suggest that anthropogenic influences (e.g. habitat loss and degradation and increased nest predator abundance) to E. a. strigata nesting sites may be responsible for reducing annual fecundity to the point where it is almost half that of E. a. articola. This result suggests that human influenced habitat changes that, in turn, change demographic rates may result in vital rates that do not accurately reflect historically divergent life histories between the two groups. Our results underscore the importance of including estimates of multiple traits in life history studies to provide insight into compensatory interactions among components of demographic rates and to identify recent changes to demographic rates that might result in a mismatch between observed and predicted life history strategies.

Local adaptation in moss life histories: population-level variation and a reciprocal transplant experiment

We examine the extent of population-level differentiation in life history traits of Pogonatum aloides, Polytrichum commune and Polytrichum juniperinum (Polytrichaceae) between upland and lowland localities within Britain. Reciprocal transplant studies are used to estimate the relative importance of genetic versus environmental effects on observed differences. We demonstrate significant life history differentiation between moss populations, and show that at least some of these are genetically determined, although environment and phenotypic plasticity are also significant components of the observed variation. The transplant experiments indicate divergence among populations in plasticity of male reproductive effort and of investment in vegetative shoots by females. Two tradeoffs are identified; one between the number and the size of spores, and the second between reproduction by spores versus vegetative reproduction. The patterns of life history variation observed between populations of Polytrichum juniperinum are consistent with selection along these implied tradeoff curves, and we propose that they reflect selective pressures arising from the spatial and demographic distribution of mortality at upland versus lowland sites. The results underscore the need for more studies of intra-specific life history variation in mosses.

Can sexual selection drive female life histories? A comparative study on Galliform birds

Sexual selection has been identified as a major evolutionary force shaping male life history traits but its impact on female life history evolution is less clear. Here we examine the impact of sexual selection on three key female traits (body size, egg size and clutch size) in Galliform birds. Using comparative independent contrast analyses and directional discrete analyses, based on published data and a new genera-level supertree phylogeny of Galliform birds, we investigated how sexual selection [quantified as sexual size dimorphism (SSD) and social mating system (MS)] affects these three important female traits. We found that female body mass was strongly and positively correlated with egg size but not with clutch size, and that clutch size decreased as egg size increased. We established that SSD was related to MS, and then used SSD as a proxy of the strength of sexual selection. We found both a positive relationship between SSD and female body mass and egg size and that increases in female body mass and egg size tend to occur following increases in SSD in this bird order. This pattern of female body mass increases lagging behind changes in SSD, established using our directional discrete analysis, suggests that female body mass increases as a response to increases in the level of sexual selection and not simply through a strong genetic relationship with male body mass. This suggests that sexual selection is linked to changes in female life history traits in Galliformes and we discuss how this link may shape patterns of life history variation among species.

Evolution of life history traits in Leporidae: a test of nest predation and seasonality hypotheses

Recently, it has been proposed that adult mortality schedules may be responsible for latitudinal patterns of life history variation in passerine birds, whereas nest predation only could explain within latitude patterns. Unfortunately, no independent test has been performed regarding the importance of nest predation with different taxa. In the present study, seasonality and nest predation hypotheses explaining variations in gestation time and litter size in 17 lagomorph species were tested. Among latitude patterns were analysed using the phylogenetic independent contrast method of Felsenstein and within latitude patterns were analysed by the pairwise comparative method. The results obtained indicate that latitudinal patterns observed in both variables are explained by different factors: seasonality for litter size and nest predation for gestation time. Litter size variations within latitudes are also explained by differences in nest predation, supporting previous hypotheses. In conclusion, the present study suggests that, when compared among latitudes, different life history traits (e.g. litter size and gestation time) may be shaped by different selective forces and that the effects of nest predation may be high both within and between latitudes.

Stable isotopes as indicators of altitudinal distributions and movements in an Ecuadorean hummingbird community.

Altitudinal migration and dispersal is an important component of the life history of several temperate and tropical birds but remains poorly understood due to the limited success of mark and recapture techniques. Stable isotopes of hydrogen (deltaD) in rainfall, and to a lesser extent, carbon (delta13C) in plants are known to change with altitude and hence may provide the basis of a technique for tracking the altitudinal movements in birds and other wildlife. We investigated the potential for this technique by measuring delta13C, deltaD, and delta15N values in tail feathers of eight species of hummingbirds ( Phaethornis malaris, P. syrmatophorus, P. guy, Adelomyia melanogenys, Coeligena torquata, C. lutetiae, Metallura baroni, M. williami) along an altitudinal gradient (300-3,290 m asl) in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador. Feather delta13C and deltaD values were correlated and each changed significantly with elevation above 400 m. In general, we found good agreement between feather deltaD values and those predicted from a generalized relationship of precipitation and surface water deltaD with altitude. Similarly, feather delta13C values showed an enrichment of approximately 1.5 per thousand per 1,000 m over the linear portion of the elevational response. Stable-nitrogen isotope values were variable, and so did not provide useful information on elevation in birds, apart from trophic effects. Overall there appears to be good potential for using the (deltaD, delta13C) stable isotope approach to track altitudinal movements and to elucidate previously unrecognized patterns of life history variation in both temperate and tropical species that migrate across elevational isotopic gradients.
