The miniJPAS Survey: The radial distribution of star formation rates in faint X-ray active galactic nuclei

We study the impact of black hole nuclear activity on both the global and radial star formation rate (SFR) profiles in X-ray-selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the field of miniJPAS, the precursor of the much wider J-PAS project. Our sample includes 32 AGN with $z<0.3$ detected via the XMM-Newton and Chandra surveys. For comparison, we assembled a control sample of 71 star-forming (SF) galaxies with similar magnitudes, sizes, and redshifts. To derive the global properties of both the AGN and the control SF sample, we used CIGALE to fit the spectral energy distributions derived from the 56 narrowband and 4 broadband filters from miniJPAS. We find that AGN tend to reside in more massive galaxies than their SF counterparts. After matching samples based on stellar mass and comparing their SFRs and specific SFRs (sSFRs), no significant differences appear. This suggests that the presence of AGN does not strongly influence overall star formation. However, when we used miniJPAS as an integral field unit (IFU) to dissect galaxies along their position angle, a different picture emerges. We find that AGN tend to be more centrally concentrated in mass with respect to SF galaxies. Moreover, we find a suppression of the sSFR up to 1R$ _e $ and then an enhancement beyond 1R$ _e $, strongly contrasting with the decreasing radial profile of sSFRs in SF galaxies. This could point to an inside-out quenching of AGN host galaxies. Additionally, we examined how the radial profiles of the sSFRs in AGN and SF galaxies depend on galaxy morphology, by dividing our sample into disk-dominated (DD), pseudo-bulge (PB), and bulge-dominated (BD) systems. In DD systems, AGN exhibit a flat sSFR profile in the central regions and enhanced star formation beyond 1R$ _e $, contrasting with SF galaxies. In PB systems, SF galaxies show a decreasing sSFR profile, while AGN hosts exhibit an inside-out quenching scenario. In BD systems, both populations demonstrate consistent flat sSFR profiles. These findings suggest that the reason we do not see differences on a global scale is because star formation is suppressed in the central regions and enhanced in the outer regions of AGN host galaxies. While limited in terms of sample size, this work highlights the potential of the upcoming J-PAS as a wide-field low-resolution IFU for thousands of nearby galaxies and AGN.

Insights into Galaxy Morphology and Star Formation: Unveiling Filamentary Structures around an Extreme Overdensity at z ∼ 1.5 Traced by [O ii] Emitters

We explore the morphological features and star formation activities of [O ii] emitters in the COSMOS UltraDeep field at z ∼ 1.5 using JWST NIRCam data from the COSMOS-Web survey and Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam. We also report the discovery of large filamentary structures traced by [O ii] emitters surrounding an extremely overdense core with a galaxy number density ∼11× higher than the field average. These structures span over 50 cMpc, underscoring their large scale in the cosmic web at this epoch. After matching the stellar-mass distributions, the core galaxies show a higher frequency of disturbances (50% ± 9%) than those in the outskirts (41% ± 9%) and the field (21% ± 5%), indicative of more frequent mergers and interactions in the innermost ≲1.′5 region. Additionally, we observe that specific star formation rates are elevated in denser environments. A Kolmogorov–Smirnov test comparing the distribution of specific star formation rates of core and field galaxies yields a p-value of 0.02, suggesting an enhancement of star formation activity driven by the dense environment. Our findings underscore the environmental impact on galaxy evolution during a pivotal cosmic epoch and set the stage for further investigation with the increasing larger data from upcoming surveys.

