The effects of hemispheric dominance, literacy acquisition, and handedness on the development of visuospatial attention: A study in preschoolers and second graders

A tendency to over-attend the left side of the space (i.e., pseudoneglect) has been repeatedly reported in Western adult populations and is supposed to reflect a right hemisphere dominance in the control of visuospatial attention. This neurobiological hypothesis has been partially challenged by growing evidence showing that pseudoneglect is profoundly triggered by cultural practices such as reading and writing habits. Accordingly, more recent theoretical accounts suggest a strict coupling between nature and nurture dimensions at the origins of such bias. To further explore this possibility, here we first administered a digitized cancellation task to right-handed Western children before and after literacy acquisition. Results showed an incremental leftward shift of attention in the cancellation of the first target and an increasing preference for a left-to-right visual search from preschoolers to second graders. Yet, despite these differences, the overall distribution of visuospatial attention was biased to the left in both groups. To explore the role of handedness in visuospatial asymmetries, we also tested a group of left-handed second graders. Results showed an impact of handedness on visuospatial performance, with an accentuated rightward-oriented visual search for left-handed children, although the overall distribution of attention was again biased to the left hemispace. Taken together, these findings do not provide support to a pure neurobiological view of visuospatial biases. Rather, our study indicates that the control of visuospatial attention is mediated by a dynamic interplay among biological (i.e., right hemisphere dominance), biomechanical (i.e., hand dominance), and cultural (i.e., reading habits) factors.

Grasping remaps the distribution of visuospatial attention and enhances competing action activation.

We examined how action goals influence the distribution of visuospatial attention near the body (Experiment 1) and how the temporal relationship between distractors and targets modifies shifts in visuospatial attention (Experiment 2). Targets were light emitting diodes (LEDs) in the left and right hemispace of a visual display. Following left or right target illumination, participants reached to point-to or grasp target object in blocked trials. Coincident with target onset, a distractor LED illuminated in the same or opposite hemispace between the initiation point and target, or no distractor appeared. In Experiment 1, during grasping there was a larger temporal interference effect (slower reach initiation) than with pointing. When grasping versus pointing, participants deviated more towards same-side distractors and away from opposite-side distractors. In Experiment 2, distractors onset 200ms prior to (-200-ms), coincident with (0 ms), or 200ms following (+200 ms) the target. For both reach types, -200-ms distractors had greater onset temporal interference than 0 ms and +200-ms distractors. For grasping, +200 ms distractors had larger temporal interference than 0 ms distractors. For -200-ms, reach trajectories deviated more towards opposite-side distractors and away from same-side distractors, the reverse of the pattern for 0 ms and +200-ms distractors.

Visual Processing Asymmetries in Change Detection

Change detection is critically dependent on attentional mechanisms. However, the relation between an asymmetrical distribution of visuo-spatial attention and the detection of changes in visual scenes is not clear. Spatial tasks are known to induce a stronger activation of the right hemisphere. The effects of such visual processing asymmetries induced by a spatial task on change detection were investigated. When required to detect changes in the left and in the right visual fields, participants were significantly faster in detecting changes on the left than on the right. Importantly, this left-side superiority in change detection is not influenced by inspection time, suggesting a critical role of visual processing benefit for the left visual field.

Is Visuospatial Attention Controlled by a Unitary Process Or Separate Processes?

Visuospatial attention facilitates search. Search facilitation is not instantaneous, but develops over time. Furthermore, the time necessary for the first occurrence of search facilitation varies with different processes. One line of research concerned with the orienting of visuospatial attention indicates that an involuntary process facilitates search faster when compared to a voluntary process. Another line of research concerned with the distribution of visuospatial attention has shown that a constricted focus facilitates search faster than an enlarged focus. The differences in search facilitation between these processes, however, have not been directly compared in the same study. Thus, it is unclear whether visuospatial attention is governed by a unitary process or separate processes. The results of this experiment support the separate process view, specifically an involuntary and voluntary process that is independent of the component process of the distribution of visuospatial attention.

Effects of arousing emotional scenes on the distribution of visuospatial attention: changes with aging and early subcortical vascular dementia

Background The modulation of attention by emotionally arousing stimuli is highly important for each individual's social function. Disturbances of emotional processing are a supportive feature for the diagnosis of subcortical vascular dementia (SVD). We address here whether these disturbances might be useful as an early disease marker. Methods In order to examine the modulation of visual attention by emotionally arousing stimuli of different valence, 12 elderly patients with early SVD, 12 age-comparable healthy adults and 12 young healthy subjects were studied while looking at pairs of pictures from the International Affective Picture Battery that were either neutral–neutral, neutral–positive or neutral–negative in terms of emotional content. Eye movements were recorded with an infrared eye-tracking system. The direction of the first saccade and the dwell time during the 10 s of presentation were measured and compared among groups with parametric tests. Results All subjects showed a modulation of initial attentional orienting as well as a higher percentage of dwell time towards the pictures containing emotional material. Patients with SVD and old controls did not differ in either experimental measure. Young patients showed a stronger bias towards emotionally negative material than both groups of older individuals. Conclusions Modulation of visuospatial attention is preserved in early SVD. This might have implications for therapeutic interventional approaches. A weakened sustained attention towards negative but not positive emotional pictures in the elderly is in accordance with the socioemotional selectivity theory, describing a relative selection of positive stimuli with aging.

Modeling visuospatial perception in neglect patients.

The spatial distortion hypothesis is one of several theories that explain certain aspects of neglect in patients with right parietal lesions. To determine whether a distorted representation of space can account for the performance of neglect patients in different visuospatial tasks, we asked 26 neglect patients to: (1) bisect horizontal lines and (2) to compare the width of two horizontally aligned bars. A simple mathematical model compatible with the idea of a stationary distortion of represented space in egocentric coordinates explained the results of the line-bisection task. A second model that had basically the same structure and was compatible with the idea of a distorted egocentric representation based on a dynamic remapping of space approximated the size-comparison data. These results support the view that abnormalities observed in the line-bisection and size-comparison tasks are due to a distorted internal representation of the external world. Certain findings suggest that this distortion could be based on a dynamic mapping of space determined by the distribution of visuospatial attention.