DIISC-III. Signatures of Stellar Disk Growth in Nearby Galaxies

We explore the growth of the stellar disks in 14 nearby spiral galaxies as part of the Deciphering the Interplay between the Interstellar medium, Stars, and the Circumgalactic medium (DIISC) survey. We study the radial distribution of specific star formation rates (sSFRs) and investigate the ratio of the difference in the outer and inner sSFRs (ΔsSFR = sSFRout – sSFRin) of the disk and the total sSFR, ΔsSFR/sSFR, to quantify disk growth. We find ΔsSFR/sSFR and the H i gas fraction to show a mild correlation of Spearman’s ρ = 0.30, indicating that star formation and disk growth are likely to proceed outward in galactic disks with high H i gas fractions. The H i gas fractions and ΔsSFR/sSFR of the galaxies also increase with the distance to the nearest L ⋆ neighbor, suggesting that galaxies are likely to sustain the cold gas in their interstellar medium and exhibit inside-out growth in isolated environments. However, the H i content in their circumgalactic medium (CGM), probed by the Lyα equivalent width (W Lyα ) excess, is observed to be suppressed in isolated environments, as is apparent from the strong anticorrelation between the W Lyα excess and the distance to the fifth nearest L ⋆ neighbor (Spearman’s ρ = −0.62). As expected, W Lyα is also found to be suppressed in cluster galaxies. We find no relation between the W Lyα excess of the detected CGM absorber and ΔsSFR/sSFR, implying that the enhancement and suppression of the circumgalactic H i gas does not affect the direction in which star formation proceeds in a galactic disk or vice versa.

Do Minor Interactions Trigger Star Formation in Galaxy Pairs?

We analyze the galaxy pairs in a set of volume limited samples from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to study the effects of minor interactions on the star formation rate (SFR) and color of galaxies. We carefully design control samples of isolated galaxies by matching the stellar mass and redshift of the minor pairs. The SFR distributions and color distributions in the minor pairs differ from their controls at >99% significance level. We also simultaneously match the control galaxies in stellar mass, redshift and local density to assess the role of the environment. The null hypothesis can be rejected at >99% confidence level even after matching the environment. Our analysis shows a quenching in the minor pairs where the degree of quenching decreases with the increasing pair separation and plateaus beyond 50 kpc. We also prepare a sample of minor pairs with H α line information. We calculate the SFR of these galaxies using the H α line and repeat our analysis. We observe a quenching in the H α sample too. We find that the majority of the minor pairs are quiescent systems that could be quenched due to minor interactions. Combining data from the Galaxy Zoo and Galaxy Zoo 2, we find that only ∼1% galaxies have a dominant bulge, 4%–7% galaxies host a bar and 5%–10% of galaxies show active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity in minor pairs. This indicates that the presence of bulge, bar or AGN activity plays an insignificant role in quenching the galaxies in minor pairs. The more massive companion satisfies the criteria for mass quenching in most of the minor pairs. We propose that the stripping and starvation likely caused the quenching in the less massive companion at a later stage of evolution.

Surrogate Forward Models for Population Inference on Compact Binary Mergers

Rapidly growing catalogs of compact binary mergers from advanced gravitational wave detectors allow us to explore the astrophysics of massive stellar binaries. Merger observations can constrain the uncertain parameters that describe the underlying processes in the evolution of stars and binary systems in population models. In this paper, we demonstrate that binary black hole populations—in particular, their detection rates, chirp masses, and redshifts—can be used to measure cosmological parameters describing the redshift-dependent star formation rate and metallicity distribution. We present a method that uses artificial neural networks to emulate binary population synthesis computer models, and construct a fast, flexible, parallelizable surrogate model that we use for inference.

Questioning Planck-selected star-forming high-redshift galaxy protoclusters and their fate

About 2100 star-forming galaxy protocluster candidates at z ∼ 1 − 4 were identified at sub-millimetre wavelengths in the Planck all-sky survey. Follow-up spectroscopic observations of a few candidates have confirmed the presence of actual galaxy overdensities with large star formation rates (SFRs). In this work, we use state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations to investigate whether the Planck high-z sub-millimetre sources (PHz) are progenitors of massive clusters at z = 0. To match the PHz sources with simulated halos, we select the most star-forming (SF) halos in 19 redshift bins from z = 3 to z = 1.3 in the TNG300 simulation of the IllustrisTNG project. At each redshift, the total SFR of the simulated protocluster candidates is computed from the SFR of all the galaxies within an aperture corresponding to the Planck beam size, including those along the line of sight (LOS). The simulations reproduce the Planck-derived SFRs as the sum of both the SFR of at least one of the most SF high-z halos and the average contribution from SF sources along the LOS. Focusing on the spectroscopically confirmed z ∼ 2 PHz protoclusters, we compare the observed properties of their galaxy members with those in the most SF simulated halos. We find a good agreement in the stellar mass and SFR distributions, and in the galaxy number counts, but the SFR-stellar mass relation of the simulated galaxies tends to be shifted to lower SFRs with respect to the observed galaxies. Based on the estimated final masses of the simulated halos, we infer that between 63% and 72% of the Planck-selected protoclusters will evolve into massive galaxy clusters by z = 0. Despite contamination from star-forming galaxies along the LOS, we thus confirm the efficiency of Planck in selecting star-forming protoclusters at cosmic noon with the simulations, and provide a new criterion for selecting the most massive cluster progenitors at high-z, using observables such as the number of galaxy members and their SFR distribution.

Please Repeat: Strong Lensing of Gravitational Waves as a Probe of Compact Binary and Galaxy Populations

Abstract Strong gravitational lensing of gravitational wave sources offers a novel probe of both the lens galaxy and the binary source population. In particular, the strong lensing event rate and the time-delay distribution of multiply imaged gravitational-wave binary coalescence events can be used to constrain the mass distribution of the lenses as well as the intrinsic properties of the source population. We calculate the strong lensing event rate for a range of second- (2G) and third-generation (3G) detectors, including Advanced LIGO/Virgo, A+, Einstein Telescope (ET), and Cosmic Explorer (CE). For 3G detectors, we find that ∼0.1% of observed events are expected to be strongly lensed. We predict detections of ∼1 lensing pair per year with A+, and ∼50 pairs per year with ET/CE. These rates are highly sensitive to the characteristic galaxy velocity dispersion, σ *, implying that observations of the rates will be a sensitive probe of lens properties. We explore using the time-delay distribution between multiply imaged gravitational-wave sources to constrain properties of the lenses. We find that 3G detectors would constrain σ * to ∼21% after 5 yr. Finally, we show that the presence or absence of strong lensing within the detected population provides useful insights into the source redshift and mass distribution out to redshifts beyond the peak of the star formation rate, which can be used to constrain formation channels and their relation to the star formation rate and delay-time distributions for these systems.

On the origin of red spirals: does assembly bias play a role?

The formation of the red spirals is a puzzling issue in the standard picture of galaxy formation and evolution. Most studies attribute the colour of the red spirals to different environmental effects. We analyze a volume limited sample from the SDSS to study the roles of small-scale and large-scale environments on the colour of spiral galaxies. We compare the star formation rate, stellar age and stellar mass distributions of the red and blue spirals and find statistically significant differences between them at 99.9% confidence level. The red spirals inhabit significantly denser regions than the blue spirals, explaining some of the observed differences in their physical properties. However, the differences persist in all types of environments, indicating that the local density alone is not sufficient to explain the origin of the red spirals. Using an information theoretic framework, we find a small but non-zero mutual information between the colour of spiral galaxies and their large-scale environment that are statistically significant (99.9% confidence level) throughout the entire length scale probed. Such correlations between the colour and the large-scale environment of spiral galaxies may result from the assembly bias. Thus both the local environment and the assembly bias may play essential roles in forming the red spirals. The spiral galaxies may have different assembly history across all types of environments. We propose a picture where the differences in the assembly history may produce spiral galaxies with different cold gas content. Such a difference would make some spirals more susceptible to quenching. In all environments, the spirals with high cold gas content could delay the quenching and maintain a blue colour, whereas the spirals with low cold gas fractions would be easily quenched and become red.

Star Formation Properties of Sloan Digital Sky Survey BOSS Void Galaxies in the Hyper Suprime-Cam Survey

Abstract We utilize the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Wide Survey to explore the properties of galaxies located in the voids identified from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey up to z ∼ 0.7. The HSC reaches i ∼ 25, allowing us to characterize the void galaxies down to 109.2 solar mass. We find that the revised void galaxy densities, when including faint galaxies in voids defined by bright galaxies, are still underdense compared to the mean density from the entire field. In addition, we classify galaxies into star-forming, quiescent, and green valley populations, and find that void galaxies tend to have slightly higher fractions of star-forming galaxies under the mass and redshift control, although the significance of this result is only moderate (2σ). However, when we focus on the star-forming population, the distribution of the specific star formation rate (sSFR) of void galaxies shows little difference from that of the control galaxies. Similarly, the median sSFR of star-forming void galaxies is also in good agreement with that of the star-forming control galaxies. Moreover, the effective green valley fraction of void galaxies, defined as the number of green valley galaxies over the number of nonquiescent galaxies, is comparable to that of the control ones, supporting the suggestion that void and control galaxies evolve under similar physical processes and quenching frequencies. Our results thus favor a scenario of galaxy assembly bias.

Fiery Cores: Bursty and Smooth Star Formation Distributions across Galaxy Centers in Cosmological Zoom-in Simulations

Abstract We present an analysis of the R ≲ 1.5 kpc core regions of seven simulated Milky Way-mass galaxies, from the FIRE-2 (Feedback in Realistic Environments) cosmological zoom-in simulation suite, for a finely sampled period (Δt = 2.2 Myr) of 22 Myr at z ≈ 0, and compare them with star formation rate (SFR) and gas surface density observations of the Milky Way’s Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). Despite not being tuned to reproduce the detailed structure of the CMZ, we find that four of these galaxies are consistent with CMZ observations at some point during this 22 Myr period. The galaxies presented here are not homogeneous in their central structures, roughly dividing into two morphological classes; (a) several of the galaxies have very asymmetric gas and SFR distributions, with intense (compact) starbursts occurring over a period of roughly 10 Myr, and structures on highly eccentric orbits through the CMZ, whereas (b) others have smoother gas and SFR distributions, with only slowly varying SFRs over the period analyzed. In class (a) centers, the orbital motion of gas and star-forming complexes across small apertures (R ≲ 150 pc, analogously ∣l∣ < 1° in the CMZ observations) contributes as much to tracers of star formation/dense gas appearing in those apertures, as the internal evolution of those structures does. These asymmetric/bursty galactic centers can simultaneously match CMZ gas and SFR observations, demonstrating that time-varying star formation can explain the CMZ’s low star formation efficiency.

Star formation rate density across the cosmic time

We present the star formation rates (SFRs) of galaxies with redshifts of 0 < $z$ < 6 and cosmic star formation rate densities as a function of redshift. The SFRs for the galaxies at infrared emission have been investigated for 1752 sources from the Spitzer 70 μm observations of the Spitzer COSMOS Legacy survey and the various surveys in the literature. Analyzing the SFRs of these objects provides the distribution of SFRs across the redshift range. We have derived the star formation rate densities (SFRDs) based on the present analysis of SFRs and comoving volume calculated from the cosmic parameters we have used. Our results show a slightly steeper slope at lower and intermediate redshift, 0 < $z$ < 2. We have found a steep decline of SFRD from $z=1$ to 0, but measured a peak of SFRD at $z\approx 2.2-2.4$ .

MOSEL and IllustrisTNG: Massive Extended Galaxies at z = 2 Quench Later Than Normal-size Galaxies

Abstract Using the TNG100 (100 Mpc)3 simulation of the IllustrisTNG project, we demonstrate a strong connection between the onset of star formation quenching and the stellar size of galaxies. We do so by tracking the evolutionary history of extended and normal-size galaxies selected at z = 2 with and stellar-half-mass-radii above and within 1σ of the stellar size–stellar mass relation, respectively. We match the stellar mass and star formation rate distributions of the two populations. By z = 1, only 36% of the extended massive galaxies have quenched, in contrast to a quenched fraction of 69% for the normal-size massive galaxies. We find that normal-size massive galaxies build up their central stellar mass without a significant increase in their stellar size between , whereas the stellar size of the extended massive galaxies almost doubles in the same time. In IllustrisTNG, lower black hole masses and weaker kinetic-mode feedback appears to be responsible for the delayed quenching of star formation in the extended massive galaxies. We show that relatively gas-poor mergers may be responsible for the lower central stellar density and weaker supermassive black hole feedback in the extended massive galaxies.

Mock light-cones and theory friendly catalogues for the CANDELS survey

ABSTRACT We present mock catalogues created to support the interpretation of the Cosmic Assembly Near-IR Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS). We extract haloes along past light-cones from the Bolshoi Planck dissipationless N-body simulations and populate these haloes with galaxies using two different independently developed semi-analytic models of galaxy formation and the empirical model universemachine. Our mock catalogues have geometries that encompass the footprints of observations associated with the five CANDELS fields. In order to allow field-to-field variance to be explored, we have created eight realizations of each field. In this paper, we present comparisons with observable global galaxy properties, including counts in observed frame bands, luminosity functions, colour–magnitude distributions and colour–colour distributions. We additionally present comparisons with physical galaxy parameters derived from SED fitting for the CANDELS observations, such as stellar masses and star formation rates. We find relatively good agreement between the model predictions and CANDELS observations for luminosity and stellar mass functions. We find poorer agreement for colours and star formation rate distributions. All of the mock light-cones as well as curated ‘theory friendly’ versions of the observational CANDELS catalogues are made available through a web-based data hub.

Biasing Relation, Environmental Dependencies, and Estimation of the Growth Rate from Star-forming Galaxies

Abstract The connection between galaxy star formation rate (SFR) and dark matter (DM) is of paramount importance for the extraction of cosmological information from next-generation spectroscopic surveys that will target emission line star-forming galaxies. Using publicly available mock galaxy catalogs obtained from various semianalytic models (SAMs), we explore the SFR–DM connection in relation to the speed-from-light method for inferring the growth rate, f, from luminosity/SFR shifts. Emphasis is given to the dependence of the SFR distribution on the environmental density on scales of 10–100 s Mpc. We show that the application of the speed-from-light method to a Euclid-like survey is not biased by environmental effects. In all models, the precision on the measured β = f/b parameter is σ β ≲ 0.17 at z = 1. This translates into errors of σ f ∼ 0.22 and without invoking assumptions on the mass power spectrum. These errors are in the same ballpark as recent analyses of the redshift space distortions in galaxy clustering. In agreement with previous studies, the bias factor, b, is roughly a scale-independent, constant function of the SFR for star-forming galaxies. Its value at z = 1 ranges from 1.2 to 1.5 depending on the SAM recipe. Although in all SAMs, denser environments host galaxies with higher stellar masses, the dependence of the SFR on the environment is more involved. In most models, the SFR probability distribution is skewed to larger values in denser regions. One model exhibits an inverted trend, where high SFR is suppressed in dense environments.

First Light And Reionization Epoch Simulations (FLARES) – I. Environmental dependence of high-redshift galaxy evolution

ABSTRACT We introduce the First Light And Reionisation Epoch Simulations (FLARES), a suite of zoom simulations using the EAGLE model. We resimulate a range of overdensities during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) in order to build composite distribution functions, as well as explore the environmental dependence of galaxy formation and evolution during this critical period of galaxy assembly. The regions are selected from a large $(3.2 \, \mathrm{cGpc})^{3}$ parent volume, based on their overdensity within a sphere of radius 14 h−1 cMpc. We then resimulate with full hydrodynamics, and employ a novel weighting scheme that allows the construction of composite distribution functions that are representative of the full parent volume. This significantly extends the dynamic range compared to smaller volume periodic simulations. We present an analysis of the galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF), the star formation rate distribution function (SFRF), and the star-forming sequence (SFS) predicted by FLARES, and compare to a number of observational and model constraints. We also analyse the environmental dependence over an unprecedented range of overdensity. Both the GSMF and the SFRF exhibit a clear double-Schechter form, up to the highest redshifts (z = 10). We also find no environmental dependence of the SFS normalization. The increased dynamic range probed by FLARES will allow us to make predictions for a number of large area surveys that will probe the EoR in coming years, carried out on new observatories such as Roman and Euclid.

The star formation properties of the observed and simulated AGN Universe: BAT versus EAGLE

ABSTRACT In this paper, we present data from 72 low-redshift, hard X-ray selected active galactic nucleus (AGN) taken from the Swift–BAT 58 month catalogue. We utilize spectral energy distribution fitting to the optical to infrared photometry in order to estimate host galaxy properties. We compare this observational sample to a volume- and flux-matched sample of AGN from the Evolution and Assembly of GaLaxies and their Environments (EAGLE) hydrodynamical simulations in order to verify how accurately the simulations can reproduce observed AGN host galaxy properties. After correcting for the known +0.2 dex offset in the SFRs between EAGLE and previous observations, we find agreement in the star formation rate (SFR) and X-ray luminosity distributions; however, we find that the stellar masses in EAGLE are 0.2–0.4 dex greater than the observational sample, which consequently leads to lower specific star formation rates (sSFRs). We compare these results to our previous study at high redshift, finding agreement in both the observations and simulations, whereby the widths of sSFR distributions are similar (∼0.4–0.6 dex) and the median of the SFR distributions lie below the star-forming main sequence by ∼0.3–0.5 dex across all samples. We also use EAGLE to select a sample of AGN host galaxies at high and low redshift and follow their characteristic evolution from z = 8 to z = 0. We find similar behaviour between these two samples, whereby star formation is quenched when the black hole goes through its phase of most rapid growth. Utilizing EAGLE we find that 23 per cent of AGN selected at z ∼ 0 are also AGN at high redshift, and that their host galaxies are among the most massive objects in the simulation. Overall, we find EAGLE reproduces the observations well, with some minor inconsistencies (∼0.2 dex in stellar masses and ∼0.4 dex in sSFRs).

A binning-free method reveals a continuous relationship between galaxies’ AGN power and offset from main sequence

ABSTRACT Studies investigating the relationship between active galactic nucleus (AGN) power and the star formation rates (SFRs) of their host galaxies often rely on averaging techniques – such as stacking – to incorporate information from non-detections. However, averages, and especially means, can be strongly affected by outliers and can therefore give a misleading indication of the ‘typical’ case. Recently, a number of studies have taken a step further by binning their sample in terms of AGN power (approximated by the 2–10 keV luminosity of the AGN), and investigating how the SFR distribution differs between these bins. These bin thresholds are often weakly motivated, and binning implicitly assumes that sources within the same bin have similar (or even identical) properties. In this paper, we investigate whether the distribution of host SFRs – relative to the locus of the star-forming main sequence (i.e. RMS) – changes continuously as a function of AGN power. We achieve this by using a hierarchical Bayesian model that completely removes the need to bin in AGN power. In doing so, we find strong evidence that the RMS distribution changes with 2–10 keV X-ray luminosity. The results suggest that higher X-ray luminosity AGNs have a tighter physical connection to the star-forming process than lower X-ray luminosity AGNs, at least within the 0.8 &amp;lt; z &amp;lt; 1.2 redshift range considered here.

The ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the HUDF: A Model to Explain Observed 1.1 and 0.85 mm Dust Continuum Number Counts

Abstract We present a new semiempirical model for the dust continuum number counts of galaxies at 1.1 mm and 850 μm. Our approach couples an observationally motivated model for the stellar mass and star formation rate distribution of galaxies with empirical scaling relations to predict the dust continuum flux density of these galaxies. Without a need to tweak the IMF, the model reproduces the currently available observations of the 1.1 mm and 850 μm number counts, including the observed flattening in the 1.1 mm number counts below 0.3 mJy and the number counts in discrete bins of different galaxy properties. Predictions of our work include the following: (1) the galaxies that dominate the number counts at flux densities below 1 mJy (3 mJy) at 1.1 mm (850 μm) have redshifts between z = 1 and z = 2, stellar masses of ∼5 × 1010 M ⊙, and dust masses of ∼108 M ⊙; (2) the flattening in the observed 1.1 mm number counts corresponds to the knee of the 1.1 mm luminosity function. A similar flattening is predicted for the number counts at 850 μm; (3) the model reproduces the redshift distribution of current 1.1 mm detections; and (4) to efficiently detect large numbers of galaxies through their dust continuum, future surveys should scan large areas once reaching a 1.1 mm flux density of 0.1 mJy rather than integrating to fainter fluxes. Our modeling framework also suggests that the amount of information on galaxy physics that can be extracted from the 1.1 mm and 850 μm number counts is almost exhausted.

The GOGREEN survey: the environmental dependence of the star-forming galaxy main sequence at 1.0 &amp;lt; z &amp;lt; 1.5

ABSTRACT We present results on the environmental dependence of the star-forming galaxy main sequence in 11 galaxy cluster fields at 1.0 &amp;lt; z &amp;lt; 1.5 from the Gemini Observations of Galaxies in Rich Early Environments Survey (GOGREEN) survey. We use a homogeneously selected sample of field and cluster galaxies whose membership is derived from dynamical analysis. Using [$\rm{O{\small II}}$]-derived star formation rates (SFRs), we find that cluster galaxies have suppressed SFRs at fixed stellar mass in comparison to their field counterparts by a factor of 1.4 ± 0.1 (∼3.3σ) across the stellar mass range: 9.0 &amp;lt; log (M*/M⊙) &amp;lt; 11.2. We also find that this modest suppression in the cluster galaxy star-forming main sequence is mass and redshift dependent: the difference between cluster and field increases towards lower stellar masses and lower redshift. When comparing the distribution of cluster and field galaxy SFRs to the star-forming main sequence, we find an overall shift towards lower SFRs in the cluster population, and note the absence of a tail of high SFR galaxies as seen in the field. Given this observed suppression in the cluster galaxy star-forming main sequence, we explore the implications for several scenarios such as formation time differences between cluster and field galaxies, and environmentally induced star formation quenching and associated time-scales.

Spatially Resolved Properties of Galaxies from CANDELS+MUSE: Radial Extinction Profile and Insights on Quenching

Abstract Studying the internal processes of individual galaxies at kilo-parsec scales is crucial in enhancing our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution processes. In this work, we investigate the distribution of star formation rate (SFR), specific SFR (sSFR), and dust attenuation across individual galaxies for a sample of 32 galaxies selected from the MUSE-Wide Survey at 0.1 &lt; z &lt; 0.42 with a dynamic range in stellar masses between 107.7 and 1010.3 M ⊙. We take advantage of the high spatial resolution of the MUSE integral field spectrograph and measure reliable spatially resolved Hα and Hβ emission-line maps for individual galaxies. We also derive resolved stellar mass, SFR and dust maps using pixel-by-pixel spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting on high-resolution multiband Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Advanced Camera for Surveys and HST/Wide Field Camera 3 data from the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey survey. By combining these, we analyze the radial profile of various physical parameters across these galaxies. We observe a radial dependence in both stellar and nebular color excess profiles peaking at the inner regions of galaxies. We also find the color excess profiles to most strongly correlate with the integrated sSFRs of galaxies. The median sSFRHα radial profiles of galaxies in our sample show a 0.8 dex increase from the central regions outward. This increase compared with the almost flat median radial profile of sSFRSED, which traces longer timescales of star formation, is in favor of the inside-out quenching of star formation. We bring further evidence for this quenching scenario from the locus of different subregions of galaxies on the SFR–M * and sSFR–M * relations.
